Psalms 87-88

Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song.

87:1 On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
the Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
Glorious things of you are spoken,
O city of God. Selah

Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;
behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush—
“This one was born there,” they say.
And of Zion it shall be said,
“This one and that one were born in her”;
for the Most High himself will establish her.
The Lord records as he registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah

Singers and dancers alike say,
“All my springs are in you.”

I Cry Out Day and Night Before You

A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

88:1 O Lord, God of my salvation;
I cry out day and night before you.
Let my prayer come before you;
incline your ear to my cry!

For my soul is full of troubles,
and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
I am a man who has no strength,
like one set loose among the dead,
like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom you remember no more,
for they are cut off from your hand.
You have put me in the depths of the pit,
in the regions dark and deep.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah

You have caused my companions to shun me;
you have made me a horror to them.
I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O Lord;
I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you work wonders for the dead?
Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Are your wonders known in the darkness,
or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13 But I, O Lord, cry to you;
in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 O Lord, why do you cast my soul away?
Why do you hide your face from me?
15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
your dreadful assaults destroy me.
17 They surround me like a flood all day long;
they close in on me together.
18 You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;
my companions have become darkness. (ESV)

  1. Chelseaaa says:

    16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.

    Thank you Lord for writing my name in your book so I can avoid your wrath and praise your name for the rest of my time on this Earth.

  2. Cameron says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    here the psalmist cries out to God for help, in the morning. it is very important that we start our day off with praying to God and and getting in the Word. if we start our day with Scripture and talking to God, it will be on our minds and we can meditate on the Bible and fight the sin in our lives easier. we also need to be praying for revival on our school campuses everyday, and it is wise to do so before school, whether it be with friends before class starts, or by ourselves when we wake up. in particular this is something that i need to work on, and i need to be talking to God in the morning, so that i am dwelling on Him and His glory and not myself.

  3. Beth Lauder says:

    15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair.

    The psalmist is crying out to God when death is looming and suffering abounds. What stood out to me is the psalmist is a very godly man, yet he claims to have suffered for long periods of time in his life. There is so often a misunderstanding that if we are children of God that we will be protected from suffering, pain, and sickness on this earth. This psalmist, Jesus, Job, Daniel, Joseph, the disciples and so many other heroes of the Bible prove that this is not true. As a matter of fact, Jesus tells us that suffering, trials and tribulations are a certainty of this life if we are His. (John 16:33) My prayer today is that I would have the response of this psalmist to my trials; crying out to the Lord in prayer and total dependance on Him. Thank You, Lord, that Your ears are attentive to my prayers and that You promise to be close to the broken hearted and save those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)

  4. Dave Hosford praying for revival before He comes says:

    AMEN Chelseaaa!

    Lord, please send me today to share Your life-giving Word with someone today. Open my eyes to a neighbor or relative who You want me to speak with. Use me and please come soon!

  5. Steffen Eriksen says:

    11 Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction ?

    12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?

    The psalmist is feeling cut off and set apart from God. He wants to be close to God yet he feels a great distance between them. He asks if God’s love is declared in the grave and if His faithfulness is shown in destruction. He asks if all the wondrous works He has done are known in the darkness, and if His righteous deeds are known in the land of oblivion. The answer to all is yes! He declared love in the grave by sending His perfect Son to the grave, to die on a cross, that salvation could come to those filthy, rotten sinners who could never save themselves. And God’s faithfulness is evident in destruction. When He says He will wipe out a nation or protect His people, He will follow through with His word. He will remain faithful as He does wipe out a nation, or allow other forms of destruction to fall upon people so that His people would be protected. The wonders of God are known everywhere! Like the message was on evolution, all one has to do is look up to see the marvelous creation of the LORD. And His righteous deeds are known in the land of oblivion. Regardless of whether or not people can see the right in what He is doing, God still knows what He is doing. I may not always be able to see what God is doing, but I need to always trust that He will remain faithful to what He says, and that He will never let anything happen to me that is outside of His will. God’s qualities are clearly demonstrated in everything, so I need to take time to look up and look around and see what God has done, and then praise Him!

  6. Brooke Miller says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    The Lord is always there and I know that I can always draw near to him! Whatever trial I may face, I know I can always cry out for help and trust in the Lord! As Cameron mentioned, it is so important to talk to God and start off mornings in prayer! I always do my quiet times and pray before school, and its really helpful! I am excited to talk to people and explain the gospel and truth to them! This year is going to be awesome and I will make Jesus Christ known on my campus!

  7. Riley Hancock says:

    We are called to do you will and to get into heaven to be with you forever. Help me to be more willing to talk to people about God more often.

  8. Alison Reeves says:

    Psalm 88 is so different from yesterday’s chapters…

    7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. Selah
    8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;
    9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.

    Wow, this Psalmist is in a really bad place. His life seems completely out of control, he’s so depressed. The Christian life isn’t always rainbows and sunshine… a lot of the time its heartache and suffering. This reminds me of some verses in 1 Peter- that if you suffer for doing what’s right, you’re blessed (3:14), and that you shouldn’t be surprised when painful trials come, but rejoice that you are part of the sufferings of Christ (4:12-13), and finally that you should not be ashamed in the face of suffering but instead praise God for your salvation (4:16)! Life on earth is HARD, that’s for sure. We’re going to go through our share of things that seem really out of control. God didn’t promise it would be easy. But He DID promise it will be worth it, and I’m trusting in that.

  9. emily :) says:

    15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair.

    16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.

    17 All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me.

    18 You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.

    These verses are really intense!! The psalmist is in agony over how his life has been… And, I’m sure most people who live in this corrupt world have lost close friends or loved ones and felt alone with “darkness as their closest friend.” God can also send His wrath on this earth and it may affect people. But, none of these things happen without it being part of God’s perfect will. He will never let something happen that isn’t planned AND He will “work all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

  10. Mike says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    The verses following this one show just how much the psalmist has been through. Facing trial after trial for his entire life, he is at the point where he feels he has been completely destroyed, and is no better off than a dead man. And God has not come to rescue him; instead, He puts him through more trials. But he does not stop calling out to God for help. He does not get angry and turn away from HIm. There will be times in our lives as well when we are put through trials and start to lose hope. We may never even understand why certain things happen to us (just as God never revealed to Job why He had to suffer). But that doesn’t mean that God does not love us. And instead of expecting an easy way out of difficult situations, I need to view suffering as a part of God’s plan, strengthening me and producing perseverance (James 1:3).

  11. Jenae nae :) says:

    This is such a sad chapter but even when this guy is in the worst of pain, he is still calling out to God and asking him for help. His first response was to trust in God. I need to make sure that that is always my first response in times of trouble. The bible needs to be my getaway.

  12. Hannah says:

    That was a great comment Beth! I was thinking about the same things while reading this passage….But I was getting confused by the fact that this psalmist is a Godly man and upright before the Lord yet he describes everything as such a terror….Beth totally explained why this was so! Thanks Beth[:

    It’s so true though….what the psalmist does do is respond correctly to his trials, which is going to the Lord in prayer, crying out, and dwelling on the Lord. He puts all of his dependence on the Lord, which is so awesome and I need to do this more! There is this quote by Jerry Bridges that I always go to when I feel that I’m trying to work something out, or get through a trial on my own rather than relying on God to help me….. “Christianity is not a “do-it-yourself” thing…”

    And I just love that quote because it is so true! It’s not at all! But we must go to God with everything! That’s why I loved verse 2, “May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.” God totally hears us, he can choose not to but He does….He humbles himself before us and takes the time to listen… It’s so awesome and supppppper encouraging to know that we have a God that we can fully depend on, that we can go to whenever we are in need and it’s ultimately because He loves us!

  13. Angela says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    Any time we are in a tough spot we need to ask God for help we should always go to him when we are in trouble, to know that he is always there. As in the morning it is always important to start your day off with prayer to the Lord and thank him for all that he has done :)

  14. Austin Payne 2010 says:

    7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. Selah
    Conviction of Sin should make us feel like this. It is heavy on our shoulders and we can feel God’s Wrath. Thank You Lord for saving me so I don’t have to suffer all of your Wrath/

  15. Alex Mishreki says:

    Intense chapter!

    This verse stood out to me the most:

    8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;

    I have learned that when the Lord needs to get our attention, He takes away things that are dear to us. If we’ve been going down the wrong path, and not setting Him first, there’s consequences for that. As this Psalmist is saying in this verse, the Lord has taken away from him his closest friends. And he feels confined and alone. Ultamitely, Christ knows whats best for each one of us. And if it means taking away our closest friends to get our attention, He’ll do it. Lord, give me a teachable and guidable heart that I may be ready for what You put (or take away) from my life.

  16. Maddie Nadeau :) says:

    16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.

    The Lord enflicts His wrath on those who turn away from Him and reject His name. I pray that i will never fall from you Lord but stay loyal to your path all of my life and that I praise your everyday that you put MY name, a lowly sinner, in your eternally holy book of life. Selah

  17. JWade says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    as humans we need help from God, we cant do anything without Him. and when we cry out to Him we need to litterally cry out to Him like the psalmist, not just mention it unthougtfully but cry for it passionatly. i need to do this much more than i do.

    MARANTAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Never Take David Personal says:

    10 Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? Selah

    11 Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction ?

    12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?

    So, this is a theme that we have seen throughout the psalms….”God if you let me die, I won’t be able to praise you on this earth…” The only way we can really make this claim to God is if we are worshiping him on this earth…now I am not saying that in heaven we will be unable to praise God, on the contrary, we will do that 24/7… but there are many things that death will not allow us to do….so we need to take advantage of our time here on earth….most of it has to do with worshiping God by that way that we live and being lights unto non-christians…. I pray that I won’t waste my life, but that I will be an example for others…and that I will evangelise both with actions and words….

  19. Spencer Camp says:

    4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like a man without strength.

    Psalm 88 reminds me of how I was before I became a Christian, destined for the grave and an object of God’s wrath. I was powerless over death, but now I am sure, the power of God, the gospel, has saved me. But “as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ” (Philippians 3:18).

    Now I want to warn my friends who are walking the path to destruction that a salvation through Christ is available. That through repentance and faith in the death and resurrection of Christ they can be saved from the fires of hell.

    Let’s be bold for Christ! Stand firm!

  20. Shelby says:

    3 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    I like this verse because it reminds me that I need to always be praying first thing. When I have been in Gods word and prayed to him the day will go better. I love that the Lord is there for me whenever. I can pray to the Lord where ever and when ever and he will be there. The Lord is there for me more than even my friends or family and that it truly amazing!

  21. PaYtOn :D says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    God hears and loves. He is an amazing God who is just and shows compassion. He listens and answers. The answer to my prayers aren’t always what I want them to be, but God has a plan and His plan will prevail for it will all work out in the end to His glory! Praise the LORD for He is good! :]

    ***PRAISE HIM!!!***

  22. Murphy Danahy says:

    6 The LORD will write in the register of the peoples: “This one was born in Zion.” Selah
    7 As they make music they will sing, “All my fountains are in you.”

    Wow David (Or whoever wrote this) really goes from happy to sad quickly doesn’t he? One moment he is praising GOD, and the next he is saying how miserable he is. But I guess that’s life, and yet another reason why we should have all our hope in GOD.

  23. Kelsey says:

    16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.

    God is extremely powerful. And he is all just and all knowing. He will not tolerate sin> This verse really reminds me of how serious God is about disobedience, we need to obey him. We need to fear him. And we have a good basis to fear him too, we do not want God’s wrath poured out on us, at least I dont. That alone helps keep me from sinning and reminds me of how God reacts. He is a jealous God, and by sinning I do not show him the respect he deserves. I need to keep fearing the Lord, as it helps me stay away from sn and remain firm when tempted. And when I am tempted, I need to think of this verse to be reminded that I do not want God’s wrath upon me.

  24. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    Praise God that He saved me. I have learned through the psalms that I must be crying out day and night to my God. This is something I need to do because with out God I cant do anything. So I am going to cry out to God more.

  25. hunter 2010 says:

    Great comments Beth and Jenae!

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    14 Why, O LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me?

    15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair.

    16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.

    Even in his moments of despair and terror this psalmist does not loose faith. Instead of turing to sin to make him feel better the psalmist cries out to God and begs for help. When I feel this way in life I want to do the same thing, I wan’t to act and think Biblicaly in times when I feel terrified, hopeless, and overwhelmed. I will let the Holy Spirit control my mind (Rom. 8:6) and have faith in promises like Rom. 8:28 and Rom. 8:35-39. Praise God for His everlasting love and compassion for the saints!

  26. austin says:

    This is such a sad chapter. It seems as if half of psalms is about getting through sad times.
    7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves
    This makes me think that possibley the Psalmist did something wrong and is crying out to God for forgiveness.

  27. jacksondahl says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    The psalmist is showing amazing trust in God here. Even when he feels lost and that God has abandoned him, he STILL cries out for help and prays to the Lord trusting that he will provide. I need to show this kind of trust for God in my life.

    MARANATHA!!!!!

  28. ۞۞Ŧŗɇɤϕŗ ђɵśᵮɵŗȡ ۞۞ says:

    9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.

    i liked this verse because the psalmist talkes about how he prays and talks to God everyday, not just whenever he feels like it. i need to pray more often so i can talk to God more

  29. Eric Walker says:

    9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.

    Many times in my life, my eyes have become full of grief, but we have to stand firm in the Lord. Every day, it is vital that we are on our knees praying to the Lord our God and asking that he would deliver us from our grief. Whenever we are in a trial and things seem to continue to go downhill and we feel the need to worry and take care of it, God is ready to help us, but we have to ask him. When we are in times of trouble, take refuge in the Lord your God and he will help you. God has truly saved me from so many trials and I want to praise him and give him all the glory!!!!!!!!

  30. Jasmine Douglas says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.
    2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.
    3 For my soul is full of trouble…

    These 3 verses stood out to me today. They made me wonder how often I come to the feet of Jesus with my troubles. So often we try to carry our own load only to find that we will end up disappointed because we are not equipped to make it on our own with our own strength. Don’t be afraid to pour out your heart to the Lord. He knows you inside and out and wants us to communicate with him. I want to lean on him for everything in life, good and bad, and ask for wisdom and guidance. I am confident that he will take care of his children =)

  31. katie baxter says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    It is so important to remember to come to God when we are going through hard times. Its sometimes easier to think that we can handle it ourselves, and that we have everything under control. But i know i definitely do not know more than God does, and he has a much better idea of how things will work out than i do. I need to remember this and bring my troubles to God first!

  32. Tristan says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.

    3 For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave.

    Beth, I love what you wrote. You’re right, Christians will suffer in our earthly life, but hopefully the difference will be that, as Christians, we will cry out to the Lord for guidance and comfort. We should be focused in prayer especially in times of deep struggles instead of seeking/indulging in sinful behavior for a fast fix.

  33. Stacy Perkins says:

    8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;

    Alex, you nailed the hammer right on the head for me! The past couple of years have been filled with a series of God removing every single person, thing, or circumstance that I had allowed to come between God and me. He wants ALL of us, not just PARTS of us. His faithful pursuit of us is mind-blowing. He IS, truly, mighty to save.

  34. Matt Crichton ((2010)) says:

    9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.

    The author of this psalm was going through a bad time. Yet every day he prayed to the Lord and was able to face the day. That is why prayer is so important. It strenghtens our relationship with God. Praise Him every day!

  35. Melissa Cox says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.

    The psalmist is in a lot of pain in this psalm. Even though he sounds so desperate and frustrated that the Lord hasn’t yet answered his prayer–he continues to pray! He continues to bring his request before the Lord. I want to be like this psalmist–no matter how frustrated I get or how “bad” I may think God’s timing is for answering a prayer…I want to faithfully bring my request before the Lord and always trust in Him.

  36. Boyd Jorden says:

    9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.

    I love the portrait of total reliance here. Even though the psalmist is experiencing intense grief, he still humbly submits to God, relying on His aid and comfort. The ‘every day’ shows the psalmist’s patience and perseverence. For me, this psalm underscored Pastor Mike’s recent message about suffering; his teaching of what Hebrews says on the subject was so encouraging. As Christians, we can be glad that our trials can make us more like Christ. I have been praying this week that God will help me rely on Him during my struggles and help me gain perseverence and wisdom from my suffering so that I might be more useful to others when they face trials. I am praying that my suffering will make me a stronger instrument for Christ and the work of His kingdom.

  37. Wesley Wong says:

    this psalmist is clearly having a bad day, or months, like almost all of us have.t a couple close family members and friends have died in this guys life. he is grieving. looks how he starts off this psalms with. he says that God saves him, and day and night he cries out before him. now these cries aren’t cries of praise. he is questioning God. in verses 10-12, he ask questions to God, they are: Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction? Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion? He is saddened by the loss of close friends, and is questioning God.

    But in Proverbs 3:5
    It says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

    Sometimes its hard to trust God, its hard to know they He knows what is best. This guy right here is going through experiences where he has to know that God has taken his friends to a better place, and one day he will join them.

    But then the psalmist says something very inspiring in verse 13: But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    This reminds me that we should pray always without ceasing. It says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17: pray continually. No matter what circumstance, we can always pray to God, anywhere and anytime(:

    This psalms also reminds me of James 1:2-4: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
    This dude is going through a period of hard times, but God did it for a reason, and I am not sure what reason it was for, only God knows that. But i am guessing that this trial will develop this dude more Godly character and perseverance.

    To recap:
    -Trust in God, and because God know best
    -Pray continually, in times of good and bad
    -Rejoice in times of trials and temptations, so you come out complete and mature, not lacking anything

    (:

  38. Fëanor says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    I find it interesting that the psalmist chose to put these two ideas together. First, God saves us, and second, we cry out to him. In effect, I think that I should see these as equivalent and interrelated things. If we cry out to God, he will save us. I need to pray more often. In fact, I should pray day and night. I’m glad that God is willing to save us.

  39. Mady says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    I really like this verse. It is encouraging for me because I need to cry out to God in prayer more. I need to cry out to him because he saves me!!! Our God is so powerful that he can save us from death and hell he deserves my praise, and I need to talk to him DAY and NIGHT! :)

  40. Ben Blakey says:

    3 Glorious things are said of you, O city of God:

    The Psalmists write a lot about the City of God. In those days, Jerusalem with the temple were associated with the glory and presence of God.

    This makes me look forward to the New Jerusalem, when we will again be worshiping in the city of God!

    MARANATHA!

  41. kelly causky says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    In times of hardship and struggle we get discouraged because we do not rely on God through prayer. That has happened to me recently. i have been anxious about the future (next year) and have been more worried than I should because I did not rely enough on prayer. I realize now how stupid that was because the Sovereign God has everything under his control. Praying the the Creator makes you feel so much better!

  42. Pastor Bobby says:

    Ahhh….it’s great to sit down and read the comments here at the end of a long day!

    Great meeting with the small group leaders of True North today…exciting for small groups to start this week!

    Also, so good to see so many of you at True North…hope we can recapture some of the spirit of Revival and resolve to live with no compromise!

    Psalm 88 is rough…it even ends rough…this guy is clearly having a hard time…even losing friends and we all know how hard that can be. Yet, notice what he does in his distress…he cries out to the Lord!

    I really liked what Cameron said about this, that we should begin our days in prayer. As I am calling it a night, I am going to begin tomorrow morning in prayer to the Lord!

    Looking forward to another great day of True North and ready to preach it!

  43. Christopher Eriksen says:

    10 Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? Selah

    Psalm 88 is rough like Bobby said, but it’s cool to see how much the psalmist desires to be with God. Not having God’s presence feels like death for him, and the only reason that in a sense he doesn’t want to die is because dead people can’t be out praising and proclaiming God to others. How much do I delight in God’s presence, and how much am I committed to bringing Him glory? Lord, please help me to delight in your presence so much that I feel dead if I’m not with you and please help me to truly be devoted to brining you glory, realizing that that is the only reason I am alive and was created for in the first place. Jesus Christ is better than anything else!

  44. Katie Slusher says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you

    As trouble begins to fill our lives as it did in the the Psalmist, a common temptation might be to either forget about the mercies of God or to become embittered towards God. The Psalmist here recognizes that God is the source of salvation before he cries out to the Lord for continued mercy. I must never forget that the goodness and forgiveness of God is still true despite whatever circumstances I am experiencing. I must continue to know and love God for who he is and what he has done.

  45. Christa Blakey says:

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.
    2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.

    When surrounded with difficulty I am tempted to become discouraged, but I am really inspired by how the Psalmist cries out to the Lord in that. I don’t want to just run to other people or try to bear troubles on my own. What a privilege to cry to the Lord in prayer and how amazing that he turns his ear and hears my cries!

  46. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 88

    1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.

    I like how this psalm starts out with a positive tone regardless of the terrible circumstances that afflict this man. Our fear and respect for God should lead us to meet Him every morning and every evening. This man starts his prayer by giving God the glory for his salvation. Like this psalm our prayers should start by giving God the glory and honor that He deserves.

    How important it is to start our day in prayer? How can we put our Day with God into proper perspective if we fail to meet Him every morning in prayer?

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    As follower of Christ we need to cry out in prayer that God will lead us thru each day and that we will follow in His footsteps wherever they might lead.

  47. P.J. says:

    Great comments Cameron and Mike!

    The psalmist is going through major trials, and instead of losing hope and turning to sin, he turns to God in prayer and pleas to him for relief. Each day I need to start with prayer, just as the psalmist did. I’ve been lazy lately and saying I’ll do this and that, but when it comes down to it I do other things instead. I need to be proactive in both my reading and my praying, and I need to stop talking about doing it, and just start doing it. God use me to stand out of the world and boldly live for you this week without compromising!

  48. Rebekah Foreman says:

    13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

    This verse when I read it last night was supper comforting. I was home alone last night until about 10:30 and I was really frightened when I knew God was with me everything started to settle down and I bvecome not frightened. God was with me
