Psalms 79-80

How Long, O Lord?

A Psalm of Asaph.

79:1 O God, the nations have come into your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple;
they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.
They have given the bodies of your servants
to the birds of the heavens for food,
the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them.
We have become a taunt to our neighbors,
mocked and derided by those around us.

How long, O Lord? Will you be angry forever?
Will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out your anger on the nations
that do not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that do not call upon your name!
For they have devoured Jacob
and laid waste his habitation.

Do not remember against us our former iniquities;
let your compassion come speedily to meet us,
for we are brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us, and atone for our sins,
for your name’s sake!
10 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants
be known among the nations before our eyes!

11 Let the groans of the prisoners come before you;
according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die!
12 Return sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors
the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!
13 But we your people, the sheep of your pasture,
will give thanks to you forever;
from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

Restore Us, O God

To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Testimony. Of Asaph, a Psalm.

80:1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock!
You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh,
stir up your might
and come to save us!

Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!

O Lord God of hosts,
how long will you be angry with your people’s prayers?
You have fed them with the bread of tears
and given them tears to drink in full measure.
You make us an object of contention for our neighbors,
and our enemies laugh among themselves.

Restore us, O God of hosts;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!

You brought a vine out of Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
You cleared the ground for it;
it took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 It sent out its branches to the sea
and its shoots to the River.
12 Why then have you broken down its walls,
so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
13 The boar from the forest ravages it,
and all that move in the field feed on it.

14 Turn again, O God of hosts!
Look down from heaven, and see;
have regard for this vine,
15 the stock that your right hand planted,
and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.
16 They have burned it with fire; they have cut it down;
may they perish at the rebuke of your face!
17 But let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
18 Then we shall not turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call upon your name!

19 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts!
Let your face shine, that we may be saved! (ESV)

    Psalm 79:5 How long, O LORD ? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?

    Our God is a jealous God and he deserves to be number one in our lives! Not only number one, but he needs to be our life! As a Christian, I have noticed that my life needs be different from others and to be more Christ-like because I strive to seek out the Lord’s will for my life. I have grown so much the last couple of months, and I praise God for it! But it is not going to stop here. I am going to serve and obey the Lord in everything and my prayer will be to grow more than ever this year and to go full out, even on the areas where I struggle in! God is amazing and so holy, but he is also a jealous God who deserves all my focus on him with no distractions! Praying for a revival al Aliso this year!

  2. Steffen Eriksen says:

    11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die.

    The psalmist Asaph is seeking deliverance from the LORD. Here he asks that the cries of the prisoners will be heard by Him, and that He will save them, though they are sentenced to death, by His amazing strength. And this is like every single person. There is not one who is not sinful and doesn’t deserve to die for their sins. And it is not by doing anything that one can save himself, for that is impossible. Salvation only comes through God, sending down His Son to die for us and rise again. By the strength of His arm He has preserved some of those who are condemned to die. And to the elect, those He has chosen to save, they need to be thankful for their salvation. I need to praise God daily for saving me from my sins. I need to always be filled with an attitude of joy and gratitude, for though I deserve nothing, I have been given everything, that is salvation from my sins and the penalty I deserve, and a guaranteed eternity in Heaven!

  3. Dave Hosford praying for revival before He comes says:

    Ps 79:2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.

    Pastor Mike spoke on Ro 5:3-4 regarding the troubles of the Christian life this weekend. We’ll have people hating us, persecuting us and God’s discipline on us. But through it all we should be glad that:

    1. Having trouble is the normal situation in the Christian life,
    2. Going through troubles make us more Christ-like, especially God’s discipline,
    3. Having torubles can NEVER diminish God’s love for us.

    1 Cor 16:13-14 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.

    1 Cor 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord—a curse be on him. Come, O Lord!

    Be completely committed to the Lord in seeking Him, making disciples and leading others. Because the Lord will spit out those that are luke warm and the blessing of the cross will be useless if we aren’t “all in.” Please, Lord, come soon!

  4. Trembling from fear of the almighty God, B says:

    wooooooooooow…..now this was an intense Psalm!!!! Asaph is crying out to the Lord when the enemy has risen against him and God’s people…their blood is all over the floor….ewwwwwww I can’t even imagine that!!! And it’s all of Asaph’s probably good friends too…..I just think of all my good friends in Christ and them dying…now I would be devastated!!!!!!!! But Asaph cries out to the Lord for help and continues to in the next Psalm. He knows that God is his deliverer and that He provides him strength even when his friends are dying around him or in jail. Lord let me go to you for strength as I evangelize today for school and help me not forget all that you’ve done for me and how you’ll always protect me. :)

  5. Max says:

    11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die.

    Steffen had a really good point when he talked about this verse. Everyone is condemned to die. But only by the power of the Lord can we be saved from eternal death in hell. So just like Asaph called out to God to save Him, So should I. Because just like the people described in this verse, i was condemned to die too. But the Lord preserves me and all the other Christians!

  6. Cameron says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    the psalmist is crying out to God to help israel, and to deliver him from his enemies. what stood out to me in this psalm was how asaph cried out to God for His Name’s sake, for the glory of God’s Name. yes, asaph wanted deliverence, but even more he wanted God’s Name to be high and exalted. this reminded me of when Jesus taught on prayer in John 14:13-14. He said that He will grant us anything if we pray for His glory and according to His will. one thing that we should always be crying out to God for is revival at our campuses, for the glory of His Name according to His will. lets be on our knees begging God!

  7. ۞۞Ŧŗɇɤϕŗ ђɵśᵮɵŗȡ ۞۞ says:

    i like how in psalm 80 the writer clearly wants God to restore him and he gets more and more desprate and cries to God, Restore us O GOD, then restore us O GOD ALMIGHTY, then restore us O LORD GOD ALMIGHTY he really wants to be restored and he cries to the Lord

  8. Austin 2010 says:

    I do have to say that I feel like these chapters are starting to feel like they are repeating each other. I have not figured it out yet but I feel like there is some deeper meaning behind this repetiveness. Does anyone know why?

    Goodmorning . . .

    I read . . .

    Psalm 79 & 80 . . .

    “9. Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.”

    “19. Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.”

    Asaph is completely crying out to His God Almighty in these two verses. They are cry of helps to God for Him to deliver and forgive Asaph’s sins. Asaph prays that God will restore them and have God show His face apon them. He doesn’t want to suffer any longer. Asaph realizes that God is powerful and that He can rescue Him out of Jerusalem. Also, in chapter 80, Asaph lists all the wonderous things that God has committed and is saying to Him that because of those, surley God could rescued Asaph.

  10. Beth Lauder says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    In this psalm the psalmist is praying for God’s forgiveness and asking for Him to deliver Israel and destroy the nations who have persecuted them. What stood out to me was the penitent attitude of the psalmist. He understands that he and his forefathers have committed sins against God. He asks for forgiveness and is repentant before he asks God for help. This is so important for me to do in my own life. I must be sure that I come before God and confess my sins to Him before I ask for Him to help me or deliver me from the consequences of my sins. The psalmist realizes that God will deliver him not because he deserves it, but for the glory of His name’s sake. It is crucial that I have a high view of God and understand that any help He gives me is to bring His name glory and not because I deserve it.

  11. Melissa Cox says:

    7 Restore us, O God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

    I’m so thankful that God’s face did shine on us when he sent Jesus to live a perfect life and die on the cross for our sins. Because of God’s grade, we can be saved and I have been saved. Praise the Lord!

  12. Elise says:

    17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself.
    18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.

    I love how the psalmist turns from telling God to punish the others who do not glorify God and His kingdom (which He will) to being repentant and pleading with God to save him from his own sins through mercy. Then, at the end of Psalm 80, he asks God to be glorified through ‘the son of man’ (a.k.a. Jesus). The psalmist asks God to revive His people, to save them so that we can turn to Him. If we are revived by Christ, then God will get even more glory, which he deserves!

  13. Ben Blakey says:

    8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

    Even as Asaph prays for God to come and judge the sinful people around him, he asks God for mercy and admits his own desperate need. Even though he was talking about the sins of others, he was aware of his own sin and his need for forgiveness.

    The same needs to be true of me. In the midst of a sinful world that faces judgment and needs the gospel, I always need to remember my own sin and my own need for forgiveness!

    MARANATHA!

  14. PaYtOn :D says:

    Ps 79:6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;
    Ps 79:13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

    Wow! If God poured His wrath on all the nations who don’t believe in Him, like Sodom and Gomorrah, there wouldn’t be much left. I was looking around for “statistics” on what the percentage for Christianity is and I came upon this website: http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html
    The even funnier thing is that Christianity includes:
    “African Independent Churches (AICs), the Aglipayan Church, Amish, Anglicans, Armenian Apostolic, Assemblies of God; Baptists, Calvary Chapel, Catholics, Christadelphians, Christian Science, the Community of Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“Mormons”), Coptic Christians, Eastern Orthodox churches, Ethiopian Orthodox, Evangelicals, Iglesia ni Cristo, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Local Church, Lutherans, Methodists, Monophysites, Nestorians, the New Apostolic Church, Pentecostals, Plymouth Brethren, Presbyterians, the Salvation Army, Seventh-Day Adventists, Shakers, Stone-Campbell churches (Disciples of Christ; Churches of Christ; the “Christian Church and Churches of Christ”; the International Church of Christ); Uniate churches, United Church of Christ/Congregationalists, the Unity Church, Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Vineyard churches and others. These groups exhibit varying degrees of similarity, cooporation, communion, etc. with other groups.”
    WOW those are a lot of “Christians” but what are they teaching? Are the teaching the Bible? Are they truelly followers of Christ? On the website listed above it said that 33% of the world are “Christians.” And if that 33% is what is above, then our world is going to be pretty similar to Sodom and Gomorrah. I (and not just me, but all those Christ followers) need to EVEANGELIZE and GET THE TRUTH OUT THERE! In Matthew 28:18-20 it talks about going out and makeing disciples of all nations! SO LETS GET THE WORD OUT THERE SO THAT PEOPLE KNOW THAT JESUS CHRIST IS KING!!! That way future generations will be raised knowing the truth! :]

    ***LETS GO EVANGELIZE!!!***

  15. T moore says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Ben made a great point on this. Asaph is praying that God will judge the sinful for what they have done but Asaph prays for mercy on him. He remembers that, even in times where he seeks God’s judgement, he still remembers his own sin and asks for forgiveness. I should have this same mindset. Even though we live in this sinful world, I need to remember to keep my focus on God!

  16. Murphy Danahy says:

    11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die.

    Wow. Long posts. I don’t think I can compete with that kind of posting skill. Whatever. This verse just reminded me of the thousands of Christians in chains for our LORD and savior Jesus Christ. We should at the very least be praying for them daily.

  17. Sarah G.! says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    I’m lovin’ this verse!! It just stood out to me because of the way he immediately wanted God to have all the glory!! He was asking for deliverance in a humble manner; definitely not selfish by the way he pleads with God to forgive for His name’s sake. That is something I often do not think about when asking God to forgive me of my sins. To God be the glory!! :D

  18. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like verse 10,”Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.”

    I like this verse because it talks about me needing to do GOD’s work. Basically CHRISTians aren’t known for sharing GOD’s word and we are usually asked if we are mormon I think it is pitiful that even though we serve the one true GOD we aren’t known for teaching HIS word. This makes me want to step up my teaching.

  19. Riley Hancock says:

    God died for us on the cross so we do not surer Gods wrath.

  20. Luke Melrose!!!!!! 2010 says:

    12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord.

    Wow. I dont know if this verse stood out to anyone else, but this is a hardcore deep request! Talk about getting angry when someone else defies God! I think this is an appropriate response, as a Christian. It should make us angry how God isnt getting the respect He deserves.

  21. Kyle J 2010, is in awe at the power of God's Word says:

    Started reading “The Pilgrim’s Progress” and I love it, definitley recommend reading it like Pastor B did a month ago or two. It’s my favorite book that is not the Bible!

    14 Return to us, O God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine,

    Both of these Psalms, Asaph and the rest of the Israelites are crying out to God to save them from their enemies. When you look through the Bible, when God is not with the Israelites, the Israelites are having struggling times as a nation. In this Psalm, you can assume that God is not with the Israelites because Asaph in his Psalm is crying out to God to return to Israelites.

    Can hardly wait til True North United! 2 days!

  22. Jasmine Wonton says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    I agree with Sarah :) This verse really stood out to me too. It’s so awesome that God forgives and delivers me from my sins. That’s so amazing. I want to glorify God in everything that I do. Nothing that I can do is ever going to “pay back” or “outgive” God. That’s what is so great about having a relationship with Him and not being bound by rules and religion like what some people think Christianity is about. He gave His everything for me but the very least I can do is glorify and fear Him with all I have. And to keep looking for ways to serve and evangelize Him for His glory!

  23. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

    8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

    I agree with Bethany on how this Psalm is intense! I think that this verse pretty much summarizes how followers of God need to respond to His wrath and awesomeness! Right now I have been reading James (which is an amazing book) and I have been learning to further humble myself before God, and be a good example to others. When I read this verse I thought to myself “wow this is an attitude toward God I need to have!” I need to continue to fear God, and be a living sacrifice to Him daily!

  24. Shelby says:

    5 How long, O LORD ? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?

    I like what Brooke said about this. Our God is a jealous God. He deserves our lives and our all. I want to stop living selfishly and start living my life all for Christ. The lord deserves all of my praise and attention.

  25. Rebekah Foreman says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Forgive us oh Lord of are sin we commit. No one can stop sinning ever Lord. But, please help us acknowldge it and turn from it of Lord. Let our sin belittle and shall we glorify your name.

  26. Alyssa K says:

    13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

    Throughout history we have seen those who stray and those who follow God. We need to be the group in our generation that continually praises his name and is not afraid of those among our generation that oppose us. If we are truly Christ’s sheep, we should utter praise to our shepherd, proclaiming his name among all the earth. This past evangelism night I learned how liberating it feels to stand up for Christ to people you know who do not believe in him. Therefore, as a sheep who follows its master, I need to continue to listen and learn to what God tells me.

  27. Adam Duarte [2010] says:

    2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.

    3 They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead.

    I was reading these verses this morning and thought about how grotesque the imagery is here. Pouring out blood like water, letting birds feast on dead bodies… does this sound like the kind of world that’s cool to belong to? When I read these verses it made me really put into perspective how depraved and sinful the things of the world are. I know it’s sometimes tempting for me to look at them as familiar, as good, as something that could never be truly evil – but when put into perspective, especially using these verses, its an eye opener.

  28. Zach V says:

    8 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.

    God saved His people from enslavement a long time ago and He saves people from enslavement now; enslavement from sin that is. The LORD paid the price for our sins so by repenting from them and having faith, He gives us the free gift of salvation. Many people say that God in the new testament is different than the God in the old testament, but if you look carefully, He is the same. He saved people back then and He saves them now. He judged people back then and He will judge every sinner who Has not experienced God’s love to hell. This makes me want to tell people about how Christ took on the wrath of God to save sinners like myself.

  29. Mike says:

    10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.

    Even as Asaph is praying for the deliverance of Israel, he prays that it will happen for the glory of God. Surrounded by people who were blaming God for rejecting His people, he is praying that God’s vengeance will be known throughout the nations, and that people will fear His name. In every situation, good or bad, he wanted God to have the glory. That is the way I need to be as well. There are times when hardships in my life will come, and I need to be committed to living for the glory of God through them. Whatever the situation, my character can be a testament to the work of Christ in my life, and I need to view everything in that light, instead of selfishly praying for everything to be easy for me.

  30. Alison says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Mmm this Psalm is an inspiration to having the right attitude toward trials! Asaph is asking God to deliver him from everything that threatens him, not so he can live a happy-go-lucky life but so God will be glorified THROUGH his life. I want to have that same attitude when things go wrong- God be glorified whatever my life’s situation is!

  31. jacksondahl says:

    3 Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
    7 Restore us, O God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
    19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

    God will always bet there to rescue and redeem me in times of trouble. This is so helpful to think when I feel myself ever slipping away from God, I can know that I can just trust that he’ll bring me back and “make my face shine”! That’s so awesome to think about.. When I am close to the Lord I can’t be happier!

  32. Austin Payne 2010 says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    This passage makes me think, why do I wish to be cleansed of sin? Is it to save myself? If I had to be honest, I’d probably say yes. I should have the desire to be made clean so I can further Glorify God with my life and have my Salvation show His power.

  33. ELLA says:

    19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
    Israelites kept on sinning againist God, but then kept going back to Him, so their relationship with Him kept going up and down. I learned that I need to have a steady relationship with God and not go up and down, and when I sin I will first of all try not to do it at first, but if I do I learn to try not to do it again.

  34. Mady says:

    Psalm 79:5 “How long, O LORD ? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?”

    I need to remember that our God is a jealous God, and he will not accept being put 2nd in my life! That means I need to ALWAYS put God first, in front of everything! Including my family, friends, school work, sports, etc. Having God at the forefront of my mind at all times will help me to be a better example towards my non-Christian friends too. They will see the joy that I have because of Christ, and that will create a jealously in them too. If I had other idols in my life, I would be seen as the same as the world, and there would be no difference. I need to always remember that I need to be an ambassador of Christ, keep him as my ONE AND ONLY God, and always have him as number 1 in my life!

    I decided tomorrow at school that I am going to ask a new girl I met at school what she thinks of Jesus Christ! I’m praying for God’s help, and that I would have the right words to say, and the boldness necessary! Revival at SCHS is coming!!!!!!

  35. hunter 2010 says:

    4 We are objects of reproach to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us.
    5 How long, O LORD ? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?

    This psalm reminds me God’s discipline and His jealous nature. Anytime that Isreal was out of line (worshiping idols especially) He let them have what they deserved so that they would repent and turn to Him. I want to recognize when I am being disciplined by God so that I can be obedient and repent!

    Psalm 80 reminded me about how we are supposed to be growing spiritualy. I need to make shure that I am daily getting watered and fed from God’s word so that I can grow to be a healthy obedient “tree” (Psalm 1:3) instead of a disobedient and shriveled up “twig” :)

  36. Allie Moorefield(: says:

    How long, O LORD ? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?
    This is a good verse! God is jealous and he wants and completely deserves to be our # 1 priority and # 1 thing in our life. I always remind myself when i get too caught up in dance or school, that God will never be second in my life and that I need to put Him in front of everything. I am praying that there will be a revival and that i will have the courage to tell people about Jesus. I truly want to be persecuted for my faith! It will make me stronger and will be a challenge for me. I have grown so much since revival 09 and am so happy and thank God for it daily. He is an awesome God and i am so glad that i am a part of the compass family now.
    Matthew 10:23! cant wait for wednesday (:

  37. Eric Walker says:

    8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    This is something we all should be praying daily for. For God’s mercy to come quickly and in abundance because without it, we are all condemned to hell. I need to also be praying the I do all things for the glory of God, and not for my own glory. Also, I need to continue to ask for God’s forgiveness to pour out on my life for the daily sins I commit, and just like this psalm says, I am in desperate need for all of these things. I am in desperate need for God’s mercy, his love, his forgiveness, his kindness, his strength….. the list goes on and on.

  38. Spencer Camp says:

    This guy Asaph—he endured some pretty tough times, and thats an understatement. The past few days reading the psalms of Asaph I have realized that being a man of God means suffering on this earth.

    Not only can I see this in the Psalms but also in my life too. Being in school for only a week I can already testify that people are naturally opposed to talking about the gospel. I mean, who wants to talk about the Bible? Lets just talk about meaningless “stuff” and wait until we’re dead so we can see if God’s wrath is really true.

    It seems the more and more I stand up for God and His truth people look at me as if I am wasting their good time. They would rather me overlook their sin then confront them, and Satan would have the same too. It makes me want to say with Asaph: “Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.”

    But standing up for the gospel, the power of God, and the truth is far from a burden. In fact I have no intention of closing my mouth—ever. The eternal rewards and the truth that I have been divinely loved by Christ far outweigh the petty snickering of my friends at school. Coming into this race I never doubted that being a Christian would be unpopular. When I was born again I counted the costs and now I never intend to cease standing up for the Gospel until I finish the race.

  39. It's Daniel Yo! says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Just like Eric said: we need God’s mercy. I feel so bad about all the sins I commit daily, but then i remember that God has awesome, neverending, power. Even though sinning is the equivilant of spitting in the face of God, i still cannot get over the fact that He still forgives us

  40. Hannah says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    I love this verse cause it’s such a great reminder! “…for the glory of YOUR NAME”. A lot of times we pray for our OWN glory… but we NEED to pray with a motive that our end goal would be to glorify God and not glorifying to ourselves….

  41. Gianna GOT MY COMPUTER FIXED FINALLY!!!! says:

    These 2 Psalms mention God’s anger, and His wrath. This reminds me that our God isn’t all warm and fuzzy, and how He loves us. He loves us by sending his Son to die for us on the cross. In this Psalm, they fear God! They are asking him not to pour out his wrath on them, but they people who don’t accept him. I need to think more like this, fearing God and not wanting his wrath. God hates sin and I sin! I need to take more time to recognize my sin and ask for God’s forgiveness and his help.

  42. Nachooooooooooo says:

    6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;

    This is a scary thought. God’s wrath is not something to mess around with. He will destroy all nations that do not acknowledge Him as God. Sadly, our nation is pushing God out of the picture and trying not to acknowledge Him. That spells bad news.

  43. Michael Downs says:

    The verse that spoke out to me was verse Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

    That means God Shines threw us and I need pray that God would at my school.

  44. P.J. says:

    “Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.”

    After reading over the passages twice, I realized the ending of this verse was subtle and important. In the majority of this chapter Asaph goes on and on about the wicked and how they defile the Lord, but in this verse he directs his focus on others’ sin, to his own sin. Realizing the world’s sin is something crucial, because we need to guide them towards Christ, but too much focusing on their sin can lead us away from focusing on our own sin, and living a repentant life. It reminds me of Matthew 7:3-5, verse 3 says, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” I need to search my self a lot more often and look for sin that is habitual, but unrealized. God help me to live a life of repentance and that others would see me as someone who is different, and won’t compromise!

  45. kelly causky says:

    While reading this passage I reflected more than ever on the future. About heaven and how that is our home where we will have everlasting joy and security. Recently, I have been caught up into this world, but I need to remember to always be living for God and my home, that is my future home. This world isn’t important. I even got creative imagining the best things that could be in heaven. I am so thankful for what Jesus did for us. Why aren’t I living better?

    18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.
    19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

  46. Collin S says:

    19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

    Great verse!

    God, I’m so grateful that he can restore my life each and everyday. Please Lord make your face shine upon us, it’s what we all want and what we need. I know I need to spread the word of God more often than I do right now!
    Thanks for the refreshment in your word God, each and everyday =D

  47. Michelle [slave for Christ] 2010 says:

    6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;

    mmhmm, our nation is totally deserving Gods wrath! With a president who pushes forth things that contradict Gods demands, our nation is becoming more and more evil. This is why I need to be sure that I am focusing on what is good and right, on things above, and not things of this world. I need to focus on how i can live a good and pleasing life for Christ in this world that wants the opposite. And as we have read throughout the Bible, Gods wrath can kill! I want to be sure that as a Christian, I am standing out from the evil and am pressing onward to gain the prize!!! I need to call on the Lords name in every circumstance, and I need to be sure that i am being an example of JC and livin it up for Christ so that others may mimmick Christs footsteps and our nation can push away from contradictions made to be against the Bible.
    As a Christian, i need to be realizing how much i want to be away from the evil in this world and how much i want to be with my father in heaven. Our nation is corrupt and i know that i cannot wait until i am home with the Lord in PERFECTION and eternal HAPPINESS that does not contain any hint of sin!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. Marissa Ramirez says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    I this is something I am praying for. Praying that some day that everyone will know about our God and what he has done for us. We are all sinners, and God sent down is only son for our sins. Eventhough I know I am not worthy of this; it shows how much God loves us and his love is unfailing. I know I am not perfect, and when I make a mistake I need to turn to God and repent of my sin(s). We all need help in our lives. There is always one person who is always there for us and that person is God.

  49. JWade says:

    19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

    i need to ask God to restore me and revive me often. things like school and sports sometimes get in the way but i need to pray for restoration and reilize how i can serve the Lord in school and sports.

    everyone please pray for revival this week at SVCS’s retreat

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  50. Karsten Klein says:

    8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    I try to pray for forgivness as much as possible. It is scary but awesome knowing Jesus could come any minute. When Jesus comes I want to have repented for my sins and be forgiven by Jesus. I try to live every moment like its the last but sometimes its hard to keep to that way of life.

  51. Laura Johnson says:

    18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name

    Revival! I love this verse and praying that this world would stop turning against God and instead turn to Him. And that God will use usti do His will and people would hear the Gospel and repent and put their faith inChrist because of it. And by the power of Almoghty God we could make orange county a place allabout praising God for who He truly is.

  52. Katie Slusher says:

    8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

    In this verse, the Psalmist prays for mercy, recognizing his dire need. He sees his own sin and realizes he needs the mercy that only God can provide. Mercy, or not getting the punishment I deserve, is something that I fail to daily recognize the importance. I pray that I would be aware of my own sin like the Psalmist and that I would recognize my continual need for mercy.

  53. Lauren Goudge says:

    hi.
    7 Restore us, O God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.—This is a great verse! I love how the Psalm repeats it. This is my prayer because I know that I really need God shown in my life to everyone around me! Especially those at my school right now who are definitely not living the way they should! I have done so much that I do not deserve to be saved by Jesus Christ and I need to remember that He died for me out of great love, love that I will never be able to fathom! He did this with the hope that we can all live out His will and that is what I plan to do! I definitely need to make sure I am doing my best to show Christ in my life everyday! Do everything for His glory not caring about other people!!!
    MARANATHA!!!

    great post mady!! im praying for you and that you will have boldness with your new friend! that is so encouraging!!
    stoked for TRUE NORTH UNITED! hope to see a lot of you there :D

  54. Christopher Eriksen says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    This is an interesting point, wanting to be forgiven for God’s name’s sake. When I read the Pursuit of Holiness, it talked about how we can sometimes try not to sin because we want to be successful and not fail rather than because we know it displeases God. Sometimes I don’t always want things like forgiveness for God’s glory, but really glory to God is what the universe is all about. Lord, please help me not to want anything for my glory but rather please help me to desire things such as being pure so that you would be praised as you should.

  55. Jasmine Douglas says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    I am so humbled by God’s grace over his children. We are so unworthy, yet he still loves us and blesses us. I want everything I do to bring God glory. This includes being an example to non believers and being set apart from them. What good is it if no one can see the difference in our daily lives?
    Praise God for the opportunities set before us every day to shine a light for him, let’s represent Christ the right way!

  56. Fëanor says:

    8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

    When I read this verse, I’m so thankful that God has given us his mercy. I am definitely in desperate need for God. This verse reminds me that I still can’t do it on my own. Sometimes, even though I know salvation is through grace only, I subconsciously think that I might earn “brownie points.” I need to rely on his grace solely and completely.

  57. Evan McKee says:

    12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord.
    13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

    It’s weird how much humans tend to think about themselves first. this verse is reminding me that I need to ask what we can do for God not what he can do for us. It seems like Asaph is talking about what he will do for God if God does something for him first, and that seems like it’s out of order. I need to do everything I can for God and THEN he will reward me in this life IF HE CHOOSES. He already rescued these people from Egypt, and they stopped praising God forever, which is what he promises to do in this verse. How much more does God have to do? it’s so easy to get this backwards. we need to act. he has already given us enough reasons.

  58. 9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Jas I agree with you! We need to depend on the Lord, He is so merciful and good to us and provides and protects and uses us for His glory. We have been given all we ever need through the work on the cross and that is daily something that humbles and motivates me to live a life worthy of the calling!

  59. Jenae nae :) says:

    18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.

    I love this verse and this is truly my prayer that all true northers can breakout a revival on our school campuses!!

  60. Pastor Bobby says:

    As some of you have already said these psalms are definitely intense!

    18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.

    God is the only one who can bring about revival. Only he can work in people’s hearts. We need him to work in our own hearts. We need him to work in the hearts of everyone at True North. We need him to work in the hearts of students at the high schools of Orange County.

    That is why I am going to pray to God every day for back-to-school revival!

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Also, I will pray to God for revival not just because I want to see it or so more people will come to True North, but because I wan’t God’s name to be glorified. I want people to know how awesome God is by seeing him do something that can’t be explained except that God must be working among high school students today! May God’s name be lifted high!

    See you at True North United Wednesday night!

  61. josh senger says:

    13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.
    i cant wait tilwe will be in heaven praising God forever and ever but i want to start here on earth by always being in worship of Him and praising Him for all that He gives me. i am very blessed to have the people and things that i have in my life and they r all because of God and i want to praise him for giving me that and most importantly, my salvation!

  62. Riley Hancock says:

    9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

    Not only forgive us for our sins Lord, but help us to flee temptation that leads to us sinning. Protect us from the evil one Lord.
