Psalms 60-61

He Will Tread Down Our Foes

To the choirmaster: according to Shushan Eduth. A Miktam of David; for instruction; when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60:1 O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses;
you have been angry; oh, restore us.
You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;
repair its breaches, for it totters.
You have made your people see hard things;
you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger.

You have set up a banner for those who fear you,
that they may flee to it from the bow. Selah
That your beloved ones may be delivered,
give salvation by your right hand and answer us!

God has spoken in his holiness:
“With exultation I will divide up Shechem
and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet;
Judah is my scepter.
Moab is my washbasin;
upon Edom I cast my shoe;
over Philistia I shout in triumph.”

Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Have you not rejected us, O God?
You do not go forth, O God, with our armies.
11 Oh, grant us help against the foe,
for vain is the salvation of man!
12 With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes.

Lead Me to the Rock

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. Of David.

61:1 Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.

Let me dwell in your tent forever!
Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah
For you, O God, have heard my vows;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

Prolong the life of the king;
may his years endure to all generations!
May he be enthroned forever before God;
appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!

So will I ever sing praises to your name,
as I perform my vows day after day. (ESV)

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Its so cool how the picture of the psalmist here shows how he needs the Lord in all times, weak or strong, good or bad! The same thing applies in our lives, we constantly need our God for we are nothing but a gust in the wind, compared to the everlasting power of the Lord!

  2. Brooke Miller says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

Good passage today! This verse is definitely comforting to me. With God we will gain the victory! This reminds me of Matthew 19:26. “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I know that I can trust in the Lord, knowing that he will never leave me and that I will gain victory because God is with me! I also do not need to fear men, because he will trample down our enemies! What an awesome thing to learn and comprehend…. that the Lord is so righteous and powerful, that with him ALL things are possible!

  3. Beth Lauder says:

Psalm 61: 8 Then will I ever sing praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

In this psalm where David is crying out for deliverance, he is sure to vow to praise God after he asks for His help. This psalm and many others include vows to praise in anticipation of God answering the psalmists’ prayers. These men set an excellent example for us to follow in times of trouble. They show us that in great need we must turn to God in prayer, and that praise must follow God’s deliverance. This is a God-honoring attitude. In times of trial or difficulty my first response must be to turn to God in prayer. I should not cry or seek help from my husband, friends, or family members until I have spent time with the Lord in prayer. Then, no matter what the results of my prayer requests, whether they are answered in my way or not, I must praise God. God deserves my praise every single day and by giving Him glory I can honor Him in my trials.

  4. Max says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

Like Brooke said, with God all things are possible. And only because of God are they possible. Whenever I accomplished something, whenever i won a sports game, or whatever it may have been, it was all God’s doing. Only with God will anyone succeed. The only reason that anyone succeeds is because God allows them to. When you have God on your side, that’s when you can succeed. If i trust in just myself alone, i’ll fail at whatever i might be doing. Praise God that He is on our side and will let us succeed!

  5. I am reminded, as most of you have said, that with God ALL things are possible. When I am in trouble or in need or in fear or in confusion HE must be the one that I run to, the one that I seek and the one that I trust; for He is my refuge and my rock. My prayer is that I will be like the psalmist here and that I will run to Him first in all seasons and wait on Him trusting that His answer to prayer will be perfect (even when it doesn’t match “my plan”).

  6. Elise says:

3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

What a great passage today! As many of you have said, these psalms remind us that God is our strong tower and only with Him can we truly succeed! Its amazing to me that in our relationship with God, unlike other religions, we need to run to Him with a realization of our powerlessness. Any time I face a trial, I am supposed to run to God, giving it all to Him because I trust that He has control over everything, and I do not. In verse 4, the psalmist says that he can’t wait to go to God’s kingdom so that he can take refuge in the shelter only He provides. I know I need to include this in my prayers every day! I long for the day when I can rest in the Lord in His kingdom forever- but until then, I need to be seeing Him as my refuge, my strength, and my strong tower in every situation.

    Goodmorning . . .

    I read . . .

    Psalm 60 & 61 . . .

“4. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” Selah

When I get to Heaven, I will be living in God’s tent. (not literally) But I will be with Him in Heaven, taking refuge under the one and only shelter: HIS WINGS. How amazing is that? To just think about, that I’ll actually BE WITH MY HEAVENLY FATHER. Instead of longing to be with Him, I’ll finally be there. I’ll be taking refuge under Him. AMAZING!

  8. Chelseaa says:

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

I am Yours Lord, forever I will live in Your “tent”. With my body and my soul I praise You. Only in You do I take refuge or find comfort.

  9. Nicholas Bonetto says:

12 “With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.”

I cannot win any spiritual battle without God, man cannot stand up against Satan by himslef. It is only with God that I can have victory over anyting that comes my way, and even when I do win, its not my victory, its God’s. When someone becomes a Christian, the entire world will be against him. How are we supposed to take the world alone? God will crush our enemies and give us victory if it is His will.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  10. Mike says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

This verse reminded me of Pastor Ben’s message this weekend. We can have the best that the world has to offer in terms of planning, advisors, and supplies, but if our plans do not line up with God’s then we will not succeed. Submitting to God’s will can be hard; it requires letting go of all your plans and desires, laying them at His feet and letting Him guide you where He wants to. We have to be willing to leave behind the things that we want, to see all our plans change, to end up in situations we would never have imagined ourselves in. But God’s plan is always the best plan, and I should be delighted to be a part of it! Furthermore, I need to be daily praying that God will show me the right path, and be determined to follow it no matter what the earthly cost.

  11. Ben Blakey says:

3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

David reflects on the past and how God has been his refuge, and then as he looks toward the future, he says he will continue to take refuge in God. In fact, he says he LONGS to dwell in God’s tent FOREVER!

I need to think the same way. Remembering how God has faithfully been my refuge in the past should only encourage me to seek him more and more in the future!

  12. Ian H. says:

    ~Psalm 61~
11 “Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.”

Wow. David really understood how things actually worked. He says that the Israelites are going through a terrible time and he asks God to help. He says that “the help of man is *worthless*.” Worthless! David realizes that the only reason they’re going to win or succeed in anything is because God is with them. Only “with God” will victory be gained. I need to realize this more in my life and, like David, trust in the Lord to be with me. On my own, I can’t do anything good; only with God’s help.

  13. Riley Hancock says:

1 You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry-now restore us!

God you dislike us because we sin and that is why you sent your only son to die on the cross for everyone’s sins so we may have a chance at making it into Heaven.

  14. Billy Morris says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

I like this verse because it is true that with God we will be able to go through life and not stray off course, but only with God. If I try to go through life on my own path, I will not be able to conquer the worldly sins that surrounds everybody’s life on this earth. Only trough God will we trample our enemies.

  15. shelby says:

8 Then will I ever sing praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

In this psalm David is asking for help and deliverance, but he is sure to praise him after the fact. I want to make praising God a daily thing. When I go through tough time it is important to praise God in the mean time. When we are in need we must go to God always.

  16. Steffen Eriksen says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

In all the battles David and his men are fighting in, David is seeking aid from the LORD. He sees that the help of man is worthless. No matter how many men an army has, or how skilled their warriors are, victory or defeat rests in God’s hands. He has the power to make the battle go whatever way He pleases it to do so. And so David cries out to God for help against their enemy, and he holds confidence that with God they will gain victory; He will trample down their enemies. And so I may not be on the frontlines of a battlefield going out to war in the physical sense like David and his soldiers were in, yet the concept is still the same. In whatever I do, whatever challenge comes before me that I must face, it is not my own power or the power of other men that will enable me to conquer it, but it is only with the help from God, with His aide I can succeed. I need to fully depend on Him and His strength in all situations. Too many people will foolishly put their confidence in the things of thins world, but I need to be different and find my strength solely in the LORD!

  17. Eric Walker says:

3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

God is our refuge, our strong tower, our fortress over us. Whenever we are tempted to sin or are struggling in life, God wants us to take refuge in him and to give him our troubles and trust that he will solve them according to his will. I know for me it is so easy to put all of my burdens on my back and try to solve them myself, but God wants us to cast our troubles on him. I pray that no matter what the situation is, that I take refuge in the Lord and trust that he will take all of my burdens and deal with them according to his will.

  18. PaYtOn :D says:

Ps 61:11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

I CAN DO NOTHING!!! All by myself that is. But with God I can do ANYTHING! In Matthew 19:26 it talks about how man is unable to do anything but with God all things are possible. Think about it, God created EVERYTHING! Everything we see, hear, touch, smell, imagine, and etc. was created by Him. If God could do that, just think about everything else He could do. God is all powerful and it would be best it we stuck with Him, because God always wins in the end. :]

    ***STICK WITH GOD!!!***

  19. 12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies

The Israelites know that when God is with them and they do what God says, they are guarenteed a victory over there enemies. Through out the Bible when you see that when God is with the Israelites, the Israelites beat their enemies.

  20. hunter 2010 says:

3 You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger.
4 But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Selah

The Isrealites in Psalm 60 had just experienced a surprise attack from the Edomites. While David was fighting with the main part of the army in the north; Edom (the decendants of Esau) attacked Judah in the south. This surprise attack left Isreal shocked and greatly confused (v.3) about weather God still loved and protected them. David realizes though that God is faithful and that even in the confusion of battle they can rally behind the “banner” of God and His truth/faithfulness. In my life I don’t want to be left “staggering” by the trials God allows to test me; instead I will look to God and find security/hope in His faithfulness and rally behind Him to fight for His truth!

7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.

The cool thing is this prayer was answered in Jesus Christ, David’s descendant! Jesus will reign over heaven and earth for eternity! MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. it's Daniel Yo! says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

Not having God on your side is a scary thing. It’s freaky to imagine the creator of the world going against you with the intent of hurting you. That’s why i’m on God’s team

  22. Michael Downs says:

The verse that spoke out to me was 12With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

Thta means we will win i went to a church camp and i learned that we are light and we need to shine gods glory.

  23. Trembling from fear of the Lord God Almighty, B says:

When I read these Psalms, I was just overwhelmed with the thoughts of Maranatha and the fact that God actually listens to us. Just thinking about all the troubles that David had to go through just amazes me. But each time he cries out to the Lord because he knows that He is his refuge and strong tower. He is his strength and He is the only one who will help you conquer over your enemies…and then at the beginning of Psalm 61 he says “listen to my cries”….it made me think about Ben’s sermon this weekend and how we are nothing, just mist in the wind….and yet He listens to us. He shows compassion and love for us and takes care of our needs and our wants as well. and even if everything on this Earth seems like a big deal, it’s also nothing and it’ll burn up one day. God will take me away one day just as He took away David…but maybe He’ll come sooner, maybe the rapture will occur and like the song says, “no more sorrow, no more pain and i will riiiise” I love that song because of it’s lyrics. It makes me wanna go so bad! And just thinking of how sometimes I think this life on Earth is so great….ohhhhh no, it’s nothing compared to HEAVEN!!!!! MARANATHA LORD!!!! MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  24. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 11,”Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.”

I like this verse because it talks about GOD being the only significant part of a battle. the help of men is worthless only GOD will decide who the victory comes to. Gideon had many men and GOD said there were too many and he made his army from thousands to I think a few hundred not sure about the numbers but thats besides the point. Gideon’s army won not because of their numbers or their skills but because they were on GOD’s side. If I want to bring someone to CHRIST I have to rely on GOD to make the change in their heart.

  25. Alyssa K says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies

When God is with us, who can be against us? He will give us triumphful aid if we trust in Him versus in man. This is great to know: that if we’re able to put our faith in Him, He will deliver us from our enemies.

  26. Brennan says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

Great comment Nick, I totally agree that man cant take on sin by himself. Only through God is it possible to conquer sin. Without God our lives would be disgusting and filled with sin and we would feel no conviction, but with God we have the power to resist temptation and conquer sin if God wills it.

  27. Jessica K says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

This reminds me that I need not fear men but only God. If God is for me, who can be against me? No one can compare to Him. The Lord is my strength. In Him I shall trust. If I have faith in God He will stand by me and help fight my battles. No one wants to fight against God etiher.

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

I love this verses in Psalm 62! They show David’s passion and solid faith. God is the rock I have built my faith in and more importantly I need to remember to keep it solid. Nothing should shake my faith. Other people’s opinions or words should not sway me. God is my refuge. I need to stand firm in my faith.

  28. This passage assures me that God is all powerful over everything. Only God can help me when I am facing the enemy. He is my refuge and my strength, and will hold me up when I am going through times of trouble. God is the sustainer and will reign forever over this universe. I need to constantly be checking that I have a lifestyle of worship that is praising my Savior and I need to be singing praises to Him daily.

  29. Jasmine Wonton says:

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Great comments ! like this verse a lot. It’s such a great analogy that God is my rock because He is strong and will always sustain me. Like some other people said, I need to keep my faith solid and not let it be shaken or compromised. I need to put all my trust in the Lord and remember that I need to call to Him and not myself.

  30. Christopher Eriksen says:

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

With all the things going on right now pressing on my mind, I really don’t give much thought to heaven and being in God’s presence. But heaven is going to be just as real of a place as orange county and God promises that He is going to take us to be there soon. Even though the going might be tough now, I need to remind myself of how great Heaven will be and always rejoice that I will soon be in God’s presence. I need to be longing to be in God’s presence like David so I won’t be bogged down with what is going on right now but will be looking forward to being with my Lord and be eagerly preparing for His return.

  31. Sarah G.! says:

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

David seems pretty desperate right now seen by the way he pleads with God for help!! I just loved these verses because of the way he just pours out his soul on the Lord, it is so humbling!! He shows such dependence on God, making one feel like he could die any second without Him. My prayer time needs to look more like this!! :D

  32. jeff Mohdugno 2010 says:

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.

This verse reminded me of the spiritual growth chart and how I need to be working out my spiritual muscles all the time. I am working on my praying. So I am writing my prayers in a book so I can look at in and see improvement. Prayer is something I must be doing. Like this verse says I need to be crying to my God and praising his name.

  33. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

This Psalm is a great example on how I need to be praying to God. I already talk to Him as someone who I respect, and know that they have authority over me. But these verses especially helped me think about my daily life as a Christian, and how humble and lowly I am being. David ended up being the king of Israel, and he continued to be humble toward God. So for now on, I will be like David and in my day to day life, and prayer life, I will be as humble, and slave like to people, and especially to God.

  34. Murphy Danahy says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

Trusting in GOD makes the most sense, dosen’t it? He can do anything, and can help you infintley more than any human. He has all the power, and therefore we should rejoice that he is with us.

  35. ELLA says:

3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

He is always and always will be my refuge. I just love that fourth verse.

  36. jacksondahl says:

1 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

It is important that I know that I can do nothing without the Lord as my strength. If I rely on any other people/things/etc I will get no where. It is imortant that I make sure I’ve got God on my side and I’m on his team and not someone else’s.

God is soooo amazing!! He will be there for us forever as long as we believe. What an amazing promise!! F.O.R.E.V.E.R. God loves us so much and He is unshakable, and He is a tower of refuge for all those who seek Him. Today was my first day of high school and it was awesome!! However, there are a lot of kids who don’t know Him or care to know Him and will attepmt to persecute me for my beliefs. God help me so that I will stand strong for you and not waver. That I will trust in you and fight for you too. Also that I will be bold in evangelizing and say the right things when recruiting others and standing up for my faith in you.

  38. Francesca Staggs says:

Hey everyone! I like verse 11 of chapter 61:

“Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.”

God makes EVERYTHING happen. We cannot change anything or stop anything from happening because God controls it all. Because we are worthless in this way, we need to put all of our trust in the LORD. I really need to work on trusting in God instead of in myself when I need help.

  39. Dominic S says:

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

David is telling God how he calls to God no matter where he is, no matter how he feels, because he knows that no matter what situation he is in, God will lift him to a place higher than anywhere on Earth. I need to insert this mentality in my life, because i often find myself saying “Oh i dont feel very good, I dont think i can pray” or “I just dont feel like talking to God” when David is saying that he makes sure that he prays no matter what, and David went through much worse than I do. So from now on i will humble myself and do what God wants no matter what.

  40. GaBrIeL VoRiS 2010 says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

Without God, the efforts of man are completely useless. It is a scary idea just thinking about not having the Lord on my side because right now He is by my side. I never want to experience again what it is like to be against or without God.

  41. Zach V says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies

The same thing applies to the battle against sin. I can’t kill sin on my own but through God I can. I still must willfully choose not to sin but God helps me. He does 99.99999999999% of the work. LORD, let me rely on you to defeat sin and also let me willfully choose not to sin.

  42. Spencer Camp says:

3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

This, I think is the theme I see in these two chapters: Something terrible has happened, God left their presence and now they are being defeated, consequently they cry to God “restore us to your favor”

The fact is in this psalm, that even if a Christian is in trouble they can call to God for deliverance. But first they must confess their sin and God will cleanse them from their unrighteousness.

Next time something “bad” happens, as did with the Israelites, I will confess my sins and trust in the Lord.

  43. 1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

David brings his request before the Lord and does not stop. He is crying to him from the ends of the earth till his heart grows faint!? I need to have this persistence and faith to bring my request before the Lord tirelessly without losing heart. This encouraged me to pray about some things in my life that I have stopped praying for. There is no one else to turn to who can answer, I will pray that God will lead me to him in my prayers.

  44. Laura Johnson says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

God knows everything and when were in trouble he is the one to seek help from. He can guide us to victory and is the ultimate help.

  45. Kelsey says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

This is a great verse. It gives us a glimpse of God’s power and glory. It goes along well with Matthew 19:26, saying that with God all things are possible. With God on our side we are unstoppable, that includes against the devil. We will never be tempted beyond what we can bear, thanks to the Lord. And with God on our side we will be able to bear a lot. We just need to ask the Lord for strength and help, in his name. If it is in His will, it will happen.

  46. 10 Is it not you, O God, you who have rejected us and no longer go out with our armies?

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

Verse 11 in this chapter was my favorite. It made me think of when I go through a hard time or when I am in need of guidance on what to do, who do I go to? The answer for me and probably most girls is their best friends. I know I value what my friends have to say. But this verse says diffferetly. The help of man is worthless. Wow. But it is so true! I know that if I go to God and ask for help, he knows the big picture and what is going to happen anyway. I need to spend some more time in prayer, and also make sure that I go to God first and heed his advice rather than my friends.

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.—Love this verse! It reminds me that I need to make God my number one above EVERYTHING and have Him be the first one that I call on!

  48. P.J. is striving for a Maranatha mindset! says:

Verse 4 says, “I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah”

David is excited and overjoyed at the thought of meeting his Kurious in paradise. I need to possess this mindset and lift my eyes to the skies as I await my Lord’s returning. It really hit me in Bobby’s sermon in the main service a couple weeks ago when he noted that many Christians at our church have been saved for 30, 40 years and have been praying each day that God would come and rescue them from their fleshly desires (and they have been praying to someone they have never even seen or touched). It makes me think that I can’t wait that long for his glorious returning, but if it is necessary I am willing to wait however long it takes to meet Him. I want to have the same mindset that Paul had in Phil. 1:21 where he said “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Lord help me to eagerly await your coming and be prepared for you to descend from heaven. I want you to find me doing your will!

    Maranatha!

  49. Boyd Jorden says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

This psalm offers a great reminder to me to always turn to God first for my aid. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the stresses of starting a new school year and to turn to myself or other people to deal with the daily challenges I face. But as the psalmist points out, ultimately “the help of man is worthless”. God has told us to be anxious about nothing and to come to him for everything (Philippians 4:6). I need to remember to always present my requests to God, and to do so with thanksgiving. And when I do, I can be confident that my Lord will hear me and provide for me. God’s love is unfailing.

  50. Mady says:

Psalm 61:1 “Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.”

I NEED to cry out to God with my prayers. He is my refuge, and whatever I ask in his name, he will make it happen. I need to pray to God to help me when I’m struggling, to lift me back up when I’m down. He is the only one who can help me when I stumble and only he can restore me again.

  51. Jasmine Douglas says:

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.

This verse reminded me that i need to bring everything before the Lord in prayer. It’s our way of communicating with God. I want to pray with a trusting heart, and know that God will answer. In Psalm 145:18 it says, “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” That’s a promise.

  52. emily :) says:

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

Wow! This just makes me think…. MARANATHA! This verse is actually just a poetic way of saying “Come, O LOrd!” and, I can’t wait for that to happen! When I will all be “dwelling in [our Heavenly Father's] tent FOREVER.” In His holiness and beauty… Taking “refuge in the shelter of [His] wings. “How awesome will that be!

  53. Melissa Cox says:

I agree with so many of you who have been encouraged by Psalm 61 to cry out to God continually…not to stop praying…be persistent in prayer. I’m also reminded to be thankful for a God who wants me to come to Him in prayer and is faithful to hear me.

  54. Pastor Bobby says:

I have definitely done some praying to the Lord the last couple of days and I have been sick…

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

What a great encouragement it is to know that God listens to our prayers and that even when we feel weak and far away from him…praying actually gives us his strength. Notice that by the end of verse 2 here it is almost as if David has been lifted up. He was praying to God and know he feels like he is finding shelter and refuge in a higher rock.

I want to thank God for helping me while I have been sick and will continue to turn to him in prayer throughout all of life’s difficulties and challenges.

  55. Alison says:

8 Then will I ever sing praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

Each day I’m given is another day to sing praises to God! Every day should be about worship, whether that’s through actually singing praises or just living a life of service and obedience and giving the glory to God. Each day is about pleasing God and doing what he wants me to do- I’ve committed my life to serving Him so that’s my life’s goal. THAT’S what I want to be constantly on my mind, instead of getting caught up in the things that don’t matter at all. I want to be a slave of the Lord!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. Jordan Anderson says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

It is so encouraging to know that God is with us always, and will take down our enemies! who better to have on your side than Jesus Christ.

  57. Rebekah Foreman says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

With God on our side we can be victorious any time. God will trample down the enemies. God is so powerful. Anything is possible with God.

  58. Katie Slusher says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

The help a man can provide without the Lord’s divine assistances is worthless. I need to constantly remember this when the help that I tend to look for is my own. I pridefully think that I am in control of the situation and rely on my own efforts. However, this verse reminds me that only the will of God will ultimately provide the help and control I seek after. I need to fully put my trust in God alone for the control in my life.

  59. Jenae (= says:

12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

This is such a cool verse because it makes me think of the end times when Jesus will be riding back on his horse with a double edged sword coming out of his mouth and taking down all the those people who hate him! And we will get to go to heaven with him<3

  60. Sara L. says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.

There are so many people (including myself at times) who look at outcomes of certain situations and say something to the effect of “Well it wouldn’t have worked if these people hadn’t helped”. This verse is saying that anyone who was helping to fight wouldn’t have done any good…it is only God who can truly help us. I need to make sure that I’m always relying on Him to work out things in my life and not other people.

  61. Alicia Karlsson says:

11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless

This verse is a great reminder of the sovereignity of God is who is control of everything that happens on earth. It is so easy to put our hope and trust in man, Think about how many people seek out the advice and wisdom from Dr. Phil and Oprah. When instead these people should be down on their knees seeking God’s wisdom. We can’t rely on others to deliver us from our troubles. Mom and Dad aren’t always going to be there for you. But God will. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he shall make your paths straight.

  62. kelly causky says:

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah

As Christians what we need to be looking forward to most is being with God for all of eternity. Our excitement for Disneyland or the beach should not surpass our excitement for dwelling with the Lord forever in heaven. Through reading the Bible everyday we can learn how great the future is going to be when we meet Jesus!

  63. Haley Litz says:

I was thinking along the same lines as Christa. I love how the verses say I call from the ends of the earth and even as my heart grows faint!! How weaksauce I find my prayers compared to this. God is able and able to do anything. I can’t grow faint of praying for things I need to keep at it and not give up praying for different things. Like Christa used the word persistence in prayer. He never stopped praying and bringing those requests before the Lord. I need to follow that example and have diligence in my prayer.

  64. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 61

5 For you have heard my vows, O God; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

David is thankful to the Lord for His faithfulness in honoring David’s covenant with God. He is well aware that all of his success is attributed to honoring his vows to God. David’s vows were made acceptable to the lord because of his sincerity. God hears our vows and knows if we are speaking with sincerity or if we are speaking with deceit. Before we make a covenant with God we need to make sure that our motives are sincere and that we plan on following thru with our words. It is ignorant to think that God will not hold you to every vow that you promised to Him in prayer. God is faithful to honor those who are faithful and keep their vows to the Lord as we see here in this chapter. I pray that like David we will have a fear and reverence for God that is reflected by our obedience. Only thru our obedience to Christ can we gain a heritage that leads to eternity with God.

  65. Michelle [slave for christ] 2010 says:

7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.

Im not sure if this verse has a hidden meaning or something different to it but when i read it i thought of praying for others’ salvation. When i pray i need to be sure i am praying for things that the Lord would want me to pray. At the end of a prayer, some people say “In Your name..AMEN” well when I pray that, i need to be sure i am praying for things that would be in Gods will for me. I need to pray for others’ salvation and strengthening of my faith and a stronger hunger to read Gods word and worship Him!!!God is good

    MARANATHA!
