Submission to the Authorities
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
Fulfilling the Law Through Love
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (ESV)

8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Loving one another is something I am really praying we will improve on at True North. Lately I have been thinking about the story of The Good Samaritan in Luke 10! He didn’t just keep going on his way, but stopped when he saw someone else who needed help. How good are we at seeing those around us who need help? And when we do see someone do we stop and help them? I am praying that the Lord will make me more ready to serve those around me!
Great point…I’m praying that we will love others (like the good Samaritan) in 2010. Good stuff!
I’m prayin for the same thing as well as revival! :D
ELLO… I read
I like verse 7,”Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”
I like this verse because it tells us to give to those what is owed. But what is owed to anyone but what we want for ourselves. We are to love out neighbors as ourselves which I am not the best at doing. I have noticed a pattern of if someone does something to me I do the same to them In my eyes it just sweet revenge. This is not what GOD wants and the only person who is really getting hurt is me. I need to focus on what GOD wants me to do which is love others as myself no matter what they have done to me. I need GOD’s help to get this down because I am naturally a short-tempered person and I am struggling to make that change. I need to do what I want done to myself cause when I do something wrong to someone I want them to forgive and forget not seek revenge on me.
CYA
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
If we are born again, we are armed by the Holy Spirit with the Light of our Savior, Jesus Christ. And our offense is the Sword: the Word of God. What a powerful and compelling reason to be in the Word, so that I can stand up under the sin and darkness that is constantly attacking me.
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
When you look at the large picture, God is the Creator and everything else is his creation. He is the authority over all of the people living here on earth. There is no other authority outside of God, and the wordly authorities that do exist are put there by God. And so God commands us to be subject to his authorities, but also to that of the worldly authorities of which he is in control. Especially as a high schooler, I have a lot of authorities. At home, I have my parents, at school I have the principal and my teachers, with sports I have my coach, at church I have pastors and leaders. Even though God is the authority over all, he has also placed people like these to be in my life. And so as I have been commanded by God to do, I must be subject to their authority. As Pasotr Bobby talked this weekedn about the relationships with high schoolers and students, I need to submit to my parents’ authority no matter what. If I’m in the middle of doing something, yet I hear one of my parents call for me to do something, I need to drop what I’m doing to obey them. And when I think I’m right and they’re wrong, I still need to show respect and submit to their authority, regardless of whether I truly was right or wrong.
School is another huge place where most people seem to lack the respect and obedience to authorities. It’s so common for high schoolers to grumble about how much homework a teacher gives and how much they hate that teacher, but that doesn’t go with God’s commands. I need to respect my teachers and be subject to their authority. I need to do my homework without grumbling so that it will honor God in the way that I obey God in obeying my teacher. And government is a big deal with authorities. There may be a lot in our government and politics that I disagree with strongly, but that doesn’t give me excuse to be disrespectful. For example, though I may extremely disagree with much of what our president is trying to do, that doesn’t mean that I don’t pray for wisdom for him and that I don’t follow the rules made. I still need to have my opinions, not just brainlessly following what the government says, but I still need to respect them. No matter what authorities say, I need to be subject to them in all circumstances, inless in contradicts with what God commands me to do! Under all other circumstances, I need to respect and honor all authorities!
Wurd.
I know that this is something that I really need to work on as well. Steffen, let’s keep each other accountable on this!
Yess! Let’s both step it up starting today!
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This verse sums up Paul’s call to action for Christians – to put on Christ. Paul uses this metaphor of putting on clothing not just to instruct us to imitate Christ’s character, but also to live in close personal fellowship with Him. As Christians, we have been born again and freed from our slavery to sin, but we must do as Paul says and “make no provision for our flesh, never gratifying its desires.” As I read this verse I was convicted of some of the “respectable” or “subtle” sins I can give in to…complaining, being unthankful, or selfish. I am not to make ANY provision for my flesh, which means that subtle sins are just as sinful as those we categorize as more serious. I am praying daily for God to rid me of the subtle sins that want to rear their ugly heads in my life and memorizing Scripture to help me combat my sins. It is my prayer that I would not become complacent about fighting my old sinful nature, but that I would do as Paul instructs and fight daily against it.
Excellent! We can’t wait for small groups to start again!
Me tooo!!! I miss small groups :)
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
A lot of times, I think we acknowledge this commandment, and probably obey a lot of the time, but we sometimes neglect to love others. Sometimes it is because we want something in return. But real love is love with any expectations, like the love Jesus Christ showed us when he died on the cross. Now that show of love deserves more in return than anything we could ever do. Let’s follow Christ’s example in love.
9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
As one familiar CBC going Englishman once said, “That about sums it up!”
Love is the goal of God’s commands. To love like God wants us to is to think less about ourselves and more about the people around us. To treat others in the way that we would like to be treated makes sense. I think we know this as Christians. But what makes this statement profound and mind blowing is not the statement itself, but the practical application of it. As we learned again yesterday, it is one thing to know the right thing to do, it is quite another to do it. I pray that I would not only know I should treat others this way, but do it today and beyond!
But “Cawn I awsk sumfin else, too?’ Why do you tawk so funny?”
Mat 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
When we ‘put on Jesus’ there is no room for the bad stuff! Thank You Lord for the righteous way and please come soon!
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
I want to wear Jesus Christ, representing him in all I do! I do not want to make any provision for my flesh and be tempted to satisfy my flesh. All the little sins I do, are just as great as as the ones we think that are more serious, as Beth mentioned! I do not want to be compromised, I want to live full-time for Jesus and obey him with my whole heart. I want to be bold and stand out this year, having people see clearly that I am a Christian who is on fire for the Lord! There are two teams: God’s team, or Satan’s team, and I know that to gratify my flesh’s desires would be Satan’s team! Therefore, I want to take no part in satisfying my earthly desires. God is truly all that matters, and I am so thankful for everything he has done in my life! I want to have my life be of righteousness and not evil! I pray that I will never be lead astray and that I will be full-time for Jesus forever and ever!!!!!!
Chyeaaa full-time for Jesus! I agree Brooke, 110%. Keep being on fire for Christ! :)
“Live full-time for Jesus”…i love it!!!:)
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
i found this verse to be extremely convicting. there are so many rules that i dont follow because i think they are “dumb” or “pointless”. but in reality, i am resisting God who has appointed the authorities. some rules that high schoolers, including myself, totally disregard: not texting in class, texting/calling on the phone while driving, obeying traffic laws, listening to teachers, the list goes on and on. even though to us these rules are mundane and in our opinions, pointless, God still commands us to obey them. and as God’s children and His disciples, we are called to obey all of the rules set before us, as long as they dont cause us to sin.
the second part of this verse tells us that those who resist the rules will be judged. this is not talking about judgment in hell, for Christ was punished for us. but this judgment could be negative consequences for my actions. i may get my phone taken away in class, or get a detention. and as Christians, we must live above reproach, and getting a detention certainly isnt above reproach. our judgment may be more serious, like me getting in a car accident for texting and driving.
we also will be judged when we see Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). here we are rewarded for good things we have done for God, but we also will have to give an account for all of our sins. in this sense, we will also incur judgment. it may include a loss of rewards in heaven as well. at the prophecy conference this weekend, Phil de Courcy spoke on the judgment seat of Christ. the thing that convicted me most was how Pastor De Courcy took us to Luke 22:61-63, where Jesus and Peter make eye contact after Peter denies Jesus. Pastor De Courcy told us that that very well could be the type of look we get from Christ if we dont serve as we should. as Christians, we dont want Christ to tell us “You did alright” or “You didn’t do too well” when we see Him, rather we should want to here “Well done, My good and faithful servant”. i pray that God will help me understand how important it is to obey all the authorities that He has placed in my life. i need to be a good witness in obeying all rules (as long as they arent sinful) and do them joyfully because God has commanded me to. give me the strength to live for You God, in all areas! Any Thing, Any Place, Any Time!
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Wow I just LOVE Romans! It has its confusing parts but ou read a few different versions and you somewhat start to get it. :] I enjoyed this verse becasue it reminds me of Pastor Bobby’s sermon yesturday and how we need to obey our parents and have a relationship with them. God is an even higher authority and I need to obey Him for He is the altimate authority!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
What a way to sum it all up. Jesus did when talking to the Pharasees and Saducees about the greatest command. Love. What a word. One of my favorite passages about love, that usually comes around valentines day is: 1 Chronicles 13. I need to love and not hate, for hating someone is like murder (is mentioned somewhere in NT).
God showed His love and we need to follow His son’s example that He set on earth. Praise the Lord for He is good!!!
See you all at the Beach!!! Rain or Shine!
So excited for REVIVAL!!! :D
***MARANATHA!!!***
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
i thought this was a little bit confusing but i think its saying something on the lines of Christ is coming back and you need to repent of your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ in order to be saved. When they say ” the hour has come for you to wake from your sleep” i believe he is saying repent of your sin and wake up from your sin and turn to Jesus for he is the only way to heaven. Maranatha!
Rom. 13:12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
“The day is at hand!” — “Cast of the works of the Darkness!” — “Put on the armor of Light!”
The Day of the Lord is coming (soon)…am I ready?
If there is one thing I learned at the Prophecy conference this weekend, this is it: don’t waste a moment of your life…He is coming soon; be ready; work ambitiously for Him.
1 John. 2:28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
How horrible would it be if when Jesus came we were ashamed before him because of all the wasted time we spent on earth, which could of been for giving him glory? If we hid from him because we were embarrassed? I want to meet Jesus when he comes in joy and confidence, because I diligently served him on this earth. I pray that I would do that in all sincerity.
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!! (Come O Lord)!
mmmm great point Spencerrr! Gotta be ready for the day that comes our way! :D
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
This reminded me of last week’s sermon, about the parent-kid relationship. At my age, they are the authority and government (in a sense). God put them there, and He gave them the power to have authority over me. So, because God put them in that spot, i have to obey them, because that’s obeying God. God even made a big point about how important it is to obey your parents. I’m glad that we don’t use the same form of punishment for disobeying them! (In the OT they killed disobedient children). God put my parents in my life for a reason, and i need to submit to them.
These are some great verses. They tell us that GOD is close and when he comes we should be found worthy and holy in him. GOD can come back at any time. What will we be doing? Will we be sinning or bringing honor and glory to the LORD GOD almighty who reigns forever AMEN.
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
I don’t know any Christian that would say he or she would willingly go against a direct order from the mouth of Jesus Christ. But in effect, every time we disobey an authority, we are doing just that. All authority – not just in the government, but our parents and teachers as well – have been put in place by God for a specific purpose. And our job as Christians is to obey them in everything that does not contradict the Bible. Even if we don’t like their commands, we need to respect them, and obey them as if we were serving the Lord. This was convicting to me, as I sometimes am tempted to take commands form authorities much more lightly than I should. But I need to see figures of authority as people put in place by the Lord, and therefore respect and obey them.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
This is a very exciting thought, as long as I am doing what the Lord would have me do. If a Christian is playing with fire by meddling in sin, he will not be looking forward very much to the Lord’ coming. We don’t know when it’s going to be, but we know it’s closer now than it’s ever been. In 2 Peter 3:11, Peter asks what kind of people we ought to be, in light of the coming Judgement of the earth. It is clear that we need to becoming more and more holy, daily growing in our faith through sanctification and meditation on the Word. I want to be ready for Christ’s return, which means I need to be resolved to to fight any hint of sin in my life, grow closer to the Lord in prayer and study of His Scripture, and be bolder than ever before in bringing His Gospel to the people around me!
For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
These few verses really convicted me this morning on how I view the government and the people who are in leadership positions. I lack respect and also find myself talking badly about the people God has placed in authority over this nation. Even though I may not understand why certain people are where they are I still need to respect them as the leaders of this country and remember that each person in leadership in this nations has been instituted by God. Instead of talk badly about them I really do need to be praying for our nations leaders. God is sovereign and he placed each one of those leaders exactly where they are supposed to be. It is not a surprise to him Obama is our president. Even though these men our dark in there thinking God is still controlling every situation, as he calls people all over this nation to repent that he may be glorified in there lives. He has complete supreme authority over all things why fret over one man . Bad things may happen to our country but that by no means, means that God is not apart of it. That makes me think of the verse in Lamentations 3
37 Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and good things come?
39 Why should any living man complain
when punished for his sins?
40 Let us examine our ways and test them,
and let us return to the LORD.
My prayer for this nation of America is that we would examine our ways before the Lord and return to him. May this nation repent of there sins before the Lord and not forsake our first love. And if we do not may God continue to shake us up and get our attention. And as the christians of this nations I pray we will be more bold, and have more courage as we proclaim the truth to a dieing world and may we also love with compassion and may our hearts break for those who are lost. I pray that revival will come back to the united states of america and Lord may it start with us!
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
we need to love others more then we love ourselves, we need to show compassion and care for them. So the next time we can do something for ourselves, we need to think about what we can do for others
c u all at the compass room for summer in january
haha hmmm Trevor hmm. Did you apply this today? ;D just kidding. Love yuh Trebs.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
I like verses 8 and 10 because it is saying to me that i really owe nothing to anyone…the only thing i need to do is love them. Loving everyone is obeying God and what He has commanded. God loved us soo much and the least we could do is love others just as He loved us, becuase that is what He wants.
The night is gone and the day is here! I want to put on the full armor of God so that i can completely do His will throughout the rest of my day..and i cant do that without Jesus Christ.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
Every single day we live is a day closer to the return of Christ!! “the night is gone; the day is at hand” – which is so exciting just knowing that we won’t have to live in this darkness much longer BUT knowing this we should also be evangelizing full force and gaining as much knowledge about our Lord as we can in the present so we will be ready when He returns!
great point!!! i totaly agree with you!
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
right when I read this verse I realized how important it is. God has put authorities over me. Such as: my mom and dad also my teachers. And when I do not obey them I am disobeying God!!!!! That is a big deal. Looking at my authorities that God has put over me really changes how I veiw them. I pray that as this new semester starts tomorrow I will be ready to have a joyful heart and do all my school work to the best of my ability.
Maranatha
Good Morning!!!!
Verse 10 “Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” Beauuuutiful! I love that. We simply need to weave more love into our lives. It is a simple task but we make it so hard these days. We always try to find something wrong with a person when we should be looking for the good and fun in them. I know I condemn others too but I always try to find something I like about them and to tough it out even if their is something I don’t like about them. Try to find something you like in someone and love them for that, don’t dislike them for their faults.
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. this is saying to obey the governing authorities in our lives. so we need to respect the rules that people put out even if they are super lame. i need to work on obeying these rules and obeying them with a good heart.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
The only debt I owe is love. My bill is a continuing debt of love that I owe to others as a reminder of God’s love to me. I am so grateful for His love and want to show others the wonderful love He has given me. My Bible talked about When Jesus died for us, he paid a debt I never could have paid and he doesn’t ask me to repay him back but all he asks of me is to turn around and show that same love to others. Later on in verse 10 it says, ” therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. ” I really like that because in the old testament to fulfill the law they and to follow all these strict guidelines and do sacrifices but now in the New Testament we see that love is the fulfillment of the law. When I think about it, it seems like love is so easy. I remember when I was a baby Christian and I just thought it was being nice to people. but that doesn’t even compare with God’s love for us. True love is to love as God does regardless of how I feel towards that person. 1 Corinthians 13 gives the full definition of love. Love is totally selfless, it isn’t self seeking, doesn’t keep any record of wrongs, and always perseveres. It’s hard because my flesh wants the opposite of that. I pray that I can truly love people and that they will know I’m His disciple by my love.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
This is very important for us to know. When we think of evangelizing to people we know really well, we often say to oourselves, “theres always tomorrow.” Truth is, we do not know if tomorrow will ever come. Only God knows what day will be our last. I need to start living my life like it could be my last and try my hardest to get God’s word out to the people around me. It isn’t about me or my satisfaction, but for God’s glory and to fufill His command to love others. If we truely love someone, we won’t be able to stop telling them about the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the cross.
Hope to see every one at Summer in January :)! God Bless!
God has the governing authority to our lives and we need to us every moment we have to help people to grow closer to you.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This is really important! Whenever I’m evangelizing, and I get nervous, or the person I’m about to talk to seems busy, I always say to myself, “Oh they can wait one day.” or something like that. But this verse is contrary to that! It says the night is gone and the day is at hand. Verse 12 goes on to say how we should turn away from our sin and put on the “armor of light.” Like the sword of the spirit, boots of peace, and breastplate of righteousness. Then vs 14 says to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” and to not listen to fleshly desires. How do i resist my own sinful flesh? By being strong in His word! The Lord is my Rock and Savior! With Him, I can do anything through Him because He is all powerful!
I’ve noticed a pattern in my behavior that really opened my eyes to how much as a Christian I depend on the Lord. When I miss church one weekend, or don’t pray at night, or don’t do my daily study like BSF and SOTD, I start to fall. And as I start to fall I put off more and more what I need to do to stay close to God. But His own hear His voice when He calls and He calls to me sometimes gently and sometimes with a harsh awakening to reality. Verse 12 is really important to me, the “day is at hand” I need to stop being lazy and stand up! Put on the armor of God and go share it with the world! I pray every day that the Lord will give me strength, boldness, and the right words to say when speaking to others of Him. Praise to the Lord!!! :-D
P.S. Thank you God for the rain we get to enjoy today!! :D
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
this verse is awesome because we should never hate or not love someone because the is one thing that we should always have to offer. If we dont love one another there is no way that we can be strong against sin.
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
We may worry about sinning against another person….gossiping, fighting, getting angry, whatever it may be….but all of these sins can be avoided easily if we just love others….We are called to love! Love can almost be considered an anti-sin device….because if we are truly loving others we are not sinning….that is an awesome thing to know…if our lives are consumed with love both for our God and for others….how can we sin?
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
MMMMM this reminds me of sitting in class with my friend talking about Obama. She is always saying how horrible Obama is and just complains about what he is doing and describes him in a negative manner. This always tempts me to say something about him… but then I think of verses like these that keeps my mouth shut!! Obama is my authority and I need to respect him as a fellow American citizen under God’s control!! :D
Well said, S.G. We often feel justified in slamming an authority just because his/her ideals are opposed to ours (& hopefully Christ’s), but think of who was in charge in PAUL’s day–the corrupt Roman empire with a despotic Caesar who hated Christians & persecuted them savagely…
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
This is a huge challenge to high school students that I witness daily. There is so much negativity between people and it should not be this way. God commands us to love one another, and we should fulfill this law. Personally, I am working on this myself and I am also helping my friends with this too. We all must learn to love one another no matter what, just as God has loved us all as well.
Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval
The first part of this chapter is to submit to authority because they were instituted by God. God has establish authority. Then it says God appointed these people who are the rulers. Then in verse Paul is saying that the rulers are not good all the time, that they do some bad things.
“…You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
This verse really speaks to me, it is so often that someone does something to another person that is not very nice, it could be as much as ignoring them, or not talking to them when you see them. But you should treat others and love them as well…as much as you might love yourself, or just really treat others as you want to be treated. Loving one another does not cause any harm to anyone.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
I want to wear the Lord and praise Him in all that i do!! Just like Brooke said, “Live full-time for Jesus!!!” This year i want to be bold and stand out, having people at school notice that i am different and make them question why. I want to be on fire for Jesus Christ and not compromising to things of the flesh.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
Every day we wake up is another day closer to seeing Jesus Christ face to face!! i get chills when i say it too! We need to be stoked out of our minds when we wake up just knowing we are one day closer. BUT we still need to be evangelizing to others and getting closer to the Lord and learning more about him until the day He returns!
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
I like how this verse says “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” because the Lord is perfect and we should strive to be more like him. I also like how it talks about not giving into your flesh. When you are not being constantly reminded about not giving into sinful desires its easy to just give into our flesh. This verse is such a great reminder and something I should be striving to do everyday.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
This gets me excited! With every passing day, we are one day closer to the Lord’s return. In light of this truth, this verse calls us to wake from sleep. Not in a hitting the snooze buttom multiple times and rolling out of bed kind of way, but immediately emerging from sleep. Emerging from our indifference toward a renewed fervour in the Lord because He is returning. HASTE THE DAY!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Love isi a very big deal in God’s eyes. To Him, love is fulfilling the law. If you have love, I mean real love, you must know the love of God. In turn your desire to not sin is your life’s goal along with evangelism and bringing glory to God. To love and to obey are one in the same.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed,
The message this week convicted me so much…as some of you know from seeing me cry! That was embarassing. But he talked about how my parents are my most important relationship…and I knew they weren’t to me. This verse tells me that they are put there in authority over me because God wanted them there! I know his plan for me is way bigger than my own plan for me, and I need to keep that in mind whenever my parents want me to do something that I don’t want to do. I know they love me and want to keep me safe, and I need to praise God for the Chrsitian parents I have!
We need to be fearful and respecting of God no matter if we think it is wrong or right. He will punish us if we do something wrong and we need to realize that.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
I love how all of the commandments are summed up by love. When we truly love others, we won’t want to do harm to them, but to lift them up. Loving others is definitely easier said then done. I have definitely been convicted about being exclusive and not showing the same love to some that I do to others. I’m praying that I would be working on showing love more and not being exclusive. Christ has shown me the greatest love of all and since I’m claiming to be a disciple of him, I need to be walking the walk by showing loving everyone as well!!
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
this verse is so important. What am i doing when no one is watching??I need to be obeying Gods commands no matter what- and do it for the right reasons. I need to be sure im not obeying His commands to gain glory- but to bring glory to God!!I need to be bearing fruits and i need to be aware of my actions as they are important because non Christians will judge me and my walk with the Lord based off of how i act and if im not being a hypocrite.
Maranatha!
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This is a cool way to think of living for Christ. If you put on Christ literally then you wouldn’t sin because he’d be right there. Its like a nice shirt. You don’t want to eat a sloppy joe with the nicest shirt you have. But because Jesus is right there, literally, then we should always think of it this way. Lord, let me always remember that you are right there.
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
I really need to work on loving everybody, even the people that persecute me or just annoy me. I need to accept everyone as God’s creation and learn to let some things go. I am going to work on getting a tight bond with my brothers and sisters in Christ!
Way to go Dominic! I love the link to todays blog by Pastor Mike! Sweet!
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE! I sometimes forget how important it is to show God’s love to people through our actions. As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit inside of us and we are walking examples of what Christianity should look like. So when i come across any situation, I try to ask myself, WWJD (what would Jesus do)? The one who was full of love and compassion towards others. I pray that my responses always reflect his love and that I am never quick to anger. I don’t ever want to falsely represent who He is!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Excuse me for being cliche, but “all you need is love”!
Sometimes it’s really hard to love your neighbor as yourself…
But it most certainly can be done through the strength of God and through His love :)
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This verse makes me think of alot of “Christians”.
The lukewarm ones.
You can’t say you love God, then go do what the world deems as ok.
You have to live your life 100% for Christ.
There is no other way to Him, but through Him.
Most people claiming to be Christians sadly don’t know this.
It’s our job to tell them the information they need to gain eternal life.
Otherwise, they continue to lead worldly lives, yet claim to know and love God.
I have to say, I have some problems with being tempted to be a lukewarm Christian.
But somehow, through all His love and power, I have the strength to live my life as a total Christian.
I am not ashamed of my God and will proclaim His name on the highest mountain top if I have too!!
I will not be ashamed!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Out of all the fruits of the spirit, love is the most important. It’s important to love as Christ loves us, and not what the world defines as “love” (aka: sinful pleasures). I need to be kind to all those around me at school and always have a loving attitude because I know others are watching my actions as a Christian example. I do not want to be the one who gossips, but the one who stops the gossip. I do not want to be the one who joins in the crude jokes, but the one who disapproves of them and prays to God for sinners to realize their mistakes. Love is patient and kind, and I should also be loving to my family–my parents and sister. It’s easy for me to not always show my love to them because sometimes I lose my patience, yet I should be obedient to my authorities.
The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
(The night is gone), another day to live for the Lord! another day that that we get to live for him and eveangalize and bring him Glory in everything we do. So then let us cast off the works of darkness, lets evangalize and drive out evil spirits, and put on the armor of light. I love this, put on the armor of light! Live for the Lord in everything we do!
Good to see you on Sotd Skyler!
9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
It is so important for me and Sam to be clean and obey God which is going great because God is always there for us and He is number 1 in our life. murder is not acceptable. Stealing is such a sin and you shouldnt hang with anyone that does such. Love your enemies.
4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain.
that is exactly what Bobby was talking about, the fear of the Lord. I know I’ve talked about this too in the past BUT it is just so important! There are a lot of things to take from this chapter that’s fo sho! God has really opened my eyes, and I’m sure all of you guys’ eyes to what He wants us to do, our specific lesson. Just as we all have our specific gift, we also have our specific lessons that apply to us more than others because we struggle with different things differently…if that makes sense. XD I know I struggle with having my mind on a scary Jesus, I usually think of Him as a loving one…which He is BUT He looks different than what I imagine! He looks scary! Fall on my face, scary! I neeeeeed to remind myself of this so that IIII can do better in obeying Him in loving others, and obeying my authorities. :) I love SOTD.
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
I need to remember to love everyone around me. The message this weekend made me realize how far I’ve been slacking on loving my parents and obeying them. I need to work on showing more love to my parents like Christ commanded!!
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
This concept is a very hard and difficult thing for us to do. I mean if you give someone 10 dollars and you dont get that money back at all you are not gonna be happy. Its definitely not easy to let something go and not ask fro it back. Especially when the times are hard now with money and parents getting laid off. This is even more of a reason for us to do this now. So dont ask for things back.
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment
This reminds me that God has put me EXACTLY where he wants me and can use me to glorify him. God put me specifically in my family, in my school, in this church. I just pray that I take every opportunity God gives me so I can glorify Him completely through my life!
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
I need to remember this throughout the day with my teachers and especially with my parents. The people that i need to obey in my life, God has put there for reason, And because he did, i need to make sure that i am glorifying him by obeying them. Rebelling against these authorities is going against what God wants for us to do. This totally reminds me of pastor bobby’s sermon this weekend, what a great reminder for us to be obedient to God(:
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
The phrase “as in the daytime” reminds us that not only does God see our every move, but others see our behavior as well. We should always strive for holiness–not just out of obedience and reverence to God, but also because our conduct as Christians should stand apart from those who submit to the desires of the flesh. I would hope that all of us at TN could quickly say we don’t participate in orgies, drunkness, or sexual immorality, but I would imagine that we couldn’t as quickly say that we don’t ever fall into quarreling or jealousy. But notice that Paul lists quarreling and jealousy right alongside those other sins. Sin is sin, and we need to fight against all impulses of the flesh equally. When unbelievers see me fighting with friends or family or expressing jealousy for others it damages my ability to witness to them effectively. I pray that I will walk properly so that my life might be an act of worship that glorifies God and draws others to the Lord.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
I truly believe that this verse is a motto that everyone should live by. In life there are so many wrong things that many people choose to do to and say about one another because it might be the “easier” way. But in the long run, if we all learn to get along with each other…and LOVE one another, there would be no reason for feeling hurt. Not only does this verse say that nothing else is owed but to love each other, but if you can go above and beyond to always love, be kind, and help each other, our imperfect society would be one step closer to a happier place. Lets all love each other forever!<3
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. —These verses are so moitvating because I tells me that I need to wake up an smell the coffee! There should be no excuse as to why I’m not evangelizing or taking the time to show others who Christ is through my life! It has been over a year since I have become a Christian and I know that I can show more excitement and live like it was when I was born again. I should be growing closer to God everyday. As a Christian I supposed to be making a stronger relationship with the LORD and not growing apart because I am not getting excited about what God has done for me! My prayer is that I will be living like I did when I first was saved and that everyone will know that I am an unashamed follower of God! These verses also got me thinking how amazing it is that God not only chose me but he was working in my life and caused me to turn my life around before he came back and I actually have the opportunity to live my life for him and share it with others!! :D
MARANATHA!!
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
Though this verse is specifically talking about legal authority, I think it can also be applied to another authority that Pastor Bobby talked about this weekend – Parents. Though I am working very hard on it, I, for one need to seriously change the way I treat and interact with my parents. I need to be more appreciative, for one, and show this appreciation by serving them. I like Bobby said, I need to listen to everything they say – not just hearing it, but doing it. This verse says that their authority is instituted by God, so I know that what my parents have to say is important. I need to work very hard to make sure my parents and I ARE on the same team, all the time. I can only imagine how much easier life would be if we never disagreed about anything – so I am working really hard to make it that way!
MARANATHA!!!!!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Great Scripture!
No matter how much you love someone, if it’s love from G No matter how much you dislike someone, you still have to love them. That is God’s second greatest commandment!
Oops, hit the submit button to soon =/.
It’s love from God that there can never be enough! This is why we need to love God with all of our heart, mind, and soul! This is God’s first and greatest commandment!
Keep Bringing it Brother!!
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This verse sounded cool to me because it reminded me how we need to be preparing ourselves with spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-20). We need to be surrounding ourselves with godly people and God’s word so that when we are tempted, we can stand strong and persevere, looking to God for guidance. In the second part of the verse though (“and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”) this made me think how we should be planning our day on how we are going to serve God and others out of love and not ourselves or our flesh. I pray that I would give everything I have to serving the Lord daily and to make no provision for my flesh!
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
this verse can be important to everybody, we need to be living by gods commans 24 hours of the day!
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ
I cannot be similar to nonbelievers. I need to look different and act different. I can show that I have the Lord’s joy and love inside me. This alone will witness to other people. Tomorrow I want to be thinking of God throughout the day, so I can act like a Christian.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
one of the authorites that God has placed in my life is my parents. i need to continuealy see them as loving authorities that God has specificaly placed in my life for me to obey and learn from. and i need to be on the watch of the attitude that we are piers or that they are “parental units”. i pray God will help me in this every day
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
As a Christian, I need to be obedient to those whom God has appointed as my authorities on this Earth. If I am not obeying my authorities then I am showing disobedience to the Lord and will incur judgment as it says in this verse. Obeying my authorities can be hard, especially when they want me to do something I do not want to do or they tell me something I do not want to hear. I pray that I will not resist my authorities but that I would do as they ask as an act of obedience to the Lord.

sorry, my computer is freaking out, and entered that comment a second time:P
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Wow what an awesome verse! This verse means to me that I should not let one thing in this world come before God. When temptations arise i need to step aside and let God handle them. For no one will ever come between the love in which i share with Jesus Christ! :)
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Like a lot of people today, I found this verse really awesome! Jesus is. That should be enough for us to know that He comes before all else in this world. He needs to be number one in our life! Most of us know it but I know for me it is more difficult in certain times than in others. That should NOT change my “rankings” at all. Jesus should be my number one priority and thought in my life- everyday! Not when I feel like it or when I feel down or when I feel strong, no! He should be always and forever #1. I need to do HIS bidding, not my flesh’s. I need to be a loyal and faithful slave, always putting the Master first.
Maranatha!!!!!
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
This verse really sticks out to me because, especially lately, I have had trouble appreciating my parents and being happy about their instruction. What this verse tells me is that everyone of our leaders, ESPECIALLY OUR PARENTS, were put there by God, and because of this we need to respect them even more because they are being used by God in our lives.
God wants us to have love in are hearts for him and and our neighbors but we all need to obey the commandments that god has made for us to follow
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
Authorities= parents! This is something i need to be working on and I am so thankful for Pastor Bobby’s message on it! I need to submit to and respect my parents in ALL circumstances, even if I dont want to. They will lead me toward life, because they are raising me in the way God wants them too! Sometimes it might seem like they are just not letting me do things I wanna do or not letting me have any fun, but I know they are really trying to raise me to be a godly woman. God put them in my life (or rather put me in their lives) so that they could do this, and I need to respect them! By not respecting them, I am being disrespectful to God, and this is something i definitely do not want to do. Lord help me to be respectful and submissive to my parents because you have placed them as authority in my life, and it is the right thing to do!!!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
I think this is a spot on revision of the “golden rule” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” If “love does no wrong to a neighbor” then we should never judge, assume things about someone, or do anything(s) of the sorts towards them. I just thought this verse was really cool because it was a different way of saying the greatest commandent =]
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
When I read this, I immediately thought about how we have gotten into the normal ‘path’ for Christianity… We go to church, attend small groups and read our Bibles, if at all. We need to rise up and break this mold of the “average Christian” and become on fire for the Lords coming kingdom! WE need to be the ones spreading the gospel of Christ and making sure everyone knows about the coming judgment and make more disciples! The time is now to wake up O Sleepers and run to the battlefields fighting for the Lord!!!!
God has placed the rulers of this country over me. Yes, we have elections, etc. but it is God who raises leaders up and brings them down. God puts specific leaders in power for specific purposes. I’m reading through Isaiah in my quiet time and often God uses one nation to judge another nation and then a third nation to judge the one he used to judge the first! I need to submit myself to my government even if I don’t agree with them or don’t even like them. God put the rulers there and I need to respect and obey them
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires
MAKE WARR!! This was a very powerful verse that is so simple yet so hard to do. Just as the Lord commands us, don’t gratify the fleshes desires, but make war against sin. I pray that I would turn to the Lord for guidance in all areas of my life and that I would deny myself of all of my sinful desires and pursue holiness!!
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
When i read this verse it spoke to me about be nice to my enemies and treat they as i would like to be treated. also it is telling me that i should go out of my way everyday and do something nice to someone.
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
Authorities in our life are appointed by God. I hardly think of it that way. When I think Teacher, I don’t think appointed by God, but they are. Respect for authority has become something tough for Teenagers but, from the wise words of the Gatorade ad campaign, Just Do It! Just get over it, and do it. Pray about it, and do it.
3) For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is authority? Then do what is good and you will recieve his approval.
This is a very stand out verse because it reminds us to respect our authorities not because of “law” but because they have been sent here from god. This brings me back to Bobbys message about obeying our parents because it is the right thing to do and our parents are also our authorities so it applies in many ways. Mainly I like the end of this verse where it says to do what is good and you will get approval. Basically we are approved by doing what is right so the only thing that holds us back is the evil in the world so let’s keep strong faith and gain approval =]
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
THis is an awsome thing to think of!!! Like literally putting on Jesus Christ all the time!!! We need to be making sure that we are living lives like we are with Jesus Christ, how differently would we be living our lives if He was right there next to us. We would be living our lives like later part of the verse said. We would be letting no part of our flesh be tearing us away from Christ and not be gratifying the desires of the sinful nature!!! So let us live like we are literaly right next to Christ this week!!!
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Recently, going through the “one another” chapter in partners, all of the one anothers could have fallen under “love one another.” This verse reminds me of that. I need to work on loving my family in Christ in practical ways like I said yesterday. Love is an action and I want to be loving others in ways they could use it, like encouraging them or just praying for them!
“14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”
This verse is awesome! I need to put on Jesus Christ, be like him in all things (or at least strive to), and allow no foothold for my flesh to take hold of and “gratify its desires”. “Putting on Jesus Christ” will bring about more love for one another, more agape love, the sacrificial love that Christ displayed for us. This week I’m going to work on loving one another even more than I love myself!
Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read…
I liked the end of the chapter when Paul was telling us not to gratify the desires of our hearts but to put on Jesus Christ. I love how he says, “make no provision for the flesh”. This means we are the starve our old self and keep feeding growing our new nature. I pray that God would give me the strength to kill sin so that it does not grow, but that my new nature will grow and be fruitful for the Lord.
Wow, this chapter really reminds me of the fear I nee to have towards the Lord! Our God is so mighty and powerful and has His rules…. rules that we all need to follow…. One day we are all going to stand before the Lord, accountable for our sin… It’s such a powerful and scary thought! Its not worth it to disobey our God to fulfill our flesh’s desires for that short moment, because the end result is going to be way worse when we are standing before the Lord… Easier said than done, I know but the last verse sayd it so clear… That we must clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ! I need to continue to strive to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and resemble Him in EVERYTHING I do!! (: I’m so thankful for the Word to remind us and to teach us these concepts to live a Godly life!!!! (:
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This chapter ends with a bang! In light of the fact that Christ is returning, I should be “putting on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Instead of pursuing my fleshly desires, I should be seeking Christ – to know him and to love him more. In order to do this I must “make no provision” for the flesh. There should be no place in my mind or my heart where my fleshly desires find any welcome. Any sinful thought or temptation must be thrown out as I pursue Christ! This is a challenging verse! Thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ who gives us the strength to do this, and thank God that Christ is worth it!
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Love is so important to God and he puts it above all of the other commandments and it totallt sums them all up. if we were loving others we would not be talking behind there back or being angry with them or whatever and it woudl solve all these problems. i am going to focus on loving others around me and substituting evil things for love
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
This verse totally stood out to me from the 2010 Prophecy Conference! Mark Hitchcock was talking about the end of the world and the rapture and one of his excellent points was that the Rapture could happen at any point in time! All of the prophecies leading up to the Rapture have been fulfilled and there is nothing holding God back! In God’s perfect timing (which we can’t predict) he will take us all up with him at the Judgement Seat of Christ. Because we have no idea of when it will happen, we need to live as if it could happen NOW. We have to make sure to leave nothing undone. Tie up all your loose ends! It is one of my goals to serve God in the immediate future so that if he came for us tomorrow, I’d be striving for perfection! Pray with me that Jesus comes for us soon! Maranatha!!!
The first part seems to tell us to obey our rulers, because they were appointed to us by God, and would explain why we as Christians should abide by law.
“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires”
Don’t fall into the deception of the world. Instead, put on Christ, so that all of your needs will be fulfilled and you will not succumb to sin.
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
this is a great verse. It shows me that all leaders are from God and he has them there for things. I need to respect the people that have authorities over me like my parents, teachers, president, and coches.
9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
I like this verse because it makes everything seem very simple, the way it is supposed to be. If you love your neighbor, you won’t do any of those things God commands us not to do! I wouldn’t steal from someone I love, kill them, or anything like that! There is really only that one commandment because the others are all elaborating on it.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Sometimes I feel like this should not even be a command!!!! How bad has our world come to when we have to be reminded to love one another!!!!! We should be overflowing with love and selflessness for everybody, but that is not the case in the sinful world we live in today!!!!! Jesus Christ set the bar at unreachable of how much he loves us by dying on the cross for all the sins that he didnt even committ!!!!!
I do not thank God nearly enough for how much grace and love he pours out on me each and every day of my life!!!!!
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
I need to be continually putting on the characters of Jesus Christ and be walking in daily fellowship. As part of following Christ’s example, I make “no provision for the flesh.” There’s no flesh allowed! I can’t put on most of the characteristics of Jesus Christ, but also keep on a few selfish tendency. As I am called in this verse to make no provision for the flesh, I need to continually examine myself, making sure that all of my flesh has been put off and I am not longer living for my selfish desires!
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment
This reminds me of the sermon this weekend and how my relationship with my parents is my first relationship and should be my closed relationship. I need to be like the Lord was with his parents, i will be submissive to my parents and obey them and not only hear them but listen to them and take it to heart! I cannot resist the authorities God has given me…those who do resist and disobey their authorities will incur judgement from God and that is the last thing i want! I am not going to be like very other teenager out there and go against my parents, i am going to be submissive to them and love them and make our relationship stronger than it has even been before! (:
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
I can never forget to love my neighbor! Not only must i love them, but i need to love them as myself and love them as Jesus would! That is huge and i need to be showing love Him. When i get in a fight with my brother or get really angry and upset with a friend, i must remember to show love to them because love does no wrong to a neighbor! And by showing love, i am fulfilling the law.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
I love this verse. Salvation is closer to us every single day, so why should I not get more excited every single day? I need to get pumped about my salvation in Jesus Christ and the fact that i will be with Him soon and i need to hold onto that excitement!!
I cannot wait till Heaven(:
Please pray for finals this week! I will be praying for everyone. Good luck!
What an awesome chapter! Short but great.
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Paul doesn’t say anything about what you might think of the ruler in office at the time. In fact, I read that when Paul wrote Romans, the Caesar at the time was Nero, not the most friendly guy towards Christians. He persecuted and killed them ruthlessly, yet here we as Christians are instructed to submit to the government. Regardless, we are to submit to and respect the civil law (unless they clearly tell us to do something God tells us not to do, I think).
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
As Jesus said, the whole Law is summed up in one word: Love. First God, then your neighbor. Paul is simply reiterating that command. And how important it is for us as Christians! Jesus said that people will know we are His disciples if we love one another. God, please give me that love for others so that you may be glorified.
Romans 13
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
This past weekend was very powerful. To see so many students with their parents was quite an awesome display of God’s power. One of the most fatal errors that young people make is that they think that they are being held down by their parents governing. Only when you get older and go out on your own do you realize that you are always under governing authorities. The fifth of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:12 we have the only commandment with a direct promise from God.
Exodus 20:12 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
If we are obedient to our parents who God has purposefully put as authorities over us than our days will be long and in Eph 6:3 we read that our life may go well with you and live a full life. God promises us a good life if we honor our father and mother.
Ephesians 6:3 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”.
In verse 2 we see what God promises for those who do not follow His command. Those who are disobedient and resist the authority sent from God will store up for themselves the wrath of God on judgment day. I pray that our students in True North will not fall for the allusions that the world gives that parents are against their son or daughter and oppress them for no reason. The plain truth is that you will never have a bigger allied in your whole life greater than the one you have at home with your parents. I also pray that relationships between parents and students would be repaired so they can start to build each other up.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
I don’t ever want to fall into the deception that some sin in my life is acceptable. Daily I need to be putting off my sin, confessing it to the Lord and giving practical thought to putting on Christ in his attitudes and obeying him in all righteousness. Something I’ve been doing is writing down the sin I’m confessing each day in my prayer journal and immediately taking time to look up a verse that helps me know what I need to do to resist the temptation to that sin and writing it down right next to the sin I confessed and also confessing my sin to someone else for accountability and prayer. I’m so thankful that God gives us the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin and also work through us to resist sin and follow Christ.
I read . . .
Romans 13 . . .
“2. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”
God has ordained for me to have parents. Ordained meaning, picked out and planned for me to have the parents that I have. Therefore, if God has ordained the parents that I have, then I shall try my absolute hardest to listen and OBEY what they say.
“7.Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”
I know it may seem hard at times to respect one’s older siblings. Yes, maybe when we’ve just ended an argument, it seems next to impossible to show respect then. However, this verse says just that, “. . . respect to whom respect is owed.” My older sister deserves the respect that I have for her. I look up to her, and am in awe at how mature she’s gotten. (spiritually and just through out life.) She has matured very much in her Walk, and I’m inspired by her. She absolutely LOVES reading the Word and continues to “highlight” her fav. verses. Driving herself to work, going to college, it’s unbelieveable how much time flies. But NOW, is the time I should be respecting her. Same goes for my parents. Of course when I was younger & they would be talking, I wouldn’t get half of the things they’d say. (both spiritually and also when they would just talk) But now, I understand a whole great deal more, and am glad of that also. I’m not sitting there like a dumb lost sheep. (when I wasn’t saved) Now I know what they are saying and add in things also. I need to work more on HONORING them and showing them repsect and that I care for ALL they do for me. (not saying though that I completely could care less of what they do. But there’s always room for improvement)
“10. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”
Heres an analogy : Lets say I decided to give my neighbor a plate of cookies. What would he/she do in response? A : throw the plate of cookies on the ground, throw a fit, and stomp their feet on the ground in refusal? or B : say “thank you” for the cookies and accept them gladly? I’m feelin’ the correct answers “B.” Giving cookies and showing love to a neighbor wouldn’t do them any harm. Why? Because showing love to other people and neighbors is fulfilling God’s law.
“12.The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
“14. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”
I choose both of these verses because I thought that they both made an excellent point. By putting on the armor of God, I shall cast off any darkness that the world feels like throwing at me. By putting on this armor, these verses say, I AM TO BE THE LIGHT IN THE DARK WORLD. I shall flee from the worldly temptation, and as a result, I fulfill the desires of my Father and NOT of flesh.
There were alot of verses I just HAD to comment on. =/
