The Scroll and the Lamb
5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”
11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” 14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped. (ESV)

10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.” good verse.
I love verse 9 & 10……when i read this i just thought how everyone knew that they where not worthy of God…..that noone is worthy of God
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
Although many are against Jesus on this earth, one day, and I look forward to that day, when everyone knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord God.
Worship at church, although probably one of my favorite times of the week, will be nothing compared to seeing our Savior in Heaven face-to-face in all His splendor. I’m excited!
Maranatha!
8… fell down before the Lamb
14… fell down and worshiped
In heaven we will go facedown in worship before Jesus Christ, because He IS worthy of our praise. Today a lot of people think of Jesus Christ being our pal, which in a sense is true (John 15:15). But many people today treat Jesus like He is any other friend. They disrespect His Name, and don’t obey His commands, which means that they really aren’t saved and aren’t really friends of God. This verse has reminded me that Jesus is my LORD, and when I see Him I will face down at His face and worship Him. I need to use this picture that Revelation has been giving me and worship Him through my lifestyle! Rather than just “pallin” around with Jesus like He was just another friend, I need to be obeying His commands and doing His will. It is an awesome thing to be Jesus’ friend, but I also need to recognize that He is a holy God and that He calls the shots in my life, and that one day I will be singing with the angels and the elders around the throne!
Awesome comment Cameron!
Revelation5:9 And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
We are not to do what only God is worthy to do. The thing that comes to mind for me is judging others. God is to judge others and I should never judge someone for their actions or personality, because God is worthy of being the ultimate Judge. He looks at the heart and judges our sinful selfs. God was only worthy to open the scroll with the seven seals because no one else was fit to do it. He was slain for our ransom, crushed for our iniquities. Jesus Christ’s death is so phenomenal… that God turned His back on His son, poured out all of His wrath on Him… just to save people who are disobedient sinners. God is so good and worthy of so many things!!!
Maranatha!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
I loved this verse because it reminded me of how one day every knee will bow. Its so cool to think that everyone; whether they be non-christians or christians, will all know Jesus is King and worship Him. Especially since i know so many people who don`t believe in God. One day they will believe!!! And for us christians, will live with God for eternity. Which is crazy to think; i mean forever!!!! :D
11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
Well, Pastor Bobby…not only is the day coming when a thousand voices will sing our Great Redeemer’s praise, but we have a promise from God that myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands will be praising the Lord Jesus Christ. Like you, I’m very much sweetly anticipating this, and in the meantime, I’m keepin’ on with the singing in my heart, and sharing the song He’s given me in the concert of this lifetime…
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
This verse got me excited about the day when I am in heaven! Right now on earth Christians are in the minority. Even at church not everyone there is worshipping Jesus with their whole heart. But the scene described in verse 13 is one where everything in heaven, on earth, and in hell will worship Jesus the way that He deserves. It reminds me of Philippians 2:10-11:
So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
I look forward to that day, when my precious Lord and Savior, Jesus, is finally given the praise, glory and honor that He has been due all along!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
One thing that I’m really looking forward to is THIS day when I am in Heaven. This verse says that every creature in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and in the sea, and ALL that is in them will say…etc…so, the Christians in heaven…those still on earth, those in Hell, those in the sea, and everything that is in them. They will praise God with their whole heart. Pastor Bobby talked on Revival Winter about how we need to make sure that our heart is not divided. That God has every part of it. And looking at this verse, when we will give everything to Him in praise..man I can’t wait for that day. Someday, we will be able to praise God with our whole heart, everything we have in us, and He will receive what He is due.
ELLO… I read
I like verse 7,”And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne.”
I like this verse because it talks about JESUS being the only one who is worth to take the scroll. JESUS is the only one who can take it because what HE has done for us HE is compassionate loving and gave HIS life for a people who’s majority hated HIM. When we were still HIS enemies HE died for us. I need to make sure and pray that I remember everything about JESUS because if my mind is always focused on HIM then I will more than likely sin less because I am thinking of JESUS.

9 And they sang a new song, saying,

Praise Jesus! He is worthy. I am curious as to what the scroll is though, does anyone know? Or is it something we will find out when it actually happens?
My study Bible says it is the title deed to the earth, Jesus alone is worthy and strong enough to open it because He alone has redeemed mankind! I also think it is because He created the earth, but that is just me :)
My mom said that Revelation can be interpreted many many MANY different ways and that there isn’t really a “right” answer. So whatever you think it symbolizes probably
Hey Elizabeth T! Thanks so much for all of your comments on here! Though Revelation is symbolic and can be confusing, there can only be one interpretation of what a passage is saying. Only one interpretation can be right in that it is what the author was actually saying. As we continue reading through Revelation we will find out more about the scroll! Keep those comments coming!
That’s so true! Thank you : ). It’s hard sometimes to understand it’s real meaning sometimes…thanks for putting your sermons on iTunes by the way! They’re very helpful, I listen to them often
And the elders fell down…
No high fives here: reverent fear of the Almighty Savior. A position to start from today. Please come soon!
8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
Wow this encourages me to pray to God more. One day my prayers will be used as incense to glorify and please my God and Savior JESUS CHRIST!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
I love the idea of all of creation giving praise to Jesus Christ one day for what He has done. It is going to be awesome to hear and see whales, mountains, trees, lions, stars, sharks, bears, spiders, Atheists, Muslims, Postmodernists, Satanists, Hindus, and Bhudists all praise Jesus Christ for His loving sacrifice that has redeemed man kind from sin and death. Our God is the Ruler of All!
why aren’t you here at Master’s right now?!
haha jk. God bless!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
i love this imagry in this verse. EVERY CREATURE in Heaven and earth praising God. Wow :)
This whole passage simply leaves me in complete AWE of our sovereign God! Looking back to passages like Isaiah 6, I can see why Isaiah is simply AFRAID in the presence of a holy, perfect God. It’s hard for me to imagine being fearful & excited at the same time, but I suppose one of the the closest pictures we have in non-Biblical sources is characters’ responses to Aslan in Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles. He’s not a “tame” God, but He is GOOD, and that’s where I place my hope & confidence through his Son.
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
We really like this verse because it reminds us of how Jesus is sovereign over everything being the ultimate sacrifice who didn’t deserve to die. And He is worthy of our praise. We listened to John MacArthur speak today in chapel about ways to glorify the Lord and He said one of them was to worship the Lord with a whole heart devoted to the gospel. He is more than worthy of our praise and we pray to strive to glorify Him in everything we do. :)
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
It is so fitting that every creature everywhere worship God because he alone is worthy and the Creator of all things! This chapter makes me excited to think about how one day everyone and everything will acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord! So many people are running around today doing what they want, busy with their lives not thinking about God and the mind-boggling gift of forgiveness in Jesus. Many people don’t even know or understand that this is reality. They are ignorant of the gospel living for their own honor and their own glory, but they need to hear and respond and I need to be ready at any moment to talk to them! I just put some Eggstraveganza flyers in my pocket and am praying right now that God would give me some people to give them to and talk to about Easter when I take my kids to the park later this afternoon.
That’s awesome you were actually able to do this! Let’s all represent as Easter approaches!
14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped
This chapter is so glorious! That is so awesome that so many living things are so in awe of God, they praise Him! I loved verse 14 because it captures the essnece of this chapter, and it is such a great response to have! The elders were so in awe that they fell down! That is the attitude I need to have toward praising God. I need to be totally submissive, and give all of my attention to Him!He really does deserve all of my attention and praise!!
2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it
I like how humble we should be in this verse
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
This is an awesome verse. One day, everyone will see the Lord and be judged for their actions. I pray that knowing this, we all would go and evangelize more fervently than ever before. I pray that the Lord would give us boldness and that we would not start arguments in our evangelism with others but rather show them how awesome God is and help them.
P.S: BIG EVANGELISM OPPORTUNITY THIS SATURDAY
DOUBLE IT UPPPP!!!!!!!
5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
The Lion of Judah has conquered! Jesus was victorious over death, and because of that we need “weep no more”! Because of the cross, because Jesus paid it all for MY sin, I can have eternal life! I can rest assured in the work of Christ alone. This reminds me of some lyrics: “This is all my hope and peace / Nothing but the blood of Jesus / This is all my righteousness / Nothing but the blood of Jesus”
A great song. And I don’t think I could put it any better, that I have absolutely no hope and no peace… except in the work of Jesus Christ. . . that I am completely devoid of righteousness; I have none… except in Jesus Christ! In Him alone is my hope found, my peace, and my righteousness. Without Jesus, I would be hopeless, restless, and without righteousness. He IS worthy to receive all glory, all honor, and all praise, and I want my life to be all about praising and loving Him. God, please let this be a reality!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
One day every living thing will proclaim that Christ is LORD and there will be an endless time of rejoicing and worshiping Him. I am so greatful to God that He has chosen me as one of His people and I should prove it to Him by telling others about His wonders. I need to treat God’s word as mightier than any information I might know. Instead of being afraid to tell even my best friends, I should prove that I care for them by telling them about Him.
This scroll is so powerful and so important that no one can open it. Hmm, what could it be? Well, whatever it is, it seems that Jesus is the ONLY one worthy of opening it! He’s worthy of everything, so it makes sense that He should get to open the scroll. But why is He ultimately worthy? “for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God”. Its because He humbled himself to the point of being a man, was mocked, flogged, spit on, cursed, and ultimately suffocated to death so that I didn’t have to take that punishment! He made us a “priestly kingdom,” even though our/my sins caused Him to suffer! He is completely worthy of my praise, and I need to keep that fresh in my memory (especially with Easter coming up).
I pray for people who have strayed from God’s word, that through my actions, they will be compelled to come back to the church.
I read…
When we get glimpses of Heaven in Revelation it is always full of worship. I cannot wait for these times of worship. The worship there will be so much better because everyone will be Christians, and also no one will care about what people are doing, it will just be between them and God. MARANATHA!
11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” 13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
This is so awesome, and it something that keeps getting repeated in revelation. All the creatures in heaven and in the world, praising the LORD almighty! I am so excited for the day when I will join this incredible worship service for eternity up in heaven. I want to praise the Lord in everything I do now while I am still here on earth too, that he might be glorified even more!
9 And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
Everyone in heaven will understand exactly why we are there: Jesus. It is only because he died for our sin that we can be considered righteous to be in God’s presence. I am so thankful to Jesus for dying for me and look forward to Good Friday one week from today.
See you all at True North this weekend! Don’t forget you can join a street team and spread the word about Easter at the Bren on Saturday or Sunday after the service.
One of the things I’m most excited about heaven is that there are going to be people from all over the world there! I love worshipping with people from other countries in different languages because I feel like it is a little slice of heaven. God does not just choose one nationality. He has chosen people from all over the world! We will all be gathered together and we will be worshipping the same God! That gets me so excited! I can’t wait for that day!!! Maranatha!!!!
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive
power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
Again today I’m convicted of my lowly view of my Savior, he is worthy! Worthy to receive all my honor and glory! I need to live each day completely for his glory.
3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
There is no one worthy like Jesus! While I too often feel like weeping at the state of our fallen world and my own failures in trying to live a holy life that pleases God, I am comforted when I truly reflect on the incomparable gift of Jesus’ death and resurrection. I’m grateful that our God is merciful and loving and gave us His only son so that we might live eternally even though we don’t deserve it at all.
I’m praying that God will use TN and Compass to spread the gospel and help bring others to Christ this Easter.
I have found everything in Revelations to be very interesting!!!!! I am so glad to be reading this each day on SOTD!!!! I have learned a lot about Heaven!!! And reading about Heaven brings me JOY!!! I cannot wait for what tomorrows chapter brings!!!!
MARANATHA
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
I cannot wait to be in the presence of the Lord and sing praise to him! This chapter is an amazing depiction of worshiping Jesus Christ and I am so excited to be a part of it in heaven..
4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.
As Easter approaches, it is the perfect opportunity to see our sin for what it truly is. It must have been truly staggering for John to be hit with the realization that there was not a single person who had ever lived who could compare with the Lamb, the Lord Jesus Christ. When I stop to consider this, and then to think about the amazing love and sacrifice it would take for a perfect and exalted God to step down from His throne in heaven, become one of His creations, live in humility, and die the death that He did, facing the wrath of a just Father because of my sin – this should make me more grateful than ever, and all the more eager to tell everyone I know about my Savior!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
The reaction on SOTD today alone to this verse shows how powerful God’s word is. This verse in particular reminded me of the song “Oh for a Thousand Tongues”. Every time we sing that song at TN, I have a hard time picturing what 1,000 students singing that would look like. I always dream of a day when TN gets so large that we have to find a bigger building. Our high school ministry is growing, and someday it will be 4 times its size. However, if everyone brought just 1 person with them every weekend, we would grow intensely fast and we would soon have 1,000 people singing Oh for a Thousand Tongues. I would love to see that happen!! But what’s even better is that when we are in heaven, there will be thousands upon thousands of people worshipping God facedown at the top of their lungs. No matter how awesome and large our high school ministry gets, its incomparable to the sheer size and infinitely awesome worship session that will occur in heaven. I can’t wait for that day!! But, in the mean time, lets make disciples and shoot for 1,000 people at TN!!!!
When it said that every creature will fall down it kind if reminds me of how when Jesus reuturns that everyone wil fall down and every tongue will confess. Waitingvin his day of arrival is exciting when you think about it. Easter at the Bren is almost here woooohhhhkohooooo
This part is so awesome because I feel like it reminds me of my place. Sometimes, I try to let my pride get in the way and tell me that I am so cool or something. However, only Jesus is worthy. Occasionally, I need to be “put in my place” and this is one of the passages that does that. It’s incredible to be reminded of Jesus’ power and worthiness. One thing that struck me about this passage was that it doesn’t just say that Jesus opened the scroll and its seven seals. It first emphasizes the fact that nobody else was able to open the scroll. Then, once we have established that we are not worthy, Jesus comes and opens the scroll and seven seals. It’s so exciting that Jesus has conquered death forever. The final victory has yet to come, but it will be soon. I need to get my friends who are nonChristians ready.
I am so looking forward to the day when I will be with my Savior for eternity and be able to worship Him continually! I want my life even here on this earth to be all about praising Him. Praise and glory is the one thing that I can actually give God and the thing that He completely deserves. MARANATHA!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
Revelation has really been getting me excited for the day in which I will go to Heaven. This verse here just goes to show us how worthy of our praise God is. Every single thing will one day proclaim His name wether they beleive it or not. I cant wait for the day that God will get all the praise that He deserves.
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
My God is so awesome. Jesus is the all-powerful God, but He humbled himself and died so that I could be saved. I need to remember how great Jesus’ sacrifice was for me so that I will be always saying how worthy He is to receive power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory and blessing. LORD, please help me to think about what you have done for me everyday so that I would be motivated to give you glory in all things.
This really reminds me of how Christ is the only one worthy of eternal glory and praise and to be called perfect! He can do anything and we are just his unworthy servants, trying to serve him faithfuly, and even with that we need his help! Without Christ in my life i would get no where and it would be a spriraling black pit, I am so thankful to be blessed by him and that i can have some one who can do things so amazing as this love me so much!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
This verse is really awe inspiring. Think about that: ALL of God’s creation proclaiming His glory! Christ is so magnificent and worthy of all our praise, and yet I feel like what I give back to Him is so inadequate and unworthy of His glory. It’s truly awesome to have a God willing to send His only son to die on a cross and take the punishment for all our sins on His shoulders so that we could be with Him forever…
I’ve had a rough night defending the faith… but I know that even though it may be tough, in the end, Christ will get the glory!!!! MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” 14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
Our God is so great and powerful!
This whole chapter was just like, whoa.
Our God, the slain lamb, can render all this respect.
The respect He so rightly deserves and should be given every single day by everyone, but sadly isn’t.
However, as prophesied, every creature praised His name and gave Him His praise and honor.
The 24 elders, you can infer they were VERY important, seeing as though there were only 24 of them, and they were sitting in the presence of God, fell face first to the floor to praise Him.
That’s some pretty powerful stuff.
If these men can give their all while worshiping Him, shouldn’t we?
If we’re not giving praising God our absolute everything, then maybe you’re not giving God your all.
I pray that I will worship Him with everything I do exponentially more than I am now and be on the floor praising His name every single day.
I pray for strength to be the most humble and best servant I can possibly be while serving Him so that on that day when He returns, I can be confident I gave Him all that I had and can worship Him with the elders, face down, shouting His name.
This whole chapter speaks of Christ’s amazing glory and power. He is the only one who is able to take the scroll and open it. He is the only one who could pay the penalty for our sins and wash us white as snow. He is the only one who was able to be ransomed to pay our debt. And for that, He should be praised forever and ever and ever!
Revelation 5
8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
I love these two verses where we see the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders worshiping Christ. The creatures and the elders are facedown before Christ praising Him for His Gospel. Christ who brings salvation thru His death and resurrection is worthy of executing His Gospel. I look forward to the day that I am able to fall prostrate before my Lord and Savior worshiping Him for my salvation and the salvation His chosen. I pray that worship at True North will be more like the worship that we see here in Revelation. We don’t have to wait until we are in heaven to worship our Lord for His Gospel of salvation.
Revelation 14:6-7 6 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7 And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
