Psalm 145-146

Psalms 145-146

Great Is the Lord

A Song of Praise. Of David.

145:1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.

10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,
12 to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

[The Lord is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.]
14 The Lord upholds all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand;
you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he also hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord preserves all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

Put Not Your Trust in Princes

146:1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the sojourners;
he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever,
your God, O Zion, to all generations.
Praise the Lord! (ESV)

PS 145:18-20 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

Our faithful God has two promises: salvation and blessing for those who call on Him in repentance and trust and destruction for everyone else. Wide is the path that leads to destruction and narrow is the path to salvation. Which one do you choose?

Lord, please come soon and inspire me and the others You’ve called to share the biblical gospel with everyone in our schools, families, neighborhoods and workplaces that needs to hear Your truth…

  2. Stacy Perkins says:

18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

SO many people call out to the Lord. And almost always in OUR times of need. When we’ve gone as far as we can go, until we’re STUCK or in a jam. And how many of us have dared to make the lame promise, “Oh, MAN, God, if You help me out with this, I will NEVER do that AGAIN!” IF?! Wow, are we AUDACIOUS, those of us who have taken on this kind of angle toward our very patient and loving God.

But those of us who have called on Him in TRUTH, we know the difference between just CALLING on Him, and calling on Him in TRUTH. We know that there is no promise we can make to God that we can keep outside of His Holy Spirit living within us. And even then, we are still inclined to sin. God doesn’t say, “OOH! She’s laying THAT negotiation down–SHE must be SERIOUS! OK, I’ll help her out this time…” We are kinda ridiculous in our projections of God.

All He wants is for us to call on Him in TRUTH. To be foorthright with ALL of it. Let nothing remain in the shadows, and make ourselves vulnerable and exposed before Him. THEN He can go to work inside of us. This is my heartfelt desire for all of us TN’ers…

Happy Saturday, people. Tonight is Fall Fest and we gain an hour of sleep tonight :)

  3. Beth Lauder says:

4 One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.

As I read this awesome psalm, Psalm 145, full of amazing truth of how amazing God is, this verse stood out to me. Now that I am a mom, I know that it is my responsibility to teach Dani about who God is and all that He has done. This psalm is chock full of wonderful truth describing God, “great,” “glorious,” “righteous,” “compassionate,” “awesome,” and “loving.” I must be teaching Dani these things about the Lord on a daily basis. By doing so I am teaching her to have a high view of God, which is crucial in one day her responding rightly to the gospel. As I read this psalm I was reminded about how many different things I have to praise God for and how I should respond with thanksgiving to Him by telling my daughter and others about how great He is.

  4. Dan Lauder says:

1 Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

I sometimes need to remind myself to redirect my praise to God. I may be tempted to put my trust in other things and live my life for them. I may become enamored with things, activities, or people. However, only God is worthy of the #1 place in my heart. He is the one my soul should be praising. Praise the LORD, O my soul!

  5. Mike says:

21 My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

The theme of praising God is presented over and over throughout the psalms, and multiple times within each psalm. But instead of being something repetitive or monotonous, it should be either deeply convicting or extremely encouraging to us. Our entire lives should be about praising our great and awesome God; every time I read verses like this, it should be a motivation to me to glorify Him. Sadly, I don’t always read these verses with such enthusiasm, but I need to. A “Christian” who does not make praising God with his words and lifestyle a priority is not a true Christian at all. God is above everyone and everything else in the universe – He created the universe – and I need to be zealous for bringing HIm praise as long as He gives me breath with which to praise Him.

  6. Spencer Camp says:

Psalm 145:2 “Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.”

    24/7 Worship…

Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”

To worship God. The Lord is completely worthy and deserving of my praise—everyday.
    Why?

His mercy: No longer will I receive what I deserve—hell. In fact Jesus received my punishment for me on the cross!
His grace: God has given me, a sinner, the gift of eternal life, in Christ Jesus. Whoa!

I could spend all of eternity writing God’s blessings and still would not even put a dent in the list.

    His Love endures forever!

See everyone @ Fall Fest today!

  7. Brooke Miller says:

3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.

Worldy things on earth do not matter and cannot save you! In the end, all those fleshly desires will be gone, and the only thing that will matter is if you have repented and put your faith in Christ. The only thing that satisfies and gives life is Jesus Christ and he is the only way of salvation!!!! At my school, this is something that people need to know. That good works, or things of this world truly do not matter! Judgement will be coming and they need to repent! I want to take every opportunity to talk to people since this is my last year in high school!

  8. Ben Blakey says:

Spence! 24/7 worship is what stuck out to me as well! If you put together the second verse of each of these Psalms, you get the idea that God’s people need to be praising God every day for as long as they live. That means there is no day when they don’t praise God and there is no time in their life when they stop this everyday praise. This was an encouragement to me this morning to be joyfully worshiping the Lord in my heart!

And I love the flip side of this idea of 24/7 praise. We should always be praising because God is always faithful! God is “the LORD, who remains faithful forever.” (Psalm 146:6)

See everyone at Fall Fest tonight! Revival Band is playing at 8!

  9. Jasmine Theophobe says:

6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.

I want to tell everyone I know about how awesome God is and all the things He has done to change my life. He saved me from so many countless things like my sin, hell, myself that I will proclaim how the gospel has changed my life.

19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

I like how this has to do with Bobby’s message last week! If we fear God and obey His commands, even if we do get made fun of or “persecuted” God hears our cries and saves us. He fulfills our desires if we fear Him!

excited and praying for fall fest!

  10. Murphy Danahy says:

4 One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.
5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.

I thought it was kind of funny that the writer chose this subject. It makes me think, did he know that he was doing the exact same thing for us? Proclaiming the greatness of the LORD to a generation long after his own? What will our legacy be?

  11. Allen McAnlis says:

21 My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

My internet is finally letting me on SOTD so it is a perfect time to say that I am striving to praise the LORD everywhere I go. I try and evangelize to people everywhere I am. I never want to stop praisin His name for who He is. He is unbelievably merciful and He deserves to be honored and praised forever. It should be unconditional that I praise His name and exalt Him above all other things.

  12. Jenna Perry says:

i love all of the verses! They are a great description of how great and mighty God is and how blessed we are to have him as our God.

8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
9 The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

I wish I had all these traits! He is a great role model for everyone obviously and it pushes me that much harder to try and be like Him. One thing I know I sometimes struggle with is getting angry quickly and to see this verse tell us God is slow to anger and to see myself want to be like Him motivates be to hold my anger and pray. Another thing to look at is how the LORD is good to all and everything he has made. I want to be fair and kind to everything and everyone around me and know it is God’s creation and to treat them as God would.
    Praying for Fall Fest!

  13. katie baxter says:

2 Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

love it! God deserves all of our praise, like verse 3 says we can’t even imagine how great he is. i need to make sure this is the attitude i have every day

  14. Marissa Ramirez says:

2 Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

This is something that I definatly need to work on. I know I have not been scripture of the day a lot and ned to start folowing the path of Jesus Christ. I know the things i do like read the bible and talk to people once in awhile is not enough for my God and I will be judge for that. So I will make it my goal to praise the LORD everyday and go up to someone and just have a conversation about Jesus and our Heavenly Father.

  15. Katie Slusher says:

3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

The Lord is most worthy of praise! Like Spencer said, 24/7 worship! I love how the rest of this chapter goes on to show examples of God’s greatness and why he deserves our praise. The Psalmist talks about his compassion, goodness, love, power, protection, and much more! Praise Him for he is most worthy. May the praises of the Lord never stop flowing from my life.

  16. Allie Moorefield(: says:

8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
Lately in small groups we have been talking about the 3 most popular sins of high schoolers-anger, lying, and cheating. I struggle with anger, therefore, this verse stood out to me. It says how God was slow to anger and instead of hatred he was rich in love! I need and desire to be like that! So that i dont get mad or frustrated or impatient and instead i can learn to love!

3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.
I also really like this verse. Why would we put our trust in people, idols, or “gods” who CANNOT save, Rather than putting ALL of our trust in the ONE who can save??? Usually when i am going through a struggle or a hard time i try to rely on myself and stay to myself to make it better when i should be putting ALL my trust in the Lord because He is the ONLY ONE who knows what is best for me and HE is the ONLY ONE who would be able to get me through those hard times and struggles. I am going to start trusting in the Lord with all my heart and try as hard as i can to be slow to anger and rich in love!
    God is so inspiring!
    Happy Halloween(:

  17. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.

This verse is a great reminder that I should be talking about all the awesome works that my Lord did. It make me think what am I talking about the most is it God or things that are pointless? I am going to start to look at what I am talking about and make sure that I tell people all that my Lord has done.

  18. christopheriksen says:

9 The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

I like this verse because it shows how we had no hope but God saved us. We were rejected like outcasts and we had no father to take care of us, and even though it was our rejection of God that brought us into punishment in the first place, He had mercy on us and saved us. In fact God is loving to all He created even though the world has rejected Him and doesn’t deserve anything but judgment. These psalms have convicted me because lately I haven’t been giving very much thought to how great is. But I need to be meditating on His glory everyday and constantly praise Him for it because He is the awesome and everlasting God who is so deserving of praise!

  19. AL∑C™ 2010 says:

6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.

Praise be to God for the life he has given me and for all the blessings I have!

  20. Josh Larson says:

1 Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
i need to work on praising God more often and with a focused heart.

  21. steffen eriksen says:

14 The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

Many people in this world are out there solely to glorify themselves. All they care about is lifting up themselves and making them look good in front of other people. Matthew 16:25 says, “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.” Searching for the “goods” of this life won’t get you anywhere. You may seem to be happy at them moment because you feel that you have it all, but in reality, treasures here on earth are only fading glory. Instead of seeking to lift oneself up, Christians should be looking to glorify God. Humans were created to glorify God, but given free will. Christians need to throw away what they want and seek to lose all of this world as they live for God. It is sad to see people claim to be Christians, yet they live fully for themselves. I need to be fully committed to living for Christ in this life, not striving to live for myself. I don’t want the praise of men, but I want to lose all I have for the sake of Christ! “I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him!”

THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO MADE IT HAPPEN, IT WAS AMAZING!

God bless, see everyone at Church tomorow! Yes, we get an extra hour of sleep. =)

  23. Sarah G. ecstatic from a fabulous time at Fall Fest!! says:

21 My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

PRAISE THE LORD!! Fall Fest was a huge success, and God and His people made it all happen, like Ariana said!! He deserves all praise!! I’ll be prayin’ that church membership will grow through that outreach, so that more can join us singing songs to Him!! :D

  24. Zach Hoffman says:

    Psalm 146
1 Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Every moment of every day we should be praising God. We are so unfathomably indebted to Him for our salvation that every day of our lives should be a celebration of the Lord.

End note: I stayed home today, but I heard Fall Fest was HUGE!!!!! 7,800 people!?!? Thanks to God for this AMAZING success!!!!!!

  25. jacksondahl says:

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.

The LORD is everlasting, and so is His love and faithfulness. As long as I keep my trust in Him, I can know that He will never forsake me because He is faithful to all His promises. I know that I will continue to mess up countless times, but I still need to strive for righteousness. If I do this, the LORD will forgive me, but I still will have to talk to God about every sin I have committed someday, so I should not settle for less than holiness. Praise the LORD, I can’t wait to spend eternity in is everlasting Kingdom!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!

  26. Meisha Preston says:

3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

God is worthy of all my praise. I will spend the rest of my life and all of eternity learning more and more about God and in a million years I will still have so much to learn about God. I cannot fathom his greatness! I’m looking forward to the day when I don’t have to “see as though in a mirror dimly” but I get to see God “face to face!” Lord Jesus come quickly!

  27. Tanner says:

ELLO… I read SRY I didn’t post for a while I was gone all weekend

I like verse 8,”The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.”

I like this verse because what it is saying the LORD is like. I’m not saying that you can just go out and test the LORD to see how long you can go unpunished I’m saying the GOD is setting an example for us and I need to follow this with much more effort. If we are children of GOD then we need to act like HIS children (HIM) we aren’t going to be perfect on this earth but we are supposed to try as hard as we can and give everything to act like the LORD. I have to do this and apply acting like the LORD as much as possible or because if I mess up people will think that CHRISTianity is just like you can stay the same and we are hypocrites.

  28. Lizzie McCoy says:

Pslam 146: 3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.

I need to always remember to put my trust in God for EVERYTHING! Not just with big things but also with little things. He will always be there for me no matter what. Man cant provide for me what God can.

  29. ELLA says:

3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.

This reminds me of the verse that says you can only have one master, money or God. I know that my trust needs to be in God and not anything else. :) He will never perish and will always be there. PRAISE the LORD.

  30. payton :D says:

    Awesome comment Spencer! :]

2 Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

I too really like this verse. I need to praise God every moment of the day, without fail. In these two chapters it talks about praising God. And why not? God is amazing and all powerful! He has given me soooo much, and I don’t need or deserve any of it. God is great and His love reaches beyond the skyes(think I spelled that wrong :/)! Glory be to God in the Highest!!!!!! :]

    ***Praise His name!!!***

  31. Jasmine and Vanessa says:

19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.
20 The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

How awesome to know that God promises to fulfill the desires of those who love and fear him because they will be walking in his word and will. We are so blessed to be his children and know that he will sustain us and lead us on this earth. We love that the Lord is watching over us always!

  32. Evan McKee says:

4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

This verse reminded me of how little what we do here on earth matters if it’s not done in preparation for our life in heaven. this is a good motivator to do something God wants instead of what you want because it makes you realize that what you want isn’t beneficial to you at all.

  33. Brett *2010* says:

Wow! What an encouraging couple of chapters!

9.) The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

This verse really stood out to me when I read it..the fact that the Lord has compassion on all of us, which led me to think of how loving and forgiving God is to remove our sins so that we can one day be with Him.

  34. 18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

Two awesome psalms today! These verses challenge me to pray because I want to be near the Lord and be obedient to him not just assuming he will give me what I want, but fearing him and always calling on him in good times and bad.

  35. Pastor Bobby says:

I am using my extra hour tonight to praise the Lord! And these two psalms are pumping me up!

Psalm 145:2 – Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.

I need to praise the Lord EVERY DAY! This needs to be a habit. I can’t take Halloween off. But daily I need to be thinking about who God is and what he has done for me…and letting him know how awesome he is for it!

Psalm 146:2 – I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

I need to praise the Lord AS LONG AS I LIVE! This means I can’t stop. I can’t get tired of it. And I need to have a longterm perspective that this is what I am going to do for the rest of my life!

Speaking of praise…I’m stoked for a special time of worship tomorrow at True North! See you at 11!

  36. Rebekah Foreman says:

18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

I pray that I am obedient to you of Lord as you are near God. Maranatha
