My Soul Thirsts for You

A Psalm of David.

143:1 Hear my prayer, O Lord;
give ear to my pleas for mercy!
In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!
Enter not into judgment with your servant,
for no one living is righteous before you.

For the enemy has pursued my soul;
he has crushed my life to the ground;
he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.
Therefore my spirit faints within me;
my heart within me is appalled.

I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all that you have done;
I ponder the work of your hands.
I stretch out my hands to you;
my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah

Answer me quickly, O Lord!
My spirit fails!
Hide not your face from me,
lest I be like those who go down to the pit.
Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,
for in you I trust.
Make me know the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.

Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord!
I have fled to you for refuge!
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God!
Let your good Spirit lead me
on level ground!

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life!
In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!
12 And in your steadfast love you will cut off my enemies,
and you will destroy all the adversaries of my soul,
for I am your servant.

My Rock and My Fortress

144:1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who trains my hands for war,
and my fingers for battle;
he is my steadfast love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield and he in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples under me.

O Lord, what is man that you regard him,
or the son of man that you think of him?
Man is like a breath;
his days are like a passing shadow.

Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!
Touch the mountains so that they smoke!
Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;
send out your arrows and rout them!
Stretch out your hand from on high;
rescue me and deliver me from the many waters,
from the hand of foreigners,
whose mouths speak lies
and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

I will sing a new song to you, O God;
upon a ten-stringed harp I will play to you,
10 who gives victory to kings,
who rescues David his servant from the cruel sword.
11 Rescue me and deliver me
from the hand of foreigners,
whose mouths speak lies
and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

12 May our sons in their youth
be like plants full grown,
our daughters like corner pillars
cut for the structure of a palace;
13 may our granaries be full,
providing all kinds of produce;
may our sheep bring forth thousands
and ten thousands in our fields;
14 may our cattle be heavy with young,
suffering no mishap or failure in bearing;
may there be no cry of distress in our streets!
15 Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall!
Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord! (ESV)

    1 Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.

    Normally when we praise God, it is for His love, His mercy, and other such attributes. Preparing us for battle usually isn’t high on that list. But it should be. Christ’s death on the cross has given us the ability to fight and achieve victory over sin in our lives. And He has given us His Word and His Spirit, which guide us and prepare us for every good work. So whenever we are faced with temptation, with the criticism or questions of nonbelievers, or with any sort of trial, we can have confidence that we are not alone, and that God has provided a way for us to succeed and bring Him glory. I need to make sure that I am taking advantage of the tools God has provided to equip me for such spiritual warfare, having a hunger for His word and a desire to be close to Him in prayer that is always driving me to take my spiritual growth to a higher level.

    10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

    This is the kind of prayer Christians should have. We need to ask God to show us our sins and pray for sanctification. We have to learn how to obey God’s will perfectly, and we need God to teach us, through the Holy Spirit. So, let’s pray that God will show us the correct way to live and keep us far away from sin.

    Thank You Lord for grace for the sinful man! David knows the place of honor and power of God, and he knows his own place of need for salvation and forgiveness. A great reminder of who God is and who we are! Thank You Lord for Your grace and mercy. Help me to share it today and please come soon!

    Outside of the power of the Holy Spirit, it IS our OWN spirits’ nature to grow faint and become dismayed. Life sucks so bad without Jesus Christ as Lord. Yah, there’re things we sacrifice when we surrender it all to Jesus. But the chains are LOOSED. The pain is temporary, and the perspective is eternal.

    Again, I’ll say it: the pain is temporary, and the perspective is eternal. Thank You, Lord…

    4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.

    When the creation of the world is written about, it says that the LORD made man out of the dust of the earth. He made Adam’s body with dust. And then he blew His breath into him and Adam was made. He was made alive by God breathing into him His breath of life. So, as the verse says, all we are is but a breath. We both have been made alive by breath, for it isn’t by our own power, and man is also like a breath, for a breath is just a brief moment’s respite. Our days are like a fleeting shadow, for the time we will live on this earth is very limited, and it can’t even be imagined compared to the immensity of living for all of eternity. This is but a temporary living place for us humans. Those that have been saved by God will live forever in heaven and dwell in the presence of the LORD and those who are dead in their sins will spent eternity being tortured in hell. I need to always keep in mind that this is not my true home on earth, that it will only last but a fleeting moment. I need to always stay future-focused as I eagerly await the day when my Savior will come to bring me home!

    3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him?

    I love the humility displayed in this verse! However, rather than having a humble”What is man?” attitude, I commonly have an attitude of entitlement. I think I deserve certain treatment and priveledges and I fail to remember what I truly deserve. The Holy Lord saw me in my sinfulness and rescued me from death. I was his enemy, and deserved an eternity in hell. I’m praising the Lord today for thinking of me; for rescuing me from what I deserve!

    This verse shows how low we are compared to God and no living human is even on the radar of being an equal to him. When we are being judged no one should even be granted the honor of standing before him. It’s a good reminder that we are all no where near how powerful and righteous God is.

    This is such a great verse! I want to wake up EVERY morning with the same attitude the psalmist has here. So my prayer today is that I would do just that.

    Like Steffen said, God made us humans by breathing into Adam. So literally we are like a breath, because that’s what made us alive. God made us out of dust, and like a fleeting shadow we’ll turn back to dust very soon. We don’t even live as long as the people in the Old Testament did, and God still considered them to have lived short lives like a fleeting breath. Compared to forever, 60-70 years living on earth is nothing. Earth isn’t my home, and i won’t be here for long. This is why i gotta take advaantadge of every oportunity to do what God wants me to!

    In this psalm Davis cries out to God in a time of great distress and he becomes aware of his own sins. Verse 6 stood out to me because here David shows his total dependance upon God. He is keenly aware that he is 100% reliant upon God to deliver Him from his enemies and his sins. I like the metaphor that relates David’s need for the Lord to parched land in need of water. Land without water can not survive or produce fertile crops. In the same way, as Christians we can not live godly, holy lives without total dependance upon God and following His Spirit. It is my prayer today that I would wake up every morning hungry and thirsty for God. That I would resolve to spend quality time in His Word, in prayer and in meditating on who He is and what He has done. By doing this my thirst for Him will be quenched and my life will be like fertile land that produces many crops.

    Mmmmhhhh…I like this comparison—like barren, dry land my soul thirsts for the Lord.

    This is a good thing…first thing in the morning…drinking the Word to quench my thirst. Frankly, I’m tired of drinking salt water. Its bitter and never satisfies. I want pure Fuji water bottled right from the source…

    I to cry out to my God, for in him I am filled. Daily I will drink of the everlasting water. Its truly sustains my soul. Keep me accountable :)

    “6. I spread out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.” Selah

    This verse totally painted a picture in my head of someone on their knees reaching their hands as far as they can to the heavens. That completely illustrates a Christian longing and thirsting for God. I want my God to come home, so I should be longing and REACHING for Him. I’m so distrought and thirsty from this sinful earth, that I need a God quench. When He does come, I know that all of us will be EXTREMELY relieved, at home, satisfied, and no longer THIRSTY.

    HE’LL REVIVE OUR THIRST!

    “12. In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am your servant.”

    God, bring my enemies to shame so they can no longer destroy me. Because I am your servant, God I ask that you destroy every man who tries to bring me down. I most importantly pray though, that they wouldn’t accomplish their goal: dragging me down to sin. This next verse is completely spot on regarding above . . .

    “7. Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners.”

    Jesus come down from perfect and sin-less Heaven and TAKE ME HOME! Jesus when you come, it will be a RESCUE for all of us swimming in the waters of sin and temptation. This also pictured something in my head of a Christian swimming/struggling in the stormy waters. However, at the perfect moment, God came down with His hand, and pulled that person out of torment.

    Along with these three verses, both chapters were extraordinary.

  14. Grace is amazing; I have had repeat on my ITUNES on that song lately because the more I think about what Christ did for me, the more amazed I truly become. As a Christian the Word has become my most prized possession and the most precious book and really guide I have. The more I read it, the more I long and yearn for it; it truly transforms our lives. In the first Psalm I was exhorted by verse 6 which says,

    6 I spread out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah

    I want to thirst for the Lord as if I am in the middle of the desert in blazing heat and needing with everything within me a drop of water…I want to want Jesus that much! And the only way I am going to want Him more is if I get to know Him more and that will only be through the Word.

    In my life, some things have been making my “heart dismayed”. I pray that the Lord will give me strength and perserverence to push through this trial. I pray I do not fail.

    This verse reminds me of Martin Luthers hymn, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. The first line is “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing” God is our stronghold and our protector. When we trust in Him, He will guide and protect us!

    This is a prayer that I should be praying every day. I should be praying for God’s guidance to lead me on level ground and teach me His will throughout the day. God, please let me know your will at all times and please guide me to do it. Amen.

    I like this verse because it reminds me that our time here on earth is so short and fleeting. It’s really nothing and keeping up this mindset that I am only here temporarily and this isn’t my home really makes me look forward to heaven. MARANATHA! Also I need to remember that I have such a short time here on earth. I need to use all the time I can to evangelize to others. Heaven is going to be awesome but there’s one thing I can’t do when I get to heaven and that is sharing the gospel and evangelizing. My time here is so limited and short I am looking to fix my eyes on eternal things and Jesus. I want to take advantage of all the precious time God has given me to do His will and glorify Him!

    Once again, the scriptures show us that no one who is living is righteous enough to earn their way to heaven. Here, a servant of God, someone who is saved, is praying to not be brought into judgment. He still fears God and his judgment though he is saved from it. Its important not to forget how unworthy we are to receive God’s grace and how unrighteous we truly are. The only righteousness we have is the perfect righteousness of Christ that saves us. How thankful we should be for it, and how fearful we should be for those who don’t have it!

    preserve my life in your name for you are the holy one. For we follow your name because we are your people. Though we sin all the time you bring us out of trouble so that we may be like you every time we read the bible and pray not for the things we want but the praise you diserve because you are Holy.     Before I read the first psalm earlier today, I was thinking about this as i was walking to the pharmacy. I remember thinking to myself that even when I pray I am still a sinful being. Even when I am serving the Lorrd, no matter what I do is righteous. I think we need to have a good mindset on this because if we don’t we may begin to think to ourselves that we are worthy when we arent.

    This reminds me of how I need to continually praise God for His mercy and mighty works. I need to fear God and His judgment. God should always be on my mind and my spiritual needs should tower over any of my other needs or desires. David’s simile shows how he can’t live without God. I need to trust in God and do what is right and just in His eyes.

    Every morning is a gift from God and I need to start every morning fresh with God and not be distracted by worries of the coming day. God is faithful. I need to pray to Him for direction and when making decisions or enduring a trial. I woke up sick this morning and I know why, but God has blessed me with strength to still move on. I need to focus more on Him and evangelize more. God is my Strength, in Him I trust.

    I love this verse because David is completely surrendering himself to the Lord and calling upon Him as the only way for satisfaction! Before this,we see that he’s not in a good spot in life and is trying to remember the times in the past when God has come through for Him then he realizes here that he needs to “spread out his hands” and give it all to the Lord! When I am feeling down in sin or defeated by the world, I need to follow David’s example and give it all to God and plead with Him to fulfill me…

    God can do ANYTHING! He can deliever me from evil and will listen. He is amazing and magnificent. I thank God that I can rely on Him in all things. He provides a way out when I need Him. God is all powerful and will never leave me. I take refuge in His name. Glory be to God! :]

    This is a great verse. It shows how our relationship with the Lord should be like. My soul should thirst for the Lord and without Him we are parched and craving Him. Its like you go without water for 3 days and your dying of thirst, that is how we should feel with the Lord.

    I really loved these verses! Praise be to the one who trains me for war with my enemies. Blessed is the one who is loving and is our rock and fortress. Blessed is the one who is our stronghold and deliverer and our shield when we are tempted or in war with out enemies. THe Lord God is so mighty and magnificent. These verse make me want to Praise the Lord 50 Times more because of how lovable and merciful He is to us! He protects us from everything and saved us from the dark. I am going to try to praise the Lord more and give GOd the glory he deserves!

    GOD is very good, and he will protect us. GOD will provide us with everything nessessary for life, and therefore we should make sure to not worry so much about how cool we look, and stuff like that, but focus on GOD.

    Our lives here on earth are incredibly short so we need to “live our lives to the fullest”. That phrase means something different for us as Christians. To live your life to the fullest as a Christian means to glorify God and bring honor to Him. My life here is very short even though it may not always seem that way so I need to use every opportunity the LORD gives me to share the gospel and bring His name glory.

    This stood out to me because it is so inherent for us to do OUR will, myself included. We try to lead ourselves, thinking that we are in control of our lives. We have to learn to follow God’s lead, to put full faith and trust in Him. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to help facilitate God’s plan and follow it through. Let go and let God.

    We should have the same desire and motive to do God’s will and be like him in every way. We need to pray to be smooth in our spiritual walk to lead us on level ground, to not struggle with temptations and sinful desires.

    What great hope we can have in the Lord! When it feels like the darkness is closing in around us we can trust that the light will come!

    Last night as Pastor Lucas and Pastor Ben and I were traveling to the top secret Revival X location, I was thinking like this. I didn’t know how the morning meeting would go and if this was the place that God would want Revival X to be at. But this morning, the Lord’s unfailing love definitely led the way and it looks as if he has provided a location for the best Revival yet!

    This is just one example of how we can trust the Lord to show us the way we should go, he lifts up our soul and leads us in the way everlasting! Let’s continue to trust him even when we don’t know our next step!

    God sometimes seems silent. We pray and we pray, we cry out to Him. Yet He takes His time answering. Sometimes we forget that He has an awesome(in the old sense of the word) and divine plan that will work out to our benefit way more than our own ever could. I need to trust in this more and realize that God is my Rock and He will never let me down.

    15 Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.

    God. Is. Awesome!! If we are His we should be rejoicing every day!! He gives us so much and none of which we deserve! He does everything! He made us! He saved us! He has a plan for us! Blessed are those whose God is the LORD. This is going to be my phrase of this week, and the week after that, and the week after that. God is amazing and I’m going to praise Him more and more each day…starting now. Thank you God for everything in my life! Thank you for my family, school, friends, and an oppurtunity to go to such a great church. God, I praise you for all the blessings in my life. The most important, your Son. In your merciful name i pray, AMEN.

    1 O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.

    This verse stood out to me tonight. I love it because God truly DOES answer prayers. He is so faithful to his children. We just need to trust in him and know that he’s allowing certain things to happen right now for a reason! As tough as they are most of the time, I love going through trials because it strengthens my relationship with God and matures me in my walk. And what helps is depending on Christ alone to help get through things. Thank you, Lord for all you have taken me through and for all you have taught me from it all!

    It just makes me feel so safe to know that I have the Lord as my fortress and the Lord as my shield. I do not need to take refuge in any worldly things because I have God. I love knowing that I can rely on the Lord as my fortress knowing that He will not crumble away or die.

    I love how the Psalmist’s ultimate request is not for the preservation of his own life. He only asks for that for God’s name’s sake. As I think about the ways I ask God to bless me, I should be making sure that all of those are ultimately for his name’s sake.

    I love this verse because it is so encouraging. I don’t need to worry about anything. Thinking about God’s blessings makes me happy. :D God shows his love to us on a daily basis and sometimes I miss it or take it for granted. I need to remember better the awesome sacrifice of Jesus and think about all the ways God has blessed me.

    This is a good humbling reminder that my life is so fleeting in the scheme of things on this earth and in God’s huge plan. I was convicted about how sometimes I can act self-important or feel that I’m entitled to things when the reality is that my life is like a shadow. Wow, how incredible that God even thinks of and cares for me! This is mind blowing to me! I definitely do not want to waste this short amount of time God has given to me by being distracted by worldly things or living disobediently…my prayer is to keep my eyes on him and live fully and fervently always for his glory!

    These Psalms seem to put a lot of emphasis on the fact that you should take refuge in God. When His people are in trouble, He expects them to turn to Him. Have Faith in God in trails, not yourself.

    This should be our daily prayer. That God would deliver us from evil and that we would live separate lives from this evil world. It is so easy to be lured by this world into sin but we have to stand firm and that can only be done in the Lord. On our own, we are powerless and will fall every single time, but with God, we will reign victorious over sin. The war is won but the battle has just begun. MAKE WAR!!

    Some people might be considered righteous by man’s standards, but no human can even begin to be compared to the LORD. We have fallen so short of holiness, but I know that I still need to strive for holiness, and not allow myself to settle for less!

    What a great verse. If I put my trust in the LORD, he WILL show me the way to go, He will guide me. I need to lift up my soul to God, because I am His. If I am going to call my self a doulos of the Kupios, I need to show that through my actions. If I keep my trust in Him, he will keep me on track and living for him!

    This verse made me thing…do I do God’s will? What is God’s will? God’s will is for me to obey him, at all times. I need to make sure that I am obedient and don’t let compromise and the world get in the way.

    When David got distressed by the intense circumstances in his life, he turned in prayer to the Lord. He trusted that God would listen and come to his rescue. Likewise, I need to utilize prayer as a way to rely on the Lord for everything.

    2 “Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.”

    How true. This is the exact reason why we need Jesus Christ: so that we can stand righteous before God, our sin gone. Praise the Lord for giving us a way to be saved!

    We have no righteousness of our own to, so therefore must plead God’s righteousness, and the promise which he gave us. David prays for forgiveness, and depends solely on mercy to grant it to him.

    4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.

    These two verses really stuck out to me because it makes me think and remember how short and fleeting my life is here on earth! The little things that I freak out about or that I may think are super important, really aren’t when looking at eternity! My life is really short on this earth and I want to live it full out for Christ and doing what I am here to do, which is spreading the word! I also love the beginning of verse 3. Although my life is so short and fleeting, the Lord, who is all-powerful and everlasting, cares about me!!! He sent Jesus Christ to do for me! I want to continually praise Him for that!!

    3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him?

    David again predicts the coming of the Son of man and is asking God why he cares so much for man that He would take on human form and suffer for the elect. David is baffled why God would send His Son to die on a cross for sinful people.

    Psalm 8:4 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beingsand crowned him with glory and honor.

    God knows how frail, weak we truly are and our need of His unconditional love and Grace. We are so vain by nature that we see ourselves as having such great importance and abilities. To be a Christian is to die to this very nature of great faith in one’s self.

    Romans 5:6 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

    I like verse 4,”Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.” and verse 15,”Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.”

    I like these verses because they totally put down living for ourselves. We are like a fleeting shadow. Have you ever seen how quickly a shadow can vanish? They just simply aren’t there. This is how our lives are my life is not going to last forever and in comparrison to eternity my life is nothing. I would much rather please GOD and gain rewards for eternity than gain the whole world and go to hell forever. I need to let others know of this because if they don’t know or just don’t care they are in the worst possible position and are ready to fall. I like the other verse because it talks about how blessed those who believe in the LORD are cause we have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
