Luke 9

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

9:1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus

51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 And they went on to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (ESV)

19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”

This verse is still true today. There are many views about Who Jesus really is, but very few of them express him in the same way that Revelation 19:11-16 does. The world has twisted Jesus into a symbol meaning nothing, and even “Christians” have the wrong idea of who jesus Christ is. We need to realize that, while descriptions the Jesus of War, judgement, and a sword coming out of his mouth may not make it onto a Dayspring card, they portray jesus for Who He really is: the all-powerful God who is coming back one day soon to take the Christians into heaven and to judge the world for its sin. This should be a motivation to us to ensure that we and everyone we know realizes Who Jesus is and the price that they will pay for not repenting before His return.

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

This verse should cause us to examine our own lives very closely. Jesus is saying that if there is anything in this world that you are unwilling to leave behind for Him, then you cannot follow Him. Christianity is a complete turn from sin to Christ, leaving behind everything that we once were and becoming more like Christ every day through sanctification. But if we are attempting to hold on to anything in the world, or if there is something that we cannot bear to give up for the sake of Christ, then our hearts are not at a place of complete devotion to Christ – and we are therefore not truly His disciples.

  2. Bobby Blakey says:

22And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

This is one of the passages we looked at in our sermon this weekend at True North. If you missed the sermon or if you want to listen to it again go here: http://www.compasschurch.org/hs/sermons
Feel free to leave a comment about the sermon too!

In verse 22 Jesus is stating his mission to die for our sins and rise again! But what is powerful is how he says we need to follow him. We need to be willing to lose our lives as he was!

  3. 23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

Jesus calls for complete submission to his authority in our lives. If we take up our crosses then we are literally dying to ourselves. We are committed to following and obeying him, no matter the cost. This is antithetical to everything the world teaches. We are told to love ourselves, work on having high self esteem. As Christians, we are to deny our nature completely. It’s impossible to do this on our own… but verse 22 shows why we can… Jesus died on the cross for our sins!

  4. Max says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

    Great passage!!
I love these verses. They are so good because it tells us exactly why we should turn to Christ and how to do it. To take up our cross daily may not exactly mean hauling a tree around all day, it still does mean having to deal with all the temptations of the world and all the troubles that come along with being a christian, like persecution, losing friendships, not being popular and so on and so forth. It says we are to do this because whoever wants to save themselves will lose their life. Everyone who is out there livivng for themselves will one day be brought to judgement before God and will lose their life and burn in hell forever. But if we live for God and not our flesh, we save ourselves from the eternal punishment waiting for us. And if that isn’t good enough, it goes on to say, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” It’s so true. I could rule the entire world and get everything I wanted when I wanted it. But I still would go to hell and burn there for eternity. That’s why we need Christ. Now we have to go and spread this news.

  5. Derek Brower says:

16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Even though I have heard this passage many times my whole life, it still amazes me! From 5 loaves and 2 fish, to enough food for 10,000+ people!

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

We need to live our lives for Christ. Nothing we can do will save ourselves, because we are like dust in the wind and nothing compared to our Almighty God who has sent His Son to die for our sins, and rise from the dead!

  6. 25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?
This verse reminds me of those Hollywood types. They are chasing fame, money, popularity and happiness as if those are the ultimate goals in life. The ironic part is the hefty personal price most of them pay along the way. Divorce, scandal, lying, breaking the law, estranged from family, betrayed friendships. Some of these people are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve fame and fortune. But its all for not. Even if success and fortune are achieved honestly, if thats your whole purpose in life then you will have failed. Jesus Christ is the way, Truth and the life, no one comes to Father except through him. There is only way to heaven and our lives should be spent with pointing other to Christ.

  7. Cameron says:

a theme throughtout this chapter is what it costs to be following Christ. we will face persecution, and our fait will be tested to see if we really are living for Christ.

62Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

as Christians, we need to submit to him in our lives, like Brittany said. we cant just be all about Christ on the weekends or just in church. we need to be ready to give ANYTHING up for the name of Christ, including our family and friends. we cannot have one thing that holds us back, we need to be 100% sold out for Christ. in Revelation 3:15-16, one of the seven letters says that Jesus spits them out because they are luke-warm. this cant be us, Christ would rather us be 100% on fire, or not a Christian at all. if we are lukewarm, we will make God vomit, which is not cool. we definately need to be sold out for Christ!!!

  8. Brooke says:

6 So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

This verse is just an encouragement. We need to have that desire to go out and speak boldly in the name of Jesus Christ everywhere.

23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

We need to be willing to give up everything to follow Christ. Max, I agree with everything you have said. I love these verses as well. If we take up our cross dialy, then we are dying to ourselves. We should be willing to do anything for God, and to obey him no matter what. We need to deny ourselves in order to follow him.

  9. James Purrr says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Taking up the cross is a daily thing. Even though we repent and put our faith in Christ once, everyday we repent, turning from our sins. It is a constant battle but well worth it considering the eternal reward we will receive.

  10. Beth Lauder says:

59He said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

At first glance you might think that it was harsh that Jesus would not let this man bury his father before becoming His disciple. The truth is that the man’s father was still alive and the man was really saying, “I will leave everything and follow you after my father dies.” His father’s death could have been years off and Jesus was trying to tell the man that now was the time to follow him, not at some unspecified time in the future. Many of the high schoolers I talk to are just like this man. They hear the gospel and say, “Yes, I believe that, but I want to have fun now and I will become a Christian after college.” In this chapter Jesus Himself says that we must follow Him now and not at some point in the future when we find it more convenient. We must have no excuses and not put Jesus off, but follow Him now!

  11. Jacob Antoun says:

25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?
60b …but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.

Like many have said so far, the cost of following Christ is giving 100%!!! We need to be focused all on Him instead of the things of this world. I love how verse 60 is such a command. It not a suggestion… Christ is saying “GO! And proclaim the kingdom of God!” We need to be ready to leave whatever we are doing so that we may further Gods Kingdom.

And Im confused to what vs 27 means….?

27 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.

Is He referring to a spiritual death? Or a physical death?

  12. Laura says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

As christians this is what our desire should be. We should want to follow God daily and glorify his name. No matter what the cost is.

  13. Meisha Preston says:

23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

This is such a powerful passage! To gain life we must be willing to totally surrender the life we have now. We must deny ourselves and do what God wants us to do and not what we want to do. As Chrisitans we are not to be ashamed of the gospel! This always reminds me of AWANA…Approved Workmen are Not Ashamed! I do not want Christ to be ashamed of me when he comes back. So I need to not be ashamed of him now.

  14. Ryan Damato says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

This must be the most popular verse of this chapter! It is a great one and there are critical implications to it. One thing I really like about it is that Jesus was telling this to the desciples before he was going to be doing this very thing. He foresaw that pain and punishment yet still went through with it. I wonder how many times I knew what a certain outcome was going to be so I tried altering it a little bit. I hope that none of us do this in our Christian walk and that no matter what circumstance or possible outcome, we would view commitment to God the way that Christ viewed his commitment to the Father for us.

  15. Alex Mishreki says:

60Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

It really stood out to my how many times Jesus tells us to proclaim the kingdom of God. This command is all over the book of Luke, as well as the New Testament. It’s so sad to hear other “Christians” views on the purpose of Christianity. They often believe the purpose of a Christian is just being a good person, being spiritual and maybe praying or reading their Bible once in a while. But God’s Word tells us otherwise! The purpose of Christianity to “proclaim the kingdom of God”! As Pastor Bobby says, the only reason we’re here on this earth sucking oxygen every day is because God is keeping us alive to spread the Gospel! It’s a command to us, and our mission! It is the reason why we are still here on this earth!

  16. Kelsey says:

God says that we need to follow him. And if he can give His life for us, as he so willingly did, we should not be worried about what other people think of us

  17. Matthew Richards (from Cleveland) says:

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

Jesus poses such a loaded question here. As Mike covered in his comment (solid stuff!), people had some seriously misconstrued ideas about who Jesus was. Peter saw Jesus as the Christ he really was. The question we have to ask ourselves is “Who do I say He is?” We need to examine ourselves to make sure we do not have a watered down view of Jesus (see verse 19) but instead realize that He is Christ of this world. Even more, we need to realize the implications that has on our lives. We are commanded to follow and serve Him because of His authority (see verse 23-25 or almost every other comment on this page).

  18. ryan & melissa cox says:

He said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family.”
62Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.

Upon reading God’s Work, whether OT or NT, it become so clear that he requires our FULL commitment, not just a casual church attendance or Bible read here & there. The things these men want to do BEFORE following Christ SEEM reasonable, but Jesus makes it clear that HE needs to be the #1 priority, with no looking back at old lifestyles. Lot’s wife in Genesis 18 is another example of this, and God proactively “disciplined” her for her longing to be somewhere else.

  19. Tiffany says:

I agree with Kelesy. If God wants us to follow him we should give up all we have to follow him.

  20. Kyle Johnson says:

6So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

This reminds me of the book of Acts which we just read where the disciples like Paul were going around from village to village preaching the gospel. They also preached repentance and faith boldly, we should be doing this same thing, we don’t have to be missionaries, we can do it wherever we go in our own towns.

  21. Matt says:

    SOMEONE HELP!

27I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

I actually had a question on this verse if someone could help me out… What did he mean ‘they will not taste death’ did He mean that they will not taste the spiritual death or the physical death and why? I think it may mean spiritual death but I am not sure…

  22. Sarah G.! says:

AMEN TO THAT MEISHA MEISHA, APPROVED WORKMAN ARE NOT ASHAMED!!! haha

10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,
11but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

In these verses it looks as if they were looking for a private place to chat.. then the crowds come and follow Him. Instead of telling them to leave, he WELCOMES them!! HAHAHA that is incredible, if i were him i probably would have told them to get out of my face and leave me in peace!! These are just more remarkable verses showing Christ’s love for us!! :D

  23. Nachooooooooooooo says:

26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

We need to be bold and fearless in proclaiming the Word of God. If we are ashamed, and we do not boldly stand up for Christ, then Jesus will not stand up for us when we meet the Father. So whenever we have an opportunity, we need to make sure that we are unashamed in spreading the Word.

  24. Shane Vincent McCuistion says:

60Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

This verse is great! I am pretty sure that Jesus is saying let the dead just be dead and not do anything and produce no fruit, but you on the other hand, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.

  25. Janiel V says:

26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

27I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

I Agree with you Nachooooo…, we do need to be BOLD and FEARLESS in proclaiming the Word

Most of us maybe “Christians”, but not all of us show our “authenticity” AS a Christian by evangelizing to the world about Jesus and the Gospel. Death is bliss, But ETERNAL Death is agonizing pain that will never leave us once God has reached his Judgment on us. If we do not spread the Word of God, our judgment will be more severe than those who have never heard of the Gospel.

    Spread the Word!!

  26. Bethany Gonzales says:

7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,
8others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.
Now, think about this one for a sec., Herod, the King during their time period, heard about what the apostles were doing. He heard about the healings and all the things that they were doing for others. Now, wouldn’t that be great if we could do that now with our evangelizing? That we evangelized so much, that our president heard about us and how much we love God? That would be awesome! That’s the way we should be and we need to work on that because that’s what God commands us to do and we want to see more people saved don’t we? I just thought that would be awesome if we could evangelize like that. And also, I noticed that rumors even spreaded in the bible times like they do at our high school…. :D

  27. Bre Moore says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

When you look at our eyes throught the perspective of Christ it is clear that being a Christian is not a burden at all. We see giving up our life on this Earth to have eternal life a sacrifice, but it truly isn’t. Life on this earth and eternity in Heaven with our Father, is not a difficult decision when we are looking at it from this perspective. God is so clear here that we must give our lives to Him 100%, we must deny 100% of ourselves, not 99% but 100%. We must make Christ desires our own and live for Him 24/7!

  28. Gabriel Voris says:

16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people. 17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

This goes to show that we can have faith in Christ that he can do anything. If He can feed 5000 with five loaves of bread and two fish, we can be sure and have faith that He can do anything we need. So we need not be afraid of thisa world knowing that Christ can do anything.

  29. Ashlyn Vidal says:

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

This verse is kind of intense….if we are even living a little bit for the world and acting like our worldly treasures are more important than Christ then we are loosing our “life” or relationship with Christ. We need to make sure our life and priorities are full blown and all the way going for God…when we ignore or loose daily worldly things we gain more in heaven.

    and wonderful comment james!!!

  30. Dillon says:

62Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

This is an intense way to end a chapter. We need to give up everything for Christ, no looking back whatsoever. If we know Jesus is calling us to do something we can’t hesitate, and do something we want or “need” to do. It is kind of the same idea earlier in the chapter…

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

We need to deny our desires even if they seem important at the time, and do what Christ says. A person who has Biblical faith in Christ isn’t his own, he is no longer calling the shots in His life. We need to read more of God’s word to find out what He is calling us to do and how we can lay down our lives and do it!

  31. Billl Morris s.c. dog says:

3He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.

We need to be ready and drop everything if Jesus asks us to, and we need to not think twice about it…

  32. MICHELLE :) says:

i remember bobby recently spoke about this passage only a couple weekends ago
he compared how the ninivites repented and they were such horrible people, yet the people Jesus performed the miracle on did not repent. How wicked are we.It makes me wonder what i would have done in a situation like that.right now i can say i would easily repent if i saw Jesus perform a miricle, and i heard the Truth and believed…but so many people would not repent.

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

this verse stuck out to me a lot.especially the part where it says whoever loses his life for me will save it.i really had to do some deep thinking…i was really convicted when i realized i had made myself an idol.i loved evangelizing, and i still do, but i used to really worry about my looks and who i hung out with.i also would worry about what certain people would think if i evangelized to them…like the popular people.it really bugged me.finally i was truly convicted and i realized that this life is temporary.people think that this life is short, so make the best of every oppurtunity…peace love and happiness….we deserve the best….but really, we dont!God does.and we need to take up our cross and give back the glory and the honor that our God in heaven deserves

  33. Jenae (= says:

23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

God doesnt give us all the happy stuff first; He tells us what we are getting ourselves into and what we have to do in order to be christians. We have to give up our own lives for him, just as he did for us and follow his commands

25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

I just love this verse. Why would we want to gain a world so full of sin and corruption, and lose ourselves?

  34. Amelia (Amy) Burke says:

Wow everybody seems to be tracking in one direction tonight!

I agree with so many of you! Beth, great point! Only the Lord knows the number of our days. THREE of my high school friends passed away while they were still teenagers. It is so easy to feel invincible when you are young and that these big decisions can wait until we are older. It doesnt work like that I am afraid. Each day is a gift and only the Lord knows if we will wake up tomorrow.

Ashlynn, excellent point on following Christ andsetting our priorities on Him.
And Bre! Beautifully stated!! Following the Lord is not a burden!Yes, the world can make it difficult, but living for the Lord is a priviledge and I personally draw so much JOY from that!!!
James, great to see you on SOTD and as Ashlynn said nice comment.

LAGUNA/MISSION SMALL GROUP GIRLS KEEP UP THE FAITHFUL POSTING!!!
WAY TO HONOR YOUR COMMITMENTS!!! XOXOXO :o) <3 <3

  35. Murphy Danahy says:

5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them.”
6So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,
8others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.

I like this verse alot. It is really cool! In verse five he tells his disciples to shake the dust off their feet. This is an act of wiping them away, showing that they refuse to turn to jesus. This is showing that we should not give up on non christians, but eventually their conversion is up to God.

  36. Kt Melrose says:

26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

This verse is so true, if we are ashamed to exclaim the good news or afraid of what people are going to say about us, the Son on Man will be ashamed. We really shouldn’t be afraid because if we pray to God for the Holy spirit and boldness, He will hear and help us.

  37. hunter says:

27I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

Matt and Jacob I am going to try to answer your question! In my MacArthur study Bible it tells you to go to the cross reference in Mat. 16:28; then the foot note begins to explain it. It says that this was mentioned in all 3 synoptic gospels and that Jesus said it right before the Transfiguration (Luke 9:28-36) which happened 6 days latter. Also, the word “kingdom” can also be translated “royal splendor”; therefore when Jesus said this, He probably was refering to some of the apostles seeing Him in His glory before their physical deaths. So basicly Jesus was reffering to physical death, and the “kingdom” he was talking about was His glory in the Transfiguration. I pray this helped you guys!

  38. Julia Bradley says:

26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Great comments on this chapter so far! It is so important that we are not ashamed of the gospel, and we adhere to the great commission. We are commanded to share the gospel, and we need to be bold! I definitely don’t want God to be ashamed of me! God’s truth is going to be offensive to those who are not living in accordance to the Word. We need to share the gospel in love and can’t worry about offending them with truth – because there is someone else we are more concerned about offending – Our Heavenly Father!

  39. emily!! says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

Jesus just says it straight-up in verse 23 that we must deny our shelfish desires and follow the plan He has for us daily. It’s a hard thing to do sometimes to live life completely out of our human wants but its worth it.
Verse 24 sounds like one of those opposite riddles or something but its cool because it totally makes sense when you look closely… We can’t save our own lives and we must give up ours to God in order to be saved

  40. Haley Litz says:

This is such an awesome chapter!!!

26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels

Wow! So many people say they are a christian yet won’t dare tell others about Christ. We, as Christians, are commanded to tell others the gospel and spread the word of God. Those who are ashamed, or rather, fear men over God, will, as it says in the verse, be felt shamefully about by Christ!! That is so intense!

  41. Jeff Modugno says:

3He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.
4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.
5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them.”
6So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.
They sure had a lot of faith. We must preach the good news like they did and not worry about who says no. We need to just move on. Their rejection is not rejecting us personally but what we are saying

  42. Jacob Antoun says:

Hunter! Thanks bro!! That makes sense…. I wish I had a MacArthur study Bible…. :)

  43. MJ says:

18Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” 19They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” 20″But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” 21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.

It is amazing that Christ would ask his disciples who they think he is, because out of anyone from that time they knew him the best. They were with him more than any other human being on earth.

Bobby why did Jesus tell them not to tell anyone of this?

  44. big G dog says:

i like this message because it shows how people wanted to follow god but first they wanted to say good bye to thier family or something but we should follow god right when we see him and put him before all of everything.

  45. jeremy says:

6 So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

this verse is very good because these people were going out to the villages speaking the word of god very boldly!! we should try to be more like these people in our everyday lives speaking without fear

  46. Snowmann says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?
26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

All truths that every christian should live by. The part about the gaining of the whole world really makes me think. people who want to be loved and entangled with the world forfeit their souls while those of us who don’t (AKA Christians) get to go to the happiest place ever, (no not Disney land) Heaven!!! and i could just go on with my train of thought but yea you get the picture. to some it up, HOW could someone take what is now and totally blow off something that is infinite times better. That verse that talks of being ashamed reminds me of a song by pillar, it is based off this verse, it is called “A Shame” I am not Ashamed Are You?????? Jesus is so right how we will taste death and persecution as well. what a scary thought, but to be honest i am not all that scared or frightened of that sort of thing.

OHHHHHHHHH YYYYEAAAAAHHHHH SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bummed there is no small groups, i had no homework and football finished early, :(

  47. summer:) says:

i like this chapterbecause it shows how much faith the people had in Jesus and how much they put up with just to preach the word of God. it wasnt easy for them, im sure, but they got through it. Just like us, when we want to invite a non-christian to church you have to build up enough courage before yoou do it and thats exactly what they haad to do
    :)

  48. natedogg says:

16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

It is amazing what God can do to provide for others. He can do anything and we need to trust him every day because he knows what He has planned for us.

  49. Drewsy - SC Crew Dogg Pound says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

These 3 verses really stuck out to me.Signs of what a true believer does and how are lives should be lived. Its soo true how what good is being loved by the world if we have to loose are selves. The true goal is getting eternal life in the kingdom of God, being loved by the world is worth loosing the goal.

  50. Crystal C says:

16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.
17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over

This is one of my favorite miracles. Its amazing how Jesus could make so much food for all those people! We can trust in him to give us all we need.

  51. Matt Lawler says:

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
These verses really help remind me what we’re here for. Instead of trying to be like the world we should be trying to help the world see.

  52. Bobby Blakey says:

Hey Jacob and Matt, As Hunter said your question about verse 27 is immediately answered by what happens next. Peter, James and John see Jesus transfigured right in front of them. They see him in his glorified state! How exciting!

MJ, Jesus told people not to saying anything about him a few times throughout the gospels. He said this because he was focused on his mission. Notice the very next verse goes on to talk about how he is going to suffer and die. People wanted to make Jesus a conquering hero who saved them from the Romans, but Jesus mission at this time was to die. He didn’t want the news about who he really was or some of his miracles to spread because this would distract people from what he really came to do. Hope this helps!

  53. megan cutler says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

I love this verse because it is something that was brought up at youth group. We must put our wishes and desires aside for the Lord. We will live our lives for the Lord. He has a plan for all of us on this earth, and sometimes we need to stop and think about that.

  54. spence dogg says:

26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

I remember Pastor Mikes message a few weeks ago on courageous faith. He explained how David, who was zealous for God, burned with anger at those who mocked God. He cut off Goliath’s head because he defiled God’s name. Are we really zealous and courageous that we call out those who defile God’s name and warn them of the coming wrath? I’m not saying cut off their head, but just to not be ashamed of Jesus. We should all be courageous and not ashamed of Jesus because one day soon on Judgement day we will come face to face with God knowing we stood up for the right reason

  55. it's Daniel Yo! says:

1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,

What? I thought that they got this at the pentecost! Did they get this power taken away from them before they recieved the Holy Spirit?

  56. vsunshine says:

23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

Well I know just about everyone commented on this verse! But is is such a great reminder to be fully submitted to God so that we can humbly live our lives for the glory of Him! Because after all, we as Christians have already given up our lives completely to Him!

  57. Luke Melrose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! says:

3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.

Jesus told his twelve disiples to take nothing for the journey he meant NOTHING. Its crazy how much faith the disiples had in Jesus Christ! They trusted that they would be provided with everything they need for their journey. We need to have the same general attitude. We need to put our full 100% trust in God. He will bring you through, whatever it is.

  58. Alicia Dog says:

62Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
This verse really shows the Christ wants us to be all in. You can not be dedicated to more than one thing. Each area of your life need to be fully committed to Christ

  59. jordan anderson (: says:

23Then he said to them all:”if anyone wuld come after me, he must deny himself and take up hte cross daily and follow me
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

I am yet another person to comment on this amazing verse! But it really does pretty much say it all! I agree with Vanessa 100% we need to be fully submitted to God and humbly live our lives for him each and every day. If we live our lives for ourselves, we will lose the meaning of live. Yet if we live our lives for the glory of God, we will gain eternal life in heaven. God put us on this earth for a reason, and that includes living every day for his glory and purpose.

    (:

  60. DAN DOVIPER says:

20″But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.
22And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

Peter knew Christ was the Messiah “The Christ of God”. We better understand exactly who Jesus Christ is because if we don’t we can’t be right with God. If we do know Christ as the Messiah than how can we just sit idle? We need to be doers of the word not just hearers. Let’s Double It Up! Jesus didn’t want the disciples to go out and preach that he was the Messiah. Christ would later proclaim to be the Messiah fulfilling the prophesy in verse 22 when Jesus tells the disciples of His certain persecution, death and resurrection. Let’s keep praying continuously for the doors of evangelism to open.

  61. Bobby Blakey says:

Hey Daniel Yo, Jesus gave the disciples power to do these things when he sent them out. But this was different that the permanent, indwelling power of the Holy Spirit that they received in Acts 2! The Holy Spirit is given to all believers when they are saved! Hope this helps!
