Psalms 141-142

Give Ear to My Voice

A Psalm of David.

141:1 O Lord, I call upon you; hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
keep watch over the door of my lips!
Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who work iniquity,
and let me not eat of their delicacies!

Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
let my head not refuse it.
Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
When their judges are thrown over the cliff,
then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
so shall our bones be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.

But my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!
Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me
and from the snares of evildoers!
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.

You Are My Refuge

A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.

142:1 With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.
I pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.

When my spirit faints within me,
you know my way!
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.
Look to the right and see:
there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.

I cry to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”
Attend to my cry,
for I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me!
Bring me out of prison,
that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
for you will deal bountifully with me. (ESV)

  1. David P. says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers

    This is a very important verse. This verse lets us know that if a fellow Christian friend disapproves of some action that you did that you know is wrong then you should thank them. It says it is kind of them to do this. This means that if we have a friend that is doing something bad then it would be mean if we did not tell them to stop

  2. Spencer Camp says:

    Psalm 141:4 “Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.”

    Separation. Let me not eat of their delicacies…
    The first part of living a holy life is deciding to live separate from those who do evil. In action, in speech, in character, in purpose, and in just about everything we do, Christians are explicitly instructed by God to be separate from those around us (2 Cor. 6:17). For what does light have in common with darkness, or the day with the night. There is not reason we should be confused with the world. We are as different as day and night and that is why we must not eat of their delicacies or be drawn to their wicked deeds.

    I truly desire to live eternally. To be different from the unrighteous. The world is trying to mold me and conform me into its ways, but I choose to come out of them and be separate and trust in God. I want to live a holy (set apart) life as our Father is in heaven, and that starts with how I live at school! I want to be holy! That’s my goal!

  3. Brooke Miller says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    This verse is very helpful because its an encouragement to be alert of what comes out of my mouth and to think before I speak. What we say should benefit others and build them up, not tear them down! This verse is important, because to me, I know that I need to think and process things in my head before I say them at times. Its also important to keep a tight reign on your tongue! (forgot what reference that was). From reading this, I am going to be watchful of what I say and make sure that whatever comes out of my mouth will encourage others!

  4. Dave Hosford, grateful husband of Sue says:

    Ps 141:3-5a Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies. Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it.

    Lord, please control my tongue today, guide my heart to things of value for You and thank You for Your discipline through others. Let me be Your instrument of righteousness today.

  5. Steffen Eriksen says:

    8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.

    David has his eyes focused on the LORD. He writes that in Him he takes refuge as he seeks to not be given over to death. This is the mindset that all Christians should carry! Having an eternal mindset instead of being so caught up in everything happening on this earth, and seeking strength and shelter from the LORD, seeking His protection from death. This world tries so hard to grab the attention of everybody that it can. I wants to seize their focus so that they will be caught up in worldly things. Instead of this mindset of focusing on the world, I need to lift my eyes to gaze on the LORD, keeping Him my focus as I eagerly await His return soon and very soon! The world also tries to convince people to take confidence in material things and other things of this world. It wants people to feel safe with what they have here. Instead, I need to have my confidence in the LORD, for He alone can save me from death. I need to trust in Him for protection, for He is the One that saves, and there is no way I could ever save myself!

  6. Nicholas Bonetto says:

    5 “Let a righteous man strike me-it is a kindness; let him rebuke me-it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers.”

    A righteous friend is key for Christian living. Christians need accountability because it is so easy to fall in sin, but if I have accountability, I have more strength against sin. I am not to refuse rebuke from any Christian, instead I should see it as kindness and love. I need to work on being more softer when someone is trying to rebuke me and need to start rebuking in love for the other person.

  7. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like verse 4-5,”Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies. Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;”

    I like these verses because they talk about going with the right crowd. In this verse the writer is asking the LORD to make his heart draw to things that are good and not evil. But when the author falls into temptation he doesn’t want to just get away with it he wants someone who is a CHRISTian to rebuke him. We are not supposed to hang out with people who live their lives for this world. We are supposed to live our lives to serve GOD. I can find this hard to do at times because sometimes my friends ignore me and the only ones that will talk to me are the ones who curse all the time and talk about the wrong things.

  8. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

    …now these Psalms reminded me of three songs. “Lord of Lords”, “It is You”, and “Set me free”.

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    “Let not the things of this world ever sway me, I run till I’ll finish the race” Lord, may I never be tempted by man but be tempted by You to do good. That is my prayer as I enter the world of sin…high school.

    3 When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. In the path where I walk men have hidden a snare for me.

    “It is You, we adore it is You, these praises are for, only You, the Heavens declare, it is You, it is You” God You are the only and holy God that I will follow and no one can snatch me out of Your hand.

    7 Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.

    “Set me free from the chains holding me, does anybody out there hearing me?…Who is this man that comes my way? The dark ones shriek, they scream His name! Is this the One they say will set the captive free, Jesus rescue mee!” …very powerful lyrics that will always remind me of what Jesus did on the cross and how I praise Him for His precious blood….(you know that reminds me of another song) :)

  9. Josh Larson says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.
    we need to always watch what we say especially if we are representing christ. i need to work on representing christ by watching carefully what i say.

  10. Jenna Perry says:

    I like the verses 1 and 2 for Psalm 142:

    1 I cry aloud to the LORD; I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.
    2 I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble.

    This verse says how we can trust God and come before Him with any situation. God is there to help us learn and grow and he wants us to turn to Him humbly. We still need to fear Him and not think of him as our best friend but use Him as our guide and talk to Him as a higher authority. I am so thankful to worship a God who loves us and cares about our circumstances!

  11. Stacy Perkins says:

    6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.

    This verse is great because it speaks to so many things: sincere, authentically dependent, and groping prayer, admission and acknowledgment of temptation and sin, surrendering to Jesus, humility in realizing that he can’t do it on his own and that he’s too weak, awareness of temptation or hatred from others being constant in his life–like he needs to run from the people who, “pursue,” him…and run TOWARD God.

    In just a single sentence, SO MUCH. And it’s a perfect summary of what living the life as a Christian is.

  12. Natalie Cannavo says:

    5″ Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;”

    Having a righteous friend like this is so helpful in our Christian walk! Someone who we can look to to help us see your wrong so we can correct it. And when a friend does rebuke us, we need to take that to heart and not get mad at them for it. Im not gunna lie, I feel awkward when someone shows me my wrong, but I should know that it is helping me in my walk with Christ and I should be grateful to them!

  14. Max says:

    4 Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.
    5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
    6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.

    No one cares for us as much as God cares for us. God IS my refuge, He is the only one who’s gonna help me. Even when it seems like i’m all alone, He’s still there with me. He is my portion in this life, He hears me when i call to Him. He’s going to rescue me from all those that are stronger than me, even when i think i can’t make it.

  15. katie baxter says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    I love this verse! It is so easy to just say things without even thinking about what your saying, especially for me. But i need to make sure that everything that comes out of my mouth is encouraging and benefical to others, and i need to think before i say anything. This verse was such a great reminder to do that

  16. 8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.

    Despite the temptations of the wicked or the snares of death, the psalmist fixes his eyes on God! It stood out to me that he writes “Sovereign Lord” not just “Lord”. As I think of God being sovereign–he’s reigning over all things, he is the top authority and what he plans happens because he is in ultimate control–I am convicted by how I can get distracted. How so often it seems my eyes can look down to situations or people or my own temptations and I can try to trust in things or people or the good outcome of a situation rather than taking my refuge in God and trusting him. My prayer today is that no matter what temptations I encounter, situations or people that I will keep my eyes fixed on the Sovereign Lord, taking refuge in him by obeying him.

  17. Beth Lauder says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    Wow, this verse jumped out to me this morning, as it addresses a sin I am battling right now. I have been so convicted lately that my tongue is leading me into sin and needs to be a major area of resolve for me. I have realized that I am not pursuing holiness in speech the way I am pursuing it in my spiritual disciplines like Bible study, prayer, meditation, memorization or evangelism. As I read this verse it reminded me of the great passage in James 3 that calls Christians to tame their tongues. I am going to memorize Psalm 141:3, ask God each morning to set a guard over my mouth, and actively work to think before I speak.

  18. ~ Ariana Mishreki ~ says:

    Goodmorning . . .

    I read . . .

    Psalm 141 & 142 . . . – so sad that Psalm is almost over, =(

    “8. But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.”

    “5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

    Yes, these are similar verses. But they are still importatnt to apply my life to. I should still be praying that no matter when, I would still use God as my rock and shelter. I need Him through anything because He can overcome ANYTHING. I like the first verse especially. I like how it’s sayin, God, I’ll take refuge in you but don’t let evil get the best of me. Or don’t give me over to death. That’s something that I should pray about. God protect me from the wicked and don’t let them devour me with their temptation. Because I’m a child of God, I should be turning from temptation and hiding under my shelter, GOD!

  19. LG says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    This verse stood out to me today!! Lately I have been saying things that are not pleasing to God. Such as: Being rude to mom and teasing my brother or sister!! And this verse has helped me to realize that I was doing that!! I think a lot of the time I am just joking aroung but it is still not pleasing to God when I am being rude to my mom!! Because God even says for children to obey their parents! And I don’t think that me joking aroung with my mom in a rude way would be obeying her!!

    Don’t Stop Standing!!!

  20. Dan Lauder says:

    Solid comment Spencer!

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    Not compromising and blending in with the world is a decesion we all must make each day. What we focus on makes all the difference. If are focus is on ourselves or what other people want, compromise is inevitatable. If we focus and depend on God we will look different. I need to daily redirect mind to the “things above.”

    Collosians 3:1-2 “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

  21. Elise says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it.

    This is something I definitely should be including in my prayers. I need a fellow Christian to be rebuking me. There are so many other non-Christians around me who, if I were to confess a sin to them, try to encourage me and convince me that I didn’t really sin that badly and that I am still a good person because I don’t cuss (for example). Its so important to have accountability from a fellow Christian because you won’t find it from any other person. Another thing I need to be praying for- as the Psalmist specifically does here- is to not feel resentful to a fellow Christian when they do rebuke me. It is a rare form of love that only Christians can give, and I need to think of it as a kind act and apply it to my life!

  22. Alyssa K says:

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies

    I thought this verse stood out to me, especially since Halloween is in a few days. This reminded me of the fact that, as a Christian, I am not of this world and therefore don’t need to dally in worldly sins. I should not be listening to evildoers, even if I am not doing evil with them. (because “bad company corrupts good character”). The delicacies of evildoers are like bad food from mcdonalds…it can taste good in the moment, but its never fully satsifying b/c it addicts u and draws u back for more while making u weaker (and fattter…with sin I mean). Those who stay away from it truthfully know how bad it really is. As Christians we should only eat from the fruits of the spirit.

    (p.s. nothing personally against ppl who love mcdonalds, but i hav recently had to watch “supersize me”)

  23. Jasmine W 2010 says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    Sometimes it is hard to take discipline but when someone holds me accountable or tells me something I need to improve on it’s a really kind gesture. Proverbs 12:1 says that we should love discipline! They are really caring for me and building me up to become a more godly person. I won’t turn it away or take it personally but use it to benefit me. I also want to hold people I know accountable instead of not saying anything to “offend” them. I need to speak the truth and tell them to turn from their sin or fix their bad habits since I am a theophobe! The world might label it as being offensive and intolerant but we shouldn’t tolerant evil. The second part of this verse reminds me of Proverbs 8:13 where it says to fear the Lord means to hate evil. I need to stay away from evildoers and anything evil so I don’t corrupt myself and others. Like in verse 8 I need to fix my eyes on Jesus and live for Him pursuing holiness!

  24. Murphy Danahy says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;
    6 their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.

    Those who are righteous are holy and they only have our best interest in mind. So if a righteous man rebukes us, then the rebuke is good, it is in our best interest, but if the person is evil then the rebuke could be worthless. Listen to those who speak wisely.

  25. Francesca Staggs says:

    I like verses 3 and 8 of chapter 141:

    3 “Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips”

    Something I always struggle with is gossiping. I really need to work on thinking through every single thing I say and determining if it honors God or not. I really do not want to set a bad example of a Christian girl just because I can’t control my tongue. I need to continue to work on this and pray like David does for the LORD to “set a guard over my mouth”.

    8 “But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.”

    Another thing I have to work on is trusting the LORD with everything. It is really easy to set your hopes on people but God is the one who is controling every single thing in your life. I need to take refuge in Him during hard times and I need to truly trust that He knows what is best and what will work out for His glory. He is in control and I know that as long as I put my hope in Him, everything will work out according to His will.

    See you all at FALL FEST!!!! I CAN’T WAIT!!! :)

  26. ready for death says:

    this chapter is just amazing,its david just crying out to the lord to help him because he knows he cant do it alone,
    1 O LORD, I call to you; come quickly to me. Hear my voice when I call to you.
    2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.
    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    These three verses realy are the best because you can tell he is cying out to lord because he wants to gloriy him in everything he does, and thats somethn i realy need to do,cry out to the lord and just give him thanks because he deserves it

  27. Sarah G.! says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    MMMMMM this is a fantastic prayer!! I need to pray for this more often…the words that come out of my mouth are definitely not pleasing to Him all the time. Self control is a fruit of the spirit!! I need to be more aware of what comes out of my mouth before it comes out…:D

  28. emily mayers :) says:

    2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

    This is such an awesome mindset to have when praying!! And, to be glorifying God in prayer instead of just rambling off a “wish list” sort of a thing is the way to go… I find when i just sit there in awe of the Lord thinking about what He’s done and praising Him for it, He fills me and satisfies me more than I can imagine! Last night in small groups we were talking about being thankful for the precious blood that Jesus shed so that we don’t have to face the ultimate judgement of God casting us into hell…. and, it just reminded me to do that more often. Because WE are created for His pleasure, I want my prayers to be like incense to Him!!

  29. Shelby Sawyer says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers

    This is such an important verse! When another fellow christian has taken the time to point out something that they dont think is right we should accept it thankfully and not take offense. It is so easy to get angry or upset when someone tries to confront another person but It is so important that we take what we hear and work on it and pray about it.

  30. kY!3 says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    Great prayer by David, asking God to watch over his lips. My mouth is probably the most sinful function in my body. I can use it unfortuantley to say some bad things about people, to cuss, to say course jokes which is probably my worst problem, and just other things I can’t remember right now.

  31. Pastor Bobby says:

    Like my man David P. this verse jumped out at me:

    Psalm5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    Wow! This is an invitation for confrontation! Today we act like it is mean or rude for someone to confront another Christian in sin. David calls it a kindness. In fact, he wants his Christian friends to tell him what’s up when he is wrong. I want to have this attitude. In fact, I think it is cruel if we know someone to talk to and we don’t do it…I wrote a blog about this the other day if you want to check it out:

    Evangelical Cruelty: http://www.compasschurch.org/blogs/pastorbobby/

  32. Jasmine Douglas says:

    8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death

    This verse really stood out to me this evening. It reminded me that I need to constantly be focused on the Lord. Everything that I do needs to glorify him. This life is all about him! So my prayer is that whatever comes my way, I take it to the cross and remember that God needs to be my top priority, number one in my life and in everything that I do. I like how Christa pointed out that the psalmist refers to him as the sovereign Lord. What a beautiful reminder that God is all knowing and in total control. I want to stay focused on HIS plan for my life.

  33. Lizzie McCoy says:

    Psalm 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    This verse really stood out to me because it helped me realize that I need to think more before I speak. That things I say shouldn’t put people down but bring them up and help encourage them in their walk of faith.

  34. Mark says:

    5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

    No matter how nice people are, they can still let us down!! God is my solid rock that I can always count to be there for me!!! I should always go to God first with all of my problems, concerns, and worries and take refuge in the arms of the LORD. God is my stong tower!!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Melissa Cox says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    This is a prayer that I have prayed many times…for God to help me to guard my lips, to avoid getting involved in gossip at work, to be encouraging, to be a peacemaker, to be truthful, and to be loving. I want my speech to glorify God. I’m going to pray this again for tomorrow.

  36. Luke Decker says:

    8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.

    I am so thankful to have a God who I can call Father in Heaven.. who I can talk to at any point in the day.. who answers my prayers with open arms, love, and protection. God is my refuge; He is my strength!

  37. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.
    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    I love this verse! It is so true I need to guard my mouth so that I am just speaking about things that are wholesome+will build others up. Also I must not let my evil desires take over me and let wicked me bring me down.

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    This is what I need a righteous friend that will call me out when I sin. We as Christians need to have people in our life that will rebuke us so we can get out of sin and strive to be HOLY.

  38. Luke Melrose!!!!!!!!!!! says:

    5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living

    God cares for me all the time….no matter who I think I can count on…sooner or later that person will let me down. Thats why its so comforting to know that God is there 100% of the time!

  39. Meisha Preston says:

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    This verse reminds me of my favorite Psalm, Psalm 73. I need to guard my heart from being tempted by what the wicked do. I need to make sure that I never envy them but instead strive for righteousness. Psalm 73 reminds us that the God is going to destroy all those who are far from him, the arrogant who think there is no God or that God can’t do anything about their actions. “But as for me, the nearness of God is my good. I have made the LORD God my refuge that I may tell of all your works.”

  40. Mady says:

    mmm mmmm mmmm(: this psalm is delicioussss!!

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    This is something that is a struggle for me, as well as it is for many Christians. Its tough because, before I was a Christian, it was so easy to engage in gossip and talk about other people. Now I am so thankful that my life is turned around and that I have the Holy Spirit guiding me and letting me know when what Im doing is wrong!! I still need to work on this though. Although I dont openly engage in gossip anymore, it is tough to not just listen to it and not really say anything. this is still sinning!!! Lord help me to strive to be HOLY!

  41. ELLA says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lip

    This is a Think before I speak kinda think. And how God will help him, and me control my tongue, but I have to think before I speak.

  42. Austin Payne 2010 says:

    8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.

    Our eyes, our Hearts, our minds, should all be fixed on God. The first place we turn in our hour of need should not be ourselves, but God

  43. Eric Walker says:

    6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.

    Without the Lords help in all things, we will be given over by our temptations and we will fall into sin. It’s a fact. It is impossible for one man to stand against the evil temptations of the world and overcome them alone. But there’s good news, God is on our side. Just like the lyrics of one of my favorite songs (on our side by Chris Tomlin) says, “if God is on our side, who can be against us.” Every single time that I have relied on myself to overcome a temptation, I fail, miserably. Every time I put my trust in God and develop the NO COMPROMISE attitude, I overcome my temptations and grow in my walk with the Lord. God is the only way and it is foolish to think that you can overcome the evil temptations of this world. Trust in the Lord at all times!

  44. Alison says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    I need to be accepting of the rebukes of my fellow Christians! God will use our brothers and sisters in Christ to mold us into who He wants us to be through prompting them to rebuke us. I realize that my first reaction to rebuke isn’t “oh thanks!” but more like “but! but!” That’s gotta change!! God is sanctifying me through the rebuke of my friends!

  45. hunter 2010 says:

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    This is an awesome prayer that I need to pray more often. This last thing I want to do is lead someone astray or sin with my mouth…yet if I feel this way and understand the power of my words (James 3:1-12) then why don’t I pray about it? I am going to start praying this prayer often!

  46. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    I to pray that I would not be drawn in to doing evil things that this world has to offer. It is so easy to fall into temptation and do wicked things that many people do today. I have to battle against this day in and day out. I need to make sure the Lord is on my side though because without Him, nothing is possible, but with Him anything is possible. Without God it would be impossible to wage battle against evil and sin.

  47. Lauren Goudge says:

    im feelin this psalm!
    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.—This is a big thing for me right now that I need to be asking God for help with! I know sometimes I say stuff I should not be saying whether it’s gossiping, being disrespectful towards my parents, or being rude to my brother. I need to really start watching my mouth and making sure that what’s coming out of it is things that are glorifying to God and that will benefit what my purpose is here on earth which is evangelizing! There are so many people at my school who need to hear the truth and I need to start going out there and sharing the gospel! This has really encouraged me and now I really need to go out and you my lips to gloriy the LORD!!
    MARANATHA!!!!

    faaallll fessttt!! stoked! hope to see you there(:

  48. Katie Slusher says:

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    This verse makes me think the verse (2 Peter 2:22) that Bobby quoted in his sermon two weeks ago. As Christians we should not be returning to what we were saved from, but strive to live set-apart in this world. I pray that I am protected from the evil deeds of this world and that I would be passionate for pursuing holiness!

  49. Morgan Sherman says:

    1 O LORD, I call to you; come quickly to me. Hear my voice when I call to you.
    2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

    I agree wtih Mady…delicious Psalms! Haha. Verse 1 stood out to me because it is an encouraging verse that makes me WANT to pray more! God never ignores our prayers, no matter how stupid or absurd they seem. I know that I can have a relationship with God that, although he knows my every thought before I say it and everything already going on, I know that I can tell him anything and ask him for help. In my time of need the one person that will always be there and never change is God.

    I want verse 2 to be my prayer about prayer! This encourages me to pray more! I want my prayers to be lifted to the Heavens and be worshipful to God. Me asking for help glorifies him knowing that I am relying and trusting in him, and prayers that worship his obviously are like insense. I need to be in prayer wayy more so that I can always have God on my mind and be worshipful to him.

  50. Zach V says:

    5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.

    Prayer is such a good way to take refuge in God. The “little” things like that, reading the Bible, and going to church are just so important for our souls to take rest in. God’s word is just so cool to look at. Nothing is wrong in it, but all of it is wisdom. Just doing that is how I take refuge in God.

  51. jacksondahl says:

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.
    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    This verse is saying I need to have brothers and sisters in Christ that keep me accountable! I should be glad to be a rebuked when I am being led astray by the wicked things of this world, for it will get me back on track. God uses our family in him to keep us close to him. We need to keep each other on track! When I see my brothers falling away, I need to encourage them to trust in the LORD and turn away from wickedness, and they will do the same to me. This is one of our many jobs as Christians!

  52. Fëanor says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    This verse is interesting. I really need to work on this personally. Often times, I have a tendency to shrug of correction and say, “I don’t do that” or I come up with some excuse. Most of the time, I simply argue that the correction isn’t really right. I need to be more teachable when someone wants to correct me or explain something to me. Instead of saying, “well actually, that doesn’t apply because…” I need to be thankful for the advice and take the correction to heart.

  53. P.J. says:

    “Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.”

    Sometimes, especially at the place where we spend 80% of our time: school, the world begins to look good. But this proves to be only a result of our lack of focus on our heavenly inheritance and a lack of trust in God’s strength to conquer our sinful desires. In Luke 9:62, Jesus says: “Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’” This verse rephrases and reassures the promise of the former verse, that as slaves to Christ, we should not look back on our former, sinful ways and have even a hint of a desire to return to them. I need to focus on not compromising in the smallest of ways at my school and instead be seeking to evangelize and share eternal life with the many damned souls. God use me for your kingdom’s growth and maintain in me a high fear of you!

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. JWade says:

    5 “Let a righteous man strike me-it is a kindness; let him rebuke me-it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers.”

    I need to learn to love rebuke more

    MARANATHA!!!!!

  55. christopheriksen says:

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    Its’ so easy for me to get upset when people correct me. Sometimes I might really get quite angry and bitter but sometimes I just kinda say yah yah and brush it off (thinking to myself that I can solve my problems and I don’t need just another person to come and tell me I’m wrong). It’s so easy to get mad over being corrected, but really being rebuked is a good thing. It shows us where we are sinning and where we need to step it up- and actually it shows God’s love for us because He only disciplines us in that way if He loves us as sons and is looking out for our spiritual welfare. So, next time I get rebuked I can’t get bitter or just shrug of the confrontation and say I’ll deal with my problems myself. God has placed confrontation in my life because He knows I need it, so LORD, please help me to instead praise and thank you when I am rebuked and immediately take it to heart and start living differently in that way.

  56. Jordan Anderson says:

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    Holiness is my default setting, and the pursuit of holiness is my life.

    5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

    I am learning the discipline of trusting in the Lord, and this verse is a great depiction of that. The Lord is our refuge and that is such an encouraging thought.

  57. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 141

    3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

    4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

    David’s fear of sin led him to ask God for help, knowing that God would not listen to his prayer unless he fled from sin. This passage talks about guarding the mouth which is a big sin problem. Our mouths are the gateway to our hearts and we need to protect our hearts from not only hurting others but dishonoring God. One day we will stand before the Lord and give account for the things that come from our mouth/heart.

    Mathew 12:33-37 33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

    5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

    I love this verse because it deals with a specific subject that is not easy for the Christian and impossible for the non Christian. David is opening himself up to rebuke from others which for some is a threat and for others is life saving. If we have not died to our self we will not receive correction as oil on my head but as burning coals. Christians are not perfect so we should expect correction in our lives from righteous men or women.

    Pray for Fall Fest that God’s Spirit would soften hearts!

  58. Rebekah Foreman says:

    “8. But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.”

    I pray Lord that my eyes will only be fixed on you and not the evilness of the world.
