Luke 8

Women Accompanying Jesus

8:1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.

The Parable of the Sower

And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.

A Lamp Under a Jar

16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. (ESV)

Wow! This is an amazing chapter; God’s word is so good and fulfilling!

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

God’s goodness should be radiating out of us just like light from a lamp; lighting up the darkest most sinnful places with the glory and love of Christ. He deserves to be glorified in every way through us. Where ever we go, people should be able to see Jesus shinning out from us and know that He is God. In this parable Jesus encourages us to be bold and put ourselves in situations that are glorifying to God, and not be shy about what we believe in. We believe that Jesus is the Son of God who lived, died, and rose again to save us from our sin, and in my oppinion (and God’s) that is nothing to be shy about.

13Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.

unofrtunately, this is quite common today in Christianity. people go to a camp or retreat, and they get that emotinal high and everything, but when they come back and go to school again, they keep on acting like people of this world. as Christians we are called to spur one another on with good deeds and encouragement. we need to be encouraging our brothers and sisters in Christ constantly, so that they dont fall away. like Pastor Bobby has said many times before, we need to keep the revival going at our schools! it is up to us to carry His name all across the land. but how do we keep up the revival and make sure people aren’t the seed falling upon the rock. we need to be constantly evangelizing and following through with people, as well as getting in the word everyday, and hanging out with members of the body of Christ.

    Nice post Hunter!

I really love this story. Jesus encounters a demon-possed man, and immediately this man falls on his face begging not to torture him. The demons that are in this guy are not so happy with Jesus here. They beg, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” They immediately know who He is, and they fear Him. They are so scared of Him, that they beg to be let into a herd of pigs. I don’t think they wanted that because they liked pigs, but because of what they did next. They went into the pigs and jumped off the cliff. That’s how scared Christ made them. Enough to jump off a cliff. That’s intense. Thiks tottaly shows just how awesome Christ is. Demons would rather jump off a cliff as a pig then stand in front of Him. That is awesome. Jesus has powere over everything, on earth or not. We don’t have to be afriad of anything because Jesus is watching out for us and is more powerful than anything.

  4. Beth Lauder says:

The thing that stood out to me in this chapter was that the majority of people who believed in Christ were those going through times of great trial or sickness. C.S. Lewis once said that “pain is a megaphone to a deaf world” and in Luke 8 we see the truth of that statement. Notice that the people being saved here are not happy, healthy and wealthy but instead they are demon possessed, have children on the verge of death, or have bleeding that has lasted for years. When we see our non-Christian friends going through difficult times we must share the gospel with them. Oftentimes people who are usually not open to the gospel become open to it when they are hurting. So, the next time we have a friend who is hurting instead telling him that we will pray for him, tell him the gospel!

  5. Laura says:

52Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” 53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

It is so awesome to see how Jesus healed that girl even though the parents had no faith in him.

    Great Comment Cameron!!

8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The whole parable of the sower and the seeds can undoubtedly be applied to us! As Jesus goes on to explain, the seeds are the Word of God, Evangelizing. We need to not be targeting just people that we “think” will respond to the Gospel, but all people because we do not know what kind of soil they are. We simply need to plant the seeds and God will do the work! Verse 8 totally reminded me of Mr. Blakey’s testimony! Two guys come up to him at USC (I think…) and just start talking to him about Christ. He was obviously good soil, because he become a Christian and then decides to become a pastor, then in turn, his son Bobby, becomes a pastor. And seeing the work that God has done at True North is amazing! The changed life of Bobby’s dad has yielded a crop a hundred times over. Every single person who has become a Christian due to the ministry of True North is a product of those two guys who first witnessed to Mr. Blakey!! So lets be spreading the word everywhere we are, because we dont know what kind of soil it may land on!!!

  7. Meisha Preston says:

16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.”

Everyday on my way to school when I was growing up my mom would always remind me to let my light shine. Others should be able to see the difference in us. We are not to hide our Christianity or be ashamed of it. We should boldly proclaim the fact that we are Christians and share the good news with others.

  8. Kyle Johnson says:

14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

When we talk to people at evangelism night or my high school, it’s sad because people are worried about this life, having money, and partying and pleasures. They do not realize that they are headed for destruction for eternity when they die. When I or somebody tell them at evangelism night what is going to happen some of them totally reject that thought because they don’t want to be told what to do and will not give anything up to follow Christ, their hearts are just so hardened.

  9. Brooke says:

13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.

This is so true for most people, or “Christians.” The ones who always attend Church and hear the truth, yet do nothing about it and don’t repent, are the people who are going to receieve the greater degree of Judgement. We should not want to see those people fall away or go to hell! We need to be an example to them, and encourage!

17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

There is nothing that goes on and happens that God does not know about. Nothing is hidden in God’s eyes! For he knows the sins we have done and they will at some point be known. This verse should be an encouragement for us Christians to not have the desire to continue sinning, for we know it is not pleasing to the Lord and will not be hidden.

  10. 11″This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God

13Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.

I was here a while ago, were you here the word of god and get a boost of spirit and go to work towards god path. Yet after a little bit you stop because your on to something else. People dont realize you have to repent and spread the word of god and have faith at all times in your life. Its a full time job to life your life for god. I am so happy that i see this now and am turning in the right direction. Now i can help others by spreading gods seeds, you dont ever know what type of ground they have path, rock, seed, or soil. All you can do is keep spreading it and never give up on the people, so that you have a chance to bring them to the word of god.

  11. Haley Litz says:

    What a great chapter!

14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

Wow! This is so true among many people today! I will tell people the truth or talk to people who know the truth and say they believe it. I will ask them why they don’t do anything about it and the answer most of the time is, ” I will become a Christian when I am older, but right now I want to live my life”. That is so sad! People would rather stay indulging in things of this world instead of repenting. What is so important to hold onto in this world that one would reject Christ and basically, choose hell instead? We need to be lights to people and let them know nothing is worth holding onto!!

  12. Amelia (Amy) Burke says:

Great reminder Beth! People are always going to be more receptive to the things ofGod when they are in a place of need.

Great comment also from Hunter! We should all strive to be a bold and bright light for Christ in this very dark world.

-”Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

My prayer is that the hearts of the students at True North are fertile soil, because Pastor Bobby is throwing some mighty fine seed every weekend! The truth of the gospel is clearly being proclaimed at Compass! Praise God for that!!!

  13. Sarah G.! says:

28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!”

31And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

Sometimes theses verses make me wonder why there are satan worshippers out there if even the demons believe that Jesus is the Son of God!?! As shown in this passage, demons also have great power over human beings, but this power they contain still does not take away their fear of the Lord! It was interesting to read about how the demons would rather stay on the earth than to go back into Hell… it shows how horrible hell is.. Another reminder to FEAR the Lord knowing of his awesome, extraordinary power! :D

  14. MICHELLE :) says:

The quantity of increase depends on the quality of the soil. The good soil refers to Gods Word. Therefore the quality of the good soil is good, it is very good.that means the outcome of our faith should be increasing daily!our number at church should be increasing too.we need to go out and make disciples.multiply 7 by 77.God will help us:) but we need to go out and do our part as well

  15. Brett says:

Cameron, that’s exactly what I was thinking about how people get really excited about God and becoming a Christian then just forget about it.

21.) He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

It is not enough to hear the Word of God, but we must be continually obeying what it says and “putting it into practice.” Those who do so are children of God.

  16. christopher eriksen says:

8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Great comment Jacob, that is so cool to see how one changed life can lead to so many more. We can’t let our fervor calm down after camp and stuff, but we need to pursue God actively- specifically evangelizing. This will keep us completely set on Christ as we bring God glory and proclaim His name to those around us. And as we boldly evangelize like this, we need to be praying that God would work through the seeds planted to bring people to Him in the hundreds!

  17. Julia Bradley says:

This chapter is so full of great parables and examples of true faith, as well as the fact that we need to completely trust in the Lord. Often times, we place God in a box, and don’t truly trust that He is capable of doing much more that our minds can even comprehend. We may say we believe in His power, but do we really trust in it?

  18. Janiel V says:

10He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ” ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’

many people take the Bible for granted. scientists say science discovered the things we know today. but it isn’t true; God MADE it, He made EVERYTHING!!! the way to salvation is staring us at our faces, but some don’t see it.

  19. beth sc dogg says:

14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

This verse stood out to me because this seems to be the most common situation that I have seen lately. Friends I have are so blinded by the world’s perspective that they cannot see that everything they are working for now will perish. They know the gospel backwards and forwards, yet the priorities they set in their lives do not match up with how a Christian would be pursuing Christ. Christians, remember 2 Cor 4:18 and pursue Jesus with all you’ve got!

I prayed for revival at SC today…. Let’s make like disciples and spread the Word.

  20. Coxie and Melissa DOVIPER says:

5But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

We need to pray for people to have hearts like this–hearts the Holy Spirit draws to Him through faith with repentance. When we talk to people we never know which kind of soil they will be…but there’s always the chance that they will be this kind of soil and they will be saved and go on to produce a crop.

  21. Alex Mishreki says:

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

There’s a lot in this chapter! But this verse stood out to me the most. It reminds me of that song we used to sing a kids, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…” What a huge light to let shine! To know that we KNOW the gospel, we know the way of Salvation and eternity in Heaven! And why would we put this under a jar, or our beds? We have to constantly make sure we’re letting our light shine in this dark world because so many people need to know of the one and only Light.

    20 comments?! That’s it?!? C’MON GUYS!!!

  22. Snowmann says:

5″A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

6Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.

7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.

8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

9His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

10He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ” ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’

I love how jesus will explain a concept or an idea over and over until the disciples get it, no matter how many times he has to do this. That last part (‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’) is very interesting as jesus describes what a nonbeliever acts like. Even tyhough they see they wont believe. even though they hear they forget and tune it out.

  23. summer:) says:

wow this chapter is really touching for me and it makes me think about so many things!.
in the beginning of the chapter Jesus wanted everyone to know about God’s word and whenever he healed someone he told poeple to tell everyone they knew about his amazing works. But in the end when Jesus healed the dead girl, he told them not to tell anyone about what he just did. i dont really get why he didnt want the people of that city not to tell others about what he had just done.
i think its because in the middle of the chapter, when the woman with the bleeding problems just touched the edge of his cloak and was instantly healed, everyone was so astonished and amazed that everyone wanted to get healed and cured from their diseases. Jesus couldnt heal every single person in the city but he tried to heal as many as he could. when the woman touched his cloak he could feel even that, and he knew that everyone would be crowding him and people would just surround him just to be able to touch him. imagine people everywhere you go, always talking about you and to you, shouting your name, and reaching for you. wouldnt you be a little uncomfortable?i would be. and even though its Jesus, hes still going to feel that way sometimes.
now that i have a better understanding of it, i get why Jesus chose not to tell everyone about this good news.
*i love this section, i got alot out of it:)

i also like the part where he is tlaking about the seed growing on the rock, in the soil, on the path, and on the thorns. i love how Jesus goes on and explains what he actually means by this and that everyone of us is one of those seeds growing in one of those places. whether it be good or bad. each one of us has our own little seed and we get to chose where to put it and live our lives.
i think we all need to live our lives in the soil and preach the good news to others. i really want to try and tell at least 2 people how much God wants to be with them and that they desparately need them. That is my challenge for the week. To talk to my non-christian friends or the ones that say they are christians when they dont act like it at all. Maybe all i can get them to do is come to church with me, who cares that is one step further than they were before.
i think its also amazing that the word of God can travel and spread so fast! in the beginning when Jesus took the demons out of the man and told him to tell others how much God has done for him, he went right on and told everyone about it. When Jesus came back, everyone welcomed him and were greeting him.

wow i just love this chapter a lot!!!! i can like anotate it all but im going to keep my comment short. haha.
    :)<3

  24. Tyler Rodgers says:

11″This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
12Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
13Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.
14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

Ok, so this pretty much tells us how even though we may know God’s word; we tend to get pulled away from it. Yet we need to be like the seed in the “good” soil. We need to stay on a straight path and preach God’s word to everyone.

  25. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.

These people are worried. They don’t want to deal with persecution, they don’t want to deal with not being in the world, they don’t want to get rid of their sins, and they dont’ want to make Jesus their Lord. Real chrsitians are the opposite.

  26. Ray (Amy) Burke says:

My wife conveniently knocked off all my earlier comments so I have to redo this after a large does of rebuking.

First and foremost when Jesus talks about the four soils he is not talking about atheists, but Christians!!! There are so many people that sit in church every Sunday listening to the message of the gospel yet go back to their sinful lives on Monday. How many people attend true north week in and week out (even small groups) yet will spend eternity separated from God (HELL)????

The parable of the lamp is pretty simple. It’s Matthew 28:19 (the great commission) Go and make disciples of all nations… God has given us a free gift so share it by using ambitious faith.

  27. Ashlyn Vidal says:

Alrighty im pumped to comment after small groups:] i love you girls<33

8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
In small groups we talked about one person( well a couple for a few;]) who we are going to really talk to this year about our faith. After that long discussion this verse stuck out to me….we need to be the good soil for the non christians, so that they can grow and become more aware and hopefully repent of their sins. A lot of us also commented that the people we witness to seem not to care…but as this verse says they have ears and God can open their ears and hearts to us… all we need to do is keep planting them seeds and being an example.

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

in this “dark” world we need to let our light show—Hide it under a bushel NO! im gonna let it shine:]—hah. we need to let our christianity and love for Christ be evident to everyone we encounter!

    8 days down babyyy

  28. Jenaee (= says:

53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.
54But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”

Seriously how cool and amazing would this be to see!! I cant imagine anyone not having faith in Jesus after seeing him bring someone back from the dead. They all had so little faith though and moched him, just as we are going to be moched for standing up for him and telling others to have faith. (=

  29. Matt says:

There is so much in this chapter, it opens up with the parable, one of the old wise parables that everyone knows! What a strong and interesting parable it is though. There are all these types of hearts, I hope mine is the one that fell on the path…

    I also liked verse 16.

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

Of course this verse is talking about how we need to tell others about Christ. We need to go on the offensive and put our light on a stand, and we need to do this NOW! No ifs or buts or candy or nuts, NOW! I even need to speak to myself about this one. And plus, does light not shine even brighter in the darkness???

  30. Jeff Modugno says:

46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”
47Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.
It’s amazing that Jesus noticed that someone touched him. He was in a crowd of course people could easily bump into him. This was a different kind of touch. This touch took his divine power. This lady had so much faith that she knew she would be healed. Wow We need that faith. Also how would you react when you got caught touching his garment. She should have never been out there is her condition. She was confident enough to face Christ face to face. Are you that confident to meet Christ face to face.

  31. MJ says:

46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

First off how amazing would it be to be able to see Jesus. And Second touch him. This woman had amazing faith. She knew that Jesus was so powerfull all she needed to do was touch him and she would be heald from anything.

    Amazing chapter again!!

25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Like I wrote yesturday… It seems like one of the biggest things that keeps coming up in the book of Luke is faith!! And rightfully so, because it is a big chunk of the gospel – faith and repentance. It’s really cool to me that the one thing Jesus keeps telling the people that will heal them (or their family members) is believing in Him and having faith. And, one of the things we need to have to get saved now days is faith in Christ then repentance.

  33. 15But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

The Christian walk is not easy. Its hard to evangelize because we don’t always see the results. But that’s okay because our responsibility is to preach the word we are not responsible for the results. That is the Lord’s work. He does tell us that if we keep on preaching the word then we will produce a crop. So keep on preaching True North the people need to hear the good Word!!

  34. spence dogg says:

Wow the book of Luke and Jesus’ life is awesome!!

I’d like to focus on Jesus’ parable of the sower. He explains that their are three ways people will receive the word of God. Some will be excited about it then fall away because they have no foundation. Some will receive it but be choked up by worldly desires. And some will receive the word joyfully and perservere in the word, producing fruit. As we spread the gospel boldly (I hope) we should remember and recognize the different way it is accepted. We should warn others to perservere in the gospel in order to produce good fruit which is assurance of salvation.

    Awesome chapter!!

I agree Ashlyn…pumped is the right word!

11″This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God”

The Bible is not something we should take for granted! This is a guide for a holy and joyful life that we should not just read as another book, but as if God were speaking the words to us. (Since the Bible is inspired by Him) When we read it we should meditate on it and apply the commands and principles to our lives, taking action to what we heard (read). Like it says in Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” And in Jeremiah 23:29 “Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” These verses make it clear that we should take the Bible seriously and see how it is living and active in all our lives and it can cut and break us down so we can be refined and made righteous.
From verses 11-15 it describes the different outcomes we can have from reading the word. Hopefully all of us here are living like verse 15. How can we not, as christians, meditate and try to retain all the information that we read daily, like here on SOTD. It is something that we have to strive and perservere towards because it is not an easy thing to intently think about the chapter(s) you read, we have to set aside our time for it and put it as our main priority…..which is not an easy thing to do since we have so many committments and other activitys in our lives. But God will bless us if we are faithful to reading his word and striving to apply what we read to our lives so we can be holy and pleasing to God.

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.”

This chapter was amazing but this verse really stood out to me. This shows us that we should be glorifying God in all we do, so much that we are like lamps giving off light in the darkness.

  37. Missy Fry says:

    Great chapter!

25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Only God can control the wind and the waves! It seems like the disciples are constantly being amazed by Jesus’ power, and then they forget. How is it that after seeing all his miracles and hearing everything he said about his death and resurrection, not one of the disciples was waiting near the tomb for Jesus to rise? And that is how we are! We so easily forget what God is capable of, and we get scared by little things that he has control over. I want to trust him more in the knowledge that he has everything under his control.

  38. Kt Melrose says:

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

I loved this verse because as Christians we need to be a light to the non christians. We should not be ashamed or hide our faith but eagerly speak about the good news to all non-christians. We should stand apart from wordly people so that all may see our “light” and know that God has changed our lives and is in total control of it.

  39. Crystal C says:

8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The seeds that fell on the good soil are people who listen or hear the word and go do what is says. This reminds me of when Bobby says hearing his message is only half and the other half is actually doing it. Also, in James 1:22 it says be not only hearers, but doers of the word.

  40. Zach Senger says:

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

this is a really cool verse to show us what we as christians should be like. We shoud be shining Jesuss goodness out of us every single place that we go. We should be like this at school at church anywhere. This is a really good verse to keep in mind in all place.

  41. Vital4Life's very own David Van Workum (CV) says:

53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

What horrible morners!!!!!! just a random point.

8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
This is the verse I would like to talk about. When it says yielded a crop, a hundred times more than what was sown, it reminds me of too things. One the parable of the talents and two the great commision. I don’t know if it is just because we have talked about it so much but evangelism has been really poppin out at me. Lets get out there and spread the word!!!

  42. Alicia Dog Back from WA Yo! says:

This is such a rich chapter…
I think one thing that stands out is the comment made from the disciples after Jesus calmed the seas.
25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
The disciples were followers of Jesus, but at the same time they were not aware who he really was. It wasn’t till after his reserection that most of their eyes were opened. Jesus questions there lack of faith. Even though we have the scriptures now I see how I can be much like those disciples. I only know Jesus according to what I have seen and experienced instead of having my faith come from the truth of God’s word. It always comes back to the same thing the more I read study and apply the scriptures the more my walk and my faith in Christ will grow. Forgive me Lord for my lazy attitude about your WORD.

wow this chapter was full of amazing analogies and things to think about.

25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

when life gets hard we seem to lose our faith, and without God’s help, we sometimes fall away from the path he has lead us to leave. It is when life gets hard, and when trials come that we need our faith the most. We are promised persecution, and trials, it is part of our sanctification process. But we are also promised eternal life, and that makes it all worth it!! the only reason we are all on this earth is to live our life for Christ, and that includes having all of our faith and trust in Him.

  44. Shane Vincent McCuistion says:

16″No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

This verse is a great reminder that the truth is to be made known to those around us.

  45. megan cutler says:

I loved how this chapter was worded! It was great!

25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Sometimes in life you lose your faith because life is complicated. We live our lives and sometimes we get on the wrong path, but with faith you can return to the path that God has planned for you :)

  46. Katie Slusher says:

25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

This miracle illustrated to the disciples the amazing power of Christ. Not only does he control the weather, but it obeys him at his command. Christ scolds his disciples for their lack of faith as they worried they would drown because of the storm. (Obviously this storm had to be pretty intense as the fishermen were scared to death.) Christ asks them about their faith to ask them why would they doubt his control. Do we doubt his control in our life circumstances today? Are we worried about something when we should have faith in His goodness and sovereign plan. This lesson in Luke teaches me that I need to have stronger faith even when things seem insurmountable (like a horrible storm), because my God is in control of all things…even the wind and waves obey his very word.

  47. DAN DOVIPER says:

22One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out.
23As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.
25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Why were the disciples so afraid of the storm (circumstances) around them? Was not God with them in Christ Jesus? Even though the Disciples had heard the Truth directly from Christ they still has a very immature faith. I love the parallel that can be drawn between the disciple’s lack of faith and our own lack of faith. We can hear and know the Truth but only when we go thru trials can we really be sure how strong our faith really is. If we face adversity and trust God completely we can be victorious over fear and evil. Let’s make sure that our faith is strong and always maturing so that we are not overcome by the trials that we face.

  48. it's Daniel Yo! says:

    2and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;

Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never knew this before! Is this why she followed Jesus around so much afterwards? Was it in thanks?…Anyway i picked this verse because it is something i had never learned before!

  49. Bobby Blakey says:

25″Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

This is a good question from Jesus: “Where is your faith?” Are we so busy looking at the storms and difficult things in life that we are doubting and worried? Or are we trusting in the life-changing power of Christ to work in us and through us to others? Let’s make sure our faith is in the one who even the winds and water obey and make sure we obey him too!
