23Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

yessssss lord thank you jesus!!! very true jesus and nicely said. :P

47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

48Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

49The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"

50Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

This passage reminds me of an earlier recent message we had when bobby talked about how if we love someone, then we will forgive, showing forgiveness shows we love them. Thank God for his power to forgive sins, i ean even the people were astonished when jesus did this, but you would have thought they would have caught on. then again, me myself, i would be out of wack as well and not sure what to think if this random guy who i have never seen before tells me that my sins are forgiven. And the last phrase ("Your faith has saved you; go in peace.") this is what every christian longs to hear. Our faith has aved us, but the bible tells us that the world first hated jesus so then they will hate us as well. AKA NO PEACE!!!!

As many of you astute theologians have already pointed out these are two great verses.

Jesus is definitely claiming to be God by saying he can forgive sins.

And this woman is forgiven not because of good works..but by her faith in Christ!

Keep the comments coming True North!

23Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

I really liked this verse because it is God encouraging us to keep going! To keep evangilizing and living our lives for Him and we will be blassed. That verse really made me happy (:

Also i love Jesus' analogy of the debt, that was really eye opening. It really put the Pharases in thier place!

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Also i loved this verse. It is though repentance and FAITH alone that you are saved.

50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

FAITH!!!!! This woman had faith in Jesus Christ! And because she did she was saved.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair

This woman humbled herself enough to clean Jesus' feet with her tears! (thats kind of weird today) but back then, the servant used to clean the guests feet when they came in. This woman has a very humble hear to clean Jesus' feet with her tears.

8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

I thought that this was a good example of how powerful God is. He can make anything happen just by commanding it to, like this man could make his soldiers do anything by commanding them to. He makes it so simple to understand God's authority over everything.

44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.

46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.

47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

48Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

I have heard this so many times, but it still seems to stand out to me more than any other part in this book. It shows how God doesn't think of the righteous the way most people do, but He looks directly into your heart. He wants to find those who are truly sorry for what they have done, and know that they are sinners, not those who think that they are too righteous to need God, which is exactly what the pharasee Simon was thinking. Adding onto that, Jesus looks at our heart and our motivation to do good, instead of only our actions. I'm sure that Simon has done many "good" deeds without the right motivation, and he has no rewards in heaven (if he went there) for those deeds.

13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."

The compassion that Jesus had for others amazes me. It seems it is one of his most described traits throughout his life. Many times it says that Jesus' heart went out and spoke with compassion and love. I pray that I could have compassion just as Jesus did, wanting to comfort or help those in need. I pray that we could all portray Jesus' compassion this week.

3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.

I am amazed by the faith this centurion had. As it says that he only had heard of Jesus, and still he had the faith that his servant would be healed. His faith is much like ours today because we haven't seen Jesus we have only heard of the things that he says and we believe and have faith in him.

13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."

I sooooooo desire to have a compassion and love for others that Jesus had!!! it amazes me that he saw this person with her dead child and went over to her to comfort her.. it just reminded me of how many times i've passed by someone like that who needed comfort, and how many times i did not show Jesus' love for them.. I know i need to show love and compassion for EVERYONE not just those close to me. If i do not, how am i reppin' Christ; how are they going to see His love?? Jesus showed me love by dying on the cross for me, the least i can do is to share this love!! :D

This was such an incredibly intresting chapter, like many of the chapters so far! it has been so amazing to read about Jesus's miracles in these last chapters. It really convinces me of how much power Jesus has and how he is in total control of every circumstance in our lives.

If there is one thing we need, its Faith. Faith in God is beyond human acts and beyond anything we can do. Faith comes from God. Faith is the very thing that saves us and if we do truely have faith God will draw us close to him.

9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

This is not just your regular verse, nor is this your regular chaper. God is the being that created the world and everything in it. And this God... He was "amazed" now I am not sure that there are alot of things that amaze God, but this mans faith amazes God.

This kind of faith is something I desire, as a matter of fact we all should desire something like this. Jesus Himself says he has found no greater faith then this man here, I want that, I want it more then anything in the worldd... You should too

47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

If we had a right view of God's holiness in contrast to our sinfulness, we would realize how much our sins have been forgiven. Our many many sins have been forgiven and in response we would love much. Like others have said today, we need to have a high view of God and also need to realize how much we sin. We are incapable of doing anything good apart from God's grace. I pray that we would all have a right view of our own sinfulness and have a right understanding of how much God has forgiven us.

The soldier plays a prominent part early in this paggage as well as the lady that used her hair to wipe our Saviours feet. They are both unlikely people to be show cased in Luke's gospel yet Jesus thought it important enough to immoratize their examples to us all in the Bible. So, who are we to judge? should we not share the gospel with everyone? Every one is welcome to the gift of salvation? We have all fallen short of the glory of God.

That mean spirited God hater may be just the person that Jesus can use...

14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, i say to you, get up!"
15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

i love this verse because it shows how powerful Jesus is and how much he can change our lives.:)just like megan said.

i also like how in the end of the chapter Jesus is questioning Simon why he hadn't kissed him and cried at his feet. Instead the ungodly woman was doing all this to Jesus because she had seen what he had done and she had so much faith in him, it actually saved her.

24After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.

26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

27This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

Love this.

39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner."

I just love how this guy is all...well if Jesus is so legit he wouldn't be letting this woman be touching him....and then Jesus throws down his little story with Simon. It is great to know how limitless God's grace is! But it is also great to know what his grace truly is. It bugs me so much when people say oh well you think that I should stop doing this certain sin because of what the Bible says, well don't you think that God's grace is big enough to forgive that sin.

answer. yes but everything is permisable for me but not every thing is benifitial. If we are sinning just because we know that we are forgiven...then you gotta ask do we really have faith in God who forgives. And that doesn't even get all the way into the point of repentance, saying hey I am not living for my self anymore but for the Lord!....which equalls a strivingness (toltally just made that word up) to stay away from sin, and living a life of worship for God.

wow I havn't done a long one like that in a while. feels good! Great chapter.

4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this,

5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue."

People actualy think they deserve God. Thuth is, no one deserves God who is holy and just. Although He is loving, God hates sin with a vengeance. Sin is just horrible and God can't live with it. Thats why Jesus went down to earth. Now we can be righteouss in God's eyes and live with Him forever. Thats true love right there.

The passage about the woman who came to the Pharisee's house is such a great example of God's forgiveness of sins. There is no sin to great to forgive if you seek forgiveness and repent. We are to fear and love our merciful Father.

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

I love this because it is a reminder how we are only saved by faith. =)

14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!"
15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

I love this because it shows how powerful Jesus is :)

Jeff, solid comment!

43Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said.

I love the parable that Jesus gives Simon. It is so true, when we are forgiven of our sins God is glorified and the forgiveness means a lot to us, but compared to another person who is deeper in sin, it would mean more to them because they were redeemed from more sin and God was glorified more (Rom. 5:20-6:2).

verse 8 stuck out to me, Jesus gets amazed by someone's faith, just to amaze the Lord would be such an awesome thing! This ceturion trusted his soldiers who were obediant to his command. We should be like these soldiers but for Christ, when He tells us something in the Bible that we would do it!

This is a perfect passage because those who have lost all and have had god give them a miricle. These are the ones who cherish the gift with all there strength. Those who have never lost sometimes dont realize all that they have gotten or been blessed with.

The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."

It's funny that these people are so amazed that they say ultimate truths, possibly not even knowing what they are saying! They say "God has come to help His people," and they could simply mean that Jesus "the prophet" is a means by which God is simply performing miracles and teaching; the irony is that GOD is LITERALLY visiting His people, in flesh, Immanuel-"God with us"!

27 This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
This was a great chapter. Jesus is definitely showing us he is God through the miracles he did in this chapter. This verse shows us that John prepared the way for Jesus first coming. We as christians need to prepare the way for Jesus second coming judgement.

7b But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”

I love how this gentile had so much faith in Jesus that he knew He could just speak the word and the miracle would be done. And Jesus is saying that He hasn't even seen faith like this in the Jews. It's a good reminder of what faith we should be having in our everyday lives and everything we stand for in Christ.
AND
I'm definantly seeing a pattern here in the book of Luke: FAITH!

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

Nice Mike! This verse stuck out to me. It is amazing once you repent of your sins and turn your life around to live for God! I agree with what Mike said, that "its easy to forget sometimes the price that Christ had to pay on the cross for us to be able to have access to God." We should be so greatful and thankful that we, and all people have chances to repent and draw near to the Lord. And us Christians need to be those people who tell others who are heading towards destruction, that they need to repent!

40Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said.
Its cool how Jesus tells little parables to get his point accross. It makes it a lot easier to understand!
48Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
Like everyone else said this passage is a great reminder of God's grace towards us and how he is so forgiving.

Thank you Mrs. Burke for the comment! i could really relate to what was written and it helped me to think some things i need to improve on, so thank you:]

THis passage reminds me how forgiving and loving Jesus is. No matter what the sin God will be open to forgive a repentful heart. A great knowledge of the Law ( like the Pharisee) is not what impresses Jesus, rather He is touched by a sincere change in a persons life.

I thought this was really cool, like a lot of people have said, because the centurion was a Gentile and he had faith in Jesus when the Israelites who were promised it in Scripture did not have faith. And I also agree with Daniel how its amazing to see Jesus amazed at the centurion. That shows that we really need to follow his example, by being humble and submitting to our God who is so far above us and fully trusting in Him. He has all the power in the world, and He has chosen to save us, so we need to bring all glory to Him and Him alone.

6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.

7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

We are deemed a Christian, if we are like the centurion's servant; we follow ALL of God's Word, and if we turned around 180 degrees, repenting of our sins. even though we are Christians, we are not even worthy to look at Jesus and/or God and survive. But, it is by the blood that Jesus shed to save us all from sin, that we are allowed to enter the kingdom of God.

Great comment Alex......my SOTD partner! <3

16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”

Going back to Luke 1:68, "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people" we are reminded/told another time how God had come to help and be with his people. When talking about how people were filled with awe because of the power and majesty of God, it is followed up with praise. (Matthew 9:8, Luke 5:26) We should respond to our reverance, fear or respect for God with praise to Him for what he has done! Because like it says in Jude 1:25 "to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen." What a great verse that tells us that God should receive all our glory and we should repond to the blessings and miracles in our lives with praise to Him!

There are a few places in this passage which emphasize maintaining a high view of God. This is exactly what we should be doing, putting Him first in our lives and exalting Him only. Sometimes we forget who we are serving and get caught up with whatever we are doing at the time; we need to remember that the God we serve is creator of the universe!

The part that stuck out most to me in this passage was in verse 9 where it says: "he was amazed at him". This is pretty crazy to me if it says JESUS was amazed with him! I would love to have Jesus think that of me.

The faith of the centurion was great, and it says that Jesus was amazed by his faith and hadn't seen any greater in Jerusalem.
7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

The centurion had such a great respect for Jesus. He realized how great he was. And the faith that he had to be able to know that Jesus could heal his servant just by speaking was amazing.

I am still amazed that Jesus was not afraid in the least of the Rabis. He still healed on the Sabeth and defied them over and over. This proves that Jesus is the son of God even if the Teachers of that time did not belive it. I am not saying he was rude but he still was trying to prove that he was the Christ.

47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”

If you have grown up in a christian home and thought to yourself "I've never really 'done' that many wrong things, I mean i'm ceartainly not like the woman in this passage... maybe that's why I don't 'feel' 'on-fire' for God. I beleive in Him and I know I'm forgiven and all, I guess I don't love that radically because I havent been forgiven for some major life altering bad thing".
It's easy for us to look at the Pharisee and judge him for not worship God the way the woman weeping at Jesus' feet did. But what about us? It is sooooooo important for us to maintain a HIGH view of God. We have to remember that ALL sin is unacceptable to God. Every little 'white lie', every unkind or impure thought, putting anything else before God, etc., is complete and utter disdain for our Creator. Repentance is required for a new life in Christ, but it doesn't stop there. We need His mercy on us every single day. We need to repent and ask forgiveness for our shortcomings every-single-day. If we really revere God for who He is we would be on our knees with gratitude. And with gratitude comes a desire to show Him that we love Him, and we do that through our obediance toHim ans His Holy Word.
How much do we love the Lord? How much have we been forgiven? Do we have a high enough view of God??

Derek, I think Meisha answered your question pretty well ^^^^^. The Roman Centurion is recognizing that while he as a solider has power over others, Jesus has such great power that Jesus' spoken word is far more powerful than the Centurion's. He's acknowledging the fact that Jesus' authority is so great that he just has to say "Be healed" and it will happen. Hope this helps. :)

7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

I love the faith of the Roman Centurion!!! (What is it with these guys? They totally get it that Jesus is God. See Mark 15:39) This man realized that Jesus was the Messiah and that he wasn't even worthy of having Jesus in his house. What humility! What struck me most from this passage though was the immense power of Jesus. So often, we forget how powerful God is when we pray to Him or fail to trust Him in certain circumstances in our life. When there was a problem, this centurion went straight to Jesus and his Sovereign power. I know I was convicted about how much I can underestimate God's mighty power. He only needs words (or even just thoughts!) to make something happen. Shouldn't we trusting in his power? This passage is a powerful reminder of His power and his faithfulness to respond to us when we show faith like the Centurion.

47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

I completely agree with Beth's comment! The woman had the right response to Jesus, unlike the Pharisee. She was not only convicted of her sin, but acted upon it, humbled herself and repented of her sin. I'm just imagining, after Jesus forgave her, how much joy she must have been filled with! The Pharisee, on the other hand, let his pride get in the way. This reminded me of Proverbs 16:18-19, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud". This verse sums up the situtation between the Pharisee and the woman perfectly.

9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

It is amazing that a Gentile would have even more faith than the Israelites. The Israelites had the Old Testament that promised a coming Messiah but when he came they did not have faith in him. The centurion knew that his every word was obeyed. When he said go or come people jumped to obey him because he had authority. When he saw Jesus he saw someone with even more authority than he had. Jesus had the authority to heal with just one word. The centurion knew that Jesus didn't need to be physically present to heal someone. We need to have faith like this centurion.

48Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

I like being reminded of this because when Jesus did the miracle, he proved he was God, and now that he says this to the woman, he shows that he has the authority to save us from our sins, and thats a huge thing! I mean if you just had a friend come up to you at school and say "Hannah, I have forgivin' you of your sins"....it would be so bizarre. It's just really obvious that Jesus is trying to show that he is God. It's just a great reminder to show how good and faithful God is and how powerful he is.

47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

The ungodly woman in this passage had the right response to Jesus, whereas that Pharisee had the wrong response. She had been a prostitute before encountering Jesus and His teachings and His impact on her was so great that she humbled herself and repented. The Pharisee had such a high view of himself that he was eating dinner with the God-man Jesus and missed the opportunity for salvation. That is so sad..he knew Jesus personally and was too prideful to listen to Christ's message of repentance and faith. We do not want to be like this Phasirsee, but like the woman in this passage. We should have a high view of God and a low view of ourselves so that we can recognize our sin and our need for a Savior. The woman did, the Pharisee didn't and only the woman was saved.

8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

Can anyone help me on what verse 8 means? I haven't ever been able to figure it out.... Thanks!

21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.

22So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

Its hard to think of how or why the people of the 3 cities Bobby talked about in last weeks sermon didnt repent when they had Jesus performing miracles all around them! Unfortunately, their future was in hell forever.... We have a lot of friends that do not know this message or do know it and still wont repent! Let's go and plead with them to repent, for Judgment is coming!

9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

This is such a cool passage here. A centurion comes up to Jesus saying his best soldier is very sick. Jesus is about to go visit this man and heal him most likely, but then the man's servant shows up and relays the message from the soldier. He said he didn't deserve Jesus in his home, so just say the word, and he would be healed. Jesus is amazed at the amount of faith this Gentile has. He says that He hasn't seen any faith as great as this in Isreal. The man is healed without Jesus coming to his house. It's because the soldier trusted in Jesus to heal him. He knew what Jesus could do, and had the faith to tell Him that. This is the way we need to be. We know Jesus will help us, all we have to do is ask and have faith that He's right there beside us, helping us along the way.

Jesus is about to go visit this man and heal him most likely, but then the man’s servant shows up and relays the message from the soldier. He said he didn’t deserve Jesus in his home, so just say the word, and he would be healed. Jesus is amazed at the amount of faith this Gentile has. He says that He hasn’t seen any faith as great as this in Isreal. The man is healed without Jesus coming to his house. It’s because the soldier trusted in Jesus to heal him. He knew what Jesus could do, and had the faith to tell Him that. This is the way we need to be. We know Jesus will help us, all we have to do is ask and have faith that He’s right there beside us, helping us along the way.

7b But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."

The Roman centurion had the faith that Israel was supposed to have. Sadly, most of Israel rejected Jesus; thinking he was just a prophet, one who did cool tricks, and was a good teacher. It was truly the gentiles (even though the gospel hadn't even been instructed to be carried to them yet) that trusted and acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah! The Centurion had so much trust that he realized that Jesus could simply speak the word, and his servant would be cured. Do we have this solid faith? Are we trusting God to complete His word through us as we carry His name across our highschools? As we learned this weekend, if repentance is preached, people will repent! We need to have that Faith that God will do what He has promised through us! So lets have the faith, and the confidence to boldly evangelize, and be expecting people to come to repentance and faith in Him!!

16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."

A lot of these people missed the point. They looked to Jesus as a prophet, or a miracle-worker, but they did not see Him as the Christ or repent like He told them to. Many people today have the same problem. When they think of Jesus, they think of many different things, but very rarely will they view Him as the Savior that they need to submit to. They try to affiliate themselves with Jesus without having to give up their lives of sin. We need to be like the others, who heard the message and responded with repentance, leaving everything to follow Christ. And we need to be boldly telling people about Who Jesus really is, begging them to repent and turn to God.

48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

Oftentimes, we take for granted the fact that we were dead in our sins and headed for Hell before Christ changed our life. Sadly, it is easy to forget sometimes the price that Christ had to pay on the cross for us to be able to have access to God. If we remember this, though, we will strive to live a life that is completely above reproach and desires to give everything for Christ, instead of living in sin.

22So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

As Christians we have something incredible on our side... the TRUTH! When Jesus came to the earth as a man he did not ask people to believe in him randomly, he did miracles to show that he is God. When John doubted who Jesus was, our Lord pointed him to the Truth of who He was by pointing out what he had done. Likewise, we can look to scripture to see who Jesus Christ is. We can trust that he is Lord and Savior because we can look back to history and see that he is who he says he is.
