Psalm 139

Psalm 139

Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

139:1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.

13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.

19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God!
O men of blood, depart from me!
20 They speak against you with malicious intent;
your enemies take your name in vain!
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?
22 I hate them with complete hatred;
I count them my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting! (ESV)

What an awesome prayer to ask God to show us our sin, so that we can confess it and be cleansed from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). I pray that at True North we will all be pursuing holiness like we talked about in our sermon last week Don’t Stop Standing #5: http://www.compasschurch.org/hs/sermons/dont-stop-standing-5/audio

I know this needs to start with me as the pastor and so I am praying this tonight!

Also, I am really looking forward to small groups this week so we can discuss fearing God from Don’t Stop Standing #6: http://www.compasschurch.org/hs/sermons/dont-stop-standing-6/audio

    Hope you will be there!

Keep praying for REVIVAL!!! It starts with us!

  2. Mark - In the wee hours of the morning when he should be in bed says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

These first twelve verses of Psalm 139 are so incredible and to try to grasp the vastness of God’s great power is impossible. God is everywhere all the time. WOW!!!! The OMNI-PRESENCE of God is amazing to think about. I am glad that God being everywhere, is also with me every day and through every step I take!!

THANK YOU GOD FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR ME!!!!!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Brooke Miller says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

God is an amazing creator. He has made me and knows me well. Because he has created me, I want to make sure I am obedient to my master. It is just awesome to know that God has my life planned out and that everything happens according to it. I pray to seek his will and to be patient, knowing that he works things out for those that love him! Praise God!

4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.

The Lord knows everything! He knows all thoughts and what we are going to say before we say it. This is a motivation to think before I speak and to always be alert for my actions and make sure they are glorifying to God since he watches and knows absolutely everything about me and what I am going to say before it even comes out of my mouth.

  4. DB 2010 says:

I like the first couple verses of this chapter and how they show how amazing God is and that he is everywhere! We cant even comprehend this and his power is so amazing! We need to be fearful of the Lord who created us and holds us over the pit of hell and has the power to throw people into it!

Even more, we need to spread the word about this and how people need to rurn from their old, sinful ways and follow the Lord completely.

  5. zach vanden bosch says:

16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

This is crazy to think about. God planned out everyone of mine and your days before we were born. I am writing this right now because God planned it. I can’t wait when I’m in heaven so I can understand this.

  6. Victoria says:

i really love psalm 139, because it is showing me that there is one up above who is watching intently my life and loved me so much that he created me in the beginning. I feel comforted knowing the fact that the Lord knows my every move and already has a plan for the rest of my life. Im excited to see what exactly that is!

  7. Dave Hosford, grateful husband of Sue says:

God’s ownership of me: Ps 139:13-14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

God’s supremacy in knowledge about me and everything: Ps 139:17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

Since He created us and everything, knows the beginning and the end, what does He want us to do today? Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

He is with us in powerful Spirit to do what He asks! Lord, please help us to share the gospel today and open doors for that to happen. And please come soon!

  8. Steffen Eriksen says:

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

Davis is writing about how there is nowhere anyone can run to escape God’s presence. If one runs to the heavens, He is there, and if one makes his bed in the depths, He is there. There is nowhere where anyone can go to escape God. To those that feel the guilt for their sin, they might be trying with all of their strength to flee from God. Like when Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh, so he took the boat to Tarsus to try to escape from God. As we all know, the story continues to where the whole boat is being wrecked by a storm, but Jonah is tossed overboard and the seas are settled. In the end, he ended up in Nineveh just like God had wanted him to. There is nowhere that I can run to to escape from God’s presence, for He is omnipresent (everywhere at once). And I wouldn’t ever want to escape from God. Whenever I fall into sin, I need to not try and flee away from God as to not get punished for my sin. Instead, I need to own up to my mistakes and accept the punishment for what I’ve done. I need to never try to cover up my sins because of guilt, but instead be honest in confessing them and seeking forgiveness.

  9. Nicholas Bonetto says:

13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

God has created my and knew everything about me even before I was born. This verse just shows me how much He loves me, He cares so much for His people. God had a plan for me even before He created me, and I need to follow this perfect and good plan. I am so thankful for a God that loves me even when I’m a sinner, it blows my mind!!!!

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  10. Jenna Perry says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

This verse to me comforting and kinda frightening. It is awesome to know that someone cares for me and knows what is going on in the life He gave me. Although it’s frightening to realize we have to watch what we say and even think because God knows everything about us! We have a great God with high expectations that we should always strive to meet and remember God knows us.

  11. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

There are soooo many things you can say about this chapter…God is incredible! :D Great comments everyone! And it’s true Zach, God planned for us to comment like this loooooong before we were ever born! That’s soooo cool to think about! He also planned for us to either take this to heart and use it in our everyday lives, or forget about it after we read it. My prayer is that none of us will forget what we have just read and we’ll apply it so that we may grow spiritually and that “we” includes myself! I know that I can tend to forget which, when I think about it, really upsets me. Lord help me remember Your Word and how it is a light unto my path and how it keeps me away from unrighteousness. Help me remember that I was created by You before I was even born so I have nothing to worry about in life. Jesus You shed Your blood for me and I owe You my life. :)

  12. Beth Lauder...back home in Cali! says:

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

These verses stood out to me because they talk about the fact that there is nowhere in the universe that I can go where God will not be with me to lead and guide me. That is such an encouraging truth! This reminds me of Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God is omnipresent, ever with me and able to help me, through the power of His Holy Spirit to live a holy life that is victorious over sin. Lord, it is my prayer today that I would rely on You and remember Your nearness to me in all places and situations. Please help me to never be afraid or feel alone, You are always with me.

  13. Melissa Cox says:

This is my favorite psalm. It has been a huge comfort many times in my life. It describes the way God is with us all of the time…the way He thinks of us, how he knit us together before we were born. God is so amazing. Nothing can separate us (those who are saved) from His love or His presence.

  14. P.J. says:

This chapter is overall just so awesome, and hold’s many truths that I should be dwelling on each day!

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”

This needs to be the desire of my heart. God already knows all about my life, past, present, and future, more than I know about it! And I ask that He would reveal any sin in my life that is hindering me from being holy.

It’s awesome to know that our God can do so much, as revealed in this entire chapter. I’m going to strive to live a life of fear of God, because he can do so much more than all we can ever think of!

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Stacy Perkins says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Dude, this is a SERIOUS-and HEAVY-prayer. It’s BEGGING for trials. For the Lord to purge us of our junk. Refiner’s fire, baby. A lady asked a guy who refined metals for a living, what the process was like. She asked him how he knew the metal was ready to come out. He said it’s simple: he always has a watchful eye on the metal, so he knows just when to take it out. And the time is right, he told her, when he can see his own reflection in the metal. God is the ultimate blacksmith. If we are in Him, we HAVE to KNOW that He ALWAYS has HIS watchful eye on US, and He won’t let us burn in the fire of our trials. As hot as it gets for us. He takes us out as soon as He sees His reflection in us. Father, THANK YOU for Your ever-watchful eye and Your faithful testing of us.

Do we be-LIEVE this…? I know I do. And I’m stoked to urge all the True Northerners to a place in your hearts where you, TOO, believe this and live it out. Amen!

  18. Matthew Crane says:

Man this is such an amazing Psalm!! The underlying theme of this Psalm is of course the fact that God knows us.

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

Reading this Psalm is such a blessing but at the same time it makes me nervous. Because I know that God knows me; as a matter of fact he knows me better than I know me. God knows everything about me, even the way every atom is working with others in my bodies physical structure.

But he doesn’t just know my physical side, but also my spiritual side and where my heart truely lies. He knows my sin, he knows my desire, he knows my inner thoughts… Which leads me to a question, why does He love me? I am a wicked person and I am worthy of hell but God, with the punishment of his son, gives me heaven. God I love you so very much, please keep me standing!

  19. Max says:

I love verses 13-16. It’s just amazing how God already knew everything about me boefore i was even born! He knew how i would look, act, and what i would do with my life. That is just amazing! God made me unique and He planned out everything for me before i even entered this world! And also, these verses reminded me of last year in english class when we had to do some debates. One debate i had to do was whether abortion was right or wrong. These verses pretty much summed up what i said, God made each and everyone of us humans and He had already planned out our entire lives before we are born. God always amazes me!

    Goodmorning . . .

    I Read . . .

    Psalm 139 . . .

Bottom line of this verse: GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT ME BECAUSE HE MADE ME AND IS WITH ME ALWAYS.

No matter the place I go, wether it be in darkness, He’ll make it into light and He’ll see me. Because my father made me from the day I was conceived, He knows EVERYTHING I’ve done, everything I am doing, and everything I will do. My Father first layed eyes upon me right when the “earth was woven together.” That’s pretty amazing to think about.

Every single verse in this chapter hit the nail right on the head. They’re all so STRAIGHT FORWARD. Most of the chapter is talking about, no matter where we go, God will always be with us. Even if we want to get away, GOD WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US. If we think we’re hidden, GOD WILL ALWAYS FIND US. Our Father is so astounding, that He completely knows the words on my tounge even if they haven’t come out yet. He’s searched me, and He knows me FULLY

THE WHOLE CHAPTER WAS PHENOMENAL! ALL THE VERSES STOOD OUT TO ME!

God knows all. We could say nothing and He still knows. God is great and is the best friend anyone could have because He already knows and is ALWAYS there. He truely is AMAZING and I want to get that out so others may know! I love the Bible and all the Psalms. Glory be to God! :]

  24. kyle johnson says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

God knows us. He knows what is going through our mind, those silent thoughts that no one knows about. There’s nothing in me that is hidden from God. God knows my motives, my emotion. He knows everything about me. So, I shouldn’t think that no one knows about any anger or envy or jealously in my heart because God knows. I can’t hide anything.

  25. Jasmine 2010 :) says:

Wow! I love this psalms. So many great verses. Great blog Bobby! That was just what I needed =]

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

God created and made every single person in their mother’s stomach. It’s really sad when I see people who say they are Christians who think nothing is wrong with abortion and they are pro choice. That makes my heart break because it states here clearly that God created every baby even in the womb. Every baby no matter how small or young matters to Him but yet people are saying that compromising evil and saying that it is okay and fine :( (((

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

A lot of girls struggle with insecurities or always complaining about their physical appearance. Saying “Or if only I was…” But I should praise God because He made me in His image! I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that should all of His works are wonderful. Before I was saved, I would always put all my energy into wishing I could be someone else or envying what this girl had but after that I realized that God is all I need. He made me in His image and looks at my heart. How awesome is that!

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

The psalmist writes that God’s thoughts are so precious to Him! They are precious to me also and because of that I really want to be in the Word as much as possible tostrengthen my faith and relationship with Him.

  26. Alicia Karlsson says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

As I ponder this verse I am really struck by the wickedness of my own heart. Jeremiah says Our hearts are not pure they are sick and deceitful and will lead us a stray. David knows this and therefore crys out that God would search every part of him. This should be the prayer of each of us everyday. That God would search every part of me and uncover any sinful thought or behavior. Do I have any offense in me today Lord, or what are the anxious thoughts that I am dwelling on that keep me from trusting you. Lord, I pray that you will search it all, that all of the wickedness that is in my heart would be unveiled and I would confess any and every sin before you so that I may be blameless, and that I would strive to walk a holy obedient life.

  27. Elise says:

3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD

God’s sovereignty is absolutely breath-taking! This amazing Psalm shows us that He is all powerful, all knowing, and is always present. It defintely convicted me of forgetting how sovereign (in complete control) He is. Not only is He in control of the situations in life that I am foolishly afraid of, but He has planned out every single moment of my life. Just that fact alone is enough reason for me to tremble before Him. The convicting part is that I don’t always remember this, I don’t always fear Him. If I ever choose to sin, I am ignoring God’s command (and what should be my immediate reaction) to fear and obey Him. My flesh must be even more corrupt than I can fathom if it causes me to forget to fear God every moment of every day. That makes me even more amazed at God’s grace and Christ’s sacrifice for someone as sinful (and forgetful) as me.

  28. Brennan says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

this verse is so awesome, it shows that god knows our dislikes and likes our struggles and strengths. He knows how far you can go. he alswo knows what you can take in trials and everyday thing.

  29. Sarah G.! says:

Psalm 139 is one of my favorite Psalms!! David expresses such an beautiful, intimate relationship with God. God is seen as everywhere and in everything we do. Love and fear correlate in that relationship, for He is 100% loving and 100% judgemental (beach nights!! ;D). David seeks God with everything he is, and understands that God created him from the beginning to give Him the glory!! I pray this Lord…

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
    :D

    AWESOME comment Stacy!!!

Wow, I agree… This verse is so intense!! But it’s what I want to ask of the Lord! I want Him to show me my sins that I may not even be aware of and guide me towards Himself through trials… and I will “consider it pure joy” as it says in James 1!! Because HE knows exactly whats best and He knows my heart and my motives

  31. Mike says:

21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you?

Psalm 139 is such a wonderful description of how God knows us better than we know ourselves, and yet He still loves us. When reminded of this fact, our first response should be praise. Yet it is too easy to know this in our head without it making any difference in our lives. If this God, who we saw over the weekend is a consuming fire, can see our hearts and knows our actions before we do, then we need to be living in a way that will bring Him glory and honor instead of arousing His anger. The area that this verse discusses is our attitude towards sin around us. It can be very easy to develop a lax attitude towards sin, since we are surrounded by it constantly and can “grow comfortable” with it. instead, I need to be boldly taking a stand for Christ, letting people know of their need to repent. Evangelism is a command directly from Christ (Matthew 29:19-20), and I need to take this seriously, since my actions – and my heart while I do them – are known by a God who knows me perfectly, a God that I need to be striving to please in everything.

  32. Allen McAnlis says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Hate to sound like I copied the people before me but I promise I picker theses verses before I saw that :) . These verses really struck me when I read them. The verses before it was talking about hating the enemies of God, yet God tells us to love our enemies. We think we do Him a favor by hating those who defile Him. I need to show patients and love for them and try and show them God’s love. I need to continually ask God for guidance so that I am not offensive to Him. I need to obey Him and follow what He has set apart for me to do.

  33. Tristan Jorden says:

    What an amazing Psalm!

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

God is all-knowing, all-powerful. He knows me completely, leaps more than I know myself. He knows what my life will unfold, whereas I only know minute by minute. There is no one like Him; who He is is beyond our human comprehension. So, why at times do I question His plan or critique how my life is laid out? I need to place full confidence in His perfection for He sees and knows everything.

  34. Adam Duarte [2010] says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

This verse starts off a trend in this psalm that really got me thinking about how wonderful and intimate our relationship with the Lord is. From the dawn of time He knew us, knew exactly what we would do in our lives, who we would become. He knows us better than anyone, and He has expressed a more profound love for us than anyone ever could. In the darkness He helps us stand fast. Very encouraging! :D

  35. Angela says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

These verses really spoke to me when I read them. They really show how i need to to be. I need to b more patient and kind towards though who don’t know the gospel instead of thinking the wrong thing about them. I need to search my own heart, instead of pointing my fingers and judging others because God in the only judge.

  36. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

This Psalm was awesome!! Every verse was so great and so true, and really glorifies God in a super legit way! I think all the verses in this Psalm were amazingg… but this verse just explains one great thing talked about in this Psalm. God knows everything about us, He knows our thoughts, and especially what we say to Him or other people. At first when I htink about it, it is kind of creepy… but then again this is God and He does have the right to know our thoughts and stuff… He made us! Not only has he made us, He also cares about us and loves us, so He should be able to know our thoughts! From now on, I will watch what I say and think about everything and make it how a person living for God would talk and think even more!

  37. Spencer Camp says:

Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

    This is an awesome chapter!

Asking God to search your heart and to bring to light the detestable things practiced is the biggest sign of a distaste for sin and a craving for holiness. David is making true war against sin! And isn’t it a painful process? Of course! David is basically asking God to reveal to him how bad he truly is, pertaining to the sins he has committed. The truth is not always fun.

John 3:19-21 “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

David clearly does this: he asks God to expose the truth of his sins by His light.
Lord, would you expose the detestable sins of my heart so that I may glorify you in all things I do. May I see clearly the true pollution inside of me so that I might know plainly that what has been done inside me has been done through you. I want to pursue holiness until your coming Lord.

  38. David P. says:

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

This verse is very important. It let’s us know that there is no where that we can go to hide from God. It says He is in the depths. This means that even in the worst place that you can possibly think of, God is there. We have to remind ourselves that God is always watching us even if nobody else is.

  39. Rebekah Foreman says:

I love how God knows everything we do its frightening at the same time but if your living your life for God what is there to fear nothing. God made me and knows me inside and out and I thank you Lord for protecting me and watching out for me.

  40. AL∑C™ 2010 says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Yes o lord help me in my anxious moments. lord please lift me and encourage me in stressfull moments

  41. Wesley Wong says:

The moment when God molded and knitted us in our mother’s womb (and even before that), God knew exactly what thoughts we are going to think, words we are going to speak, things we are going to do. God is all knowing and all powerful!

  42. Katie Melrose says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.

God knows eveything that goes on in our lives even the hidden things in our heart. Its weird to think, buit God knows us better than ourselves. God knows everything that goes on in my life and this encourages me to live a more holy life because im going to get judged for everything in my life. These verses again just remind me again of how powerful he is. He is in control of my life therefore I should put all my worries in my his hands. Thank you Lord for my salvation! Maranatha!!!

  43. kelly causky says:

16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

We do not even know what will happen tomorrow, but God, even before we were born, planned and knows what every single day of our entire life will be like. The Lord is our magnificent Creator. His power over everything was really made clear in this Psalm and it blows me away. It is amazing to think that God made every one of our days. I really do not have to worry about anything..

  44. Ryan Cox says:

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

This whole psalm is so profound & comforting! Theology is sometimes referred to as “thinking God’s thoughts after him,” and that’s the process the psalmist is praising in a sense. I can’t wait to know God’s actual moment by moment thought process in the New Jerusalem, but his word gives us a pretty good preview!

  45. Kelsey says:

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

I like this verse because it reminds me of a couple of things. One is that the Lord is everywhere, and he knows everything; we cannot escape him or hide anything from him. this goes along with fearing the Lord because we should be scared into submission, and that may drive some to hide our sins, or at least try, but each time we will fail, the Lord knows us inside and out. ALso, the lord is everywhere which is comforting, it reminds me of his promise to us in psalms where he says he will never forsake us. He will always be with us to guide us, and i need to make sure I thank him for that.

  46. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
I love it how God is all knowing. This verse just shows me how amazing God is that he knows what I will say before I say it. That verse just makes me want to praise God in the way I talk and live my life.

  47. Eric Walker says:

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

GOD IS EVERYWHERE!!! If ever we are tempted to sin because we “think” were alone, its important to remember, God is always watching you. If your like me, this should freak you out. GOD IS ALWAYS WATCHING! I pray that we would remember this and be afraid of the day when we see God face to face and he tells us all of the sin that we have committed, this should make us want to stop sinning. MAKE WAR WITH SIN!!!!!

  48. Meisha Preston says:

16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

This verse is such a comfort to me! God planned out all my days before I was born…before one of them came to be. Why do I worry? How foolish of me!!! Will worrying change what God has already planned from before the time I was born?? Of course not!! All that worrying accomplishes is making me upset, and both worrying and being upset are sins because I am not trusting in Almighty God. Lord, please forgive me when I worry and help me to remember that you have all my days planned out already.

  49. Alison says:

Oh myyy goodness what an amazing Psalm!!

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

This is a great thing to pray! To grow, we have to be tested and face trials. We have to be in the Word, our “mirror,” to find our flaws. We need to rely on God to lead us in the right direction. Love that!!

  50. Lauren Goudge says:

THIS IS LIKE MY FAVORITE PSALM!!!
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.—Lovee thiss! I really need to be thanking God more for making me the way He has made me! I know that sometimes I look at all of my “imperfections” but really I need to be satisfied with the way God made me because He made me in His image and all I need to do is strive to be as perfect and as holy as he is everyday! It even says that His works are wonderful and I know that the LORD only does good so I need to be making Him my idol and the one that I am looking up to the most and trying to be like!!!
    MARANATHA!!

praying that i can go to small groups tomorrow!! falll festt! stookedd :D

  51. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 23-24,”Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

I like these verses because the writer is asking GOD to test him to figure out if he is in sin so that he may change to the way GOD wants him to be through the process of sanctification. I need to ask GOD for tests so that I may find my faults or weak points so that I may improve and not do them or not be weakened by them so that I may stay from sin.

  52. SEAN says:

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

God is everywhere we go. this is an awesome reminder hes always there to protect you.

  53. Nathan ORtiz says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

These Verses are awesome and just show me that i need to be seeking more help from God and trying to live a perfect life that no one can live but Jesus Christ our lord and savior.

  54. nicolee vanderlaann((: says:

    FYI I LOVE THIS PSALM!

10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
God is always there for everyone, including myself. Everything that happens in life happens because it is was what God wanted to happen for us.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
I just pray that through all my trials and temptations i would think about the Lord and think about what it is that he is trying to use that trial for.

  55. JWade says:

This is one of my favorite psalms. It is amazing that God is really with me at all time. And it is soooo encoraging that he guides me. Since he sees everything I do and he knows every thought that I think it helps me stay away from sin while I’m alone.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!

  56. Brezzy Bri says:

    I like —–>

1 O LORD, you have searched me
    and you know me.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD
    23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

This verses show that God is everywhere and knows everything before we think it, before we say it and he know before we do it. We can never hide from God because he is everywhere and he is always with us.

  57. Brezzy Bri says:

    agree with nicole !! <3333 :)

  58. Jasmine Douglas says:

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

It’s easy to forget that God “knit us together.” We are indeed His creation! And he knows each and every one of us! Don’t forget that we have a specific purpose here on earth. I want to seek Him in everything and not waste my limited time here. Our citizenship is in Heaven! But until then, we are here to glorify God through all that we do and shine a light to the world!
Thank you, Jesus for my physical, mental and emotional health! What a blessing that is and I don’t want to take it for granted!

  59. jeremy says:

O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

i liked this verse god knows us the best..he created us and he knows exactly how we are… he knows all our inner thoughts and wat we think

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

i also liked this verse, we should want the lord to test us and look at our anxious thoughts because if we are truly christians we should come up with clean and pure thoughts..

  60. Allie Moorefield(: says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
This whole psalm is beautiful!!! It is hard to find specific verses because they were all so amazing and truthful. The Lord have searched us, created us, and knows us more than we know ourselves! Before we speak something or even think of it, the Lord knows the entire thought or words. God is familiar and knows all of our ways, including our weaknesses.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
I love this verse because the answer is always going to be nowhere, you can never flee from God’s presence! He is always with us and he knows every single action, thought, sin, EVERYTHING. There is nowhere we can run too or hide from that!

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
These are also great verses!! Because the Lord knows our hearts and has searched us over and over again, we should be willing for Him to test us and provide us with trials so we can learn how to overcome them with the help of the Lord! We should be asking the Lord to test us and look for any offensive ways in us and look for the bad things so we can fix them. Also so that He will lead us in the everlasting way of life and not the wrong path!

Wow!!!! What a great psalm (: God’s Word is AWESOME!!

  61. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

The Lord knows everything about us and every action that we make. As it says in this verse He even knows when we sit or rise. This is scary because one day all our sin will be put out in front of us when we are to be judged. The Lord knows everything that we did on planet earth. This just makes me want to stop sinning because I want my judgement to be short as possible.

  62. Haley Litz says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

What a great psalm!!! These verses are my prayer this week! I love how the psalmist is asking God to search him and show him his sin! In the previous verses, he goes on about how God is all-knowing and His knowledge is beyond my understanding! I pray that God will search me and show me my sin, that I may be pursuing holiness this week, fighting full out in a war against sin!!

  63. Never Take David Personal says:

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

ok, so as my friend Eric has mentioned… God is everywhere…as a Chritian we can see this one truth and have two reactions to it…the first is sorta to that of “Big Brother is watching (from 1984)” in the fact that we don’t want to do what our master says not to do because he knows if we sin against him. The second is a reaction of comfort and relief. We know that our God is for us not against us, and that if he is for us who can be against us…and we also know that while we are not in Heaven with God, He is never far from us. It brings me great comfort to know that my God is near…no matter where I go…I mean he is my strong tower and my shelter, my rock and my redeemer… just some thoughts…I want to meditate on this fact as I go to skool and face who knows what…

  64. Jake says:

24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting

This is a great verse that shows how we grow as Christians. We should he praying for this so we can recognize sin that we may not see in our life and then confess and repent of it. We should see His trials not as bad things but an opportunity to grow spiritually. I pray that God will make known to me the son I do not recognize in my life.

  65. Luke Melrose!!!!!!!!!!! says:

4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD

God knows what I say before I even say it! This is a good verse to motivate me to be careful what I say.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

These last two verses are amazing! Its a perfect prayer that we should always ask God. Gos knows our heart and our thoughts….he knows us better than we know ourselves! My prayer is that God will examine me and point out my wicked ways, and to least me in the everlasting way.

  66. Ian H. says:

4 “Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”

I’m with David on this one. When I really contemplate what God is like, for instance–as David talks about here–how He is omnipresent and omniscient (all-present and all-knowing), it becomes clear that I cannot fully fathom Him; He is too awesome; “such knowledge is too wonderful for me”. Even though it is true that in this life I will not be able to fully understand God, I want to know Him as best I can, and be thinking about/focused on Him as much as I can.

14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

If I am constantly thinking about/focused on the Lord, I will gain greater knowledge of Him. David did, and his response to that knowledge was to praise and worship. God, help me to do the same.

  67. Katie Slusher says:

24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Talk about pursuing holiness! Rather than continuing in sin, I need to be continually examining myself to see if there is any offensiveness in me. I pray that God will illuminate the wickedness still reigning in me and that once uncovered I will war to remove it from my heart.

  68. 1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

God knows each and every one of us. He knows our hearts and our every thought and action. He is God and He knows all things and everyone completely.

God knows me so well. He knows the things about me that even I have forgotten, Since He knows all about me and He watches over me, He knows my sin. This should make me want to sin less and be as obedient to God as possible. He knows when I’m struggling or being tempted and if I just give it all to Him, I don’t need to worry or be stressed.

    Our Lord is so good!

  69. ELLA says:

I was looking at this chapter all day trying to figure out which verse I should comment on. I just couldn’t find one until I read a few more times.

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I were to go anywhere to hide from God, I can’t. God knows everything and is everything and is everywhere. I realized that what I do is always before God. I asked myself of what I do, does God see as good and He being proud of me. But I answered in a NO. Whatever I do I try to do good, but then want to go my own way and end up doing bad. This is where His Spirit comes into me and telling me that I did bad and that I need to stop.

  70. jacksondahl says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

I love this Psalm!!! These two verses are so awesome.. I should be praying that God do this everyday. I need praying that He will show me the faults that I don’t see in myself, where I am unholy! I pray that God will test me, that I will endure hardship in His name! The LORD is leading me, and I know He always will! I need to pray that I will always trust Him to keep me on His path!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  71. Jordan Anderson says:

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

The Lord knows me better than i could even begin to know myself. He knows every thought and how many hairs are on my head. I am asking the Lord to search me, and show me the areas in my life that i need to grow in, because i want to become as holy as i can be in the eyes of my Lord.

  72. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Great comment, Tristan! God has full knowledge, this doesn’t even make sense to me, I’m always trying to understand things better or get all sides of a situation. But God he is perfect in his knowledge of me. This definitely makes me think about fearing him more by obeying him and getting rid of my sin each day and also trusting him completely. How could I question or fight against or pout about the plans of God?! He is awesome, no one can compare!

  73. christopheriksen says:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

God already knows exactly what I am thinking (David just spent 18 verses saying how God knows everything about our inmost being), so its not like we are asking Him to search us for Him to know what is going on. But like David I pray that God will reveal to me what I am doing wrong so that I can stop it. LORD, thank you for revealing our sin to us through your Word as well as things like our close friends. Please continue to reveal my sin to me and please help me not to get defensive when I am confronted but rather listen and try to stop sinning in that way.

  74. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 139

19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.

I love how David here shows his utter distain and anger for men who hate God. David’s anger is obviously completely justified. As believers we are disgusted and become angry when we hear people slander our Lord. Surely a Christian is not going to Love or support someone who is against God. Of course not we would consider them our enemies. These four verses reminded me of the double standard that Christians have with men who hate the Lord. It also can be one of the biggest stumbling blocks for those who we are trying to lead to Christ. At Revival 09 we talked a lot about Satan’s team and how he uses the world and it’s media to create separation from God. We talked in depth about the movies, TV shows, internet and music that we watch and listen to that are made by people who hate God. Unfortunately Satan manipulates us to compromise our alliance with God by convincing us that it’s not a big deal. Would a Christian give his or her time and or money to someone who detests the Lord God? Christians are compromising their faith in God to a enemy that is trying to kill that faith. It is a big deal when we support these men who hate our Lord by watching, listening and even support financially by purchasing. I pray that we are continuing to stand firm for the Lord by not compromising even if we think that it doesn’t affect us personally. Because it already has!

Psalm 26:2-5 2 Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; 3 for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth. 4 I do not sit with deceitful men, nor do I consort with hypocrites; 5 I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked.

  75. josh senger says:

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
the spirit is always with me and always there to guide me. no matter what is going on each day the spirit is there guiding me and has a watchful eye on me all the time. this encourages me to fight sin even harder because there is nothing that i do that God does not see. he sees my every sin and it will be put out in the open one day when i am judged before Him
