Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
6:1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5 And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
6 On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles
12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude
17 And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.
The Beatitudes
20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
22 “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry.
“Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Build Your House on the Rock
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” (ESV)

27 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.”
I remember reading SOTD in 1 & 2 Samuel, David showed great example of his love to his enemies. People who tried to kill him like Saul. He cried after one of them died who I think it was Saul, David actually wished that he would die instead of his enemy. We should not seek revenge on people too, even if they done wrong to you, but we should do what is right by not getting in a fight or arguments. Another example is when David could have killed Saul, but he did not seek revenge on someone who wanted to kill him.
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
this is probably my favorite verse!! There has been so many times that i have accused others of doing things wrong or sinning, when i have also been doing the wrong thing. We need to examine ourself first before we call other people out on the wrong things they are doing.
Wow it is so hard for us not to comment on basically every verse in this chapter because they all are so rich with meaning!
27″But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
These verses are something that we both are going to work on. It is so difficult to love those who are so mean or rude to us because they give us no reason to be kind to them. But from this verse we know that we are commanded to love those who hate or mistreat us. We should pray for them and also pray for our hearts and actions to be right in the eyes of God. God will help us love those who curse and persecute us and he will give us the strength to go through the difficult hurddles in life. We are so blessed as christians that when we face challanges in life we go through them with Christ by our side helping us every step of the way and comforting us when we need it. Our God is an awesome God who deserves so much more praise and glory than we give Him! So let us glorify and obey him by loving our enemies and praying for those who treat us wrongly.
20Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
24″But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
Verses 20 and 24 are direct opposites of each other. Many of us in Orange County are in the boat of verse 24, “rich.” We have all of our wants met and most of our needs met, too. When we have so much on earth it is difficult to see a need for God. Those who are poor on earth are often humble and have contrite hearts and recognize their need for God. We must learn to not rely on our earthly comforts and make them our gods, because they will all pass away. Being rich on earth seems like a blessing, but it is actually not. Only those who are poor in spirit and beat down the pride in their hearts are humble enough to hear God’s call and turn to him in repentance and faith.
46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Clearly, Jesus is telling the people that he expects them to not only listen to his teaching but to put it into practice. He is saying, we have no buisness calling ourselves his disciple (i.e. Christian), if we are not doing what he has told us to do. “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31). As we hear from God’s word today let’s have a mindset of a doer of the word. How are we going to apply today’s teaching to our lives and put it into practice?
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
This is my favorite verse in Luke 6! And amen to what Dan The Man said! God is saying that we should not be calling ourselves a Christian if we are not doing what he says or obeying his commands. We need to be applying what the Lord tells us to do, and to actually DO IT. Pleasing God and doing the things that are glorifying to him is what we should be doing actively.
41″Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Theses verses really stood out to me, it is so easy for us to see what other people are doing wrong instead of noticing if we do it ourselves.
O my goodness gracious! what a great passage, it makes me excited hah:]
Anyways i pretty much want to comment on every verse in this chapter….
27″But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
31Do to others as you would have them do to you.
These verses are some great ones to memorize, because at one point or another we may need a reminder to hold our tongues and be kind to someone who is rude to us. THese verses clearly explain we need to be loving to everyone even the hateful people we will run into…and truth be told that is not always easy to do! But just remember we will be rewarded!
41″Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
I have always enjoyed this analogy, it reminds me of a verse i commented on yesterday…Anywho, this verse is so right, how often do you come across someone who judges you or others and totally fails to see they are making the same mistake themselves?! It’s just a great reminder to do a self check before you go and tell someone else they are at wrong. Great comment Katie i agree…most of the time we fail to see the wrong in us, but we have no problem picking out someone else’s faults.
43″No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
44Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
I know in small groups we have talked about this before…since we are christians we need to be bearing good fruit, if we claim to be a christian yet we are not trying to stop sinning then we are being contradictory. It is important for people to see our love for Christ and us bearing good deeds
45The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
You can tell a lot about what is in someones heart by the way they speak or act…When you are filled with God’s joy you can not help but it pouring out of your mouth and spirit. In small groups we talked about checking our hearts and making sure that joy is genuine and not fake.
Okay im done now, woo hoo i got my name right the first time today!!!;]
O and i must add that i love Vanessa and Nicole’s comment on verses 27 and 28..you guys did a great job of wording your opinion and i agree 100%!!! Awesome job girlies:D
I agree with Katie, a lot of time we only notice what others are doing wrong. We should change how we act before we try to help others.
49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
This is the foundation to living a Christian life and a life pleasing to God!! There are so many people who call themselves christians, yet fail to apply what they learn in church. Like it says earlier (about the plank your eye and speck in others eyes), they seem to be really good at pointing out others who need to apply the message but they fail to realize that they need to DO IT that much more! As John the Baptist says “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance!” We need be studying, learning, and drawing closer to God, while DOING what He commands us to do. If we are just hearers of the word but not doers, we have failed, we will collapse when the storms of this world come after us. We wont have a strong foundation in our faith if we do not do and apply what we learn!
I loved todays passage, it thought it was AMAZING!!!
28 bless those who curse you , pray for those who mistreat you.
This verse means a lot because I don’t know how many times I have not cared about some of the people that tend to hate on me or be rude. Its not that I wish bad on them just that I don’t think about them to try and help them. To actually pray for them to come to a better path and realize there cruelty. Because to be a christian means to love everyone and bring everyone to the right path towards god.We need to remember to forgive just as god has already forgiven us!
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
I love this verse because the meaning is so true. How many times do we feel ok to judge others or tell them there faults when we don’t comment are own or realize that we our selves have down wrong. This shows how we need to cleans our selves and bring our selves to god before ever speaking to others about there problems or faults.
that was savannah she forgot to change the name
27 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
These verses are great – we should strive to love those who ridicule or mistreat us instead of hating them. It’s no good to harden our hearts against them. Instead we should be reaching out to people like that, because they are the ones who need the most help.
27 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate
28 you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Wow I loved this chapter. This chapter inspired me to be a better person. I love this verse because it is something I need to constantly think about in life. In everyones life their is someone that isn’t nice to us or doesn’t want the best for us, but we as humans usually think that we should not want the best for them. I think about the saying my mom used to say to me all the time when I was little, ” Megan two wrongs don’t make a right ” We as christians should help our enemies because we can learn from them just as they can learn from us. They are the ones that need help or maybe just someone to talk to. We need to be the bigger person in the situation.
:) hope everyone had a great weekend!
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
It is very easy, like other people have already said, to see what other people are doing wrong and ignore that you are doing the same (or worse) things. This verse encourages me to constantly check my heart to make sure that I am really obeying Christ and not just saying it and being hypocritical. It helps to have someone to keep us accountable. And when we are living like this, truly following and obeying Christ, our hearts will be right for encouraging others and pointing out to them what they need to work on. So when I see myself having a hardened heart about something, I need to immediately repent of it and turn to God, because it wont only affect me, as I will be in no state to encourage others on what to do.
I agree with Christopher. We all look at what others are doing wrong but not at what we do wrong ourselves. We should focus more on what we are doing wrong and not what is wrong with others.
Wow!! There is SO much in this chapter! It’s awesome!
22Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
23″Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
Once you become treated exactly the way it describes in verse 22, you know you’re doing something right. It maybe harsh and terrible, but that shouldn’t stop us from telling other’s about Christ– completeing our mission (Luke 24:46-53)! God promises our reward is in Heaven! What a motivation!
32″If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them.
33And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that.
34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full.
This is so convicting to me! When we go to church, it’s really easy and comfortable to stay in our “group” and only hang out with the people we know. It can be hard sometimes to step out of our comfort zone. But God’s Word is saying, what good is it to just love those who love us back? Or to do good to those who do good to us? There is no good in it! This reminded me of Luke 5, yesterday, and how Jesus ate with the tax collectors. Can you imagine if Jesus JUST loved the good/righteous people? Or just did good to those people? We need to challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort bubbles and follow Jesus’s example.
Ok, I can’t resist commenting on this verse. Like others have said, this is a GREAT verse! I love how it describes the sizes of the things in our “brother’s” eye and our own: the “speck of sawdust” compared to a “plank”! Obviously, before we go out and point our finger at someone else’s wrongs, we should evaluate our own first because they could be so much larger!
22Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
I have seen this all too many times, it hurts but we have to be all for Jesus or not at all. I pray all choose to be all for him.
PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
*****I want to apologize to all true North goers, Teen ministers, God and anyone else i missed because i have been really busy and have selfishly put God’s word aside to give me more time with my life and my homework and well being. It is one of my faults and i am trying to conquer it, but the other day i was thinking and talking with Jeff Modugno, and realized my excuses were needing to end. I also realized that only through God will i be able to not screw up. I pray he makes me make time in my busy schedule. I will be on SOTD every day. I WILL make time. Thank You!!!
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
LOVE THIS VERSE. The illustration is pretty funny, Jesus is sooo cool. hahaha
49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
This reminds me of a song i learned when i was like 5 years old, “The wise man built his house upon the rock, The wise man built his house upon the rock, And the rains came a tumblin’ down…..” hahahaha scary.
22Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
this verse basicall says happy are we when we get persecuted. usually when someone gets made fun of or mocked, they get depressed or upset. but as Christians, when we are pesecuted, its because we are carrying the name of the Lord, and some people dont believe what we are preaching is true. we should not be sad though, because though we are being persecuted in the name of Christ, people will repent, as we learned this weekend in the sermon. we always need to persevere in the name of Christ, and when we are persecuted, its because the Lord is working!
Amazing chapter!!!
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
I know alot of people have already commented on this but it really stood out to me too :) It’s so true that sometimes we’ll find the same faults in other people, befor we’ll even check ourselves… Good reminder!
43″No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
I agree with Ashlyn on this.. We have talked about this alot in smallgroups and how as Christians we should be bearing good fruit all the time… it’s a good way to evaluate our walk with Christ. Not that good fruit makes a Christian but it definantly shows…
42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
I like this verse because i can see myself accusing someone of sinning when i myself have been wrong all along
35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
What a great chapter in the bible, one of the biggest sermons ever given by Jesus Christ Himself! This verse is so interesting and for some hard to comprehend. Love your enemies? What a bizarre thing to say, but so true! God calls us to do it… So lets do it!
46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
this is a very good verse that may apply to us, we shouldnt be calling our selves christians if we are not doing what the lord says and putting it into practice. weshould be always be applying everything we learn to our lives bringing glory to god!!
luke 6″27″But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
I really liked this whole chapter because it shows you that you need to be respectful and loving because god forgives all and we should forgive those who dont like us or even hate us. Dont go for revenge because it always leads to the worst consequences you can possibly have. because that is a bad scenerio you don’t want to be in. This verse really inspires me to forgive my brother and to be a brother that needs to be looked up to.
47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
As we read through Luke we should make it a goal to be doing the word and not just reading it. Each day we should live and model our lives on what Jesus says. As it explains in these verses we will be like a man who builds his house upon the rock of foundation.
22Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
This is a great verse it encourages me when times are hard. So lets boldly proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord. EVERYWHERE!!!!!!! and be hated.
10He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored.
Now, how cool would that be to see that! I mean, my imagination just went insane when I read this verse! Seriously, did he just stretch over his arm and it was a perfect hand in an instant? Did it gradually grow and then was perfect? Did He wave His hand over it and as He was waving, it became normal? Seriously guys, our God is awesome, and what is the reaction of the pharisees? They were angry with Him! How could they be angry with a God that has the power to destroy them in less than a second? God is mighty and powerful and let us not forget the fear of the Lord!
22Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
And of course, I’m lov’n this verse. I get this everyday from people and I know that one day, I will see God in Heaven and He will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” So lets not stop evangelizing at our schools or wherever we go because we know that it builds up rewards in Heaven like it says in verse 23. And like what Bobby said today in His sermon, God never breaks a promise. :D
12One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
This verse is so inspiring. If God Himself in human flesh (Jesus) took time out of his INCREDIBLY busy schedule to not only pray, but to spend the entire night praying to God (no matter how tired he was), we certainly never have an excuse to neglect prayer time. If the Son of God needed time with God (and he was sinless), how could anyone ever think that they don’t need to spend time with God the Father?
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.
Oh these verses just make me really sad. It’s knowing that so many people think they know what it is to be a “Christian” but they have no clue at all. I love to quote this verse and especially bring it up in regards to any type of sin a “Christian” might be displaying in their life. We have to realize that being a Christian is much more than just saying we are a Christian. We need to be DOING as a Christian, or doers of the Word as Bobby liked to put it. If we aren’t practicing Christians (meaning we are praying, reading the Bible, living out God’s commandments) then it is time for a real hard reexamination. Let’s make sure we fall under verse 47 and not verse 46. Let’s be Doers of Christ!
46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
I agree with Matt and everyone else who posted on this verse. If we claim to follow Christ, we need to show it through our words, thoughts, and lifestyle. If we cannot prove with our life that we are following Christ, we need to examine if we really are following HIm at all.
22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
God promises us that we are going to be moched, excluded, judged andd so much more by nonchristians but as he says in the next verse, he also promises that we will be rewarded when we get to heaven. Therefore, DO NOT fear man!!
Okay this chapter is so packed with wisdom, truth, promises, and encouragement it is impossible to know where to begin… I am like Ashlynn, I want to comment on everything! (but I would literally be here all night). I will suffice it to say that I am sooooo grateful to God for providing us with His Holy Word for us to know Him, and with every answer and encouragement we will ever need in life.
But there is a catch…..and several astute True Northians have emphasized this important truth:”"46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” We must actually be DOING what Gods word says.
Great posts everyone….
This chapter is loaded with life lessons… Jesus taught what must have seemed so counter cultural yet so appropriate, even for today. Sure enough we are called morons, idiots just to name a couple for believing that the bible is the written word of God. So young people when you are in your high schools settings and find yourself being persecuted for following Christ remember what pastor Bobby said today that you have the triune God behind you. Also focus on Philippians 4:8-12.
I know it is really hard to pray for someone that shows hatred and intolerance towards us, but that is what Christ commanded us to do.
Also let’s be careful not to judge people so that we can honor the body of Christ and be great ambassadors for true north. See you Friday night.
5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
Another game of stump Jesus. Too bad you can’t win that game.
These pharisees are just plain mean to Jesus. They know He’s who He is but they don’t want to submit to Him. They think they are righteouss. We are all sinners, thats why Christ went down to earth to die for us. We cannot do it on our own.
i am praying that God will keep you on the right path and to keep posting on scripture of the day Alec =)
This was such an awesome chapter! Vs. 43 really stood out to me though because it shows how we are saved by faith, but show it through works.
34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full.
This chapter is packed with great verses…I like this verse cause it is VERY applicable to the 21 Century. I literally hate someone needs money and a “friend” lends them the money and demands repayment the next day. They should graciously give them the money no strings attatched. Even non-christians lend money expecting to be paid back lets set the example and give when what we can to those in need!
22Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
I found this verse very encouraging because God looks upon us pleased when he sees that we are persecuted for carrying out his mission.
27″But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
29If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic.
30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
These verses to me were pretty convicting because its not everyday that we show this incredible amount of love. Not only is loving your enemies obeying God’s command but it also sets us aside and makes us different from non-christians. This takes much love, generosity, kindness, and goodness.
45The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
I absolutley loved this verse! Our words and the way we act resemble our heart, because our heart speaks for us.
mmmm…..why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you?
This reminds me of when God talks about many coming before him on the last day and saying Lord Lord didn’t we prophesy and cast out demons in your name and he will say away from me I never knew you. Just because we say we know God doesn’t mean he is truly our Lord and master, we have to be following his will.
46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Don’t just say you believe in Jesus, do what he says!
i dont think there is one verse in this chapter that is my favorite because i LOVE it all. i just love the whole message that is being portrayed. i love the fact that jesus is saying to love your enimies even though they might not love you back.
31 do to others as you would have them do to you
i have heard this verse probably since 1st grade and i think that we all need to think about this before we do or say something because we regret things we say and things we do to others and this is the reason why. if we thought about what we are going to say to poeple before we say it, every single time, we would get into so much less trouble and we would have a little less stress on our shoulders.
i also love the analogy he uses toward the end of the chapter. the one about the sawdust in his brothers eye and the plank in his own eye because it shows how much we try to see in this world when we really need to just take a step back and realize that we need to get ourselves together first.
:)
45The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
The things that come out of our mouths are the things that are important to us. We take the time to talk about what matters most in our lives. According to this verse, it is a good indication of the nature of our hearts. If we are good (bearing good fruit-evidence of salvation), good things should be coming out of our mouths. These good things could include encouraging a friend to read the bible, sharing the gospel with our friends, sharing what we are learning, or how God has changed us. We should have the word of Christ so imbedded in our hearts that it overflows into our everyday conversations.
WOW AMAZING!!! this chapter is one of my absolute favorites! verses 20-37 are amazing.
22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
i absolutely loved what janae said! we are promised a life with mockery and hard times. But we are also promised eternal life and salvation in the end, which, to me, makes it all worth it! we need to get out of our cofort zone, and NOT FEAR MAN!
37″Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
everytime i read this verse, i am filled with joy, and comfort. it is telling us, that we need to not judge, not condem, and to forgive right? all great things that we should already be doing as chrstians and followers of chirst. the greatest part is, when we do this we recieve it back! that is such a comforting thought. i would love to be forgiven, not condemned and not judged (:
46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
this verse also caught my attention. we need to not only be listening to what our heavenly father has to say, we need to be DOING IT!! that is the most important part. that is what people see, that is our fruit, that is what furthers our sanctification and our walk with christ. it is so important you guys to be living our lives 100% 24/7 for god!
i loved what summer said about his last analogy about the sawdust and the plank. we need to take a step back and examine ourselves before we can look at others. people see the faults in others so quickly. god tells us to find our own faults first, and then when we are perfect, which we never are, we can then go and clearly pick out the peice of sawdust in our neighbors eye.
(:
46″Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Jesus said “…if you love me, obey my commands…”
Is anyone else tired of hearing people profess to be Christians and seeing that they live no different than most sinners??? We need to check ourselves and make sure that there is no patterns of sin in our own lives. I don’t want to be the one that Jesus is talking to in verse 46. I want to make sure that I am always doing what he says. I also want to make sure that my brothers and sisters in Christ are doing what he says so that they can truly call Him Lord, Lord. We need to all make sure that we are obeying and making sure that all who profess the Lords name are obeying as well so that we can stand before him confidently pronouncing ‘Lord, Lord’!!
This chapter is full of spiritual food!!!!
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
This is a good verse. Has someone ever wronged you? Mabey it was your brother or sister or someone at school or an enemy. We need to be able to forgive these people even if they are our enemy.
This verse changed my perspective on the way I am living today. My sister always takes my stuff without asking. It has come to the point that I dont want her to even borrow my stuff even when she does ask. I need to not only let her borrow my stuff, but I need to be willing to forgive her if she loses, breaks, or doesnt return my item. God forgave me of my wretched sins…….why cant I have the same attitude?
45The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
put God’s word deep in your heart, so that you may always remember it always, for if you store up treasures in heaven, God will pay you in full. in contrast, if you tell everyone of your good deeds, your reward is the cheers of the people.
