How Shall We Sing the Lord‘s Song?
137:1 By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willows there
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors
required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How shall we sing the Lord‘s song
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget its skill!
6 Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
above my highest joy!
7 Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites
the day of Jerusalem,
how they said, “Lay it bare, lay it bare,
down to its foundations!”
8 O daughter of Babylon, doomed to be destroyed,
blessed shall he be who repays you
with what you have done to us!
9 Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones
and dashes them against the rock!
Give Thanks to the Lord
Of David.
138:1 I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise;
2 I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.
3 On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.
4 All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth,
5 and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.
6 For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
but the haughty he knows from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands. (ESV)

Ps 138:8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
There is hope in Christ’s faithfulness: always fulfilling His perfect purpose for us. And always in His timing, not ours… Lord, please come soon!
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
this sets my mind on heaven and how we are going to get to worship and praise god forever!!!! I already think that worship and praising God is great here on earth, but thinking that in heaven its going to be intense and so much more awesome than here! The Lord is so amazing and I am excited to one day be worshipping God for eternity with everyone else!
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
The psalmist writes that he called upon the LORD, and the LORD answered him back. He was made bold and brave. By nature, everyone is weak. There is not one who is capable of doing anything good, for everyone has turned away from God to live for themselves. However, despite our weakness, God is strong. He is omnipotent (all-powerful) as He holds power over all of the earth and reigns as Sovereign LORD. He answers those who call out to him. And this is what everyone should do, asking God for strength knowing that they are weak. And God will make His people strong; they will be made bold and courageous to stand for Him. I need to thank God that He answers me when I call out to Him. And I need to always seek Him and never rely on my own strength. Having the strength He has given me, I need to make a bold and courageous stand against this world. I need to be radically different here on this earth as I stand as His representative witnessing to those around me.
ELLO… I read
I like verse 4,”How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?”
I like this verse because it is telling us what not to do. These people think that since they had their land taken away everything is lost and they can’t praise the LORD. This is the exact opposite of what we should be doing we should be worshiping the LORD at all times no matter where we are or what kind of situation we are in.
CYA
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
It would probably be offensive to be praising God in front of people who were praising their “gods”….but think of how bold you must be to do it annnnd you’re showing them that your faith is strong! Your faith is untouchable and nothing can keep you from praising the God of the universe…this verse reminded me of the missionairies in China, or ,what Pastor Bent said this weekend, Egypt. There are sooooo many people who don’t know the Gospel, who are wasting their time worshipping idols….AND NOT JUST OVER THERE! Now, I asked God to give me an opportunity to talk to people about Christ last week and that is when Mormons approached me in my apartment complex..that was exciting! :D I need more evanglism action in my life…note to self: There will always be a field to harvest from at my school….take advantage of it. :)
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
This verse really touched me. We all as Christians have a purpose, but it may not be in the way we intended. God has a plan for us, to use us in a way that will be beneficial to others. The path chosen for us by God may not be the easiest, but because God chose it, it is the right and perfect path.
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
i need to work on putting God first in my life before idols such as money. i also need to work on praising God more and bringing glory to him.
“When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.”
When we call upon the Lord, whether through worship, reading his Word, or praying to him, he makes us bold for the Gospel and to fight against sin! This encourages me to have a stronger desire to read his Word and cry out to God in prayer to help me overcome the sin that “so easily entangles”. God give me a stronger desire this week and the weeks to come to be in your Word, studying it and applying it to my life!
Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
We have nothing to be “proud” about really. Every good thing we have and every good thing we have accomplished is a gift from God. As Paul wrote, we can only boast in the Lord. As long as we’re aware of our own lowly state, this psalm says that God will look upon us.
Goodmorning . . .
I read . . .
Psalm 137 & 138 . . .
“7. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.”
This is comforting news to know that my Father will keep me and preserve me in the toughest times. He won’t let evil get the best of me, but instead hold onto me. Yes, this world is ruled by Satan and filled with evil and temptation. However, my Lord will keep His tight hand on me and fight against the evil that is thrown at me. With His right hand, He’ll protect me and be my shield against all the wicked people in the world. How can this verse NOT be comforting news? To hear that no matter where I’ll be, my Father will be right beside me, protecting me from any harm around me.
Along with this specific verse, the WHOLE ENTIRE chapter was really convicting. I pray that I would apply my life to it, in the fact that I will PRAISE MY LORD 24/7. Also that I would bow down to His holy temple and that everyone else would PRAISE you and give you all the glory.
Another verse that caught my attention was, “6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.”
Meaning: All the meek and modest people in the world, God will gaze His eyes upon them. Where as all the prideful and arogant people, He’ll keep His distance from. That’s encouraging to hear if you are a modest child of God. If one is proud of one’s self, then God will not take the time to look upon you. I pray that I’m the lowly person.

6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
Love the contrast in this verse. Even though God rules on high, he is with those who are low. And that is a powerful and applicational truth: God wants us to be humble. This should be one of the most basic virtues for Christians because we should know how holy God is and how sinful we are. However, this is often very hard because we are so prone to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to.
Thinking about humility instantly made me think of two things this morning.
1) Am I showing my humility by calling out and expressing my need to God?
2) Am I showing my humility by being teachable and receiving correction from other people?
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
I will praise him forever. I love the book of Psalms, its all about praising.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
God is faithful, just as it says in Hebrews 10, and He will fulfill His purposes and plans for me, for you and for all of creation! He is working through ALL things, the good and bad, to accomplish His finish the redemptive story. I love the precious promise of Romans 8:28 and that He is working EVERYTHING together for my good and His glory, and oh how I long for the day that my faith shall be sight!!
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
I really like this verse because it reminds me that sometimes I put other “gods/idols” before God. I need to go with God and get rid of all other earthly things. He is the ONE and ONLY way to go and I don’t want to be distracted by earthly things when I could live my life for Christ, praising and glorifying His name. :]
***MARANTHA!!!***
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
that is so cool that the Lord’s love endures for ever. God is so good to me and I just need to rembemer to thank him for all he is doing. I love serving a God that will last forever. that makes me want to strive to be like him holy.
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
I found so much comfort in this verse this morning. Sometimes God seems so far but this verse is saying that even though he is in heaven and he is exalted above all things he still sees those who are humble before him and is near to them. But those who are proud and selfish he is separate from. He knows all but he is not concerned with them. Each day I arise I can choose to focus on myself and my problems or to humble myself before a holy God acknowledging that this life isn’t about me it is about bringing God glory and being faithful in what he gas given me today.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
This is an encouraging verse. The Lord will always be there to protect us from the temptations and evil of this world. Although there may be hard times were we feel that He is not with us at the time we should refrain from taking things into our own hands. I need to make sure to rely on the Lord whole heartedly and not take things into my own hands.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
PRAISE THE LORD!! The Lord is exalted above all things!! Reminds me of David’s song that we sang this past weekend!! That second part of the verse immediately made me think about the kids at my school as well. Even though many at this special school of Aliso Niguel look down upon christianity, they still recognize that we worship a God and that we read His word. God and His word has endured for centuries and never fails. His love endures forever. :D
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
While other people praise, prioritize, value, and love the things of this world (their gods), I want to be known for praising the one True God. That means I can’t let what other people think and value influence me. I love how Joshua put it in Joshua 24:15:
“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
As for me and my household (The Lauder’s), we will serve the LORD!!!
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
As Christians, we rejoice in God’s grace because it meant coming down from a perfect place, heaven, and saving us lowly sinners. Even though I am so low compared to the Lord, I make completely selfish and proud statements about myself and my accomplishments. God sees through all of that, all he sees is my heart (1 Sam. 16:7). I need to stop trying to trust in myself and my abilities and continue trusting in God and his awesome abilities- as demonstrated in my salvation.
Psalm 137
This psalm was written after the babylonians took over jerusalem, and by one of the imprisoned people.
The psalmist says that they try to make the prisoners sing songs of joy, but they refuse, “hanging their harps”, for “How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?”
They miss jerusalem, and they condemn the babylonians and those who support them–the ‘edomites’. The psalmist then goes on to say that the babylonians are “doomed to destruction”, which, oddly enough, happens a few years later.
Psalm 138
The psalmist praises the name of the lord before the ‘gods’ of the people, and then goes on to hope that “all the kings of the earth” will praise him as well. He exclaims the Lord’s faithfulness and love, using his life experiences as a testimony.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
I agree with all you that God is faithful as you can tell when it says he will fulfill it! God has a purpose for me. Reminds me of Christ telling Peter that they will crucify him and they will do the same to you. (Peter)
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
This is kinda cool. I just thought that this verse was comforting. Though life sometimes seems really difficult and troubling, we always know that GOD will pull us through. He is able to do anything.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
God has a plan for my life and it is the best path I could ever hope to take. He loves me and He will watch out for me no matter where I am. As long as I remain in Him and follow His commands, He will take care of me. I need to be subject to His every will. Instead of fearing men I should fear God for what He can do to punish me.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
I love this verse because 2 promises really stick out to me…
1) God has a specific purpose for those who are saved
2) He WILL carry this out!
So, I can have complete trust in the Lord that He has a perfect plan for my life and whatever comes is all part of it. Nothing bad that happens is a mistake but working together with other things for good!! And, this is just so comforting! Thank you Lord!
137:
4 How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?
These are some good verses by the psalmist. At first they confused me but after reading them a few times, I got this: first, in verse 4, if we are surrounding or associating ourselves with the world, like things/people that would tempt us or become idols, we will conform to those ways and try to see how close we could bet to ‘the line’ between us and the world. Like it says in 1 Corinthians 15:33 “bad company corrupts good character.” I pray that I would always be surrounding my self with my christian brothers and sisters and to stay completely away from ‘the line’ and to not conform into what the world wants teenagers to do. I want to live with no compromise.
Just a little note, I like how in chapter 137, the psalmist writes in verse 4 “How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?” and in chapter 138, they write in verse 1 “I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.” It’s awesome how, even though these people are in a foreign land being held captive (137:3) and they are still praising and worshipping God. That is so awesome!
6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.
This verse is so encouraging to me to think that i would rather not be able to speak ever again or eat if i ever not consider jerusalem my highest joy. To say that i would rather die then ever forget something so perfect and holy as that.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
As I was reading this, one thing I noticed is what this verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say that as Christians we will never walk through trouble; that once you become a Christain your life will be easy and free of foes. The promise given in this verse is so much better than that! No matter where I walk in this life, God is my protector! The all-powerful, all-knowing God is my protector! Why do I allow myself to ever be afraid of things here on earth, when I can rely on the protection of my God?
Psalm 137:
6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.
I believe this was said during Israel’s exile from Jerusalem. They were stuck in Babylon, and if I remember correctly from Revival 09, Pastor Mike said Babylon is another way of saying the world. All of us who are Christians are in the same position—we’re away from our true home in heaven and long deeply for it. I want to remember always my true home in heaven…and if not may my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth.
Psalm 138:
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
Also I want to give God the praise for all things! God is good! His love endures forever!
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
I like this verse because it tells us to worship the Lord because of his love and His faithfulness. It also reminds us that the Lord’s name is above everything else in existance and that nothing at all should come before worshiping the Lord.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
this verse is so encouraging! the Lord will fulfill all of His promises to us. we need to have faith in God; that He will fulfill the things which He says He will. we need to have faith like the psalmist here does. and the will never abandon the works of His hands, as so many passages in Scripture teach. once we are saved, we will always be saved (some passage like Philippians 1:6, John 10:28, Romans 8:37-38). i need to live my life trusting fully in this, and live in the hope that i have from God. He is good!!!
Psalm 138
1 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
What a great example of obedience. This verse reminds us of how we need to surrender ourselves 100% to God and serve him in every way we can. We worship God and worship him because of our faith in him. It is through our obedience and faith that we can be assured 100% that we have a home with him in heaven. Such excellent chapters!
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
This verse stood out to me because it points out that God saves the humble, but the proud are far from Him. It is ironic that pride is exalted by our culture when God detests it. God hates few things, but pride is sure one of them. To become a Christian one must humbly come before the Lord, confess his sin and acknowledge that the Lord is great and he is not. That is a hard thing to do when society tells you that you must be the top dog, and everything is all about you. Lord, I desire to be humble, like Jesus, and to fight the pride in my heart. Please help me to fight the sin of pride when it creeps in and remember that You hate pride!
Psalms 138
In this psalms, the psalmist gives a point, then backs up the point. Just as in English where we give a point/topic sentence, and use concrete detail and commentary to back it up.
The point the psalmist is making is found in verse 1-2: I will praise you, O LORD, will all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name.
That’s pretty sick, this psalmist has the right mindset of praising the LORD.
But this brings up some questions:
1) How does he praise the LORD?
2) Why does he praise the LORD?
Now for the answers(:
1) How does he praise the LORD?
Look at verse 1 again. It says ” I will praise you, O LORD, WITH ALL MY HEART” When we live our lives we should strive for holiness and perfection to please God with all our heart.
2) Why does he praise the LORD?
Check out verses 2 and 3:
-For God’s love
-For God’s faithfulness
-For God has exalted above all things
-For God’s name and God’s word
God Bless!!
Hey I have a random question I was wondering if anyone could answer…
Why is Melchizedek’s priestly reign everlasting (Hebrews 7:3)?
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me.
The first part of this verse really stood out to me tonight. This is because it was a perfect reminder that God does indeed have a purpose for me here on earth! It’s easy to start worrying about your future and what’s in it, but then we have to sit back and remind ourselves that God is in control. I know that he has me where I am for a very specific reason. And even if I don’t know what that reason is, I still trust him!
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
God is so awesome and is above all things! He has exalted his name and word above all things! I need to be worshipping and praising him all day for how great he is and what he has done for me, by sending his Son so I may be with him forever! Just like God exalts his name and word above all things, that is where I need to put them in my life! God and his word, need to be number 1 in my life! I need to be in his word daily to be reading and meditating and applying the words of the most high, holy, and ONLY God! MARANATHA!!!!!
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
His Love ENDURES FOREVER!!! God is just and impartial; He sees everyone as a sinner, not by their deeds necessarily or their status. These verses stood out to me because it reminds me how we will be judged for our sins heavily, and how he is all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-powerful.
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
Notice how they put Gods in quotations. There are no such things as Gods, but one God that we will worship and praise and bow down to one day. The very 1st of the 10 commandments was only worship one God. I think that it would be very bold for anyone to worship one God in a surrounding where everybody else is worshiping several Gods. Even when you know you will face persecution and anger towards you. I think all Christians should challenge themselves to see if they are ready to worship or preach the Gospel even if it were illegal or if people would rebuke you or persecute you. That would definitely please the Lord if you did.
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, O LORD, when they hear the words of your mouth.
5 May they sing of the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD is great.
These verses serve as a great prayer for us before we prepare to talk to others about God. It’s awesome to have the assurance that God hears us and answers us; that assurance should make us even more bold in our declarations of faith to other people. And I like how the psalmist here clearly understands that it’s God who moves the hearts of people–it’s not humans. Knowing that it’s God who does the work should, again, make us “stouthearted” in our witnessing to others. I’m praying that all of us at True North will be bright lights on our campuses this week!
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
Even in my troubled times, God is still there for me in my life and helps me out and saves me from people who are trying to persecute me. Even when it seems like it’s hopeless God is always with me to give me strength and life. :)
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
Really praying for this! It’s hard because as humans we try to take things into our own hands but God’s timing and purpose is perfect and He definitely knows best. Sometimes I think I know better but that doesn’t make sense. God loves me more than I can ever love myself so I know that I can trust in Him! I want to fulfill His purpose and plan that He has for me and not my own.
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
When I read this verse the first thing I thought is, “Am I willing to praise God before other ‘gods’?” Am I ready to praise God in front of people who don’t even believe he exists? I need to! God has done so much for me! He saved me from my sins. This is something I should be proclaiming from the rooftops. I want to praise God in front of my co-workers so that they know I serve an awesome God.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
I love how God has exalted His name and His Word above all things. He alone deserves to be honored like this; His holliness is unmatched! I also love how God answers prayer. So many times I have prayed for courage and boldness and God has faithfully answered me. I am so unworthy yet He grants my requests…I will have faith in Him!
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
After hearing “Jesus loves me” a billion times or so as a kid, that phrase sorta lost it’s value to me before i became a Christian. Man was i sadly mistaken. Just thinking about how much God loves me and is faithful to me just blows me away! I’m not perfect and yet God loves me anyways. He sent His only Son to die so that i wouldn’t have to burn in Hell forever!! He sticks by my side, even though i do still screw up sometimes. He’s always right there with me, no matter what. I was just listening to a reallt good song, and one line of lyrics really stuck out to me. It was talking about God’s love and faithfulness, like this verse. The lyric goes, “You’re the only one who knows me yet still loves completely.” And it’s true, God is the only one who knows everything about me, yet He still copmpletely loves me. I can’t even begin to express how amazing God’s love and faithfulness are! I am so truly thankful for it!!
8a The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever
Thank You, so much, Father–with all that I am–that You discipline me in Your love, with the intention of growing me to be more like You and using me to further Your kingdom. Thank You for pacifying me and still loving me in my futile and shameful attempts of wrestling and struggling with You. Thank You for the power of Your Holy Spirit that You have given me, and overtaken me with, so that the wrestling is short-lived and matchless for Your great power.
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
[stouthearted -> courageous or determined]
When we pray to God for boldness or “stoutheartedness,” he answers our prayers. We need to have a lot more confidence in prayer because if we did, we would pray more. Also, thank you so much God for listening to us always and never leaving us!
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
I love this verse! It is so important to be humble before the Lord and like this verse says bow down because he is so deserving! The Lord is so loving and faithful he deserves the highest honor, yet is so easy to sin against him. Lord I want to glorify and praise your name ALWAYS!
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
I really like this verse. Especially the first part. It excites me to know that God has a plan for me and will use me for His glory! I cant think of anything else I would rather do.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
So true Luke,
I like the verse because it reminds me that unlike everything of the world, God will always be there. No matter what the circumstance, He always has a way out for me, and a master plan at that.
The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands
Dear Lord, Thank you for this encouraging promise because today was a rough one. Please help me to trust in your goodness and faithfulness and to realize you are the one with the master plan.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
God is so faithful and loving! My soul desire should be to praise and worship him!!!
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
This verse is so encouraging!!!
God is constantly getting me out of bad situations, and reaching out his hand to protect me. Even when I go through persecutions for him, I know that I am serving him and growing in him, which makes it a good thing! There is no struggle too big for the LORD of the universe. These simple things I stress over are nothing compared to him. I need to stop worrying and stressing out all the time and just let God be in control. Trying to resist his perfect plan for my life or being hesitant is foolish! I know that whatever he has in mind will be the best for me!!
The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
This is sooo cool how God has a purpose for me and that it will be and is being fullfilled. this is sooo amazing for me because I don’t even want to know what I would be doing if I didn’t have Christ who gives me a purpose in this life. these verses just make me thank God
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
He is not afraid of the people that are angry at him because god is protecting him. Kind of like Matthew 10:28 he is not afraid of people that can hurt his body but cannot hurt his soul. Dude i wish i had no fear!
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
God really does answer prayers. If we pray for something and it is according to his will, he will provide us with it. For instance, ive been praying for more opportunities to evangelize on my campus and the Lord has really answered my prayer. I am continually getting in evangelism discussions all over my campus, Praise God! God is great and won’t abandon us, so we need to pray the him and let him know what we need. Just like Luke 11:9-12, ask and we shall receive.
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
This verse is very straight to the point and great. I will praise the Lord with all my heart, before the “gods”!!!!! Before any idols or “gods,” i will praise the Lord first and praise him with my whole heart.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
This is a great verse!! Though i go through many troubles and trials, the Lord preserves and protects my life. THe Lord protects me from the anger of my enemies and stretches out his hang to protect and guide me. With Gods hand he saves me from trouble. When i read this verse, it makes me wonder how and why i fear earthly things. Instead of fearing earthly things and what people will think of me, i should only fear the ONE who protects me! Matthew 10:28 God is to be feared and nothing else!
heyyaa!
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise. 2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.—I love chapter 138 all together! This reminds me that though I may have other things in my life that are here on earth and that are apart of my everyday life, I should be lifting up God way more than anything else on this earth! God does so much for me each day! I especially need to be considering the blood he gave on the cross and what I can be doing in my life that shows my fear for Him! This really spoke to me because even though I’m trying to get my grades and up and school is just stressful sometimes, I need to do everything for the glory of God and just exalt His name through everything! I need to show the LORD through my actions at school and at home so people may know what Jesus is all about!
MARANATHA!!
falll fesstt!! wahhooo….LIVING HERE ON EARTH WITH FEAR!!
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
The Lord has a plan for me. I am so thankful that i do not have to worry about where i’m going to go in life or what i am going to do, because it is in the hands of the Lord Almighty, and i can rest in that 100%
I read…
I liked verse 3… ” When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.” I loved this verse because it reminded me about how God is faithful and that whenever we come to Him, He will answer. It is awesome to know that God cares for us and that we are not just talking to a wall while praying. I want to be more like God in helping and encouraging others as the psalmist explains he does in this verse.
Thanks for the definition of stouthearted Kelly!
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
This is definitely how I want to be! Tonight as my family was driving to Yogurtland I saw some Mormons in the parking lot. When we got out of the car they said to my Christa, “We’re the missionaries in the neighborhood, bring the restored gospel…” Here were two guys claiming to be exactly what we were! This was not a time to back down but be bold and stouthearted for the Lord!
I am praying that I will be bold and stouthearted when it is time to stand for Christ! I need to pray to God for the words to say and speak them with confidence!
Small Groups this week!!!
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
This is so true that the Lord will fufill his purpose in my life! I was souly created for one thing and one thing only and that is to do the work that God has planned for me. But we all know that this isn’t easy, especially the part where our sinful flesh wants to give into things of this world. This week I have been really trying to keep denying myself and everything that I want and asking God to give me a desire to do what he wants and thats all. I need to keep focused on my job here and not go off and do my own thing.
4 How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?
i believe the question is how can we not sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? He is all we ultimately have to live for! He alone is the one who came to this “foreign land” and still remained perfect! He is our master and we are called to worship him all the days of our life! This verse helps to remind me how we are “aliens” here and how this is not our home; as we have talked much about this past summer. How we need to remain in Christ without compromise and how we need to dare to be different in every aspect of our lives! This includes music!!! Originally listening to secular music was a compromise i was making daily but am no longer praise the Lord now i love to listen to music that i know with 100% confidence is glorifying to God!

6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
ok. reading this I was thinking about something that has been on my mind a lot lately. That is the fact of how unholy, lowly, and unimportant we truly are compared to our amazing God. How can we even compare, the fact is we can’t. In light of that fact we need to be humble. The good news is God look favorably upon the humble. I pray that I would live a life of humility that is holy and pleasing to God.
4 How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?
In the same way that the Israelites did not feel at home in captivity, I need to remember that I cannot allow myself to feel at home here on earth. The Israelites were longing for their homeland once again, the place where they could truly sing for joy to the Lord. This same desire to be with Christ in heaven needs to be in the forefront of my mind on a constant basis! Instead of looking to this world to find satisfaction or happiness, I need to remember that everything here is going to burn one day soon, and strive to store up treasures in heaven. And while I can praise God here, as the Israelites cold in captivity, I can look forward with joy to the day that I will see Christ face to face and can worship Him as He deserves!
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me.
I’m loving how so many verses in the psalms are constant reminders of God’s faithfulness to protect and provide for us. He is our strength and our deliverer. It is these kind of verses that will spring to mind when life takes those turns and we sometimes forget to rely on God. But He will always be there, every step of the way with us!
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
I liked this verse because there are no uncertainties. It states that the LORD *will* not “might” or “probably will”. Sometimes I wonder whether I’m really following God’s will for my life; this often occurs when I start thinking about what I’m going to major in in college and that type of things because that will be a huge factor in where I’ll end up in life. I wonder whether He really wants me to do this or that or something completely different. This verse is comforting because it tells me that whatever God’s purpose for me is, it will be fulfilled. I shouldn’t be spending so much time dwelling on things, and instead should be watching intently for opportunities or situations that would lead my life in certain directions, and then evaluate whether or not that would be something that would be His will. In the end, His will *will* be done.
Psalm 138
3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
David here is praising God for His faithfulness in answering David when he was afflicted. God quickly answered David’s prayer to be strengthened in boldness and courage.
Isaiah 64:24 24 Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.
So often we ask God to strengthen us over temptation or maybe to make us more bold for the Gospel. We often ask god for these things without doing anything that needs to be done on our end. If we are not faithful in showing God that we are ready for these things than why should He answer our prayer. David proved himself to God thru his faithful actions which quite simply speak louder than words. We as Christians cannot just expect that God will automatically grant our prayers just because they are honorable. God answers prayer in His time and usually that time is when we are ready to receive that blessing. Holiness is not just given to us it is earned.
6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
I cannot be relying on myself or think I have anything to that makes me pleasing to the Lord apart from Christ. God is looking for a humble lowly attitude in my heart, not being puffed up or self-certain. It is sad to me that my pride brings a distance between me and the Lord. I am definitely encouraged to heed this Psalm and 1 Peter 5:6-7 and humble myself by not relying on myself but on God through prayer.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.
God always fulfills his purpose with everything!!! You can never seem empty minded when you ask God something because He always gives an answer, either right away or when the time is right. God’s love is always with us 24/7 and it feels good to be assured that He is always caring for us no matter what we do.
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me
God is so good! no matter what we are doing or what troubles we may have, God will always be there to catch us as we fall. the ending of this verse remiinds me about the sermon” sinners in the hand of an anger God” that bobby brought up in his message this weekend. even though we need to be fighting sin with the passion of trying to be holy like Christ was holy, God will still be there for those who are christians to catch us and save us from an eternity of doom from the sin that we have
I really like what brook said, about verse 2. I agree with her and this verse sets my mind on him.
1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
4,”How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?”
I liked this verse because even though they were in foreign lands doesnt mean you cant praise GOD! This is a reminder just because we aren’t at church doesn’t mean we can’t worship God dont be afraid to stand out in the foreign land.
