The Temptation of Jesus
4:1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.’”
9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,’
11 and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon
31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Jesus Heals Many
38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. (ESV)

32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
Wow, Imagine what it would be like to hear a message straight from Jesus!
This is something that i love about Compass: Pastor Mike, Pastor Lucas, and Pastor Bobby are not afraid to preach the Word with authority. Many kids are going to small groups where, if they are even taught the Bible at all, it is not taught in a way that demands their attentions or obedience. But we have the great blessing of pastors who are not willing to water down the message to attract more people but instead preach it boldly to us and tell us how we need to change. We need to make sure that we are not abusing such great teaching by taking it for granted, but that we are actually applying it and bringing others to hear it as well.
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
amen
well said Hilbon DOVIPER….
(why did that sound like a line from a Star Wrad movie?)
…Its early: i meant Star Wars movie.. :o)
(i wish i knew your realname)
i will post later when i am actually awake
41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
This verse i really interesting. Demons are coming out of possesed people and saying that Christ is the son of God. I remember in True North a while back we looked at a verse that said, “Even the demons believe, and shudder” or something along those lines. They know who He is, but Jesus tells them to shut up here in this verse. I think he did that because He wanted people to geniunely change, and not just be so scared or amazed that they follow Him. He is doing all these miracles and healing all these people, so I would think many people would follow Him just for a show. That’s why i think He did that. Nowadays, we stuff like this doesn’t happen. We can’t perform miracles. But that can be a good thing. Instead of making christianity a publicity show or faith-healing session, it’s about your relationship with God and the salvation He gives us.
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
while Jesus is being tempted, Satan offers him the world, and everything in it. of course Jesus is God so he knows that Satan is decieving him and that really Satan will lose the final battle and the Lord will triumph. but look at the magnitude of the situation. If we are tempted with anything, something we want REALLY bad, like a new car or a new house, or a full scholarship to an awesome college, would we turn it down if it was against Christ? we need to be constantly testing our faith and evaluating ourselves to see if we are on board. we are either hot or cold, because if we are a “lukewarm” Christian, God will spit us out. we need to be on fire for Christ, him being our number one priority, and then carry his name all across our schools!
32They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority
Good comment Mike, took the words right out of my mouth. Yeah I agree all the pastors at Compass teach the Bible with authority, they teach it how the Bible describes it. Many people have gotten saved in the past couple years including myself because we realized that we needed to repent and put our faith in Christ, which my old church I used to go to never even talked at all about repentance and I didn’t even know that word before coming to Compass. Yeah I would like to thank you Pastor Lucas, Bobby, and Mike for telling us with authority and way to salvation through Jesus Christ the Lord!
8.) Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
Nice comment Cameron…We cannot be serving two masters, as it says in Matthew 6:24, we must choose who we are going to serve. It says here in this verse that we must serve God only; which means that, as Cameron said, we as Christians need to be on fire for Christ and carrying out His commands and not living for the world.
3 times Jesus said “It is written…” to Satan. Lets remember that Jesus could have banished Satan with a thought, or the flick of his finger-but he didn’t!! He used SCRIPTURE to combat the ultimate evil force! We must remember the POWER that the WORD OF GOD has.
When asked, Charles Spurgeon once said: (loosely qouted) “I do not need to defend the Bible. Would you need to defend a lion? NO! Just let it out of it’s cage.” I am reminded and challenged once again to MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE. This is the most powerful tool we have when resisting temptation and evangelizing to the unsaved. We can think of the most clever things to say when witnessing to someone, but nothing is as effective as quoting scripture itself. Just take it from Jesus!!!
I found it very sad when the people of Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth rejected him. Imagine ALL of your friends and neighbors turning on you all at once and with near violence! Jesus was aware that it is common for a prophet to be rejected by those that are close to him. Maybe that is why it is so hard for us to evangelize to our own unsaved family members. Just like Jesus and the prophets, we are close to them and our families often reject us. It is also scary because we run the risk of losing them. The sad thing is; if we don’t reach them with message of ‘repentance and faith’ we will lose them for all of eternity. This greives my heart and spurs me on to pray for the unsaved in my life even more ferverently.
-Memorize Scripture
-Pray Feverently for the Unsaved
P.S. It was so great to se so many True Northians at Compass night last night soaking up the attributes of God! (and puting away tables and chairs in a flash!–Way to Serve Guys!!!)
37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
They hear and see the message and go to spread the news! Isn’t this what True North needs to resemble? If we are truly excited about our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, our news about him should spread quickly. This is another great reason of why we should be in the word every day. When we read the Word of God, it should excite us to the point of sharing it daily.
13When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Notice that Satan tempted Jesus throughout His life, not just here in the desert. And as followers of Jesus, we can expect to be tempted throughout our entire lives as well. Notice that Satan is strategic in his tempting. He tempts at the opportune time where he thinks we are the weakest…maybe when we are tired, busy, depressed, anxious, lonely, etc. As Christians we should be on the lookout for Satan in those times we know we are weak and recognize Satan’s temptation if we feel led to do something we know is wrong. Let’s follow the example of Jesus and replace whatever lies Satan is telling us with the truth of Scripture.
43 But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Jesus came to proclaim the good news to everyone. This is also why we are still here. As Pastor Bobbly loves to say, “this is why we are sucking oxygen!” The reason we are here to proclaim the gospel. We are to follow Christ’s example and preach the gospel to everyone we meet.
Great Comments Brett, Cameron, and Damato!!
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
Jesus’ discernment is awesome! Here he is, being tempted by satan, and satan is saying that he will give all the earth to Christ if He will simply bow down and worship him. And instead of just saying, I am actually the king of all of this and I created it and i own it and you have no power to “give” it to me, Jesus refutes him with Scripture! But what he said was even more profound. He says to worship and serve only God. We need to be giving 100% for Christ. We need to be doing all things for His glory! We have one master, one lord, one king, and one God!
First off, does anyone else really get a sense of Jesus’ wisdom and love from this passage? I just felt overwhelmed reading this passage on how Jesus was so wise and authoritative yet loving and personal. Jesus clearly shows who is in control in this chapter. I just thought how awesome it is to realize how powerful our personal Savior is!!
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’
In the first chapter containing Jesus’ adult ministry, He is already predicting His death! (We know that this verse references the people telling Jesus to save Himself while on the cross by using his power) It’s interesting how Jesus is already foreshadowing His death so early in his public teachings. He knows what is to come, how these people will turn against Him, yet he chooses to minister to them, heal them when the need it, and of course love them like no one else can. But more importantly, it shows that Jesus is focused on what He needs to accomplish while here on Earth. It is a powerful reminder that Jesus was here for one thing and one thing only: to save mankind by being the sinless sacrifice. Even though He had the power to avoid the cross, His love for us outweighed everything else and is a great culmination to the loving, serving ministry that starts in this chapter.
43But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
Jesus was sent to preach the good news and bring glory to God by paying the price we couldn’t pay. As Christians we are called to go out and make disciples. The only we way we can make disciples is by preaching God’s word to our friends, classmates, teamates, and everyone we can. Pastor Bobby encouraged us to Double it up by February 9th. We need to get excited and make the most of every oppurtunity that we have to share. Christ is coming again, so take every oppurtunity you have to share the gospel. It might be your last.
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
This verse is pretty straight forward….God can be the only one! No one else should be loved or praised more than God! Whatever their actions or words are it cannot compare to the love that comes from God, which surpasses all knowledge! (Ephesins 3:19) In Matthew 22:37 it remind us of the first command: to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul! We should love God with EVERYTHING that we are! so like everyone else said on this verse….we should be giving all that we are for Christ!
woops I meant Ephesians 3:19! :)
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
There is so much to say about this verse! Well, the Lord died on the cross for our sins…. he beared the sins of the world!!! The least we can do is to worship him and give up everything to follow Jesus Christ! We need to be living for God daily and serving him with our actions, words, and just our daily lives and how we act. Everything we say and do should be glorifying to the Lord! I seek to serve him, and I ask myself, “what can I do today so encourage others?” Or I think of how I can please God that day. He deserves everything and all our praise!
32They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
That was a really great comment Max. Jesus came so that we would have a relationship with him not just put on a show. This kind of reminds me of churches like Compass, where strong biblical teaching is preached, the very things that Jesus taught us and told us to tell others. Its apparent for a lot of people that churches like this are the place to be (like following Jesus was back in the day). These people are amazed-and they should be as they are hearing the truth. But the sad thing is that many of these people later left Him, because they were not in it for the reason of deny themselves and following Christ, but were in it for the experience or some other reason. We need to make sure that when we here authoritative, biblical teaching preached, that we correctly respond to it by changing in the ways we need to work on as well as following up on other people, to encourage them to make sure that they truly repent rather than come to church to have their ears scratched, but not do anything about it.
34″Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
35″Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
This is amazing what power jesus has
41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
Many people say they believe in Christ, or that they “Know” Him. If we are not truly Christians, God will turn his head from us and say “I do not know you. Begone”…or something like that. If we are not truly Christians, we will have greater punishment than those who have never heard God’s Word.
True North San Juan Hills!
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
we need to be serving God with absolute single-heartedness.
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
I love this line because it is such a bold statement. This statement is so true because Jesus died for us so we should, in return live for him everyday. We should live for God everyday and preach the word of the Lord so everyone knows that we should be living for him. I ask myself this question every time I don’t know how to handle a situation: What would Jesus do? I ask myself this because I want to make the right decisions and do the right things for God!
35″Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
I love this line because it shows how powerful Jesus can be
:)
Wow first let me say, Jesus had a lot of faith to not give into the devil and his tempting. Whenever i start to get tempted i will think of this and remember God will provide a way for me to avoid and overcome the devil’s tempting! Just like 1 Cor. 10:13 says…13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
I love that verse :D
Also i have enjoyed reading everyone’s comments on verse 8….
I agree with Vanessa, God is the only one and He should be the most praised and loved in our lives!
:]
Argg that is supposed to be Ashlyn Vidal!!!
2where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”
5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
6And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
7So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.
10For it is written: ” ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;
11they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
12Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
I love this verse. Okay to break it down, I htink it is very funny that the devil tempts Jesus with the whole of the earth before he tempts him with pride. This should show us how important and problematic our own pride can be.
I love what Amy wrote about the importance of memorizing scripture. That is so important in the moments you are tempted. We need to be training our minds to fight against temptation by meditating on the word and concentrating on things that are noble, just, pure, lovely, etc (Phil 4:8).
We need to fight against sin, and emulate Christ by not giving into temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man, God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
Jesus was hungry. That amazing. The God of the universe… was hungry. It’s wonderful to know that no temptation will ever face me that has not also tempted Jesus, and yet he never sinned. Even when he hadn’t eaten in 40 days he did not sin. I don’t know about you, but I struggle with having a terrible attitude if I miss one meal, let alone don’t eat for 40 days!
This is just a great passage period. Jesus has a verse from scripture for every answer. how cool would that be to have a scripture answer for every question asked u?
34″Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
It’s amazing that even a demon is able to identify Jesus as the “Holy One of God.” He also has to submit to Him.
Jesus used” God’s word” to fight temptation, we should learn from this and do as He does.
The Jr. High is beating us on SOTD……..Yesterday 4 JH “75″ people posted….come on guys!!!
iu love how, when Jesus is talking to the Devil, that he keepas mentioning “I
iu love how, when Jesus is talking to the Devil, that he keepas mentioning “I
woops haha sorry about that last comment i didnt mean to send it:p
but i really do like how Jesus keeps saying “it is written….” to the Devil showing that he is truely living the life of God.
8 “….worship the Lord your God and serve him only”
i love this verse! i really need on work on listening to God more often and following him more each day. i need to set a good example for my friends at school and show them how God can work through me. i read this whole chapter to my mom today in the car and we were both talking about how even jesus was confronted with temptation just everyone of us. and Satin is the “mastermind”(for lack of a better word) behind all of it.
i also love verses 42-44 because jesus knew he was sent to this earth to teach others about God and that he couldnt just preach in one town. it meant he had to travel many days and nights to get to different towns just to preach the good news.i love that he took his time helping others and forcusing more on them rather than paying attention to himself and his “needs”.
i also read today echlesiaties 7 and i loved it!!! i highly encourage everyone to read it, its amazing!
please pray for me…im going through some pretty tough times right now with my family and i just hope and pray that things will get better as soon as possible.
thanx for the letter form true north! i loved it and im going to try to come this coming tuesday:)
32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
Like Mike said, how amazing would it be to hear a sermon from Jesus himself. We can only imagine the authority that Jesus demanded from His audience. We need to speak the gospel wth the same authority that Jesus did.
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
It does not just say worship God and serve Him, but it points out that we are to be serving Him ONLY!
34″Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
Anyone can say or accept that Jesus is God, but what sepperates us from them is love and a desire to change. If we do not love God than where is our motivation to obey His commands? If we do not have a desire to turn from the temptations of sin to a life with Christ then how are we different than the demons and non-Christians? There is no difference! It is by God grace that these changes occur in us, without Him there is no salvation.
When Jesus went out to be tempted by the devil, in the same ways we are tested daily, he consistently went to the scriptures to effectively refuse to give into temptation. Reading the Bible is an essential tool for our daily fight against temptation and sin. We need to deeper study God’s word even outside of SOTD. I personally think that I should read and study the Bible way more than once a day. I pray that we could all make it a goal to dive deeper into God’s word.
This chapter is awesome. Verses 1-13 stood out to me. Its really cool how Jesus resisted the devil’s temptation. He says “it is written…” and says things that are in the Bible. This could also encourage us to resist temptation. It reminds me of the verses in James that say to persevere during trials and temptations.
40When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.
41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
It’s amazing how many things Jesus has done and that people still wouldn’t believe in him. you would have to have a very hard heart to ignore Jesus after this.
42At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
The thing I love about this verse is it shows how important it is to have a relationship with God. Jesus didn’t want everyone to know that he was the Christ so that he could find a quiet place to be with God. Jesus wanted to be with God more than anything else, so we also need to value our relationship with God above anything else.
29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff.
30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
I just thought this was kind of funny. Everyone is trying to grab Jesus to throw him off a cliff, but they somehow aren’t able to. God pretty much owned them.
I strongly agree with spence dog because we all need to be evangelizing ar our schools and not to be tempted in to the dark. We must all be ready for the coming day and be happy that he will come to save us and we have done our best to preech the word.
wow what an amazing chapter. we serve an amazing God who can do anything and everything. i loved how in the begining, satan tried everything in his power to get jesus to stumble, and not once did he even flinch. He stood hi ground, and rebuked satan. i loved that. we need to be trsting that our God who can do anything, will do everything for us…..we need to have our full faith and trust in God alone, and serve him only!
(:
3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”
What this is saying is that no normal human being would be able to have eternal life with out God. He is our only way to truly live.
43But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
We are to preach the good news just as Jesus did, not only in our schools, but all over! Also with authority
4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
12Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
These verses stood out to me because Jesus used verses to answer Satan;s temptations. This also remined me of 1 Corinthians 10:13, that we will not be tempted beyond what we are able to bare. They helped me realize that if God is using scripture when being tempted we should also have verses to back us up when we most need them.
I also like the miracles ad how amazing it was that He could just cast out a demon, its just proves that he is in control of everything. This chapter was totally loaded with inriching and key verses. Very intresting!
I thought this chapter was so neat!
8Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
I agree with Vanessa’s and Ashlynn’s comments on this verse. This verse made me think about what Pastor Bobby said about the nonbelievers; how they think that they aren’t serving anyone but themselves, but they’re actually serving Satan! They think they’re free and living for themselves, but they are bound with the chains of their sin and guilt, and are serving the Devil! That’s so scary! It made me realize how important it is to share this with people who aren’t saved. That they are not serving God, but the Devil! We need to pray for these people, that their hearts will be open to the message of Salvation and that they will be changed!
12Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
This verse remnded me of when i was growing up. I was trying to figre out if God was real or not so i kept asking Him thigs like…”If you are real…then that tree will fall down.” And then i would have doubts because i thought God might just make the tree fall down LATER instead of right hen…which would be considered a loophole in my prayer i guess.
Great to see we are still getting lots of good comments on a Friday!
31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath began to teach the people.
32They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
Even though these people are impressed with the preaching of Jesus here in Capernaum…by the time we get to chapter 10 Jesus is telling them they are going to hell. That’s one of the verses we looked at in our sermon last week. This is the Worst Case Scenario: http://www.compasschurch.org/hs/sermons
It is not enough to hear authoritative teaching, we still have to apply what it says. We can’t just hear it, we have to do it! That’s what we are going to talk about this weekend at True North…what happens when someone repents…I hope to see you at True North!
32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
the template set by Christ about how he spoke really should encourage us to speak the message of God authoritatively. people do end up listening if what we are saying commands them to either repent of have to suffer the consequences…
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
24 “I tell you the truth,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
Jesus knew that He would not be perceived well in Nazareth where He grew up. They had known Him as Joseph’s and Mary’s Son. The people of Nazareth were unable to accept that someone they knew well could be the Messiah. We may encounter people that may have a similar view of Jesus Christ as a good teacher, or a good man but not the Son of the living God. I pray that all of us at True North would glorify God by maintaining a high view of God.
This chapter starts off so cool. here the devil is just tempting Jesus and even using scripture but then Jesus comes back with another scripture and denies the devil. This is how we should be we should have scripture to back up everything that we do.
32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
This is so cool. People were amazed here because of the authority that Jesus’s message had. Like mike and other people said it would have been so awsome to see Jesus himself preach. Like he is healing people and casting out demons. Like bobby said in his recent sermon how amazing would it be to be listiening to Jesus and someone stands up and is like oh u dont know what you are talking about, but then Jesus just casts the demon out of that person. That would be so legit.
41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
And i think this verse is so awsome and shows the true power of Jesus. First of all he is casting out demons but not only that he is rebuking them. That is just so crazy to think about.
