Do Not Pass Judgment on One Another
14:1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.
10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written,
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall confess to God.”
12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.
Do Not Cause Another to Stumble
13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. (ESV)

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
I sometimes put myself on a “high horse.” I look around at other Christians and say tomyself, “Wow…..I am such a better Christian than this kid who doesnt go to church all the time.” I am wrong to judge this way! We tend to look down at others and try to “up one” in the reputation world……We need to remember to focus more on ourselves in this aspect….because God will be judging us.
Nice to see you up late and thinking about God, Luke. It’s right to not be on a high horse because of your own actions. But here God is instructing us not to get caught up in religious rituals that contain disputable differences.
He spends the majority of time directing us to take the humble position AND tells us in verse 16 to “not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil.” We are to speak up, just not for inconsequential things: “let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” The peace and edification He is speaking of is not ‘everything is ok and let’s be friends’ but the peace of Christ and wisdom that comes from repentance and faith. It’s very different than accepting false doctrine. Be sensitive and don’t cause others to stumble by focusing on minor issues like whether or not to eat or not eat certain foods. We are called to proclaim the truth accurately and with passion! Not going to church regularly is specifically called out as wrong in Heb 10:25 “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” So, be humble, discerning and wise in what you say and how you encourage others!
4Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
this verse is pretty cool its lettin us know we have no right to judge one of gods servents wich at times alot of us dooo and this verse is warning us.
Great commetns you guys!
8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
This is such a great statement! Can we say this about our relationship with Christ? Can we say that it is so consuming that it is all that we live for, and that even when we die it will be for the glory of God? Saddly this is not true of me, but I am striving to become more like this (Philip. 3:12). Christ desires all of us, not just the parts of our lives we choose to give Him, so let’s live entirely for Christ as our spiritual act of worship (Rom 12:1)!
Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving!!
1.) Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.
Yeah just like Luke said, we should not be comparing ourselves to others trying to boost our own esteem and think we are better Christians than other people. Instead, we should be encouraging them to come to church and not tearing them down!
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
11It is written: ” ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’ ”
12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
Great comments Luke, Old Man, and Brett. Jesus was against hypocritical judging and said this in Matthew 7:1, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” That truth should make us quick to look over other’s faults and quick to forgive once we have been wronged. Christians need to spend less time judging other people’s character and looking to get their own needs met. Instead we are called to focus on meeting the needs of others and to make sure the critical eye is pointed at our own character. As people who will have to give an account that should motivate us to do what is right.
23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
Here Paul is telling the Christians that if something is not wrong according to the law, but if their conscience tells them it is not right for them to do, don’t do it. There are some gray areas that Christians will run across. It is important that we pray about these things and ask God to reveal to us if it is something we should be doing. If we are doing something that is not a blatant disregard for God’s law, but something that we are conflicted about, the choice for us is clear—don’t do it! An example of this in my own life is watching Rated R movies. I am well above the age where the law permits me to view them, and there is nothing is the Bible that says not to watch Rated R movies, but there are other verses that tell me that this is not something that I should do. The inappropriate images and language that I will subject myself to will not bring about righteous living in my life and my conscience is not clear if I do that. Are there any things in your life that are not directly defying God’s law, but that you don’t have a peace about doing? Spend some time in prayer today and ask God to reveal to you the right thing to do.
Happy Thanksgiving True North! Great comments too.
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
I was thinking the same thing as Luke, thinking of myself a better Christian than other people. We shouldn’t be looking down at people putting ourselves better than others because we are “Teen Ministers” or something. Brett took the words right out of my mouth that we shouldn’t be judging because we will be judge but encourage with showing love.
17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
This reminds me of sometimes we just go through the motions when we try to please god. How we really need to put our heart of hearts into it and see how righteous we can really be instead of just “eating and drinking” for god. Because on the day that we are judged he will not only look at what we did,but how much faith we put in him and did we really use and do everything for him with our “heart of hearts”? Give your all for him
Give thanks
I haven’t been on for such a long time :(
I have the same trouble as Luke does, I will look at others and think that I am better because I go to church more, read the bible more, but it never comes to mind that they may actually have a better relationship with God in their “secret place.” I pray that God will help me to not judge self-righteously and that he will help me learn to judge through love.
23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
I read this verse and it clearly reveals that our earthly matters are not to be loved because all of it will be gone and we are only abandoning God when we put things we “need” above God. I pray that we will all learn to put God first in everything we do and always look to please God.
11It is written: ” ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’ ” I have a tough time understanding this verse. It seems like it is saying that everyone will say that God is God, but when I talk to people about religion they say the most ridiculous things, and the few that say God is God have a wrong impression of whom God is (eg. one person said that God was not perfect). I ask you all to help me understand this verse, thank you.
God is good.
8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
i liked this verse because we will always belong to the Lord. And it reminds me to live 100% for Him. God gave us life, and we are His children, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. and when we do die if you’re a Christian you have eternal life. and it reminds me Christ died for us. and that we recieve everything through Him.
1Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.
We need to be sure that we are accepting to baby Christians and people whose faith is weaker than ours. We shouldnt be judging them and acting like we are so much better than them. This can happen easily at places like true north. WE should include everyone, not just the “on fire” Christians because we need to encourage the weaker Christians in their walk also.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!
22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves.
23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
This chapter is all about the conscience. We should not do anything where our heart condemns us (verse 22). Or which is not from faith (verse 23). This is the same idea that we talked about this weekend with our third point from the sermon: Keep your conscience clean! This was a great reminder for me this morning! If you want to listen to the sermon this weekend it is now online:
http://www.compasschurch.org/hs/sermons
This chapter brings a new element too: Considering other people’s consciences! We must be careful that we don’t cause a brother or sister in Christ to do something that is not from faith and trust that it is right. Let’s look out for each other!
13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.
I know in times past I have purposely done something so that another person (whether I like them or not) will stumble. Either they’ll get the dirty work, they’ll get the blame, they end up going through a personal issue, or they’ll end up hurting themselves or another person – I’ve put a stumbling block in their way. But that’s not right, because that’s not what God wants! God wants us to make up our minds to not do that, because we should build up not tear down (or in this case, not make them fall down!).
Every person is an eternal being, whether they end up in heaven or hell. We should try to see EVERYONE like that, regardless of how we see them externally or what we know of them. EVERYONE was made in God’s image, everyone sins, etc etc. So instead of passing so much judgment on people, we should live knowing that God will judge them (it’s not our job) and that they’re just as special as the next person, regardless of how it appears. Plus, if you treat someone like they’re an eternal being and as what they are – a person made by God – then it can and will change how you see them overall.
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
Sometimes as a christian I look down on those who aren’t or who claim to be but their actions don’t show it. Instead of looking down on them and being rude or self-centered I should edify them and spur them on towards love and good deeds. I need to be an example og both God’s love, and his hatred of evil and sin. We shouldn’t think we’re better then anyone because God made us all equal and He’s the one who is greater then anyone.
Wow, tons of great comments today!
21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.
If anything you do, even carelessly, leads to someone else stumbling in their faith, its a sin. I know I’m guilty of that. We have to be constantly looking out for others and considering their spiritual lives as well. We can’t be selfish in our faith and only considering whats best for us. Being Christians means we’re part of something much greater than ourselves, and we have to be considerate of that.
Happy Thanksgiving True North!!
22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves.
God’s word is awesome. Just had to say that. This verse is telling us that we shouldn’t get caught up in the little things, like how someone eats pita bread and the other eats sourdough (can’t stop thinking about food). We should accept our brothers and sisters in Christ no matter what little thing they like to do. In this case we should not worry about others, but make sure that what we are doing doesn’t cause anyone to stumble.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone and remember to be most thankful for Christ’s gift to us on the cross!
6. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.
This verse goes along with how we are to live all aspects of our lives all out for the Lord. Our Christian lives aren’t only at church, but should extend into all aspects of our lives and are entire life should be in a awe and love for God. Hence we must do everything from cleaning our rooms, homework, being a friend, etc…. at our best to bring glory to God.
11It is written: ” ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’ ”
mmmmm this verse is legit. like the song Great Redeemer, says “oh for a thousand tongues to sing, my Great Redeemer’s praise…” imagine EVERYONE confessing to God and bowing before Him. that is sooo legit!!! when the Lord reveals Himself and Christ returns, everyone will know that He does exist, and that Christ is real and He is the savior.
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
in Pastor Mike’ sermon last week, he said this that really stood out to me: “we may be better than others, but we are not better off” whether we live like saints or murder and plunder, we will all have to stand before God and we will be judged. thankfully by the sacrifice of Christ our sins will be washed away, or we will be sent to hell forever.
Pastor Mike also said not to compare resumes. he gave this simile: “lets say that you and a friend want to swim to Japan from the coast. he swims out past the boays and drowns, and you drown halfway to Catalina. sure you swam farther, but you both are still thousands of miles from Japan.” in the same way, we are all sinners, and no matter how many good things we do, we are still soooo far away from God’s holiness that we relatively are no better than a murderer or theif. we cannot be holy on our own; we need to repent of our sins and place our faith in Christ, that is the only way to God.
Happy Thanksgiving!
20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.
I liked how this verse put it: don’t destroy the work of God for the sake of food. Things like food don’t really matter, and we should be willing to give up such things if they cause other Christians to stumble, even if food and such isn’t necessarily bad. We should always be looking out for our brothers in love, willing to give up anything we have to strengthen them. The things of this earth will pass away anyway, but peoples state of sanctification truly matters.
I like Old Man’s comment and Pastor Bobby’s also. This passage is talking about the conscience but specifically the little things that people were getting held up on like what should be eaten and what shouldn’t. But what does that mean for us today?? There are certain things that aren’t specifically “condemned” in scripture but at the same time, our society has put a spin on them. That’s a whole other topic and discussion…The truth of the matter for today is that if what I want to eat or drink or do for the sake of applying this for today, I need to make sure that I am using discernment for who may be around. Obviously that doesn’t mean that I can be a closet alcoholic as long as I don’t do it around others…the bible specifically talks about the altering of our mind. I just need to be smart about what I do at all times. Doing this will allow us to never put our brothers and sisters in a place of discomfort or stumbling. Being the one to put a stumbling block in someone elses path would cause our ministry to be discredited! 2 Cor 6:3. We should always be smart about what we do or in this case, what we eat or drink.
Happy Thanksgiving!!! Give thanks in the fact God gives us life and breath daily and the ability to serve and love others!!!
(v8) If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
(v9) For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
Jesus Christ wasn’t just the savior of the Jews, He was the savior of the Gentiles and of all men, this was a big deal back in Pauls time. Everyone belongs to God and will be judged by Him, there is no getting out of judgement. This is why we need to make sure we are right with God through constantly confessing of our sins and turning away from them. Being alive in Christ means we are to live for God 100% in all of our actions and thoughts by obeying Gods Word.
10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
We shouldn’t, like Luke said, judge others by saying something like, “Well I go to church and he doesn’t, so I’m better than him.” We should not look down at people, no matter what. The reason is, all of us, are going to stand before God one day. We’re not supposed to look down on others because, to God, a sin is a sin.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
i hope everyone had an amazing thanksgiving(:
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
no one is more christian than someone else. if someone isnt a christian you shouldnt look down on them for it. show them of our faith and show them how amazing it is to be one!
10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
I echo everyone who commented on this verse. We shouldn’t look down on others because we think we are better than them in any way. In reality, we are all going to be judged by God. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, so we are not better off than any other person. We are all sinners who deserve the same thing: the wrath and punishment of God, and going to hell.
I love ThanksGiving!! (=…….. i have sooooo much to be thankful for
Okay well i love this chapter because it says a lot about how we are all equal and that we should never be putting others down but only building them up in Christ, SPURRING one another on!!
23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
This last sentence really caught my attention; You are either sinning or not sinning, there is not inbetween. Your are either saying or doing things that are pleasing to God, or you are not; So you are either faithful or sinning! Like the Bible says, you are either with God or against him, He hates those who are Lukewarm and is going to destroy them.
Welcome back, Jonny! It’s great to see you on SOTD again!
This chapter talks a lot about not letting small issues get in the way of your faith. In particular, the thing that stands out most to me is the issue of not being a stumbling block to others. We may be strong enough in our faith to resist temptation, and our consciences may be clear in what we are doing, but if it will cause another believer to stumble then we need to take a step back and make sure we act out of love for them (verse 15) and not do anything around them that might tempt them to sin.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TRUE NORTH!!!
Hey my man Jonny Wright! Good to see you on here again. Verse 11 is a prophecy from the book of Israel. The same idea is in Philippians 2:10-11 as well. It is not saying that this is happening right now. Right now many people reject God and even more our Lord Jesus Christ. But in the end they will all see. Every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess. This is a good thing to think about on thanksgiving. Usually we think of being thankful for things that we have now or have happened in the past. But I am thankful for this! The future reality that everyone will worship Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father!
I thought that this entire passage was focused in on one subject. Just because we think something is right and God agrees with us, doesn’t mean that we should be able to act upon it in public, because others may take it as something wrong and reject God because they see things that Christians are doing that they think is wrong. Just because something isn’t sinful doesn’t give us a right to do it in public, in this case it is eating what is ceremonially unclean. also, if we think that something is sinful and God doesn’t, it doesn’t mean that you will not be punished by God for doing it, because we still willfully disobeyed God, which shows that our heart didn’t care about him even though it wasn’t a “real” sin. God cares about where the heart is.
12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.
We must remember how important it is not to be a stumbling block to our brothers and sisters in Christ.
17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
18because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.
19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
Let us not get caught up in bickering about insignificant things, but remember that the Kingdom of God is about ‘righteousness, peace and JOY in the Holy Spirit.’
I love verse19: “Let us make EVERY to do what leads to peace and mutual edification”. We should always be striving to build each other up and hold each other accountable!! This is the very reason that ‘Small Groups’ is so important to our Christian walk. Ecourage your friends to come to Small Groups -The bible says:”MAKE EVERY EFFORT” !! Come’on guys you can do it!! :)
8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
This verse is a really good reminder that whatever we do we do it for the Lord. We need to live daily for the Lord and this verse also reminds us that we should be willing to die for our faith. So whatever we do lets do it for the Lord for we belong to Him.
19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
This is a good verse to show us the dedication that we need to have for the Lord. We need to make EVERY effort to do what leads to peace. And i think that this prinicple could relate to so many things. In everything that we do we need to be making every effort and be giving 100% for the Lord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
We as Christians belong to God and because of that we should do everything to please our heavenly Father. Hey people get the word out to read your Bible’s this is pitiful. I know it’s not so much about getting a high number but all of us need to be reading our Bibles. It’s God’s Word and he gives commands and tells us how we should live. I think that it would be hard to follow these rules and guidelines if we did not read and learn them. Then of course later apply them.
7For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.
8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
9For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
These three verses are so powerful. We are not alone in this world…God is always wiith us. No matter what we belong to Christ. He doesn’t want us worshiping other gods. He loves us so much that he suffered on the cross to save our sins to give us the opportunity to live with him in Heaven. I think that is something to be truely thankful for on this Thanksgiving day.
13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.
This verse is pretty intense! I actually think of this a lot when i;m hanging out with my friends at school. If i cause them to stumble then what benefit am I in their life?
11 It is written: ” ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.
Everyone will confess to God, even the most antiGod person out there will confess that Jesus is Lord. For us Christians, it will be the bes day ever, but for nonbelievers, it will be their worst day ever. Thats why we are here on this Earth right now. We need to tell eveeryone about this judgement day; otherwise we would be in heaven right now.
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
Christian or not, everyone in this world is prone to some sort of criticism, but all of us are subject to judgment by God. we are not perfect; but it does not mean that we should go around telling people we’re better than them just because we are smarter, have much more athletic ability, or just the fact that we are Christians. in a way, we are still equal to those around us, as we are sinners
