Matthew 13:1-30

The Parable of the Sower

13:1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

“‘You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.

15 For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and with their ears they can barely hear,
and their eyes they have closed,
lest they should see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart
and turn, and I would heal them.’

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. 17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

18 “Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The Parable of the Weeds

24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’” (ESV)

  1. Stacy Perkins says:

This parable of the seed is so poignant for me. I was so excited to love Jesus and be Christian when I was a late teenager. That lasted for maybe a year or two, and then I became a statistic that Pastor Bobby warns us of–one of the two out of three who falls away from his/her faith. I was the soil that was shallow, on mountainous turf. And as soon as I encountered trials and testing of my faith, which was special-delivered from Satan in the form of a relationship, my faith proved to not be SAVING faith. Deep down I knew it at the beginning, and that pride of thinking I could be strong proved me unfaithful.

What Pastor Bobby warned us of IS hard core. But it’s RIGHT ON: if someone or something causes us to sin, cut it out of our life. Do we love JESUS more–or do we love our SIN more? Being a believer is very difficult quite often. We MUST be on guard, armed, and ready, and we must ANTICIPATE the trials that will come our way, looking to prove the soil our hearts really are. And in order to really do so, we hafta HAFTA stay in the Word, learn what we are called to, and then obey by living it out. And pray. And be consistent in coming to church, where we can grow with our church, be encouraged and held accountable, and learn to put on the armor of God so that we are well protected when we go into the world and are confronted with Satan and his demons.

  2. Steffen Eriksen says:

13This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: ” ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

Jesus was telling his disciples that they had been given understanding, the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, yet the other people were left not understanding. Jesus says in these two verses that though the people observe what Jesus does with their sense, their sight and their hearing and so on, they don’t actually comprehend what happens. They hear the words, but don’t understand what they mean, and the see what He does, but they don’t perceive what they are looking at. I am just like these people. On my own, I am but a foolish sinner, choosing sin over God, not caring or understanding the slightest about God. It is only because of God’s amazing grace and love that I have been saved. I have done nothing that can ever earn my way to heaven. All I deserve is to be punished forever in hell. And the same with understanding, for I know nothing on my own. It is only by God giving wisdom to me that I can perceive and understand. I need to cry out to God for wisdom. I am going to need it more and more as I fight against this world. I need to be careful to discern that which is right from that which is wrong. Though my understanding brings me nowhere, God is omniscient (all-knowing) and will give me wisdom when I seek after it from Him. I need to be praying for wisdom everyday, not then when I use it everyone else will think I am smart, but instead that I can use that gift to make war against this world and the sin that corrupts it!

  3. Beth Lauder says:

20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

Stacy, I can relate to your comment because I was just like you. As an 8 year old I switched from a Catholic church to a Christian church and began hearing the Bible and learning about Jesus. I prayed a prayer to “ask Jesus into my heart” and thought I became a Christian. Unfortunately, what happened to me is exactly what Jesus describes in Matthew 13:20-21. When it was easy to be a Christian I stayed in church and appeared to be saved. But, as soon as I hit high school and it became clear that I was going to have to choose between being popular and having lots of friends and standing firm in my faith I fell away. The fact that I abandoned Christ for some short-term popularity and some fickle friendships showed that I was never really a Christian at all. The proof of my false faith was revealed when it became difficult to be a Christian. I feel extremely grateful that God did not cast me aside forever and harden my heart to the gospel because I rejected him when I was young. In my mid-20′s I got invited to a Bible study and it was there that I began reading the Bible daily and saw what it meant to be a true Christian. At that time I counted the cost, knew my old life, my friends, and my leisure activities would have to change. But since it was the Spirit working in me and drawing me to Himself, I was able to turn to Christ in repentance and faith for reals. Let this parable be a waring to you if you are like me as a teenager. If you see yourself falling away from God because times are tough or it is hard to be a Christian in your group of friends, beware! Only true Christians last and they never fall away!

  4. Victoria says:

10The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
11He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
13This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.
19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

This whole passage has a lot of great meaning. the Lord spoke to us in parables so that our human minds could understand just alittle bit of what God is trying to explain to us. its like reading a child a storybook, in their own version so that they can understand. God re-said His Word in a “story” so that we, His children, could understand. it is so true when He says that what little is sown in ones heart will easily be snatched away by the evil one. the evil one looks for those he can tempt and be easily swayed. i dont want to be that type of person. when satan tempts me i would want to have scripture as my backup and cast him away from me.
its always cool to think about something you personally said or did and realize that you maybe just made the Lord smile :)

This person has fallen away, they were on fire for Jesus but that fire only lasted a short time. I’m worried it can be me I’ve been on fire for Christ a lot last year and I’m really losing my love. I took some music off
my iPod after revival but I’m put them back on my
ipod. I’m not reading my bible as much anymore and
I just feel that my heart is hardening. I feel it being
harden b/c of other people bein fake

  6. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 20-21,”The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.”

I like these verses because they talk about how I thought I was a CHRISTian before October 3rd. I did exactly as these verses described. I sprang up quickly then I slowly remembered what I gave up and fell back into them. I have to make sure that whenever someone claims to be saved I have to examine their works and how they act and if they are ashamed of the GOSPEL. If they are then they are like the seed that fell with the rocks.

Thanks Beth and Stacy for getting real with the Word!

Mat 13:23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Thank You lord for giving us hat we need to live in harmony with You – forgiveness, a new heart and the Spirit! I desire to produce a harvest for You because of what You havedone and who you are! Please help me to do this today!

  8. AL∑C™ 2010 says:

30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

If i might say so myself, it sounds like a prophecy from Jesus is a brewiin. yikes

MMMMM!!Such a great chapter, and so convicting! All i have to say is “WOW!”
Great comment Stacy!I couldn’t agree with you more!
20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or

22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.
23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
I need to have stronger faith in the Lord. I feel that at times i worry a lot about my surroundings and different situations. Its not that i turn against Him and deny Him, but i have stumbled into sin when things have gone wrong. And that is the worst way to handle a difficult situation. It is so hypocritical of me to meerly hear the word on a sunday and a wednesday, and never pop open my bible or see the wrong in my life and not fix it. Its like the whole spinach in the tooth example- You dont look in a mirror and see spinach in your teeth, then walk away and leave it there!!!you take it out! I need to have stronger faith and i need to build it up strong so i can be more and more like the good soil who recieved the seed and hears the word and understands it and applies it to my life! I know that with God, i can do that, so im going to perservere and move up and on to who God wants me to be more and more each day. I want to completely obey His commands and NOT COMPROMISE!!
    Maranatha!

  10. Nicole Waymire says:

30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

That is an intense verse. Most people would just look that over and think Jesus is just talking about wheat still…No, not really. Jesus is talking about US! The believers and the non-believers, God’s team and Satan’s team! Now, as a christian you may think “This has nothing to do with me…I’m a believer, so I’m okay!” That is not true. This verse has SO much to do with you! The one thing I really got from this verse is that if we aren’t spreading the Good News, sharing the Gospel, there are going to be SO many “weeds” in this world!!! And most likely, some of them will be loved ones. Maybe a good friend, family member, or even the kid you sit next to in class. Whoever it may be, do you want them to burn eternally? I know I don’t! This really spoke to me to get my pride out of the way, and pray for boldness and strength to GET GOD’S WORD OUT THERE!!

    Maranatha!

  11. Pastor Bobby says:

Hey shhfjwikxjeudhruwi, I really appreciate your honesty about how you are feeling about falling away! I am praying for you! Being aware that you are falling into sin and confessing it before God and men is the first step! I will pray that you will continue to be open about this and that all of us here at True North will be an example to you of real Christianity that will inspire you to return to standing for Jesus! It’s great to see you on here getting back into his Word and I pray that the music you listen to will help you think about him!

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seize you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

  12. Mike says:

29″ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.

Until the day that we die or the Lord returns, we are surrounded by those who are not saved. And while it would be awesome if God were to remove them – as He will one day, when He removes all sin completely – we need to remember that the harvest has not yet been completed. Every lost soul we encounter is someone who still has a chance to repent. And we have been called to bring them the Truth. This verse was convicting to me because, even though we may think that someone will never be saved, nobody is beyond the power of God, and I need to be faithful to boldly proclaim the Gospel to everyone, since only God knows who will be saved.

  13. Natalieeeeee says:

This passage talks about 3 different seed environmenttss.. haha. the first one are the seeds that feell on a path and were eatin up by birds.. the second one are the seeds that fell on the rocks and sprouted quickly, but then died because they had no roots, they were deeply planted.. and the third is the one that fell on good soil and produced a crop way bigger then was sown!!! whoever hears the word and doesn’t recieve it Satan snatches up the seed!! sadly i know a lot of people who have been like the seed on the rocky soil.. they are joyful for a short period of time, but when a hardship or a trial comes “he quickly falls away”(v.21) BUT the one who hears the Word and understands it is like the seed that fell on the good soil and produced a great crop! We have to have to have to be on guard and in the Word constantly!!! And like Nicole said we need to be spreading God’s word out there and planting more seedds (:

  14. Brooke Miller says:

20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.

This verse made me think about hearing the truth and how to put it to action. If you hear the word and know the truth, it only makes sense to spread it and tell others! How selfish would I have to be to not talk to others about the gospel and Christ if I just hid the light and didnt talk to others about it? As Pastor Bobby once said in a sermon: “Be a doer, not a hearer.” The person who has the knowledge and is a Christian, but does not talk to others will be punished more than anyone else. Now knowing that I am a Christian, that is a pretty scary thought and is a motivation for me to evangelize more! Not only for the opportunities given to us, but to look and search for those unlocked doors!

  15. Summer Staeb says:

20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

Unfortunately, this happens a lot nowadays. So many people either from going to a crusade or going to some church camp ‘ask Jesus into their hearts’ or get saved. Or so they think. They get all pumped about Christ for a short time, but once exposed to all the temptations of the world again, they quickly fall away, only showing that their salvation was not genuine. I was one of these people right before Revival ’08. I thought I was a Christian but none of the actions came along with the words I was speaking. I know that if God had not showed me what it truly meant to be a Chrstian and that my life wasn’t matching up, I would have fallen away due to my fleeting ‘salvation.’ I am so thankful that God showed me his mercy and for producing a good crop in me! I pray that my salvation would prove to endure to the very end!

  16. Sarah G.! says:

14In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: ” ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

YESSSSS more prophecy fulfilled through our Lord Jesus Christ!! Why can’t the people see it?! I will be praying for more boldness as I return to school on Monday, and I will also be praising God for sending His Son Jesus to save us!! GOD IS GOOD, MARANATHA!! :D

  17. The parable of the seeds is such a reality check; how many seeds are planted and aren’t real?! It is a reality that we must face…CHRISTIANS STAY CHRISTIANS, real ones that is. I was a seed that wasn’t rooted in good soil for 10 years, and I am so thankful that one that was planted finally grew by His grace! May we be faithful in planting the seeds and trust God to make them grow!

  18. Jasmine 2010 says:

I really really like this parable because it gives so many examples of all the people who hear the word. ! There’s the person who hears the gospel but doesn’t listen to it, the ones who hear it but reject it as soon as they are persecuted or fall away when they go through tough times, the seeds that hear the word but the worldly desires choke them up, and the seeds that really understand it and are rooted in it and bear fruit. I need to be strongly rooted in Jesus and not fall away but keep standing!

23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

I pray that God can use me to produce a crop for him and plant seeds/water them for His glory! Since I have experienced all of God’s grace and mercy, I don’t want to keep that gift to myself but to share it with others and evangelize the good news of the gospel!

  19. Josh H. says:

15For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

This verse describes the people of this world so accurately, and at one point before God softened our hearts we were the same way, because it is only through God that we can understand what is being said. People dont want to hear the word because they do not want to submt to God or acknowledge that someone is over them, My job as a christian is to go out and pray that God would soften the peoples heart and keep telling them and if its Gods will they will come to him but only through him not by anything we do!

  20. Elizabeth Holt, follower of our Lord Jesus Christ :D says:

20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.
22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

Okay, just gotta say, this is an extremely convicting yet awesome passage. Verses 20-22 so easily could be me!! (before revival that is) but as shhfjwikxjeudhruwi said, it’s hard not to fall away! and then as Pastor Bobby said, 1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptations has seized except what is common to man, and God is faithful and will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But instead will provide the way of escape so that you will be able to stand up under it. One of my favorite verses learned at revival!!!!!! (plus its the only one that stuck, coincidence? i think NOT!!) I feel so encouraged when i read this pasage, that used to be me…and now, I am SAVED!! and though I fall from time to time, I get back up running, running until I finish the race. Because no temptation has seized me that I CANT OVERCOME, why? Because God is an amazing God thats why!!!! I love God sooo much and I never want to fall away, God keep me close an in your word ALL THE TIME!! Even let me constantly think about you days I didn’t get in your word God, AMEN.

    P.S. praying for you shhfjwikxjeudhruwi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. I really like this parable, but im not going to copy it all down here. I see this way too often and it makes me sad to see how many people can be on fire for Christ and then fall away later. I recently visited a friend that went to my private school a while back, and he told me that he’s not really a Christian anymore. It’s upsetting to know that, according to Jesus, he either never understood and listened to the Word, shied away during persecution, or had too much fear of the world. I will be praying for him and for everyone that experiences the same thing.

17 For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

We are such a lucky generation yet we sometimes don’t realize this. We have television, internet, all this technology and medicine, yet many people miss out on the best part of what we have. We have Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for our sins. Many people in the Old Testament looked for atonement and forgiveness, but they had to perform animal sacrifices and stuff like that. We have Bibles readily available to us, with the great news of the Gospel in it! God is truly amazing for giving us that gift.

13This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand

It’s pretty interesting Jesus spoke to his disciples and non-believers in parables. Jesus had to relate his teachings in some form of imagery to his people because we couldn’t understand what he had to say otherwise. We have such a caring God and he wants us to learn everything we can about him on earth so we can share it with others! I know i am so blessed to have found God and have my parents and brothers to support me at home, my church to guide me through everyday situations, and friends to surround me when I need them! God is GOOD:)!!!!

  23. Murphy Danahy says:

20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

This is such a good verse. We have to check our selves that we do not fall away during persecution, but instead it should bring us closer to GOD. The more we suffer for him, the more we should rely on him.

  24. Jacob U. says:

These verses are so great because it remings us tht we need to stand fitm in Christ. Also Ithink that we should be active, and ready, in helping Christians that do not have a firm foundation, to build one.

  25. Karsten Klein says:

29″ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.

30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

The weeds = people that are not saved. The wheat = people that are saved. The harvest = Jesus’s return. God does not remove all the people that are not saved because some of them can still repent for their sins and be saved, like when we evangelize. But in the end the weeds, people that are not saved, will be destroyed and the wheat, the people that are saved, will go to heaven.

  26. Kyle J says:

22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

The theme that falls is from the fallen is that they both worry…the one that recieved the word with joy was worried about trials that standing up for God. This person worries a lot about his own life! Jesus talks about worrying a lot, I struggle with worry. I think it was Vanessa had a good quote about worry…that it’s a lack of faith and my faith needs to increase in times of distress.

  27. It's Daniel Yo! says:

29″ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.

I agree with mike on this…until Jesus returns of until we die…we are surrounded by weeds…we need to remember not to get entangled in them, or else we will be collected and burned in the fire

  28. Meisha Preston says:

17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

The coming of the Messiah was what all the prophets longed to see. They only got glimpses of how the Messiah would save Israel. They didn’t get to see the completion of the story. However, today, we have the full Bible. We know that the Messiah came once as a sacrifice and will come again in all his glory! I am thankful that we have the full gospel revealed to us. Thank you Lord, for giving us everything we need for life and godliness in your Word.

  29. Never Take David Personal says:

30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

wow…this parable reminds me alot of what pastor Bobby says about how we will eventually know who the fake Christians are….it might take a while but we will eventually know…. I also liked the bundles of tares thrown into the fire analogy of God’s enemies being thrown in hell…and how the good wheat is brought into the owner’s barn or God’s house…I pray that my friends are legitimently saved and will not eventually show that they have no fruit….Let us abide in the Lord forever!

  30. Kelsey says:

13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand

This verse reminds me how important it is to not only read the word, and then go away and forget it, but to also meditate on it and make sure that we act out what we read. I need to make sure that everything I read in the Bible, I also implement and act out in my life. If I read something and it seems easy enough to do, then I will implement it in my life, but sometimes if something is going to be a challenge, I will not always act it out, or I will at least try, but not complete. I have been working on this and praying for God’s help implementing his Word in my life and I have seen a great improvement. This verse reminds me just how important it is, and motivates me to keep it up.

  31. Maddison Nadeau - in AZ :D says:

19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.
20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.
22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

for starters, i totally agree with lizzies comment!! i love you lizz!!!! :D and its sooo true! God will not put us through anything we cannot handle. He always provides a way out as well!! GOD IS SO GREAT!! Plus, when your going theough something hard and you dont think that you can do it or bear it…God allowed it to happen to you because He knows that you can do it!! its so comforting and comfidence building to know that the LORD believes in you 100% and that no matter what your not on your own! God is always there with you. and i love these verses because they are so condeming and its something that im really scared of too. i dont want to fall away from the Lord, and i need to start making sure i read my bible everyday

  33. Wesley Wong says:

Matthew 13:1-2- That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.

I like the idea of large crowds gathering around Jesus. It means that Jesus has something good to say, and the people like Him, and like to hear Him speak. I am guessing that these people stopped whatever they were doing and then listened to what Jesus had to say. I want to be like these people, stop whatever I’m doing, and listen to God’s word.

    God Bless!!

21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

Jesus is talking about the Christians who are pumped up about everything and who are excited about the Bible and everything else. As soon as persecution comes thier way it becomes to “hard” for them and they give up on Christianity. I have had many friends like this. It hurts to see them give up so easily. In the Bible God promises us that persecution will come our way…we need to stay strong when it comes!

“Blessed are those who are persecuted!…”

  35. T moore is thankful for the cross says:

9 He who has ears, let him hear.”

This verse stuck out to me because it is like when you go evangelizing, we shouldn’t be thinking that some person/people shouldn’t hear the gospel. It also is a great encouragement to go out and share the gospel, telling everyone that is willing to listen. I pray that I would always keep this verse in mind and that it would encourage me to bring up the gospel in everyday conversations and to have a God filled conversation, and not talking about meaningless things.

  36. Stacy Perkins says:

Hey, shhfjwikxjeudhruwi. Man, I am in fierce prayer mode for you. I, too, after initially saying yes to Jesus with a lot of my heart, got rid of a bunch of my music, totally changed my friends, and everything. This was all at 19 years old, and my love for Jesus disintegrated by the time I was 21. I started gravitating toward people who also called themselves Christians, but lived life in very compromising ways, justifying sin in their lives. And since I never FULLY surrendered to Jesus Christ when I was younger, I became one of the hard core hypocrites within the church. One of the ones you find yourself frustrated with, and contributing to your growing hard-heartedness. Dude, I pray for the Lord to soften your heart, like He finally did to me…when I was 31!

You even acknowledging this in yourself is AWESOME. And then SHARING it with others is HUGE. I pray the Lord will use this vulnerability and bring it out of the dark and into the light. I really want to encourage you to come talk to a leader one on one, whom you can confide in, and who can help by praying for you and guiding you out of the darkness.

I found that I used certain attitudes and choices and justifications as an excuse to continue in my sin. I think it’d be so rad if you got even MORE real with yourself, and with a leader, to CONFRONT this sin that a part of your is still wanting to cling to, and give it up to our Lord, Whose strength is victorious over ANY sin.

I appreciate your honesty and I pray that God, “…Who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus,” as Paul prays in his letter to the Phillipians.

KEEP IT REAL. HE WORKS WITH THAT!!! No matter HOW ugly it is… :)

  37. Dan Lauder says:

23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Bearing fruit is always presented in the scripture as the hallmark sign of a true Christian. This parable is helpful for me to sort out how different people respond to the gospel. Through the years I can put names and faces on people who would be an example of each of the four soils. I need to make sure that my life is as productive as possible. I would rather yield 100 times over 5 times. Thus I need to make sure that I continually invest in eternal things over earthly things.

  38. Tristan Jorden says:

29″ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.

I really like this verse. We are to live harmoniously, however separate from those who are unChristian. Instead of taking the time to combat their behavior and attitudes, unless they are willing and willful to hear the Word, we should be focusing on our own pursuit of holiness. Pulling out “weeds”, may distract or compromise the growth of our “wheat”.

  39. DB 2010 says:

2Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.

First off, this is just so cool that so many people came to hear Jesus that he needed to go in a boat!!!

21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

This verse describes so many people that we may know and some of which claim to be full on Christians, yet will all away when the going gets tough… It is so important to rise up against the temptations of the world so our faith can be developed through the persecutions that arise, yet our perseverance is stronger!!!

  40. Brandi says:

I love how Jesus taught in parables because it’s makes it easier to understand what he is trying to say :)

  41. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

This reminds me of P Bobby’s message on how the prophets and angels are actually jealous of us because we get to recieve real forgiveness and salvation from our Lord Jesus Christ because God is merciful, loving, and forgiving. They longed to see who the Christ is and all the things we read about in the Bible…I KNOW that I definitely neeed to be more grateful for the Word of God before me and my salvation. Joy reminded us at the last girl’s workshop that those that were or are in jail for Christ didn’t/don’t get to have a Bible right before them. They memorized His Word and had it in their heart already so that when they didn’t have access, they would just repeat it to themselves. I am inspired to memorize more of His Word so that I may get to know Him more and be encouraging to others when the time comes. :)

  42. Boyd Jorden says:

30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’

This verse is a powerful promise that God will one day judge the righteous and the wicked. Sometimes it can be discouraging to see so much sin around us; it might even seem like wrongdoers are getting away with things scott-free. But Jesus makes it clear that is absolutely not the case! God will judge everyone for their actions, and the unrepentant, like the weeds, will be cast into the fires of hell and burn. That’s a scary image! It makes me… a.) so grateful for Jesus and the cross! and b.) want to make sure that I follow God’s commands and don’t ever make the mistake of thinking that my sinful actions are OK and will go unnoticed.

  43. Alyssa K says:

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

This makes me think of those who may or may not call themselves Christians, but refuse to listen to the truth that they need to have a personal relationship with Christ. I know how difficult it can be when you know someone who just “doesn’t get it”–because they think that believing God exists is good enough but it’s definitely not. Like Bobby says, Satan believes God exists, but that certainly doesn’t make him on God’s side. I’ve witnessed to one of those people that hears and sees but doesn’t truly listen and understand. And it’s tough because I know I just have to keep trying to get through even if they’re not easily affected, because I don’t want to be responsible for the death of their soul. I will continue to pray that God would soften their heart so that they can truly accept Christ and walk with Him.

  44. Jasmine Douglas says:

20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

These two verses really stood out to me today because I feel like this is the case for a lot of people. Sometimes people get on this emotional high and “accept Jesus into their hearts” and then all is fine and dandy for a shot period of time. But when you really see someone’s heart is when the trials come and you see what they turn to. There is no “temporary Christianity” Once you’re saved, you’re always saved. So if you fall away, were you ever really a Christian?
    1 john 2:19

  45. Rebekah Foreman says:

19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path

Sometimes people here the Word and just forget it and others listen to t and apply it to there life and not let the devil tempt them to forget it. I pray that I will apply every message to my life.

  46. Emily Knudsen says:

21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.
22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.
23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

I loved these couple verses because it shows the way humans act. Christians fall in good soil and follow a good life through God and produce good “fruit” as in Love, Patience, and Kindness ect. Those who are not followers of God are torn by sin “thorns” to bring them down and cause them to fall under the devil. So ask yourself are you making good “fruit”.

  47. Brick-E says:

9 He who has ears, let him hear.”

I think this is a great verse for those who haven’t heard about the gospel. If sinners have ears, which they do, let them hear the gospel. I know I need to step it up on telling others about Jesus. This verse will encourage me to tell people about Jesus. God gave the gift of hearing. We should use this to our advantage and tell ALL people about Jesus Christ!

  48. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

I need to make sure that I have a super strong relationship with the Lord a so that I in turn will be deeply rooted in Him. I do not want to be one of the people that seems to be living wholeheartedly for the Lord but then one day just begans to fall away. Just living without the Lord is a super scary thought because He is the basis of my life.

  49. Teagan Sanchez says:

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

We need to pay more attention to the Word of God because in order to really live a Godly life you need not only read the Bible but see the impact it has placed in others and hear the testamoys of others. AMEN!

  50. Cameron says:

23 “…He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

the key thing about the seed that falls on good soil is that it produces crops. in the lives of true Christians, fruit will be produced. we we read earlier, a good tree will produce good fruit, but a bad tree will produce bad fruit. the true test of whether we are true Christians or not is if we produce good fruit. the result of our salvation will be us working for God’s glory and doing good deeds. this is a comforting thing to know. i can have assurance of my salvation because of my good deeds. i need to be growing in my Christian walk and growing closer to God each day. i pray that God would use me to be the seed that yields not just thirty or sixty times what was sown, but a hundred!

  51. Spencer Camp says:

Matthew 13:30 “Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

I noticed in the footnotes at the bottom of my ESV Bible it distinguished the weeds as being a plant called darnel. Now, according to my study Bible, darnel is a weed that looks very similar to wheat, but the difference is that darnel contains harmful poisonous seeds. The wheat and the darnel look almost identical! Yet one is useless and the other is good for food. One will be burned and the other will be gathered and saved in the barn.

This was eye-opening—the saved and the unsaved are right next to each other on this earth. They look so similar, yet one is good and the other is bad, one will live and the other will burn. How can we know that we are the wheat? Jesus said you will know by their FRUIT. If the fruit is good, the plant is good. If the fruit is bad, the plant is bad. Those who abstain from sin, love one another, and obey the commandments are in Christ. Fruit is outward evidence of an inward transformation. If we have been redeemed we will act that way.

Since there are two destinations—I need to obey God’s commands. Because if I claim that I am in the truth, yet do not have fruit to back it up then I live in fearful anticipation of a fiery judgement. But I will love others because I firs have been loved—by Christ.

  52. Alison Reeves says:

30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

Right now, God is allowing sin to run its course. He is letting “bad things happen to good people.” But judgement IS coming on those who reject God, the weeds- and this verse shows- it WILL NOT be a party in Hell. Hell is a place of fire and pain, whereas the Christians, the wheat, will be brought into God’s protection forever! Umm seems pretty clear to me which is better to live for!

When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.—These verses remind me of DON’T STOP STANDING!! I love it! I definitely do not want to be like this person who has no root! I want to build a strong foundation that will help me understand and know that when the tough times comes I just need to have faith in the LORD to get me through anything. I also need to know that He puts these trials there for a reason and it is a test to see if I am persevering in my faith, making sure I am growing stronger. Really going to be prayig for my foundation and that I can build a strong one :)

stoked for double it up tomorrow!

  54. Mark says:

5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.
6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root

This was a very encouraging verse for me when I first became a Christian because it constantly reminded me that I need to develop a firm foundation in God’s word every single day and God’s word are my roots!!!!!

30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.

This verse encourages me to witness to people because people who aren’t saved will be thrown in the fire. True love is telling them what will happen when they don’t repent, not keeping the truth from them so their feelings won’t get hurt. Even though it is sometimes scary to witness, once you do it it becomes easier and it is fun. Lord, give me the strength to witness to anybody at any time.

“Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

Mmmm, that’s frightening! (the plants obviously representing people)
Like us, the plants among the good soil and bear fruit are the ones which are to be collected, but the non-fruitful, or useless ones, are taken and burned.

” ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

You cannot initially tell which ones are wheat or weeds when they are young in the growth, but time will tell them apart. Eventually, you will see the ‘wheat’ producing good produce, and you will see the ‘weeds’ being useless. This is how He will tell them apart, by their produce.

All of us are sinners, and eye-to-eye, its really hard sometimes to see which are the Christians, betweeen the non-christans. And like J.Watt said, only God can see what’s really inside, so its up to us to spread the Word “and make all the ‘weeds’ into wheat”.

  58. Lizzie McCoy says:

19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

Everyone has a tendency to forget things, but we need to NOT forget the Word of God, and we need to stand against temptations.

  59. christopheriksen says:

17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

This just makes me think about how blessed I am to have God’s word and especially what it means in salvation. This reminds me of a message Ben gave, how prophets longed for and angels desired to look into these things. I am even more blessed than the prophets because I actually know who Jesus was and have had the message of reconciliation revealed to me and be able to experience it. Its so amazing, and I need to be praising God everyday for it, but sadly I don’t think about it as much as I should because its so awesome.

  60. Taylin Reinholtz says:

This is what I got out of today’s scripture:

We need to keep our hearts, minds, and souls set on God. We need to receive him with an open heart. We can’t have our hearts hardened towards God. Same with other people. If you keep evanglizing to them enough, hopefully their hearts will soften and we can get the word across. After they accept Jesus, we just got to work on encouraging one another to keep each other standing firm in the faith!!

    DON’T EVER STOP STANDING!!

21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

I always love the feeling of walking out of a sermon and thinking how can i appy this to my life or how can I make this better. I do remeber someone at revival saying after that trip that the people who changed thier life after that will probally only last for a short amount of time. Thier is a lot of things out thier that tempt us to fall away from the Lord. Or people at school who persecute and try to make us believe that what we are saying is wrong or just say that you are crazy. I hope to receive the seed and grow into this beatiful tree full of leaves. I hope everyone is doing good on thier SOTD, and if not I hope they are getting back on the trail.

  62. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

8Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

This is what I am going to pray for. That my friends and I would grow more that we have every grown in out walk with the Lord this year. The question is are we the good soil that will grow or are we not. Will we fall when the hard times come or will we stand strong.

  63. Matt Rex says:

We need to be the wheat so that we may enter the kingdom of Heaven and we need to stand out from the weeds and be an example. As followers of Jesus we should be different so when the time comes we will go to His barn.
    God bless, Matt Rex

Jesus’ parables tell us that we need to make sure we are rooted in him, meaning, we need to be living according to God’s Word, storing up treasures in heaven. Our salvation is all because of Jesus Christ and we need to live accordingly, not getting wrapped up in things of this world.

  65. Katie Slusher- From OR says:

17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

Wow, after thinking about this verse I realized how privileged I am to have received the entire written Word of God! Many people in the Old Testament only lived with the promise of the coming Messiah, but I get to know and read about the completed work of Christ on the cross. I praise the Lord for his completed Word! It also makes me question if I am truly treasuring the Word like I should be? I pray that I would be desiring God’s Word more and more.

  66. ELLA says:

21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

This happens much too often. 2 out of 3 young people will fall. It makes me think about Revival and how everyone is so pumped up but then doesn’t keep it up. I pray that I always continue to be seeking the LORD and that I will not “give up”. I memorized 1 Peter 1:6-7 awhile ago, and it is really encouraging. It talks about how persecution and trials are to prove the legitimacy of my faith. I need to remember this.

  68. Evan McKee says:

21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

Sadly, this is the truth with most of today’s christians. it’s scary that barely any make it out of college and claim they are still beleivers. I don’t want to ever fall away and am scared of what will happen if I ever stop reading the bible.

This reminds me of pastor Ben’s sermon on what the prophets and angels can only imagine. Like he preached a while back, the prophets were searching frantically, striving to find out all they could about the promised Messiah. And even the angels were and probably still are amazed at the redemption offered to men in Jesus; as Peter said, they “long to look into” such things. But we, WE have it! What the prophets were eager to find out and what the angels long to look into: Jesus Christ. We, today, although not in person, can learn about Him in God’s Word. We are offered this amazing salvation by God, who should be condemning us to His righteous justice. Salvation is the greatest, most exciting, amazing thing; God, please never let me forget it or let my focus be taken from this incredible gift. Praise the Lord!

23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

This is what I need to do ALL the time as a Christian! If I am not serving the LORD in everything with an eager heart, it is likely that I will fall away, that the thorns will choke me. I need to stay in the word all the time and in prayer so that I won’t fall away. I trust that the LORD will keep me on his team. However, I still need to be constantly serving him and giving my all to him, as proof that I’m living 100% for him-with no love triangles. I pray that God will continue to help me live all for him!

  73. Austin Jones says:

This parable is a reminder to me of how different people accept or deny the gospel. Some people, like the rocky soil, simply dont give it a chance and they never have life. Others accept it at first, but then they lose interest and give up. And then of course there’s the Christians who accept the gospel, repent, and the result is the 180′ turn from sin. We all need to do our best to soften the rocky soil and plant some serious seeds so that we can expand our garden of Christians until it overwhelms everything else and grows uncontrollably.

It is awesome to see how Jesus does not simply tell a parable and leave the audience to figure out its meaning. After admitting that regardless of the explanation some will not truly see or hear, Jesus explains the soils. God does not leave us empty-handed and confused but makes it evident that everyone who hears the gospel will not respond with repentance and faith. That being the case though, 9 He who has ears, let him hear.” May we be constantly planting seeds… Maranatha

  75. Adam Duarte [True North - 2010] says:

The parable of the sower is one of the greatest analogies for the preaching of the Gospel. There are so many different reactions to it; people who ignore it, people who receive it at first but then fall away at the first sign of trouble; and people who are saved by it. It’s so sad to see people who appear to be on fire for Christ fall away because of the cares of their own life, and the unwillingness to turn from some things.

  76. mady(: says:

I love this analogy to a Christian! Because I have heard the word, and put it to practice (repentance and faith) and i am living my life for Christ, I should be producing a crop. EVANGELISM! This should be my main goal: to help bring other people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ that I have! Its rude NOT to tell people about Jesus! 24Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

THese verses make me want to evangelize and spread the word to others so that i can produce crops! I struggle a lot with evangelizing and i have been praying about that a lot lately. As a christian, i must make disciples of the Lord and make his word known! I strive to be a light, shining Gods glory and mercy! This chapter also makes me thankful that i get the opportunity to hear the gospel and hear the awesome teachings of Jesus Christ here at Compass. A LOT of people do not get that opportunity and that is where i must produce a crop and share the teachings of my Lord and Savior!

There are so many people all around me that are the ones that have fallen on rocky soil and tons of people that are being choked by the weeds of the sinnful world we live in. They are trying to choke out and kill the gospel that I need to be spreading everywhere I go. It is so important to be spreading the seeds of the good news and I want to be doing this at school where most of the students are non christians

    Hey Shhfjwikxjeudhruwi

I am encouraged like Bobby is that you are able to see acknowledge the sin in your life and are confessing it is awesome. I pray that you have someone close to you that is a mentor that you can talk to. It is so important to have someone to talk to in your life about the highs and lows in our spiritual walk with Christ. Everyone has lows including pastors, teachers and leaders. The big difference is that they have Godly brothers and sisters in their lives that can give them sound Biblical encouragement or advice. We as a church body are here to lift each other up when others are down. It is also very important that our faith is in God and not in Man. Man will always disappoint but God will never fail you. I made the mistake of putting my faith in man who is fallible and not exclusively in God and it is a self destructive road.

1 Corinthians 2:5 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

I also will be praying for you that would continue to stand firm and trust in Christ alone.

As a musician I know firsthand how important what you listen to is. It heavily influences your mental state of mind. I love good musicianship but I love God more than I love the music that was not giving Him the Glory.

8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

When the gospel falls on the ears of those who respond in accordance with God’s will, that initial seed will multiply over and over again. Meaning that when one hears and receives the gospel, he then will share the gospel with others who will also believe. This creates a “crop”, so to speak, of believers who will then produce a crop of their own. This is such a beautiful picture of the disciple cycle, where the action of one person initially sharing the gospel, increases over a hundred times because people won’t stop sharing the Gospel!

  82. Haley Litz says:

23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

This is exactly what the right response is!! I want to make sure that I am that person and continually getting into the word and reading it, understanding it, and then applying it!! I will check my heart to make sure I am applying what I read and am not just ignoring it! I don’t want to be like the seed that fell on rocky soil or among thorns, but I want to keep standing strong for the Lord and be a light for Jesus Christ who died for me!!!

These verses are awesome!! Evangelism is so so so so so important! I am called to make disciple. I want to sow good seed in this field, and help to create the kingdom of heaven as i am called to do by my heavenly father!

    Austin that dosent count.

I wish I could be here in this time and hear Jesus speak and all the wisdom he had to share. If a time machine is ever created in my lifetime I will go to this time and see and speak with Jesus…. one day. The Lord Is good. :)
