The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
Return of an Unclean Spirit
43 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! It really does feel good, being accepted by God. I know that not only am I loved as his creation, but I am regarded by him as family, for “doing the will of the Father”

41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
When Jonah preached to Nineveh, the people repented, and though God had planned to destroy them with fire He turned away His wrath and spared them. In the same way that Jonah was sent by God with a message, we have been given the Scriptures and a command to go make disciples as well, and to teach them to obey the Bible (Matthew 28:19-20). God has ensured that men are without excuse for their sin, which means that we are constantly surrounded by people who are still under God’s judgement. It takes a truly callous heart not to care about the souls of all these friends, family members, or even strangers, and yet so often we make no effort at all to share the Truth with them. This should not be. I have some opportunities this break to witness to my relatives, and once school starts again i am surrounded by non-Christians; I need to make every effort to evangelize to them in love, with gentleness and respect, but with a sense of urgency and a genuine care for the state of their salvation.
46 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
This verse stood out to me today. Jesus’ ministry and the call of God on His life was the priority over His earthly family. It is not that Jesus did not love or respect His family, He is proving a point here. The point is that all else must pale in importance when compared to serving God and being used by Him. As a Christian my heart must first be set on God and doing His will in my life. That is a hard thing to do. I have a wonderful husband and a young daughter who I love to spend time with and who need me in practical ways. It is a balance between serving God with my whole heart and being sure that I love my family and fulfill my Biblical role as a wife and mother. Lord, today I ask for the strength to love You and serve You with my life. Help me not to be distracted by other relationships or pleasures and let me think first of You in all things.
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Happy Thanksgiving!!! I’m so thankful that Jesus rose from the dead! If he hadn’t risen from the dead there would be no Christianity, death would have won. I’m so thankful that Jesus conquered death and provided a way for me to be reconciled with God!
Happy Thanksgiving TrueNorth! I am thankful for the work God is doing in and through YOU!
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth
I too am SO thankful for the perfect work of Jesus on the cross…words can’t express my gratitude. I have SO much to be thankful for, the neverending blessings that our God has showered upon me is but a taste of the eternity we have to hope in. But our thanksgiving for ALL things must begin at the reflection of what happened over 2000 years ago in a small town in Israel, when a man of lowly form, his image distorted by wounds unbearable, wearing a crown of thorns, bore a cross down a road as the crowd, His chosen people, who had once accepted him, followed him chose to mock him and crucify him openly… And I wonder what thoughts could be pouring through the head of our precious savior, and then I realize it was me…it was you! And as he hung like a prisoner from a tree with nails and struggled just to breath what did He see? He saw YOU and ME. And then His Father, His perfect Father, crushed him, in fact according to Isaiah 53 He was pleased to crush Him, he was PLEASED to crush Him with the weight of all of my sin and all of yours and pour his wrath upon His precious and beloved son…but why? Because He loved YOU and He loved me! And the pinacle of the redemptive story was accomplished as the King of the Jews bled, hung and died there, all of creation crying as the ground shook below. And in that moment, the victory was WON, it was finished and He conquered death forever. And then three days later rose from the grave, HE HAD WON, and now and forevermore He reigns victoriously in heaven with the Father! It is there that our thanksgiving must always begin both on thanksgiving and each day, and it is from there that we drive motivation and desire to truly love him with ALL OUR HEARTS in response…how could we not.
38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.” i need to work on believing in jesus and not always doubting like the pharisees ant the teachers.
HAPPY DANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Jesus is talking about Jonah in the chapter, and Jesus usually refers people living for the Lord like Moses before his time. Why I’m talking about Jonah is cuz when I talk to people about the Bible, they say they don’t believe that the story of Jonah could never happen so they don’t believe the Bible. I know that I have a hard time believing that story too sometimes, but I just can’t find out who else could possibly create a world…
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers
The point that Jesus is trying to make, is that His followers are His family! If you a follower of Christ, then you are apart of God’s family! You are his sons and daughters. You will live with your family in the New Jerusalem! You have a personal relationship with God!
Happy Thanksgiving!
47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[c]
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
I love these three verses because i feel that God is saying, those who are my followers are my children. Which is so true because in the Bible it says that we are children of God. And it makes me feel so excited to know that i am a part of Gods family that will live on forever!
46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him.
47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[c]
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
It feels so good knowing that God wants to except us as his brothers and sisters! He is trying to show that all else fails when you are serving God. He needs to be first!!
Happy Thanksgiving True North! I’m thankful to be able to serve with you guys!
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth
As I was thinking this morning about what I was thankful for, the first things in my head were the cross and the empty tomb. Jesus died for my sins and rose again to live forevermore! Now that’s worthy of a thanksgiving celebration! It’s all because of Jesus I’m alive!
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
Its such a blessing to be in the family of Christ. However, when Jesus says this, he doesnt mean that we should neglect our earhly families and spend all our time at church; there needs to be a balance. But it is such a great thing so be sons and daughters of God.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! Great posting by the way!
47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[c] 48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
Do we need another demonstration of God’s love for us?? On top of dying that horrible death for us, He says WE are HIS family!! WE! The sinners! The adulterers! The liars, the murderers, the thieves!! Those words might not seem to apply to us, directly, but in some way, we’ve all murdered someone by hating them. and yet God loves us so much, that He crushed His own son. And like Vanessa said, Jesus thought of US as He was crucified. How can I not be thankful?? I am His child because He died and ROSE AGAIN for ME!! and YOU!! How amazingly awesome!!
Another thing I thought of while reading this is something alot of you commented on. We are His family and HE should be priority in our lives instead of our earthly family, friends, or desires. Which is really hard! Yet not with HIm, I am sooo thankful God is here to help me through it all :D THANK YOU LORD!!!!!!
God help me to be focused on you and not myself today and throughout the week. Help me to balance my earthly relationships with my relationship with you that should be my priority!
38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.”
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah
This shows that with wicked mind I won’t see what amazing things. And in a wicked and adulterous generation we all got to stand out without wicked minds.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! Hope you all have a great day!!!
In that today is thanksgiving, when reading this verse i felt thankful. Thankful for the fact the Christ died on the cross and rose again. I also am thankful that we all can look back at Christ’s life and study from it everyday.
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth
I agree with a lot of the posts already about what to be thankful for! I am so thankful for my Salvation and for the spilled blood and crushed bones of Christ who died for my sins! It is all because of Jesus that I’m alive! I am so blessed that I am once of his children and that I can have assurance of spending eternity with him in heaven. There is just so much to be thankful for, and I do not want to take it for granted! I pray that as it is Thanksgiving, that I will check and evaluate my heart and really praise our Lord for everything he has blessed me with and provided me with! Sooo thankful for the cross, praise God!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!!!!!!

47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[c] 48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
We are the family of Christ, and we need to be showing that more in our lives. To show th glory of the Lord. It is just one of those thing to be thankful for today, that the Lord has saved us, and we are his family.
ELLO… I read… its thanksgiving
I like verse 39,”He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.”
I like this verse because it talks about people trying to put JESUS to the test. We aren’t supposed to test JESUS because that is being unfaithful to HIM if you have to test HIM to see if HE is who HE says HE is. If JESUS did miraculous signs for us many people would have faith because they saw HIM we have faith because we know HIM. It if far better to know HIM then see to believe.
CYA
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!! This is a great verse. It talks about how the Lord does not want us to doubt him but rather to have faith in him and live through faith, not by sight. I sometimes feel confused and separated from God, but I pray that no matter what, we will not doubt his existence. That we won’t need miracles to prove how holy the Lord is, but we will live our lives out of faith that we will one day be in heaven and fall face down as his glory shines around.
I am grateful to call you my brothers and sisters, my family in Christ Jesus.
41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one[a] greater than Jonah is here.
Nineveh was at first an evil city full of sin. Jonah was commanded by God to go to the city of Nineveh and preach to the people. After a little detour, Jonah got to Nineveh and preached to the people. They repented of their sins, turning away from the sin that had been living in. Jesus is talking about how He, who is greater than Jonah, is preaching to the people and telling them to repent. He says that the men of Nineveh will look down upon and condemn the generation Jesus was speaking to, for Jesus himself was there speaking to them and commanding them to repent, and many wouldn’t. And the generation of people right now here on this earth aren’t all into repenting of their sins and putting their trust in Christ, either. So many people are only living to enjoy themselves, to live “the good life”, or so they think it is, and live it up in the pleasures of this world. As Jonah spoke to the Ninevites, and Jesus spoke to the crowds in His day, I need to be bold today as I stand up and speak to the people of this generation. Much of “Christianity” today is all watered down. I need to make a stand for sound doctrine, not that I have any special knowledge, but that I directly follow everything that the Bible has to say! I need to stand against the world to proclaim the truth of the Bible. Though I can’t speak to everybody across the world, it starts right here: REVIVAL in the OC! I need to be Gospel Crazy as I live my life here, that I am bearing strong witness to Jesus Christ. I need to be all about sharing the gospel with others, not backing down, but living strong without fear to never stop standing! Happy Thanksgiving!
Great comment Mike!i always learn a lot from your insight on what we read, thankyou for that!!
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth
Like everyone else, I am so grateful for the humble sacrifice made by our Lord Jesus Christ. Without Him, i would have been struck dead many times by now. I know that I take His love for granted, without even thinking about it, and i want to change that. I know ive said this before, but i know that i never could have taken the spot of Christ on the cross. It is so important for me to realize the courage and faithfulness towards God that Jesus displayed. Though slaughter is the worst way to die, Jesus obeyed God and took up His cross for us. I am so undeserving of His love and I am so thankful for Jesus’ display of ultimate, true love and sacrifice. I hope that this Thanksgiving, Ill really take more time to really grasp the pain Christ endured, the love he has for me, and the obedience he fulfilled. Thankyou God for sending Your Son down on this sinful earth to save us from an eternity in darkness!Maranatha!!
Man, I am so thankful for God today!
Jesus states that one who is greater than Solomon, the wisest man that lived, and one greater than Jonah, a prophet, is here. Obviously, he is talking about himself. I’m thankful that Jesus is greater than any man or prophet. I love reading about how awesome my savior is it just reminds me of Hebrews 1 where the author takes an entire chapter saying how Jesus is even better than the angels.
OUR SAVIOR IS THE BEST!
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
I am SO thankful for Jesus’ death and resurrection!! He died a horrible death just so that I may live! WOW… What amazing love (John 3:16)… I’m thanking God for all He’s done for me today from creating me and the ones I love, to saving me and saving many of the ones i love too.. He is so GOOD!! :)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
42The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
Jonny I am with you. Jesus is the best and better and greater than all other things on this earth. God is great and I want to thank Him for all He has done, not just today but the days to come! Glory be to God in the highest!
***Thank the KING!!!***
I, too am grateful to God for the empty tomb and His death-conquering resurrection as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ. I do have a special ache in my heart for my family members that are going to hell and pray now that God will move in their lives! Marantha!
Happy Thanksgiving!! i am thankful for so much the Lord has given me…i am truly blessed to be where i am today, only because of the Lord Jesus Christ. everyday should be a day of thanksgiving for me, not only today…so i want to work on being thankful to God more and more.
MARANATHA!!!!!!
I read! I am so thankful for everything i have and for my relationship with God. It’s awesome to know he chose me to experience eternal life with him! I’m thankful for my family and friends and all the things i have been blessed with!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING:)
READ THIS POST PLEASE!!! Happy Thanksgiving.
for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,
People are not going to repent of their sins unless someone is preaching or sharing the gospel to them. This Thanksgiving a lot of us will be spending time with our pagan family members. Don’t just eat Turkey and tell jokes. Take the time to share the truth of Jesus Christ with your family. At dinner have everyone go around the table and say what they are thankful for. When its your turn, Praise God for everything he has done for you, praise him for salvation, for life, for every good thing. Lets use this day to bring Glory to Him!! Praying for an opportunity to share Christ with my atheist cousin and for others to be bold and stand up for Christ this Thanksgiving.
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
God called it (as Pastor Mike said in a series of sermons a while back). God consistently predicts the future throughout Scripture. He did it frequently and specifically. The gospel of Jesus dying and rising again was predicted not only by the OT prophets but by Jesus himself. There is nobody else who I want to put my trust in to make me right with God. Nobody else has demonstrated that they have power over death. I want to give thanks for Jesus and the gospel not only today but everyday of my life!
Matthew 12:40 “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
Jesus died, was buried three days in the ground, and then he rose again, alive and well on the third day! I am so thankful for the resurrection of Jesus! Because He conquered the grave I have access to a living Hope, that even when I die—I live (John 11:25)!
Praise to the Lamb who sits on the throne—be all glory and honor and praise! Happy Thanksgiving!! I can’t wait for Double It Up Worship Night!
47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[c] 48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
I like theses verses because they remind me that my true brothers and sisters are in Christ. Those should be my closest friends. I am so thankful for all of my great Christian friends and examples. Happy Thanksgiving!
ThankYou Lord for all my Brothers and Sisters in You!!!
HappY ThanksGiving Everbody!!
47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[c] 48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
:)We are all together one in the Lord, my brothers and sisters. ThankYou Lord for our Salvation, We are all family in Christ!

49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
i am so thankful for all of the brothers and sisters i have in Christ! here Jesus is telling us how important relationships with siblings in Christ are. He is not putting down His earthly family or earthly family in general, but the people we are to be closest with are in our spiritual family. we are called to meet together, to encourage each other, to spur each other on, and to help make each other holy. i pray that i would always be thankful for my siblings in Christ, and live not for myself, but to serve them and to serve God. lets be praising God for all of His blessings this thanksgiving!
41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one[a] greater than Jonah is here.
That is so cool that they repented at the preaching of Jonah. It would soooo cool if people repented after I preached at the campus lunch. lets pray that people will be saved at the campus lunches this year.
I think we missed verse 50 which says, “‘For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’”
Great chapter!! happy thanksgiving and God Bless you all!!!!!
Hey Wesley! I just fixed it! Thanks for point that out!
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
And what a great verses it is that we can be brothers and sisters in Christ. I am so thankful for Jesus! I want to tell others about him everyday and declare his praises! I am also thankful for my brothers and sisters in Christ at True North! God has saved so many of you and I love the fellowship that we can enjoy!
Happy Thanksgiving brothers and sisters in Christ :)!
awwww yesterday only 90 comments :( let’s keep shooting for triple digits!
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
These days are really tough wicked days because people are so unbelieving it’s sad. Like they need some sort of sign to prove that God exists. Like the gospel isn’t enough for them but besides that there’s all of creation and the prophecies fulfilled, Jesus’ resurrection with eyewitnesses, and so much historical & archaeological evidence that supports the Bible. They need some huge, miraculous sign but it says that none will be given to them. If they can’t believe in the small things then how can they believe in the big ones.
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
I never really understood the second part of this. Is Jesus going to spend time in the middle of the earth? Or is it just an allusion to His time in the tomb? I think that it’s referring somewhat to the 3 days when He is dead and then the resurrection.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
It really is a great verse. It tells us how exactly we are in the kingdom of heaven. If we follow God’s commands and do what He wants us to, we are brothers and sisters in Christ. We need to make sure that we are following God’s laws at all times with a willing heart ready to serve Him.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
I hope that everyone has a wonderful thanksgiving and that they will be [raising and thanking god for the wonderful meals that they are going to eat and all the wonderful things that he does for us:)
This section to me showed that Jesus Is greater than all others and that we shud be worshipping him and not earthl things
47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers
This verse is so touching and great! Like Lizzie said, WE- the adulterers, the lierd, the sinners- Jesus thinks of US as his family!! It is so amazing ans wonderful!! i have to work on concentrating on this and on the Lord (keep my eyes on heaven and on what Jesus Christ sacrificed for us) and not think about my life and my problems. Because no matter how much i stress about it and worry about it i can never fix anything without God! Maranatha!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
I like these verses for two reasons. First of all, it really reflects that the ~whole~ bible is about Jesus Christ and His salvation, not just the New Testament. He is predicted by Jonah’s travels and I had never seen that before. Second, the verses truly show how amazing God’s gift of salvation and Jesus’ resurrection are. Jesus performs many “miracles,” but He says that man will not see any miracles other than His death and resurrection. According to Jesus, all the things He did while here on Earth (healing the blind, turning the water into wine, walking on water, etc) are NOTHING compared to the sacrifice He makes for us and the miracle of His resurrection and ascension into Heaven. God, I am truly thankful for the gift You have given me, a sinner, who doesn’t deserve it. Thank you so much Lord.

40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth
What an awesome reminder on Thanksgiving! One of the things I am thankful for today is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ! Praise the Lord that he graciously forgave my sin. It’s only because of the cross that I get to live for eternity with my Father! This is one thing to really be thankful for today!
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
i agree with you Bobby and Allen
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
This is a good reminder to me about how, as Christians, we’re all brothers and sisters. Christ has brought us together, from all different walks of life, and in Him we’re all made family. Praise be to Jesus Christ for this life He has given us! I’m thankful for such wonderful, encouraging brothers and sisters in Christ.
Happy Thanksgiving, True North!
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Like a lot of other people on here today I am extremly thankfull for my salvation! Jesus Christ conquered my sin, overcame death, and rose from the dead proving His deity and making a relationship with Him possible. I love my God! He is truely the Lord of lords .
41The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
It’s amazing how Nineveh repented without seeing any signs. they just knew that they needed to change so they did the second that they heard. it gives no excuse for anyone. once they have heard they have been forewarned, and they can’t expect God to give them the sign that they want in order to convince them. although he might, it won’t happen to everyone.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
everyone who has truely repented and put there full faith in Christs sacrifice is my brother and sister. they need to be as close to me as a brother or sister would be. i am soooo thankful for the many brothers and sisters God has put in my life.
MARANATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
I need to love those who love Christ as if they are my blood family. If Christ is in my heart, and also in another’s, it should not matter if I know them or have a relationship with them. For if we are Christians, our most important characteristics/values should be the same, creating a special, unbreakable bond between us.
Hope that makes a lick of sense, I’m intoxicated with turkey, stuffing, fruit salad, green bean casserole, and pie!
42The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
Jesus used stories that the people would instantly recognize. I thought that was cool because now we can look back. Solomon was a realy amazing guy, yet Jesus is a hundred times better than he. Jesus was the only on to ever defeat death, and now He is our Lord. That is something to be thankful for!
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
How awesome to read on Thanksgiving about Jesus predicting His own death and resurrection! I’m thankful for my salvation and the salvation of my friends and family. It’s a such a beautiful feeling to know that we’ll be together in heaven one day! It makes me want to make sure that I tell others the good news of the gospel so that they can be saved and gain eternal life too. Maranatha!!!!
Good evening . . .
I read . . .
Matthew 12:38 – 49 . . .
“50. For whoever does the will of my Father in Heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Jesus said this because He wanted to defend the fact that Mary wasn’t His actual mother. But instead, Jesus is saying in this verse that the people who obey his command and will are Jesus’ brothers, sisters, and mothers. It makes me genuinly happy to think about when I fullfill one of God’s commands for me, He’s happy with me. He’s pleased with the fact that I got baptized. Because by getting baptized, I fulfilled a command. Just like the relationship between a child and father. When a child listens, obeys, and does what the father tells him/her, the father will become joyous. (glad) Same with my Heavenly Father. When I do something for Him or fulfill one of His wills, HE’S HAPPY! Knowing that makes me happy also. It honestly brings a smile upon my face.

Jesus,
I thank you for blessing me with the many things that I don’t deserve as a sinful human. But it is by your Grace and Mercy that you have given me all these wonderful things. I LOVE YOU! ~ Amen
I am thankfull for God and being able to spread his love with others…. and for my health, and family etc….
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
- I need to learn to love others unconditionally, and love my enemies, and be brothers and sisters with others through CHRIST!!!!
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
It is so awesome to think that we are in Jesus’ family if we serve the LORD and put our trust in him! To think that He, the King of the entire universe, calls me part of his family if I do God’s will? WOW! That makes me so encouraged to want to obey and do the LORD in everything I do. I don’t want to ever disobey him! I feel bad when I disobey my earthly father, and feel even worse when I disobey God. To think how much more I should be striving to obey him and be righteous! I pray that I can please the LORD in everything!
PRAISE THE LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!!
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Great Scripture, and what a great day to thank God for everything that He has done!
We all need to be grateful God’s team, bar none at that. He has so much mercy and grace for us that its unimaginable. He’s coming back, and He’s going to judge. So we should not forget, but instead praise Him and learn about Him for all that we can! GO TEAM!
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
What more is there to be thankful for on Thanksgiving, then the blood shed at the cross!
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
I’m excited to do God’s will from this verse. I want to be Jesus’ brother ans as God’s son, I am recognized by my fruits so this verse encourages me to do things for God and do His will. Thank you for everything you have given me God, all that I do not deserve, thank you.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!! :)
Reading through Matthew, its really cool to see all of Jesus’ responses to the people and also to the Pharisees and Saducees. He is so wise in what he says and he is never out-smarted by anyone! He is alsways ready to defend what he has to say with Scripture and with what God has to say. I need to be able to know what I am talking about when people ask me about the Bible or about God. This gives me all the more reason to be in God’s word more!!!!
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
I am so thankful to be a part of God’s family! Guys, WE are the body of Christ. Isn’t that so cool? Today was a wonderful reminder to just be super thankful for where God has me in my life and I want to praise him for everything that he has done for me. I look at everything he has given me, health, friends, family, a wonderful church, and it is only by his grace that I have it. Thank you Jesus <3
This day has been freat and to be on scripture makes this day even better. I want to thank God for sending his one and only son down to earth. Also for paying the price for our sins. For I know the price was the blood of Jesus. That alone shows that God loved us so much. This reminds me of John 3:16. Since my brother does awana I hear this verse a lot from him. I want to thank everyone at True North for making a differnce in my life and I hope to stay in touch with you all of guys. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!
48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
I think it’s so cool that Jesus calls all these people his sisters, brothers, and mothers. It is so awesome to be able to say that I am apart of God’s family when I obey Christ’s commands fully. I am soo thankful for my sisters, brothers, and whole church family at True North!! God has blessed me with such an awesome church to go to where Christianity is preached straight from the true source! Praise God for Compass Bible Church(:
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
it exctes me to read this and think about how i am a family member of God. it also makes me think about how sinful i am and how much i am in debt to Him. there is no way for me to work my way out of my sin and i am thankful to have God
Wow these Pharises just will not give up. I cant believe that they have not realized that Jesus is God and you can not trick him.
Happy thanksgiving everyone! I am so thankful that the Lord has placed me at this church. I am so grateful that i have met so many amazing people that are my brothers and sisters in Christ and that i have become so close to the church! Praise the Lord!!!!
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
This is a good verse! I must live out the Christian life and be 100% committed to it, or else i will fall away. If i do the will of my Father in heaven then i will be called His daughter and siblings of those who do His will. I have been praying that i will have the right heart and that i will have a full heart for the Lord! I want and strive to give my life to the Lord and let absolutely nothing get in the way and interfere! The Lord deserves so much and i feel sometimes like i dont even try to show the Lord love or give my life to Him! That will be my prayer and my goal. THat i can live our the Christian life and do the will of my Father in Heaven so that i might be rewarded with eternal life in Heaven! That sounds good to me (:
I’m so thankful for my church family! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
When we become Christians, we automatically become part of Jesus’ family. What an INCREDIBLE thing. Jesus takes care of his children, he loves them and disciplines them, and to be his child is the most amazing thing in the entire world! I cannot imagine the kind of love he has for me and I cannot wait to see him face to face in Heaven!!!!
I am so thankful for all my brothers and sisters in Christ<33 happy thankgiving everyone!!
I really like the ending of this chapter!!! It makes me think of the family that we have in the church, the people that we have to lean on in times of trouble!! On this thanksgiving i am just so thankful for all of the amazing brothers and sisters in Christ that i have!! Thankful for all of the people that are there for me when i fall and are there for me in times of trouble!!!
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
As Christians, we have an even strong familial bond than we do with our biological family! It’s sad to me that we do not always treat each other like that though (and that I often do not treat my brothers in Christ rightly, with love).
Lord, please grant me the same kind of love for my spiritual family that You had for them.
38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.”
Its sad how many people only followed Jesus just to see miraculous signs. We should be able to trust Jesus and know that he has a lot of power without having to see any miracles. I need to work on having a stronger faith.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING! :)
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.”
The Pharisees and teachers want Jesus to prove to them that he can do miracles…Jesus’s comback wrecks them!
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Jesus tells them straight up that they are wicked people….which they are. They want to do nothing but trap Jesus and wrek Him…..But Jesus turns the card on them and once again….NO ONE CAN STUMP JESUS!
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Being a sister in Christ is not about just calling yourself one, a Christian. It’s about DOING something. With God, we should become more righteous and more obedient. Just saying we are Christians does not mean anything unless our lives reflect it.
45Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
This is so interesting to me. I love finding scriptures which when you think about everything in the past and present, you can prove how relevant and true it is. I obviously think that the moral quality of each generation has decreased over time just like the Bible says the earth is going to wear away like a garmet–so will the sensiblility of each generation in this world. That is why it is so important as Christians that we not conform to this world but stick out like shining lights for Christ. I am so thankful that although America is a spoiled country in many ways, we do have a holiday to give thanks. I am truly thankful for everything and everyone God has put in my life and for the lessons he has taught me.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
This verse also stuck out to me! How awesome is it that I am apart of Jesus’ family? I am so thankful for Christ and his sacrifice for my sins and want to praise him all day long!!!
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Wow! I never noticed this parallel in scripture. But since it’s thanksgiving, I am so thankful that Christ did die and spend three days in the grave. But then He rose oh so victoriously, defeating death, and giving us eternal life! If there is anything to be thankful for, this tops all of them!
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
wow…wicked and adulterous generation. Throughout the OT we see God calling the Israelites adulterous. That is something I never want to be called…especially when it referes to me cheating on God. What is worse than say that you are all for God, would do anything for him…but then in the end you are really just unfaithful. I pray I stay faithful to my Lord and seek nothing else but him and his glory.
48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
These 3 verses really stood out to me. It really emphasizes the importance of looking past the familial relation we have on this earth and focusing on Christians being the body of Christ, His family. A lot of times I’m really timid with people, even at Church, but I really need to think of every Christian as part of my family, as we are all together in striving to do the will of God.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING! i am so thankful for each and every one of my brothers and sisters in christ here at true north (:
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
I think it is absolutely awesome that i get to be a part of the Lords family! I am so thankful that he has brought me into his arms and saved me from hell! I am so thankful that i will be spending eternity with him in heaven! MARANATHA!!!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Its so great to see and read all the comments, im really loving reading Matthew and reading about all his awesome miracles!
48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Sorry I wasn’t able to post on the actual day, but I was not able to get internet acess. We’re on vacation. This verse seems a bit harsh, right? but think about it, JESUS also says that anyone who loves his father or mother more than him is not worthy of him. This seems to be the same kind of thing.
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Sometimes its hard for me to recognize my brothers and sisters in christ as my family, and sometimes I don’t treat them like family should be treated. Just like Jesus had love for his disciples, I want to be able to treat my christian family with love and respect.
50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
As Christians, we are all in one family together, under the Lord. Yet unfortunately, some of us get angry at each other, hurt and bash one another… we need to rise up against this and love everyone who is a fellow child under the Lord God!1
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Jesus, who knew the Word like the back of His hand, was using the story of Jonahs as an example of what was coming. Jesus pretty much gave them all a billion hints on what was going to occur but God blinded their eyes so they did not see what was ahead of them…And then I see how Jesus’ brothers were. They didn’t repent until after His death….can you imagine being His brother? I know I would be soooo jealous of Him and His attention. God would definitely blind me as well until His death..It reminds me of all the blinded now. God will open their eyes in due time and I pray for God to come! MARANATHA! :)
40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Jonah was punished for his sins but God kept Him safe inside the huge fish. I am so thankful for all God has given me. Thank you God for dieng on the cross for my sins. I owe you my life.
39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah
It is sad that these people need a miracle to believe Jesus is the Son of God. They cant tell by the works Jesus does??? Many people in this generation do this as well. They want to see something miraculous happen in order to believe in God. I would tell them to just look around, where we are living and the beauty that God has created is more than enough to show them that there is a God and he is the Creator of this world!!!!
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
