Messengers from John the Baptist
11:1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,
“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’
11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,
17 “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”
Woe to Unrepentant Cities
20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”
Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest
25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (ESV)

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
I can’t believe that the 3 cities that Jesus did most of His miracles at did not repent of their worldly ways… In the next verse, “woe” is very different than the woah most people use… this one basically means destruction is coming – watch out. Oh, and look what Jesus says after that!
22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
They get woed upon by Jesus! An sure enough, they are currently great piles of rocks that used to be cities. When Jesus says to repent for the end is near, we need to take Him as the truth and tell everyone as well!!!!
P.S. Is this verse a little remark about how prophesying doesn’t happen anymore?

The only happiness that anyone can ever find isn’t from material things of the world. It comes from salvation from God. Life won’t necessarilly be easy, but we will have peace. With Jesus, i have nothing to fear or worry about.

This passage is so comforting for me to read. It shows that I can bring anything to him and lay it all there and he will take it and make the burden less. How easy it is. Then why don’t we all do so?

This passage makes me want to worship and praise my Jesus for the salvation that He has given me! In Him we find rest for our souls and we don’t need to be scared of His yoke for although His Word calls us to holiness, and obedience, His commandments are just and good. We are called to a life of self denial, to take up our cross and follow Him but we are rewarded abundantly both now, in our hearts and in the future which is yet to come. Matthew Henry said, “.So powerful are the assistances he gives us, so suitable the encouragements, and so strong the consolations to be found in the way of duty, that we may truly say, it is a yoke of pleasantness. The way of duty is the way of rest. The truths Christ teaches are such as we may venture our souls upon. Such is the Redeemer’s mercy; and why should the labouring and burdened sinner seek for rest from any other quarter? Let us come to him daily, for deliverance from wrath and guilt, from sin and Satan, from all our cares, fears, and sorrows. But forced obedience, far from being easy and light, is a heavy burden. In vain do we draw near to Jesus with our lips, while the heart is far from him. Then come to Jesus to find rest for your souls.”

Doesn’t seem like things have changed much in 2000 years, whether we are at school or at work or in the Marketplace (Spectrum); this area is ripe with non-believers and those who have heard “the Truth”, but have not responded. Let God use you for His work today!
25At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
26Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
This verse stirred gratitude in my heart because it shows that those who are wise in the world’s eyes are not at an advantage to become Christians, That is hopeful for someone like me who is just your average, ordinary woman. I love is how verse 26 says that is was the Father’s “good pleasure” to require faith and humility as the foundation to respond to the Spirit’s call to repentance and faith. The “little children” analogy is so true. If we have simple faith, trust in God the way my little daughter trusts me in everything, then we will have open hearts and be able to understand and receive the gospel. The Pharisees missed their own Messiah because they were proud and refused to admit that they were spiritually sick, in need of a Savior. My prayer today is that there would be no True Norther who is relying on his/her intellect, talents or abilities to enter the kingdom of God. The Pharisees are a tragic example of how our own resumes get us nowhere with God. The only way to come to Him is to humble ourselves and follow the Spirit’s lead to the cross!

i like these verses because it’s great knowing we have a God who loves us and wants us to be with Him. We need to reply on God with our needs and trust that he will set us straight!
God is role model for all of us and he pretty much says that in verse 29. We should be gentle and humbling toward God and our authorities and piers. If we do these things God promises us that our souls will be at peace. I love when God promises things because it’s one we can trust!!

I like verse 28,”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
I like this verse because it shows how generous GOD is and how much HE is worth. HE offers us a chance and it is free well technically you have to give up sinning and it isn’t a burden when you give it up. GOD has given us everything in exchange HE wants us to glorify and serve HIM it seems more than fair for us. I need to think of what HE has done for me when any kind of temptation comes along so I can get it out of my mind and away from being done.

God is saying: COME AND REST UPON ME. I WILL QUENCH YOUR THIRST, COMFORT THE BURDENED.
I cannot say how comforting this verse is to me right now. I’m going through a trial that God has put me in and I’m thanking Him for it. Not only should I be thanking Him for it, but most importantly I need to RUN TO HIM FOR COMFORT AND CARE! I know that my God will hold me and take the burden off of me. He loves his daughter, and at the same time He won’t give me a trial I cannnot handle. JESUS I THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know you are putting me through this for a reason. Even though I may not know what that reason may be, I know You have a reason for EVERYTHING. Sounds like a good reason to desire Christ in your life to me. Without Him, there is nothing but unrest and suffering in our lives. Without Christ, I would be in a much worse place, and not at peace. It’s a shame when people turn away from Him because they think that they can make it on their own. I learned last year that as much as you may think you can, you can’t make it without making Christ the center of your life, and by putting your hope in Him, not in this world.

This verse really stuck out to me because it gives us a little insight into the relationship between God and Jesus and how we are a part of that. Once again we see that we did not choose Christ but he chose us. We can not know the father unless Jesus chooses to reveal him to us. Everything I know about God every time I experience his over abounding love or his gentle but firm discipline is revealed to me because Christ chose to reveal it. All truth and wisdom are given from Jesus to us. Because of Jesus we now have access to the Father. The veil was torn and we can enter into the holy place with him where we are. It was Jesus who made the way. It was him who chose me. Christ who snatched me from the flaming fires of hell and made a way for me to commune with the God of the universe. I am so grateful thankful and praise his holy name for all that he has done, I bet we only get to see glimpses on this earth of the what it truly means to be called a child of God and to know our Father as Christ knows him, and I can’t wait for the day when all mysteries will be revealed and we will have a perfect and complete understanding of all things. It makes me say MARANATHA!

this is a great verse because it tells us that Christ is the only way to The Father. This verse would be great to use when out evangelizing or trying to assure a friend in the faith.
Matthew 11:6 “Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”
Even though trials and temptations will come, in aims to entice me to “sit down”, I know in the end it will be worth it to “keep standing” for Jesus! Jesus says there is a blessing in store for those who don’t fall away on account of Him. That is why I want to continue in Him strong. I want to keep walking on the narrow road to life…even though few are on it—it leads to life. And by God’s grace I will stand firm until the end!

I think that it is shocking how these cities heard the truth, yet still did not repent. There will be the day of judgement and a time where it will be too late! This is a motivation for me to evangelize more and to make the most of every opportunity before it is too late. I do not want people to burn in hell because they did not hear the truth when they could have heard it from me!

P delicious. SO! Jesus finds Himself basically cursing the cities for not repenting and turning from their sin. It was a HUGE insult for them when He compared it to Sodom. HUGE….but completely true. Sodom and Gomorra(??spelling?) didn’t have the miracles performed by the son of God Himself in the city but these cities did and yet they still didn’t repent and trust in Him…I look at today and do we have Jesus? technically the Holy Spirit is there in Christians..so why do people not believe? I think that our lifestyle, the way we live, should be proof enough. Buuuuuut I know that I sin and that causes them to disbelieve or stumble..which is bad! I need to constantly be checking to see if I’m living that life that is worthy before the Lord so that others may see and believe that there is something more to this world and it’s Jesus Christ.

Jesus is saying that Sodom who had it’s city burned with fire by the wrath of God is better off on judgment day, than these three cities because Jesus was there doing miracles and preaching about the kingdom and they didn’t repent.

my study Bible says that this verse means that Jesus is giving us rest from trying to earn our own salvation. before we were converted, we were trying to do good works to get to heaven, and trying to please God by our works. but that of course doesnt work, because God demands holiness, and all sin and fall short of the glory of God. but Christ did live a perfect, holy life, and by His grace we are saved. no longer do i have to work at my salvation (which would ultimately fail), but God has given me rest. now i can trust in God and His saving power, and not my own tarnished works. i need to praise God for the rest that He has given me, and for the awesome thing that He did for me in Christ Jesus. i pray that i am unashamed of this great news, and that i am constantly evangelizing and telling others of the rest that Christ provides for those who trust in Him. John was an incredible person!! Even in prison, He is still trying to find the messiah, no matter what the cost!! It made me think about whether or not I eagerly search for Christ in my daily routine, like John did. This is why I loveeee SOTD and DBR!! May Christ be my focus and center everyday this week!!

I want some of that rest right now! It seems that so often we are caught up in the struggles and turmoils of this life, and if we would just stop and pray and connect with God, we will find peace and clarity in our life.

John was wondering whether Jesus was the Messiah. In repy Jesus says, just check my credentials. You have to admit that giving blind people sight, curing the diseased and raising the dead are pretty impressive credentials. What other religous founder in all of history can point to anything close to this on their resume? If someone claims to be the one way to heaven (John 14:6) you gotta wonder whether what he is saying is legit. Joseph Smith, whatta you got? Muhamed and Buddah what are you bringing to the table? Jesus backed his claim up by breaking the laws of nature as evidence. It is interesting too that nobody is arguing with what he is saying like “Jesus claimed to have cured sick people and raise people from the dead, but nobody has seen it yet.” Everyone saw it and could attest to it. Even the Jews who were against him had to conceed that he did the miracles. This gives me great confidence that what Jesus said in John 14:6 is true:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

There is a song on this passage. It is amazing. Anyway, this is such a comforting statement that Jesus made! I don’t really have words to describe how this makes me feel and how this gives me a whole different, and better perspective of Jesus Christ my Savior! He loves us sooooo much that he came, lived a perfect life in a fallen world, died a horrible death he did not deserve, and then raised from the dead like the Mighty God he is…ALL for us so that we may live when we deserve death. How amazing is THAT?! Would you do that for someone that has wronged you? Or even someone you love? Would you live that life, die that death….all for them? Something to really think and meditate on.

These verses show how amazing the Lord is. He is so perfect and everyday we should be striving to live like him. I love verse 28 and how is says come to me all who are weary and burdened. This is amazing because it is so easy to go to people with my problems instead of the Lord.

such a cool verse! just in these few words, there is so much comfort and assurence. i love this verse because God is telling us to come to HIM with our burdens… and HE will give us rest. It’s only God who can satisfy us… and it’s only HIM who will give us rest. So anytime i’m stuggeling i need to run to HIM!!!! God is sooo good!

Everytime I feel overwhelmed and stressed, I need to give my burden to God. There’s no reason to worry, God has a plan and is in control. By surrendering all my fears and burdens to Him, I am putting complete trust in Him. It’s sometimes automatic to think we have to do everything ourselves but we are not in charge: God is. I need to give it all up to Him because He is wise and merciful. God will “find rest for my soul.” God is so good!:) It’s a comforting thought just thinking about this verse.
I am going to talk about verses 20-24
While reading this passage, I thought, “Will judgment be easier for some that others?”
I believe the answer is yes. Proof is found in verses 22 and 24. And I believe it all comes down to the point of knowingly disobeying, and disobeying in complete ignorance. Which makes me think that, “God will judge people to the extent they know about the Bible, or something like that.”
Luke 12:47-8 gives a similar scenario. Basically there are two servants.
1) the first servant knows the master’s will, yet disobeys it
punishment: he will beaten with many blows
2) the second servant does not know the things deserving punishment
punishment: he will be beaten with few blows
How can I apply this to my life?
I can’t just look at other people, and say, “my life is better than theirs,” or. “i’m better than most people at my school. Rather, I should strive for holiness, because I know that one day I will face judgment.

These verses and the following ones may seem a bit confusing at first, but essentially Jesus is rebuking the Pharisees and others of being childish. When John the Baptist came preaching repentance, they mocked him as being too radically outcast, as referenced by the dirge. But when Jesus, who has the same message but a more “normal” approach, enters the scene, they reject Him too. So they had no excuse; they would not accept the message of Truth under any circumstances. This passage reminds me of the different denominations within Biblical Christianity. There are some differences in tradition and some minor issues, and the apostle Paul warns not to allow these things to cause major disputes. But when it comes to the truth about who Jesus Christ is and the way of salvation, we need to be uncompromising and unwavering in our faith. It works in evangelism too; there are so many issues that you can get sidetracked on when talking to people, and so never reach the heart of the issue; but I need to make sure that I keep the conversations centered around Christ and His sacrifice as the only way to heaven.

OOOOOOOO this sounds intense! Even when Jesus did miracles some people still did not repent! Wow, they must have been pretty hard-hearted! Because these people did not repent, Jesus is not liking them! I don’t want to be in that position! This chapter and verse show how much God hates it when people don’t repent, and actually change their lives. This makes me want to check my heart and sin that I have, and repnent of that, so I can get that out of the way, and not be distracted with my walk with God!

these three verses, i like alot because they encourage me in putting my trust in God more and giving him my worries, stresses, and burdens. giving him everything will relieve me of a heavy yoke. taking the Lords yoke will be light and easier.

This verse stood out to me the most because it truly shows what great miracles Jesus had preformed while still a man on earth. And I think that we should all recognize the miracles that God gives us. And i will admit sometimes I do forget of how lucky I am for having a family, food, a house, ect. and most people dont realize how much they love someone or something until its taken away. But we should be wise and recognize how lucky we are to have everything we have, and more important to know we have God that forgives and loves us!

I definitely have those days when I feel like my soul is heavy and misserable…but who is always there?!? GOD. God has always been there for me when I need Him. I always find rest and encouragement in Christ, and I am very THANKFUL for it!
“Come near to God and He will come near to you.” -James 4:8

This verse is so true today as it was then. Those who come in GOD’s name are always persecuted because they stir up guilt among the people of the earth. They are slandered, but remember, GOD himself was persecuted before us.

I love this summary from Jesus Himself about His actions. He spells out the proof for John the Baptist that He is indeed the Savior John had foretold. I also love that Jesus gives equal importance in this list to both raising the dead and preaching the good news to the poor. Jesus is God and is and was so powerful that he could just as easily raise the dead as preach the good news…and they were both crucial elements of His ministry…so much so that He selected these four items to say to John the Baptist.

13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
It’s so profound how God’s timing is perfect. The whole point of all the OT writtings (the Law & Prophets were ways to label the OT division of books) were to point to one culminating event: God’s redemption of man through the life, death, & resurrection of the God-man, The Christ! Certainly they prophecied predictively about future events, but a prophet also was simply a mouthpiece for God, telling the people what God wants from them. Sometimes this included predicting the future to prove God’s authorship. Here, John’s role is similar, but different; he’s a contemporary with Christ, so he’s simply pointing to his (alive!) cousin & saying, “hey, he’s the God-man!” John’s day was unique since Christ lived then…imagine that! Plus, Christ says that there’s no one greater than John–wow, what a statement!
Matthew 11:27-29
Jesus truly is the Lord, and God is Jesus. If we put our trust and faith in Jesus, then he will give us extreme comfort. This wont be worldly comfort, because the world will always persecute us. But instead Jesus brings an amazing spiritual rest that gives us eternal life.

God’s love in salvation is so amazing because without it I could be spending all my life desperately trying to save myself, but it would all be in vain. But when we put our faith in Jesus, we can have rest knowing that we are going to forever be in His presence and that nothing can take that away. LORD, thank you so much for your salvation and that no matter what we can have peace knowing that we are going to soon be with you. Please help me not to worry about any of these temporary things because they will just pass away but please help me to grow and grow in anticipation, joy, and peace knowing that I am soon going to be with you forever. Please help me to have such a joy so that nothing will sway me from my whole-hearted pursuit of you.

We should be telling people everyday how amazing God is. Jesus was able to do the most incredible and indescribible things and it goes right over most peoples heads. Jesus was the most amazing and powerful person to ever walk the earth. We should not get use to the fact that Jesus was able to do unimaginable things like make the blind see and make the dead alive. This verse was a great reminder to me about how praise-worthy Christ is.

15 He who has ears, let him hear.
Such a simple but powerful verse! Jesus is warning his audience to truly listen to His teachings and the word of God because the day of judgement is coming. Many people heard Jesus (as He points out in this chapter) but didn’t truly listen to his words–meaning they didn’t take the words seriously and turn those words into actions. They didn’t repent of their sins and instead continued their wicked ways. This chapter reminded me of James 1:22-25. I can’t really claim to be a Christian if I don’t take God’s word seriously and truly pursue a life of obedience and holiness. And how can I “hear” what God is telling me, if I’m not reading His word? I’m so happy that there’s been a spike in comments on SOTD lately, but I’m praying that everyone at TN will continue to “hear” what God has to say to us by staying committed to reading the Bible each day.

This is soooo awesome!! Jesus performed all of these miracles just so the same people that hated him would repent and be saved. If Jesus could do all this, the only explanation is that he was the son of God, and he deserved all the glory and praise. Praise the Lord!! I pray that we all would bring glory to God in all that we do and that we praise his name with whole hearts.

These words are so comforting. Believe in Jesus and what He has done for us, and we will find peace and will never be alone. Not only is Jesus the path to Heaven, but He also teaches us how to conduct our worldly life before our eternal one. I need to give everything I have to Jesus, leaning on Him in good or bad and to use the instructions He has laid out for me so that I will distance myself from sin.

There are so many times in my life when something negative happens, and my immediate reaction is sadness. But when I read this verse I’m reminded of the omnipresence of God and the strength that he carries, I’m put at ease and feel like a child being protected by a Father. Every time I feel lonely or scared, I just remember that God is there with me and all my loneliness goes away. It’s no surprise that the non-Christians at school are so sad and lonely all the time. They have all of their burdens to carry and they have noone to turn to. Just one more reason why everyone needs Jesus. Praise the LORD.

We might not all be hunched over tired from work everyday, but I know there are things in life that are stressful and that bring us down emotionally. This verse reminds me of the first girls workshop. Christa said that instead of going to our friends for advice first, we should go straight to the one who knows the master plan! God knows exactly what were going through and is truly the best one to go to with problems! Its so comforting to me to know that the one who calmed the sea is willing to be the one I go to with problems.

God’s the only thing that is always there and can calm us and down and relax us. He is all knowing and all understanding, and it is so great to know that we have this kind of God to run to. I need to make sure that i go to him first, and that i always trust in his promises for me.

Verse 27 reminds us of God’s sovereignty! We did not choose him, but he chose us! Every time I praise God for this (which is almost every daY!!), I am just so thankful and humbled by it. What a blessing that Jesus reveals his father to us! People are so blind to the truth and I just pray that Jesus will open their eyes so that they can see his goodness, repent of their sins and put their trust in God. I know we all have people in our lives that we are constantly praying for, so let’s keep at it and remember that God is faithful. If we do our part, he will take care of the rest.

When I first read this verse, I was like “whattt???” and it confused me a lot. But after I looked at it for a while, I realized that it says that we don’t choose God, but He chose us! I am so thankful for this and it really humbles me. Before, I always thought that it was up to me if I wanted to serve God or not. I was waayyyyy off. Now, I feel so blessed that Jesus did this for us! The thing is, though, I have a MAJOR problem. I am so weak and vulnerable to temptation and I can’t shake it sometimes. I don’t know what it is, but I think I am in need of motivation. I pray that God will give me strength and the will to deny myself and what I want and I can begin to live my life FULL OUT FOR CHRIST! It would mean soo much to me if you guys could pray for me. ♥

I really like these verses, especially verse twenty eight. These verses help remind that the only place we can truly find rest and happiness is in the Lord, nothing of this world can compare to how the Lord can make me feel, i just need to remember that, and fully rely on him, for that is the only way I can truly be at rest.

Everyone of the world–constantly indulging in sin, doing whatever they want whenever they want to–may seem to be having an easy, fun, good time here, but in reality they are restless. Even if they did whatever for their whole lives, at the end of it all they would not find any lasting satisfaction or hapiness. Their souls would be anything but at rest, because the only true inner peace amidst all that goes on in this life is found in being united with the Maker of everything. Only in Jesus will anyone find rest for the soul.
If I’m not finding an inner, constant peace in Him, then I will be always swayed back and forth by everything that comes my way. Lord, please help me to rest my soul in the firm, solid, unmoving Rock that You are.

I love these verses. I am weary and burdened with my sin, and I can come to Christ and he will give me rest. This always reminds me of Pilgrim’s Progress when Christian lays his burden down at the foot of the cross. But, once my sin is taken care of, I’m not just free. I still have to wear the yoke of Christ. Pastor Mike said last week that we are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness, there is no “freedom” option. But the yoke that Christ gives me is light. It’s not always easy but Christ helps me and he never sends a trial my way without giving me the grace to endure through. That is true hope.

AMEN! these verses are God saying I know you have issues and problems and burdens that you cant handle all by yourself but if you let me I will take that burden and make it lighter for you. God will rest us and refuel us to do his work and this puts a big relief on christians because we always have struggles but we have that reassurance that God will be there beacking us up 100%

This verse hints to us the greatness of Heaven. Jesus says that the least in Heaven will be greater than John the baptist who he said is the greatest man ever to be born. This verse tells me to store up treasure in Heaven because t will be much better than earth.

I truley hope that I am not the one to fall away from a christain. I have so much to learn and so much to teach people that I know and people that I dont know. I know I will be persecuted and I will stand tall to the ones who do not believe or test my faith. Hopefully I do have a long and good life and eachday is full of the gospel. Again I ask that you do help me when I do fall away. Thanksgiving is near and I hope all of you will be safe and have fun.

Not only does God comfort us in times of need, this verse is specifically talking about salvation. By saving me, Christ removed the burden of my sin. He takes away the weariness that comes from trying to earn salvation. And someday, the rest will be perfect when I am in heaven with him.

Thank you God! I know I can’t do anything on my own but through Christ who strengthens me and it comforts me to know that I will find rest in Him. Only then is my soul at peace. It’s so great to know that he cares for me and that I should try to be gentle and humble in heart and more Christlike in my character.

I have never really thought about this verse before. But it is so true! The secular, evolutionary scientists think they know it all, but in reality they do not even know than a Christian child because we know God, as Savior and Creator. Wisdom of this world is not even close to God’s standard of wisdom and that is why we need to trust God WAY more than man.

This is why we need to repent! There is no way to escape the Lord’s wrath except in the Lord! Imagine his wrath to be a hurricane, then being a Christian is like being in the eye of this hurricane-the only refuge from the storm.

I am so grateful to God for my salvation! We are hopeless without Christ and it is in vain that people try to save themselves. All my efforts are filthy before our holy God (Isaiah 64:6). Tonight I’m thanking God for saving me from my empty righteousness and giving me new life in him!

The Lord forgives us for our burdens, and He strengthens us when we are weary. We know that we can come to Him and He will accept us as we are. The Lord is always there for us, even in the worst of times.

Great Scripture!
This sort of reminds me of a little series we all know as star wars. If any of you can recall correctly. In the very beginning when Luke Sky walker wants to find his uncle ben he goes into the desert and finds out that Ben is actually Obi-wan. The pharisees went to find John in the desert and they got a surprise as well. Now, I’m not saying that we should all grab our light-sabers and go save the universe. What I am saying is that Star Wars is a minor comparison to this section of the Bible. In the sense that appearance isn’t everything.

These verses are such a comfort to me!
I am especially thankful for God being there for me, being with me, in times when I feel too weak to carry a yoke that is too burdensome. (is that a word?) He assuages all my fears; whenever I get in over my head or stressed out, He is always there for to reassure me that He has a plan and that I need to rely on trusting Him no matter what…and to live with no regrets because He is constantly teaching me lessons in life. Any big task for me is a small matter to God–what is a heavy burden for me is a light burden for Him.

I always thought it was amazing how John the Baptist was prophesied to prepare the way for God so many years in advance of when he came. the fact that God plans all of this stuff so perfectly and never had to make any changes in what he said would happen is very comforting to me, because I know that he has a perfect plan for my life.

God has all that we need! The pleasure that I find in God when I’m seeking first his kingdom is makes me much more joyful than when I “enjoy” worldly pleasures, which is sin. I need to focus on finding pleasure in God above all things and craving His Word.

16″To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

Jesus is saying here that when I do something to serve someone of be kind to them, I should not just be doing it to get something in return. I should expect nothing, and just be serving because I am a slave of Christ. I should not only do unto others what I would have them do unto me, but I should do unto others the best I possibly can, without expecting them to be kind to me in return at all! Now that would turns some heads. I can only imagine how much people would notice that there is something different about me if that was my mentality ALL of the time. Sure, it’s easy to do that some of the time, but I need to work on being a slave for Christ and serving others without expecting anything in return in EVERYTHING, all of the time. I pray that I can please the LORD in everything I do.

I got caught up in the exchange between John the Baptist and Jesus here. Earlier in his ministry, John calls Jesus the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:9) and the “Son of God” (John 1:34). He describes Jesus as the bridegroom and himself as the friend of the bridegroom. But now he sends his followers to ask Jesus if he is “the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” I’m not sure why he asks that now. Maybe he didn’t know what Jesus was doing and wanted an update from prison?
Jesus responds by letting his miracles be his witness (John 5:36). Elsewhere, he says, “If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true.” And John would obviously know the OT prophecies about blind and deaf being healed. I imagine that when he was about to be beheaded he was thinking about what Jesus said about, “the dead are raised up…” (v.5).
John is a great example of someone who had followers, but did not view Christ, who also had followers as someone to compete against. He understood his role as the forerunner preparing the way of Christ and now that Christ was here his role was to decrease.

there are so many times that i feel weary and stressed out because of temptations and the stresses of life. this verse and psalms 73 are sooo powerful to me and give me a sense of overwhelming comfort and peace. it helps me get through rough times where it seems i am constintaly being tempted.

This is a scary verse. Because these people have seen the truth and not listened they will be judged much more harshly. I really do not want to fall away because that will be me!

I really feel bad for those cities who saw miracles performed and didn’t repent!!but there are so many people todday that hear the gospel and still don’t repent it’s sad but I want to do whatever I can to help get those people saved

I remember this verse in a sermon. The evidence of God’s commands for us and existance are so obvious. This leaves us with a responsibility whether we like or not. If we ignore them then God will curse us, therefore we must make every effort to serve Him, something i need to work on.

Willfully suppressing the truth is a most heinous crime in the kingdom of God. If you ever get the chance to go to Israel, go visit the bustling cities of Korazin and Bethsaida. oh wait, Jesus cursed those cities in verse 21 and we know that God’s word is 100% correct. Thats what so interesting about visiting the ruins of Korazin and Bethsaida, located so close to the beautiful Lake Galilee yet completly deserted. Why would such a city cease to exist. Simply because Jesus Christ the Lord of the Universe cursed it. The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

this verse really gives me strength and hope right now!!! When we as Christians are having a hard time or are tired or need strength all we need to do is go to God for it and he will give us rest and a place to find shelter!!!!!

Jesus had been going around from city to city, speaking to large crowds of people and performing miracles. This verse says that Jesus was denouncing the cities in which he had performed these miracles, yet the people stayed in their sins instead of repenting. He was calling woe down upon all of these people. They were sinful, had seen the light through Jesus Christ, and yet still chose to not repent. The people of these cities were stubborn and hardhearted. After seeing His power through His miracles and listening to what He spoke, the people chose to be ignorant and continue with their lives. For me, when I think about the greatness and holiness of God, and I see my sins, I need to repent of them as soon as I can. I need to not let the sin stay to dwell in my life, for then it will fester up and boil inside. As I’m not perfect, I will mess up. I can’t expect perfection, for I am less than perfect. However, I need to be giving my 100% effort in striving for perfection. Every time that I see my sin, the wrong that I have done, I need to repent of it. I need to get sin out of my life as soon as possible, not allowing the devil to gain a foothold in my life. Though the cities where Jesus performed miracles were unrepentant, I need to fall facedown every time I sin, repenting of it right away instead of just dwelling on the guilt!

It is amazing to me that people could see Jesus’ miracles and not repent. And yet, it should be just as amazing to us that people can read about Jesus in the Bible or hear about him in a sermon and not repent. In Luke 16:19-31 Jesus makes it clear that his Word is more powerful than someone rising from the dead!
When I read about these cities I think of Christian schools or places like True North where people have heard the Word of God but still live in their sins. I think about Jesus denouncing these cities and saying “Woe” to them and my heart goes out for those who know the truth but deliberately keep on sinning. They will face the judgment of Jesus! I pray that even more people at True North will repent to avoid this destruction and find real life!

I love this so much! Jesus is my refuge, the place I go in times of trouble (and times of good!). This brings to mind a quote of Abraham Lincoln’s “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.” I think its really accurate– Christ is always present and caring, especially when we are going through the worst things of our life.

Christianity is the only faith that people find absolute satisfaction and rest in. So many religions promise that people will find themselves through things such as meditation or something, but the only way we have any worth or purpose is in Jesus Christ!

God has a certain passage way for me that i must follow. The Lord is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path! He guides the way for me and if i do not follow Him and His ways down that path, then i will be lost and stray away! Verse 29 encourages me to try my very best to act in a way that Jesus would. I must learn from Him because he is all-knowing and knows me better than ANYONE and knows what is truly best for me. The Lord is gentle and humble in heart and I will always find rest and comfort in Him! As Jesus Christ was as a human, is exactly how i want and desire to be! He never sinned and never fell into temptation. He was holy and perfect and that is what I strive to be. I will never be perfect and holy like jesus was/is but what matters is if i tried my very best and strived to live a life like Him! (:
27″All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
This verse is just awesome, and gives me a better idea of what the relationship between The Father the Son, and Me is.

The Lord came to earth and lived life as a man, he knows each and every one of our problems, and understands it, he lived it! The Lord gives us a promise here of rest. When we trust in him to do his will, and that he has a plan for our lives, i find that i get peace from that. It is so awesome to know that i have a relationship with the Lord of the universe, and he cares about me!! I am so thankful for that, i do not deserve anything he has given me.

What a blessing it is to have a God who comforts, a God who cares. He is always there when we need Him; he will never leave us or forsake us.

Yokes are used to keep the oxen together and guide them wherever the master wants. If we choose to take the yoke of God, he will carry our burdens for us and we will be on the straight path to heaven!!!!!

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Christ came to heal us from the wounds of sin that are filled with guilt and pain. He promises rest from the burdens of our sin when we put our trust in Him and repent of all of our sins. If we labor in Christ fulfilling the will of the Father we will surely find rest in Him.
Isaiah 50:4 4 The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.
Christ has freed us from the bondage of sin and will one day bring us to our final resting place in Heaven. Thank you Jesus for delivering me from the chains of sin that entangled me.
