Matthew 10

The Twelve Apostles

10:1 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold nor silver nor copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, nor two tunics nor sandals nor a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

Persecution Will Come

16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

Have No Fear

26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Not Peace, but a Sword

34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Rewards

40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” (ESV)

We need to make sure that we don’t make anyone an idol but putting them ahead of Jesus in our hearts. I know that after this weekend I want to love Jesus more! My relationship with him is more important than anything else in this world!

Our focus should not be on worldly desires, but rather on God, who can damn you to destruction for eternity. We should be living for him in all that we do (v.38), and our love for him should trump all else (v. 37), anything less than this is insulting to our God, for he is THE ONE THAT GAVE YOU LIFE. He does this and he expects you to put him above all else because of it.
But hey, it’s not all bad news!–think of the wonders that are to come!

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This verse is super encouraging! We will be persecuted and tried day in and out, but we need to persevere these trials for the Lord! Fear of man shouldn’t in any way take the place of fear of the Lord. The people on this earth may seem mean and totally against God, but the fact that the Lord has the power to send people to hell should be a huge reason to proclaim His name to as many people as we can! We have it easy in America unlike other places in the world that people are actually getting the worst thing man can do to us – death. Yet sometimes we find it hard to tell our friend in the seat next to us at school that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ! Pray for boldness for all and that we will make the most out of every opportunity that we have here on this earth because the doors that we get won’t be open long!!!

I am a light in this world of darkness, and the rapidly changing culture of drugs sex and alcohol of my generation can not affect me. Jesus gave me the power and authority over the devil and I will abide by his words. I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me, and through the name of Jesus I have been made free

Mat 10:39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

It is God’s life – do we choose to live it for Him or ourselves? Giving time, talent and treasure to God (it’s rightful owner) frees us from enslavement to this world and puts us in the humble position and God will then use us. Lord, Please come soon!

  6. Stacy Perkins (ALSO the Older Twin...By 5 Minutes)! says:

    THIS IS A WAR!

This is Jesus, the General, giving His troops some instruction before they step on to the battle zone. I just keep PICTURING what was running through their heads while Jesus was telling all this to Him. And what would I have been like, if I’d been one of the Apostles? Would I have my fountain pen and papyrus in hand, frivolously taking notes? Ahh, it’s almost comical to consider! But then Jesus zaps them with a reminder that I must heed, as well, with the Holy Spirit truly inside of me:

19 “…do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

Jesus sent them to the lost sheep of Israel–not yet the Gentiles’ turn to hear the Gospel. It rings true for me, regarding the lost sheep of the church today. God has put it on my heart to share the true Jesus and the true Gospel with self-declaring Christians, whose lives bear bad fruit and major evidence of love triangles. A couple weeks ago, my older brother said to me I need to save my Jesus for someone who needs to hear it, like the cannibals (he’s weird, I know–why he went to “cannibals,” I have NO idea…he’s a weird bird). He says this, in the same breath as proclaiming with his mouth that he is Christian. Last night, a former colleague who, over time, has become a dear friend, and who, too, claims Christianity, told me about how she’s letting her son’s girlfriend live with him under HER roof. I shared with her how that is in direct conflict with Christ and what He calls us to, and a HORRIBLE witness for the girlfriend, who is NOT even a self-declaring Christian. She said, “Stacy, so help me, if you become one of those legalistics…well, you’re gonna lose out on so much in life,” or something to that effect. I said, “So would you say that living by what Jesus Christ commands of us is legalistic?” She said no. She said, “It’s true. There’s nothing I can say.” I told her that being a true follower DOES mean you have to walk away from so much. We canNOT have it both ways. Jesus said to shake even the DUST off of our feet. It’s a TOUGH call to say yes to…until you taste of the blessings of being obedient to Him…still hard sometimes, but that is why we MUST be on guard, poised and ready. So being on SOTD and saturating our hearts with God’s Word is a critical part of our call to battle.

    This is a serious war.

  7. Steffen Eriksen says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

It seems that the majority of the world today cares nothing about what Jesus is saying here. He is saying that no one should be afraid of any earthly power. Instead, everyone should fear the LORD. The things here on earth may have the power to harm a physical body, even to the point of killing it, but nothing of this earth can kill the soul. However, God is omnipotent (all-powerful). He has all power to both kill the body and to destroy the soul be sending it to hell for all of eternity. God is almighty, and the things of this world can’t even boast a comparison. The people of this world are so foolish! They care so much about this life, worrying over all of their material wealth and possessions, afraid of losing their worldly stuff. How stupid! None of it will last! And they fear others who can harm them physically. How stupid yet again! This physical body means nothing, for everyone will die in their physical body. However, some will be brought to life spiritually, spending eternity in heaven in the presence of the LORD, and others will never get saved, never coming out of their spiritual depravity, and will spend eternity in torment in hell. I need to be a radical theophobe! I need to fear God and his power to both destroy this body and send me to hell. I need to not fear the things of this world, for they are in vain!

  8. Jenna Perry says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

I like this verse but it is pretty intimidating! No one should be afraid of anyone on earth especially when we look at the fact God is the only one who can determine one’s death. If you are killed on earth, God already planned it in advance. We should be fearing that if we aren’t faithful Christian, the wrath we will receive when the day of judgment comes. Everyday we should be waking up and being thankful for our lives on earth not fearing what they day will bring! FEAR GOD:)

  9. Max says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Sound’s like “Don’t stop standing”, doesn’t it? People are going to hate us because of what we believe and stand for. We may not be persecuted as badly as those living in other countries, but it will sure be there none the less. He who stands firm in the end will be saved. I don’t want me or any of my fellow Christians falling away, i pray that we all keep standing!

  10. Kendal Luttinen says:

32 Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

When Jesus puts it that way, it doesn’t make standing up for the truth so hard. I would much rather have God’s favor than man’s. There is only so much that man can do, but God is forever and can do all things. Thank you Lord for even giving us a chance!

  11. Collin S says:

27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.

    Great Scripture!
I like this verse because it really gets me fired up to actually tell other people about Christ! Personally I know that I need to be shining brighter as a Christian. I definitely need to work on this aspect of the life God gave me. I really need to shout from the rooftops, e.i. spread the Word of GOD more than humanly possible, and quicker than humanly possible for the greatest sake. JESUS CHRIST!

  12. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 28,”Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

I like this verse because it talks about fearing the LORD. When we talk about fearing the LORD we aren’t talking about having a deep reverent respect for the LORD we are supposed to have that but when HE tells us to fear the LORD HE is telling us to full on scared to death of HIM. When I think of the LORD I usually think of how powerful HE is and of what HE has done for me. Both of these things motivate me because when I think of the power HE has it scares me and I don’t want to sin because I fear the punishment of having to talk with the one who gave HIS life for mine and lived the life I couldn’t.

  13. 42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

As Christians we are promised an eternal inheritance, a great heavenly reward for how we live on this earth; this doesn’t negate the fact that we are saved by grace alone and we don’t earn a standing so to speak with the Lord, BUT we are commanded to live holy lives and the promise of that holy living is a reward in heaven. Keeping this in mind, that we will be rewarded, gives us an extra motivation to pursue righteousness and say no to sin!

  14. Beth Lauder says:

14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.15I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

What a rich passage of Scripture full of so many amazing Truths! Wow, I am going to read it over a few more times today to be sure that I am really ingesting God’s Word. Verses 14-15 really stood out to me. They point out the fact that increased understanding of God’s revelation means increased responsibility on Judgement Day. The towns of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Old Testament were incredibly wicked, that is for sure. They were full of wickedness and sexual immorality and God, in one moment, wiped them off the face of the earth by sending sulfur and fire from heaven. Everyone who was in those cities was killed instantly. Matthew 10:15 tells us that the fate of those in Sodom and Gomorrah will be better than what happens to people to hear the good news of the gospel and reject it. Wow, that is intense! First of all we must be sure that we have responded rightly to the gospel with repentance and faith. Secondly, we must be sure to pray diligently for all the people who we share the gospel with and reject it. Since they have actually heard the good news and had the option to repent, but they did not, their punishment on Judgement Day will be severe. Please join me in praying for all the people in our lives who have rejected the gospel. I know I do not want my dad, father-in-law, grandma and many of my friends to spend eternity in hell for their failure to turn from their sin and place their trust in Christ.

Knowing that if i acknowledge Christ then he will acknowledge me!!!!

  16. Pastor Ben says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Fear of the Lord creates fearlessness for everything else. This is such a great reminder that I should never be afraid or intimidated by others if I fear the Lord. That is a challenging thought, as well.

Jeremy, I loved that you said…”We’ve got a whole ETERNITY ahead of us! You can’t tell me this isn’t worth dying for!” It reminded me of what Jim Eliot (a missionary who was killed by the people he was trying to reach) said: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

  17. Alyssa K says:

39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

40″He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.

Verse 39 means to me that if I get comfortable in a life in this world, I am “finding” my life–which means I will lose it. Yet if I risk the things I have in my life for Christ, I will find life–the kind of life that matters. Verse 40 reminds me that as a Christian, I am a representative for Christ and should always strive to be known as a disciple for Him. That way if someone accepts me and my beliefs, they accept Christ in a way, just as when a person accepts Jesus into their heart, they accept God the Father. I need to make sure I am representing Christ and the one who sent him because I am a child of God.

  18. payton :D says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

    Jeremy, awesome comment!
I should NEVER be afraid of others here on earth, but only be afraid of the one and only one who could sned me to hell. He is soverign over all and I need to fear Him! Earth is temporary and heavfen and hell is eternity! I am going to fear God and forget what man says about me! :]

***GLory be to God in the highest!!!***

  19. AL∑C™ 2010 says:

33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

What a crazy truth! disowning or rejecting Jesus = disownment or rejection of you. gnarly decisions have gnarly consequences.

  20. Brandi says:

So many people deny God but here are 12 disciples who talk about God all day long, this makes me want to tell more people about God and to not be afraid of what they think :)

  21. bree says:

God is so wothy and holy. i love him so much and i am glad to be a follower of christ.

  22. Hunter 2010 says:

    Nice quote Ben!

42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

This verse gets me excited for Heaven! I am looking forward to the day when I will be rewarded for the things I have done for other Christians and when I will be able to worship God with them. This also makes me want to encouarge and serve my brothers and sisters more so that they will be able to grow in their faith and glorify God!

  23. Brooke Miller says:

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This verse has always been helpful and encouraging to me. I really do enjoy evangelizing and talking to others, but there are times where I find myself nervous or afraid, which shows I am not trusting in God and that I fear man over the Lord! I do not want that to be the reason because I much rather fear god, the mighty and powerful one who can destroy both my soul and body in hell, then man who cannot. The Lord is perfect and can do anything. He has control and determines judgement! I am just i prayer that I will be more bold and fearless when it comes to talking to others about Christ! I know and I have the truth, but it needs to be spread, which means that I need to take every opportunity and search for the open doors!

  24. Victoria says:

23When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

i like these two verses because the first one is telling me that when I, as a Christian, am spreading His news and am persecuted in one place, need not to give up and go to another place, maybe to be persecuted again. Peeople can kill the body but not the soul. I shouldnt be afraid of being persecuted because i know that whatever happens my sould will be with Jesus Christ forever. I like the second verse because i just think that is really cool how the Lord knows absolutely EVERYTHING about everyone and everything he made. One of the many questions i am going to ask God when i am in heaven is how many hairs i have on my head :)

  25. ELLA says:

I wasn’t there this weekend, but heard the sermon online. Amazing job Pastor Bobby!!!

24″A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.

This is like obeying authority or submiting to authority. Teachers, parents, all other adults are our masters. God says to honor father and mother and obey authority. And when you have a leader dont try to be above them because God put that person in that position to begin with. If the leader though is saying to do bad, then do it. God says to obey, even though it is wrong listen to God and in the end everything turns out right. God works the good in ALL things. I am not saying hey go out and do bad, noooo, I would do what my authoritive people told me to do and if bad try to pray to God and see for sure. All I know is that God turns the bad to good things, He works for the good in all things, He will turn that life around. God is good all the time and all the time He is good, AWESOME.

  26. Kelsey says:

    37 ″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

This verse helps remind me daily that in my life, God needs to be number one. This verse helps motivate me. Idolatry is one of the things that I struggle with. I have to work very hard to put God first at all times in my life, and also to give my life up to him fully, and trusting him. I hate not being in control of what is going on, and not knowing what is going to happen, so it is really hard for me to try to not control everything the way I want. I need to let God take the reins and run my life. And he needs to be first in it. This verse stays on my mirror to daily remind me of that.

  27. Alicia Karlsson says:

So many rich truths through out this passage.

Psalm 119:103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Verse 20 gives me so much encouragement when I am telling people about Christ or sharing the truths of the scriptures with others. The excuse is made, but I won’t know what to say or I am nervous that I won’t say the right thing. Just as we are worried about this so were the disciples. It is not easy to be bold and proclaim the gospel, but the amazing thing is that the Holy Spirit is speaking through us. The disciples were facing prison or possibly death, all we face today is rejection. How much bolder should we be in proclaiming the truth for we know it is not in our own strength or wisdom that we preach the gospel but it is the power of the Spirit with in us. As I consider those who need to hear the truth may I go out boldly and have confidence in the Spirit who is speaking through me.

  28. Joy Talcott says:

34″Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

This is so counter cultural to what people think about Jesus. While His coming and His death did create a way of redemption and thus for man to be at peace with God, Jesus himself is saying that he is bringing the sword. The Gospel message is divisive and will turn even households against each other. But just as it goes on to say the only thing we are to fear is the Lord who can destroy both the body and soul and we have to be willing to leave our families and everything else in our lives to follow Christ.

  29. Jasmine 2010 says:

19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,

I really like this verse. Again the topic of worrying comes up. I don’t need to worry about what to say or how to say it but I know that God will provide the words He wants me to say and use His words and not my own. Like one time one evangelism night this girl said that believing in God and being a good person was enough to get into heaven. At that time, I opened my mouth and immediately Ephesians 2:8(grace we have been saved) andJ ames 2:19 (even the demons believe in God) came out. I was so stunned because I didn’t even memorize that but God gave me those verses to say. :)

  30. taylor says:

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
this is such an amazing verse! when we share the gospel to people the only thing that they can do to us is kill our body, and even then it is good for us because we are going to heaven! but if we hold back and don’t share the gospel with people then we need t fear the one who could send our souls to hell for eternity! this verse makes me realize that when i am not sharing the gospel with everyone i see i am fearing persecution from man which probably isn’t even death, most likely its being made fun of. and when i don’t share the gospel with people i am not fearing God. he is the one that can send me to hell for eternity. i need to be more bold and evangelize a lot more.
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
these verses are awesome because it makes me want to proclaim the name of God to everyone because if i acknowledge Him before man, he will acknowledge me before God! but if i keep quiet and don’t tell people about the Lord, and i disown the Lord, then he will disown me. this makes me want to evangelize to everyone and be bold so that the Lord will acknowledge me before God.
38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
these verse are amazing also. if i don’t leave all my worldly possessions behind and take my cross and follow Him, i am not worthy of Him. God needs to be 1st in my life with nothing else competing. i need to be focussed on him. the only important thing in my life should be God. i need to leave everything i have behind and follow him. there can’t be something in my life just as or more important than God. i need to lose my life for God’s sake so that i can have eternal life in heaven!

  31. Dan Lauder says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

It all comes down to this ? Who are you going to fear? Man or God. Based off of this verse it makes no sense for me to fear man more than God. God can do far worse things to me than man ever could, he has the power to kill my soul. This is the persepective I want to live with everyday. If I do, it will profoundly impact how I act. In everything I do I want to aim to please God, not man. I need to remind myself of this verse constantly through each day and each week.

  32. Cameron says:

17″Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues.

here Jesus tells His disciples that they WILL face persecution, and that they will be tortured for His sake. in fact, all of the disciples (not including Judas) were persecuted for their faith, and many were martyred. john was exiled to Patmos for preaching the gospel. today we are fortunate and blessed not be be under heavy persecution like the disciples back then. but people will still mock us and persecute us emotionally and intellectually because of Christ.

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

while we are persecuted, we should fear God and not men. God can destroy both body and soul, men only the body. this should offer us comfort. one of my favorite verses in the Bible is Romans 8:31. If God is for us, who can be against us? this verse really comforts me because i know that the Creator of the universe will justly punish anyone who offends Him or His children. He will punish them for their evil deeds. i pray that these verses help me be bold for Jesus Christ all the time, especially on campus. i need to be unashamedly proclaiming the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. i know that He is protecting me and watching over me. lets be bold for Jesus Christ! Maranatha!!!

  33. Annie is spending the night with Beth at Biola says:

6 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
This is a scary verse to think about, because we really are being thrown in the middle of a chaotic world where most people want nothing to do with what we have to say about the Gospel. I need to be on my guard against the wolves of this world and always have “sheep buddies” who support one another and stand together in the name of Christ.

  34. Jacob U. says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is one of the verses that stuck out to me in this chapter. this is because we should be bold in our walk with Christ and not worry about what others think of us. We should always be out there shining andbeing and example and standing up for Christ, and we should not worry about what the world thinks, because all they can do is destroy the body

32Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.

This is of the other verses that stuck out to me because we are being told to go out and EVANGELIZE. Then the next few verses really tell us that we need to put Christ 1st in our lives, and nothing else in front of Him.

  35. Kyle Johnson says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Lately, I’ve been tired of saying things how I apply a verse or seeing other people saying how they love the verse and if they don’t live it out. I make a lot of mistakes. I sin. I don’t consider myself to be one of most righteous people at church to be honest. Let’s be real True North, instead of this fakeness.

I struggle with this. Pride is one of my biggest problems in life. I should tell people the gospel, but I don’t want to lose friendships or reputation. I specifically remember on the Missions Trip this summer, I was down @ SC Pier. It’s my turn to evangelize & I see these three guys. These guys were some of the most intiminating people I ever saw, I wouldn’t be suprised if they had a gun on them. So I didn’t evangelize to them. This verse is a direct rebuke to me. the Bible says that I’m a coward. I imagine, if I didn’t know Christ and wasn’t told the Gospel when someone was givin the chance and they wimped out, how bad would I feel on judgment day. If those guys don’t know that when they die, I’m more deserving of hell then they are.

  36. Murphy Danahy says:

17″Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues.
18On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.

The disciples endured serious hardship and pain for the gospel, and they suffered greatly for the name of JESUS. Are we willing, ready, and able to suffer in the same ways? We have to be strong in the LORD so that when persecution does come, we can be strong.

  37. Spencer Camp says:

This is such great advice for evangelism:

16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

Jesus says that we should not be surprised when persecution comes because of His name because we are like little sheep among ferocious wolves. Everyone who wants to be effective for Christ will be persecuted. So don’t be afraid.

Instead we should communicate with non-Christians in an intelligent and persuasive way, like snakes and doves. This is soo helpful! Sharing the Gospel should not be a debate or an argument, it should be an attempt to win another over to Christ, in love.

    Shrewd (wise) as a Snake:

The snake is a reptile known to be able to strike with effective power. They coil and strike with punchy springs that paralyze an opponent. In the same way we should be wise with our words, using them with cunning, so that the person we’re speaking to may never doubt the truth. We should speak not so others will understand us, but in such a way that it is impossible for them to misunderstand us.

    Innocent as Doves:

In all ways I believe the most important quality would be to remain innocent. We should remain blameless, calm, and controlled. If anything we should act so innocent that to an outsider looking in it should be seen as just a friendly conversation (when in fact it is nothing of that sort).

I need to put this in to practice when I share the Gospel with my friends and family over Thanksgiving break!

  38. Sarah G.! says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Once again, we know that God’s promises still stand true!! People who do not know Christ do hate us because of Him, but that gives us no excuse to stop telling others about the gospel!! Like Romans 1:16 says, I am unashamed!! I was persecuted last week for being one of those kids who evangelizes on the weekends, and this person literally said “i hate your kind”. This encouraged me to keep evangelizing no matter what people may say or think about me!! :D

  39. KATIE KNUDSEN says:

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

i like this one alot because it reminds me of the serman we just heard. “new moon”. Its so true too anyone who loves something more than God is not worthy of God. I think its alot harder today in the society we live in today, but its no excuse to put something before the creater of the universe!!!

  40. Ver'leea Hardaway says:

28″Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

I think this is a really good verse because people are more worried about what others think, rather then God what thinks. And this verse shows you how we need to be way more concerned about what God thinks rahter then peoples opinions.

  41. sean says:

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.

30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

32″Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.

Maranatha!!! we need to be excited to be disciples. In our troubles we need to acknowledge him and declare him as Lord, no matter how many people it is infront of.

  42. ~ Ariana Mishreki ~ says:

    Hello . . .

    I read . . .

    Matthew 10 . . .

“28. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Murderers. Wicked people out in the world with cruel desires to take someones life. This verse is telling me, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THOSE PEOPLE. Don’t walk around, scared and frightened of the men and women who might put a bullet through your earthly body. Your earthly body, is completely meaningless and will completely parish and disolve once we leave earth. Instead, I need to be frightened of the God who can take my life.

“37. Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;”

“38. and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”

“39. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Bottom line: One who wants to save his life hear on earth, will loose it. One who wants to live life in heaven and live their life here on earth for God, they’ll keep it. I need to live my life for God so He can be pleased with me. I know that is the most imortant thing to do, and I know by living for Him and caring less about my life, He’ll be pleased.

  43. Michelle is so glad to be back on SOTD:))) says:

1He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

I kind of glued these two verses together in my mind…in verse one, Jesus gave His disciples the authority to do something for Him, something of the Lord. In girls workshop on saturday, we talked about Mary and her reaction towards being used by God. Her reaction towards bearing a son was incredible- she praised God to the extreme- something i need to work on. But the question here is, (for me) am i living a life that shows my obedience towards the Lord? Would i be chosen to do such a task as to bear Gods son or drive out demons and heal the sick, ,etc? I have to be consistantly in Gods word, so that i will know what is right and how to live correctly in this world. I tied verse 1 to verse 22 because it takes guts to do what is right. Well, not so much ‘guts’, but there are times when it can be hard to say no to a friend or not go through with something your peers want to do. That is why it is so urgent for me, and other Chrisitans, to surround ourselves with Christian friends. We can stand together and stand firm in our beliefs, because Hey!GOD IS WORTH IT! I know that my ultimate goal and want in life is to finish the race strong, and fully faithful to God. I need to make sure that i am living a life that is pleasing to the Lord. I think that it would be so cool to be chosen by God, an honor, to do something big like that for Him. But as for right now, Im gonna proclaim the gospel and spread it, like we are called to do

    MARANATHA!!

  44. Allen McAnlis says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Being a Christian is not a walk in the park. Infact, temptations and trials will grow harder as you walk with God. We need to stay firm in God’s word and surround ourselves with fellow believers. Do not say that you cannot fight temptation because you are only human. With God’s help anything is possible. Make sure you are focused in God’s word, that will help you deal with the sinful nature of the world.

  45. Wesley Wong says:

the kingdom of heaven is near(7)
therefore we have to live our lives like the kingdom of heaven is near
how? by putting Jesus number one priority in my life(37)
how do i do this? (38)
i am going to be persecuted for this (17)
but I should keep this in mind (26)

Jesus is sending out his twelve disciples to give a message to the lost sheep of Israel, “This kingdom of heaven is near.”
Now right now I’m thinking, “If the kingdom of heaven is near, I have to live like the kingdom of heaven is near.”

But how should I live my life?
Jesus answers this question in verse 37. He gives the point that if you love anything more than you love Him, you are not worthy of Him. I need to put Jesus as my first priority in my life.

Now how do I do this?
Jesus answers this question again in verse 38-9. He gives the point that I need to take my cross and follow Him. In other words, he wants me to lose my earthly life, so I can find my eternal life in heaven.

This is going to be no easy journey for me. Jesus promises persecution from the world for me. Just look at verse 17. Jesus is telling his disciples that , they might be flogged. In 2 Timothy 3:12. I get the idea of that too. I want to lose my life, so that I can find it because the kingdom of heaven is near. That means putting Jesus, the reason I have hope and life, number one in my life. Like I said, this is like walking down the narrow road; the path is difficult, but the reward is great. I should keep this verse 28, in mind to help me during difficult situations. What can man do to me?

    God Bless!!

  46. Angela says:

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

God is number one, we have to put him first, not even our parents or family can go before him. That is the main thing i struggled with before I was a Christian. We need to take up our crosses and follow him, through what ever when-ever. We need to be ready for him, Any-time Any-place and ready to do Any-thing.

  47. Lizzie McCoy says:

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

We should not fear the judgement of others. The only judgement that we need to fear as Christians. is that of God, He is the only one who decides if we go to Heaven or not.

  48. Emily Knudsen says:

22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

This verse stood out to me because i feel that being a christain im always being persecuted for standing for God. But it does not matter what people think because they are short-term and have givin you nothing but evil things, though God is forever and gives you beutiful things. So never stop standing for someone who is so mighty that everything that has ever been created will bow down to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

  49. Marissa Ramirez says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is one of my favorite verses of the bible. I how you should not be of the ones you can kill you. though to most of us that may sound veru bad, but it is not as bad as God sending you to hell for the rest of your life burning and screaming at the top of your lungs forever. Also let me remind you that forever is a long time. Just think of how long people were on earth 2,000 years ago. Some might be in hell and they have been suffering for a long time. Just think of them. Do you want to be the ones suffering? Or do you want ti be made perfect and in the presence of God? Things on earth are scary, but it is nothing compared to what God can do to your body and soul.

  50. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

I need to make sure that I do not idolize other things. I need to constantly check my heart to make sure that nothing has been placed in front of the Lord when it comes to my priorities. Even if it means giving up something it is so worth doing it for the almighty Lord.

  51. Summer Staeb says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

This verse is intense! But, I know that standing up for Jesus Christ will totally be worth it in the end! Maranatha!!

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

This is definitely a struggle for me, but I, especially after this weekends sermon, want to make sure Jesus Christ is my only #1. He needs to be far above anything else in my life and I pray that this would show to all the people I come in contact with! No love triangles or idols!

  52. Jasmine Douglas says:

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Awesome Chapter! So verse 28 totally stood out to me this evening. It reminds me that I am not to fear man, but fear God. We have no reason to be afraid of those that can only harm us physically. God is ultimately the one that we answer to and I’d rather live in obedience to him, who can destroy both body AND soul!! Then verse 7 says that the kingdom of heaven is near, so that makes me want to share the gospel even more! Our time is sooo limited guys, let’s live for God 100% NO MATTER WHAT!

  53. Zach V says:

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

This is awesome. Thinking about how God cares about me, a lowly sinner in a sea of billions of other lowly sinners, enough to save me, that is awesome. This encourages me to be more obedient to Him everyday such as obeying my parents better and being loving all the time.

  54. trevorhosford says:

16I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.

wow, these people are Jesus all star team that he is sending through out all of Isreal and he is calling them sheep among wolves. That would be a pretty scary thing to do, but what an honor it would be to one of the people Jesus sent that is what i want to do

c u all at small groups

  55. Luke Melrose!!!!!!!!!!! says:

14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.

Basically, all this verse is saying, is that when people write you off when you are trying to explain the gospel to them, get over it. We cant cry to ourselves when someone persecutes or ignores you. We need to “shake the dust off our feet” and move on. Not everyone is going to respond to you in a positive manner, but this is NOT a reason to stop spreading the word. We are like sheep among the wolves, and we need to expect to be persecuted.

  56. lauren taylor goudge(: says:

    heyy :)
40″He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.—Love this! This whole chapter is good stuff. This reminds me of the example that I should be showing towards Christians and nonChristians. My example should be showing God’s love and that love is making sure that people are putting God before anything else! I need to be living my life for the LORD everyday so that just by looking at me people will know that I am truly in love with the Lord and Him only! I am definitely going to be keeping His commands more and making sure that there is no competition between God and any earthly thing down here!
    MARANATHA!!!

    thankful for CBC!!!

  57. Tristan Jorden says:

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.

It is only through Jesus Christ that we are accepted by God. Our faith and love for Jesus, and the understanding of his sacrifice, is the only way we find favor in God’s eyes. Jesus intercedes for our transgressions and enables us to be seen as clean–that’s absolutely amazing!

  58. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

This chapter is so good. The thing that stuck out to me the most is GIVE. I must give every thing that I have to follow God. God needs to be number one in my life. I think this verse is cool it shows me that even the small gifs that I give that I will get a reward.

  59. I thot this passage was prettyintense. the way he said how if you love someone more than if u love god really got to me. i mean that is something that i really need to work on and really pray that i will be able to fix in the near future

  60. DustinA says:

    Amazing Chapter!!!
    Definatly one of my favorites!

14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Expect to be percecuted! I really like both of these verses alot! If someone were to not listen to or welcome your words of wisdom then the only way that that person should effect you is that they have just created a little dust on your shoes that you can shake right off, you dont have to worry about them anymore. I like how verse 28 shows us that their is no threat on earth worth dwelling over, rather, we should fear Satan who can destroy our soul. I pray that i can learn to rejoice when i am persecuted Lord and that i would not fear worldly things of the body but things that can destroy the soul.

    MaraNatha!!!

  61. Boyd Jorden says:

    9 Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts;
10 take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.

As a Christian, my number #1 concern needs to be doing God’s work; I don’t need to worry about earthly things because the Lord will take care of me and my family. Plus, my true reward lies in heaven! What encouraging promises Jesus offers in this chapter!

  62. Katie Melrose says:

39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
40″He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me

AMEN! I love these verses because it really expresses the heavenly reward for us by being persecuted or even losing out live for the sake of Jesus Christ. If we dwell and focus on our lives here on earth them we pretty much have lost it because we compromised a put the world (aka satan) before God (which is practically the worst thing that will happen!) I pray that i can always put God before anything in my life and not compromise which is soo hard but i know God will put his strength were my weaknesses are! This is what helps me get by everyday, the fact that the Lord will always be there with me and help me in every step! THANK YOU LORD FOR MY SALVATION! I JUST CAN’T SAY IT ENOUGH TIMES!

  63. Austin Payne 2010 says:

16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

Christ says that the World hated Him and they’re going to hate us. We are lonely sheep among a World of Wolves and they’re looking to take us down. But our Sheperd is Mightier than any pack of Wolves. Hard Core with a Soft Shell, with the Lord at our back, we cam overcome this World.

  64. Dr. Jones, previously the lone mustang says:

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Amen! I have a distinct fear for God and although I can’t wait to be with him in heaven, and if I wasn’t a Christian, I would be sooo afraid of the wrath of GOD. God is omnipotent and all powerful. There is nothing too extreme for him. I’m willing to take a bullet for God because that bullet may kill me physically, but it would be beneficial to me altogether because I would get to be with the LORD in heaven. I need to keep that selfless and fearful mindset so that I can put the LORD’s will first and foremost.

  65. Taylin Reinholtz says:

14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.
15I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

That is actually a very scary thing to hear about. I mean Jesus is basically saying that the punishment for a town that doesn’t welcome the disciples with an eagerness to hear what hey say, the punishment they will receieve is worse than what Sodom and Gomorrah faced. That is very very very scary and I feel sorry for the towns that are going to get this punishment. But then again that also makes me think of how people hear about Christ with a lot of hostility in their hearts.

19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

This actually brings comfort to me because God doesn’t just leave us to fend for ourselves. He gives us the answers. So when we have to answer someone for whatever reason when it has to do with God, he will give us the knowledge on how to talk to the people that are persecuting us or just plain trying to figure out what Christianity is all about. We do things with God’s help. It’s not the other way around.

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

After reading this, I got convicted. Talking to strangers about God doesn’t really scare me at all. They don’t know me and won’t really hurt my feelings because they don’t want to listen to what I have to say, so it’s all good when talking to them. It’s people, like my family, that I fear talking to about it. I don’t want them to think that I am judging them, but at the same time I want them to know about the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ and that they need to take that fact personally. My dad knows that Jesus is the only way to heaven and he deliberately choses not to follow him. That really scares me. And everytime I try to talk to him about it, he just blows me off or makes me feel stupid. So I give up for awhile. I don’t know how to say something to him to really get it through his thick skull that hell isn’t something to laugh about.

  66. Karsten Klein says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

If someone were to get mad at you for doing gods work and you stop doing gods work, then that is like saying that you are more afraid of that person than of god. It’s like if a friend asked you to do something that was wrong, hopefully you would say no and show that you are more afraid of god than your friend. Kind of like Matthew 10:37. “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me”. Nobody should be put infront of god. God should always be first no matter what. Just like pastor Bobby said, if you would sin for someone else, thats called idolatry.

  67. Alison says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

The opinions of the world DO NOT MATTER. The world values completely opposite things than what God values. The world values money, popularity, people who push the limits. God values faith, love, selflessness. If I bend in my beliefs to please the world then I am not worthy to be a child of God! I’m praying that God gives his children strength to please and serve him better!

  68. Natasha B :) says:

I like alot of verses in this chapter however this one stood out to me the most.

14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town

Basically this verse is telling me that when i share the gospel or talk about Jesus with others and they dont respond the way i would like, then i shouldn’t take it personally. God tells me in his word to shake the dust off my feet and move on to the next person and hopefully have a better result. So dont be down or discouraged when things dont work out as planned, however you just move on and pray that seed you planted will have an impact.

  69. Ben S says:

8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

    9Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts;

10take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.

We need to do good things, but also trust God to provide for us in all we do. We trust in him and do the things he tells us to do, and he will take it from there.

  70. Jimmy Kang says:

10take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.

THis verse tell me i dont have to worry about where I’l be getting what I need when serving him and he will provide if we are doing his work. I can really apply this to my life by putting 100% of my trust in GOd and having less worries for the future.

32″Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

Wow powerful verses! In Matthew 10 God tells about how rough it will be serving him and how we will be persecuted doing his work but if we dont acknowledge him as God even when our friends or people we might not know are putting him down how can He claim us as his children on the day of reckoning? I really need to apply this to my life in high school. When people ask put dwn God I have to stand up and make a point to let them know my beliefs and my pursuit to know God because why would I not want a relationship with the Lord Almighty who has endless power..

  71. Katie Slusher says:

37 ″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

“Jesus Christ is #1 and there is no second place.”
Sometimes we can justify certain relationships and say they aren’t as important as our relationship with the Lord, but upon closer examination, we treasure the other relationships just as much. While I am so thankful for the family and friends the Lord has blessed by with, I need to make sure they are not idols in my heart. I need to make sure my love for my Savior far surpasses my love for others. He is truly all that matters!

  72. Tpayne says:

32″Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.

33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

1 John 2:24-25 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the father. And that is what he promised us-even eternal life.

    2:23 No one who denies the Son has the Father;

As a Christian I need to take advantage of every opportunity to Represent!

  73. Allie Moorefield says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
40″He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.
AWESOME VERSES! Great chapter of Matthew and one of my favorites. Matthew 10:28 is one of my favorite verses in the bible! I struggle with fearing people and what they will think of me and this verse has helped A LOT with that! Any person who loves their father, mother, or earthly possessions more than God is NOT worth Him and his mercy! Also if i do not take up my God’s cross and follow Him is NOT worth of Him! But because i will lose my life for His sake, i will find life in Jesus! Finding life in Jesus Christ sounds sooooo much better than finding life on this sinful, crummy world! The greatest part is that whoever receives Jesus, receives the one that sent Jesus into this world, God! That is awesome news and gets me so pumped! God is good and i am going to make sure my life has NO love triangles and that i can be passionate and love the Lord!
Nice comment Luke, Austin, and Katie!!!!!!!!!

  74. Zachary Hoffman says:

10take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep

Have you ever heard it said that “the Lord takes care of His own”? This is true, provided one is actually a Christian doing the work of the Lord. Don’t take this to mean that you will have it easy, rather it will be hard, but He will give us strength to persevere through persecution

  75. 19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,

20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Wow, God’s power is incredible! Not only did God’s power enable the disciples to heal any disease but they could raise the dead!? I love how in these verses Jesus is addressing what their attitude should be about being questioned after being arrested—without worry! Totally trusting that the power of God working through them to do miracles will work in them, the Holy Spirit speaking through them. It is sad to see so many Christians acting timid and unsure of what to say representing Christ today in a free country when here Jesus is basically guaranteeing that his disciples would be arrested but comforting them with how God will be there, enabling them to speak for him. My prayer is that I will be bold even this week in speaking about God to anyone that I can to evangelize or encourage!

  76. Natalieeeeeeee says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

MM what a great verse for evangelism!!!! Its so easy to fear man more then God!! Really when you think about it its so lame for us to be more afraid of man then our all powerfull Heavenly Father who controls the universe!!!!!

  77. Brett *2010* says:

    37.) “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38.) and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Mmm, a couple of very important points right here… this reflects the sermon from this weekend about how God, and nothing else, should take NUMBER ONE priority in our lives. I pray that this would become a reality in my life, that there would be no idols or “competition” with God in my life.

  78. Brick-E says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This verse is a good verse for accountability. When we go out to talk to people at the spectrum or town center, are we afraid of what people think? I know I was scared when I first talked to someone at the spectrum, but when I finished I felt great! We need to remember to FEAR the one that has control over our eternity, not fear the men of this earth. The part of the verse that says to fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell, reminded me that no one’s opinion or throught can Hurt us. We have God on our side, the one who will judge the living and the dead!!!
    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  79. katie baxter says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is like one of my favorite verses ever! If we truly fear God instead of men then nothing should stop us from sharing the bible with everyone we know. The worst thing people can do to us is kill us, and even then we would be rewarded in heaven. But God can do so much more, and that is something that makes a lot more sense to be afraid of. I need to remember this everyday!

  80. Nicole Waymire says:

Okay so basically….this chapter was amazing!!! :)

16I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

As christians, we are being sent out among the world as foreigners and must take extreme caution and wisdom in every move we make. Like sheep among wolves you are in SUCH danger but, thankfully, we have our heavenly father as our shepard to help us and guide us.

19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

These are verses that I personally really need to cling to and run to. It says not to WORRY about what you are going to say to people on God’s behalf. Whether it be sharing the gospel, sticking up for Him, or just going through our daily lives being a witness and a light. HE will provide us with the perfect words those people need to hear. God has a plan in everything and NOTHING can ever change it.

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Following up those verses(19 & 20), this verse warns us that we WILL be hated. Not we might, or could be- we WILL. For most people, including me, this is something we don’t like to deal with. It’s hard enough having a couple people just “not like you” but if we are strong, God fearing christians, all non-believers WILL hate us!!! But, it also encourages us by stating that if we endure it til the very end, we will be saved. Obviously we can’t do that on our own so all the more reason to depend on God for everything. Every aspect of our life is dependent on Him!

30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

God loves us so so much. He knows all about us. He created us. He knows us better than we know ourselves. Those are crazy statements to try to understand and fathom. God is so amazing and omnisient!!! I don’t think about this nearly enough as I should. Praise the Lord for He is all knowing!

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

This passage was used in Pastor Bobby’s sermon this weekend. This world, and everything in it, should be considered garbage and worthless to us. All our minds should think about is God and heaven. If we have the marantha mindset we are definitely on the right track. In these 3 verses, Jesus sums it all up. NO ONE can be first in your heart except Him. If anything/anyone is in His place there is a major problem and you need to confront it and get rid of it! “Whoever find his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
    Marantha!!
Couldn’t choose one verse…I absolutely LOVED them all!!

  81. Nachoooooooo says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

This is a great verse becasue it includes a solemn truth yet an amazing hope. We will be hated for following Christ, just as Christ was hated, but if we perservere through this persecution, we will be saved.

  82. Shelby Sawyer says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

This totally stood out to me when I read this. We will be persecuted when we stand up for Christ. But I love how this verse says we will be saved in the end. The Lord is so worth it and he deserves all of my praise and glory.

  83. Crystal says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

We shouldn’t fear people here on earth. They can only destroy our bodies. We should be more afraid of God because he can destroy our bodies and souls. What God thinks of us is way more important than what people think. I need to work on fearing God more than people.

  84. jacksondahl says:

Wow, this is one seriously legiT chapter. God’s word is so awesome.

    9Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts;
10take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.
19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

These verses serve as some amazing encouragement for me as I go through life serving the LORD. Jesus tells his disciples to take practically nothing with them, because he knows that he will provide for them in everything, and get them through every struggle. He tells them not to worry even when they are arrested. That must have been a difficult thing to do, however I can have this same lack of of worry because I know that all I have to do is trust in God and he will get me through everything. It may not be easy, and I will go through struggles, but he WILL pull me through, and I can rejoice that He is pleased with how I have served him when I die and go to be with him. It says I don’t even need to worry about what do say, that God will speak the words through me! That is so awesome! I am so glad that I can keep trust in the LORD that will never be broken, never perish, and he will always be with me! Thinking about that is so encouraging- I know that no amount of persecution with be able to pull me away from the one I love.

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

I need to make sure that there is not even a hint of a Love triangle in my life. It is so easy to do other things and put God off.. but He needs to be all that matters. There is no room for anything/one else if my life is going to be 100% devoted to God, and I need to show that in how I act and through serving Him in everything. I need to lose my life for him- straight and simple. He IS worth it, and he deserves my everything.

    PRAISE THE LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!

  85. Brett Foreman says:

WOW i had a huge post and at the last second it was deleted?????!!!!!! haha so ill try and get the stuff i wrote about in this post…

22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

This reminds me of evangelism and how people may persecute you and stuff and have countering examples on how we are wrong about our facts, this will help us greatly in growing stronger in our FAITH for GOD because if we believe and drink Gods spiritual milk than we will become more knowledgeable and more able to speak in public about GOD, and maybe even save some lives!!!

    - These verses are great because they teach how we should stay calm and still when people persecute us, because it will be worth it in the end and we will be saved.

    - Also we shouldnt mind when people pay no attention to us or show no interest, instead we should go elsewhere and talk to other people and spread GODS WORD to them!!!

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

    - This verse says that we should only be afraid of GOD!! many times we are scared of other people or of teachers or anyone who can cross our mind as scary, but truly the only ONE we should be scared of is GOD…

-Because God is in control of us and can determine whether we go to hell or not and we should live our lives for him and only HIM, people on the other hand can only kill us physically but cannot kill our souls.. GOD is Numero Uno!!!!

  86. Jacob Antoun 2010 says:

16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

As Christians we do not belong in this world. We are aliens and strangers. We need to be wise in the way we act toward others, making the most of every opportunity. We need to be smart and acute like snakes, yet as innocent and above reproach as doves. I love the picture that Christ paints for us in this chapter to be wise in how we share the gospel with others!

  87. Mike [True North} says:

23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Our work is never done. Every moment that we live here on earth before the return of Christ is a moment in which people are living who need to hear the Gospel. It can be easy, though we know this, to forget about it as we go about our day on campus. But just today, I was reminded again of all the lost souls around me. I need to be bold in proclaiming the Truth to everyone, trusting God to renew their hearts and praying every day that He will save them and speed His return. MARANATHA! But until then, we have a job to do!

  88. T moore not in a love triangle but a love line (straight to God) says:

6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.

This verse stuck out to me because it reminded me of when Jesus was having dinner with Matthew and other tax collectors (Matthew 9:10 – 13) and the pharisees ask Jesus’ disciples “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” and Jesus replied “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Jesus is telling the pharisees that he has come to save the sinners and not the righteous. I pray that I would be bold for Jesus and to be telling all the people I know about the gospel who haven’t heard it.

  89. jordan Anderson says:

There are some amazing verses in this intense passage.

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is an amazing verse, and really puts things into perspective. Why should we care at all what people think of us here on this earth. They can only hurt us here and now. I need to be more worried about what the Lord thinks of me, because he can kill my soul, and send me into hell for eternity!

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

We are to love God and God alone. Anything else that comes before him is an idol, and therefore we are not worthy of Him. We are to give EVERYTHING up to follow him. He can’t bring any luggage along. Leave it all behind, pick up the cross and follow him, trusting him to guide us through this life on the long and narrow road.

  90. Mark says:

5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.
6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.

This reflects on a previous chapter in Matthew!!! Jesus is intructing the discpiles to go spread the gospel to the “lost sheep.” Why spread to the people who hear it every day but choose to do nothing with it?? The people that need to hear God’s word spoken are those who havnt heard it yet and and are not familiar with it. Same with our day!!! We need to be speaking mainly to people who have not had teaching about God’s word on a regular basis rather than those who hear it two, three or four times a week. Not that those people any less than the others but they are already equipped with the knowledge.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  91. Shane McCuistion 2010 says:

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

As Christians Jesus Christ should be our ALL! We should have NOTHING come before Jesus Christ. Just like Bobby talked about in his sermon last weekend that we should have absolutely no idols that would come before God!!! This is something that I definitely need to take to heart because I always do SOTD and my prayer at the end of the day! I am always being lazy and playing video games, facebook, watching t.v. and I never think to bring glory to God and be a servant to others. I need to get up and start serving my Lord and being an example of Jesus Christ to everyone. SOTD should start to be on my 1st thing of the day to do list. I could really use some accountability for that to.

  92. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that tim e you will be given what to say,
20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.
33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

This is the evangelism chapter for sure! I don’t need to worry about men at all. Never. Because the strength of my God Almighty is far greater than anyone in the whole universe! When I tell others about Christ (which needs to happen more often), I don’t need to worry about a thing. No matter what others say or do to me, I’ll know that I am securing treasures in Heaven! I also don’t need to worry about knowing what to say, because I won’t say a thing! Its all the Holy Spirit working through me to spread the good news to all of Orange County! Not a lot of people like what I as a Christian have to say, which means by following Christ I am sacrificing comfort in this world. But it is definately worth it. If I deny Jesus here on earth, then Jesus will no longer clean my sins so that I can go see the Father when I die. But because I am spreading the gospel to others, I have an eternal life in Jesus Christ that no man can take away, even if I am killed for what I say! I definately need to get further into evangelism and spreading God’s Word to my school, the city of Dana Point, Orange County, California, heck even the world! Im ready to start this Christ campaign.

  93. Meisha Preston says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

We memorized this verse in small groups a couple of weeks ago. This is soooo important to remember! God is the ultimate judge. He can destroy not only my body but my soul. I need to make sure that I’m obedient to God. God is also jealous and will NOT be happy if I put anything before him. God does not tolerate love triangles. So much of the prophets in the OT rebuked Israel for turning from God and putting something else first. I should be so scared of God that I would not dare put anything before him.

Michelle, awesome to see you back on SOTD!!!

  94. Jenae on her itouch says:

I really like verse 33 I believe it is when it’s talking about how you should love God more than your sons or daugters. That totally reminds me of Abraham, I think, when he was about to sacrifice his own son for God!!!!! That’s true faith and love

  95. Colin argue says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
-this is so true don’t be affraid of those who will kill your worldly body be afraid for your spirtual body.

7″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me
-God has to be first in our lifes we cannot love anyone more then him.

  96. josh senger says:

37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me
God is such a huge God and wants all of our love. i like how this verse puts it into perspective of how much we are supposed to love Him. I am supposed to be lovign Him in such a large capacity that it is far more than the people that I love here on earth.

  97. Eric Walker says:

22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

This is a very harsh verse but very true. Because of the Lord, men of the world will hate us, persecute us, and speak out against us. We will be seen as strangers and outsiders, but no matter how bad or how down you feel, it will be sooooo worth it. Just like Jesus says in this passage, if we stick up for him, he will stick up for us before the Father. That is soo legiT. I am persecuted daily at my school and I have my days when I just want to give up and “fit in” but I know that that road leads to eternal damnation, and God’s road, although much harder, will lead to eternal life and be sooo worth it. I pray that no matter how much persecution we face, we would not be discouraged but would press on to win the prize!!!!

  98. Matt Lawler says:

29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.

30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

There is no reason to worry from day to day about anything. If God protects the sparrows then i know He will not let me out of His sight and keep me on the right path to fulfill His plan for me.

  99. Rachel McKee says:

Wow this is a powerful speech that the Lord gives his disciples before he sends them off to evangelize. When I put myself in the disciples shoes, I am afraid because I see the dangers they are about to face from the pharisees and the people. But Jesus tells them God cares about them, he will give them the words to say, and God can put your body and soul in hell, while men can only kill your body (which basically means God has way more power over us than men). Jesus is basically giving his disciples a pep talk and telling them the going is not going to be easy, but it is for the best and they will reap the most rewards out of it than anything else. These verses help encourage me to want to go through persecution for Christ, as it wins me his favor. They also help me to notice the immense sacrifices people make for God, which sets a higher standard for me.

  100. Jonny Wright says:

This is what I call a pep talk. Jesus, talking to the disciples before he sends them out. Giving them comfort: God will care for us more than the sparrows. He warns us: We are sheep among wolves, we will be persecuted and hated. At the end of the chapter he explains our reward: if we give up our life for Jesus he will give us everlasting life. This entire talk should be both a wake-up call and comfort. I need to be ever weary about the wolves that live among the sheep that want to twist God’s word. I need to hold on to God because this world will hate me and persecute me. I need to be a light for the world, and I can’t do this by living in my old life of sin, but I need to live the life that I am now born into. My prayer for tonight is that in the darkness of this world God can use me as a light to lead a lost nation back to the ONE, TRUE, GOD.

  101. Ian H. says:

16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

This is how we need to be all the time. This world is not our home; despite the fact that almost everyone around us is practically screaming the opposite, this is a messed up place. I need to be understanding that every day and getting myself ready for whatever comes my way, whether good or bad. As Jesus says here, I have to be as shrewd as a snake yet as innocent as a dove: both wise/discerning and innocent of evil/different from this world. Peter echoes this theme in 1 Peter 5:8; we always have to be alert and ready. If we relax even a little bit, bad things will happen.

  102. Zach senger 2010 says:

WOW this chapter was non-stop awsomeness!!!! I could comment on every single verse but i will just do one for now!!!
22All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
This is such a major point. We as Christians must stay strong till the end!! We need to stand firm till the end!! It is so sad how already i see Christians falling away and just becoming distant!! We need to make sure that we are not falling away but staying firm till the end! And how are we going to do this you might ask!! We need to be in the word and in prayer every day!! Let us stand firm in Christ till the end!!!

  103. Matt Rex says:

7As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’
This chapter is about commandments and rewards. If we tell and show out Lord to the world we shall be rewarded but He tells us that the road of following Him is rough but we are not alone because He is with us and though we will face persecution He will guide us through it. Such unfailing love! He says that all who did not follow Him will face the consequence. But that should give us Christians more reason to go out in the world and preach.
    God bless, Matt Rex

  104. P.J. says:

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

What happened to the Christmas cards with a white dove and “Peace on Earth” as the title? Yeah Jesus came to bring the joy and peace of salvation, but along with that came a “sword”, or the division of households and communities for the sake of Jesus Christ. If we are to follow Jesus Christ, we will be separated as well from the culture around us. I need to live a life of no compromise that seeks to love Jesus Christ with all of my heart!

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  105. Sara L. says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

This is such a good verse that always stands out to me when I read Matthew. Often I find myself frightened of people when I hear things in the news about murders and other such crimes. It seems logical to fear those things. But the one that I really should be fearing is God! Granted, I shouldn’t deliberately seek out situations in which I could be killed for the purpose of showing I’m not afraid of how people can destroy me. But I *should* walk through life knowing that whatever they might do to me doesn’t matter, but where I stand with God does.

  106. Adam Duarte [True North - 2010] says:

22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Persecutions are going to come our way in this world. As a disciple of Christ, I’ve got to remember that a lot of people aren’t going to like me for it. I’ve already seen people act with unprecedented hostility towards me simply because of my conservative/Christian nature. It’s really surprising sometimes, but then I remember this verse – Jesus said it Himself that people who long to serve Him would be hated and ridiculed.

But then if we look ahead…

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

It says here pretty simply that being afraid of persecution is foolish, and that I should welcome it as a servant of Christ. Because no matter what hardships man may put me through, in the end, God is the one I should fear.

  107. kelly causky says:

34″Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to turn ” ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -
36a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

This really shows us how important Jesus Christ should be in our lives. We need to be willing to risk relationships for Him. He needs to be first in our hearts all the time, forever.

  108. Hannah says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ahh soooo good!! This last week at OCHSA’s Free Lunch Christian Club we talked about the only way to heaven and it sparked a lot of good conversation in and outside of the club!! We totally saw God do a work in that room!! But I was getting a lot of interesting comment such as, “We aren’t supposed to fear God…” or “We shouldn’t be afraid of God and that show not be the reason someone comes to know Him.” These all were very interesting to hear but also good for me address! If gave me a chance to really think about the idea of fearing God! I know that we all need and I need a healthy fear for the Lord….and with a fear for the Lord we have less of a desire to fear something on this earth!! This was an awesome verse and reminder for me tonight!! Praise God!!!

And Praise God for everyone on SOTD! I pray that we ALL can keep it up….INCLUDING myself!!:D

  109. John K says:

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell

I know that pretty much half of the post’s today are on this verse, but that just because its so convicting and probably because we all struggle with the fear of man. I heard a preacher today on my IPod talk about the difference between the fear of man and the fear of God. Imagine you are caught between a butterfly and roaring lion, both animals are fully intent on ripping your head off. Which direction are you going to run? I would take my chances against the butterfly. You see the butterfly represents the fear man and the roaring lion the Fear of God. The damage God can inflict on you is eternal and unchanging. When we die God either sends us to heaven or hell. Eternal burning in a lake of fire that is never extinguished is way worse than any temporary suffering man can put you through here on this earth. I need to remember this the next time I get scared about sharing the gospel.

34″Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

I love this because it goes completely against the messed up form of morality that the world has concocted for this age. People are so touchy and scared of offending people but Jesus Christ said He came to bring division. He wants us to spread the gospel and tell people they need to repent even if they don’t want to hear it. I know for me, I don’t really like getting into confrontations with people all that much, and I know that I have been guilty in the past of maybe not saying all that needs to be said in a conversation out of fear of offending people. But Jesus says that the Gospel brings division, so I need to realize that even though it might offend people I need to tell the truth and even go confront people about sin because it might lead them to salvation. And that is so worth a little bit of hard feelings someone might initially have, awkward conversations, or any persecution.

  111. sam says:

33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

What i got out of this verse was that if you disown God before other men Jesus will disown you. THis means we must got out into this world and proclaim our faith and love for Jesus

  112. Evan McKee says:

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

God hates it when someone has idols before him. These verses really drove home the point to me that I can have nothing before God, not even my own family. He wants to be our most treasured possession, and deserves to be so. no earthly gift can even come close to God’s greatness.

sorry this is late, my server went down for a while.

  113. Tanner says:

1He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. this shows the power of jesus and how amazing he is. i neeed to work on worshiping him how he should be worshiped.

this chapter is too awesome!!!!!!!! wow!!!

Well the first half of this chapter (Matthew 10:1-24) definitely reminds me of Pastor Bobby’s sermon on suffering through trials! Jesus is talking to his disciples. his BRAND NEW disciples. He has just called them together and now he is telling them all of these things that they are going to have to do, and all the things that will happen to them, and what it takes to be a follower of Christ! Its not gonna be easy to live the Christian life, and to claim to be a son/daughter of Jesus Christ, but it is worth it in the end!

Matthew 10:32 “So everyone who acknowleges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.”

  116. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

wooooooow 115 comments…and i wasn’t even on it! XD No fair! sooo now I’m commenting. How amazing it must of been to be Jesus’ disciples back then….but guess what we are now?? :D WE’RE HIS DISCIPLES CALLED TO LIVE FOR HIM TODAY! It brings me great joy to see all these comments, knowing that if any of us were killed for His name, we’d be one, sad at first, but then joyful! because we knoooow that that person would be celebrating in Heaven, finally with their Lord. :) persecution is what I seek….and i will seek it today.

  117. Rebekah Foreman says:

    37″Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

God needs to be first in everything!! I need to make it so God is 1st in everything I do and not 2nd! I pray that He will always be first.

  118. Lexi Mathes says:

19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

I love this chapter the more I read it =]
Its comforting knowing God is protecting me when I’m not sure of what to say when others question me. I know he put the right words in my mouth when I put myself in an uncomfortable situation for Him last week. God is good.
