Psalm 147

He Heals the Brokenhearted

147:1 Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the humble;
he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre!
He covers the heavens with clouds;
he prepares rain for the earth;
he makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the beasts their food,
and to the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
he blesses your children within you.
14 He makes peace in your borders;
he fills you with the finest of the wheat.
15 He sends out his command to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives snow like wool;
he scatters hoarfrost like ashes.
17 He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs;
who can stand before his cold?
18 He sends out his word, and melts them;
he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
his statutes and rules to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any other nation;
they do not know his rules.
Praise the Lord! (ESV)

    He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.
    It’s amazing that the nation that God revealed himself to,ended up rejecting his son Jesus Christ. It seems Israel should have been prepared for Jesus Christ and his ministry more than any other nation. But it didn’t work out that way, and instead the Gospel was brought to the Gentile nations. I am praising the Lord for his Sovereign plan and am ever so thankful for my salvation.

  2. Dave Hosford, grateful husband of Sue says:

    A poetic description of the Almighty! But check out Ps 147:3-4

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    He knows everything in the universe and still creates peace for His enemies (us)! And since we have His peace in the form of a new heart – what does He want us to do about it? Mat 28:19 is a great place to start…

  3. Josh Larson says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
    it is important that we go to God for help when we need it because he will help us. he wont let us fall away. i need to work on going to God for help more often

  4. Stacy Perkins says:

    So many gooodies in this little Psalm. Man, the POWER God has. I was witnessing to one of my borthers last night, and he said, having been a typical Orange Countian who grew up in a home that claimed Christianity, “Why don’t you take this concern you have to someone who WANTS it and NEEDS it? Why don’t you take your passion for Jesus to India, or to the cannibals of a third world country, who WANTS to hear what yoy have to say? I already KNOW Jesus, Stace. You’re starting a war with the wrong people when you come to your family, who are already Christian. And you really need to stop with the whole Jesus thing every time we see you. Nobody wants to hear it. YAH, He’s God and everything. We get it. But let’s talk about something ELSE, something that MATTERS. Let UP a little, HUH?!”

    It broke my heart. Orange County is a BATTLEFIELD. There IS a spiritual battle happening all around us. We have to be in PRAYER MODE. Prayer WARRIORS. There is NOTHING I could have said to my older brother to change his heart or take off the blinders. It’s the Holy Spirit. But we MUST be faithful in representing Him. We are not our own anymore, when we surrender to Him. We were purchased by His blood. And how grateful we should be. The verses that pierced me the most are:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds
    He gets into the ugly of our wounds. He is not squeamish. He will fix us and heal us and restore us.

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.
    Well-timed, wouldn’t you agree, in light of Pastor Bobby’s Theophobia message to us. MAN, I love how Scripture comes together. Here we are in PSALMS, and it is in complete synchronization with what we are learning in I Peter. LOVE IT!

    15 He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.
    16 He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.
    17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?
    18 He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
    The power He has over the ELEMENTS, even. Man, God, You make me bow DOWN. Left SPEECHLESS…

    Excited to see everyone and celebrate life today at True North. SO stoked…

  5. Beth Lauder says:

    I like how both the opening line of Psalm 147 and the final line are a call to praise the Lord. In between the first and last line are truths about God that give us more reason to praise Him. Isn’t that how we should live our lives? First thing in the morning, continually throughout the day, then the last thing we do before we go to sleep is praise the Lord. He is so worthy of all our praise.

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    Verse 11 really stood out to me. I want to delight the Lord, and this verse makes it very clear how to do that…to FEAR Him! We just talked about that in our sermon last weekend and at small groups last week. My goal is to truly fear God. One way I can show this is to evangelize the non-Christians in my life. If I do not give in to the fear of man and instead fear God and obey His Word I will be more bold in my witnessing to the lost. I also was struck by the truth that all my hope must be in God and in His unfailing love. I must not hope in other people or earthly things. They will just fail to meet my expectations and let me down. Only God, who is the immutable, omnipotent One in all the universe is worthy of my fear and hope. Praise the Lord!

  6. Ben Blakey says:

    7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp.
    8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.
    9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.

    One thing I noticed about the Psalmist here is that he is very aware of the little, natural things that are going on around him everyday, like rain, grass growing, animals eating. And he doesn’t just notice these things and say, “Oh, that’s cool!” but his thinking is then pointed towards God in praise. I want to have that same reaction to all the things that are going on around me everyday!

  7. Alicia Karlsson says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    What an important part of our relationship to God as his children. We should always be giving God praise. It is good to praise God. I like how the psalmist uses the words pleasant and fitting. The word pleasant in the greek also means delight, agreeable, and the word fitting means, suitable or appropriate. This really makes me think when we sing praises to God it is not just “a nice thing to do”, but it is actually the appropriate thing to do. It is what fits because of who God is. I know this is something that I have been trying to do more in my time through out the day. I pick certain praise music that will help me think on who God is and then worship and praise him for that. And so I agree with the psalmist 100% when he says How pleasant and fitting it is to praise him!

  8. Dan Lauder says:

    10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man;
    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    Our society is all about praising the biggest, baddest, strongest, and those who use their own might to achieve success. However, God takes pleasure and praises those who fear him. Those who have not only a deep reverence and respect for Him, but those who have a healthy fear of what he could do to them and to others by destroying them in the lake of fire. As we learned from last week’s sermon we know we are fearing God if we #1 stop sinning and #2 evangelize. To get God’s praise, these are the things I need to focus on.

  9. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like verse 11,”The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

    I like this verse because it tells us that the LORD is happy when people are afraid of HIM. HE isn’t happy because they are scared but because they will not sin as much because they are afraid of HIS wrath. When I was little I was always scared of getting caught sinning cause I would get punished. This is the same concept except you are in the hands of the GOD who can destroy you body and soul in HELL. It is much better to fear GOD then to fear man who can just make fun of us or kill us. In my opinion if I get killed for JESUS then I will actually be getting rewarded cause I go to HEAVEN and sin no longer.

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    I can’t wait to praise the Lord this morning at church! It is so good to sing and shout joyfully to our King in praise! But even more important I am looking forward to that day when we are in the new Jerusalem and can sing to the Lord a new song. That will be some awesome worship! We will, for the first time, see the full glory of the Lord and know truly why He is worthy of all praise.

    See everyone @ main service and True North!

  11. Never Take David Personal says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    Indescribable, uncontainable……God is awesome. We know God is holy and verses like these show it. I mean who else knows the stars by name. Man’s knowledge is limited but God’s isn’t. I can’t even comprehend what unlimited understanding would be like. Amazing, let’s praise our God.

  13. Chelseaaa says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds

    Our Father in Heaven heals us and wipes away our tears. Dont be discouraged for we have our Lord on our side watching over us always. Lord help me to praise your name even in my sickness, help me to always put you first.

  14. Alyssa K says:

    7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;
    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    This reminds me to praise God and be thankful for all He has blessed me with. It is important to not get caught up in what we always want, but be grateful for what we have. As for fearing God, we should not (like Bobby said last week) think fear means to just respect, it means to be very afraid of. When I think of how huge the universe is, and how God created all thats in it, and then think of how God is grander than all that He has created, that makes me fear Him. He is powerful beyond my comprehension.

  15. cristina brower says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    I get speechless when i think about How amazing God is! when you look up in the sky at night and see all of the millions of starts in the sky, and to think that God placed them all in their certain spot, and named each and everyone one of them is just amazing!!

  16. Allen McAnlis says:

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    The LORD should be feared more then anything. He is merciful and loving but He can also do more to us then any creature on earth. We fear men because they might reject us or make fun of us, but God can destroy both flesh and soul in hell. I should be more afraid of that then what someone might think of me when I evangelize to them.

  17. Elizabeth Holt, follower of our Lord Jesus Christ :D says:

    10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man;
    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    God does not care what we look like, how good at sports we are, or how popular we are. He loves us for how much we fear Him. He looks at our heart, not at our face. He loves me for how much I love Him and strive to be like Him. I shouldn’t care how others judge me, i should only care how God does. This is so comforting because what can the people fo this world really do to me?? God is the only one who can hurt me, and I’m on HIs team. Who is there to fear?? I should not be living to please the world, but to please God and have the right fear of Him. Because the people of this world cannot condemn me body and soul…God can. I am a Theophobe.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Sarah G.! says:

    This whole Psalm has fantastic similes and metaphors emphasizing God’s great power and creations!! I love it!! It makes one believe that creating the world was as easy as counting to three in God’s eyes, in which it probably was!! It makes me want to praise Him for His awesome power and for how He has created us individually in His own mind!! :D

  19. Angela says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

    no matter what troubel your in God will always be there. I think that I need to remember this more because when i face a problem i don’t always go to God first and he is the main one that i can trust. God is the one that can help you go forward with things in life and when I’m down i need to remember to look to him for help :)

  20. kY!3 says:

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    Fear is not a bad thing, keep that in mind. Fearing God is a good thing because just like those little kids (or maybe even you) are delighting in the candy they recieved last night, so does God delight in those who fear him and their hope in his unfailing love. I need to fear God more.

    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    “his understanding has no limit” God understands everything basically. He understands all that type of science, which we humans can even get close to right in some cases. that phrase is pretty powerful!

    8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.

    This is so cool!!! No such thing as mother nature really, it’s God who is choosing what happens wheather He’s making the grass grow on the hill. covers the sky with clouds. He makes rain fall.

  21. Murphy Danahy says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    I’ve had a bit of a tough week. It’s kind of felt like the whole world, and everything beyond it has been conspiring to make me seriously sad. Then I remembered, they are! I just have to focus on the one thing that can’t be ruined or taken away. GOD’s love and promise.

  22. Jasmine says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    Awesome way to start off this Psalm. It is good indeed to sing praises to our Lord. True North rocked in worship this morning and it truly does brighten my day to praise the Lord with singing! Not only that, but more importantly, it brings glory to our heavenly Father, and that’s what matters most! I want to make it a point to praise God throughout the entire day! Constantly bringing him glory through all that I do!

  23. DB 2010 says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    Right away the song Indescribable came into thought. That whole song is about the amazing qualities of the Lord, like how He calls each star by name. We can’t even begin to comprehend the fullness and eternal splendor of Him! Every day we see and live in His creation and we need to be thankful and praise the Maker of heaven and earth for what He has done!

  24. Steffen Eriksen says:

    10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man;

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    Right here in this verse the psalmist is talking about what pleases the LORD, along with what doesn’t please him. He writes that God does not take pleasure in mighty and strong horses. He doesn’t take pleasure in the legs of a man either. The verse says that the LORD delights in those who fear Him, who are trusting in His unfailing love. Many people find their delight in their possessions. They search far and wide and seek after what they think are the best things here on earth. So many people find contentment in money alone, and others can only be happy when they are with their friends. These things are not the things that God delights in. He delights in people who fear Him. This is the way He calls everyone to look at Him: in fear! Many people will sadly settle to be satisfied with that which can never truly satisfy or make happy. The things of this earth are fleeting, like the time it takes for the blinking of an eye. I need to always fear the LORD, living out my life in a way that He will be happy. He isn’t satisfied when I am glorified in front of other men, or when I make a large earthly gain, but He is satisfied to see me fearing Him and trusting in His love, and I know that His love will never fail me! I want to be someone in whom the LORD delights, not someone living here on earth in vain!

  25. Zach Vanden Bosch says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    God deserves our praise so much. I love to sing worship, it’s just so refreshing. It was awesome today at TN because we sung like six songs and it was all good worship. It wasn’t distracting in any way, it was just awesome. It is just so cool to worship God.

  26. Alison says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    Worship was so amazing this morning! In fact I came home today and ended up playing worship music for another hour because its so wonderful to praise the Lord!! It really helps me to keep that MARANATHA mindset and not get caught up in the things of this world. Like Pastor Mike said today we need to be set apart from the world like live people among zombies!! I cannot wait to be with the Lord for ever and ever and be rid of the sin of living in the flesh!! That will be SO amazing!!!
    “Beholding Your beauty is all that I long for, to worship you Jesus is my sole desire…”

  27. Tristan Jorden says:

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    This verse stood out to me; especially now as I have an even better understanding of it after hearing Bobby’s sermon on fearing God. I need to be fully aware of God’s ability to judge and discipline me and I need to be cognizant of the fact that He can send those who are unworthy to hell. So, not only do I need to be living my life to please God (because I fear not living to please Him), I need to evangelize to those who do not live for God so that they might be saved (so that they will stop fearing the world and fear God instead).
    What I also like about this verse is how fear and unfailing love are connected. It is so similar to a child and a parent. A child should want to please a parent because a parent will display love to the child. In the same way, if the child does something that is wrong, the parent will discipline the child (which the child will fear then and in the future), but it’s due to the parent’s love that the child is being disciplined.

  28. 4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.
    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    God is SO powerful…to think that He knows the stars and calls them by name, EVERY STAR, just blows my mind! He is truly great and worthy to be praised :)). This humbles me and makes me want to praise the Lord and bring Him glory in ALL things. It also is an encouragement to me to know that the God is serve is not a small one, He is sovereign and BIG and in control of ALL things!

  29. Jasmine Theophobe says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

    It’s so awesome that we’re almost done with the psalms! I really love this verse. It’s so comforting and encouraging. God is the only one who can heal broken hearts and bind up wounds and nothing or no one else. It’s sad when I see people who look and turn to other things to heal their pain and fill up their emptiness. I remember when I used to do it before I became a Christian. When troubles and trials come in life God is always there to heal us. I’ve seen God restore my broken life and mend it together. I’m a completely different person and a new creation in Jesus!

  30. Keegan says:

    10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man;
    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    I love this verse because it tells us how God doesn’t care about our apperences or our strength, but whether or not we fear Him ( not with reveremce but with Theophobia) and put our faith in Him.

  31. Melissa Cox says:

    14 He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.

    As a new mother I find myself being more thankful than ever before for God’s provision. I realize that I’ve done nothing to deserve to be well fed and taken care of, but that these things are all blessings from God. My son Caleb has done nothing to deserve having all the nourishment he needs to survive, but God has blessed him in abundance. Thank you God for taking care of us.

  32. katie baxter says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    God is amazing! The fact that he is the one who put the stars in the sky, and he knows them by name literally blows my mind away. And this is our God! It is so comforting to know that he understands everything, and that we can have salvation for our sins and a personal relationship with such a mighty and amazing God.

  33. Katie Slusher says:

    8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. 9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.

    So much of the Psalms are filled with reasons to praise the Lord. What stood out to me in these verses is the Psalmist is prasing God for things that I typically overlook or take for granted. Hardly do I notice the grass growing and praise the Lord for his providence. However, I need to remember that all these things are blessings from God. He has given food for the cattle, which eventually provides me food. He provides the earth with rain, which allows crops to grow. I need to not overlook the small things, but remember to praise Him in everything.

  34. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    God is so good. I love how this verse shows me how great it is to praise a God the deserves our praise. He has done so much and I just need to remember to put Him first all the time.

  35. Matt Lawler says:

    7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp.

    8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.

    9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.

    As thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded that we are being constantly blessed by God, it is important to remember to be thankful to God for all the blessings he gives us!

  36. ShAnNoN TwEeD!!! says:

    there is so many great verses to choose from! but i think something many of us need to work on is humility!

    6 The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.

    The Lord created us for a purpose; to worship HIM; He alone is worthy of our praise and when we are praised for our accomplishments here on earth we should show humility because “it is not of ourselves, but a gift from God! So that no man should boast!”

  37. Rebekah Foreman says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds
    God heals the brokenhearted and binds up our wounds. We sin and He forgives us and we shall turn from that sin.

  38. payton :D says:

    8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.

    I really like this verse because the writer/author person notices the little things and thanks God for it. If I am ever sitting outside I just see all the stuff around me and how great God is, that He has blessed me sooooo much. I mean grass and trees, green is beautiful and if we didn’t have trees we wouldn’t have the oxygen they provide. ;] The littlest things are important. Every little characteristic about me, God designed. How AWESOME!!! I mean, I would not be who I am, where I am, if it weren’t the little things God has done in my life. Little things do matter. Especially if they lead up to the big things.
    God is amazing and deserves all the glory! So instead of going green, I’m going for God!!! :]

    ***GO GOD!!!***

  39. Meisha Preston says:

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    This verse made me think of Bobby’s sermon last weekend on fearing the Lord. This verse says that God delights in those who fear him. When I fear God that makes him happy with me. I want God to be happy with me, I want to please God. I love how fearing God is then connected with putting my hope in his unfailing love. Usually people don’t connect fear with love but here they totally go together. I need to fear God because of his wrath and his judgment on sin. My fear of God should make me STOP SINNING. But at the same time I don’t have to fear judgment for eternity in hell because God loved me by sending Christ to die for my sin and take my punishment. I can put my hope in this. It isn’t a “cross my fingers” hope. It is a certain hope that when one day I stand before God I will not be sent to hell.

  40. 1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!
    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    The Psalmist’s goal in this chapter was obviously to give praise to God. God truly is wonderful, mighty, great, beyond our understanding, and we should constantly be praising him for it! Verse one is how I want to feel everyday…excited to be in worship with the God of the universe who calls each star by name! I like what Miss Katie Baxter said..that we should simply praise God that he allows us to have a relationship with him-the Creator of the Universe. I need to worhsip God in song way more…like listening to it more on my ipod and also praising him with the way I live.

  41. Bryan Sonksen says:

    I read…

    Psalm 147

    I liked verse 3… “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” In reading the Psalms, we learn about what God is like. I loved this verse because it reminds us how merciful He is towards us. Because even after He died on the cross and suffered to take away our sins, He still is willing to help us even though He has already helped us in a great way. I thank God for how wonderful and awesome He is. I am praying for this week at school that we would be lights!

    I read . . .

    Psalm 147 . . .

    “8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.”

    This is a perfect verse to prove to non-believers that God made the Earth. It says it right here, in plain/clear writing, that God with His own hands, made the world. Personally, I found this very AWE-INSPIRING! To know that my God, my Savior, my Creator, made everything. To know that He made the endless blue sky with clouds. He supllied, supplies, and will supply the Earth with water from rain. He made, makes, and will make grass grow on the hills surrounding me.

    “11. the Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.”

    To me, this verse is saying that God will delight in me and be pleased me with me. I know this is an awesome verse to think about when walking around school. To continuously say in my head, God will love me with His unfailing love when I fear Him. When I am frightened and terrorized to break His commands/law. This is an encouraging verse to know when evangelizing. Along with everyday life. =)

    “3. He healds the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

    No worries! God is in control and He will patch me up from the scratches of the world. My God will not only protect me, but He’ll also heal those who are brokenhearted. The wounds that are caused from their sinful surroundings, God will cleanse.

    as it’s fit for the works of Your hands.
    Now unto the Lamb, who sits on the throne,
    be Glory, and Honor, and Praise,
    all of creation resounds in the song,
    worship and praise Him, the Lord of Lords.
    Lord of LORDS!”

  43. Michelle [Slave for Christ] 2010 says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

    In our deepest and hardest trials and tests of faith, the Lord remains CONSTANT. I feel that i have learned that by not leaning and trusting fully in the Lord, I will end up in the worst place ever..completely unsatisfied and not full of the reverence of the Lord. God is always here and His love always remains. So if we have such a good God, then why is it that we struggle with complete obedience towards Him? I know that in my case, its because of complete selfishness. I recently have been in a not so good situation, and Pastor Bobby made me realize that i need to check my heart. I need to be sure that Gods commands are first in my life. I need to always obey His commands, whether the truth hurts or not and God will deliver. God will carry out His perfect plan. I have such a wonderful God, and i need to respect Him more and fully obey His commands, no matter what; NO COMPROMISE!

  44. kelly causky says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    I was reading this book the other day, and it talked about how scientists predict there to be billions of billions of stars in the universe. Most scientists believe these stars to be a mere accident, an accident of a chaotic explosion. But we know that God created each and every one and gave them each a name. Our Lord is amazing!

  45. ELLA says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    “Praise the LORD”, I should always praise the LORD because HE is just so amazing.

  46. Mike says:

    When reading a psalm that so clearly describes the awesomeness of God’s power, it is easy to put things in perspective. God is so much greater than anything else in the universe; He created everything else in the universe. He is deserving of all the praise we could ever give Him, and so much more. Reading this convicted me of the times when I let things get in the way of spending time in the Word or praying; for some trivial matter, I was turning my back on the God who is all powerful, all-knowing, and yet still covers me in a love that I could never deserve! Psalms such as these are definitely a motivation to let nothing stop me from living every moment of my life to bring glory to the Lord, as He deserves.

  47. Shelby Sawyer says:

    3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.
    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    I love all of these verses! Verse three shows how God is such a loving God, and how He really truly cares about us. Then verse four shows just how amazing and incomprehensible His power is. Just to think that the Lord knows everything and created everything just humbles me and reminds me how small I am compared to the Lord. The Lord is sooo perfect and powerful that his understanding has no limit, WOW!!! Our Lord is truly amazing and perfect.

  48. Josh Foreman says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    Remember this the next time someone tells you about “the Big Bang” or some scientific explanation of how the universe began. Funny how people with maybe 90 years on this earth can tell you with certainty what they “know” happened “billions and billions of years ago”. When these people ask you how knowing God is to create such a vast universe, there your answer is right in verse 5 “his understanding has no limit”.

  49. Allie Moorefield(: says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.
    5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

    Our God is so mighty!!! He knows every star in the universe and placed them all there for a certain reason and gave each one a name! You cant look up at the sky and look around at the world and say there is no God! God created everything on this earth and created it in his own way. I love verse 5 because it shows how great and powerful the Lord is and how his understanding has no limit! This verse is proof that God created this universe!
    Our God is mighty (:

  50. Lizzie McCoy says:

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    God is amazing and deserves all my praise! End of Story

  51. JWade says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    our God is so amazingly powerful! humans cannot even fathom how many stars are in the sky, much less name them! if God is this powerful He needs to be respected and feared. if we fear and respect Him then we cannot use His name in vain. i do not have a problem with using His name in vain, but i know alot of people who have a very bad habbit of throwing around “omg’s” like they are nothing, i need to step it up and be bold. i need to man up and tell people to stop saying that because it is disrespecting the almighty God who saved me. Gods name needs to be sacred for us and special.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. Jordan Anderson says:

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    The Lord has done some amazing things in my life, and i am so thankful. As much as i love the Lord, i also need to understand how to fear him more.

  53. Jordan Anderson says:

    great comment allie!

  54. P.J. says:

    “the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

    The conviction of Bobby’s sermon on fearing God is still in my heart! Knowing that on the Day of Judgment, all my sins will be made know creates an even greater desire to stop sinning. I also need to be putting all of my hope in his unfailing love, that he would guide me to do his will through me. I need to trust in God more and more and be praying for the strength to take the promised “way out” when temptations attack me.

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. jacksondahl says:

    Most of this Psalm is talking about the majesty of the LORD and all the amazing things He has done. When you really stop to look at everything in this world, it is so incredible! Just this morning, I was thinking that, and then I realized, if this is how amazing God made an earth that is not perfect, I can only imagine how unbelievable awe-inspiring heaven will be! I cannot wait for that day! Due to the fact that the LORD is SO powerful and mighty, I need to fear him…

    11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

    God DELIGHTS in those who fear him. This means He is filled with joy when I am frightened of him. When I fear the LORD, I will be much less likely to sin. I have been really focusing on fearing God lately, and I have been noticing that when I am tempted to sin, I think about how angry God will be at me after I do and that I will have to talk to him about each and every sin I ever committed when I get to heaven. This has really been helping me keep an ongoing war against sin, which is something the bible says we need to do! It is so important that we fear God, because in doing so, we are continuing to fight against the temptations of this world in an effort to please him through righteousness!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!

    LETS HAVE A SERIOUS REVIVAL THIS WEEK AT CAMPUS LUNCHES AND SMALL GROUPS THIS WEEK!!!

  56. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 147

    15 He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.

    God’s powerful Word is uncontainable and everlasting. Nothing can stop the will of the Lord in spreading His Gospel throughout the world. Praise be the Lord for His Glory. We should be so encouraged by a passage like this to fulfill God’s Great Commission of the Gospel which spreads swiftly. Just as others have gone before us we have the great responsibility of carrying on the will of the Lord. Today at True North we were reminded of imperative need to equip believers to go out into the world and spread the Gospel. I pray that True North would produce disciples who are led by the Spirit into missions. We live in such a bubble here in the US that we can forget about the millions of people who are worshiping God in secret under persecution or those who have never heard the Gospel because of political injustice. As Christians we should have a great compassion and desire to expedite the Gospel in to our communities and to the rest of the world.

    Maranatha!

    Romans 15:20 20 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. 21 Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”

  57. Evan McKee says:

    4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

    The universe is so amazing to me. It’s so big It’s impossible for the human brain to comprehend, but God was able to make all of it. The stars are an excellent picture of God’s power. Our sun releases so much energy, that the energy we create here on earth can’t even compare with it. In addition to that, our sun is about the size of the moon is compared to the sun when it is measured against larger stars, and he created billions of them and could make as many more as he wanted to. Men are powerless when compared to God!

  58. Haley Litz says:

    15 He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.
    16 He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.
    17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?
    18 He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

    In my bible, I had next to these verses, 2 Thessalonians 3:1 which says “Finally, brohters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.” And next to that passage, it said Revival Winter Edition ’09!!!! I remember when Pastor Bobby preached on this at the last RWE! For the words, “spread rapidly”, I had written “run!”. I need to be praying first off, that God’s word will be spread quickly, and second, I need to go and do it and be the one running his word to others or spreading it quickly!

  59. Pastor Bobby says:

    That is encouraging Haley that you had that in your Bible! Way to take good notes!

    1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

    I did announcements in the main service this morning and so I was walking into True North late. But as I came into the building I could hear so many people singing at True North! At that moment, it definitely seemed pleasant and fitting to praise the Lord! That got me excited! Let’s keep praising the Lord!

  60. Two things really struck me about this awesome psalm! One is that God is mighty and powerful, he has understanding that man cannot fathom, there is no even comparable to God! The other thing is that God cares for people. He heals the brokenhearted and he delights in those who fear him. Sometimes people act like God owes them, as if they are on the same level with God. This chapter gives me a much needed perspective that God is so high and exalted and powerful and I am not in a place to argue with, fight against or question him. He has extended salvation to me and made me a new creation in Christ, how mind blowing that he would love me like that. I don’t know why I would do anything but fear him, obey him and worship him all of my life! That is my prayer!
