Nahum 2

The Destruction of Nineveh

2:1 The scatterer has come up against you.
Man the ramparts;
watch the road;
dress for battle;
collect all your strength.

For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
as the majesty of Israel,
for plunderers have plundered them
and ruined their branches.

The shield of his mighty men is red;
his soldiers are clothed in scarlet.
The chariots come with flashing metal
on the day he musters them;
the cypress spears are brandished.
The chariots race madly through the streets;
they rush to and fro through the squares;
they gleam like torches;
they dart like lightning.
He remembers his officers;
they stumble as they go,
they hasten to the wall;
the siege tower is set up.
The river gates are opened;
the palace melts away;
its mistress is stripped; she is carried off,
her slave girls lamenting,
moaning like doves
and beating their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool
whose waters run away.
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
but none turns back.
Plunder the silver,
plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
or of the wealth of all precious things.

10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
Hearts melt and knees tremble;
anguish is in all loins;
all faces grow pale!
11 Where is the lions’ den,
the feeding place of the young lions,
where the lion and lioness went,
where his cubs were, with none to disturb?
12 The lion tore enough for his cubs
and strangled prey for his lionesses;
he filled his caves with prey
and his dens with torn flesh.

13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard. (ESV)

    Isreal is a symbol of God’s grace; of how God always kept His promise even though Isreal kept turning away from God. As Christians, when we sin, we are turning away from God. Is God faithful? Yes, absolutely; but if we have this mindset that we can sin all we want and Jesus will pay for it we aren’t really Christians. We will still sin, but our lives are turned around and we are repenting from sin. Lord, when I sin thank you for restoring me time after time and help me to sin less and less.

    • Taylin Reinholtz says:

      I agree with you completely! So many people have that mindset that we can just keep on sinning and then expect God to forgive us everytime. That’s why we have to have TRUE repentance. (:

      great comment Zach!

    Our God is loving, but he is also Good. That is why He judges sin in such a way. Nothing evil or sinful has the right to be in His presence. Everytime we sin, we are angering Him. After repentance our lives should no longer me ruled by ourselves and sin.

  3. James is exited for camp compass says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This verse is saying that God is disappointed with them and he is basically saying if i gave it to you ,which is everything, then i can take it away a lot easier.

  4. Meisha Preston from Aliso/Dana says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    It is a scary thing to have the Lord against you. Against the Lord none can stand. The Lord will one day pour out all his wrath on the earth. That is not going to be a good day. Men will want to die but will not be able to. I’m thankful that I will never have to endure God’s judgment. It is so awesome that God is a just God but that he is also a loving God. He poured out his love on us by sending Christ to die for us. I need to make sure that everyone I know knows the good news of Jesus Christ.

  5. Holden Raulston says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This proves once again that our God loves us and isnt afraid to punish us for our sin. Its kinda scarry to think about after this passage, but at the same time i feel blessed because I know that god cares whether or not i sin. This passage has defiently reminded me about how mad God gets when I sin, and it made me want to keep on fighting sin .

  6. Michaela Adler says:

    9 Plunder the silver, plunder the gold!
    There is no end of the treasure or of the wealth of all precious things.

    What I got from this verse is worldly things are “unending” and they are worth a lot of money.
    All precious metals and stones are really sought over here on earth and basically everyone wants them for their wealth.
    They want to collect as many precious things as possible to get as much money as possible.
    However, stones, metals, and money are all perishable.
    So storing up precious things on this earth is pointless, because you can’t take it with you for one, and two, it’s not immortal, it won’t sustain for eternity like salvation in Christ will.
    That’s the treasure we need to be storing.
    We need to be living for the next life as opposed to this one and be storing our “treasures” in heaven.
    Treasures like good deeds, and our faith in Christ, and our whole heart for God.
    I know I need to work on living for the next life as opposed to this one and stop worrying about what tomorrow will bring and start preparing for the next life by living for Him and spreading His word.
    “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thrives break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard

    As I said in my last post, although being angry against other is sometimes a sin for us, it is never one for our LORD because He has a righteous anger. This verse is amazing to me because it shows that the LORD will protect us and destroy anyone who trys to harm us/is evil (:

    • Alicia Karlsson RADICALLY REVIVED BY A RIGHTEOUS GOD! says:

      That is so true, Gods anger is always righteous. Great insight.

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Like Meisha said, it would be very scary to have the Almighty God against you. If we think about it, He is already against all human beings because of their sin. God is against sin, so you would think He would be against sinners! But, in His neverending love, He sent Jesus to pa the penalty for us and save people from eternity in hell.

  9. Ella says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God is disappointed that his people turned away. Now that they have gone separate ways from God, God must put his judgement on them because they deserve it. When we sin we deserve the wrath of God, but we must repent and not do that sin deliberately again. God’s wrath is a scary thing and we need to remember that He can do absolutely anything at anytime.

  10. j. watkins says:

    I’m reminded right now of what it means to fear God..
    This chapter clearly shows me what it’s like to be on the side that God isn’t so happy with.. and I know I don’t want to be there.
    But if I don’t want to on the side of God’s wrath, I’m going to have to run to God–there’s nowhere else to hide.
    Keeping a relationship with him, and serving him.

  11. 2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    Even though we have seen the Lord calling down judgment and indictments of Israel throughout the Minor Prophets, He still loves His people and He will restore them. Even though Israel has been plundered by plunderers, like the Assyrians, the Lord is more powerful and is able to bring her back to her former majesty. In this chapter we see that the Lord is bringing destruction and judgment down on Nineveh (the capitol of the Assyrian Empire). I found this encouraging, and I’m sure that the Israelites who heard or read Nahum’s prophesy were too. I know that God has my back and that nothing can snatch me from His hand (see John 10:28-29). He will judge and destroy those who afflict His people and those who sin against Him, as we see in this verse. I am praying that I will be comforted today because of God’s sovereignty and His great power!

  12. GOD IS INTENSE! He wants everyone to turn from their sin and put their faith in Him. When I was reading this, I could totally see the chariots that “dart like lightning”..so cool! Once Jesus comes back, we will be one of those soldiers for Him….but noooow we actuallly are too! :D I am a soldier for Christ that is ready to do His will, but am I ready all the time? I constantly need to be checking my heart to see if it is in the right place. May the Lord kill my sin and may I glorify Him with my service today at Camp Compass! Maranathaaaa. :)

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This was a pretty intense chapter. It was all about the destruction of Nineveh, and it was described in such a way that it would make no one want to be a Ninevite. This verse in particular stood out to me. It says very to the point that the Lord was against the people of Nineveh. That alone makes me think that I do not want the Lord to say that to me, because that would be the worst thing that could ever happen. I mean, the Ruler of the earth telling you He was against YOU? But then He even goes on to say that He was going to destroy everything- their animals, chariots, and even people. Even today, God is against a lot of people – the non-Christians. Not only is He eventually (if not already to some) destroy them, but once the non-Christians die, they’re going to meet Christ and find out that they’re going to hell, which after hearing Pastor Lucas’s sermon no one should want to go there. I need to be telling more people about the gospel and about the consequences they will face if they don’t choose the Lord, because I don’t want anybody to be told by Christ that He is against them.

  14. Dave Hosford, praying for continued RevivalX here in this place says:

    Nahum 2

    Then: God is done with Nineveh. They were not His chosen people but He wanted them to come to repentance (Jonah 3:10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.)

    Always: God desires all to come to repentance and trust in Him. Not all are decreed to salvation. Rev 7:9-10 …behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

    Now: only God knows whom He has called and when they will respond but lots of people from every nation will be saved. It’s our job to boldly proclaim the word and fish for men! Let’s bring revival to our neighbors and family because time is short and today is the day of His grace! If you are ‘revived’ from the dead be part of His plan!

  15. 2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    God has used many of these prophets to warn of his coming judgment, the due penalty for the unfaithfulness of the people of Israel. However, here the Lord declares that he will restore them. He says that they have been plundered and ruined by other nations, and thus he will restore them. This does not in any way take away from his judgment, though. He is still a perfectly just God who will judge his people and punish them for the sin they have done against him. And so this is very encouraging to know that yes, the Lord is going to unleash his wrath. Israel drifted away from him and he allowed other nations and peoples to attack, to plunder, for the Babylonians and Assyrians, even take control of the people. Yet he will restore his chosen people!

  16. Josh Larson says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard. (ESV)

    that is a scary verse. to have the lord saying i am against you. it would be one thing for a person to say that to you because they can only kill your body. God can kill your body and soul which means you will perish in hell forever. that is really intense to think about because forever is a long time. humans cant even grasp the meaning of forever. i need to work on living 100% out for God. letting my self go and serving him for all of my life on this earth as a slave.

  17. Lauren Goudge from San Clemente says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Wow another scary verse! It would be such a horrible thing to know that God is against you and his wrath will be shown on you over and over and you can’t do anything about it. I am so happy that I am confident about where I am going when I die and like Pastor Bobby said this weekend, we will find assurance in our sanctification. The more I live for Christ the more I can see that I know for a fact I am going to heaven! I am sooo excited for that day!! This verse also made me realize how sad it is that some people choose to disobey God’s word even though they’ve hear about it. They think hell is going to be good. I am in a situation like this and all I want is for them to see the truth! I just need to keep trying to tell them the good news. Praying that God will give me the right words to say and that this person’s heart will be broken down.
    MARANATHA!!!

    this is a great verse because when we sin,we are turning away from God. Yet he will restore his chosen people!

  19. Beth Lauder says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    What a dramatic turnaround for the Ninevites. For years they were the ones plundering, killing, and capturing without mercy and now the tables have turned and they are the ones being attacked. It got me thinking how powerful people or countries on earth seem unable to be destroyed, but Nahum shows that even the mightiest of nations can not stand against the Lord. I am so grateful that I am on God’s team and that I will not have to face total destruction on Judgement Day. I know that eternal destruction and hell awaits for all my non-Christian friends and family so it motivates me to share the gospel with them so they can know the Truth that will save them.

  20. Mady Adler says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    This verse is really scary!! Nineveh, like a lot of people today, underestimated God’s power. They thought they could do whatever they wanted and that there would be no punishment. Clearly, they forget that God is a just God and cannot let sin go unpunished!!! People now-a-days try to ignore the fact that there is a Creator and that there is a God who has authority over them. They push it aside so that they feel somewhat justified to do whatever they want to do and live their lives the way they please. But like what happened to Nineveh, these people are going to have to face God’s wrath one day for all of the things they did unless they repent of their sins and turn to Christ! I praise God that he called me to repentance and that he had mercy on me. However, this verse makes me scared for my friends that have not repented and put their faith in Christ!! Like Pastor Bobby said in his sermon, it is evil of me to not tell them about the Gospel! If I dont tell them the truth of Jesus Christ, Im basically saying I want them to burn in hell. I need to get over being afraid of telling people and starting being more concerned for their souls!!

    • Hunter Adamske says:

      Your comment got me thinking how I should be more compassionate toward non-Christians…they need to be saved!

    • Robin O says:

      Awesome comment Mady! I think I need to think about that more as I grow closer to people who may not know the Lord, and even people who do, I think that they need to be reminded that God cares what they do and don’t do. I’ll be praying for you (:

  21. Megan Okada 2012 from Christian/Private says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Well, although that verse is absolutely terrifying to anyone who doesn’t know the gospel, and it should be…I think its a really important verse for me to read right now. After coming back from REVIVAL X, and hearing Pastor Lucas’ sermon last week at camp, its really great to keep reading verses that remind me of the gift I have in life! Because I’m saved by Him, because I put my trust in Him, I don’t have to endure the burning of chariots and losing everything I have. Instead of having God forcibly take away my possessions, I’m choosing to give them up. One by one, I’m working towards having absolutely NOTHING on my shelf. Reading verses like this one is a great reminder that with every thing I release from my shelf, I am that much closer to living FULLY for Him, and not having to endure the loss of anything that I possess like the Ninevites did. Christ Jesus gave me a gift in eternal life with Him. I need to clear my shelf, because the gift box doesn’t fit with everything else on my shelf. So I’m clearing off the shelf & cleaning it up, so I can place the gift of my dreams on it.

    • Stacy PerkPerk says:

      Beautiful metaphor, Megan.

      • Megan Okada 2012 from Christian/Private says:

        Thanks Stacy, I’m trying my best to make that shelf spotless.

        • Stacy PerkPerk says:

          Maybe this will help: you are the glove, and God is the hand. When He comes to live inside believers, upon sealing us to Himself, He puts us on. Apart from Him, we are unable to accomplish or do anything. But when the Hand puts us on, we do everything that the Hand does. HE makes it happen, NOT US. It’s a weird truth, the concept of us dying to ourselves and Him living within us. Pray for Him to ease you with this. There is tremendous peace and joy that comes.

  23. Morgannnnnn C. (: says:

    I like when Holden said up therre^^
    How its true God isn’t afriad to punish us for

    For all our sins we just have to TRULY REPENT
    .
    And just think about what Jesus did for us.

  24. Bobbie Gene Litz says:

    Nahum 2:13 “Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.”
    This verse show that God is just. He will punish us for our sins and not just let us off the hook. He punishes everyone but still loves us. It says behold i am against you, which is a ascary thing. a lot of people commented on this verse and all have agreed that it is scary to have God against you! But here when He gets angry at us and punishes us, we have to remember that it is righteous anger because we are sinning against Him.

  25. Taylin Reinholtz says:

    Nahum 2:8~ Nineveh is like a pool whose waters run away. “Halt! Halt!” they cry, but none turns back.

    So I might be interpreting this verse wrong, but this is how I took it when I read it this morning. All I could picture was the wrath of God coming down on Nineveh. Everything was in just absolute chaos and people were running away because they were so frightened. Also, I think that the “halt! halt!” part is about how they are trying to get people to stand and fight against God, but everyone is so afraid and know that they cannot win (that is just my idea of what it means. If someone knows differently, please let me know!).
    I really learned more about who God is in Nahum chapters one and two. This showed me how he makes the injust just and takes vengence on the people who disobey him. I definately do NOT want that anger and vengence to be taken on me. Good thing I know where I am going! (:
    Have a great Monday!!

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This verse shows Christ’s love for us. It shows that Christ is good and just and is a God who hates sin. We have to let the Lord be in complete charge over our lives and we have to resist Satin and sin. We have to fear the Lord so we can honor Him on a daily basis and live our lives to glorify Him.

  27. Dan Lauder says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    God used the Assyrians to punish Israel for there sin and rebellion against Him. The purpose of this was to lead Israel to repent and turn back to Him. Though the Assyrians are still very much in power, this prophecy says that God will once again restore them. How good it is to know that God disciplines those he loves and chastises every son whom he receives (Heb 12:6). “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasent, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Heb 12:11). I know that God can and will use painful circumstances in my life to lead me to Him and to train me in righteousness.

  28. summer thomas says:

    Our God is loveing but also just, if you keep on deliberatly keep on sinning you wont be going to heaven. You need to repent of your sins and give your life to God!…you wouldn’t let a murderer get away with no punishment, so why let a sin get away with sinning?…Jesus died on the cross and rose again for our sins!… for this we need to repent and give all praise and glory to God each and everyday. we must put all of our faith to Jesus christ and trust in him at all times, for without him we would be lost.

  29. Pastor Ben says:

    The Ninevites thought they were alright. They found safety in their big city. They sought riches.

    They were foolish and ended up being disappointed in the end.

    Reading this reminded me again of 1 John 2:15-17, where it says to not love the things of the world because they are passing away. Sadly, this is the plight of many high schoolers in the OC. They are secure in their riches and seeking the things of the world, but one day they will face judgment! I am so thankful that God rescued students at Revival X! Pray with me that more will be saved this next school year through the ministry of True North and its students!

    God is very angry in this book. He is mad at the people of Nineveh for their sins. In this verse he explains what he will do to the people of Nineveh. THis is similar to the day he returns. It also reminds me of what will happen when those enter into Hell for eternity. Their will be burning of fire, similar to the burning of the chariots. There will be gnashing of teeth, similar to devouring young lions. When it says he will cut off your prey, it reminded me of Hell when people will be alone and cut off from everyone!! Hell will not be a pretty place, its time to tell others!

    • Elizabeth says:

      Great comment Allie! Great seeing you this weekend :D

    • Allen 2011 from San Clemente says:

      This is true, God is basically using Nineveh as a small example of what the world will face when Christ comes for the second time. In this passage He has not even come the first time yet. It’s so amazing how God can work in a prophesy anywhere He wants to. God is amazing!!!

  31. Katie Slusher from Christian/Private says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    It is interesting to see the change of circumstances for the Ninevites. The fierce warriors, who were once mighty conquerers, are now laid to desolation. The Ninevites, were greatly feared by the Israelites at one time and are brought to ruin. It’s interesting how God changes the circumstances. It shows me that I can’t place my trust on anything other than God. My circumstances may change, but God is always faithful. He is the one who deserves my complete trust.

    Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” I want my actions to always show a complete trust in Him. May I never let my attitude be affected by changing circumstances, but always cling to the faithfulness of the Lord.

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!

    This chapter is so intense, again we see the consequences of a nation turning their back against God this time it was Ninevah. God is saying that he is going to return with an army to destroy the nation and empty them of everything, In the past God had compassion on them, but after many years they forgot him and turned to idols. And there punishment and destruction was waiting.
    Ninevah had forgotten God. We serve a God who never forgets. For those who do not have Christ covering their sin, there punishment is great, but even though Gods punishment in this chapter is severe it will not begin to compare with the punishment and wrath that is awating those who do not repent and turn to Christ. As we learned at revival there punishemnt is hell.
    This really made me think of all the chapters I have read on Gods wrath in the minor prophets and how terrible that is. But none of them comes close to the final punishment which is eternal damination in hell. How much eager does that make me to be preaching the gospel when ever and where ever I am. I praise the Lord that day after day he gives us opportuniites to do so and I pray that I will seize those opportunities and not be hesitant but be bold to make known the mystery of the gospel. There are so many people out there that think they know the truth. I pray Lord that you will use me to speak to those people. People raised in the church who have a common knowledge of who the Lord is but have never repentned and transfered their trust from themselves to Christ. Oh how glorious it would be if all of us who have heard the truth at revival would be empowered by your spirit to share that truth with all people mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, and many more. Luke 14:26

  33. Madison Montero says:

    6 The river gates are opened;
    the palace melts away;

    This verse reminds me of Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. We all need to be determined to find God’s narrow gate and stay on the path that He is guiding us down.

  34. Jake Young says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.
    I like this verse because it shows how if you have faith in God, He will bless you through all the tough times. God has never-ending love for every man on earth. In this case, Israel has been plundered but God was rebuilding it

    4 The chariots race madly through the streets;
    they rush to and fro through the squares;
    they gleam like torches;
    they dart like lightning.

    This verse sounds a lot like the walking dead in the chariot race at revival X

  35. JT Young says:

    This chapter and all the commenting really encouraged me. We need to have true repentance like Taylin and Holden said way up top. We can’t just keep sinning with the mindset that God forgives everything. He wants us to completely turn 180 degrees from sin.

    This also reminds me of when (I believe it was) Pastor Mike who said we should not be surprised when we die. The last thing on the Ninevites’ minds was how they are going to face the Wrath of God. Same goes for us. It doesn’t matter if you are a “good person” or that you “know there is a God”. Without true repentance and faith you will face the wrath of God. Please, do not be surprised when you die. Know where you are going it feels so great to have God ‘s grace. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!

    MARANATHA!

  36. Andie Dill says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    this verse shows the wrath God can put on the people. its a great verse that shows that just as quickly as God gives you everything u have… he can take it away just as fast!!! without God we are alone and helpless which is a scary place to be

    • Stacy PerkPerk says:

      Andie, it was a blessing evangelizing with you Saturday night. Thanks for coming out and sharing Christ with teenagers who had NO CLUE about the truth of our Savior. Isn’t it crazy how O.C. IS FILLED WITH LOST SOULS?!?!?! We need to share His truth with people!

  37. Max says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    This is a really powerful verse, because it’s describing how powerful God is. God caused desolation and ruin to come to Nineveh, and He can do it again whenever He wants to. God makes hearts of stone melt to a heart of flesh. One day every knee will bow to Him and everyone will acknowledge Him as Lord. Everyone feels guilt and shame because we all have sinned, but only because of His amazing grace are we able to be saved! And i’m sure that when we do see Him, we will be so shocked by His perfectness that we’ll fall on our faces like John did! God is all powerful, loving, merciful, and gives grace when we DON’T deserve it. He deserves all power, glory, and praise forever!

  38. Jenae Naee 2011!! ((: says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    God has so much power and i would never want to be on his bad side. He has the power to create and destroy, and his wrath is coming and im so glad that i will be in Heaven with him and not have to endure that!!

  39. trevor hosford says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    it does not matter if you are the strongest army in the world, God can have someone come and defeat you just like that. we need to keep that in mind all the time

    c u all later :)

  40. Wesley says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God is merciful, and his mercy is displayed in numerous places of the Bible. One example is through Jesus Christ. Another is through saving Nineveh about a century ago when they have repented (Jonah).

    Nineveh has rejected the gift of God’s mercy that God has so kindly offered through Jonah. Thus, God must punish Nineveh for their sins and crimes.

    If you reject God’s mercy, then expect his justice and judgment.

  41. Blake Thompson says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    This sounds like what is going to happen to all the non-Christians when Jesus returns. Their “hearts melt” because they may have been told about Jesus but chose to reject him and therefore their “knees tremble.” The people’s faces turn pale from all of the things happen before their eyes, and they can hardly believe it.

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    This verse shows how we can find grace and avoid what should happen to us as verse 10 illustrates.

    • Jackson Dahl says:

      Very true Blake! Because of that, we need to be telling as many people as we possibly can about God’s truth!

  42. Elizabeth says:

    Oh my goodness! Look how many comments we have already! And it’s only 11! Let’s keep the revival going and increasing!

    This chapter! Woo! That’s a lot to take in. It makes me realize how unworthy I am of heaven! While it’s scary to think that I deserve this, it’s true. Although it won’t make any difference because the grace God has given us and Jesus dying for us is all it takes to bring me to heaven, I need to show Him (and others) that He is my Lord! And if He is my Lord, I will be living for Him. I like these chapters that talk about the distruction because they scare me and encourage me to live more for Christ.

    5 He remembers his officers; they stumble as they go…
    I like this part of verse 5. We are His officers. He will remember us! We need to not be scared to do what He wants us to do because what He wants us to do is right, and when we do what He wants us to do, we will be rewarded!

    12 The lion tore enough for his cubs and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his caves with prey and his dens with torn flesh.

    Wowza! Talk about God being the lion! I want to be His cubs, not the prey.

  43. Josh Foreman says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    If this doesn’t sound terrible, I don’t know what is. The precious things of verse 9 seem nice until the love of them results in desolation. It reminds me of having one day in His courts instead of a thousand elsewhere. Just one moment of heaven will be better than our entire life on earth! Seeking things in this life instead of storing up treasures in heaven is like if someone came up to you and offered either $1 in monopoly money right now or $100 in actual money if you come back 30 minutes later. It seems so foolish to take the single monopoly dollar. In the end, it’s not actually worth anything. The 30 minutes you could have waited is almost nothing in the long run. It may be hard to be young and understand this, but our lives are more or less the blinking of an eye (just like those short 30 minutes) and everything we’ve stored up here will vanish in value just like the monopoly dollar. Let’s put our treasures on the path that doesn’t result in desolation.

    • Allen 2011 from San Clemente says:

      Great comment. Our lives our nothing in this world compared to eternity. How we live down here on earth determines where we go for eternity. It is SOOO worth giving up partying like the world for maybe 80 years so that we can worship God in peace and joy for all of eternity!! Good to see you on SOTD. Keep it up!!

  44. Makenna from San Clemente says:

    7 its mistress is stripped; she is carried off,
    her slave girls lamenting,
    moaning like doves
    and beating their breasts.

    Is this our reaction when someone rejects Jesus? It should! I need to have an ear out for Him, because I wouldn’t really be a good daughter if I let my Lord get carried off like that. I truly need to stand up for Him, for He says do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and if we reject Him, He will reject us in front of the father.

  45. Allen 2011 from San Clemente says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    The day of the Lord is coming soon. This verse may be talking about Isreal itself being destroyed but to me it also can refer to the day the Lord returns to wipe the world clean of every living creature. Christ will return with an army far more superior than any army known to man. Not only will His army be powerful, but not a one may be pierced for it consists of those who are already up in heaven with Him. Christ will destroy the nations and they will cry out for mercy but it will be too late. In one way I do not want to see that day and see the pain in those that are against him for some may be people I know, but in another way I hope to be riding behind Jesus as he destroys those who would oppose Him.

  46. Melissa Cox says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    The beauty of being God’s chosen ones…God always defends His own and rights every wrong done against them. I am so thankful to be one of God’s chosen ones today–a child of God, saved by Christ and His work on the cross. Like Israel, there was a time when I was an enemy of God…when despite God’s provision and access to His word, I was living for myself. Like the remnant in Israel who repented and returned to the one true God, I heard the gospel, repented of my sin-filled life and turned to Christ for salvation. I now belong to Him and look forward to the day when every wrong will be made right and God’s children will see Him face to face. I am thankful to serve a God who “restores the majesty” of His people for His own glory…not because we deserve it.

  47. Peggy Palsgaard says:

    8 Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.
    “Halt! Halt!” they cry,
    but none turns back.

    We as humans have NO power when it compares to God. The Ninevites were a pretty powerful country, but nothing they had compared to God’s power and wrath. That’s a pretty scary thing. Turning that around, however, no one can compare to God’s love and grace. And we need to be telling people about that because otherwise they will have to suffer through God’s power and wrath, rather than experiencing His love and grace. This also reminded me of Pastor Mike’s message, how God gets ALL the glory in our lives, we did nothing to deserve God’s grace, so we can take none of the credit. Everything that has happened in our lives, God did.

  48. Kylie Waskowski says:

    9 Plunder the silver, plunder the gold!
    There is no end of the treasure or of the wealth of all precious things.

    This verse stood out to me because it shows how on earth we think all the materialistic things are important and we think we need them through out our day. Truth is, all these things are perishable. These worldly things just stand in the way of our relationship with God and mostly distract us from reading His word or even thinking about Him. We need to be wrapping our lives around God and having Him be 100 percent of out lives.
    Also storing up treasures on earth is sooo pointless, non of it will go to heaven with you. Instead of being surrounded by all this worthless stuff, we should be surrounded by God and His word and growing closer to Him. Just think about how much time you are spending on facebook and compare it to the time you spend thinking about God. I know I am defiantly not spending enough time with God. I need and will change that. He is our Savior He deserves all of our time !

    • John Karlsson says:

      Good to see you on SOTD Kylie!!

    • shossa raulston says:

      Such a great comment Kylie! Your point about how much time we spend on facebook compared to thinking about God really made me feel convicted! I could be bettering my relationship with God instead of wasting my time on worldly things!

    • Summer Staeb says:

      YES! Kylie, I’m so excited to see you on SOTD! Awesome comment, we definitely need to make sure we are fixing our hearts on Jesus rather than the worthless things of this world!

    • Alicia Karlsson RADICALLY REVIVED BY A RIGHTEOUS GOD! says:

      Great insight girl, awesome to see you on here. I will be praying that you will say no to the temptations in this world and desire God more and more. :)

  49. Stacy PerkPerk says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    May God compel us to share His truth with everyone He entrusts to us and crosses our path with. May we bring the opportunity to ALL PEOPLE, with hopes their heart will melt NOW, before it too late, and desolation and ruin take over.

    Last night I was doing an intimate menotring study with a couple of non-believers. For the past several weeks my friend and I have been doing this with this couple, they have spoken like they were believers, though their fruits were inconsistent with their words. Last night, they admitted that they finally see, based on seeing God’s Word and realizing Who He is, they are NOT believers. They acknowledged their sin. And the anguish we saw them in, though heart-breaking, was incredibly encouraging. Talk about their faces growing pale and them having anguish in their loins. We could see the anguish and desolation growing throughout the night. And yet STILL not to the point they are ready to say goodbye to their life of sin. SOON, THOUGH, Lord willing. I can TASTE it. I am on bated breath, BEGGING Him for their souls to be reconciled unto Him.

    The anguish in the loins of all those who don’t believe in our Savior and in our God will be irrevocable should they continue in their sins until they die here on earth, or until He comes back. He does exercise incredible patience, but the wrath He is storing up is going to annihilate. Don’t we ALL have SO MANY people we need to share Him with, before it’s too late and they are mauled for lion feed? God, give us boldness and passion for You…and for the lost ones You bring our way.

  50. Katie Knudsen says:

    “3 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.”

    This is the last thing i want to be hearing from God. “I am against you declares the Lord”. Whoa thats a scary thought because if we think about it before we were Christians God pretty much was not for us because we were for the devil. I don’t know what you think of that but I find that INTENSE. I’m so happy to know God is officially on my team now. My prayer is that he’s on your team too!

    Until God restores us, we are spiritually dead. We need the supernatural work of God to make us alive. Meaning Born again. The fact of the matter is God chooses us. We don’t choose whether we have the gift of salvation, God does.

    Yesterday I was talking to an old friend and they were telling me how they are always depressed and don’t care if they were to die. It made me really sad and broke my heart to hear that and I asked “how do you know where your going?” They responded with “I’m a good person, my mother always says I’ve been almost a perfect kid my whole life. I know I’m going to heaven”. I said “Being good can’t get you into the kingdom of God, you are saved by grace not by works. You need to repent of your sin, turn your life around and put your faith in God. In that you will find everlasting Joy. You will have a reason to be here.”
    Immediately he said “No I don’t want to talk about it, I’m scared to die”.

    After they hung up I thought to myself what a scary thought to be unsure where your going. I prayed very hard to God to take the veil of deceit away from his eyes and let him see the truth. This wasn’t the first time I mentioned to Gospel either to him. People either take it or not. Please pray for his salvation with me.

    Maranatha.

  51. Connor Tobiaaa says:

    Wow!! This chapter is really action packed and exciting. I love how God can conquer all His enemies at will. What an amazing God we have, and powerful. Can’t wait to read on!

  52. Sam G says:

    8 Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.

    What a beautiful line. All the things hiding Nineveh will slip away leaving the bones of the city, the structure, and God will destroy it. He will strip it down to its core and devastate the city. He will take away all that the people have, the ultimate lesson in humility.

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard. (ESV)

    Eeeek. Yeesh, that’s a scary statement if I ever saw one; to have a holy and sovereign God declare His wrath against you. Thank God for His grace and mercy!!!!

  53. Zach Reidinger says:

    Wow this has been such a long time since i have been on here and it really does feel great again, im happy that im finally goin to start this up again:) Still did have ttrouble understanding it but i really needed to be in gods word after last night!!!! Hope everyone has a great day

  54. Hunter Adamske says:

    The LORD’s vengeance is complete against Nineveh. Just like Nineveh was completely destroyed; this world will completely be destroyed because of it’s sin. It has had plenty of “Jonahs” come and go preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ so that people could repent. Some do repent and are saved, but sadly we know that the world will keep sinning. Everything good that God has given the world, He will take away, just like Nineveh’s wealth plundered by the Babylonians. I want to cling to God my faithful heavenly Father instead of this world that will so easily and quickly slip away. Heaven is what is worth living for not the worthless things of this world! Mt. 6:19-21

  55. Bryan Sonksen says:

    I read…

    God is evidently angry at how the people of Ninevah are abusing Him and are disobeying Him. Even though this might be an intense chapter of prophecy of judgment to come, the Ninevites got this message from Nahum before it was too late and they had the ability to repent. Even when God seems like He is not a God of love, we have to dig a little deeper and realize how many warnings He has given. Let us be His messenger as Nahum was!

  56. Jackson Dahl says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Like God is going to do here to the Ninevites, he will also absolutely destroy and punish the people who haven’t been saved. It is a horribly sad thing to think about, but it also makes me realize how truly blessed I am that he would choose me to be on his team, despite the fact that there was nothing I did to deserve that choice! Our God is so merciful and Loving that he saves us for no reason at all other than the fact that he wants to. We are nothing, and deserve nothing, but we have a truly awesome God!

    Despite the joy that that thought brings, it is also very important to remember that tons of people aren’t saved and will be headed to that destruction, so we need to out telling every single person we can about the Gospel! He will do the work in their hearts, but we can still be telling them any chance we get! This really encourages me to evangelize much more than I do and really use every opportunity I have to serve the Lord through evangelism!

  57. shossa raulston says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Wow! This sure gives me something to think about! Are the things in my life giving God cause to tell me “I am against you”? This is most definetly not the place I want to be, so like Kylie said, instead of wasting my time on facebook, I should be getting into God’s word and learning about Him and the commandments He gives me!

    This also makes me think about my non-christian friends. If the Lord is against them, and I am standing by and watching them suffer down the road to hell, then what does that say about me? Not good things! I need to make sure that everyone I know has heard the truth from me!

  58. Regan Anderson says:

    WOW God is powerful! if anyone ever said he isnt this chapter easily proves them wrong! In this chapter God expresses his displeasure with Nivevah and through his love for them shows what they are doing wrong through his power! God is GREAT and MIGHTY! :) he is to be feared

  59. Never Take David Personal 2011 says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    So the table has been turned on the Assyrians. They thought that they were safe and powerful, but who can stand against the mighty hand of the Lord? No one! To have God be against you, would be terrible. The truth is though, that at one point God was against all of us, before he did a work of salvation in us. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God! It is great to know that I serve a powerful God, and also great to know that by his grace he is not against me.

  60. Jen Aufill says:

    Nahum 2:13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Looking at the big picture, the theme of the entire book of Nahum is that Nineveh would be destroyed. Nineveh was the arrogant capitol of the Assyrian Empire, and was due judgement and punishment. The book of Nahum is like a sequel to the book of Jonah. Once Jonah had delivered his message to the Ninevites, they repented of their sins and were spared God’s judgement. However, this repentance did not last the test of time. Once again, the people have fallen into sin are also, once again, going to be judged by God because of these sins. The Lord is against them and their wicked ways, because he is a holy and perfect God. Nahum is mostly a book made entirely of oracles of God’s judgement. In this particular passage, the Lord describes his judgement. Because it is HIS will for them to fall, it will be so because He is the God and creator of all things. The Lord of all the universe is against this people all because of their sin.

    Its important that we realize how horrible our sin really is. In this passage, it describes how God was AGAINST them because of their sinful and wicked ways. I cannot imagine how horrible it would be to have your creator be purposely against you. But this thing happens every day! If we sin, just even once, (and i know we sin a lot more than that) our God is against us because we are not fit or worthy to be in his presence, or even be on his “team.” The Ninevites were separated from God because of their sin, and if they were not “for” him, then they must be “against” him. This is how it works still today. There is no lukewarm! like it says in Revelation 3:15-16, you are either on God’s team, or not. This is where a lot of so-called-”christians” fall short. You cannot be inbetween or hot somedays and cold others. As Christians, we need to make sure that everyone we know who claims to be a Christian knows that they cannot stand on middle ground, because it is nonexistent in the eyes of God.

  61. Vanessa Bowden had so much fun with the drama team at camp compass today! says:

    i read…
    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    this is what it will be like on Judgement day. when Jesus comes back. we want to be on God’s team so that we wont be left behind and go through these bad things.

  62. LG says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God takes sin seriously. We are going to be punished for every sin we have done and will do. Reading through the Old Testament has taught me that God is a Judge. He is going to judge the World.

  63. Elise says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    So excited for this day! I love how at first we are talking about just the city of Nineveh, and then God switches to the entire nation. The Lord is going to restore the earth because we have ruined it. Not only that, but he is going to let those who ruined it be saved and get to enjoy the new earth. That’s so amazing to think about how God picked me out of everyone else, me: a sinner who was sprinting towards hell! I should be thanking God everyday for this choice, and continually reminding myself that I did nothing to help God’s decision to save me. I was not more skilled, more righteous, more humble, or more lovable than the next person. God chose me purely out of His grace. I can’t wait to be with Him, and I can’t wait to share what God has done with this life with others!

  64. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This chapter is intense! Every person on Earth is so sinful! This verse really shows how much God hates sin! Just the descriptions are so intense, and really gets the point across. This verse makes me take God seriously! I am soo glad to have a God to fear, but also a God who saved me from His wrath by sending HIs son to die for me, and endure that wrath!

  65. Jacob Upton HE>i says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    WOW! To have the Lord against you, with all of His righteous anger as we read about yesterday in Nahum 1, would be such a scary thing! This whole chapter tells about the wrath of God coming down on all of Nineveh, and i am so grateful that He has shown mercy to me and my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, because without His mercy we would all be facing His wrath.

  66. Summer Staeb says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    Wow, Ninevah had completely turned their backs on God and now God was going to utterly destroy them because He cannot be in the presence of sin. It’s been so awesome reading through the minor prophets and seeing that God is so powerful and can do whatever He pleases. He could snuff me out or completely destroy me at any instance. When I read about these instances of God’s wrath coming down against these people, it definitely instills fear of God in me. Too many people today think of the “fear of God” as a reverence or an awe for Him, but in reality, we should be afraid of what God could do to us because of our sin! And that should spur us on to fight against that sin! I don’t want God to “be against me,” as it says He was towards Ninevah in verse thirteen of this chapter! I’m praying that ever morning I would start my day off right and battle the sin that God hates!

  67. Dominic Scarmardo from Aliso/Dana says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    When God judges people for their sin, there will not be any happiness-only fear and pain and sorrow. I’m sure that the people who are masochists or sadists believe that since they enjoy pain, it will be a great time. Others believe that they can escape this punishment by fleeing or hiding or fighting God. But these ideas are ridiculous. God has all the power in the universe, and He will inflict everyone who didn’t follow Him with eternal pain. This is not because He is a God full of hatred, but because He is Just and needs to punish sin.

  68. David Studebaker says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard. (ESV)

    When and if people fight against god they will lose and burn in hell for all eternity. So those who have God in your heart dont fight just turn away from the evil.

  69. Christina Ashby says:

    Nice comment Kylie! It’s so true how people get so caught up in their lives here on earth when soon none of it will matter. Most people think its all great stuff when really it will all rust and decay, like Bobby said one night at revival, we need to be living for the next life.

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    I think this verse just shows us again how God is just and not all loving and we deserve every piece of God’s wrath but thankfully through Jesus Christ we wont have to experience that. Also this shows us how powerful God truly is and it definitely reminds me how we need to fear God and not man.

  70. Lexi Leon says:

    Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Like many other people have said, this verse is pretty intense! It declares God’s incredible power and just goes to show that sin will not go unpunished. If God allowed sin to go unnoticed and unpunished that would make Him an unjust God. Praise God for His amazing power and greatness. THis chapter should just reinforce everyone’s fear of God’s power, because as we can see He can do a lot of damage to those who do not accept Him, but at the same time He can do a lot of good to those who do! :) MARANATHA!!!!

  71. christopheriksen says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    I liked how it said that like lions Nineveh built up all this torn flesh and meat for themselves, symbolizing their wealth and power, at the expense of others (their prey). But then God says that He is going to destroy the young lions so that they will never be able to experience it. Like Pastor Ben said, this message is very similar to how we should not store up treasures on earth or find security in them because they will pass away. And if we are finding security in them instead of God we will be destroyed as well. LORD please help me never again to spend a day simply seeking myself or worldly passions; please help me instead to every day look to obey you in everything because you are so much better.

  72. Lexi Leon says:

    Also great comment Summer! That’s really inspiring!

  73. Destyni says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    The Lord made and created everything, but the people of this world decided to turn to worldly things and false gods rather than our one and only true God! People like this will get punished for what they have done and God’s judgment will come upon them. That is a very scary thought but this verse also shows how powerful God is! Even though He is a loving God, He is also a God that will judge. God is the only one who deserves our praise and we need to fear Him! Thank You Lord for Your salvation!

  74. Miranda Burke says:

    4 The chariots race madly through the streets; they rush to and fro through the squares; they gleam like torches; they dart like lightning.

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin! Hearts melt and knees tremble; anguish is in all loins; all faces grow pale!

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God’s wrath is a scary thing. Most of the world doesnt really always realize the immensity of God’s wrath. People always seem to view God as “ohh Jesus loves everyone”. This is wrong. Of course God is loving (one of his many great attributes), but he is also powerful and just and deserves to be feared. Its also scary to think about those who are one day going to have to face an eternity of his wrath, Hell. Like Mady said, I need to get out there more and spread the gospel and not keep it back from the people who need it. It would be so selfish to keep something that important back over how someone would look at you. It would be like having the cure for cancer and not giving it to anyone because you didnt feel up to making an effort. I need to get better about that.

    Praying for the Revival of the school year!

  75. Bobby Blakey says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    What a fearful thing to have God against you! That is why it is so important that we fear God. This is the beginning of wisdom. It leads to us turning from our sin and keeping his commands.

    Yet, sadly we are sometimes more afraid of having people against us. You can see this in the Bible all of the time, especially in the OT. Nations are more afraid of other nations like Assyria where Nineveh is, rather than fearing the Lord. But it is clear from Nahum that God can pown whatever nation he wants.

    I pray for all of us at True North that we will not fear men. But instead we will be bold witnesses for Jesus Christ because we fear God and the eternal destruction he can send us to. Matthew 10:28. I am praying that this is just the beginning of the revival this year and that the high school campuses of the OC won’t know what hit them next year as they experience God on campus!

  76. Callie R. says:

    8 Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.
    “Halt! Halt!” they cry,

    I interpreted this verse similar to Taylin. When I think of a pool, I think of a body of smooth, clear, still water. Ninevah had been, to the Ninevites, a perfect city without waves or storms. But if you’ve ever seen a kiddie pool’s wall break down, you know that there is NO possible way to get the water back into that pool. The water floods out of the pool, and nothing can stop it. The Ninivites were so terrified, no matter how much people called and tried to stop them, they were impossible to stop.

    This verse reminded me how powerful our God is. He can easily petrify the heart of the bravest man. As Proverbs says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” We SHOULD fear God. What you fear is what you will worship. It will consume your thoughts. We need to fear God so that HE will consume our thoughts.

  77. Nicholas Bonetto says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God is just, and His wrath is extremely scary. People will wish they were dead. It is a scary thing to be against God, yet Satan sugar-coats God’s wrath and makes it look like a party in Hell (which it absolutely is not!). So many people don’t fear God or Hell, but instead they fear people. I’m so thankful that I don’t have to endure the wrath of God for eternity, lets go start a Revival in the OC Highschools so many others will be saved as well.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  78. Jasmine Wonton says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    These are the most feared words( “I am against you.”) that anyone could ever receive from the Lord. After repenting of their sins at Jonah’s preaching, they returned back to a sinful lifestyle.:( My study Bible says that their walls were 100 ft high and moat 150 ft wide and 60 ft deep which made Ninevah proud of her invulnerable city. Although God is a redeeming and loving God, He is also a just God and He has to punish them for their sins. I pray that the Revival will still continue!

  79. Mike says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts….

    These would be the worst words to hear. Knowing that the almighty Creator of all things who has the power to obliterate entire nations is against me would definitely make me want to repent. But too many people today do not realize that God is against them because of their sin. They choose to believe that it’s no big deal, and even if they believe in God they act as if their actions do not anger Him. But we as Christians know the truth. Jesus is coming back soon, and His coming will be one of wrath and judgment, not of “love” and compassion. Like Pastor Bobby said this weekend, loving others will not mean shutting up and letting them go to Hell, but instead doing everything I can to preach them the gospel and praying that God will redeem their hearts!

  80. brian larsen says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God is a just God and punishes sinners for their wrongdoing against Him. God is so powerful that there is nothing we can do to protect ourselves from His wrath except for repenting and trusting that what Jesus has done will save us. We need to do our best to obey all of God’s commands so He wont have to punish us. Another thing i got out of this verse is that we need to be humble and submit to God. We should never ever think highly of ourselves because God is the one who blessed us with everything. He created us and gave us everything so He could also destroy us and take everything away from us. So instead of boasting and showing off everything good about us, we should be humble and thank God for our blessings.

  81. Annie says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!
    This whole chapter is a great example of why we all need to fear God, especially as in verse 10 says that all who merely saw the destruction were terrified. This is a very small and worldly perspective of what God’s wrath will be when we are judged for some people, and they think that they can hide from it. I have some friends that view God as only their friend instead of the Almighty and Just Lord, and I am praying for their realization of the truth as I share it with them.

  82. Nacho 2011 says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This verse really shows me the wrath of God against his enemies. Growing up in sunday school and stuff, we are always learning about how God loves us all so much. While this is absolutely true, God is not the typical fluffy, pushover teddybear that we sometimes picture Him to be. He is a just God who rules with wrath and power. Lets just make sure we are on His side when He unleases this wrath.

  83. Ryan Cox says:

    Wow! my first response to this entire (brutal) chapter was, “Gee, glad I’m not Ninevah/Assyria!” Then I realized that I AM Ninevah/Assyria…insomuch as I deserve the utter destruction described for Assyria because of my sin. When I became saved, I then was seen as Israel being restored. God’s economy for destruction & salvation is sometimes so mysterious in the Bible. His overall salvific vehicle seems to fit an “underdog” motif, for he loves to choose the least likely to succeed to do his most dramatic jobs. I’ll praise God that I’m no longer labeled as a receptacle for his wrath, but one who would be least likely chosen by the captain/God of a “team.”

  84. Zach from Aliso/Dana says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    The Lord is a loving God but he knows how to show his wrath. Israel is a sign of Gods grace. Some of us may think that we arent like these cities but what is inside your heart? Because a lot of these people are just like us. We are sinners at heart and we need to hold back that urge to sin. This reminds me of 1john 5: 3-8

  85. Julie Logan says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    When the Lord is against someone, He is serious. In this verse He is going to far lengths to punish Nineveh for turning back to their evil ways. I never want the Lord to be against me for returning to my evil ways. I want to make sure that I am keeping the Revival going now that we are back. One of the ways I am going to practically do that is by going over the notes I took from this past week and weekend and make sure that I am not just being a hearer of the Word, but also being a doer!

  86. elizabetholt revived by the Lord!! :D says:

    I loved verses 10 and 13!!

    This chapter was really intense and like so many people have said before me, I am so grateful God chose me on His team. Sadly the ninevites rejected their chance at Gods graces 100 years after the first generation rceived that grace. God is just and they blew their chance soooo they got to experience Gods wrath. It was scary but awesome to see ho trhis great nation was humbled so thouroughly and just how so in control God was and how quicky he did it all. He’s so powerful it’s amazing! Praise the Lord Im on His team! MARANATHA!!!!

  87. Maddie Nadeau from Aliso/Dana says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This is crazy. I can’t stop being surprized by how powerful our almighty God is, he can snuff us out like a candle and yet He still gives us warnings of His punishment and tells us of Hid justness!!! It is scary to read how the allpowerful God of the universe is against what we do daily on earth and it is a wonderful thing to know that He has saved us from this punishment that we deserved in full!! MARANATHA LORD!!! i know because your son died for me i will be with you in heaven when you come for me :)

  88. Emily Knudsen says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    So many people here on earth think that they can get away with anything. That and in Ninevehs case is false. Like God did to Nineveh, He paid them back for their dept, and like the people here on this earth God will do the same to them. Its so important to take sin seriously, and really evalulate your life according to Gods word and what He says about something you may struggle with. I know that when I sin its a constant struggle to stop it completely. Now I know were all sinners and cant help that, but what we can help (with Gods help), is to make a huge effort to stop it. Even though we may fail at completely stopping it, its good that your at least improving on not doing it as much!!! :D MARANATHA!!!

  89. Alec Brower says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This verse is pretty intimidating. It is scary to think that God is against us becuase of all the sin in our life, but thakfully he sent his ONE and ONLY son to die for us so that we can live in heaven for eternity. Also, God is very loving because he sent his son for us sinners.

  90. Jameson Johnson says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.
    This chapter was soo intense! God has such amazing power and His wrath is scary. But, sin is sin and God will punish all sin the same unless we have Jesus. Whether someone lied or killed a person, God hates sin. Just the fact that God has enough power to destroy an an entire city. or an entire world should make us all want to repent. Not out of fear of God’s wrat but out of ultimate respect adn reverence for Him.

  91. Kelsey Collins says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Its crazy to me that people think that God is this lovable teddy bear ready to bring in anybody that ‘loves’ him first. Obviously some people have not read this verse, because this cleary states that God is not happy when people disobey Him. God is ready to take out everyone of us, and put us into the lake of fire. This doesnt mean that I can just live the rest of my life knowing int he back of my head that some people dont know the full truth. I have to help as many people as possible realize that God isnt this all loving God, and that He will punish us. This past week I learned so much on how hell is a very scary place and that I am a very mean person to not tell people about it. I could never image seeing the face of someone who was at the gates of heaven and thinking ‘why didnt kelsey tell me about God, I knew she was a christian.’ That would terrible, and so I need to step up the rest of my summer in shareing the gospel with my teamates every morning at practice, especially my neighbors.

  92. David Pum was saved at Revival X says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This verse and the whole chapter tell how God hates sin and punishes people for their sins. I am so grateful that God sent Jesus to die for our sins and rose from the dead so that we won’t be punished. Jesus took our punishments from God for us and we should praise Him forever for the wonderful thing that He has done.

    MARANATHA!!!

  93. Bryce Nilsson from Christian/Private says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God hates it when we sin! In this verse alone we can see Gods wrath expressed to us. God wants to destroy everything that is evil and sins against him. Thankfully, our God provides us a way out of sin, and a way to meet him in heaven one day. The only way to avoid Gods wrath is to repent of our sins and cry out to God begging him to forgive us through his son Jesus Christ. Being Christians, we know the dangers of Gods wrath. If we know people that are not right with God and we let them “walk off the cliff” to their own destruction without saying anything, we simply don’t care about them. We need to set examples by repenting of our sins and making a commitment to live our lives to glorify God and him alone!!! MARANATHA

  94. Janiel V says:

    10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    Hearts melt and knees tremble;
    anguish is in all loins;
    all faces grow pale!

    Imagine the faces of those that we chose NOT to talk to Jesus, it’d be something along the lines of betrayal and disappointment, to say the least. what pastor Bobby said @Sunday, if it ever happpens that that last person that got saved before God called us all back home was the one who I evaangelized to, it got me really excited for school mainly cuz it’s the one oppurtunity that there will always be people to spread the gospel to :D

  95. Katie Bumpus says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    The Lord is declaring destruction to Nineveh for all the sin and wrong-doings the people have committed. He wants to restore it to a holy land like it once was. He will do this to us as well because now in modern times people sin left and right like it’s no big deal. Although, the day of the Lord’s coming in soon and He will bring His true followers in Christ home to Heaven. To those who are deep in their transgressions, they must face the wrath of God and be judged justly by the Lord when the day comes.

  96. tate ewing says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard

    The Lord is a just God. This verse inspires me to go and tell everyone about his power since so many people just think of Him as love or just forgiving. He is obviously serious when He says “I am against you” this in this verse. Living by the Bible as a whole, not just the parts that look happy and nice is really important. I hear so many people just say that they will get down to business with christianity when they get older.. this verse shows that God is serious right now and always. He never changes. He is the same today, tomorrow, and forever.. I can’t wait until the day He comes back!

  97. RyanO'Hare says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    I think this verse is talking to the non believers, that if you don’t follow him he will send you through horrible things beyond belief. You will no longer be able to be saved or communicate with the Lord when that day comes.

  98. 13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This is such a powerful verse! This is showing how strong the Lord is. He is so powerful and Nuham is living his life without the Lord, in which many people are doing the same thing. This is when the Lord finally shows Nuham punishments. Nuhman is now going through these terribles things but if he lived his life with the Lord, this would have never happend. This is telling me that I should not give up on telling people about the Lord. Yes, I may be mocked but being mocked is way better than seeing my friends and loved ones go through what Nuham went through. I pray that the Lord would just give me stregnth when I go and try to spread the Lords word!!

  99. Marissa Ramirez says:

    9 Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
    There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

    This verse stood out to me the most because during RevivalX we talked about living for the next life and not this life. I dont remember the Kings name but he had everything he ever wanted in this world and was living it up. Sadly he didnt know about our God and suffered the price. So in Hell he asked Abraham to send someone to worn his 5 sibblings. He didnt send anyone because the prophets are more powerful then a dead person coming back and telling you to watch out. Yesterday at church Pastor Bobby said that we hold the key of Heaven it is just terrible to keep it to ourselves and not share it with the world. How are people going to find ouit the greatnest of our God if we will not go out there and share it with them. So I encouage you all to go out there and share the bible with your family, friends, and even strangers. Maranatha!!!

  100. Jimmy Kang says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard. (ESV

    This verse shows how our focus should be on doing works for God and be relying on him because hwn we start to rely on things of this earth God will end you a wake up call as to who is in charge and will take your worldly possesions away so that you can rely on him and depend on him for all your needs. We need to always be in prayer and be asking for God’s help and we can find security in him as apposed to all of the money, cars, houses or whatever gives us security because these things distract us from depending on God and praising him for everything we have

  101. olivia gamart says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    this verse is intense. If your a Chrisitan, you need to work on not sinning over and over(especially the same sin), and just sinning alot LESS. and also keeping the Ten Commandments, For our Lord is very powerful. We need to also spread the Gospel to Our non-christian friends, and just everyone and anyone, we cant make them become a Christian, buut we sure can help them to a good start on leading down the narrow path.

  102. Ryan Pierce says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    As Pastor Ben’s song “The One We have pierced” says, ‘the Earth will be restored.’ the Earth is full of sin, of death, of tears and pain. Once the last trumpet sounds however, and all of us who have a life with Christ are united together, singing praises unto HIM, the Earth will be restored and sin will be no more. It is such an amazing thought to imagine a perfect Earth with no sin or pain, and one that will be pure and holy… and i can not wait until the day when we DO see Jesus face to face, get new bodies, a new earth, and be with Jesus forevermore! Come Lord Jesus!

  103. anita schmidt says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Wow this is so awsome that we are stepping into commenting SOTD! i love it. Ok well i liked verse 13, at first i didnt really understand the chapter, when i read other peoples comments on verse 13 did made it so clear. its saying that the LORd is against the world andhe will get everyone that wanted or wants to live for this life n for this world. When he people die and they werent the people for Jesus Christ they wouldnt understand what they have done to be in the lake of fire,they thought they were a good person rember its not bout being a good person. All people have to do it repent and have faith in God, its a better life anyways and you will be waiting to live in the next life. witch i just cant wait for!

  104. Boyd Jorden says:

    11 Where is the lions’ den,
    the feeding place of the young lions,
    where the lion and lioness went,
    where his cubs were, with none to disturb?
    12 The lion tore enough for his cubs
    and strangled prey for his lionesses;
    he filled his caves with prey
    and his dens with torn flesh.

    As we all know, many people, especialy in the OC, measure the success of their lives by how much earthly treasure they store up (or in this verse, torn flesh). If their den is stocked, they start to think they’re safe and secure. They get lulled into thinking their material wealth has gotten them to the top. But this earth isn’t the top, it’s the bottom. Even worse, people who possess wealth and means can often begin to take credit for their success, instead of giving credit to God, and begin to see themselves as above others–and, more importantly, above God. They see themselves as king of the jungle. But there’s only one true King. One King of Glory, strong and mighty. While earthly wealth can open many earthly doors, Jesus is the one way to God and salvation (John 14:6). There will be a day when all of those people who store up earthly treasure–even the fiercest lions–are going to discover that what it really buys them is the full measure of God’s wrath. His great jaws are going to snap. I want to make sure that I’m telling people the gospel and urging them to repent and begin storing up treasure in heaven. And I want to guard my own heart against putting stock in earthly things. Jesus Christ is the only lion who can save and protect me.

  105. Ephraim Turner says:

    10 “Desolate! Desolation and ruin! Hearts melt and knees tremble; anguish is in all loins; all faces grow pale!”

    I think this verse really illustrates God’s awesome power and ability to destroy those who oppose him. He is so powerful that NOTHING can stand in his way, for this reason we need to surrender to him because although he has the power to make men feel anguish in their loins, he also has the power to save. Praise the Lord for his grace and mercy!

  106. Robin O says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    Woah that was an intense passage! Despite the rest of the passage where God is warning us (and Ninevah) about his wrath and what will happen to us if we do not abide by his word, the beginning of the chapter starts out with a faint hopefulness that the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob and that He is working in the world for good. Even though Israel has fallen and rose up and fallen again, it does remind us that God is with us. (:

  107. G- Bark says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    The Lord will take away everything we have at some point in our lives, because none of it is important. We would never want the Lord to be against us and that would just be scary. He has a lot of power, so we need to be on His good side. The wrath of God is amazing, He is just so powerful.

  108. Savie Russell-7.22.10 Revival X, Best day of my life! says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    God can and will take away everything from us. But when he takes our lives and main possessions he will give us the biggest and best things in heaven! I am waiting for that day to see him face to face! MARANATHA!

  109. Taylor Anderson says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.
    if anyone believes that there is no fear of God there is just reverence and awe, this verse is proof that we need to fear God.
    the Lord despises sin and he wants to destroy all evil. he isn’t only a loving God he is just and perfect and wants to destroy all imperfect things. knowing this i need to stop sinning and also tell everyone possible the truth about God, that he doesn’t ignore sin but he punishes it. praise the Lord that he gives us a way out of that punishment which is through his son but not everyone knows that so God commands us to tell everyone the gospel so they can repent and have faith so God wont pour out his wrath on them in the lake of fire. this verse encourages me to evangelize to everyone so they don’t have the wrong idea of God that he is just a loving God and doesn’t mind sin. he hates it and will destroy it. and it also reminds me to take sin seriously and rely on God to help me fight against it.

  110. Kassidy Ballesteros says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard
    God is so loving. And in previous verses it shows that with his forgiveness towards Israel. But, not only is God loving; He is just. That means he will punish our sins. As christians we are not to live in sin. We will still sin, but there is a difference between living in in sin and sinning. So pretty much as christians instead of being sinless we are called to be sin less.
    MARANATHA!!!

  111. As i was reading this i felt sad because it talked alot about destruction. Knowing that God had to become angry and punish the people in Nineveh. However God is a JUST and LOVING God, people are still held to their actions. I am thankful that God hears our repentance and we are forgiven. This really makes me want to evaluate how i need to make sure that my nonchristian friends hear the gospel truth.

  112. CHIU says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard. (ESV)

    This verse really displays God’s righteous anger and wrath. He is justly Punishing The Ninevites for the sins they are committing. We should praise God for being such an awesome just God that cannot stand any imperfection.

  113. nina says:

    wow i needed t reAD that today. i felt like it was aying hard times are here and coming but god is on our side…

  114. spencer revely says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    words cannot describe my thankfulness that the lord of host is with me and not against me that i have nothing to offer him and yet he saves me from his wrath that i totally deserve and not only does he save me from his wrath but he rewards me and lets me spend eternity with him. if i were you i would just take a second to think about gods amazing love.

  115. Brett Nilsson says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Everything that we have is from, and is coming from the Lord God Almighty. If we forget/don’t know that very thing, you are missing out…

  116. Murphy Danahy lowly servant of the living GOD says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This is a great verse. This verse describes the terror of having the LORD angry with us. GOD is wrathful and can do many terrifying things, and the more we read about his wrath, the more we should understand how terrible anything but GOD’s love can be.

  117. 13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Like Meisha said, It would be so scary to have God against you! But because we have repented of our sins and made a 180* turn from sin to God we have His grace. God is a just God and will give out His wrath to those who did not repent. And God can take and will take everything away in our lives, so why store up earthly things here? Instead we should store up treasures in Heaven because that is our real home!

  118. Ariana Mishreki from Laguna Hills/Mission says:

    Nahum 1 talked about what God is capable of. But in Nahum 2, it talks about what God will DO. I thought it was neat how both chapters talked about God’s strength and what He can/will do, but most importantly, His POWER! My Lord is POWERFUL! In verse 13, when God says how He’ll burn up the chariots, I was like, OH! Here He is, now destroying Nineveh and telling the people how it’s going to go down.

    Like “Chiu” said above, I too am glad that the Lord can’t stand any imperfection. Why? Because, He, Himself ISSS perfect!!!

  119. Neakzaad says:

    2:1 The scatterer has come up against you.
    Man the ramparts;
    watch the road;
    dress for battle;
    collect all your strength.

    The first stanza of this chapter spoke to me the most out of all of them! I mean we all come out of revival so hot for God and so revived, but the “scatterer” is coming–and he is the evil one who is trying to kill all of the revival and is trying to make us like the second First student who came back from revival. The one who fell back into the world. And we are warned–but then we have to act on our warning, if we dont we are foolish–we need to dress for battle against the evil sins and the evil scatterer that is coming our way. This spoke to my heart so much, because i thought i would never feel temptation and struggle after being raised from the dead, but i realize i will and when the time comes, because it will, we must be ready to fight–not just let the warning float above our heads–Verse One is OUR Warning against spiritual relapse!

  120. Christa Blakey says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    This is the scariest thing I can imagine–God being against me. God is God, there is no other! He has all the power and authority to judge and no one will escape his judgment. I like how Bobby pointed out that we need to fear God and not people because of this reality. Reading this chapter tonight was an important reminder to me that God hates sin and I don’t want to tolerate any sin in my life. I am also praising God that in his Son he has justified and accepted me!

  121. Evan McKee says:

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    It’s cool how much God loves and cares for his people. He has a plan for everyone and will watch out for his people.

  122. Morgan Sherman from Aliso/Dana says:

    As everyone else has said, this chapter instills a very healthy fear of the wrath of God in me! Hebrews 10:32…”it is a dreadful thing to fall into the lands of the living God.” God takes sin so much more seriously than I do, and I learned that in one of the messages at Revival. I know that there are even sins that I commit that I even fail to recognize! Passages like this do three things:

    1. Give me and even higher view of God
    2. Make me want to sin less OUT OF fear of God
    3. Make me get on my knees out of thanksgiving for what Jesus did on the cross for me so I don’t have to endure God’s wrath!

  123. Theresa says:

    verse 13. behold i am against you, declares the LORD of hosts,

    that seems like such as scary thought. why on earth would people deny God’s presence day after day? why deny that Jesus is God’s son? granted God does all the work in opeing people’s hearts to hear His words, it seems so silly to me to reject Jesus and God time and time again. look at all the vivid descriptions that Nahum 2 gives, and thats just God’s wrath against Nineveh. how scary is that? i praise God for the salvation that He has given to His followers. He saved us from His wrath. That is something to be majorly thankful about. the only thought left when i finished reading was wow. And this was the justice God gave to a city whom he had not long ago sent a Jonah to. They had a revival and some time later, God is pouring out his wrath. How scary.

  124. Sarah Bryanne who is praising God for 121 responses to SOTD! says:

    2:1 The scatterer has come up against you.
    Man the ramparts;
    watch the road;
    dress for battle;
    collect all your strength.

    This reminds me of what we need to be doing for judgement day. We need to be storing up treasures in Heaven and make disciples of Him for when that day comes, so that we can be ready for what will happen when Christ comes back. I can’t wait for that day!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!

  125. JWade says:

    God cares about if we turn away and He hates when we do. He doesnt want to see anyone go to hell but He must punishe His children.

    MARANTHA!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  126. Josh Crichton says:

    I had to read over this 3 times and listen to it twice before i could figure out watt i was going to say.

    2 For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
    for plunderers have plundered them
    and ruined their branches.

    I saw other people talking about this verse as well, and i could not agree more about what the ones i read said. This is talking about God’s grace, and us people who grew up in the church and sunday school, we know that Israel had there ups and downs. They went against God’s commands so many times, but God always forgave them because of His grace. But we do need to remember that to receive God’s grace, one must put his faith and trust in the Lord and repent of his sins. also…..

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    …even tho God’s grace is infinite, this does not mean we get to just go on deliberately sinning (ik this was talked about at revival, just cant remember the verse). God is just and will punish us. He will give sinners what they deserve (eternity in Hell), unless they put their faith in god and rent of their sins. You guys, God doesn’t forget!!!! We will all have to take account for everything we do (another verse i cant remember where it is). I hope that we all take this seriously cuz He is coming soon. MARANATHA!!!!!!!!

  127. Dr. Jones says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Every time I read an Old Testament passage, I recreate what it would look like in modern society to get a perspective from the time it was written. This is one passage that paints a scary image in the mind of its readers that we can benefit from. If we keep our minds focused on how powerful God is and how he is omnipotent and eternal, it helps in our daily lives when we strive for Godliness. No matter how high our view of God is, it won’t match up to his true worth. This is why as Christians we need to constantly be trying to raise our view of God and serve him more. These verses really inspire me to kick things up a notch and worship God for all that he is. To him be the Glory forever and ever!!

  128. Verse 13

    God gives us everything, but if we don’t give thanks, living like our Creator doesn’t matter and completely live in sin, God will judge us according to what we have done. A lot of people focus on how God is so loving, which is completely true. Nothing is more loving than sending Jesus Christ to live here on earth with sinners, just to take away our sin. But, God is more than loving. He is good which means he is fair and just like we talked about at revival. For God to be good, he will judge those who don’t repent and put their faith in Christ. Loving all the comments on SOTD! Let’s keep the revival going!

  129. Spencer Camp from San Clemente says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts

    Many are God’s enemies! This reminds me of the Philippians 3:18:

    “For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.”

    God is not afraid of anyone, and with flaming arrows he’s going to go after people and take them out, whether they like it or not. Anyone who has sinned, as Ninevah has clearly done, will be taken out like a light. Many are enemies the verse says: our friends, our neighbors, our team members, and sadly many in the church. No one is safe from God.

    Except Jesus’ sacrifice made our relationship with the living God possible. His sacrifice brought us redemption and peace.

    God is good all the time! :)

  130. Cristina Brower says:

    9 Plunder the silver, plunder the gold!
    There is no end of the treasure or of the wealth of all precious things.

    When i read this verse, it puts into perspective how when the Lord returns, EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD WILL BURN! By reading this, my mind instantly thinks about Matthew 6:19-21 which talks about storing up for ourselves treasures in Heaven, because the treausres we store on earth will be destroyed!

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Reading this verse makes me so thankful that my sins have been graciously forgiven, and God is not against me! I cannot fathom the thought of God being against me. The truth is though, many many people in this world do not have God on their side like we do! it is up to US to share the Gospel with them, in hope of true repentance and faith! I pray that all of us would double-it-up and start evangelizing to all of our friends! Romans 1:16!!

    maranatha.

  131. Haley Litz says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    That is scary! I do not want God to be against me! God is all powerful and to be feared! This reminds me of so many people at school who are lost and God is against them! I need to reach out and tell them the bad news and then the good news of the gospel! Also, like Christa said, I don’t want to tolerate sin in my life! God is powerful and hates sin!

  132. T moore 2011 says:

    Okay, well when I first read the chapter, I didn’t know what to comment on because I didn’t completely get it all lol. But I started reading all the comments (well most of them at least) and some of them are really helpful as to what this chapter has to offer. Like Neakzaad said about verse 1, we need to be ready for the battle of the world coming back from revival and back from our “spiritual high” so to say.
    I also got from many different comments how God is just and loving to us. We will sin against God and it is his character to punish those sins. But it is also in his character to love his people and, through Jesus, we can experience his forgiveness and grace.
    There were also many other things I learned from the comments that were really helpful too. I pray that God would work through me and give me wisdom through his word for future situations to further his kingdom and will.

  133. Jasmine Douglas says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    Whoa! How intense is this? Our God is so powerful! If you are not for him, you are clearly against him. And I am so thankful for being on God’s team! One day God will pour out his wrath on sinners and this is such a motivation for me to share the truth with those around me. If I know the one, Jesus, who paid the price for our sins, what would keep me from sharing that with others? Tonight my prayer is that I find an opportunity to share the gospel with someone tomorrow, and take it!

  134. Servant Senior of the Almighty, Mark 2011 says:

    9 Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
    There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

    This verse mentions how we here on earth can think so much of worldly possessions we lose sight of the fact that none of it matters!! The only treasures that I need to be seeking after are those that will be in heaven!! I build up treasure and store it in heaven, by what I show through my walk with Jesus Christ down here on earth!! Eternal life with God is the eternal reward that needs to constantly be on my mind because that is what we are all working for!! Having eternal life with God is big enough gift as it is, but God says we can store up treasure in heaven by what we do on here!! However, let not our intentions be set on getting more heavenly rewards, wrather furthuring the kingdom of God and spread the gospel to everyone around us!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  135. Dan Blankenship says:

    Nahum 2

    2 For the LORD is restoring the majesty of Jacob as the majesty of Israel, for plunderers have plundered them and ruined their branches.

    The Lord is going to bring His judgment upon the people of Nineveh because they did not repent. As I learned in Pastor Bobby’s blog on the book of Nineveh Judah was being oppressed by Nineveh and God is going to bring judgment upon them. As we read in verse 13 the Lord is against Nineveh and will bring desolation and ruin upon them. I like how we see God’s faithfulness to His people and will not let any evil deed go unpaid. Vengeance is mine says the Lord. The people of Nineveh rejected God’s offer of repentance that came from Jonah but their hearts were hardened. This sounds like Orange County where people are given the Gospel of repentance and faith but reject it and follow their own selfish desires and god’s. I pray that I will stand up for Christ at every opportunity to share the Gospel with family and friends without discrimination. I am very excited and looking forward to evangelism night this coming Saturday. I pray that God will use True North to start a REVIVAL all over the OC.

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

  136. [DB] says:

    13 Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

    I like verses like this that remind us another quality of the Lord. He will bring down judgement upon those who are disobedient to His Law. Always make sure that you are fearing and keeping in with what He has commanded us!

  137. Evan Winslow from Laguna Hills/Mission says:

    “I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions.”

    When God judges, he judges specifically. He always seems to go after the very thing that was bringing the sinning nations pride. Perhaps it’s the same with us. If something doesn’t seem to be going our way, perhaps it’s a time to step back and see whether or not we’re trusting in that thing to bring us joy, or just loving that thing more than God.
