A Life Pleasing to God
4:1 Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, 11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
The Coming of the Lord
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. (ESV)

17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
18Therefore encourage each other with these words.
The knowledge that this is true can be overwhelming (in a good way) and is a source of so much hope and happiness. It is also a good reminder that the life we experience here on Earth is not what we should be living for, as the mass of the population condones. If we are still alive at that point, there is no doubt that this will occur. I am so thankful for the certainties that we find in Scripture.
7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
God expects perfection to get into heaven. We know, though, that no one is perfect, but through Jesus we can be seen as perfect. But we are all sinners and because of our sinful nature we will always have those struggles. This verse is reminding us that we are still called, however, to live a holy life, despite the sin we constantly face and fall into. Don’t give up and remain impure but strive to be holy.
8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
This is a good verse. Paul gave instructions to the Thessalonians on how to live a Godly life, including a sort of “what not to do” list. Here in verse 8, it tells us why we it’s so important to not do the wrong thing. “He who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God,” is what it says. This applies to all sin. Breaking the rules, like the law or parents rules, is not just going against people but against the ultimate authority, God. That’s why it’s so serious. Any sin is a direct rejection of God, no matter what. This is why we need to continually strive to be more Godly! The more we read His word and do what He says the more like Him we become and the less we’ll screw up and sin!
1 Thes 7-8 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
Nice post Di and Max! Please consider these verses in context and together: God is specifically calling us to be sexually pure and controlling our bodies. This specific instruction is vital to understand as teenage bodies are becoming subject to the very temptations that cause sexual sin. Please heed the warnings against sexual impurity: keeping our thoughts pure and capturing each sinful thought for Christ is vitally important. Learning NOW to control your mind and body in a holy and honorable way pleases God and has huge blessings in this world – at the proper time and within the marriage covenant.
Not learning to deny yourself from indulging in lust, of both the mind and body, is sin that God hates and the consequences are long lasting and harm not only you, God but many others. Every impure thought ROBS your future spouse of part of you that God has ‘set aside’ for that person. And if you don’t learn the lesson of control now it will be a weapon that Satan uses against you when times are tough in your marriage down the road. So keep away from even a hint of impurity (Eph 5:3) – save your purity for the one God has picked for you at the time He has picked.
11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,
This verse is refering to people who does not make social problems or generate conflict among people in the their life. They know the Lord is always there for them, and their soul rests in the peace of the Lord even in times of hurt or pain.
1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
Mmmm, never say that you’re doing “good enough.” If you’re pleasing God through your actions, go BIGGER! You can never do too much. Everything should be pleasing to Him, please Him more and more through the life he’s given you.
4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
The fact that it says control kinda made this verse pop out to me. It is up to us, we are in our own control and theres no one to blame but ourselves when we sin. Be holy for God is holy!
13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
These verses have really ministered to me over the past month. In April my grandpa died and went home to be with the Lord. He was the first person who I loved deeply and enjoyed a close relationship with that I have lost. When he was lying unconscious in his bed in the ICU it seemed so final to go in and say goodbye, knowing that I would never see him on earth again. However, after the initial shock of his death subsided the truth that I would see him again in heaven comforted me in my grief. I am grateful to God that 1 Thes. 4:13-14 is in the Bible to assure Christians that we can grieve differently than the rest of the world. We have the hope that Christ conquered death and that anyone we know who dies that is in Christ will conquer death, too. Thank you God for the comfort Your Word has provided me during this difficult time of grief in my life!
12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
As Christians, if we are obedient to put the Bible into practice each day, we will win the respect of the people around us. They may not agree with what we say, but they shouldn’t be able to point to our life and say, that is wrong. The way we live our life is a powerful witness that compliments the gospel message of repentance and faith. The two go together and you can’t have one without the other. People will not listen to the gospel if your lifestyle is a blatant contradiction to it, and they can’t hear the message unless we open our mouths.
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
I recently had a conversation with someone about being obedient to God by being in his Word and they seemed excited and said that they wanted to obey but that it was just so hard to actually KEEP obeying for a long period of time.
We have clearly been instructed how to live pleasing to God and we need to take what we are hearing and reading from his Word seriously and do it! But not just right when encounter the instruction, and a few weeks later we’ve forgotten about it or are just lazy and become disobedient. Lack of perseverance stunts our growth and will keep us immature spiritually. And the reality is that only real Christians continue to endure and persevere in living obediently to Lord.
Paul says here to do this “more and more.” This makes me think of an awesome passage, 2 Peter 1:5-9 where we are commanded to add to our faith other qualities God requires of us and not just think “I’m good” where I am today but continue to do what God wants more and more!
I read a great verse yesterday from the Book of Psalm that talks about God’s Word: Psalm 19:7 “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”
This chapter has like two different objectives, the first 12 verses are instructions for Godly living and verses 13-18 are about the assurance concerning those who die before Christ’s return. This chapter and through out the whole book, Paul is encouraging all the people from the church of Thessalonica, many of them were new converts when he wrote this letter.
3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
So many high schoolers in Orange County are not trying to avoid sexual immorality, but they are trying to find it. It’s sad, it’s idolatry. Colossians 3:5 “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry” we need to stay far away from the line like Joseph and Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39.
7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
God expects perfection and a life with fault. I know we are human, but we are commanded to live a holy life, apart from sin. So let’s make sure we are obedient and not rebelling against God.
17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever
Talks about the Rapture! The subject of the last campus lunch we preached on. Those who are still alive on earth, will go up into the air and meet the Lord in the sky. This will happen before God judges the world. We deserve to recieve judgment from God but because we accepted God’s grace because Christ has died for our sins and we turn to him in faith and repentance we can be with the Lord forever and ever. This is because He has forgiven us for all our sin!
This Chapter is filled with so much encouragement and practical application! I love how Paul identifies what the thessalonians are doing right and then commands them to “do this more and more”. We can never stop growning in our santification. We should NEVE become complacent with our faith and our prititual maturity. Christa- you had an AWSEOME comment regarding this today!!
11Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,
12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
This is so important to understand-We are witnessing to the world everyday weather we realize it or not! Lets honor Christ in all that we do so thatour lives are a wlking witness to the unsaved world!
Then Paul ends the Chapter wil a great big MARANATHA!! We Have so much to rejoice about!! Never stop giving thanks for the salvation that you have received. As Pastor Ben said… Preach the Gospel to yourself everyday!
3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
I know this is a sensitive subject and one that teenagers will struggle with. But just imagine looking your husband or wife in the eyes on your wedding day and how special the gift of purity will be. The good news is that God gives us His holy spirit for strength and the gift of discernmemnt in order that you make good decisions.
8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
Understanding these verses is crucial for our sanctification; we need to consistently be striving to live self-controlled lives in all areas, saying no to sin and striving to be holy. It is important to notice here however that Paul addresses the specific sin of sexual immorality and the warning to stay far far away from it. In fact in Ephesians 5:3 we read, “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” NOT EVEN A HINT! Why should we not behave in this way? Because we know God as verse 5 says, and we should possess our vessles with self-control and use them to bring glory to God!
NEW BLOG ON GOD’S LOVE!
12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
It is so important that we have the respect of those who are not yet Christians. When we have their respect, it opens the door wide open to share the gospel with them. We need to bring honor and glory to God throughout our every action. One of my favorites quotes says, “Preach Christ daily, and when necessary, use words.” Let’s have this attitude as we go out and represent Christ today!
Great comment Jacob! I also really like that quote.
1 “Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.”
The Thessalonians were listening to Paul’s teaching and applying it to their lives. They were living God-glorifying lives in order to please their Creator. Here Paul, Silas, and Timothy tell us that that is how we ought to live: we ought to live in order to please God. Let us do that today; let’s consider what God’s will is and, setting aside our own priorities, endeavor to please Him!
3 “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;”
7 “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.”
Are we uncertain of what God wants us to do? We shouldn’t be, because right here we’re told! God wants us to be sanctified, having control over our sinful nature, and not letting it run free in our lives. Like we’re told here, He does not want us to be continually in sin or impure, but rather to be living to please Him, living holy lives. Let us remember what His will is for us today, and act upon that knowledge with obedience to Him.
16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
18Therefore encourage each other with these words.
These are very encouraging words. I can’t wait for this day to come!!! When I grow weary of my toil here on earth I think of heaven and the joy that I will enjoy one day. Then these days will seem like a vapor. I need to live now in anticipation of the day when I get to meet Jesus face to face. May that day come soon!
Wow, these are such encouraging words to know that someday Christ will return here to earth and bring the Christians to heaven!!! It really is SO encouraging like verse 18 then says. I cannot imagine the fear of our earth as those who did not listen, those who had hearts of stone, those who did not believe watch in terror as the almighty power of our Savior returns to earth. The trumpet call of God must be amazing! I really just can’t wait to spend eternity in heaven with God and I hope we can share the excitement with others so they aren’t left here if God were to return.
11Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,
12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
I think almost everyone likes quiet. It’s peaceful, and soothing. Here GOD is calling us to live a quiet life, not causing conflict, not making struggles for ourselves and those around us. As Christians we should be the voices of peace and inner calm that attracts those looking in. Then, those people will see and will most likely try to find out what causes that in us. So by our peace, we can bring others to CHRIST, by stopping conflict instead of causing in we can fufill GOD’s goals.
10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.
This whole entire chapter was fabulous! Specifically, this verse is just one example on how we need to love eachother, and keep eachother accountable. Although the Thessalonians were being good followers of God, Paul is telling them to continue their practice. This also ties into growing spritually too.Such a great example on how we need to live our lives today.Although there can be multiple points to this verse, all of these points are very important for the Christian llife.
3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
These are verses that we really need to examine and consider as high school students. So much of the world today revolves around pleasing our flesh, our eyes, our senses, yet we are called to be above that. We are called to avoid things like sexual immorality, as children of Christ. To show that we can resist such things is to show that we are truly born again in Him!
17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
This is so exciting to think abouttttttt!! I cant wait it will be amazing to be taken to heaven to live with Christ for eternity:)
and i always enjoy reading verses about love, it never hurts to be reminded about how we should be treating one another! Thank you Jesus for the example you set for us!
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
The Thessalonians are living a life that pleases God but Paul is urging them to do this even more. This is a great reminder for those who are doing well in their walk. You may be in the word, actively pursuing a deeper relationship with God and yet, there is always room to grow. A great word to describe what is being asked here is the word excel. The word excel means “to abound, to be abundantly supplied, to overflow, to exist in full quantity, to be over and above and around, to be advanced.” A closely related form of the word can mean “extraordinary,” or “surpassing.” This is the goal of this verse, it is reminiscent of Phil 3:12-13, 13, Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. I pray that this would be the lifetime pursuit of all those that proclaim the name of Christ.
3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
Paul now gets to some very practical application here in 1 Thess and the very first thing he talks about is purity. That simply shows how important of an issue this is! We need to be checking out own lives and making sure that we are living pure lives before God. And we must pray not only for purity in our actions, but deep in our hearts as well!
5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
Even just by NOT doing something, we will be a very clear witness to the world. You can stand out in your high school as someone who lives a pure life.
8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
It is very easy at times to reject instruction, to hear teaching and not to care about doing what we are told. But when we do this with Biblical teaching, we are rejecting not only man, but God. This is, of course, a very dangerous place to be in; God will not allow His children to stay in such a place without punishment. So while we may have our own selfish reasons for wanting what we want above what God wants, in the end that path will be much worse for us.
I really love this chapter!
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
I find myself not always living the life God has commanded me to be living as a Christian. I need to be way more respectful to my parents realizing that all I do should be done to the glory of the Lord.
11Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,
Right when I read this verse it reminded me of gossip! What a great verse for girls! “mind your own business” haha yes that is convicting. I also like the “lead a quit life” part because it reminds me that I don’t always need to be the one talking because when I do I am more liable to say something that doesn’t need to be said or that will get me in trouble.
Great Verses!
3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
This verse tells us that we are to be set apart from sin to holiness. This is God’s will for our lives. As High Schoolers, it’s something that people can struggle with, but the bible clearly says to stay away from any sexual immorality. Pleasing God is the most important thing. God does not tempt us with more than we can handle, so we can’t think that its “too hard” to stay away. Pray that the Lord will strengthen you in your weak areas and let’s stay in his word to keep us strong.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
This specific calling from God, to live a holy life, is what motivates me to fight sin everyday. Every morning the constant struggle to live contrary to the sinful motives that bombard eyes and ears is renewed.
Although the whole Earth and the fiery arrows of the devil stand against, nothing is to fear because, behold, Christ Jesus, our Lord, has conquered the earth (sin) and so will we.
A neverending remider to perservere in the war against sin, upholding the arsenal of God (Eph 6:11).
17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
That is something to be looking forward to! Going up to Heaven with our Lord and we will be with Him forever. When Christian life gets tough we need to remember that this is going to happen and to not give up. MARANATHA!!!!
3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.
7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
No questioning this passage. There ain’t no loopholes in the Bible so I should remember to double check there and make sure im not inventing my own standards of living.
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
I love the phrase “more and more” in this verse. Even if we are living good lives compared to some people we know, we are not good enough. Our standard is God and we shouldn’t forget that. Recognizing the power of God keeps us humble.
13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.
One of the hardest things in the world is dealing with the death of a loved one. It can be physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausting. But if the person who died is a Christian, we know we will get to see them again. We know they’re no longer suffering on earth. We know that they really are in a better place. It may not help the initial pain, but it will help once we think about the long run.
13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.
This verse tells us that we need to be out there reaching out to people who need Christ. If we keep telling ourselves that “we’ll talk to that person later” or “There’s nothing i can do to help” we are making the wrong choice. They might need our words just to help give them that push and it could change there life. Plus this verse tells us that we have hope. When we are down, or something is bugging us we can just think that God has given us hope and we know where we are going. He is hear for us through everything :)
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
Great verse to start out on. No matter how much or what we do, it won’t be enough for God. We can not be content with our selves because we will never be able to do everything God commands us to. We should always be striving to do more work to please God and be living for Him and not ourselves.
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
This is saying that obedience isn’t a one time thing or you go so far and are all good. This is something that has to be worked at and pursued our whole lives for the Lord to please Him and bring glory to His name!!!
4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
Hey I love this verse. We need to control our body or our sinful desires will take over us and I don’t want that to happen. So lets control our body so we can do what God says and not what our flesh wants.
I am totally feeling this chapter because I have been preaching through it in the main service! If you are looking for something to watch late on a Friday night here are two sermons I have done:

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever….
The number of comments on SOTD is going to plummet the day the Lord returns and we meet him….
But until then, let’s keep encouraging one another by posting!
1st Thessalonians 4
3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.
It is only thru a close relationship with God thru Jesus Christ that we are able to do anything that is holy. Our sinful nature can only be avoided thru sanctification which leads to a life of Christ. Sexual immorality is one of the most significant stumbling blocks for High School students. God really hates sexual immorality of any kind.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We as Christians have been set apart from the ways of this hedonistic world. God has given us a way out from every instance of sexual sin.
1st Cor 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
God will not show mercy on those who try to justify their sexual immorality. God although is faithful to those who are faithful to his will.
Paul here in verse 6 warns that “No one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him” in matters of sexual impurity. Paul is talking to the Christian in particular here warning that if you lead or even tempt another into sexual impurity the Lord will punish you for all such sins. If you are involved in sexual immorality with another person you are not only sinning against God but you are also involving another person to go against God and possibly lead them away from a relationship with God.
Gal 6:7-8 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
We have been given instructions in God’s Word on how to please him while we are living. Unfortunately, we often take His Holy Word for granted and do not approach obedience seriously. We are called to glorify God in all we say and do (1 Corinthians 10:31). If we are not obedient to His Word because we are ignorant of what it says, we are not pleasing the Lord. I pray that we will be obedient to these instructions “more and more” so that we may live a pleasing life before the Lord.
4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
It is up to us, we are in our own control and theres no one to blame but ourselves when we sin. Be holy for God is holy! Do what God ask and you don’t even need to think twice about be in control and pure
