Exodus 36

36:1 “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the Lord has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded.”

And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work. And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.

And all the craftsmen among the workmen made the tabernacle with ten curtains. They were made of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns, with cherubim skillfully worked. The length of each curtain was twenty-eight cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits. All the curtains were the same size.

10 He coupled five curtains to one another, and the other five curtains he coupled to one another. 11 He made loops of blue on the edge of the outermost curtain of the first set. Likewise he made them on the edge of the outermost curtain of the second set. 12 He made fifty loops on the one curtain, and he made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that was in the second set. The loops were opposite one another. 13 And he made fifty clasps of gold, and coupled the curtains one to the other with clasps. So the tabernacle was a single whole.

14 He also made curtains of goats’ hair for a tent over the tabernacle. He made eleven curtains. 15 The length of each curtain was thirty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits. The eleven curtains were the same size. 16 He coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves. 17 And he made fifty loops on the edge of the outermost curtain of the one set, and fifty loops on the edge of the other connecting curtain. 18 And he made fifty clasps of bronze to couple the tent together that it might be a single whole. 19 And he made for the tent a covering of tanned rams’ skins and goatskins.

20 Then he made the upright frames for the tabernacle of acacia wood. 21 Ten cubits was the length of a frame, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each frame. 22 Each frame had two tenons for fitting together. He did this for all the frames of the tabernacle. 23 The frames for the tabernacle he made thus: twenty frames for the south side. 24 And he made forty bases of silver under the twenty frames, two bases under one frame for its two tenons, and two bases under the next frame for its two tenons. 25 For the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty frames 26 and their forty bases of silver, two bases under one frame and two bases under the next frame. 27 For the rear of the tabernacle westward he made six frames. 28 He made two frames for corners of the tabernacle in the rear. 29 And they were separate beneath but joined at the top, at the first ring. He made two of them this way for the two corners. 30 There were eight frames with their bases of silver: sixteen bases, under every frame two bases.

31 He made bars of acacia wood, five for the frames of the one side of the tabernacle, 32 and five bars for the frames of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the frames of the tabernacle at the rear westward. 33 And he made the middle bar to run from end to end halfway up the frames. 34 And he overlaid the frames with gold, and made their rings of gold for holders for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.

35 He made the veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; with cherubim skillfully worked into it he made it. 36 And for it he made four pillars of acacia and overlaid them with gold. Their hooks were of gold, and he cast for them four bases of silver. 37 He also made a screen for the entrance of the tent, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, embroidered with needlework, 38 and its five pillars with their hooks. He overlaid their capitals, and their fillets were of gold, but their five bases were of bronze. (ESV)

  1. 2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.

I like this verse! It shows that God gave them these abilities for His Glory so that the people could obey God! This reminds me, if God gives us a certain ability, do we use it to glorify Him? If we have the ability to write songs well, do we write songs that talk about the Lord? We should be like the people that are describe in this verse, they we were willing to do the work and willing to use their ability for the glory of God. No one forced them to use their ability, they did it out of free will!

***I also wrote a new blog about the exciting small group time we had at RWE!

  2. Old man new heart, thankful for the Healer when none deserve it!!! says:

Ex 36:1 So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the LORD has commanded.”

To whom the LORD has given skill… God is reminding us that HE is the source of everything: in this case it is talent and skill to do what He has asked. We come into this world with nothing and have everyting given to us, even things, in our pride, that we think we earn or develop wuch as the ability to perform certain work. Lord, thank You for giving us talent. May we all seek you first and use what You’ve given us for Your purpose alone.

  3. PaYtOn :] says:

2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.

God gave everyone a gift/many gifts and we need to use them for His name and to the best of our ability. :]

    ***GIVE THE GLORY TO GOD!!!***

  4. Just Drew says:

“The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.” 6 Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more

Its amazing how all the peolpe are supporting them so much. To the point that Moses had to tell them to stop because there was more than enough food for the work being done.

  5. Bobby Blakey says:

    Happy Friday True North!

In this chapter those who the Lord has given skillz started to pay the billz in a sense.

Look at how many of the verses begin with “They made” or “Then they made.” Seems like these people were working hard in their service of the Lord. Not only did they have his gifts, but they used them for his glory.

We need to make sure that we are working hard like we talked about last weekend at True North: http://www.compasschurch.org/hs/sermons

Also, we need to be serving God’s church today with our spiritual gifts:

1 Peter 4:11-12 – If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Pastor Mike is actually going to be speaking on this in the main service this weekend so make sure you double it up and attend both True North and main service!

  6. 1 So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the LORD has commanded.”

It stand out from the last couple of chapters and this one that they were very careful to do their work “just as the Lord commanded.” It made me think that I need to be like that, diligent in remembering what He has told me to do, being attentive and very careful to do just as He has commanded me, not lazy or offhanded about it.

  7. Beth Lauder says:

4 So all the skilled craftsmen who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left their work 5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

The thing that stood out to me today was that the skilled craftsmen had to stop their work to tell Moses that the people had given more than enough offerings for them to complete their tasks. WHhn does this happen? Normally people who are serving the church need to stop their work to make a plea to the congregation for more help in order to finish their tasks. The Israelites’ obedience and willingness to give all they had to the project of building the Tabernacle set an amazing example of how we should respond to needs in our church. I pray that my heart and the hearts of all of us at Compass Bible Church would be so generous and overflowing with obedience to God that the church leaders would be able to tell us that we have met their needs and do not need anything more for their tasks. Lord, help me not be selfish with my gifts, talents, time, or posessions, but help me to give them freely to You who have given them all to me in the first place.

  8. Ben Blakey says:

I love the part where the people are giving so much that Moses has to tell them to stop. I wish we had this problem in our churches today!

And if we do want to see this happen, it starts with us. What is our attitude and mindset towards service? Are we all out to serve as much and as often as we can, or would we rather be served? Let’s all take what God has given us and use it to serve him!

  9. What an encouraging reminder to WORK HARD for the Lord! God has SPECIFIC things for us to do too…in Ephesians 2:10 we read, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”…that means thta God created us to do SPECIFIC good works! Are we using the gifts, the talents, the abilities, our time, our resources, our circumstances and the list goes on, to serve and glorify Him!? Let’s take this example of the Israelites and serve, work, spread the Gospel, and whatever else we may come across with our whole hearts, always working unto the Lord!

  10. Kelsey says:

1 So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the LORD has commanded.”

This is like God has done for us. He has given us each unique talents and we are supposed to use those talents for him. We shoulduse our amazing gifts to help serve him. God has truly blessed us and it is up to use to serve and worship him. We could never serve or worship him enough

  11. Meisha Preston says:

Reading this always reminds me of my time in Israel. In Israel I got to visit an life-size model of the Tabernacle. It was really cool to see what it looked like in real life. Reading the description it is sometimes hard to imagine. Isn’t it awesome that we now have a direct route to God? We don’t have to go through a human high priest. Now our high priest is Christ!

  12. Princess Di says:

The people were bringing so much to God that Moses had to tell them to stop! That encourages me so much…I want to give everything I possibly can to the One I serve. How awesome would it be if the children of God today were giving so much back to Him that people would be saying “stop! we have all we need!” What if we all had that kind of servant’s heart and gave MORE than what was needed? Sadly, there aren’t many people out there who regularly go above and beyond what was asked…especially in our relationship with God. But this encourages me and should encourage you also to give as much as you possibly can in serving the Lord. It should be a wholehearted act in serving and praising God by the way we live.

  13. Trembling from fear of God B says:

5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

I only could really think about this verse all day. I don’t know, it really stood out to me. It just showed how willing they were to serving the Lord, giving their all to finish what God had given them to do. Reminded me of Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

I pray that I may have a servant’s heart and have confidence that God will fulfill everything that He wants us to do. Acts 20:35! :D

  14. Sarah G.! says:

5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

I also liked this verse because it reminded me of how the Lord will always provide!! No matter where we are or what we are doing, God provides us with what is necessary to do the work! We are soo blessed to have such wonderful workers at Compass Bible Church!! Praise God for the people who work diligently in the high school ministry!! :D

  15. M@x says:

That is pretty intense! It’s right down to the smallest detail! God sure is the best architect!! (The evidence is WAAAAY more than the tabernacle, just look at the natural world around you, He designed it all and made it all). If God took the time to pay attention to the details, then it obviously is important. So if He did, so should we. A lot of times i’m lazy and i’ll just do the minimum requirements for something. But that’s not how God does things. He pays attention to the slightest details, no matter how miniscule it still matters in His eyes. So i should do the same. I need to NOT be lazy and actually do everything right, all the way to the small details. This is super important. let’s say you’re building a car. If you don’t take your time and properly fine tune it, or if you are lazy and don’t properly make the smallest pieces that hold the car together, the whole thing will fall apart. That’s why we have to pay attention to the “fine print”. God showed us an example, now let’s go do that.

  16. brandy crane says:

8 All the skilled men among the workmen made the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim worked into them by a skilled craftsman.

9 All the curtains were the same size—twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide.

back in the day it was not an easy task to make cloth… which is also why the Isrealites only had a pair of clothes and if they had several they were considered wealthy!!!! compared to our packed closets! also because they had to make sooo much cloth everyone in the community had to get together and help the cause and to build the tabernacle exactly how God wanted it to be built ;)

    GIRLS WORKSHOP TOMORROW

  17. Jacob Foreman says:

And so the people were restrained from bringing more,

7 because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.

This is awesome to see how giving the Israelites were of their skills, services, and property. They were giving so many offerings it was beginning to just be too much! It really made me think about how I need to be doing more, giving 100%, and focusing myself on serving the Lord and the body of believers always. The Israelites are a great inspiration of hard work and dedication here to the Lord.

  18. Mechell says:

to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more,

I really enjoyed Ben’s comment. I totally agree!

Can you imagine the things our church could do if we had this same attitude? If we were willing to give in every area of our lives6 Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is, we could accomplish some awesome things. It reminds me of the “Fall Fest”, look how we, as a church, were able to serve and reach out to the entire community thru that event. I kept hearing that people were amazed and completely in awe of the fact that everything was free. They never understood that what was free for them was not free for others. It cost people their time, talent, and resources to pull that event off; it was well worth the effort! The secular world can’t understand that kind of giving, it always leaves them with the question, why? Let us continue to serve the Lord in every way, until we are restrained from bringing more.

  19. Mechell : ) says:

Sorry I am not sure how that happened.

  20. Julia Bradley says:

3 They received from Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary. And the people continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning.
4 So all the skilled craftsmen who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left their work
5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

I agree with Beth, how often do pastors have to ask their congregation to stop serving because there is more than enough help? Churches are constantly in need of people who are willing to serve. We need to make service a priority, and offer up our time and talents to God. He is the one that gave them to us in the first place.

  21. Riley Hancock says:

2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.

God you gave me the gift of hardworking make me use that for you and your works. We all have gifts we should give them to you God.YOU ARE KING!!!!

  22. Murphy Danahy says:

4 So all the skilled craftsmen who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left their work

Now this might be and example from the old testament, but it is still a great example of Christian brotherhood. When a brother or sister in CHRIST is in need, we need to band together to help them. This might be in a monetary form, work, or prayer. Nothing is better than a bunch of brothers and sisters working together to help one another and to bring honor and glory to GOD.

  23. Natasha B :) says:

God was specific in details of building the tabernacle. He used these skillful people to build it precisely the way he wanted it. Its the same with us in our lives. God pays attention to every detail of our lives and loves n cares for us, more than we know.

  24. Dan Lauder says:

2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.

I thought it was interesting how the phrase “and who was willing to come and do the work” is tacked on after the LORD had given them ability. If you are a Christian God has given you a special ability to serve God with. The question is, are we willing to work? So many people use their gifts for their own benefit or not at all. All of us should honestly evaluate and ask ourselves, what am I good at? What do I enjoy doing? And how can I use this gift to help people pursue Christ?

  25. laura johnson says:

5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

We too need to do more than what is asked of us, we need to stand out compared to an average person. We’re not ultimately working for our parents, teachers and friends, but ultiimately the Lord. We do need to obey our earthly authorities but we need to obey them because the Lord has told us to. Our standards are set higher than everyone else’s. We need to bring more than what is asked of us to the table, if we do people will recognize that were showing that light that Jesus has called us to do. To show other people how hard we’re working because we want nothing more than to obey Jesus Christ out of love for Him.

  26. Matt Crane says:

I know and have heard that alot of people thinking these chapters are a little boring, but not from the view of worship!

When God told the people to do something and how to do it, these people did something so beautiful! They obeyed!

We need to remember that we cannot worship the Lord the way we want but the way he tells us. Uzza gives us a great example of this… He was carrying the Alter of the Lord and it was falling over and Uzza out of good intentions tries to stop it… He then dropped dead. Someone might ask, “Why did God kill him if he was trying to help?” Its because he did not worship God the way God had told him… Also in first Sammuel Saul is commanded by the Lord to completely destroy a kingdom and leave nothing behind. But Saul rather decides to save some of it to “consecrate it to the Lord” but the Lord rejected him because he did not worship the Lord the way God wanted it.

So let us remember to worship God the way he wants it, pride free in remembrance in Christ with extreme joy!!!

  27. 4 So all the skilled craftsmen who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left their work
5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

I like both of these verses becuase they ALL just suddenly stopped doing their work to serve the Lord with their skills and talents. It showed their priority- not money and work but using their time to glorify God. Great comments everyone on vs.5 They went over and above giving more than what God commanded. their actions reflected their true feelings and what was in their hearts. They really did love God. Great example :)

  28. Cameron says:

5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

this verse is rather suprising considering all of the apostasy that the Israelites show to God and how they turn away from Him. we should be giving the Lord everything that we can to serve Him, just like the Israelites do. however, we need to not follow Israel in their apostasy. but here they are serving the Lord, like we should always do

  29. Crystal C says:

2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.

It’s so cool how God gave the people specific details and measurements on how to build the tabernacle. Like everyone else said, this verse shows how God gives everyone a certain ability. We should use the abilities he gave us to do work for him and obey him.

  30. Alison says:

6 Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more,
7 because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.

If only that was a problem today! That the church would have to tell the people to STOP bringing offerings to the Lord because it already had more than enough! I pray that God gives me a heart that overflows with generosity like that :]

  31. Jenae Nae (from fresno) says:

1 So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the LORD has commanded.”

These people were using their talents and gifts from God to help him out and this is exactly how we should be; God gives us all special gifts and we should use them, pleasing God and obeying him.

  32. Alex Mishreki says:

5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

Wow! The people were overflowing with their work for the Lord! That reminds me of Romans 12:11 “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor serving the Lord.” That’s totally what these people did! They were zealous to do the work of the Lord, and as a result, they did “too much” of it! Do we have that attitude today? That we’re so eager to obey the Lord’s commands that we come to the point of “over-obediance”? Let’s live out Romans 12:11 just like the people in Bible times!

  33. Spencer Camp says:

I thought that it was amazing that the Israelites were over generous in giving that they had to be told to stop. Their hearts were truly pointed toward the Lord, giving them an amazing joy in philanthropy.

  34. kelly causky says:

WOw. Our obedience to the Lord has to be more than mindless duties. We have to work hard to obey God’s full commandments as these people did. The instructions they had and followed were detailed and precise. God gives us precise duties in the New Testament of our Bible’s, so let’s work hard and read our Bibles and obey!

  35. Dan Blankenship says:

    Exodus 36

God has gifted every Christian with talents. He wants us to use our skillz not just keep them hidden for selfish reasons. If your teacher told you that you had to go to the final exam to graduate wouldn’t you go and apply the skills that you learned so you would graduate? Christians sometimes hide their skillz because they know that it is going to cost them (Time & Energy). If we fail to use the talents that God has given us than we have failed Him.

2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.

The Holy Spirit gives us the ability and willingness thru wisdom to serve Him for His glory alone and not ours. It is awesome that only thru God do we have the ability and a willingness to serve Him. I hope to see True North represent this weekend at the Ministry Fair.

  36. Christy Beymer says:

I think its amazing how Moses stopped the working people because they had given enough to God! This verse is so encouraging as i picture all these people just as one big family serving God. I want to strive to like these people and just keep giving and giving!!!

  37. Brad says:

This chapter is a greAt reminder that our service to the Lord is to be done with excellence.

  38. Katie Slusher says:

5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done.”

The Israelites continued to bring things to build the tabernacle and had to be told to stop because they had more than they needed! Wow, what a picture an amazing picture of obedience. The Lord commanded them to bring their gifts, abilities, and possessions to serve Him and they responded with obedience. I pray that our responses to God’s instructions would be similar and He would have to tell us to stop because of our complete obedience.

  39. I also enjoyed verse 5…. It is so uber legit that one can give so much to God that they are told to stop! I wan’t to be living my life in that way

  40. Rebekah Foreman says:

2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work

This shows that God gave them these abilities for His Glory so that the people could obey God and use the talents for Him. This is truly amazing how God thought about the skills and ablities to give each and everyone so He could be glorified.

  41. Cody Nord says:

Love how there was such an outpouring of gifts that Moses pretty much said, “Thanks but we are good” and notice how the people were “restrained” from bringing gifts. So its like the people weren’t doing it out of a “I was told to so i better” mindset. They were doing it to glorify the Lord. If only our love for the Lord was like that in all parts of our life.
