Exodus 22

22:1  “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. He shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. If the stolen beast is found alive in his possession, whether it is an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall pay double.

“If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, or lets his beast loose and it feeds in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best in his own field and in his own vineyard.

“If fire breaks out and catches in thorns so that the stacked grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he who started the fire shall make full restitution.

“If a man gives to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from the man’s house, then, if the thief is found, he shall pay double. If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God to show whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor’s property. For every breach of trust, whether it is for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for a cloak, or for any kind of lost thing, of which one says, ‘This is it,’ the case of both parties shall come before God. The one whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.

10 “If a man gives to his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep safe, and it dies or is injured or is driven away, without anyone seeing it, 11 an oath by the Lord shall be between them both to see whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor’s property. The owner shall accept the oath, and he shall not make restitution. 12 But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 13 If it is torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not make restitution for what has been torn.

14 “If a man borrows anything of his neighbor, and it is injured or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution. 15 If the owner was with it, he shall not make restitution; if it was hired, it came for its hiring fee.

Laws About Social Justice

16 “If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the bride-price for virgins.

18 “You shall not permit a sorceress to live.

19 “Whoever lies with an animal shall be put to death.

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god, other than the Lord alone, shall be devoted to destruction.

21 “You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 22 You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. 23 If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, 24 and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.

25 “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. 26 If ever you take your neighbor’s cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, 27 for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

28 “You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people.

29 “You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me. 30 You shall do the same with your oxen and with your sheep: seven days it shall be with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.

31 “You shall be consecrated to me. Therefore you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs. (ESV)

21 “Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.

“For you were aliens in Egypt.” Wow. This is a very cool verse. The Isrealites were probably not too friendly to the Egyptians. But here God tells them that they are to treat them properly and not harm them. Why would He tell them that? Because the Isrealites were once the ones in a foriegn land. The Egyptians treated them horribly wrong, and the Isrealites all saw what happened to them. This can also apply to us. We shouldn’t mistreat others, because someday we’ll be the ones in the position that the people we are mistreating are in. Acts 20:35 says, “By working hard in this manner you must help the weak, remembering that it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Hebrews 13:2 says,“Do not neglect to welcome strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another as brothers; outdo one another in showing honor.” All of these verses tell us why we need to treat others right. It doesn’t matter if they are foriegn, our neighbors, or our enimies, we have to treat them all the way God wants us to treat them, which is with respect and love.

  2. Adam Duarte says:

19 “Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death.
20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.
21 “Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.
22 “Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.
23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

One of the problems in our society these days is that nobody fears God. People go around doing the most heinous, immoral things, and they live their lives that way as if it’s never going to come back and bite them in the end. But God is just and will judge them for all of that which they have done against him – it makes me glad that we’re living to please Him and won’t have to face that kind of judgment!

  3. James Purington says:

These verses are saying that we need to abide by God’s laws because they are His laws. These laws are to prevent chaos and bring order and are there for our own good. We need to follow them.

  4. Jacob Decker says:

1 “These are the laws you are to set before them:

This is a continuation of God’s laws for the Israelites. It is important to follow His word and obey His law just as the Israelites are commanded to do. Hopefully, with all the mayhem happening in today’s world, us Christians can turn it around one step at a time. With God, nothing is impossible.

  5. PaYtOn :] says:

1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

If we steal something from another brother we need to pay back more than what we took. We have sinned against God and Jesus Christ died for us and payed all of the price that we need to pay to God. And if somehig is taken from us we should be not rude but merciful.

    ***love your neighbor as yourself***

  6. 28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

This is a great verse, because we easily do what this verse says not to! We know that people get caught up in talking very bad about our rulers and the president… But when we hear don’t blaspheme we can easily think to ourselves “I don’t do that.” However, I looked up “blaspheme” and it means “to speak irreverently of; evil of; slander.” Do we ever accuse Him of not helping us or not coming through for us, we doubt that He is good?–This is blaspheming Him!

  7. Kyle Johnson (kJ) says:

1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

There are a lot of strict laws in the last two chapters we read, not as intense as yesterday, but still. God really wants us to obey Him, so we need to focus on that!

  8. This is again more of a reminder that we need to obey God’s commands!! We HAVE to strive to live holy lives, set apart for Him. God takes obedience to Him VERY VERY seriously…and we need to as well.

  9. Ben Blakey says:

I love how verses 22-24 shows us the heart of God. He widows and orphans! He cares for those who cannot care for themselves. And if we stop long enough to think about it, we should be grateful for how God has cared for us, both physically and spiritually! And if we want to be like our heavenly Father, we should also express care for those who cannot care for themselves.

  10. Nick Pifer says:

These laws were critical for Israel to operate in God’s theocracy, and even later under the monarchy of different kings.

You should be prepared to answer the skeptical critic or atheist that will ask why these laws aren’t followed, but other laws (10 commandments – minus sabbath) are.

  11. Kelsey says:

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

These verses show the power of God’s wrath. They also show how important it is to keep his commands. We need to take the seriously. We know that God takes them very seriously, and we will be judged on how we keep his law. Even though it seems like it is far away, these verses remind us of how important it really is to keep and respect his commands.

  12. Jacob Foreman says:

22 “Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

These verses show God’s love towards everybody and the sympathy He has for those who have to go throw what would seem unjust and not fair. God wants to protect the widow and orphan from a society that might exploit them. God listens to prayers and He takes action on them, so He will be there to help these widows and orphans.

God wants to protect His people!

  13. Missy says:

I like how in this chapter God just gives some basic laws to live by. A lot of the laws from the old testament are still in effect in our legal system today. They seem like common sense, but people don’t live by common sense anymore – maybe they never did. God gave us rules so that we could have justice and security in society. Whenever society departs from God’s laws (except maybe the ones that were specifically to show the Jews as separate to God), it starts to fall apart. I think we can clearly see that in our society today. Even though sometimes laws seem like restrictions on our lives, they are really for our good.

  14. John Karlsson says:

19 “Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death.

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

God is a holy and separate from Sin. God is a perfectly just and it please him to punish sinners for their sin. Don’t be caught in the hands of an Angry God.

  15. Ray Burke (word it up)... says:

    Love and be gorra.

Although alot of these rules and regulations seem outdated they still apply to our lives today (just different stuff) and are as important now as when they were penned.

God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

  16. Angela Voris says:

21 “Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.

This really says to not throw others aside. you might look at someone and think there different and not want to be around them. But really none of us are the same so we cant cast out others as if they are aliens but help them up.

  17. Jasmine Douglas says:

31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.

God called the Israelites to live a life set apart. This impacted every area of their life, including where they got their meat from. God has set rules for his people and we are to obey each and every one of them. There are no exceptions. Let’s live for God alone and follow his instructions for our lives.

  18. Beth Lauder says:

29 “Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats. “You must give me the firstborn of your sons. 30 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.

God desires our very best when we give Him an offering. Our offerings do not look like the ones the Israelites made with their grains and animals, but ours are with our money, time and resources. That means that if we are giving to God financially we must be sure to give Him the FIRST portion of our paychecks. It is wrong to pay our bills and spend money on pleasurable things and give to God what we have left over. In the same regard we must not spend our day doing things that please us and give God the last few minutes of our day as an afterthought. We should all give God the very best of all we have since He did not spare His only Son to reconcile us to Himself!

  19. Dan Lauder says:

Once again I am struck by how much God values restitution and payment back to the offended party. God is just.

The problem that mankind has is that we have all offended God by not loving Him first and foremost and we haven’t carried out his commands. Instead of living our lives for him we have all at one time lived it for ourselves. We have all SINNED and owe God a lot of payment back. The problem is that we are all spritually bankrupt and can’t even come close to paying God back for the wrong we have done, no matter how much good we do. That is why Christ had to die for our sins. He payed the costly price for us and cancelled our debt. In response we should live a life of gratitude back to God and give him the thanks and devotion he deserves. Not because we are trying to earn his approval or work our way to heaven, but because we respect the costly price it took to make us right with him and we are thankful for what he has done.

“And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” 2 Corin 5:15

  20. Kaitlyn says:

Just like the last chapter, here, we see more commands from God. Again, this emphasizes how much God truly cares about us obeying Him. He takes it seriously. We are IN this world but not OF it so we need to be set apart by obeying what God commands us to do and glorifying His name. Maranatha!

  21. Trembling from fear of God B says:

YES I’M BACK ON! IT’S SO GREAT TO BE BACK ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :DDD

There’s so many things you can take from this chapter but something that my friend Jane reminded me of today when we were praying at lunch. Like many of you have said, God calls us to love everyone, just as yourself. So “aliens”, like the Egyptians were, should be treated nicely and just like they were your best friend. One way we can show love for others is by praying for them. Prayer is a HUGE way you can help someone out, especially right now in this economy where a lot of people are suffering because of it. Pray for those that have lost their jobs and that they will trust that God will provide for them. maybe these hard times will help them turn to repentance and faith! :D

  22. Gabriel Voris says:

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

This just goes to show us how seriously God takes His commands. He says we will be put to death by the sword. Still, even though we see how seriously God takes his commands, many people still show no fear of Him. They instead just blow Him off and it is so sad to see this happening.

  23. Brandy Crane says:

3 but if it happens after sunrise, he is guilty of bloodshed. “A thief must certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for his theft.

all through this chapter we see examples of restitution- which is making wrongs right. like if a man stole an animal he had to repay double the animals market value back then. If we do something wrong to someone we know we should go beyond the expectations of making things right. doing this can help ease any pain we have caused our friend, help them be more forgiving towards us and it will make us think about it before we ever do it again. =)

oh by the way senior search is on the 21st not this weekend like so many think….

  24. Sarah G.! says:

28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

Like what fabulous Christa said, this verse also reminded me of how people curse our president!! It reminded me also of how i sometimes don’t speak very highly of our president either… we need to be showing respect for him, and we need to be praying for him as well!! After all, God knew all along that Obama was going to be elected we just need to trust in God’s plan for this country! :D

  25. tyler M says:

24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

Adam, I totally agree with you. No one now is fearing God Back in the days of the Israelites, whenever anyone would defy one of these laws, every one would fear the LORD and make things right and do the consequences, whether it be paying or retribution. But now, people break these laws probably daily and they don’t even care and think they got away clean.

28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

Great verse. First, it tells us to “not blaspheme God” (which we should all know not to do), but the second part says “or curse the ruler of your people.” because God is telling us HE is the ruler of us and that we shouldn’t curse him or go against him.

  26. Allen McAnlis says:

This chapter is very critical to God’s chosen people. By abiding to these rules, they were made to be set apart from the rest of the world. This also shows both God’s compassion and his anger towards sin. Though He hears those who cry out to Him, He will not pause to punish those who wrong Him or His people.

  27. Brad says:

God is a judge who administers justice perfectly. These laws for the Israelites are a reflection of that.

  28. Mike says:

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

This is happening in Orange County – and possibly even in our own lives – every day. While you will not see people building altars to statues anymore, it is obvious that most people, including “Christians”, give the best of what they have – their time, money, conversation, etc. – to things of this world instead of to God. And this is a form of idolatry. Whenever we make compromises, such as not doing our Bible study or praying, we are saying that whatever else we do is more important to us than the things of God – and He promises that people who do such things will be destroyed. We need to make sure that we are devoting the best of our time to the Lord, not doing our bible study when we are tired and if we have time, for example, but making it the number one priority in our daily routines!

  29. Riley Hancock says:

28 “Do not blaspheme God.” Amen I wish everyone on my Volleyball team would stop using God’s name in vain thay say it every time they mess up.

  30. Jasmine Wonton says:

22 “Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.
23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
I like this verse because God really cares for those who lost someone and are hurting. God makes up for that place or whole in your heart. He is our Father and genuinely loves us and it says that he hears their cry.

28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.
Too many times I hear people blaspheming God or His son it makes me really sad that they don’t even treat the creator of the universe with respect. Another problem I see is that a lot of people curse authority figures. Even though we don’t like them, we shouldn’t curse them and make rude comments about them because they are in authority for a reason and God puts people in authority for His own purpose (Romans 13)

29 “Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats. “You must give me the firstborn of your sons.
I feel bad because sometimes I know i should tithe but i hold back my money and then i don’t give it to God and i buy something pointless like gum which is gone in like 5 minutes. and when i do tithe i don’t even miss that money and i know it’s going to God not my wordly wants

  31. Spencer Camp says:

Again in this chapter emphasis is put upon justice. If someone breaks the law, they are guilty and must pay restitution or be killed. This reminds me of the grace of God, and the atoning sacrifice that Jesus was for us on the cross. We all from birth are law breakers, for all have sinned and should be held according to that. We deserve death for our sin against God if we are under the law, which we aren’t. We, by faith, are considered righteous before God, through Christ Jesus. God overlooked our sin for a while, but it was all paid for on the cross. I am amazed at the loving grace of God, that he would kill his son so that we could be at peace with God. Exodus is awesome!

  32. Beth Williams says:

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

I agree here that it is comforting to know that God hears us. Also, I think it is much better to be on God’s side than against Him. I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of God’s anger!

  33. Snowmann says:

18 “Do not allow a sorceress to live.

I FUULLY AGREEE!!!!!! anyone want to go palm reader hunting with me???………wheres my gun?? hahaha God will surely strike them down. Pray for their salvation!!!

  34. Nachooooooooooo says:

This is an interesting chapter. Lots of great rules. God is so clear about not letting the evil live. He doesnt want His people to be influenced by them. “Bad company corrupts good character.” We need to be sure the people we hang out with are not causing us to stray from God.

  35. laura johnson says:

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

How awesome is that, that we have the creator of everything and the most caring person ever helping us. No struggle of ours will ever be to hard for God to help guide us through. If we ask for His help, He will forsure hear us and help us.

  36. 20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

    I totally agree with Mike!
We should be putting God number one and not letting anything else get to the top, which would be considered an idol! Many people are so wrapped up in worldy things, that they are heading down the path of destruction! We need to keep our eyes fixed on The Lord always!

  37. Wesley Wong says:

9 In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, ‘This is mine,’ both parties are to bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges declare guilty must pay back double to his neighbor.

In Exodus 22:9, the Bible states that a judge will decide whose animal it belongs to if there ever is an argument about it. God is just and will not punish the innocent. He is giving wisdom to the judge to make the decision who is guilty and has to pay to consequences. God gives us an example of this in 1 Kings 3:16-28 when Solomon uses God’s gift of wisdom to decide which of the two mothers the baby really belonged too. This shows that God is just and all-knowing:]]

  38. Haley Litz says:

Great comment Christa!!! I never thought of that before. The more of the Old Testament I read the more I see who God is and this book shows so clearly His Holiness and His hate for sin; He can’t be around it! God is also Just which is another attribute I am seeing of Him in this chapter! I love the Old Testament, it is revealing to me God’s attributes and how He was then, is, and always will be!!!!

  39. kJ says:

    good comments you guys!

  40. Cameron says:

as we look at the Old Testament and especially these laws that Moses lays out, it is easy for us to say “wow this is wierd” or “what? God killed people for that?!?!” what we really need to understand is the broad context. God ‘s people are to be set apart, and these laws are to teach them to not uphold to heathen worship and practices. also, God was teaching them to obey Him, no matter how silly they thought that the laws were

  41. It's Daniel Yo! says:

1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

This is how we should apologize. We should feel guilt about our sin that causes us to take action, like this

  42. Derek Brower says:

Ya Brad! Our God is an awesome judge who we all will one day face and be held accountable for what we have done here on this earth!!! Lets live by His commandments daily and not stray from His word!!!

  43. Shelby CST :) says:

22 “Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.
23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

This command stood out to me because it shows Gods compassion and love. Our God is an awesome and loving God!

Love all the comments :) CST!

  44. cristina brower says:

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

LOVE this chapter, and this verse! i love how God is always there for us whenever we need him, and He will always answer our prayers or our cry when we call out to Him!

    CTS :)

  45. kelly causky CST says:

I am so grateful that Jesus came and died for all of our sins! If the world cannot even accept the free grace God has given us through his son, then think how many less people would accept and follow these laws. Praise the Lord for the New Covenant, his promise to return!

  46. skyler dogg says:

This chapter is another great one just like chapter 21. God is laying down the law and if you btreak the rules you should be punished for that sin. Great chapter I’m tired and going to bed.

  47. Julia Bradley says:

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

This is a bold statement…and Orange County is in trouble. It’s so sad to see co-workers sacrifice so much for their god: money. It’s their motivation and unfulfilling “reward.” We are to sacrice only to God. Worship Him alone.

  48. Daniel's Momma is BACK Yo!! says:

The theme that stood out to me was the theme of restitution. If we wrong someone, it is not good enough to ‘appologize’. It is important to take action in striving to make up for what we have done. God is JUST! He wants us to be ‘just’ as well.

  49. Katie Slusher says:

31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.

The purposes of these laws is so that the Israelites would be set apart as God’s people. They had these strict rules so that their actions would be different from their pagan neighbors around them. Although many of these laws do not apply to us today, does our lives reflect this same calling, set apart for God? Are we holy people who reflect God’s holiness by our actions?

  50. Jenae Naee (= says:

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

I love this verse. If God’s children cry out to him, he will hear us. Its awesome to have that promise and to know that we have such a great and compassionate God!

  51. Natasha B :) says:

Restitution–noun 1. reparation made by giving an equivalent or compensation for loss, damage, or injury caused; indemnification.
    2. the restoration of property or rights previously taken away, conveyed, or surrendered.
    3. restoration to the former or original state or position.

**Just thought i wanted to clarify what restitutiion means XD**

24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless

Wow! Kill us with a sword…. thats nothing to fear right? You don’t want to make God angry. In our daily lives this is a good reminder that we totallly need to fear God. And respect the commands that he gives us wheather it would be many years ago or today because God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow never changing. Im so glad to be in the body of christ!

  52. Mechell C.S.T :) says:

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

I agree with you Julia! Watching the daily sacrifice to the god of money is a sad sight to see. God alone deserves our total devotion. Like mike said earlier, we need to stop compromising and start making God our number one priority!

    11:43 pm…Yes I made it!

  53. Pastor Bobby says:

Wow! It is encouraging to see this many comments here on a Friday night! Booyah spiritual warfare!

31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.

I think we completely underestimate how much God wants us to be holy! And how he is going to give us consequences if we are not.

I am preaching in the main service this weekend about a very serious subject where God is calling us to be “Sanctified Saints.” My bro, Ben Blakey, will be preaching at True North so be ready for a great sermon!

  54. Evan McKee says:

10 “If a man gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to his neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking,

11 the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before the LORD that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person’s property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required.

The fact that their isn’t any proof needed for the neighbor that guarded the donkey is amazing. these people have seen what the Lord can do and probably feared him so much that they would never take a false oath before the Lord. The fear of the Lord should keep us doing the right things as well.

  55. A boy named David says:

If there is one thing to be learned throughout exodus and the OT is that God takes sin seriously. We can be like wow why would God punish them like that but then we have to remember all the mercy he has shown in not destroying them for all the other sins.

  56. Diana says:

28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

I think this is one of the things that Christians are most hypocritical about. How many people do you hear saying “oh my God” in one day, and out of all the Christians you know, how many of them still say that? Because of my fortunate upbringing I have been trained to not say that unless it’s literally calling out to God (although I’m totally guilty of saying that in my head :/)…but I’m constantly around people using my God’s name in vain (it drives me nuts). Also, like Christa brought up, we can’t blaspheme our rulers either! So many people say such bad things about the people in power over us, like the President. We need to remember that no matter what, God put Him there for a reason, and He’s told us not to curse the rulers that HE has given us.

  57. Dan Blankenship says:

    Exodus 22

31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.

God’s laws give us the direction needed to become holy. We need to follow all of Gods laws so that we may be set apart from any uncleanness.

  58. Cody Nord says:

26 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it to him by sunset,

27 because his cloak is the only covering he has for his body. What else will he sleep in? When he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

Even though all these laws are strict and hard on people who break the rules we also know his compassion. This verse shows that when we cry out for help God WILL be there. As long as we follow his laws (which we can’t so we have Jesus to help cover our sins) then he will hear our pleas and help us. Reminds me of how God listens to the prayers of the righteous.

  59. Ryan Damato says:

I’m interested in comparing this chapter with the practices of today. God demanding honesty and trust as described in this chapter. If people are truthful and honest, our culture should work. Since we have totally thrashed this principal, we have become witnesses of a society that is run by whoever has the best lawyer or whoever can be more deceitful. My prayer is that more people would read these early writings and that they would understand that if we were to all live as God commands, our world would be incredible different. The great thing is, we have a promise from God that in the end, some of us will experience this for eternity and, many more need to understand that this world is as good as it will ever get.

  60. Rebekah Foreman KEEP DOING SOTD says:

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

God is the only one who should be offered sacrifices for no one compares to God.

  61. Mandi ;) says:

31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs

I love this verse because it reminds me of the close personal relationship that I have with him. He is commanding me not to eat something that is unworthy of His people and he wants to give us the best that we deserve. We are all sinners, but we repent to cleanse our hearts to be worthy to Jesus.
