Exodus 21

Laws About Slaves

21:1 “Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.

“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has broken faith with her. If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her as with a daughter. 10 If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights. 11 And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

12 “Whoever strikes a man so that he dies shall be put to death. 13 But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. 14 But if a man willfully attacks another to kill him by cunning, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.

15 “Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death.

16 “Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.

17 “Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.

18 “When men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist and the man does not die but takes to his bed, 19 then if the man rises again and walks outdoors with his staff, he who struck him shall be clear; only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall have him thoroughly healed.

20 “When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. 21 But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.

22 “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

26 “When a man strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys it, he shall let the slave go free because of his eye. 27 If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he shall let the slave go free because of his tooth.

28 “When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox shall be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner of the ox shall not be liable. 29 But if the ox has been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has been warned but has not kept it in, and it kills a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death. 30 If a ransom is imposed on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is imposed on him. 31 If it gores a man’s son or daughter, he shall be dealt with according to this same rule. 32 If the ox gores a slave, male or female, the owner shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

Laws About Restitution

33 “When a man opens a pit, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it, 34 the owner of the pit shall make restoration. He shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast shall be his.

35 “When one man’s ox butts another’s, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live ox and share its price, and the dead beast also they shall share. 36 Or if it is known that the ox has been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has not kept it in, he shall repay ox for ox, and the dead beast shall be his. 1. 8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her.

The first part of this verse stood out…. “If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself.” It made me think, that we are slaves to The Lord, and he is our master! We need to be pleasing him daily & prasing him everyday! God deserves everything from us, and we need to be willing to sacrifice anything and everything for him!

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

I like this verse also, because God really takes it seriously how we treat our parents. We need to obey them in all we do! Parents do so much, yet we are still rude back! We just need to have the giving mindset & know that when we obey and listen to our parents & do what they ask us to do, that we are pleasing God by doing so.

  2. M@x says:

23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,

Hm… In my English class we are having to debate on some topics, and i chose to argue against abortion. This verse couldn’t have been any better for that cause! God says clearly that if anyone kills a baby before it’s born, he or she has to be put to death. While we are babies in the womb, God is shaping and forming us. He makes us unique and special. And even though we weren’t born yet, we were still human and we still mattered to God. That’s why it’s wrong. I thought that verse was cool, especially since i’m debating that in class.

  3. Adam Duarte says:

All of these laws set before the Israelites – this reminds me of what we were talking about last night at small groups, how God set his laws before the Israelites to make them separate and unique, such as “Don’t eat this”, etc. Although they’re still basic laws that we integrate in our society today – such as the penalty for murder. And people think our desire for morality comes from animals?

  4. John Dogg says:

36 However, if it was known that the bull had the habit of goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up, the owner must pay, animal for animal, and the dead animal will be his.

You guys need to make sure you keep your wild violent goring bulls locked up in a government approved pen. Its been a bit of problem lately here at True North.
Seriously though I like this verse because it shows that God expects us to be responsible with our possessions and the things we own. We hear a lot about pit bulls mauling kids in the neighborhoods. Its actually a common occurence. The pit bull owner sometimes will get arrested especially if the pit bull has a history of biting people. We need to always be thinking of others and putting others first. Remember our actions always affect others and we need to be considerate and mindful of what can happen to others if we don’t pay attention. For example many of your a driving cars now. That is a really great thing its an awesome privilege! But it come with great responsibility. Driving can easily become a nightmare, especially if you hit a pedestrian or hit a van full of school children. so just be sure to keep your bulls penned!

  5. Jacob Decker says:

1 “These are the laws you are to set before them:

Wow, well some of these laws are very interesting as some others are seem costly, and some are important. Also, some of these laws, if put into affect, could go against some of the people in today’s modern world. Of course, not pertaining to some with cattle or other out of ordinary laws. All these laws are towards the Israelites which will make each one alert and focused on doing the right thing.

  6. Old man new heart, thankful for a just and loving God says:

Ex 21:15 “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.

Hmmm… Right after telling us about honoring your father and mother in Chapter 20, God comes back and lays out the penalty for not doing what he says. Makes the penalty for attacking your parent the same as for killing babies… Guess He’s serious about that ‘honoring’ thing… How does this apply to us today?

  7. Beth Lauder says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Yikes! This verse makes it clear that the Lord detests it when we are disrespectful to our parents. Just because we are not bound by the Levitical Law anymore does not mean that we have the freedom to treat our parents badly. Ephesians 6:1-3 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’ — which is the first commandment with a promise — ‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.’” God makes it clear that there is a blessing involved when we obey our parents. If we chose to sin and rebel against our parents then we are outside of God’s circle of blessing and will face the consequences for our sin. We must remember that we are obeying our parents because God asks us to and when we do this it honors Him.

  8. 17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

I gotta piggy back on this idea…God takes it SO seriously honoring and obeying our parents. Thanks to Christ’s blood we are forgiven but we need to start taking this just as seriously as those in the OT. As Beth mentioned Deuteronomy 5:16 says, “Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Lets strive for this!!! We need to treat our parents the same way we treat our teachers, pastors, and other authorities in our lives!

  9. Pastor Bobby says:

Wow! I was encouraged to see so many comments on the 10 commandments yesterday! Check them out!

I think this chapter is a powerful example of why we should listen to what God says. Think about how seriously he must take his commands if the penalty for disobeying them is death!

Let’s live for God today like our life is on the line!

  10. Meisha Preston says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.”

Wow…think of what the world would look like if all teenagers lived by this or this was actually enforced! God cares how we treat our parents. It is hypocritical to say you love God but don’t respect your parents or obey them. Exodus is such a great reminder of how holy God is and how seriously he takes sin!

  11. Dan Lauder says:

God is just (Deut 32:4) and this chapter illustrates that God values justice among his people. Justice means the correct compensation for actions. It means that when there is an offense, accounts must be settled. If God values justice we should too.

  12. Ella says:

12 “Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death. ”
Harsh, but its just. Just like the do not murder commandment.

  13. PaYtOn :] says:

30 However, if payment is demanded of him, he may redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded.

Jesus payed the price for us, so (like toy story) we should be “eternally grateful” :) We can treat others the way Jesus treats us and pay it forward. If some one asks something of us we should reply, with open hands for we are servants of the LORD. :]

***REMEMBER to love one another, for CHRIST loved us 1st***

  14. Brandy Crane says:

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise

when i first read those two verses i thought that’s against the Bible and it’s in the Bible. You can’t take revenge on people God is just and He will take care of it. so then i realized what it was really about!

the rule “eye for eye” was used by the judges back in the day. Meaning for the crimes you commit there will be an equal and fit punishment. A punishment to cruel is unfair while on the other hand one to light is going to teach nothing. This came about because in ancient countries they would do cruel punishment for there crimes and it was not right. We learn from Jesus to not retaliate in Matthew5:38-48.

so these verses are not to be taken into consideration with relationships, friendships, or with your family. we are not to justify revenge.

  15. tyler M says:

5 “But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’
6 then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.

These verses stuck out to me. This is like when we first become christians; we have the chance to be free (not really, but live in sin) or we can stay with our master, God. Also, even though were not pierced in the ear with an awl, but basically are marked as belonging to God and we become his servant for life (hopefully for all of us).
Also, agreeing with Bobby, we should be listening and following God’s commands because if you look at the punishment for most of these laws, it’s death! (that doesn’t sound to good)

  16. Kaitlyn says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Wow this is intense! Anyone who disobeys his parents must be put to DEATH! This verse shows us how seriously God takes this. In this world, teenagers tend to “forget” that parents are their authorities and they need to obey and honor them. As Christians, we need to be the light in this dark world and get out and tell all the teenagers we know that obeying their parents is not optional. It is a command from God! As Christians, if we obey our parents, we are pleasing God and bringing Him glory! : )

  17. 13 However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate.

I like that phrase speaking of God’s sovereign reign over all things!–”…but God lets it happen.” Even if something is an “accident” God has allowed it to happen. Nothing happens outside God’s authority!

  18. Riley Hancock says:

14 But if a man schemes and kills another man deliberately, take him away from my altar and put him to death.

15 “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.

16 “Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death.

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

20 “If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished,

Now why can you beat you slave to death with a rod and only get punished when you do every thing else up above and get put to death.

  19. Chelseaaaa says:

I agree with my brother, riley good point. Why are slaves considered less if all people are created equal…. hummm *ponders*

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

how many of us have one time or another cursed our father and mother. Its scary to see the punishment God deems rightful.

  20. Cameron Baxter says:

23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

these verses are definitely not calling for retaliation, rather, we need to understand that in this context Moses is talking about how the punishments for crimes need to be fair, for God loves justice. this ensures that no extreme punishment is given, and also that no lesser punishment is giving. Christ teaches that we need to do the opposite of this (not in a legal sense) when dealing with others sin against us. we as Christians should forgive no matter what, and we need to turn the other cheek.

  21. Mechell C.S.T :) says:

If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights.

This verse reminded me of when we were back in Genesis, reading about Jacob. As we all know, Jacob really loved Rachel but he was tricked into marrying Leah. When Jacob later took Rachel as a wife, he still took care of Leah and fulfilled her marital rights. It is wonderful to see that within “the rules” God is really protecting His people. God’s rules protect both our relationship with Him, and with others. I hope we can remember this the next time we are tempted to break them.

12 “Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death.
13 However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate.

This reminds me of our laws or death penalty we have today. If a man intentionally kills another man, than they be put in life sentance. Christa I like your comment and I agree that God let’s things happen.

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

God really cares about how we treat our parents, people would be put to death if they cursed their parents, that’s intense. God takes it seriously so let’s act like we have that same type of judging today!

23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

I agree with everyone else, this is not telling us to get revenge. This is a law and it was their judging back then.

  23. Ooopss, forgot to put the link to my blog, so here it is!

  24. Jasmine Douglas says:

13 However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate.

Christa I agree with you! “Accidents” happen all the time but it’s all under God’s control. When people go through these hard times where they maybe lose a family member or a friend, they immediately question God and think it’s not fair. But let’s remember that God is indeed sovereign and he planned everything in our lives! We should find rest in that =)

  25. Gabriel Voris says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Still today we treat our parents badly and disrespect them. Here it shows us how much God cares about how we treat our parents. We need to treat them with respect because God asks us to treat the well and they are our elders. We need to obey them and listen to what they tell us even if we do not want to do what they say.

  26. Janiel V (C.S.T) says:

this chapter is all about paying for stuff we broke. we dont really deserve any mercy but God lays out all this rules just so that we can go the narrow road. Jesus paid for our sins with his life, but that doesnt give us an excuse to go around doing bad things~it is NOT a free pass. it means that God expects more from us.

    CST!!

  27. jeff says:

That is a great chapter. I think it is so cool that God gives us all those different scenarios and what to do if it hapens. It was interesting that so many of those scenarios said to put the person to death. God definetly doesn’t think it is ok- if the punishment is death. So let’s not do them.

  28. Cody Nord says:

23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

Just think that if not for Jesus then this would be happening to us. Every sin we comitted, every mistake we made would be paid back to us in full and more. God is not some old grandfather who we like when its just him and us but when our friends walk by we pretend not to know him. We should fear the Lord’s anger but rejoice in his grace.

  29. Brad says:

    These are the laws…

Obedience is important and wise. It was stressed in the OT too.

  30. Beth Williams says:

I am suprised that it seemed like nearly all the punishments were death. God takes sin seriously! If God is telling people to deal out punishments like these, it is intense to think about how much more God punished unrepentant people in hell.

  31. 17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.
woww that just tells you God is pretty serious about this kind of stuff
thats why we should obey our parents and God at all times!

  32. Spencer Camp says:

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

In God’s law true payment is required for sin. As Dan said God highly values justice, because it is another of His perfect and holy attributes. Justice calls for punishment to be equal to the crime. After we realize this we should hold a high view of God’s justice, for it is part of his perfection. But we must not carry out justice for ourselves because that is God’s job. It says in Romans 12:19: “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.” as we see here we must not repay anyone evil for evil, but instead with blessing.

  33. Shelby CST :) says:

Wow this was a cool chapter to read. Some of this was very new to me that I had never read about.

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

This verse really stood out to me. I know sometimes I overlook how important it is to respect my parents but clearly in the Bible it show how important this is.

    CST!!!

  34. Snowmann says:

12 “Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death.
13 However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate.
14 But if a man schemes and kills another man deliberately, take him away from my altar and put him to death.

See Our God is a Just God. He agrees with Capitol Punishment!!! REINSTATE CAPITOL PUNISHMENT!!!!!!!! God is Just, He wil not let any sin go unpuniished. at the hands of man a person may die, but at the hand of God his soul will die (hell) yikes!!!!

  35. Alison says:

Well the Old Testament sure gives a lot of support for capital punishment… I’m not sure how much of that would apply today since in the New Testament Jesus brought in the “turn the other cheek” thing but one thing’s for sure: God’s just in His retribution, we don’t need to doubt it!

  36. kelly causky says:

Woah. God really takes sin seriously. We should not live with sin every day in our lives without really guilty or repentant. God clearly hates sin, so we should love him by avoiding it.

  37. 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

at first i didn’t really get this verse because i thought it contradicted the verse in matthew where Jesus says to turn the other cheek. but after talking to some ppl and reading a commentary, i finally understand it. it’s talking about a court of law. i thought of this today because it really bugged me until i read that. like if someone murders a person they can get the death penalty. i think that’s kind of a simliar concept. I’m also really glad Jesus came to overwrite those laws. a lot of the punishments are pretty severe but just.

  38. Laura Johnson says:

17″Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Wow if they really killed kids for being disrespectful to their parents now days there would be practically no one left. We have to remember that God gave us the parents that we have to help keep us in order here on earth. God obviously is our head authority to obey but next is our parents. We might not always agree with them but most of the time they know what’s best for us.

  39. Luke Melrose!!!!!! says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death

have you ever said ANYTHING bad about your parents? You would be dead by now if you lived during this time. I think we can all honestly say that we would all be put to death. We have all said at least one bad thing about our parents. We need to realize that when we do this, in God’s eyes, it is not to be taken lightly. In todays generation there is almost no respect for parents. We need to change our attitude (if needed) and treat our parents with the highest regard!

  40. Ben Blakey says:

The thing that stands out to me a lot in this chapter is how seriously God takes sin! Cursing your parents and kidnapping get the death penalty. As Christians, we need to not just shrug off sin, but take it seriously like God does!

  41. Skyler Wilson says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

wow just to think that if right now if any body cursed his parents that they would be put to death, it makes me realize how much we need Christ becase even though today if we cursed our parents we wouldnt be put to death, but it makes me realize how easaly deth can come. You never know when your time will come

  42. Haley Litz says:

Wow God takes our sin so seriously! And we need to take our sin equally serious. the punishment for sin is death, like in this passage. Honoring our parents is so important to God to, that the law was for a child to be put to death if one didn’t do that! This shows how lightly sin is taken nowadays. In small groups we talked about how we have so called “acceptable” sins in our lives where we think obeying God is optional at times which is so wrong and against the Bible! I know this is showing me how seriously I need to be taking my sin!

  43. Katie Baxter(: says:

8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her.

I agree with Brooke’s comment about how this is like talking about us as Christians, and how the Lord is our master, and we should want to please him. But God will not give us us away or let go of us if we disobey him, unlike the master in this case, he forgives us of our sins

  44. Wesley Wong:]] says:

22 “If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows.

23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

If you take a verse, you’re going to have to read the verses before and after it to understand its true meaning. In this case, people can just read Exodus 21:23-24 and think that this means getting back if someone does something bad to you. In Matthew it says for us to not seek revenge. Matthew 5:38-41. The thing is the verse before, Exodus 21:22, states that if a person hits a pregnant woman and her baby has a serious injury, it is an eye for an eye, a tooth or a tooth and so on.

I’m going to have to agree with Max that abortion is against the Bible because of these verses. vvvvvvvvvvvvv

  45. jeremy says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

i like this verse, it is intense that if we curse our father or mother we will be put to death!! it makes me realize how we need to be respectful to our parents and always be saying kind and gental words, if we are always cursing at them we should be examining our lives and seeing if we really are christians

  46. Julia CST :) says:

Just like so many of you have said already, God takes sin seriously. The consequences are severe. We need to fear the Lord! He is just and we all deserve death. Find joy in obedience.

  47. Zach Senger says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

I like this verse alot. Sometimes we take stuff lightly and do not really see the power behind them. And through this chapter we really see how strongly God took the people obeying his Law. Many times it said that the person who did the wrong would be put to death. And this verse is really powerful. There are people all over our campusses that are talking bad and down towards their parents. But in this verse we really see the importance of that Law to God!!!!!

  48. David Foot Krutch says:

I have to second Cam on this one…at first this chapter was very hard for me to wrap my head around, expecially with regards to all the slave talk. This slavery is different than that experienced back in the day in America so it was a little strange…but anyways when it comes to eye for eye tooth for tooth…Matthew 5:17-18 and then on to 38…Jesus fully explains this verse and talks about a punishment fitting the crime but then when it comes to us personally it is all about forgiveness…and that is shown all throughout the Bible!

  49. christopher eriksen says:

Ya, there are some crazy things here like if you’re boar is in the habit of being violent, and you don’t contain it properly and it kills someone, then you are to be put to death. These things sound harsh, but like a lot of people have said it shows how God truly hates sin. Our punishment should be instant Hell for the slightest sin in reality, and God is actually showing mercy. It is also good to know that He has provided mercy in saving us and allowing us to do what is right, so lets start glorifying Him rather than doing the same things over again that God detests.

  50. Mike says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

This verse has been commented on a lot, but one thing that stood out to me was that God is unchanging. And even though He does away with such a harsh punishment later on in the New Testament, He does not hate this sin – or any other sin – any less than He did before. So the next time we are tempted to disrespect our parents, we need to remember how much our “normal teenage phase” displeases the all-powerful Creator of the Universe who holds the keys to judgement – or reward, if we are faithful to keep His commands.

  51. Jacob Foreman says:

However, if it was known that the bull had the habit of goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up, the owner must pay, animal for animal, and the dead animal will be his.

I thought I would comment on what might be an easier verse to glance over because it doesn’t seem to apply to us at first. I mean how many of us seriously own a bull in the 21st century??? haha. I actually think it is relevant though because God created the law for even little disputes like having one bull kill another bull and having one owner take responsibility, etc… God was very specific in how He wanted these things handeled and expected obedience, just like He does from us today. God wanted to be as specific as possible and create laws here in Exodus that the Israelites could turn to for real life events that effect them on a daily basis. I saw a lot of values we still have today coming out of this passage, something that has probably been handed down.

  52. Jenae Naee says:

This time is just soooooo completely different than what we live in now. Like the differences are so extreme but we can still take these laws and apply them to our lives. Like Brooke said, we are slaves to God and we need to obey hiim and follow his commands otherwise he will punish us.

  53. Alex Mishreki says:

15 “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Wow! That’s a pretty intense crime right there! In this day and age, we’re surrounded by teenagers who don’t care anything about their parents. Can you imagine if they were living in Bible times? I think they’d start to act a little differently… We need to remember that even though we aren’t going to be put to death if we do these things today, God still hates it and will probably give us consequences for it. It’s a good reminder to make sure we are always living out and obeying what God commands.

  54. Katie Slusher says:

The theme I keep seeing in this passage is God’s punishment for these sins: death! God takes sin seriously! Oftentimes we approach our fight with sin way to lightly. I wonder if our our actions and attitude would change if we knew the penalty was death?

  55. Dan Blankenship says:

    Exodus 21

15 “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.
17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

How serious does God perceive these two commands? Here we see that cursing or attacking your father or mother are equally severe and end in certain death. I think that it is safe to say that acts like this make our Heavenly Father extremely angry. Wow that should make us really think about how we treat our parents.
If you do not honor your parents you are committing the same act of contempt on your Heavenly Father. Conversely if you honor your parents with love and respect than you will live.

Ex 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

If you stop and think about how serious physical violence against your parents is than just imagine that cursing your parents is just as evil.

  56. Derek Brower says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Its amazing how often a bad thing about parents are said now-a-days… Dissing parents is just a normal thing that kids seem to do, and we can’t follow in that example! We need to obey the Lord and do what He says! After all, they are the 10 Commandments – Not the 10 Suggestions!

  57. Leah says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Wow…I know so many people who hurl insults and curses at their parents, and they don’t get punished whatsoever. Boy times have changed since then.

  58. Nick Pifer says:

1 “These are the laws you are to set before them

I just think of the God who created the universe and spans it in the palm of His hand, set laws before Israel and later Christians and we don’t always follow them. Scary thought.

  59. Trembling from fear of God B says:

Another amazing chapter! The ten commandments; something many of us strive to live by. I just want to say that none of us can be perfect, but through Christ we can be! The only reason why we are not perfect I think is to show others how we need to humble ourselves before the Lord because compared to Him, we are nothing. God is separate, set apart, Holy. There’s nothing else in the entire universe like Him and I know that I need to be out there MORE telling others about how great God is. :D

  60. Rebekah Foreman KEEP DOING SOTD says:

17 “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

You should never Curse at your father or mother or anyone for you shall be punished if you do so.

  61. Mandi ;) says:

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

When I first read this I thought it sounded harsh but as I reread it i understood the importance and value of treating others the way you want to be treated. God calls us to love our neighbors. These verses are just another way God is telling you to love, but if you choose not to, you will receive an equal treatment.
