22:1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.
2 The rich and the poor meet together;
the Lord is the maker of them all.
3 The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
but the simple go on and suffer for it.
4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
is riches and honor and life.
5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked;
whoever guards his soul will keep far from them.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.
7 The rich rules over the poor,
and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
8 Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity,
and the rod of his fury will fail.
9 Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed,
for he shares his bread with the poor.
10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out,
and quarreling and abuse will cease.
11 He who loves purity of heart,
and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.
12 The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,
but he overthrows the words of the traitor.
13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!
I shall be killed in the streets!”
14 The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit;
he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.
15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
16 Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth,
or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
Words of the Wise
17 Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise,
and apply your heart to my knowledge,
18 for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
if all of them are ready on your lips.
19 That your trust may be in the Lord,
I have made them known to you today, even to you.
20 Have I not written for you thirty sayings
of counsel and knowledge,
21 to make you know what is right and true,
that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?
22 Do not rob the poor, because he is poor,
or crush the afflicted at the gate,
23 for the Lord will plead their cause
and rob of life those who rob them.
24 Make no friendship with a man given to anger,
nor go with a wrathful man,
25 lest you learn his ways
and entangle yourself in a snare.
26 Be not one of those who give pledges,
who put up security for debts.
27 If you have nothing with which to pay,
why should your bed be taken from under you?
28 Do not move the ancient landmark
that your fathers have set.
29 Do you see a man skillful in his work?
He will stand before kings;
he will not stand before obscure men. (ESV)

4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.
I think it’s ironic that so many people in the world want wealth, honor, and life yet most are doing the exact opposite of this verse. They try and get it all by their own power and ability and just end up sinning, but in reality all things are given by God out of His grace. So instead of trying to achive these threee thing by ourselves, we need to fear God and follow His commands with humility, becasue he created us and life in the first place. Since He created it, He knows the right way to live that will make us happy and acomplish His perfect will.
9 A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
This is a verse that shows the generous will be blessed for giving what is theirs to others. This is a counter-cultural verse because society teaches us that we should hoard all of our wealth and not give it away. God loves the generous and he even challenges us to test Him in the area of giving. We can not out-give God! When He puts it on your heart to be generous to someone, follow through, you will be richly rewarded.
13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!” or, “I will be murdered in the streets!”
Excuses! The idea here is that the lazy man is using these crazy excuses of what could happen to not go to work. Let’s make sure that we are not making any lame excuses for doing the three things we discussed this weekend: coming to church, reading our Bibles, and evangelizing the non-Christians in our lives.
In fact, take some time today to invite someone to Free In-N-Out Evangelism Wednesday Night!
17 Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
I really like these verses. We need to have teachable hearts, and listen to the wise. And also applying it to the teachings of God’s word. Verse 18 stood out to me because we need to be ready to share the word of God to others, and have all of them ready on our lips. These verses are encouraging, and motivates me to get on out there and to evangelize….. MORE AND MORE!
1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
This verse shows that it is better for people to respect you because of your character and how you represent Christ, than for people to respect you because of what you have. Super important because we need to make sure that we are representing Christ in all the things that we are doing, and living in a way where people are like wow he is different. But just like Bobby said this weekend we can’t just live in a way that represents Christ and hope people will just start doing the same thing, we need to go and proclaim his name.
1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold
I would rather have a good name over my head than have great riches. If people looked at me, I’d want them to see a disciple of Jesus Christ which is the best name you could have. This kind of ties in with the verse in Matthew 19 where it talks about a camel going through the eye of a needle is easier for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Many people in the world who are wealthy want to have everything because they are rich. Many rich people do not follow Jesus because they do not want to give up anything that they have, when they dont even realize that it is Jesus that blessed them with all that they have.
10 Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.
it only takes one such person to start arguments and quarrels. We need to make sure that we keep our distance from them. As Christians, we are to be the light of the world, and it is hard to shine for Christ if we are caught up in pointless arguments with those in the world. Likewise, we cannot be the person starting such quarrels. Instead, we need to have patience and discernment, and keep our conversations centered around Christ, so that there is no opportunity to fall into godless chatter.
9 A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
I need to learn to be much more generous with my time and with my money. God has been so generous with me, who am I to withhold anything good from someone else?
3 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
The difference between a Christian and the rest of the world, is that the Christian has realized his sin and has turned away from it, and to God. The rest of the world lives in denial, refusing to admit their sin even though they have been warned of the coming of God’s just wrath. The “good news” needs to be spread because many people will perish if they don’t here of the grace that Jesus provided. I pray that I could be more bold to stand up for Jesus’ name even if it is to a complete stranger.
I am not going to see any of you for the next couple weeks because I am going out of the country. Please pray for me!
2 Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.
Why is there separation between the rich and the poor when God has made them both? shouldn’t we work together to create a world that pleases the Lord? Money shouldn’t separate us from having a relationship with one another. God is the one who brings us together.
4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.
Being the servant that we are called to be will bring poor people, or already rich people, wealth, honor, and life! We both have a hope greater than those who don’t believe and that’s a life after this, a life with Christ in Heaven forever! That’s what keeps me going everyday. :)
13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!” or, “I will be murdered in the streets!”
We all know what this guy is doing. He is making excuses. AS Christians we need to make sure that we are not making excuses instead of doing the right thing. We are supposed to do the right thing when we are able to. So instead of being lazy and making excuses we need to do the right thing.
apply your heart to what I teach,18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
This reminded me of what Pastor Bobby was saying yesterday about not just listening but actually applying what you learn to your thoughts and actions. Example, when you read the bible and it tells you to honor your parents, you actually go out and treat them with respect. But you can’t do this if you are not in the Word, so pick it up and start reading and applying it. Only then can you have it in your heart and be able to share with others what the bible is talking about after you’ve lived it out. So delve into the Scripture, apply it to your heart, and go tell somebody!
17 Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
It pleases God when we read His Word. We shouldn’t just be reading it though, we need to be meditating on it & we need to know it and have it ready on our lips, like these verses say. I need to make memorizing the gospel a priority so that I can bring more people to Christ. When we’re evangelizing, it’s important to know what we’re talking about and be ready to point to a Bible verse when someone asks a question.
Hey!
22 Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,
23 for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who plunder them.
24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered,
25 or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.
cool verses. you shouldn’t assosiate with angry people because their hot heads may lead
them in to trouble, and you should respect the poor… nice.
4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.
Hunter pretty much said what I was going to. People today try so incredibly hard to get all of these things. They do whatever they can in their OWN will power. We have an extremely gracious God that we should fear all the time. If we do this, He will give us all these things. We can do anything with Him and we are so blessed because of this.
(:
24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered,
25 or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.
It’s really true that we pick up personality traits of our closest friends. We should chose close friends who honor the Lord and are obedient to Him. If we choose friends with anger problems, we’ll learn to become short tempered ourselves.
1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
I totally agree with what mark already said! I also think this verse is talking about being men and women of integrity. It is better to be poor and to be men and women of our words than to compromise the truth in order to make the extra buck
9 A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
This is seemingly such a simple concept, yet I think we (at least I) often forget that a) others often take note of our generosity & are in turn generous to us, whether it’s from reciprocation or emulation; b) we are blessed (“happy”) when we’re generous because we KNOW it’s a Godly trait that He wants us to have; c) when we’re generous, God Himself blesses us, whether here & now, even tangibly, or through our eternal rewards awaiting us in the New Jerusalem.
17 Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
I love the what it says in verse 17.. “apply your heart to what I teach”. We need to not just read His Word and listen to the sermons at Church but we need to apply it!! And we also need to listen to the wise .. because it pleases God when you have that engraved in your heart!!! <3
17 Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
It is not enough just listening to what we are supposed to do, or what is right…we need to excercise and live it out in our daily lives!!! when we do this we will be ready for all situations, like evangelizing
24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered,
25 or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.
these verses remind me of the verse in 1 Corinthians 15:33…bad company corrupts good character, although it is great to be a light to non believers you don’t want to end up being pulled down by them. stay strong in the ways of the Lord!!
28 Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your forefathers.
this verse is great becuase it addresses the fact that people will not listen to sound doctrine anymore, like 2 Timothy 4:3 says, and try to suit their own desires. it is important that we recognize what is sound and true as opposed to lies. a great example of how this verse is applied is the Catholics, who add books to the Bible and say that it is part of the Bible, when really it is not
2. rich and poor have this in common:The lord is the maker of them all
we all need to get along whether we have money or not, and if we do have money we should be helping the poor and be giving them money.
i think 24 and 25 are really good versus, because if we make friends with hot tempered people, if we do we may tempted to do bad things and follow their ways. we should be making friends that are christians and bring glory to the lord, and if we are associating with non-christians we should just share the gospel with them and tell them the good news, and they can choose what ever they sesire and if they choose not to follw christ we shouldnt hang with them:)))
4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.
Pride is the root of all sin. It is when we think that we know better than God or that we do what He tells us not to that we sin and that all comes from pride. Humility is valued and brings honor in life. Humility shows a heart that reflects a love and reverence for the work of Christ on the cross. May we seek to have this attitude…and remember it is only through God’s strength we can be humble.
17.) Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
Just as others have said, it really is not enough just to hear the Word or merely listen to instruction…but we must consistently apply it to our daily lives.
15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him
If someone tells you that you should not spank a child because it is mean and wrong, THEY ARE INCORRECT!!!! In this verse it says that a child should be spanked. This is called disipline. If a child does not have disipline they will not learn between right and wrong and will grow up to be a problem child. Almost every single messed up person I know has had a lack of disipline. This is why spanking a child is VERY important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
A good name is not like some thing beautiful or something that sounds cool. It is something that stands for something. No I don’t mean like Melissa means industrious or strong. I mean that your name is know for how you treat others, how you handle buisness, or persecution. When you look up esteemed you will find words liket regarded highly or favorably, respect or admiration. That is what a good name is. It is what you are and who you stand for.
MMMMMMM Proverbs.
2 Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.
I really like this verse. I really dislike it when people think that they are better tahtn other people because of their wealth. And this verse just shows that we are no different or better. We were all made by the Lord.
