5:1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”;
6 as he says also in another place,
“You are a priest forever,
after the order of Melchizedek.”
7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Warning Against Apostasy
11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (ESV)

“…by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
Daily Bible reading, aka Scripture of the Day, trains you to know right from wrong – something essential if we love God and want to live righteous lives.
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
Too many Christians seem perfectly content to stay where they are at in their small understanding of the Scripture. Sadly, this can also describe us at times, if we get caught up in the world and lose our desire for God’s Word. This way of life is not the relationship Christ wants from us; we need to be hungry and eager for Scripture and solid teaching, doing everything possible to take our faith to the next level! This summer gives us the perfect opportunity for that; let us not waste this valuable chance!
Heb 5:7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
Our role model. Even though Jesus is God and man at the same time, He still cried out to His Father but DID WHAT DAD SAID ANYWAY – for His glory. We need to emulate Him and pray fervently and then do what God says…
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
This verse is saying that you only mature in descerning right from wrong by constantly reading your bible, which is encouragment for us to read our bibles daily.
Great comment Mike, we need to discipline oursleves and get out of our Bible reading comfort zones, especially this summer!
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
the best way to conquer the sin in our lives and grieve God less is to read our Bibles! we are commanded by Sripture to read it, because it is what helps us fear the Lord and learn about our sin. like Pastor Bobby said last night, the Bible knows more about our sin that we do, because it is the Word of God, who cerated us. we need to heed God’s commands, and to learn them we must read the Bible.
6And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
This passage refers to the King of Salem (Jerusalem), Melchizedek, who Abram meets in Genesis 14:18. Melchizedek is an interesting Scriptural figure because he was more than just the king of Salem, he was also a priest. This verse in Hebrews is reminding us that Jesus has a unique preisthood, one that is much greater than the Levitical priesthood. We learned in Hebrews chapter 1 that Jesus is our priest, prophet, and king. This reference to Melchizedek is another reference to Christ’s special roles. He is the King of Kings and He is the one who serves as our High Priest to the Father, offering the sacrifice of His blood to atone for our sins. Let’s be sure that we are thankful today for the fact that Jesus is our King and High Priest who has given us access to a relationship with God!
We need to obey God commands and obey ower parents even if you think you are right but your parents now best.
Hebrews 5:12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! (Then) The author of Hebrews writes to his audience that he has much to tell them about Jesus being high priest in the order of Melchizedek, yet it is hard for him to explain it all to them because they are slow to understand. He tells them that they should be at the point that they can be teaching others, yet they still need others to teach them the simple and elementary truths about God’s Word all over again. He uses an analogy of what they are taking in as “milk”, and comparing it to the “solid food” that they should be taking in. (Always) A lot of people may repent of their sins and put their faith in Christ, and though they begin to learn a lot about God, they start to become content with where they are and what they understand. To the contrary, Christians should always be learning, for they all are growing in the process of sanctification, the process of becoming more holy. No Christian should ever be content or satisfied with His understanding of God and His Word, for no one but God knows everything. Christians should have an eagerness to grow in wisdom and in their faith, devoting themselves to more time reading the Word on a consistent basis. (Now) I need to never be satisfied with the level that I am at in my understanding. I can always grow more and more. I need to be filled with a hunger to learn more, such a hunger that it carries out into action. I need to be committed to God’s Word and not let other things take priority over it, for I need to desire understanding and seek it in God’s Word. In Christ, SEE
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
We need to be christians who want to grow and work up to that “solid food”. Like Mike said, too many christians are soo content just having the baby food when we really should be striving to get higher and higher! Aim to be holy because Jesus is holy!
4No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was. 5So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” —This reminds us that we can’t try an do everything by ourselves. We need to pray and ask God that His will will be done. And since we are living for God and not ourselves, we have to follow all of His commands.
great sermon Pastor Bobby! I will be praying that I can be quick to listen :)
Happy Father’s Day!!!
12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
This verse is really important for all Christians. Once we have repented and put our faith into Christ, we have a spot reserved in heaven. There is no doubt about that. However, once we are truly saved, we need to grow in our relationship with Christ. We need to be studying God’s word every day so that we can be fed our spiritual “food” We need to be learning more about God, and about how we should be living everyday. Also we should WANT to learn more and spend more time with God and in his Word. I pray that all of us would want to spend more time reading our Bibles and in prayer so that we would get to know our Creator more and more every day this summer.
Cant wait for Beach Night :)
♥always- mady
13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
This verse stood out to me because many Christians seem to be stuck in this stage of “infancy” in their walk with the Lord because they have repented and put their faith in Christ which guarentees them a spot in heaven. But, we should all be going through our sanctification process and growing in our relationship with God everyday. We should be pursuing righteousness and not stay content with where we are. And, as Mady said, we should want to be doing this! Yeayy for the long summer break where we can all be reading our Bibles, praying, and seeking the Lord more every day!
ELLO… I read
I like verse 14,”But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
I like this verse because it tells about how we are supposed to be toward the BIBLE. Instead of just learning about the Gospel we are supposed to preach it. We are supposed to study it and to learn it so that we can save others from HELL… well at least plant the seed GOD is the one who decides if it grows or not… But it is our job as CHRISTians to preach to others and to preach to others we have to know the BIBLE and be able to explain it to anyone.
CYA
2He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.
How incredibly amazing and comforting is it that our LORD and savior has dealt with every temptation that we have faced? Isn’t it just amazing? CHRIST has dealt with everything we have faced, and has mercy because of that. He is sympathetic towards our struggle.
9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
This basically sums up the Gospel in one verse (except for where Jesus died for our sin and rose again). But this still sums up a very important thing: Jesus Christ, through him, is the only way to eternal salvation in heaven. As Bobby preached today (about Qtips), we should be sharing what we have learned from the Bible with others and we should be sharing this and the Gospel to everyone we know because we don’t know when they’re lives could end or (better yet) when our savior Jesus Christ will return. Just as Jesus commanded us in Matthew 28:19, we should be the disciples of our generation and be going out evangelizing to everyone! MARANATHA: Come, O Lord!
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
We need to mature enough to be eating solid food. We need to be more mature Christians. We need to be trainning ourselves according to God’s Word to be doing good things instead of evil. We need to be mature enough where we could preach the Bible to the non-Christians and know how to answer non-Christians back to their questions!
Like what Kyle said, we need to be mature Christians and live according to His word, and a way that would help us is reading His word, so that we know what we need to follow and live by. SOTD is a great way to read a chapter a day and expand your knowledge of His Word. :]
***Read the bible***
8Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered
9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
10and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Even Jesus was learning new things each and every day. Though he was suffering he told his dad that they dont know what they are doing. He forgive the ones that were hurting them. That is telling us something. Also Happy Fathers Day to all of your dads.
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
we have the word of God to help us discern what is right and what is wrong. That should make us want to read it every day! When we are spiritually weak, it’s easy to fall into sin and temptation. Reading God’s word will help strengthen our daily walk with him.
8Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered
Although this is talking about Jesus’ death, it is also just a true statement in general. It reminded me of what Bobby said last week about how people either listen the first time and learn, or they listen, disobey, and then learn the hard way! Unfortunately, Jesus obeyed and had to suffer for our sins, which is why it is soooo important to listen and obey the first time!! The least we can do for Christ is listen to our parents the first time they ask us to do something…:D
(v.5a) So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest.
Jesus didn’t exalt Himself to be made a high priest. Instead he was completely humble, This is so unfathomable to think about… God as flesh, humbling himself with all of the infinite knowledge He has, to be a servant to us, and to die for us. The act that took place upon the cross was a perfect example of obedience and submission. The Father crushed the Son, the Son died willingly, the Spirit guides those who believe in the death of Jesus for our sins. Christ was the ultimate example of humility, He is our God and we need to live by His example. We need to be broken over the fact that our sin is the reason that the Son had to be crushed.
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
It is interesting how the word “training” constantly pops up over the Bible. The Christian life is a lot like being an athlete. Remember Pastor Bobby’s sermon on the Christian as an athlete from 2 Timothy 2:5? Athletes TRAIN! They work hard, practice, focus, and put all they have into their sports. They overcome obstacles and push on when things get tough. They avoid laziness and eat right. You and I need to have that same mind set. We need to put everything we have into following Christ and make sure we are feeding continuously on the Word to maximize our growth. Instead of being content with where we are at, like athletes, we need to pursue excellence in everything we do and press on toward the finish line!
9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
We can see that throughout all God’s Word a central message focuses upon Christ. In fact everything on this earth revolves around the Creator, who is Christ. Moreover, we should act in a way that shows that Christ is the focal point of of our life through obedience to Him.
This is peculiar to me but in Hebrews 5:9 it seems to suggest that Christ is: “the source of salvation [only] for all who obey him”. At first glance it seems to indicate that salvation is merited only to those in obedience to Him. But if one examines the rest of the Bible, he or she will come to the conclusion that the author is merely stating a fixed byproduct of the true qualification of salvation, which is contrite faith.
From this, I believe, we should realize that obedience and submission to Christ should be a commonplace fixture in our daily lives if we claim to have true faith. Although this may seem elementary, I believe, if one anticipates eventually to consume solid spiritual food he or she must first master consumption of spiritual milk, which is salvation by faith alone, accompanied by works as a natural byproduct subsequent to conversion.
Alright I hope this types correctly
I’m at work and I’m on my lunch break on my fellow employees I phone haha
Alright…bobby talked about verse 14 today, and it really convicted me
Like jenae said, some of us are comfortable being baby Christians
We need to be constantly training ourselves to be stronger Christians
It is so important because if we aren’t traing hard core now, then we are going to slowly walk away from the lord without realizing it
We need to train so that we aren’t among that large percentage of people who lose faith through college etc.
Thankyou pastor bobby for making that verse clear today!
Maranatha!!!!!!

14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Awesome reminder today in Bobby’s sermon that those of us who are saved should be longing for spiritual food! As we grow in our maturity, we should be constantly desiring to feed ourselves this spiritual food, rather than just being fed. In this verse we’re reminded that solid food is for the mature. A mature Christian has dedicated himself to studying God’s Word so that he can discern between what is right and what is sinful. As people desiring to please God through our actions, we must constantly and thoughtfully look to the Bible. Only through his Word has he provided us directives for how we should live our lives. The more we are in God’s Word, the more we will realize if our actions please Him. I pray that this summer we would take advantage of the free time and dedicate ourselves to God’s Word! That we would grow in our discernment as we eat more and more solid food!
As we become stronger Christians and grow in our walks with the Lord we should move away from “milk” and strive for “solid food.” We shouldn’t just accept ourselves as good people, but we should become better people and more righteous. God does not put up with “luke warm” christians (revelation 1). We should grow more and more.
11We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn.
12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
I think this stuck out most because we talked about it in the sermon today but also because it is saying to Crave God’s words as and infant would crave milk and saying you should strive to be as righteous as can be.
“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” This verse was pretty epic. It described Jesus’ prayers to God the Father from earth. Just as Jesus prayed with faith constantly, so we, the followers of Christ, should also be. I want to pray all the more this summer that I would not be consumed by the constant thought of being bored; Christians shouldn’t be bored when they have the inspired Word of God at their fingertips!
“Go to the ant you sluggard, consider it’s ways and be wise!”
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
I hope to become more and more mature in my walk with God as every day passes by. I pray this for all christains.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Like Bobby was talking about in his sermon today, the “solid food” is reffering to the spiritual food that mature Christians take in. When we first became a Christian we were feeding on “spiritual milk” (just like it said in verse 13). But as we grow and gain more and more spiritual knowledge through the studing of God’s Word, we start craving the spiritual “solid food”. We cant stay like little baby Christians. Just like how children grow into adults, we need to grow spiritually in Christ. The more we spiritually mature, the more we will be able to distinguish good from evil.
7During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
If we pray for something in God’s Will, it will be done. It may not be the timing we want but it will happen. And we can’t give up on praying. Jesus always prayed and we need to follow that.
7During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.I liked this verse because of the intensity of Jesus’ prayers. He cried out to God in submission. But i liked how he didnt just do it when he was in need like most of us do, but he did it just because he wanted to talk to the one who could save him. I need to not just pray because i need something, but to praise God as welll.
8Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered
This verse really hit me because of the cause effect used in it. We learn to obey what people tell us from the experience of suffering either the punishment or the bad choice we made. but we do need to pray that we learn how to act from God’s word first so that we dont have to fall into sin and then realize the bad choice. I need to do what the bible says so that i dont have to sin!
I read…
I liked the last two verses if the chapter… “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” In this verse the writer is saying that those who are new in faith study Scriptures in a smaller way so they can “digest” it. However, when we become more mature in our faith we begin to “eat” bigger chunks of the Bible. I pray that as I grow in my faith that I would keep “eating” more and more of it each day.
13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
This shows us just how important the word of God truly is. How can we expect to become mature without it? It is not surprising, that the issue of sin becomes a struggle when we distance ourselves from God’s word. The bible is critical for our development, without it we will remain infantile. I encourage everyone to make daily bible reading a priority, never let a day go by without spending time in the word!
12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Mmm good passage! This is the cycle of how Christians should be getting Gods word as we start out just like Bobby said this weekend we should be like baby emma and want our milk but as we spiritually grow into older christians we begin to be able to feed ourselves! Just like the message this weekend was saying.
I wonder what our church body would look like if everyone got their daily serving (or unlimited serving!) Of christs word and close time with Christ. Our church would stand out and people whether baby Christians or mature Christians we would be living for God and growing towards him every day! what an impact we would have on the people around us every day!
13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Christians cannot move into more hard core biblical teaching if they have not yet first grasped the conspet of being a Christian. Like Mike said, so many Christians feel that their are fine in their Christian walk and do not need more room for improvement. We can never leave room out for improvement. We always need to be striving to be the best we can be for Jesus Christ and be more like him each and every day!!!
11We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn.
This verse made me think of our last two sermons at True North about listening. We need to be quick to listen and quick to obey. When we aren’t doing either of these it has sad effects in our life in keeping us immature and useless for the Lord. I’m excited to get more and more into the Word this summer so I can “listen” with a heart that is ready to obey!
i read…
“Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered
9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him”
I think that as teenagers we all have obedience issues but if we proclaim ourselves Christians and are striving to life a life pleasing to God obedience even in the little things is what will seperate us from the so called “closet Christians.” if we have obedience we not only obtain the knowledge from God’s word but we choose to apply it to our daily lives…everyday i should want to serve Him and glorify His name through obedience for that is what He calls us to do but this can sometimes be a little harder than it sounds…unfortunatley…still i hope to make my goal for this next week obedience which connects really well on our sermon or having a listening ear…after you hear the truth we should immediatley put it into action…obedience…
night!<3333
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
We need to read the bible in order to grow in the Lord. It is our manuel for how to live a godly life because it teaches us what is right and what is wrong. It’s so awesome that we can learn about God and grow in him whenever we want.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
This was a great reminder from Bobby’s message today. We will only really be trained to live rightly if we are making constant use of the Bible. Just like we would practice to become good in anything else, we should also becoming skilled in how we handle God’s word!
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Basically as christians, we should strive for continous growth and mature in God’s word. Not meerly stained like an infant who just survives on milk. By reading God’s word everyday we are getting to know Him better and can become stronger christians.
well, what i got from these last few verses is that infant or mature we all need spiritual food!! it will help us to grow in our relationship and seek Christ further everyday
12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
This reminds me of Bobby’s sermon this weekend! We need to be listening to the sermons and the verses we read and the confrontation of our friends. We need to be open to the conviction we feel and not be defensive. We need to be seeking more and more of the Word… that way we’ll be able to take on the spiritual “solid food”- the deeper stuff that God wants us to learn!
These vereses are really great and help for each of us to examine where we are at as christians. Am I moving on to more solid spiritual truths or am I just listening for those simple truths. If we are christians we should not only be desiring to read the bible but we should be growing in our knowledge of God and the scriptures. drinking milk like babies for this would show that we are still at the baby stage but, craving the deep hearty spiritual food which would show that you are the teen or adult stage the more oyu crave the more you will grow in Christ. My we all wake up tomorrow wanting to dive into the WORD and eat that spiritual food of biblical truths up.
Great to read these comments at the end of the day!
I’m definitely praying that True North students will move from milk to solid food and become teachers of God’s Word!
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
great comment mike. As Christians, we need to be growing and maturing in our sanctification. We should be craving solid teaching, and using our time wisely by filling ourselves with the word of God daily. We need to make sure that we are always growing, and never getting comfortable with our faith. We need to always be taking things to the next level, making sure that we never become luke warm. Meditating on scripture and feeding ourselves with wholesome things, is something that needs to be on the top of our agenda this summer!! (:
Hebrews 5
12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
I love the end to this chapter which warns us about spiritual laziness. We can become so complacent that our relationship with Christ becomes stagnant and starts to deteriorate. That is why it is so important to immerse our minds in the Word of God so that we will not be swayed from the truth.
Heb 3:7-11 So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. 10 That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”
9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
it is so awesome to think about how Christ died on the cross for us. we r so sinnful and so far below God that it is unfathomable to think about why He would send His son to die for us when He is so perfect. not only that, but all we have to do is to repent and have the faith in Him.
We need to conquer sin by going to God not fearing Him and looking to the Bible for answers.
