Proverbs 7

Warning Against the Adulteress

7:1 My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;
bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,
to keep you from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words.

For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,
and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,
passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house
in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.

10 And behold, the woman meets him,
dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.
11 She is loud and wayward;
her feet do not stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the market,
and at every corner she lies in wait.
13 She seizes him and kisses him,
and with bold face she says to him,
14 “I had to offer sacrifices,
and today I have paid my vows;
15 so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
16 I have spread my couch with coverings,
colored linens from Egyptian linen;
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.
19 For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;
20 he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”

21 With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.
22 All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast
23 till an arrow pierces its liver;
as a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.

24 And now, O sons, listen to me,
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths,
26 for many a victim has she laid low,
and all her slain are a mighty throng.
27 Her house is the way to Sheol,
going down to the chambers of death. (ESV)

  2. Jacob Antoun says:

    Lemme just say…. Daniel, that was pathetic…… congrats, ha, your comment said nothing hehe…..just saying :P ok, so on with the first LEGIT comment :)

    3 Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
    4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman;

    Proverbs seems to be centered around the importance of wisdom! We need to make attaining Godly wisdom a priority in our lives! As the writer says, we need to bind wisdom around our fingers, wear it like you would a ring or bracelet, it needs to be something that is just a part of us as christians!
    I cant wait to gain more wisdom from this great book!!! :)

  3. Derek Brower says:

    25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths.

    Just like it says, we need to stay away from all sin. Here is a great verse about staying pure:

    Psalm 119:9

    How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

  4. What awesome chapters we have been going through lately! Can I get an amen? Haha

    I love the idea verse 3 makes in this chapter

    “3Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”

    and it is also said like this in chapter 3 verse 3 as well, and just the idea, the concept of this is awesome, if we write them on our heart we will be them, we need to constantly be thinking about love and how we can ‘be that love’ to others as well as God.

    So we need to write them on our hearts true northers!

    Hey just to let you know everyone… i DID have a legit comment. if you check yesterday its on there. Cuz i checked the website just to see if bobby uploaded it early

  6. Mike says:

    22 All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose
    23 till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.

    This chapter deals with adultery, but these verses are true about all sin. Sin leads to death, as Romans 6:23 clearly states. But if sin looked like something bad, there would be many less people falling into it. instead, like the adulteress, it is enticing and draws unsuspecting victims in. But these verses are a grim reminder that sin never pays off. The traps have been set and are waiting for us to fall into them. instead, let us make sure we stay on the LORD’s path, not veering to the right or to the left, to ensure that we stay far away from the temptations of sin.

  7. Allen says:

    This passage just literaly absorbed my whole attention. half way through my brother was talking to me and I didn’t even know because I was so focused. It is so right how sin is like an ox being led to the slaughter. Sin can engulf us like fire and desrtoy us and those around us. But with God he is like the firefighter and He comes and saves us. Ya ya I know lame but hey, it works for me.

  8. christopher eriksen says:

    7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who lacked judgment.

    In the story, adultery started with lacking judgment. He wasn’t disciplined, but allowed himself into a situation were he was enticed into sinning. We need to instead be always evaluating the situations we allow ourselves to be a part of, avoiding situations where we know we will be tempted to sin, and instead put ourselves in places were we can be mutually encouraged with other Christians and bring glory to God.

  9. Gabriel Voris says:

    7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who lacked judgment.

    In this story, a young man without judgement was seduced into by a lady into commiting a sin and doesn’t even make an attempt to control himself. He gives in to his sinful desires. This shows you that we need to be continually checking ourselves to see if we are making decisions that God would want us to make according to his commands.

  10. “3Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”
    Matt I second what you had to say. What a great exhortation. We need to take the wisdom from the Lord and be so well versed in His truths and of His commands that it as if they were bound to our fingers and written on our hearts. What a great illustration this brings to mind! They need to be so written on our hearts that they are displayed in and through our lives.

  11. Beth Lauder says:

    2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

    This verse reminded me of Pastor Mike’s sermon point #3 from this weekend…”Respect Your Father’s Boundaries.” God has given us His commands to follow and they are the appropriate boundaries for our lives. Anything He tells us not to do is for our own good and we will be wise to follow His commands. We must treat God’s commands, which are clearly found in His Word, as we would our very eyesight. My Study Bible said that the apple of your eye is your pupil and it is to be protected at all costs because we would lose our eyesight without it. It got me thinking that we are living blindly when we go through life following our own way. God’s commands help us to see how we should live, and live life to the fullest!

  12. Julien Griffe says:

    Evil tries to drag you down and it is very hard to fight it. It is pretty much a war against evil. Like this 3 verse “25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths.
    26 Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng.
    27 Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.” A good image I have of this is a man that climbs a mountain that lead to God, but it is not that easy because this man is pulled down by heavy sin.

  13. Kt Melrose says:

    2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

    3 Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

    The bible is clearly telling us to keep all His commands and to hold them very close to our hearts. We always need to use them to guide our lives and always think of them.

  14. Cameron says:

    first time on th new page hoo rah! its pretty cool.

    I really love Proverbs, so much wisdom and teachings in it.

    2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

    well this is pretty straight forward, living for the the Lord equals eternal life, and if we keep the commands that the Lord has given us, we will live not just a life on earth, but one with the Father as well. this was pretty encouraging for me

  15. it's Daniel Yo! says:

    1 My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.
    2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
    3 Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

    We need to apply this toall vereses. I need to start memorizing more because i used to in private school and i kind of got out of the habit of it.

    Well anyway, i heard that in a war one time, an american soldier that had memorized a chapter of Psalms. When he was taken by the Vietnamese as a POW he could recite it.

  16. Brett says:

    2.) Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

    Cameron, I completely agree with you, this really is an encouragement to know that the Lord has promised us a life with Him after this one.

  17. Luke Melrose!!!!!!!!! says:

    I love Proverbs!! It is filled with so much useful information.

    4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman;
    5 they will keep you from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words.

    WISDOM IS SOOOOOOOOOOO IMPORTANT!! It keeps us from sin and helps us in every way. It is definitely something every Christian should strive for!!!!!!!! The way we can aquire wisdom is to stay in the Word!! LETS KEEP POSTING ON SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY!!!!

  18. Matthew Richards says:

    † 25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. †

    I think of so many people who have claimed to be Christians only to get derailed by their sins. I love how Proverbs emphasizes that we should not even let our heart turn inside. We cannot let ourselves even ponder the ways of sin otherwise we will be taken down and led astray. We need to focus on keeping our heart pure and our walk on the straight and narrow.

  19. Brooke says:

    2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

    This verse really stood out to me! Do the Lord’s will and follow his commands! And I agree with Brett and Cameron, how that equals eternal life. We need to be living for he Lord and giving him glory.

  20. PaYtOn :] says:

    1 My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.

    In pastor bobby’s message this past week he said that we need to listen and here is another proverbs were it is telling one to store/remember/ listen to what i am saying.

    2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

    When we listen we can know by listening and not by experience. And we won’t die if we listen. We need to protect and take hold of what is being taught to us and also pass it along, so others may know about the wrong and so that they too can live. :]

    ***TAKE HIS WORD SERIOUSLY AND GUARD IT WITH YOUR HEART***
