You Will Not Abandon My Soul

A Miktam of David.

16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.

The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (ESV)

    Ps 16:9-10 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

    I am safe and joyful because God has decided to replace my record with Jesus’ perfect one! David saw this in his descendant and we see it in the history of Jesus. And we’ll live with Him forever! Now, Lord, please let me live with joy in my heart and rejoicing on my tongue today! Let everyone see!

    David was telling God that He is his Lord, and apart from him he has nothing that is good. The LORD is truly good and satisfies with true happiness. Apart from Him there is nothing good. Though the world and most of the people in it would love to think differently, the things here like the physical possessions can’t bring real happiness, and with time they will not last. Many people delight in sin as the liv in pleasure, but in reality, sin doesn’t make you happy. It leaves you empty inside. But the LORD satisfies. People feel delight when they see how God made them to live for Him and start to live as they were made to do. David writes many times that on His Word he meditates and finds delight. It brings not emptiness but fullfillment and joy to live as you were made to. One of the lines from “Satisfy” by Tenth Avenue North says this: “You’re beautiful, You’re beautiful/ You’re more than all this world can give”. The world and all its sthings and splendor can’t measure up to the greatness of God, or even anywhere close. I need to keep this mindset always, making the LORD all that I am seeking after and not looking away to things that don’t matter and won’t bring real joy.

    What an example David is setting here!! He is saying that the Lord is the main focus of all he does and that he has continually set the LORD before all other worldly pleasures of this earth.
    In verse 2, what David said reminded me of idolatry. So many people today, including me, are or have put something before God. That’s something that we all struggle with and here is David just going right past it for he is that close in his walk with God!
    In verse 8, he says, ‘I have set the LORD always before me.’ What an awesome thing to say you were able to do!! To ALWAYS set God before EVERYTHING!!! That is something I want to say I have done and I pray that I will not put anything no matter how small in front of the LORD.

    Apart from you i have no good thing…wow.Can we imagine a life without even knowing about Jesus? Or a life where God never sent himself down in the form of man? Life would be so different…we’de be livin it up in the OT times…where if we lied about something, we’de be turned into a grain of salt! Im sooo glad God is merciful because i know that if Jesus Christ never happened, i would be an infinate amount of grains of salt…pretty sad to say.
    I know that i take Jesus for granted at times, and i am glad that i realize that because when i think about a world without a savior, its scary! So thankyou Lord for sending Jesus Christ down for me and for all of us.

    This verse is familar, this is our theme verse for our ministry or Idk how to put in words right now! This verse is a lot meaningful to me know then last time I read it! It reminds me of Revival, you’re either on God’s team (it’s all about God) or Satan team (it’s all about you) and David says it’s all about God, not me. God is more important to me, than myself. What God wants will not go before what I want, if it contracts. I am praying that I can have that same mindset of David!

    Prophecy Alert! “nor will you let your Holy One see decay” It’s talking about Christ, “Holy One” when someone decays, it means they have been dead over a long period of time, but see God is not going to allow that because it can’t happen! Christ was ressurrected, He did not stay dead, He is alive!!! Then in then first part of this verse David says that God will not abandon David to the grave, which means He won’t let us die but bring us into His presence, God is still going to be with David, now in His presence!

    In almost every Psalm we have read so far, the author talks about taking refuge in the LORD and asking HIM to help in their time of need.

    5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.

    When we repent and put our faith in HIM the LORD prepares a place for us up in heaven. This is what it says in John 14:2-3:

    “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

    Believe in the LORD and but you faith in HIM and repent of your sins, and HE will have a place for you and will come back some day to take us home with Him. :] Maranatha!!!

    Set the LORD as your first love and never put anything before HIM. :D

    David understood and knew God, even though he had moments of anguish. He always comes back to the timeless truths of our LORD. He knows that it is only by God that he has been blessed with anything good. So it is true for our lives also. Do I really believe that apart from the LORD I have nothing good. I do. The Lord is the sustainer and provider. Not only that but no matter how good I think I am compared to the holiness of God I am wretched and destined for hell. In Psalm 14 it talks about how no one is good. This is such an important truth because its through that acknowledgement the Lord leads us to repentance. And once we repent then the Lord can begin to work in our lives and we are made new alive in Christ. I love how Bobby described Gods love at beach night. Gods love is shown by that he loves us through his son Jesus Christ. And that explains why apart from God we have no good thing. Because it is only through Christ and in him that we live as children of God.
    Amazing! and MARANATHA!

    7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me

    I also really liked this verse. The LORD is the one who counsels me. So many people including christians are looking to everything but God to counsel them but here is another great truth God is our counselor and now because we live in the church age we have the Holy Spirit who dwells within us and he is called our counselor. He is always directing and leading us speaking to us the truth. Not only is the Holy Spirit our counselor but he is also the truth therefore, he counsels to us the truth of his word. I want to take refuge and confidence in this. I can know because of Psalm 16:7 that I am being counseled by his Spirit every moment because it says even at night my heart instructs me. night is when we sleep so basically even when we are asleep the LORD is still our counselor.

    As Kyle already pointed out, this is a prophecy about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In fact both Peter in Acts 2 and Paul in Acts 13 preach on this passage in the early church! David had hope of a life after death because he knew the “Holy One” or Christ would rise from the dead!     This verse gives us a glimpse into how glorious our salvation is. God has made known to us the path of life which is in the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Because of this we will be in his presence forever experiencing inexpressible joy. And we will be fully satisfied with God’s pleasures throughout all of eternity! Wow…I’ve had some good times as a Christian but to think of being in God’s presence and seeing his glory shine around! To think about being in the New Jerusalem where there will be no more sin or pain or death and I will be completely 100% happy! It is encouraging to read this morning about how the best is yet to come! This is encouraging me to press on today for Christ! And I can’t wait to see him – MARANATHA!!!

    The Lord is the best source of counsel and guidance a Christian can look to; but often, we find other places to go. You don’t even have to look to someone else for wrongful guidance. Everyone in the world, including those who claim Christ but do not live for Him, are run by their own desires, going where they want to go and doing what they want to do. And for us as Christians, who are constantly battling against this sinful nature, it can be hard to rejoice in the direction God gives, since from our earthly perspective it requires sacrifice and hardship. But we need to take our focus off of this life and onto God, who is Perfect, Loving, and Omniscient. The path that He has for us and the guidance that His Spirit gives us will be the best for us, and we need to praise Him for that instead of fighting to do things our own way.

    I nudge to live deferentially and with complete obedience to the Lord. The calamity and uncertainty comes when we as flawed beings presume to “Drive the Bus”. None of our accomplishments or our presumed gifts come as a result of our good or our worth, all talents and gifts placed with us by God to do his Work for his Glory.

    Isn’t it a great relief to know that the Creator is in control and in charge. No worries, no stress; devotion and submission.

    I couldn’t agree with these two verses more! I am so thankful for everything God has done in my life. Its hard to remember that God is loving us even on our bad days. But, as Bobby reminded us on Wednesday, his love is never ending and it is just as strong when something bad happens to us as when something good happens to us. Our ‘boundary lines’ have fallen way beyond what we deserve. Because of this, I am confident in God’s love for me through Jesus Christ.

    it is God and only God who can melt our hearts of stone, and only Him who can change us to make us want to love Him. He has graciously changed us so that we can live in the path of life, the path that leads to an eternity with Him forever. in our lives, God needs to be the one who fills us with joy, not anything in the world. we are to serve Him and to glorify Him, and he will reward us for our service. we need to constantly be thanking God for His redeeming work in our lives, for the joy we have in Him, and for the rewards and treasures He has for us in heaven!

    That is a very powerful statement. David was the king yet his wealth and position ment nothing to him. His focus was on God and his majesty. This is a goal for me in my life. To be able to eventually say, “apart from you I have no good thing.” There are many things which take up most of my time. My prayer is that we all can cast down our idols and fix our focus on God.

    What an amazing promise that God has make us. He will fill us with joy in His presence for eternity along with eternal pleasures. We do not deserve that at all. There is nothing that we could do to even get close. We are sinners, dead in our sin. Yet the merciful Lord has, as this verse says, “made known to (us) the path of life”. We can never do enough to thank the Lord. And the least we can try to do is live righteously for him. He is amazing and I know that I really need to make sure that praising Him is a part of my daily life.

    Priority…David has placed the LORD number one on the list, even before himself! I remember at Revival 09 Pastor Mike talked about making resolves to commit to the Lord. Here David is making a resolve (verse above). I resolve today to exalt the Lord before myself and seek first His kingdom!

    This verse is so true! People who are not walking with the Lord may look like they are fine on the outside and may feel somewhat satisfied with their life, but inside they truthfully are missing a big part in their life and in their heart and they do feel that, but think they need to fill it with worldly things instead of Gods Word. For me, if I am apart from the Lord, nothing really matters, nothing in my life will be good. Walking with the Lord, I do have good things in my life…the Lord will bless me, and I do not have a missing part in my life and heart.

    I like this verse because it tells of how great GOD is. If we are apart from HIM there is no good thing. This pretty much sums up HELL not one good thing is there only pain suffering and separation from GOD which is the worst punishment ever.

    I read . . .

    Psalm 16 . . .

    “2. I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”

    We’re only living for God and God alone, correct? So loosing your favorite shirt or your cellphone would be meaningless because we should only have one good thing we’re living for . . . OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. If I was to be seperated from my Lord I would loose the one and only thing WORTH living for, my Heavenly Father. Everything else in the world compared to Him is simply meaningless and is worth nothing if I were to loose it.

    I couldn’t just comment on one verse in this SPECTACULAR chapter, so like many, I loved verse 8 . . .

    “8. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

    This verse is a perfect recap of verse 2. If I am living for Him 24/7 100% of my life, then He should be my one and only set before me. I won’t be shaken in my faith from temptation or any evil because God will be at my right hand. If you claim yourself to be a Christian, make sure you have your priorities straight and that you have God at the top of your list and nothing else even competing with Him. =)

    I liked the two parts of this verse-and how you can get two meanings out of a small verse. The first part talks about our priorities in life. Puting God in front of everything-and living our life for him. I imagine a race when I saw this verse-like a runner with the finish line waiting for him. This verse gives me that mind set-where we are living our life and all we see is Him. I also liked the second part cuz it gives me peace and hope that I can be bold in my school and be persecuted and be called names for the Lord Jesus, and I can know that I will not be shaken because I didnt do it alone. I loved this chapter!

    We need to call out to God for help instead of trying to do something on our own. He is our safety and the only reason we are still alive so we have to ask him to keep us safe. I want to trust in God for everything and I want to go to him first with every problem or worry I have. I need to trust that he is in control of everything.

    YES. This verse is awesome! Its pretty much the True North slogan. We need to apply it to our lives. Is God always set before you? Do you always think of Him, talk to Him, obey what He says, etc.? We are secure in the Lord as long as we follow Him. Nothing will shake you from the strong grip that God has on you as long as you live the Christian life by serving God.

    This completely true, very significant concept I tend to forget or look over, obviously showing how “worldly” or sinful I truely am. Like Ari said – “Losing your favorite shirt or cellphone would be meaningless…” God is so great that the worldy things I consider good, immediately lose any worth I thought they had in one thought of God. I definintely need to meditate on this verse…I think I’m going to memorize it! This verse just really hit it home for me and I will most definitely work on it, but only with God’s help and strength.

    Hmmm…do I really believe this? Do I really believe that apart from God I have NO good thing? One lesson I have been learning recently is that I should not be content BECAUSE of all the blessings I have (i.e, friends, family, church, a house, etc.). I need to be content BECAUSE I have Christ. That is ALL I need. I don’t need anything else. Paul says in Philippians 4:12, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” He wasn’t content because he had more than someone else in the world, he was content because he had Christ and eternal life.

    I need to remember first, that outside of Christ I don’t need anything; and second, that all the good things I do have come from Christ. This will make me meditate on God’s goodness and love.

Just like KJ said, David says its all about GOD and not ourselves…we need to always be thinking if what we are doing is for God or for ourself and if its for ourself, ask God to help us and strengthen us. After reading this verse over and over, it convicted me a lot of how ive been thinking about what i want and not always about God like i should…im praying that my thoughts, words, and everything i do, GOD will be set before myself always!

    I love this verse, its a great reminder! And it really is SO TRUE! We have NOTHING apart from God! This should make us so thankful for what we do have! Its really by his mercy that we have it! This reminds me of Luke 10, where the disciples were casting the demons from people and they were so excited that they were doing that….but God pretty much said to them, don’t be rejoicing in this but be rejoicing in the fact the fact that you will be able to spend eternity with Me! That even casting out demons doesn’t compare to how important it is to have a relationship with God! Love it! So encouraging!

    When we are on his team, God will always be with us and never desert us. We can and must be confident that we are protected and safe because he is on our side. We don’t need to worry at all! That is an amazing feeling, to know that God is always in control and that we don’t need to worry because he is with us!

    This is so encouraging. We should always keep praising God for everything. He is the only one who gives us wise counsel. It seems like a lot of churches are watering down Christianity but we should always listen to true Bible based teaching and God’s word for His counsel and advice.

    David makes it a point to make the Lord his number one priority in life and I should follow his example. Sometimes I fall off track and get distracted by other things. So many people are persecuted and tortured for the gospel and we think it’s hard to evangelize to the person in our math class. God is always with us no matter what and nothing will shake us. Like that verse we learned at revival that God will not let us be tempted beyond what we could bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). Throughout the psalms, David continually seeks the Lord out for His will.

    Putting the Lord before yourself is want we all should be thinking all the time. I know I have a hard time putting my sports second and the Lord first. I know the devil would like me to put other things before the Lord. Just like in the last sentence I will not be shake. Also knowing that God is always watching after us even when we are asleep. Making sure that we follow his path. I love that I will always have someone looking after me even when I am sleeping. Also to make sure I make the right choices.

    i feel convicted when i read this verse. sometimes i take joy in worldly things, like brand names and such. but i shouldnt, because God is the only thing that i should care about.

    my family has been praying constantly for my cousin and my aunt,who arent christians. we have tried to talk to them about repenting, but they dont want to listen. so we have been praying that their hearts would be softened and they would realize that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life, and lately their lives have been miserable. they get speeding tickets and their family has been arguing a lot. and i think that God is trying to wake them up and show them that He is the only way. and this verse reminded me of them.

    These verses are so encouraging!!! We should make the Lord our #1 priority in our lives because look at all he has done and is doing in our lives! How amazing is it to know that God has our lives in his hands and he has a plan for us!!

    Couldn’t have said it any better. Nothing comes CLOSE to being as wonderful as our relationship with our heavenly Father. It is by His grace that we are even alive and this should motivate us to live for him alone! We are his children and I want to make sure I do everything possible to please him before anyone else. Life itself is such a blessing and I’m so thankful to God for it.

    In our lives today, we have so many things that we think can make us happy. Whether school, sports, friends, or something else, we all have things that we view as “good.” But they all pale in comparison to the Lord. Nothing can truly satisfy apart from Christ.

    This verse really stood out to me because it made me realize i need to think this way more often. When i think about all the good things in my life and i imagine if they were all taken away… I need to think like this more often. Next time something doesnt go right or things aren’t looking too good for me, i will know that no matter what bad things happen in my life, i always have something to be glad about. I have Jesus Christ, my Lord and savior :)

We have this eternal joy knowing that God gives us eternal life through his son AND we have full assurance that Christ rose from the dead through things like prophecies written in the bible!! Doesn’t that just amaze you?! It reminds me of the bible point for today at camp compass!! God cares for us!! ;D There is no reason to worry about life’s trials and difficulties because we have God on our side!! Everything in this world is temporary which is why I look forward to the day I see the Holy One in heaven!! :D

    Our minds trick us to think that so many things can satisfy us other than God, but they really cant. We always will want something different. With God, he always satisfys us and leaves us feeling good and at rest with him.

    This is just a really encouraging verse for me to evangelize because no matter what people will say to us, we always have Christ by our side and if someone rejects us, we will not be shaken and he will help us stand firm.

    I was upset today about something dumb I had done and right when I was, I reminded myself that God calls us to be joyful always, even when it seems impossible. I’m so glad I read today’s Psalm because it just encourages me all the more to be praising Him no matter what is happening in my life! Rob Biagi also reminded me of this too and obviously, this is the lesson God wanted me to hear today! I need to praise Him though, even in the late night. That would be awesome! :D

    This is truly an incredible statement! David is saying here that apart from having a relationship with God he has NOTHING that is good. The Lord is the only thing he has that he considers to be good! What an awesome attitude! I hope that someday I will be able to realize that this is true and proclaim it along with David.

    4 “The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips.”

    This is a great warning and encouragement to NOT have any idols in my life. If those who put something ahead of God will only have increased sorrows in their life, I don’t want to be one of those people!
    I pray that God would help me to keep Him as the absolute #1 priority in my life!

    These verses have ministered to me greatly over the past few years. I have a heart condition that causes my heart to race for no reason. When this happens it is terrifying and I repeat this verse over and over again when it is happening. WIth my focus on God no matter what is happening in my body I can rest secure and not be shaken. God’s omnipresence is so amazing! He is right there with me when my heart is going crazy and I am so grateful for that!

    This verse is so legit. It is talking about how the Lord should always come first, He should be our main and number one priority. We should not set anything before He who is mos high. We will not be shaken because He is our sustainer and protector. He is always protecting us.

    Throughout his life, David was persecuted by king Saul because of his successes. but that only happened because he was obeying God’s commands.
    we are surrounded by bad things, especially now that we’re in highschool.

    This verse really stands out to me because of how true it is, and how often I forget it. Everything that I have on this earth that is a material possesion will be gone when I die. So, in the long run, there is no good things we have on this earth, other than those that come through the Lord.

    This entire passage was full of good points but this verse really stuck out to me. It talks about how those who seek anything other than God, whether it be drugs, sex… will not find true happiness. God is the only source of happiness. He is the only one who can truly satisfy. The devil may make it look like sinning will bring you pleasure but that’s a lie. Nothing can/will satisfy like the Lord. Glory be to God and praise his name.

    True North! This is such an encouraging passage. It makes it clear that if we always have GOd first in our hearts and follow all his ways, then we will have eternal life with Jesus Christ. It seems simple enough? Why do we make it so difficult. Let’s just stop sinning and start training ourselves not to give into godlessness.

    We need to put God first in our lives and even when it seems like we dont have time or we are busy, we need to make God our first priority and worry about everything else later. I like in verse 9 where it says we need to rejoice and who wouldnt with God on their team anyways!!!

    we need to remember that all of the idols that are put in our lives are placed there by the devil. there is nothing they are meant to do besides make us fall away. We need to try to refrain from putting something else above God, and need to do what he wants instead, because as this verse says, they bring nothing but sorrow.

    Every good and perfect gift is from above. If you have ever had anything good happen to you in life it is only because God has allowed it. God is the very definition of good and without God we wouldn’t be able to experience good things. Eternal life is a good thing its the ultimate thing. Living life for yourself is a bad thing. Why would someone want to trade 70 years of living for themselves for an eterninty in hell. Do you know how long eternity is? Its forever. Count the Cost and then repent of your sins and give your life to Christ because its totally worth it!! Especially when you consider your eternity.

    Wow I’m posting late. Sorry, I kind of lost track of time. This verse is so encouraging. It shows us not only a promise of the LORD’s, that he will protect us, but also David’s trust in him. We need to have such faith as David.
