Abraham’s Death and His Descendants
25:1 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5 Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. 6 But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.
7 These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. 8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. 9 Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, 10 the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. 11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.
12 These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham. 13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes. 17 (These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.) 18 They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria. He settled over against all his kinsmen.
The Birth of Esau and Jacob
19 These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. 21 And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
the older shall serve the younger.”
24 When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
27 When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Esau Sells His Birthright
29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. (ESV)

21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
God answers prayer! This is a great motivation to pray! Let’s get into the secret place and pray to our Heavenly Father who wants to give us good gifts!
Hope to see you at True North and the baptism today with 90 people getting baptized and 29 high schoolers! To God be the glory for the work he is doing at our church!
Gen 25:32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
Thanks, Pastor Bobby, for gleaning hope through prayer from this passage. A little further down God tells about another person, Esau, who doesn’t have his mind on eternal things but is most concerned with ‘things of this world.’ He thinks so little of God’s plan that he gives up his birthright becasue he’s hungry! A great lesson for us to look to our prize in heaven instead of focusing on our circumstances here…
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
I too liked this verse because GOD ANSWERS PRAYER like Bobby said and taught last night or this morning! We can intercede on others behalf and when we pray in God’s name according to His will He will answer prayer!! Let us PRAY PRAY and PRAY SOME MORE!!!
22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LORD.
“She went to inquire of the Lord” also good motivation to pray. In times of trouble when we are not sure what is going on, it is a good idea to inquire and talk to the Lord for he knows all things. I definitely need to remember in times of trouble that I can talk to God in heaven instead of trying to figure it out by myself. Keep praying!
33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.
It might seem crazy for Esau to sell his birthright for some stew, but the bottom line is that he acted on impulse, satisfying his immediate desire for food without considering the long-term consequences of his actions. Don’t we do the same thing sometimes? We can give in to the same temptation, to impulsively go after something we want and losing sight of the future. When we desire something we must first consider whether it is God’s will for us and weigh out the short-term satisfaction with long-range consequences before we act.
But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.
I know the story of these brothers. It is the start of the Jacob and Esau story. Pretty intense story about the adventures of Jacob and Esau. Starts getting really intense when Isaac is tricked by Rebekah and Jacob to give his blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. It is a shame that Esau despised his birthright. However, I’m glad that I love my brother and that we get along well.
Baptism today!!! :)
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
God does answer our prayers
prayer changes everything!
if it is in Gods will(:
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?
I echo the comments of Beth. Esau is so focused on his immediate, temporary needs and their satisfaction that he loses sight of something that is far more important, his birthright. Though it seems ridiculous in hindsight, many of us make the same mistake each day with our spiritual lives. We tend to our immediate and pressing needs such as eating, getting our homework done, playing a sport or activity, replying back to a text or facebook, or hanging out with friends, while neglecting our time with the Lord (prayer and reading the Bible).
Make the commitment with us at True North in advance to read the SOTD and to spend at least 10min/day in prayer. Make it a priority by blocking out time in your schedule. If we don’t prioritize what is important in our life we will make the same mistake as Esau and tend to the urgent things while neglecting what is truly important.
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
God really does answer prayers–ask and He will answer! Prayer needs to be a priority, and as Christians we are called to build our relationship with God by talking to Him. It is important to not only pray that our hearts will grow stronger in the Lord each day, but that those around us will experience the same saving grace.
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
I agree with Bobby. God does answer your prayers. They may not be at the exact time you pray or right after because God has a plan for you and your life and what He plans is perfect.
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
This is a great verse for our series on prayer – God listens, and we should be daily offering him the problems of our lives. He wants to hear from us! I think this is great motivation to spend more time in prayer than we usually do.
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
I have to say this verse really reminded me of the sermon today and the point that God wants us to pray and He wants to answer our prayers. God wanted Isaac to pray and ask for a child, and when he did God rewarded him by answering his prayer with twice the blessings — two kids!
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
its totally cool to think about what happened with Rebekah! Esau and Jacob had theirs fights, and eventually the nations of the two would become rivals, much like they were growing up and before they moved out. it is also nice to know that later they make up and forgive each other. but nonetheless, the nation of Esau and the nation of Jacob were rivals, just as the Lord said. and what the Lord says happens
It was really cool seeing the Baptisms today! Praise God for all of you who were obedient to His command!
26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.
This is interesting to see, it seems that even while they were being born Jacob was striving to recieve the birth right instead of Esau. Eventualy we will see that this incident was a sign of the future of God’s people and the fulfillment of His promise to Abraham. Praise God because He is soverign!
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
This fits perfectly with today’s sermon. God can answer our prayers if we let him, but we must not be distracted while we are praying since that is very disrespectful to our Father.
What a fantastic day at true north with 29 high school students professing their faith to our Lord and saviour (spelled correctly) Jesus Christ.
I was also proud to see my daughter Miranda baptized making all four of the Burke’s baptised by Compass.
Lets all remember our prayer commitments and add these people to that list,,,
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
Already God is saying that Esau will serve Jacob, which is very interesting since the oldest obviously was the one with the most power.
28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Here is a sin we begin to see~ we aren’t supposed to show favortism, or even have favorites. I know that if my mom showed favorites to my brother, it would devestate me. I would begin to wonder what I was doing wrong. I’m actually very grateful that God says that favoritism is wrong. Things would be very different…
The last thing I’d like to point out is this:
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
Already Jacob begins to prove his name in this verse (besides the fact that he grasped his brother’s heel when they were born).
Nice comments…God keeps His promises, God answers prayers! I am excited to see what God is going to do at True North as we begin praying everyday!
HAHAHA I could probably say that me and Sarah fought a lot in the womb as well! Mom told me all these stories about that. anyways. :D
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
Bobby, I love how you go by God’s timing! This chapter is perfect for today! The message you gave today totally applies to this verse. Isaac was consistent and prayed to God probably everyday and the Lord answered! He wants us to ask, like Bobby said, because He wants to give us what we want. How awesome is that? Of course, God may not grant what we want, because it has to be His will not just ours. The message today reminded me of Rob Biagi’s song. “God answers prayer three ways, yes, no, or not tooodaaaay” Like Bobby said, He doesn’t speak directly to us but through events in our lives, we can know and have confidence that God listens to us and answers. Praise Him forever for even listening! :D
I just like verse 11 because God said that He would bless Abraham’s offspring and He did! Just shows that whatever God says will happen and He will not take His words back! This is why we can have our faith/trust in Him!
Verse 21 is encourages us to pray! We need to be praying 10 minutes minimum a day and that is consecutive too! We need to be confident in whatever we pray will happen! There are a lot of things and people we can pray for
Baptism was amazing tonight, such a great time of celebration and rejoicing over salvation through Jesus Christ!
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
If we ask, it will be given! The Lord will answer our prayers! Prayer is amazing and works in the most incredible ways. If our prayers are about the Lord and his will, then he will answer! If we openly go to God and talk to him, we will be rewarded.
11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.
I like this verse because it shows how God blesses the descendants of the people who our faithful and obedient to Him. Abraham was a righteous man, and Isaac, his son, reped the benefits.
Our actions affect way more than just us. We affect many people who are involved in our lives, but we also affect future generations.
6 But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.
just wondering why Abraham had concubines when he had two wives
1 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.
I did not know Abraham took another wife after Sarah died. That’s interesting.
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
I know a lot of people are commenting on this verse, but it is a great verse. Like Bethany said, it fits right in with Bobby’s message today! When we pray, God listens to us! He’s there waiting at the door, wating for us to knock. If we pray to God, if we ask Him for something, He wants to give it to us! What a better incentive to pray! God will hear us and He will provide what we need! It’s amazing how God can do this! He hears everyone’s prayers from around the world all at the same time. It just blows my mind away. He’s so amazing. We need to be praying more! 10 minutes a day should be easy! Let’s make sure that we are praying daily for a good amount of time!
I really enjoyed reading about Abraham’s life! He was SO blessed because of his obedience to God. This is a perfect example of obedience! We should try to be like Abraham more, trusting God, obeying God, and serving God.
So glad I’m baptised!! :]
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
Everyone had great comments on this so I’ll basically echo: God answers prayer! He hears everything we say to Him in honest, humble prayer. Its a great enforcer of Pastor Bobby’s message today- our prayers don’t need to be fancy with all the “good” words, just humble and honest with faith in the Lord!
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
It is amazing to see the fulfilled prophecy in the Bible, and how part of this one comes true just verses later! The incredible amount of fulfilled prophecy so far (100% of the prophecies that should have come true so far did) should give us confidence that the rest of his Promises and prophecies will come true as well!
11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac
It’s great to see how God keeps his promise to Abraham through the generations of his son Isaac then Jacob and eventually Jospeh…
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
We need to pray persistently with faith! God is faithful and answers prayers. We should be praying like we are confident God will answer.
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
We need to pray to the Lord for his glory and we need to pray with faith. The Lord will answer our prayers for giving Rebekah a child what an answer to her prayers. I agree with Kelly we should be praying like we are confident that God will answet them.
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” …….34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.
It is so cool to see how God is in control and all knowing. We don’t have to worry about tomorow because God already knows what will happen and his will will be done! It is so great to know that sinful man is not in control of his own destiny but the Holy God is in control!
21Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
This verse was a great reminder about todays sermon. if we pray God will answer even if it seems like it could never happen we can’t underestimate God, because God can do the impossible!
Praise be to Jesus for all 100 people who got baptized today and are saved! :)
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LORD.
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
Wow, these are two interesting verses. First you have the inspiring verse that Issac prayed to GOD for his wife and it was answered in an amazing, amazing way. Then, you have Rebekah, who gets two kids, who become two nations fighteing in her womb. Wow. Interesting verses. I mean, I’ve heard of sibling rivalry, but this is crazy.
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
It is amazing how God fulfilled His prophecy. Later on we will finish the story of Esau and Jacob and see how God correctly prophesied that “the older will serve the younger.” We are given a hint when Esau acts on an impulse instead of realizing the importance of the birth right and swears it to Jacob.
It is also cool to see the progression of history in Genesis and watching mankind unfold from the people in the book as they descend from Abraham who was promised to be a father of nations.
23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
This verse stood out to me because it reminded me that i need to be a servant. Not only do i need to respect and serve my parents but also those who are youger or the same age as me. I need to be working on being a servant for the Lord and i can do that by serving others and being a light and giving a helping hand or encouragement. It is important that i am constantly shining for God, not a dim little beam of light but one that people can see from miles away!
And congratulations everyone who got baptized today! Im sad i couldnt be there, but i will bepraying for all of you! what a great act of obedience. keep your spiritual fervor up!!!:D
God is great,sing His praise!
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
just as Bobby has said (and others) but Isaac prayed to God and he responded. its just like scripture discussed today at church (Matt 7:7-8). Its also awesome if you read a chapter before that (Matt 6:8) it says that ‘the Father knows what you need before you ask it.’ and that is just awesome but doesn’t mean we could skip out on praying.
Vs31-32
ok, this is probably one of the dumbest/most bone-headed thugs to could do. I mean, a birthright back then was a BIG deal. This can be related to keeping our mind on heavenly things.
Im still jumping for joy with a song in my heart for seeing everybody at church and friends baptised today!! Im sooooo happy! God is so awesome! The angels are still having a party up in heaven!XD
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.
It’s surprising to see how back in the day that there could be deception between family members and how selfishness was used to gain power over the other. It’s sad to see in today’s time that this same behavoir continues among families and friends. This is a reminder to not covet what your neighbor has but to be satisfied on what God has given you.
So besides my name being in this chapter :) what really stood out to me was the rash and foolish decision of Esau to trade his birthright for some food! Yeah, he may have been super hungry, but he most likely wasn’t going to die like he claimed. He compromised. This is one thing we CAN NOT do in our Christian walk. We need to stay 100% sold out for Christ! When we compromise our values to fit in, or whatever the situation may be, we are essentially denying Christ. Lets be repping christ through everything and never give in to compromise!
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
I thought I would just throw this verse out there since we are talking about prayer right now. God hears the prayers of the righteous, but not those of the wicked. I think that is somewhere in the new testament. You will see the Lord answering prayer many times throughout the Bible. Prayer is your time to talk with God. It is so important that we are doing this daily! It’s great if were on SOTD daily, but are we praying daily. We should make a goal not only to be on SOTD every day, but to pray after or before you do SOTD.
Question!
How come back earlier in Genesis, God said no one will live longer than 120 years, but Abraham lived to be 175 years old?
21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
Like others are saying, God answers prayers if they are part of his will or something to give him Glory! We need to take to heart and put to action what Pastor Bobby has been preaching these past two weeks about prayer! Everyone lets get ten minutes a day (=
This is a great chapter that goes along with the sermons we have had on praying. Whatever we pray God will answer it if it is in His will. Also, we need to pray when we are not sure what is going on like Rebekah does. Let’s all start praying at least 10 min a day and have a revival at our high schools!
There are so many things that have happened so far in the OT that makes us wonder what these people were thinking!! They give up their wives, they disobey what God has told them and they deceive better than anyone I know. Beside all this, they were people that knew they served a powerful God. They prayed to him with more faith than many of us do today. As Pastor Bobby said, God does answer prayers and he loves to bless us when we call on him within his will.
