Genesis 1

The Creation of the World

1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. (ESV)

Welcome to 2009! In the beginning of the New Year we are going back to the beginning of the Bible! This is a very important chapter about God creating the world in six literal days and resting on the seventh. This is the pattern for our seven day week that we are still practicing today. I hope that you will start 2009 out with us by reading through Genesis together!

  2. Old man new heart, brother of Whitney's husband and Whitney too! says:

Thanks Pastor Bobby! Isn’t God’s revelation about Himself the most life changing (and life creating) words ever written? The six days of recorded history here reveal His glory and are summarized in Psalm 19:1-2 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.”

If Genesis 1 reveals His glory through creation, what then is our response? Let’s read the rest of the Book together and learn about His character, His call to repentance and faith and obedience to His commands. And then, with that knowledge, under the Holy Spirit He gives to all of His children, let’s do what He says! Glory to God for His perfect plan and the revelation that comes through the Bible! He wants us to be disciplined so He can grow our faith through reading and studying about Him on a regular basis: His word will work to sanctify us. Let this reading plan be a part of that growth and may He use it to glorfiy Himself and bless us all, His forgiven enemies through our knowledge of Him!

  3. Rebekah Foreman 2009 LET'S SHARE THE WORD says:

    Genesis 1
It tells us how much God thought about the World. He knew exactly what he wanted. And He wanted to reveal His glory through everything He created. God wanted the plants and animals to spread and keep growing like He wants us to spread the Gospil and have people’s love grow for Him.
    Rebekah KEEP POSTING

  4. Dan Lauder says:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The Bible is clear that God is the Creator. This means that he holds the rights to us and gets to make the rules. Colossians 1:16b says, “all things were created by him and for him.” We were created for God, God wasn’t created for us. Thus we should respond by humbly submitting to his Lordship and by obeying what he says to do. This by the way is a big reason atheists and evolutionists don’t want to consider the possibility of God existing despite the abundant evidence from the sciences that point to a Designer. They want to keep living the way they want to.

  5. Our cultural doesn’t want to believe that God created the world because of the implications that come with that. This reminder of who our God is and the authority He possesses should motivate us to live lives that are pleasing to Him and that share His name with all we come in contact with. God made this world therefore He runs this world and in time He is sending Christ back to rule…lets take the precious time we have to share the good news and make sure we fulfill our job!

Happy New Years everyone! Hope to see you today at frisbee!

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

I like how the first verse of the Bible comes with a strong impact, shows the power of the Lord that He created the heavens and the earth. I can’t believe how many people reject this verse, even some who claim to be Christians. I agree with Dan is because they choose not to follow Christ because they are only focused on this life here on earth.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

This verse amazes me so much, God said only words and those words things happen like light appearing. Just proves how powerful God is!

  7. Beth Lauder says:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The very first verse in the Bible is an excellent place to start when sharing the gospel with someone. Since God is the creator of all things, He has ownership over us and gets to make the rules. God’s rule is that all of us have perfect holiness like Himself. Since we fall short of His standard we are separated from God and in need of a Savior to restore us to a right relationship with Him. It is amazing to me that the first verse of the first book of the Bible points to our need for Jesus to come to earth and live the perfect life for us that we never could live. I am so excited to begin a new year with the Lord!

  8. Cameron says:

5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

today in more liberal Christianity some people are saying that God created the heavens and the earth where one day equals a billion years or whatever. they do this to fit the claims of science that says the universe is 6 billion years old. how do they even know that? we have an accurate account of God’s Word that says He created in six days. there was morning then evening, one day. this verse makes it clear that each day is a day. this chapter just shows that God is in control, and He created the heavens and the earth

  9. The New Years Nacho says:

    Happy New Year!!!!

This is so cool that we are starting in Genesis. This chapter is so great because it just shows the power of God. He simply speaks and this incredible world comes into existence.

Like Pastor Bobby said, this chapter gives evidence for the 6 literal day creation pattern.

  10. Mike says:

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.

“According to its kind” is a phrase used a lot throughout this chapter. it shows that God is a God of order, not chaos. The world was not made randomly and without a pattern but instead was formed according to a plan, with everything exactly where it should be in an orderly fashion. This should serve as a reminder that the world was not created by chance, and it should also give us confidence that the Creator who is able to form the whole world by merely speaking and maintains control of it all, keeping it in perfect order, is in control of our lives and will work everything out according to His perfect plan.

  11. Matt says:

wow… it is 2009 i cant believe it!!

this chapter was amazing!!!!!! i read this while in the morning sun lying on the grass watching all my friends playing uf and it almost seemed like god was creating the elemnts of the earth before me.. our god is sooooo good and big and awesome!

i dont want to focus on a new year but on a new day god has given me!!

  12. christopher eriksen says:

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Its amazing how God can just speak things into existence, and that He created a world of perfect order, not chaos like Mike said. We need to constantly be praising Him and trusting Him for how great He is, and submit to all the He commands because He is our Master.

  13. Sickly B :D says:

mmmmmmm great comment Mike! Those verses do point out that God is NOT a God of chaos but a God that has a plan. He planned our ENTIRE lives out and the lives of the animals. He’s so powerful and great, really nothing that we can comprehend. It’s also a big reminder that whatever disaster might happen here on Earth, it’s all apart of God’s plan so we don’t need to worry about it.
Oh and Mrs. Lauder, I agree with you. Genesis one is a great place to start when you go out there to evangelize. I just don’t understand how people don’t believe in God. The whole entire world bases our days on the system that God created. We have seven day weeks because God made it that way! It shown clearly here in Genesis. Maybe we should show the lost these verses….
OH and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Lets make this the best SOTD year yet!…if that makes sense. :D

  14. michelle [maranatha] says:

Happy new year everyone:) Im definatley looking forward to a great year, growing in my faith and becoming more bold. MARANATHA

Everytime i read Genesis 1 I am in awe of how miraculous God is. It is amazing how He created night and day- it was so simple to Him. He placed the stars in the sky. He is so amazing! He is so great, so awesome, so wonderful! Praise God for His beautiful creation! Every beautiful detail is from God- every detail in a flower, every detail in a sunset, the perfect waves to surf on:), clouds and rain and sunshine…God created it all! He created us in His image so that we may live to praise His holy name. He is so wonderful! I get sooo stoked when i read about and realize how amazing God is! He is so big and mighty and deserves all of our praise and attention and glory. I am soo looking forward to meeting my creator face to face one day. i would be in so much awe, i would fall on my face and worship my Lord. Maranatha; Lord come quickly.

  15. Shane says:

I have fun reading this chapter because I find it interesting about God just creating things and the order he did them in. It makes me think how he made light first but he didn’t make the sun until later on. God saw everything in the end and that it was very good.

  16. Diana says:

First off, I LOVE Genesis! It’s one of the base books, in my opinion, because it tells those who believe in God where they came from and basically documents the beginning of the earth. So appropriate we’re starting with the beginning of the Bible in the beginning of a new year! I actually just read though the whole book a couple weeks ago but I’m excited to do it now on SOTD.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

We’re created in the image of God! We are so valuable to Him, and we were each created in the same way – in His image. As His children we should never forget our significance. This whole first chapter reflects God’s powerfulness and also His wisdom. All we have to do is look at creation and we can see what an awesome God we serve. He put everything together – the days, weeks, years, animals, plants, water, land – everything is fit to work together, just as all things will work together for the good of those who love Him.

  17. spence says:

Good way to start the beginning of the New Year a refresher on how the earth was created!
I noticed that every time God created something he looked back on it and named it good. The earth, the light, the birds, the ground, the vegetation, the animals, the green plants, and humans were created in God’s sight as good. Sometimes we don’t understand why something happens or why God created something, but it seems down to the smallest detail he created everything with his infinite power and knowledge just the way it should be.
Happy New Year and sorry I missed the frisbee it slipped my mind.

  18. DB says:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Just like the others, its amazing how the first verse in the Bible says this, and yet people will go to all lengths to try and disprove this!

Just look around! How could all of this happen by…. an explosion?

  19. hunter says:

I agree with DB, everything happening by an explosion seems so farfetched compared to the truthful wisdom of God’s Word. Evolution is just a lie from Satan, and unfortunately a lot of people have bought into it.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

When God made everything it was great. Everything lived in peace and opperated as it was supposed to, with no sickness, death, or hate. Then sin entered the world and removed the “goodness” from God’s creation; animals started to eat eachother, man was forced to work to survive, and everything pretty much went down hill. We are the same way, the more we let sin in our lives the more we are ruining God’s chances for using us for His glory. Everytime we sin we are making life harder for ourselves and are just taking another step away from God’s goodness, and instead taking another step towards death.

  20. Eric Walker says:

SORRY! Wasnt able to get on SOTD for a while. I was in hawaii on vacation but im back :)

WOW!! This passage shows just how great and awesome our God is. Only he can create our world in just 7 DAYS!!! Our God is great and holy and mighty in all ways. Praise the Lord and give him thanks for he is GOOOOOD!!!!!

  21. laura johnson says:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

i thought this verse was cool, it shows how God is almighty and powerful and created the earth. it’s amazing to look around outside at all the things that God created.

  22. Melissa says:

I love this chapter!!! Its shows God’s power and how he can make things happen just by saying it. It is amazing how he can create so many creatures and such a big world in seven days!! As I read this, I think about all of the people who believe in evolution…. its so sad!

  23. Beth says:

The fact that God made us puts Him in charge. He created us, so He gets to make the rules of how people get to heaven. Before break, I heard a girl in one of my classes telling someone that church is not a place you should feel guilty and that as long as you believe in something and try to be a good person, you will be okay. She was playing God and making up rules that clearly are not Biblical. God set one and only one way to be saved through His Son Jesus Christ. When I read about how God created everything I feel very glad that I have the safety of salvation.

  24. Hannah says:

This is such an awesome way to start our year! This whole chapter is so important because it shows how God planed everything out and set the way things are for a reason! This chapter just gives me so much confidence in the Lord and truth to what the Bible is telling us. I love when I read this, so amazed by how God created our world and shows me how truly powerful he is. We tend to forget how big God is….it freaks me out! Haha[: I am just SO THANKFUL the Lord has kept me alive another year on his beautiful creation!

  25. it's Daniel Yo! says:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

These verses are actually the hardest to believe for a non-christian. when you are evangelizing it is a great tactic to actually start with the begining, because if you can believe the first 5 words of the Bible then the rest is possible.

  26. vsunshine (Psalms 130:5-6) says:

First book of the Bible on the first day of 2009!!! This is such a great book that is also a huge help for us who deal with evolutionism in school. Even this first chapter clearly states that God created the world. But how fortunate we are to not only be made by Gods own hands (instead of being speaked to life like everything else He made) but we are made in His likeness! Wow that is a humbling thing to know!
As for me I watch and hope for the Lord!

  27. Daniel's Momma is BACK Yo!! says:

    Happy new Year Everyone!!

    “In the beginning God created…”

Many non-Christians beleive in God and also beleive that He made everything, but they dont beleive that the bible is true. Or they beleive in Christ, but they beleive in evolution! It is very simple, if you beleive the first five words of the bible then you must beleive the rest. It is all or nothing. I’m “all-in” …are you? :o)

  28. Allen McAnlis says:

This is definetly the way to start off a book. English teachers always tell you to start a paragraph with a good header to attract the audiances attention and this is the best one ever made!! Just the fact that God can speak the words and create something is amazing. We are so lucky that God has chosen us to be apart of His perfect and amazing plan. God bless 2009! Happy New Years everyone:).

  29. brandy crane says:

yay the beggining of the Bible!

i liked how each day God added to what he had previously done. on the first day he created light, on the second he created the skys and water, on the third day the land seas and vegetaion, fourth day sun, moon and the stars, fifth day the fish and the birds, sixth day men and women, and on the seventh day God rested.

    “2009 so fineee”

  30. Tyler likes this children’s book about the creation story that I’ve read to him so many times, it was great to actually read Genesis 1!

What stands out to me most from this chapter is how everything is under God’s authority and obeys His command. He spoke a word and complex things came into existence. Wow, our God is awesome! Who can compare to being the Creator of world?!

  31. New year, New day, Clean slate….lets start it off right and keep it goin!

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Need proof that God has always been around as triun …God doesn’t say I’m going to make man in my image…which makes perfect sence…he says our image which implies Father, Son, Holy Spirit… This is so exciting to me because this gives more validity to the rest of scripture!

  32. Jacob Antoun says:

Wow DVW…. I was gonna say that same thing!! Haha, I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that verse 26 said “Our image” instead of “My image”. In the first book of the Bible it is already hinting clues of a Trinitarian God!

  33. BreAnna Moore says:

Wow we have an amazing God. This passage out of all things comforts me so much! How can I be worried or anxious after reading this chapter! Our God is an all-powerful and soverign God, He is in absolute control. Not only is He in control of everything, but He MADE everything! Sometimes we just kinda read through the creation of the world without understanding how truly amazing our God is and how we should fear Him!
Happy New Year everyone, I dont know if it is just me but this seems like the longest day ever haha!

  34. Jenaeee (= says:

Wow David and Jacob thats amazing i never caught that!

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

We really have something to live up to: God. We have to try and be holy just as he did because when we are created, we are perfect. As human beings we screw that up so we really have to try to be just like God.

  35. A follower of Christ says:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth

Wow, just like that. God is soooooooooo, powerful. Its mind boggling to even think of how much power He has. Now at the other end of the spectrum, How can scientists think that there is no God? SO this just happened? SO an explosion created life? Usually don’t explosions destroy life? And also, how do some Christians think that God used evolution to create all this when the Bible clearly states that God spoke and it came into existence. But seriously, God is sooooooo powerful I think we need to fear Him more. What does proverbs say, the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. I think that would be an awesome New Years resolution.

  36. Ian says:

A really important chapter. These first few chapters of Genesis, in fact, are one reason to believe that the whole Bible to be true. It actually makes sense even outside of the Bible that the physical universe and life was *created* and didn’t happen by chance. All we have to do is look around and we can see the many complex, living things, including ourselves! Evidence that the Bible is true, I think, because how could all this complex life evolve out of nothing?

A great chapter. One of my favorites.

  37. Alison says:

    I’m a day late…sorry…but I figured I’d post anyway.

21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

It just irks me so much when people say “What if God created the world then started evolution?” If they would just read the BIBLE, they would see that God created every creature according to its kind- he didn’t set the world in motion then let evolution take over. Its good to see that the very first chapter in the Bible also provides us with a good reference point for defending our beliefs.

  38. Andrew Richards says:

There is no other explanation for how everything came into being. God is the only explanation for it all. It is so amazing that we serve an almighty, all powerful God who created the entire universe in seven days. One week. I can barely do my normal chores every week and let alone do something this amazing. How can we not fear God?

  39. PaYtOn :] says:

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

It is amazing to see that some one (GOD) created everything, the seen and unseen. God is amazing and we shold be letting everyone know that. :]

  40. Evan McKee says:

It is so amazing that God was able to create the entire universe. It is impossible to even comprehend all that is out there, and it’s incomprehensible that he could even think of all of the stuff that is out there, and make it work so well. I know a lot about cells and DNA, but how does DNA know to “unzip” itself to make a copy? the more I studied biology last year the more amazing God’s mind seemed to me. It’s beginning to be the same thing in chem with things like the atom. the more I learn about the world around me, the more God amazes me.

  41. M@x says:

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

I totally agree with Evan! It’s so amazing He made EVERYTHING there is! Everything in the universe was made by Him. Also like Evan said, Biology is so confusing and complex. There is only one explanation of how things were made, and it’s explained here in Genesis. It’s so complex we can’t fullly understand it! This makes evolutionists and all those who don’t believe in creation foolish, because there is SO much evidence that there was a creator!

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

If this isn’t proof enough. The more you think about it, and if you look at science, the more it points to God! Matter cannot be created or destroyed. So how could nothing explode and become everything? The only way nothing could become something is with some divine intervention! I heard in a movie about creation that the first law of thermodynamics (i’m sounding really fancy here) is that everyhting goes from order to disorder. So how could nothing become everyting? It can’t! Creation is the only credible explanation! If you see a watch, you know it was designed and made by a watch maker. If you look at the universe, you know there is a universe maker. It’s all pointing to God!!

  42. Ashlynnn says:

This is so wonderful to read, i remember learning about the days of creation in grade school but i havent gone back for a while and read it myself.

It was great to read how God amde everything so precise and with a purpose…and when He was done with His creation he knew that it was good. I thank God for all the beautiful creation around us:D

  43. Curtis says:

it must have been amazing to see the garden before the fall of man… when everything was “good” according to God’s standards. nothing on this earth now could probably even compare to the majesty and glory of that garden.

  44. leana says:

To think that everything around us was created in six days is absolutely prodigious. Our intricate beautiful world made by the command of the Almighty. When I was little I remember being taught about creation and how God made you and me and the ground and the sky while I was sitting on bed. I am thrilled to come back to the start being older to now fully understand the bedtime story I once knew.

  45. Leah says:

It’s truly amazing how God created everything on this earth in less than 7 days. It far surpasses anything I or any other human could do, but not for the Lord. This just shows how powerful our Father is and how we should rightfully fear him.
