Hebrews 11

By Faith

11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. 20 By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. 21 By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

32 And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. 35 Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. 36 Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— 38 of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. (ESV)

  1. Pastor Bobby says:

What a great chapter to learn how to practically put our faith into action. Thank God for giving us so many good examples and for commending what they did so we can do it too!

I remember when Pastor Mike preached a sermon series through this chapter called Ambitious Faith. Since then, that phrase has always stuck with me and my mindset is to do big things for God!

6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Faith is the only way that we can please God. We can’t try harder to be good. We have to trust in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ that took our place.

Another key aspect is that we’ve got to believe God is good. We must remember that there is a reward when we are seeking God with all of our heart! Let’s get after him today!

  2. Stacy Perkins says:

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

There had not been such a think as a resurrection to this point in human history. Yet Abraham had such great faith, that he even said to the servants who accompanies him and Isaac, when they got to the point of having the servants wait while Abraham was going to go and sacrifice Isaac, “We will worship and then we will come back to you,” (Genesis 22). He had such an incredible faith that he knew God would deliver them through it, and he AND Isaac would return. I seek the Lord for faith so unwavering that nothing could shake me. No circumstance, no challenge, no demise or loss of relationship, no temptation…and I know that this kind of faith doesn’t just HAPPEN. It is given us by God as we cultivate a relationship with Him, by studying Who He is, what pleases and blesses Him, and then DOING it by living in obedience and abandoning our SELVES. Lord, I am at Your disposal, today and always.

  3. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like this whole chapter.

This whole chapter talks about what faith can do. It kept people from death brought down city walls. Faith has done all this and yet I am still scared of each day. I need to think of what GOD has done for those who had faith. I need to pray for faith that can move the mountains. I should think of what GOD has done for everyone of HIS children, I am no different HE will provide me with everything I could ever need.

    • Tanner its encouraging to see you posting early everyday in the morning, Keep up the good work. I will be praying that you have great faith in God in what he has done, is doing, and will do in your life!

  4. Cameron says:

25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

In Moses’ time, he could have abandoned his people are returned to live a normal life in Egypt. He may have been able to be restored to his former position. But instead, he chose to obey God and lead God’s people. Because of this decision, Moses chose God’s will over the pleasures of earthly treasures in Egypt. For the Hebrews, their identification with Jesus Christ would have made them outcasts. They would have been mocked and persecuted by the Jewish people of the day. Today, as Christians, we will be mocked and persecuted for evangelism and living a holy life.

But this verse really encouraged me, because of the part about the “fleeting pleasures of sin”. Sin doesn’t bring joy and true happiness. Whenever I commit sin, I feel guilty after, and wish I could “relive” the situation so that I could not sin. Rather than chose to sin and do what the world wants, I need to have faith, like Moses did, that God is where true happiness lies, and that He is better than anything else. I need to forsake my sin, and obey God’s commands. The rewards that He has waiting for me in heaven are better than ANYTHING that this world has to offer!

  5. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

Later than usual comment, woo hoo! :D
26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

The things of Heaven will be a million times better than the things of this Earth…and even just doing good for the Lord feels fantastic! The suffering here can be totally worth it when you think of the things of Heaven! Treasures are awaiting me…and there could be more if I just glorify Him and trust in what He says! It’s still a process learning how to let Him take control of everything annnd to not take it into my own hands. God is powerful…this whole chapter gives me good reasons on why I should keep the faith! All of these people mentioned in here have been remembered forever because of their faith in God..that’s so cool to me! God, build up my faith so that III may have a faith that can move mountains!

  6. Connor T :D says:

    Good morning!!!

    Verse 39 & 40
“And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.”

God will not reward us on earth a fraction as greatly as He will in Heaven. When we do good things here on earth, do not expect something great in return. If you are doing it for God, then you will be storing up treasures in Heaven. That is the great reward, not anything on earth that can perish is fire or be stolen. We will receive treasures far better than anything we can imagine.

  7. Beth Lauder says:

7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Ahh..the Heroes of the Faith! This is an excellent chapter full of godly examples of men and women who persevered in their faith. We can turn here often for inspiration to do what is right when tempted to stop standing for Christ!

Verse 7 stood out to me because Noah has spurred me on in my faith many times over the past decade. Can you imagine what he thought when God told him to build an ark to protect him from the coming flood? It did not rain for 100 years and there was Noah building a giant boat and telling his neighbors to prepare for the coming wrath that would drown all who wouldn’t repent. He was ridiculed, shunned, and gossiped about relentlessly. People thought he had lost his mind. But Noah feared God more than man. He live a life of obedience to God, even when what he was asked to do did not make sense. Noah’s obedience saved his life and the lives of his entire family. I feel like Noah sometimes when I share the gospel. People look at me like I am crazy to think that God’s wrath is coming. They tell me that they haven’t believed in God their whole life and that things have been going well for them, so how could God possibly send them to hell someday. Even though I have been gossiped about, yelled at, and cut off by certain friends, examples like Noah spur me on to continue to fear God over man and share the gospel with the lost. I am grateful for passages of Scripture like Hebrews 11 that show me godly men and women who have persevered in their faith under much more intense opposition than I face so that I can be encouraged to continue to do what is right.

  8. Dave Hosford praying for revival before He comes says:

Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

Let’s all live for things promised but not seen! Looking forward to our real home in Heaven! And Lord, please come soon and find us ready!

  9. Waiting4Hisplan says:

Hebrews 11:25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

This verse truly shows what the correct path is and what the wrong path is. Sometimes I think we like to push off the idea that God can see what we are doing and He knows that we chose/choose the wrong path, the easy path of sin, rather than become ‘unpopular’ for living for God. But what we must realize is that God truly knows and He is asking us to follow Him and be His, not the world’s. Romans 12: 2 and 9 states that we “should not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove what is good and acceptable and the perfect will of God…to abhor what is evil…and cling to what is good.” We need to accept that following God comes with being mocked by non-christians, and we need to accept that that is way better than conforming to the sins of the world. God specifically instructs us to not conform to the sins of this world, shouldn’t we listen??

I choose to be mistreated by the world with the people of God, than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. How many of us can say that? Can you?

  10. Kyle Dallape says:

6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

This verse really stood out to me because it’s all about how we need to trust God in everything. In the few, but amazing, years ive been a Christian, trusting God has been the hardest thing for me to do. Why you may ask? Becuase I’m not an easy truster and it took me a while to trust God. But when I did, and let Him have my whole life, and gave everything up to Him, and since then, it has been the best years of my life :)

  11. danielle says:

32 And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

I really liked these verses because it shows the power of faith. THROUGH FAITH men of God were able to accomplish incredible tasks. God is all-powerful and it clearly shows in these verses that those on His side can truly rise above it all and accomplish amazing things.

  12. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Such an encouraging chapter, full of great examples of people of faith! God is faithful indeed, and we too have to trust him. How else do we believe that he works out all things for the good of those who love him? Where there is a lack of faith, we leave room for panic and anxiety, not surrendering all things to our God and putting our trust in him. So many people want to SEE before they BELIEVE.. but you must believe first and then you will see. Verse 1 explains exactly what faith is: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

2 Corinthians 5:7 “We live by faith, not by sight.”

  13. j. watkins says:

In all of these examples, there is a theme of trusting in God.
Faith, it seems, is putting your life in God’s hands, knowing that he has a plan for you, and that it will work out for good.
That’s what all of these righteous people did, and that’s what we should be doing today.

  14. Dominic Scarmardo (Dana!!) says:

13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

Faith is a tricky thing and lack of it is what causes a lot of people to fall away from Christianity or just plain reject it. Hebrews 11 is a great chapter about faith, and these verses say that these people saw what was good to come and, even though they knew it was far away, still followed God and kept their faith. That is the only thing that keeps me going sometimes in my walk with God: knowing that, even though it’s tough now, there is something much better waiting for me. It may not be “scientifically proven,” but there is a God, and if I serve Him and follow Him while I’m here on Earth, He will reward me when I die. That is worth every bit of suffering and persecution on this earth in my opinion.
    Maranatha!! (Come and get me!)

  15. LG says:

Hebrews 11 was all about doing things by faith!!! The chapter shares many examples of faith!! But there was one example that stood out to me the most. That was the example of Abraham. When Abraham was willing to sacrafice his sons life to God that was a real example of faith!!!

  16. Max says:

Verse one gives a great definition of faith. And then it talks about how O.T people were saved. Kinda cool, cuz i’ve wondered about that. Then it talks about all the awesome things people did through faith. Having faith in Jesus even though we can’t see Him is important. With our full trust in God, we can do all things for His glory!

  17. Summer Staeb says:

Such a great chapter!!! All of these people are such great examples of the faith that I should be exemplifying!
13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

Reading this verse was such an encouragement to me! These men and women lived their lives through faith, and through faith they performed and accomplished amazing things. They knew that they were not working for a reward to be received here on earth, but a heavenly reward of far greater value. They realized that their citizenship was in heaven, as is mine. I know that I am not of this world, and I am eagerly waiting for the day when Jesus returns to call me home! It is my prayer that I would be demonstrating this kind of faith in my own life by backing it up with action. Faith alone means nothing as James 2:17 says. I don’t want to be a hypocrite but I want my faith to be shown through the way that I live!

  18. Boyd Jorden says:

13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

I love all of the examples of Godly men and women in this chapter; seeing them lined up one after the other and remembering each of their stories really drives home what amazing things God does in our live when we put our full faith and confidence in Him. But the verses above really stood out to me because they’re an awesome description of what I want my aim to be in my Christian walk. I want to live a life that aims for heavenly things and pleases God so that He is not ashamed to be called my God.

  19. Emily Knudsen says:

25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

I liked this verse because at times in our lives we are tempted to do the wrong thing. But if we choose to withstand the temptation God will reward us! And by doing this we will also set better examples as christians to non-believers so that we may represent Christ in the best way possible. I pray that i will not fall into temptation and be thankful to be persecuted. :)

  20. iKYLE JOHNSON! says:

Great chapter all of these example of people were mentioned during the era of Genesis & Exodus displayed a lot of faith! we should strive to be like them!

25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin

talking about Moses! Moses was apart of Pharoah’s family even though he was not borned that way. So you could say he was adopted into the family. Moses trusted that God could get the Israelites out of Egypt and persevered
through tough trials where he put his life on the line! Moses could have disobeyed God by not worrying about getting the Israelites out of Egypt and lived a life of pleasure apart of Pharoah’s family.

I feel this being similar to my life. Over Spring Break I am supposed to go to Hawaii, but I decided to opt out on going. I’ve never been there and I would love to go but I would miss celebrating Easter and I knew I wouldn’t do that in Hawaii! The reason why God wanted the Israelites out of Egypt was so they could worship Him! Like me I choose not to go so I could worship God! I also wanted to chill with some friends and relax!

  21. michelle cammarano says:

Wow, this whole entire chapter is incredible- the faith chapter!!!
What i LOVED about the first three verses was how it explains that faith is not based off of something that is necessarily visible- believing is not always seeing. I was obviously not there when the Lord created the world, yet i have faith that it was He who created it and not some comet or whatever others believe in. When verse three says that what is seen did not make the earth, i get so amazed. Just think and look around. Nothing, no one, on this earth helped create the earth!! No one helped create the oceans and the sky and the air. I dont know who God is physically, but i know Him personally, and i believe that He created the world and all that is in it. Just look up at the sky (like Bobby said), that in itself is proof that some great power had to create this world- and it was not a crater!!!!
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going

So i was sitting in a Bible lit class today when the teacher asked “if you were to be in the same position Abraham was in, would you leave everything you had and go to a place you had no idea about and have faith in God?” At first i was thinking “well, thats kind of tough, it would be scary to not know where your going” but then i thought again after hearing Brooke say of course “wow, what am i thinking, of course i would…look at how many examples in scripture about how God fulfills His promises- all of them!” Without a doubt i would go anywhere, anytime, and do anything for God. I just finished re reading Genesis with my bible lit class and i must say, God is faithful and he does provide and He does do what He says He is gonna do!!! I admire Abraham for his faith in the Lord.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son,

Once again, Abraham fully trusts the Lord! I would find it to be a struggling decision of sacrificing my only child because the Lord told me to. I would find it so confusing! But look at how faithful Abraham is the Lord and look at how the Lord rewards him for his faith- generations and generations of people!!!incredible if i do say so myself. I dont think that the Lord tested Abraham to see if his faith was strong only, but i think that he tested Abraham to see if Abraham would realize that even though he had been blessed with a son in his old age, God could take his blessings away at any time, and abraham would have to agree to that!Once again, I admire abraham for his faith

and mmm, this chapter goes on and on about different stories in the Bible about how faith in God brought them through their trials and through difficult decisions. Instead of worrying about what will happen to me, i am going to be more focused on what i can do for the Lord and how i can willingly obey His commandments and follow His will for my life. I do not want to do anything that will get in the way of ruining His perfect plan. I think that God fulfilled some pretty amazing things. From bringing Joseph out of jail and to leading a nation over his brothers and reuniting their family to fulfill Gods promise to sparing Daniels life in the lions den- God can do anything. There is no reason to think otherwise!!

Maranatha- i cannot wait to be with God- the God who fulfilled all of His promises, and still is!

  22. =) Jeff Modugno 2010 says:

who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

This is a cool chapter. It makes me think about faith and how important it is to have faith in God. If I am worrying then I should read this chapter. In this chapter and verse you can see all the things that God did with people that had faith in him. At times I can get worried about college and what job I am going to going to get. I need to remember that it is all in God’s plan and I just need to trust in him. I am not in control God is so I need to let him be in control of my life in every thing.

  23. Meisha Preston says:

9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

This is how I want to live. I want to live here as though in a foreign land. I want to always be looking forward to heaven, the city that God built. I can’t wait to one day live in the New Jerusalem. This world is not my home. For my citizenship is in heaven and I eagerly await my Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  24. bill says:

25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin

This is a good verse because we shouldnt give in to sin, because all that it will do is lead to unhappiness and an eternity of misery. We need to live Godly lives.

  25. Riley Hancock says:

12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

even though we are good as dead God still loves us that he gave his son so that we may have eternal life. We need to be more like him and love the people we dislike.

  26. summer thomas says:

I liked read this because, it shows that faith goes a long way, and can take you many different places.

  27. Murphy Danahy lowly servant of the living GOD says:

15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

This is a great verse. Here GOD shows us that we are not from this world, and we are from a heavenly place that GOD has created. Therefore we should not live as though we are from this world, but from another. From heaven.

  28. Melissa Cox says:

7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Noah’s faith always blows me away. At a time when no one may have ever even SEEN rain, he told everyone that a huge flood was coming and started building a giant boat to put every kind of animal into. He and his family boarded the boat with the animals before the flood even began. Noah must have been the target of tons of ridicule, but he trusted God and obeyed. I want to have a faith more like that of Noah!

  29. Alison says:

1:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

I am certain of what I do not see, and therefore am filled with hope! I desire everyday to live in a way that displays that hope and makes people wonder about what’s different! I love the saying: Preach the gospel every day- if necessary, use words.

  30. Marissa Ramirez says:

I remember mt comment yesterday talking about faith and this chapter was spot on about that. Even though I am a soph. its not that long until I am in college. I know I might be stressed about that and all I can do is but my trust in God to lead me down the right path. Lastly whatever I do is for his glory. I hope its not too wet tom. Drive safe.

  31. Crystal says:

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

This is a great chapter about faith. It is really cool to read about how much faith people throughout the Bible had. I also like how it says what faith is. I need to work on understanding faith more and trusting in God.

  32. Zach V says:

11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.

Faith is true belief. But if you have faith your actions will follow your faith.

I have a prayer request. I’ve been sick for a while and I would really love for you to pray for me. Thanks.

  33. Collin Sellers says:

39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

I Like these verses especially, because of how it reminds me to set my heart on things of God and not of the world. It also reminds me of how temporary things we desire are here on earth compared to the treasure that God has stored up for us in Heaven!

  34. payton :D says:

What an awesome chapter about faith!
I see soooo many awesome things that happend throughout the bible because people believe. In the bible it talks about how faith in God can move the mountains! That is how great God is that He can do anything, that may seem impossible to us but is just a sinch(don’t think this is a word, but thats ok) to God. :]

***A LITTLE FAITH NEVER HURT ANYONE SO WHY NOT GIVE GOD ALL THE FAITH!!!**

  35. Shelby Sawyer says:

I enjoyed reading about all of these people who were rewarded because of there faith in God! It is so encouraging to read about all of these Godly examples, it reminds me to always have faith and trust on the Lord even when things get tough!

  36. Jacob Upton HE>i says:

These verses are all about faith, and what it means to have faith and what to do with faith. We should have faith in God, that he is in control and that whatever happens, happens for a reason. Every Godly man has had faith in God, and everyone recieves faith from God. So thank God for faith, and giving his son to us, so we can have faith.

  37. Bryan Sonksen says:

    I read…

It was great reading this chapter and seeing great examples of faith lived out in extraordinary ways by people from the Bible. God has empowered us in the same way and sometimes in even greater ways (as we have the Holy Spirit) and yet we do not live in as much faith as them. If we have the Spirit all of the time, shouldn’t we be living holier lives? I pray that God would help me with my trust in Him.

  38. Gabriel Voris says:

This chapter was just all about faith. It taught me how important faith is when it comes to being a Christian. If I claim to be a man of God I need to make sure that I have faith in the Lord.

  39. Evan McKee says:

40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

It is so awesome that we get it so easy. knowing how much easier it is for us makes it hard to be ungrateful enough to fall into sin.

  40. Anita says:

This was a great chapter about faith..=)
but what i really like, and i kno its small
    but…
    BY FAITH
11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

even before i read this whole chapter, my dad told me to read that verse when i just became a christian…and everytime i go to this one place plz in the bath it has that and i always read it:)

    • Anita says:

3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

and i always like this one!!!!!

  41. Jackson Dahl says:

11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

The author of Hebrews goes in depth through much of the old testament, talking about people doing all sorts of incredible things by faith. They trusted in the Lord that he would allow them and help them to do the (many of the times, otherwise unthinkable) things. It is so clear that as a Christian I need to be constantly living by faith, trusting the Lord that he will give me the strength to do things. As verse 6 says, I can’t please God unless I am living by faith! I want to be pleasing the Lord in everything I do, so I need to do everything I do through faith in him! Though I have not seen him face to face, I know that he is with me always, and I long for the day that I do get to see my Lord in heaven!

  42. angela voris says:

3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

this whole chapter is just great and how it talks about faith in the Lord. This verse shows that so the things we see are not made by human hands, like the Eareth, that God created it all and we belive. It just reminds me of how we can’t see God but we stil put of lives in his hands and put our faith in him.

  43. Maddie Nadeau says:

25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

i love this chapter! The chapter is all about faith, but so is our walk with God. Our walk with Him should be all about faith! This is a great passage because it shows just how looking beyond things of this world, beyond sins and pleasures of the flesh, we are rewarded and saved by Jesus Christ. Having faith is so important and if we don’t have faith our relationship with Christ won’t be a true one. I really need to work on having faith and trusting in the Lord, my God.

  44. Garrett says:

Faith is on of the most piwerfull thing in god cause being a christain I’d about having faith trust and love Jesus cause . Jesus is the only way to heaven and the only way to heaven is to have faith in him cause Jesus wants your love and to worship him an praise him.

  45. Austin Jones says:

    Hebrews 11:25
choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

A while back a kid asked me if I enjoy persecution and getting picked on. My response was that the bible talks about how persisting through the trials and persecutions is for the benefit. It talks about how we will be rewarded of our unashamed stand for Jesus Christ. This verse directly adresses that same issue. It says they chose to be persecuted instead of conforming to the sin of the world. I’m praying that students would stand strong and endure through the trials and that they would not be discouraged.

  46. Ambitious Faith!

This is the only kind of faith, the hope for which is unseen, the true faith that actually affects the way you walk and talk.

Moses chose to separate himself from the riches of Egypt ‘by faith’! Now doesn’t that seem like what we do: not participating in ungodly activities, fully giving ourselves to the Lords service, etc…

Why do we do this? Because true faith motivates us…
God has set forth his promise: the Gospel = restored relationship with God, eternal life, great rewards.

This promise causes us to not sin. Because we believe: God hates sin, and is worthy of our greatest efforts than we won’t sin.

I want to have this true faith in my life, and I will know I have it by the actions or the fruit I am producing. Convicted…

Thank you God for creating within me faith in you. All for your glory!

  47. christopheriksen says:

25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

This is a really cool verse because although it might seem painful at first to face tough persecution, in the end it will be so much better than the punishment for the fleeting pleasures of sin. I pray that I would truly desire God over fleeting pleasures and be willing and ready to face persecution. I also pray that this wouldn’t just be a thought in my mind but rather action; I pray that I would actively take a stand in the face of opposition rather than avoid the topic or stay silent, because the persecution will be worth it in the end. LORD, please help me not to care about being comfortable right now because this life will soon be over, but please help me to rather be boldly looking to stand up for your Gospel wherever I go, no matter the persecution, because it will bring you glory and you will bless me for it.

  48. Dan Blankenship says:

    Hebrews 11

I am so encouraged by all of these champions of Faith. God is faithful to those who out of reverence and fear exhibit great faith.

Romans 10:17 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Christians are strengthened in their faith thru the word of God. Knowing this truth makes it very hard to watch our numbers on SOTD dwindle. Faith is the great expression of trusting in God. Every one of these champions of the faith trusted in God to exceed their own expectation and understanding. We have full assurance of the sovereignty and providence of our God. He uses his chosen faithful to bring him glory and honor. I pray that God will use me to bring him the glory and honor that he desires and deserves. The lord was so faithful this week to all of the True North campus lunches. Praise God, to him be the glory and honor forever and ever amen.

  49. Evan Winslow says:

Faith in these chapters is repeatedly connected with doing things. It’s clear that our faith leads to actions, and also that only actions done in faith have value. If we are not doing “faithful” things, it’s not because we’re not trying hard enough — it’s because we don’t have faith. Some part of our hearts doesn’t believe God. The real solution isn’t to just try harder, it’s to grow our faith, which will lead to us trying harder, and succeeding more in actually doing those “faithful” things like obedience. I’m going to filter my life through the lens of faith asking, “What does doing this say about my faith towards God?” I want a full and powerful and God-pleasing faith.

  50. Pastor Ben says:

One of the best chapters in the Bible. It teaches so much about faith. Faith has a focus on eternity. Faith leads to action. It made me think about what am I going to do in this life by faith?

  51. Katie Slusher says:

37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated—

Faith doesn’t mean trusting that God will give you everything you want, but rather trust in God to be in complete control. The faithful men described in this chapter sometimes faced horrible persecutions as a result of their ambitious faith. While the outsider looking in may not be able to see the faithfulness of the martyr, these men perservered in complete faith til the end. These men trusted in God to the point of their own suffering and persecutions. I’m convicted tonight by my lack of faith. I fail to trust God with some of the tiniest problems I face, let alone suffering and afflication. My prayer tonight is that I would be completely trusting in my sovereign Lord.

  52. Bri Beatty :) says:

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen
3By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
    ——————————————————————-
That faith is having belief in something you can’t see but you know it’s true not by seeing it but by trusting in it with your heart.

That we need to have faith to be a follower of Jesus Christ because we first need to repent (turn form our ways to doing God’s ways) and the seconded thing we need faith (in that the word of God is true and that God did send Jesus to die for us) we should always have faith in his plan for our life’s because God has a plan for ALL of us!!

PS: I need prayer in this; I need to ALWAYS remember that God has a plan and a reason for my life.

    Thanks,
    Bri !!<3

  53. Dave Hosford praying for revival before He comes says:

Heb 11 – worth a second day of study, worship and praise to the unseen God!

  54. Ian H. says:

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. . . that is faith as described in the Bible. To be assured, to be confident in something that I cannot actually see. Many people hope that they will go to heaven when they die, but have no true assurance that they will. They gamble with their eternal destination, something that is flat out stupid, when they could have assurance, confidence that if they rely on Jesus Christ and the work that He did, they can be with God forever! But this faith is not blind belief or foolish hope. There is evidence, significant evidence that the Bible is true. This faith is a reasonable faith. However, as many might think, it is not just an intellectual knowledge or even a mental acknowledgement that Jesus was a real person who really died. It is a trust, a dependence on Jesus Christ and His finished work. Just like a rock climber who is about to rappel back down the cliff; you have to be totally convinced that the person who is holding the ropes will not let you go; you have to lean back, standing on the cliff face even though there is a long drop to the ground beneath you. That is the faith described here, and that is the kind of faith God wants.
Lord, please let me have that same trust in you, that same dependence on you that was demonstrated by so many people in the past. . . please give me faith in You!
