Exodus 2

The Birth of Moses

2:1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. 12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?” 14 He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.” 15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock. 18 When they came home to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?” 19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20 He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” 21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah. 22 She gave birth to a son, and he called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”

God Hears Israel’s Groaning

23 During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 God saw the people of Israel—and God knew. 23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.

24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.

25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

The Israelites asked for God’s help, and His answer was sending in Moses to lead them out of egypt. we should be something we should be doing everyday,(praying I mean) because God is not one to ignore us; rather, WE are the ones ignoring him! sure we dont get what we want…it may not be right for us at the moment, it might require us to wait, or yes or no. God is not a genie who gives 3 wishes and is shackled to a lamp-He is the Creator of the universe! An Awsome and Holy God!
If we knock, the door will open; if we look for something, we will find it

  2. Jacob Decker says:

14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.

Pharaoh tried to kill Moses, but failed :). Moses from the start was afraid and he assumed that his actions probably already became known. Well, later on, the Israelites are in trouble and look to God. Then, here comes Moses! God answers our prayers, they are just in another way, shape, or form. Thank God for everything…everyday!

  3. Beth Lauder says:

5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

Moses was delivered from death in order to grow up and lead Israel during the time of their delivery from their slavery in Egypt. God’s plans will not be thwarted. Moses should have been killed because he was a male child, but instead he lived and even grew up as the son of Pharoah’s daughter. This account of Moses’ remarkable delivery from death in infancy foreshadows the deliverance from Egypt that God would put into motion through him. (My study Bible helped me make this connection. Study Bibles are so helpful!)

  4. Dan Lauder says:

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

While Moses’s initial intention to help his fellow brother from getting beat up seeemed good, he obviously took things too far. His desire to retaliate got the best of him and he did something he knew he shouldn’t have. Perhaps he felt justified as he witnessed the continual harsh treatment of his people by the Egyptians. However, his actions ended up hurting his reputation, put his own life in danger and forced him to leave Egypt.

I need to remember that just because I feel like doing something it doesn’t mean I should, no matter how justified I feel. I need to check my feelings with God’s commands so I do the right thing.

  5. Riley Hancock says:

When Moses was in the basket they new it was a Hebrew baby so the got the babys mom witch they had now idea but God did that on purpos. God has a purpose for everyone and it is the mader of doing it.God work thourgh me.

    Learning about Moses today! yeaah!

24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.

God is going to use Moses as a tool to help out the Israelites get out of Egypt and back to their homeland. God spared Moses and make him not die because God had a plan to use Moses for the Israelites, to be a leader and lead them out of Egypt. God is just so amazing how He works, like Moses in the Nile and some how Pharoah’s daughter brought him out and have someone take care of him!

  7. 5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

It is amazing to watch God’s plan unfold in the most impossible situation. A baby being sent down a riverbank could be drowned or any other possible situation but God lead him to the Pharoahs daughter for a reason, he had a plan. He kept him alive in a time of death, at least death ment for him. Moses’ was put in a home to be cared for and kept alive, now God’s plan can unfold.

I can’t wait to see what God’s plan is for all of us!!!!!

  8. Julia Bradley says:

This used to be one of my favorite bible stories in Sunday school. The sacrifice of Moses’s mother, and how God is going to use him to free the Israelites. It’s an amazing story and an example of how God can use us to accomplish His plan. Moses was not a perfect person – he was a sinner, as this chapter reveals, but he is willing to do what God calls him to do. We’ll get to that in more detail down the road…I’m excited!

    love these verses!! ^^^

Gods”rescue” wont always come when we want it to! In Genesis 15:16; 46:3-4 God promised to bring the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt, and the people had to wait for so long for that promise. God let them go in HIS timing, not theirs. We need to remember that God already has our life figured out. Never feel like God doesn’t love you enough to answer your prayer, keep in mind he loves you, and will answer your prayer when the time is right.

  10. Matt Crane says:

24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob

‘God heard’ is probably my favorite phrase in this sentence… God remembered what he had promised to the fathers and he ‘heard’ the Israelites cry! I don’t have to hope that God will hear me because I know he will.. He promises us that so I know that since God is faithful, he will hear my cry too!

  11. Mechell says:

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”
8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.
9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

Is this a miracle or what? God is giving the baby back to his own mother to nurse, and to top that she is going to get paid to take care of her own child! God is so good! This could have been the saddest day for a mother but God has turned her sorrow into joy. I love knowing that I can always trust in God and that He is always in control. The mother of Moses placed her baby in a basket with the hope that something good would come of it. I pray that we would display that same kind of hope as we trust in the same God today!

  12. Mechell says:

I forgot to give a shout- out to Janiel, Julia, Savannah and Cristina!!!

  13. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

Okay I love this story!! I agree with you Mechell…is this a blessing or what!?! Totally the work of a sovereign and good God who works ALL things together for good for those who love Him and who blesses obedience. Why would we not want to trust our God and hold firmly to His promises?? And what is more, why would we not cling tightly to His promises and allow WHO HE IS to motivate us to a life of holiness?!

God was truly in control here and cares so much about them that he sent Moses to lead them. God had planned to use Moses all a long. I agree with Matt God heard means He is always listening to us and keeps his promises.

  16. Jasmine Douglas says:

23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.
24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.
25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

How encouraging are these 3 verses!
The Israelites cried out to God for help and he HEARD them and took notice of their cries. Then he REMEMBERED the covenant he made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Then he LOOKED on the Israelites and was CONCERNED. If we go to the Lord with all of our troubles, he is going to take care of us. We need to go to him with everything in life! Just like in this story, after the people cried out to Him, then he heard them and wanted to reach out to them. He wants to reach out and help us to!

  17. Murphy Danahy says:

14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

Our sin never goes unnoticed by GOD and often not by man either. We should always keep from sinning because if we do it greives GOD and will always come back to haunt us. Always remember that our sins are forgiven, but the reprocussions of said sin still exist and matter.

  18. Jeff Modugno :) says:

3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

This is amazing that she could trust God that he would protect her baby and just send the baby down the Nile. That would be so hard to watch your brother and not know if you were watching him die. This shows me that I need to tust God with everything.

  19. PaYtOn :] says:

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

God had a way to protect Moses and the cooler thing is that Moses’s mother could take care of him and raise him and not have to worry about Moses being killed for he was now the son of the princess. God is amazing on how things work out.

???In the Bible it usually talks about the men, how come they didn’t say much of anything about Moses’s father? The Bible talks about his mother but what happened to his father???

***REMEMBER: God created us with a purpose :]***

  20. Laura Johnson says:

25So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

in verse 23 God heard them crying out for help, and as verse 25 says “was concerned about them” God cares for us so much, more than anyone. He’s done so much for us, beyond what we deserve. These last couple verses of the chapter remind me so much of how we can call out to God for help and He will always help us in some way. We are so lucky to have someone like Him that we can always come to and ask for help and rely on.

25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

I like these verses because even though the Israelites were in hard times and still stuck in slavery, they cried out for help and God heard them. God always hears our prayers and this verse reminds us that he remembers and loves us. It says in vs 25 that he was concerned for them which can comfort us because we know that God always cares for His children

  22. kelly causky says:

    Ya Jasmine :D
I love reading this chapter because it just proves God’s plan for everything. God made a promise to help the Isrealite slaves and to make sure Moses was not killed so he could help the Isrealites. God also knew that thousands of years later we would be reading about this and analyzing it.. God is awesome.

  23. Alex Mishreki says:

24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.

25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

These verses are very encouraging! I love how we’re able to see how God works in these first two books, Genesis and Exodus. He’s always in control of everything, and had this all planned from the beginning- just like our lives! He hears us, remembers us, and looks upon us for our needs. Just as He has been doing for the Israelites in this chapter! We serve an immutable God!

Once again, God always remembers and keeps his promises and its sooo awesome!!
worship night was amazing by the way!!

  25. Cameron says:

12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

Pastor Mike always says that one of the things that makes the Bible unique is that the Bible heroes are not actually heroes. here we see that Moses kills a man and sins, and then tries to lie and cover it up. even though Moses led the Israelites in the Exodus, he still sins. this fact that the Bible characters are shown in their sin helps us understand the veracty of Scripture

  26. M@x says:

24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.

God never goes back on His word. If He makes a promise, He’s going to keep that promise no matter what. God remembered that He had promised Abraham, and now was the time for Him to keep His promise. This is such a great verse! He heard their groaning. He hears our cries for help. And He listens to us, and He’s there to help us and protect us. God is so amazing! He never breaks His word, and He loves us to death! (literally! He died for us!) Let’s praise Him for all He does!

  27. Jacob Foreman says:

24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.

25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them

I think the Bible has shown time and time again that what God says, actually happens and he always follows through on a promise. He has promised to build Abraham into a great nation and God showed compassion with Abraham’s descendents who were stuck as slaves under the Eqyptians. Praise to the Lord for his awesome holiness, love, mercy, and listening to our prayers! God is amazing!

  28. tyler M says:

Moses was left in the reeds by his mother because she knew she couldn’t keep him but when Pharoh’s duaghter found him, she knew he was a Hebrew. God brought Moses back to his mother after she left him so that she could keep Nd nurse him. And later in Moses’s life, after fleeing Egypt, God helped him bye rewarding Moses’s help to the women. It’s awesome how God could do these things in our lives!
Also, as Matt said, it’s awesome that God ‘heard’ the Hebrews and remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and was concerned for them. God is so loving and awesome!!! Praise and Glorify him!!!!

  29. It's Daniel Yo! says:

6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.
7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”
8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.

Ok there are two parts i especially like about this section. 1: God was completely watching out for Moses then. At that time, the babies where being killed. Moses being spared was a miracle 2: It was crazy how the woman they asked to nurse Moses was his own mother!

  30. Natasha B :) says:

Worship night was soooo much fun!!

I love this bible story how baby Moses was spared from being killed because he was a male. And how awesome God is to have the perfect plan for Moses to help his people to be free. It’s just so interesting to see how these story’s unfold and Gods hand is at work in every situation. Even though there was pain and suffering for the Hebrew people God heard their cry’s even after sooo many years to deleiver them. Even in our own lives now God hears our prayers and we too need to be patient and wait upon the lord to answer our prayers even though it may take years. Just reminds me to never give up on God because he’s is sooo good and loves us sooo much. He’s just awesome like that.

  31. christopher eriksen says:

6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.

I have to agree with Daniel. Its amazing how God saved Moses life by having Pharaoh’s daughter adopt him and then having his own mother raise him. God has everything under control and will take care of us just like he took care of Moses to ensure deliverance for Israel. Another thing thats cool is the boldness Moses’ sister Miriam had. She got out from her hiding place and approached Pharaoh’s daughter so that Moses mother could raise him. This isn’t exactly evangelism, but it is still bold considering that it was Pharaoh’s daughter she was speaking to. We can’t be afraid of talking to people of God, because no matter what happens to us, the Gospel has the power to save people’s lives.

  32. Pastor Bobby says:

It was great to see so many of you at True North and Worship Night!

I can definitely relate to this Levite woman! I would not want to my newborn child to die! Imagine her joy when she find out that her child she thought might di is alive and she is able to raise him for Pharoah’s daugther. This is another example of the Lord taking something bad, but using it for good!

This is a good example of something worth praising God for!

  33. John Karlsson says:

So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

While we were still yet sinners Christ died for us. God loves us just as he loved his people the Israelites. Its amazing to think that the God of the Universe desires to have a relationship with us. All we have to do is repent and put our faith in Christ Jesus. Its a free gift that no one can earn. Its time for us to show love to our non Christian friends by taking the time to share the Gospel with them.

  34. Katie Slusher says:

Again in Exodus we see God sovereignly working despite human sinfulness. Pharaoh thought by killing all the male Hebrew babies he could stop the Israelites from getting too powerful. However, as Job 42:2 reminds us, no plan of the Lord can be thwarted. Moses’ life was spared as a child because God was in control of the situation and ultimately had a plan for Moses to lead the people out of Egypt. How encouraging to know that whatever God ordains is right and that nothing he purposes can be thwarted!

  35. I really liked Cristina’s comment about verses 23-25, those thoughts about God’s timing came to mind for me too. He keeps all of His promises! Also how personal God is, that He heard their cries in slavery and that He was “concerned” about them. That picture of the all powerful God hearing their prayers and looking on them with concern is really motivating to me to be crying out to Him myself with my burdens instead of loosing hope or giving in to the temptation to worry about them instead.

  36. Alison says:

8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.
9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

Sometimes I think God must have a really good sense of humor… this mother thought she was losing her baby but ended up getting to take care of him as he grew up. That’s pretty awesome!

  37. Brandy Crane says:

3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.

she was smart. she had to put her son in the nile because Pharaoh said so, but she was smart and made a basket to put him in so he wouldn’t drown and also put Moses in the reeds so he wouldn’t move down stream.

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

Moses’es sister is very smart and wasted no time in making her move to get her mother to nurse her own son and get PAID for it as well! very smart
