The Burning Bush
3:1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
7 Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. 16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt, 17 and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 And they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand. 20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all the wonders that I will do in it; after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and when you go, you shall not go empty, 22 but each woman shall ask of her neighbor, and any woman who lives in her house, for silver and gold jewelry, and for clothing. You shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians.” (ESV)

Ex 3:21 “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed.
Hmmmm… God’s plan and timing are perfect – but most times NOT the sme thing that we want or even think. God did transfer wealth from the Egyptians, but it took a long time and many plagues and hardships to get to that point. We’ve got to realize that, no matter what, God’s promises NEVER fail and are always best. And we can rest in that: Ps 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
I AM is the name that God chose to call Himslef that showed His character as dependable and faithful. This became a very sacred named for the Israelites when referring to God. So sacred, in fact, that they were not even able to say the name aloud. This reminded me of John 8:58 where Jesus says, “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” The Jews who heard Jesus refer to Himself this way wanted to stone Him because it was a blasphemous statement. Jesus’ claim to be I AM directly echoed God’s declaration of who God is. I am in awe this morning how the entire Bible ties together. It is God-breathed and the Old Testament points to Christ, who the New Testamnet is all about…remarkable!
Moses is called to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt to go to a better place. God called us to make new Christains so we can go to a better place Heaven.God work through us all.
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
The Lord is so holy Moses cannot get very close and even the ground is holy because He is near it. Its amazing to think when we pray, we are speaking to that very same God, the one who created the earth, performed miracles, died on the cross and will defeat the devil once and for all. How blessed are we?
2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
How weird would this be, you see a bush on fire within the bush and it also does not burn. Here being in the presence of God, it’s amazing how we can’t even get close or see God while living here on the earth or else we will die.
10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
God has a plan to use Moses to bring His people, the Israelites out of Egypt. This will show how Moses’ faith in God is, it will be like a test of faith, to see if Moses will trust what God and Moses will just do it.
19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him.
20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.
Wow I have been so glad I have been studying prophecy! Here it is again!!! God knows that Pharoah, the king of Egypt will not the Israelites unless God does not plague him or do something else that will affect him. So God tells him that he is going to do miracles until he let’s the Israelites go!
2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
Wow! That is pretty amazing. The bush didn’t burn up, but it was on fire. From a human perspective that is impossible, but with God anything is possible. I am amazed at what is God is able to do. God truly can do immeasurably more then all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20)
That is so true Spencer, our God is amazing!
12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
I love this verse for two reasons; one is because it shows us that our confidence comes from God, and the other is that worship should be our response to God’s faithfulness. The Lord deserves all the praise and glory for all that has happened in our Church and in our lives! He is faithfull!
4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
I love this part. God is speaking to Moses to tell him to free His people. God heard the cry of his people, so God is sending Moses to “Let God’s people Go!” “I am who I am.” I think that is really powerful. Where Moses stands, on Holy ground, talking to God, that is awesome.
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
This verse reminded me of the verses Cameron read last night at Worship Night about how the even angels had to cover their feet out of humility in God’s presence. God’s glory is emphasized everywhere, including this passage. I am in awe that God chose people like us to save and encounter his glory and holiness one day. Maranatha!
When Moses was in God’s presence, He had to take off his shoes and hide His face because of how holy God is. When we pray, we may not have God’s physical presence right in front of us, but we need to show the same reverence Moses does. That doesn’t necessarily mean taking our shoes, but it does mean that we shouldn’t let our minds wander among other thoughts, pray selfishly, or just rush through praying so we can get it over with. We need to remember we are in God’s presence even though we don’t see Him and should give the respect He deserves.
This shows just how holy God really is – Moses had to take off his sandals to walk in the presence of the Lord, and he was even afraid to look at him! Imagine being in the company of someone so holy that you were afraid to look at them. I don’t think we can really comprehend just how holy He is.
7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
GOD reallly does hear and know everything. He hears you when you cry out to him, and he does answer. It may seem like it’s slow in coming, but GOD answers all prayers in his own time.
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
I remember last night Cameron read a chapter in Isaiah where there it say that the angels had to cover their faces in the presence of God. And those are angels, perfect beings created by God. Moses is just a man. And not just any man, he’s a murderer. He’s so holy, we can’t even look at a bush that is lit on fire by His glory. It’s amazing. And one day, we’re going to stand before Him and worship Him! I can’t wait till that day!
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
i love this verse because it tells us a lot about God. God’s true name Yahweh, is a reference to His being and to His person. in out Bibles, it is rendered LORD, because like Mrs. Lauder said, it is sacred to the Jews. the other word rendered Lord is “adonai” which is the Hebrew word that references God’s sovereignty.
Pastor Mike talked about how people used the vowel sounds/marks from “adonai” and the consonants from Yahweh (because Hebrew has no vowels) and we get a conflation of YWHW and adonai to get Jehovah! I just thought that was really cool.
But God’s true name Yahweh is really cool because answers that question that skeptics always ask: “Who created God?” and because of this verse we can say that God is self-existent, no one created Him, He is always there, He always was there, and He always will be there, because Yahweh is derived from the Hebrew word meaning “to be”. So when God says I AM has sent you, he is declaring that He is the one and only true God.
God is holy! How often we consider what that statement really means? Where is our reverence before a holy God? Our minds are filled with many things but not necessarily what is profitable for holy living. Pastor Bobby’s message this morning posed some very important questions regarding the holiness of God and our attitude toward Him. I am looking forward to digging into the examples of God’s holiness in the scripture’s this week.
Moses hid his face in the presence of God, he was afraid to even look at Him. When I look at God through His word, when I consider just how perfect, holy and righteous He is; I too want to hide my face. I am unworthy, a sinner living my life before a holy God and yet, in His great mercy He has called me His own. I pray this week we would mindful of God’s holiness; giving Him both praise and honor for who He is and for what He has done in our lives!
I agree with Mechell, of how God is so holy! Moses couldn’t even look at God, this weekend Pasture Bobby’s message made me think of how Holy God is as this passege show’s. Also if you were there for worship night Pasture Bobby asked us to right a letter to God about all he has done for us and to praise him and thank him! I could not thank him or praise him enough for he has given us all so much, we compared to him are so unrightious and on such a lower level. God IS holy, and rightious!! We can only do so much for him since we are sinners, and HE has given us the chance to be in his Kingdom with him for eternity! We need to remember this and praise God every day for what HE has given US!!!!!
“There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.”
I think the burning bush is something of a symbol of God: he lives (just like the fire burns) without ever dying down. He is always burning powerfully.
” ‘Do not come any closer,’ God said. ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.’ ”
Also, here we have a picture of God’s holiness. He is so holy and glorious that Moses even has to take of his shoes just to come near him.
“God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am.’ ”
This is definitely one of my favorite verses in the Old Testament if. What is God like? Who is He? Here we get the answer:
He is who he is. He himself has existence and exists in and of himself: we came into existence at one point, but God just IS, always has been, and always will be.
This is just insane to me. I can’t get my head around the idea. And I think it’s only one of the ways that God is just so awesome and incomprehendable.
MOSES! This reminds me exactly of Prince of Egypt, which I got to say did a fantastic job retelling one of the greatest Bible stories of all time!
” ‘Do not come any closer,’ God said. ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.’ ”
Just imagining this scene gets me all pumped up! God is so perfect, none of us deserve to be in His presence someday. And when Moses bows down in fear before God is incredible! He doesn’t even see all of God and yet, he is fearful of Him! Like Bobby was saying last night, God would come down in a cloud before Moses later on because he would die if he saw God in person! It’s so amazing to think about! I’m in awe of the Lord and I will continue to worship Him in everything I do! I love you Lord!!!
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
This verse stuck out to me! The fact that Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. God is so powerful and holy and we should have that mindset of fearing him for who he really is and all that he can do. As Bobby mentioned last night, “When was the last time we thought about God for who he really is?” I do not think we can comprehend just how mighty and HOLY our God is! In the presence of the Lord, hiding yourself because your afraid and because of how amazing and holy God is. God is so good!
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
God is so Holy Moses cannot even stand on the same ground as Him. Yet he is with us forever and always. How amazing is that? We are so not worthy of his grace. Do we show Him this kind of reverence in prayer and worship, not at all! But we should, he is so amazing yet most of the time we just over look it and heavily downplay his glory. We need to put things in perspective everyday, and not give ourselves any credit for our salvation and focus on giving him all the reverence and glory he deserves.
7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
I like verse 7 alot. I remember in exodus 3 when the word concerned just popped out to me because God knows everything and remembers us through our hard times.
When God said , “I will be with you.” He is always with us no matter what. He doesn’t ditch us or forget about us but he deeply cares and loves us even though we keep insulting him with our sins. I am constantly amazed at this fact when I first really got to see how awesome God is, it’s just a speechless realization. In the second part of this verse He just commands the Israelites to worship Him. That’s all God asks of us- He’s concerned for us, rescues us from our bondage, and gives us salvation and unfailing love. All that He wants in return is that we worship him with all our heart. That’s a pretty great deal and we should take advantage of worshiping God as much as we can especially since we’re so blessed to live in a free country and not persecuted for our faith
19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him.
20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.
It is so cool as Kyle already said to see how God already knew that the King of Egypt would not let him go so God said he would perform miracles. It just is so cool to see God already had Moses future planned out and that means that God already has our future planned out to.
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
This just gives us a great picture of how holy God truly is. He is so Holy that Moses could not even bear to look at Him. We are so insignificant compared to God yet this He chose to send His son down to sve us. This just the coolest picture of God ever.
God called Moses and he answered immediately! He was available to do what God had asked and he was obedient. How encouraging! When God calls us we need to respond and be willing to give up anything for Him. We need to trust that He has a plan and will help us through it. He wants to use all of us! It’s up to us to let him.
I love this chapter…
It is so encouraging to know that God does not forget His promises (v. 16-17) and that He will be with us and we never have to do anything alone (v.12).
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha i remember this from vegetales!!!!
Whatt an awesome chapter, the beginning og the event of the exodus of egypt!!! I am excited personally to read what God will do with these people, but sadly as Bobby said they will sin, but i still look forward to the rest!
2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”
4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
Wow I love Exodus becauce it shows the hardships that they go through and how God always has a plan for them.
Amazing how God showed up in a bush that was on fire to Moses and the Holy Spirit was there to. God cares so much about them He really wants the best for them and He is going to protect them as much as He can. We can not even see God or else we will die for He is holy and we are not but we shall strive to be holy and like God.
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
Awesome comment Bobcat, I definitely agree with you on this verse!! It made me think of my prayer times, and how sometimes i forget who i’m talking to!! We are talking to a HOLY God, the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings!!! When we pray, don’t forget to show him the respect he deserves!!! Let us focus on giving our holy God the all the glory!
2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
The fact that our Lord can appear in a bush with flames but not burn the bush is crazy! God is so powerful! This shows that He is capable of doing anything! He is allpowerful and almighty. I am so conforted by this passage. It makes me so happy that I am serving such an awsome God. He deserves all the honor and praise we can give Him.
I love how THIS is the chapter where God first promises the Promise Land to the Jewish people…this is a promise that’s SO important to so much of the Old Testament and is referenced back to so many times… I also love how God promises right THEN that He will make the Egyptians favorably disposed to the Israelites, so no one could say “the Egyptians giving us all that stuff is great luck!” when it actually happens at the time they leave Egypt.
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
This is such a great chapter and there’s so much to share! God is so Holy that when Moses asks him his question, God replies by letting him know not to worry and that he will be with him. Also, when Moses goes over to the bush, God says Moses must remove his sandles for he is on Holy ground and Moses was so afraid of God that he hid his facce. We should be praising God for this and for what he has done for us and, as Bobby preached today, we should get excited about what he is doing and really wanting to know God.
Also, in verse 8 it says “So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.” God was listening to his people and worried/concerned for us and that is just so awesome that he would worry about us. God is so great and we should be praising and praying to him everyday!
11But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egyp, you will worship God on this mountain.”
I like how in verse 11 Moses questions how he is suppose to ask Pharaoh to let the Israelites out of Egypt but then in verse 12 God answers back, “I will be with you”
These two verses remind me that non Christians could really wonder how to accomplish things in their lives because they are trying to do things on their own with no help but Christians can accomplish pretty much anything in our lives, because we have God, and God can do anything. Like Matthew 19:26 says “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Even in this chapter in verse 2 God created a on fire bush that didn’t even burn. no one else could ever do that. We are so blessed to have God guiding us in everything we do and that He is always with is.
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
This verse really got me thinking about worship night last night and about the holiness of God. It just makes me so excited to one day spend eternity in heaven with God and worship Him forever. He is so good to us and holiness is hard to describe, but it must be incredible!!! Every knee will one day bow to God and worship His almighty name and holiness.
These verse really show how amazing our God is. His glory and holiness is so great that we would die if we even saw it or were in the presence of it. Like the verse that Bobby talked about today where Moses asked God to show him his glory but God had to first hide Moses in between some rocks and then let his glory pass by Moses.
WOW!! The place where Moses was standing was so HOLY, the LORD had Moses take off his sandals. Imagine being in the presence of God!! It just amazes what could have been going through Moses’ mind when he was in the presence of the God Most High. When God displayes His Holiness to us, it is definately noticed. God presented himself to Moses by means of a burning bush, that didn’t burn up, but it was on fire. What a sight to see!! God is SO HOLY!!!!
7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
It is neat to see how God is always looking out for his people. It really comforts me to know that God cares about me and will protect me. the fact that he is never too busy for us always amazes me. seeing how the Israelites’ cry for help was answered is a great encourager for me to pray more.
I love how Hunter pointed out that our response to anything God does for us should be worshiping!!
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
This stuck out to me because i just cant wait to be in the presence of God and be able to see his face, but i wonder if i am goign to want to hide my face. So many interesting things happen in the bible!!
We must realize that no matter what we do God is with us. Even when we find it difficult to spread the gospel to friends and our family, God is with us and guiding us all the way. We should have confidence in the Lord, not ourselves.
I love how this chapter really shows the grace and faithfullness of God when He tells Moses, “I will be with you”. AND He is – every step of the way. Its really encouraging! I mean, He could have just commanded Moses to go and let him figure it out. But, God even tells him exactly what to say – “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
every time i read this chapter, i am in awe of the fact that Moses talked with our Lord! He was in the presence of God! How amazing would that be? To see just a glimpse of the glory of our God?! (:
This chapter also shows the mercy of our Lord. I loved what EM said. That the Lord promises Moses that he will be there every step of the way. He didn’t just let Moses figure it out on the way, he even told him what to say. Our Lord is so amazing!!
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
This is How the world should be when they hear the name of God. but nowadays they’re like “ehh~” or some unenthusiastic response. God is Holy; our sin is like a really noticeable black stain at his incredibly white and shining robe (Glory), which was washed away by Jesus who died for us at the cross, kinda like super strong detergent.
*cheers* Go! Capo Girls! yeah!
Revive Orange County step by step, slowly but kind of, we’re getting there.
These two verse show the true magnificence of our God. First of all it says that God told Moses not to come any closer and to take off his sandals. This is so crazy that he could not even come that close to God because of how Holy He is.
And in verse 6 it just shows us what it would be like to be in the presence of God. Moses couldnt even look at God because he was scared too. Have you ever thought of what it will be like to be in Gods Holy presence. When i think of what it would be like I just think of one thing. I think of the song Facedown. When we see God we will fall to our faces becase of his Holiness and Glory that are shinging around!!!!!
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
This verse really stood out to me because of Moses’s response to God telling him who He is. Moses hides his face! This weekend Bobby directed our thoughts toward God’s holiness, thinking about that and reading this chapter makes me think that hiding my face would be a fitting response to encountering our perfect and powerful God! I need to have a serious attitude in approaching God in prayer, worship and His Word, not making excuses or acting flippant in any way. Also following this attitude would being careful to be quick to obey what He tells me to do.
What a great weekend at True North!
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
As many of you have commented this is a great chapter for us to start our week of thinking about how God is holy. We definitely need to come to him with fear and great respect!
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
The very presence of the Lord was enough to terrify Moses to hide his face
How powerful our God is! He controls everything in our lives, from the stirring of a leaf in the wind to an avalanche, can we even grasp how omnipotent he is? Do we possess the reverence we ought to have for someone, the only one, that powerful?
I don’t know if we can because I don’t think we can ever fully know the Lord’s holiness and omnipotence, or the full extent of his other characteristics for that matter
6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.
This passage reveals a lot about the character and nature of God. Likes many have discussed earlier, it reveals God’s holiness. Additionally, it reveals God’s faithfulness. The God of Patriarchs made a covenant with Abraham to make a great nation from his descendents. Although the Hebrews were temporarily in another country, God intended to keep his promise to Abraham and begins to lead the people out of Egypt. The compassion of God is also revealed in verse 7, He hears the cries of his people who are being oppressed by the Egyptians. In the coming chapters in Exodus, we will learn more about God’s protection and guidance in bringing the people out of Egypt. I pray that the study of Exodus will deepen our heart of worship before the Lord as his character continues to be revealed!
AH I noticed that too Beth Lauder! I think it is incredible how God connects everything the way that He does!
23 When the LORD goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.
And I found this verse quite interesting to me. The blood reminds me of the two crosses on each side of the door that Jesus was killed next too and the door reminds me of how Jesus is the gateway into Heaven. The people inside the door were protected because they were God’s chosen ones. the angel of death passed by just as how the Devil can never get into Heaven! How cool is that? We’ll always be protected by our Heavenly Creator and I’m in awe of Him! :O
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
back in the day when people say they were sent by someone whoever they are speaking to immeadiately will take them in on the word of who they were sent. so when Moses was to say I AM sent him they needed to treat him greatly and believe God has sent him
