John 16

16:1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV)

Well hello, it’s been three long days since I haven’t been on here. It seems like forever. I just got home from being at Palm Springs for a basketball tourney. It was quite an amazing experience both mentally and spiritually. It’s important that we make a resolution to read the Bible everyday this coming year, because I’ve been slacking this past month in my readings and that was a result of some stuff I’ve gotten into which was not good haha. Anyways, I had this amazing experience when I read all of Philippians today.

7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit in this chapter. The Holy Spirit covicts the world of it’s guilt. I’m thankful for the Holy Spirit. Conviction is not fun, but it let’s me know that I’ve got problems and it helps me to be more holy because I don’t want to feel conviction or feel the guilt after I sin. Being convicted is one of the worst feelings.

  2. Dave Hosford, praying for Revival says:

John 16:1″All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.”

John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus and the Father have laid out these words so that we will live (2 Tim 3:16-17) and serve the one True God. and know this – He has already won the war (Rev 22) – so get on the right side and recruit everyone by living and speaking the true gospel.

Lord, please come soon and, in the meantime, have the Holy Spirit guide us to share You with everyone You place us in front of today and every day.

16″In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
Doesn’t it feel like this for you, too? Looking forward to seeing Jesus–to meeting up with Him after what NOW feels like a long trek of hard labor, but in the grand scheme of eternity is a BLINK. I long for the day I will see Jesus face to face, and I collapse in His arms, and He wraps me up like a baby swaddled in its mother’s arms-held closely in warmth, guarding, and love…and I break down into this joyful sobbing that no words can do any justice to…and, His hand on my neck, encourages me to just let it all out, and He just takes all of me, and He loves me. At some point when I am ready to collect my spilled self, I step back, and He doesn’t have to say a single word. Because everything He might have to say speaks for itself in the wounds His body remains marked with, even in His resurrected body.

What a SAVIOR we have. What a gracious, ruthless, wonderful Savior He is. He’s victorious, tenacious, consistent, and loving, all wrapped up into One. There is none like Him. And He died for YOU, and He died for Me, if we would receive and yield to such love.

  4. kelly causky says:

22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

I love how it says, “no one will take away your joy.” This shows us that the way we act should not be based on our emotions because we have a reason to always be joyful: Jesus rose from the dead and we will too. If something sad happens to us, we should not turn from God and mope around looking for pity, but instead we should seek comfort in the Lord. Let’s thank him for all the amazing things he has done that made us joyfully in 2009.

  5. Beth Lauder says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Verse 33 stood out to me because Jesus clearly states that “trouble” (trials, persecution, hardship) WILL be a part of my life on earth. As a Christian it is not a question of IF I will have trials in my life but WHEN. John 16:33 brought to mind 1 Peter 4:12-13, which says, “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.” Jesus has overcome the world so we know that we will triumph over all difficult circumstances by trusting in Him to get us through. It is of great comfort to me to worship and trust in a Savior who has felt the pain of being persecuted and living a life of hardship because He lived a holy life according to God’s will. This morning I am encouraged to remember that the trials I am enduring now are not something unusual for a Christian, they are a guaranteed part of living a life set-apart for God.

  6. hunter 2010 says:

27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

It is so encouraging to know that God the Father loves me! I never have to doubt God’s love for me because I have loved His Son Jesus and believe that He is God! John 14:15 says clearly that obedience to what Jesus says proves our love for Him, so If I obey what He says I can be 100% sure of the Father’s love for me. Also, Rom. 8:35 is a great reminder that nothing can make us unlovable in God’s eyes; if we believe Jesus is God and prove that belief and love with obedience then there is no doubt that we will be wrapped up in God’s unconditional love for eternity!

22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.—These verses remind me of how today is our last day of 2009 and we will be entering a new year which means getting closer to the day when Jesus returns! I CANNOT WAIT! Like it says, as Christians we should hate the earth and be striving towards everything in heaven. I will not need to ask God anymore questions I will know everything there is to know! I won’t be grieving over the close people in my life who have rejected the LORD. I will be praising Him 24/7 and I will be doing nothing else and will not be worrying about anything else! I am excited for 2010 and will be praying that I will grow in my relationship with the LORD and I can bring glory to his name! I will also be praying for a quick return!!!
    MARANATHA!!!

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE!! WILL BE PARTYING IT UP AT CBC TONIGHT!! WOOO :D praying for 2010 at CBC!

  8. Zach Perry *09* says:

25″Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.

THis verse kinda confuses me. I think it means that now Jesus is speaking figuratively to give warnings of what will come in the future. When He says a time will come where we wont speak in figurative language, i think He is referring to the day of judgment when he wont be judging easily and there wont be anymore warnings.
I don’t know if thats the point Jesus is trying to make or not though.

  9. Dan Lauder says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is such a comforting verse. No matter how bad things get in life or this world due to sin, I can always bank on the fact that Jesus has overcome it all. I want to be aligned with the One who has overcome everything. In Him alone will I find peace. Thus my time and energy is best spent investing in my relationship with Him and pursuing the kinds of things that he desires.

  10. Connor Tobia says:

This is my first scripture of the day and I am amazed at this reading. It is so powerful! I especially liked verse 15 “All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.” This verse just lets me know that Jesus is God and God is the Holy Spirit and they are always there around you. There is the Holy Trinity and they are perfect! Also verse 33 gives me that sense of security in knowing that my Lord Jesus is God Almighty and He has overpowered our world, full of evil and temptation. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Thank you for being my strength when I am weak, Lord.

  11. Cameron says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus tells His disciples plainly that they will face trouble and tribulation in this verse. but this trouble isnt just limited to Jesus’ disciples He had while He was on earth. this applies to all disciples and followers of Jesus. we learned in John 15 that the world hates us because of Christ. but Jesus tells us to take heart, which means to be bold and also be at rest in our hearts. the reason He gives us to take heart is because He has overcome the world. this means that Christ has conquered the world and the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4). nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, whether it be death, persecution, or even Satan and his demons! (Romans 8:35-39). this reminds me of Matthew 10:28, where Jesus tells us to fear God and not man, for man can only destroy the body physically, but God can destroy both the physical body and the soul in hell. i pray that knowing that Christ has conquered the world would give me boldness to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ on my high school campus. i pray that He would give me assurance and comfort to know that i am forever His. i need to be living a life that is uncompromising, facing this life with joy, because i know one day i will see My Lord and Savior! Come back Jesus!!!

  12. Ben Schumacher says:

33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I totally agree with you, Dan. No matter what we face in the world, Jesus Christ has conquered it already, and we can always run to him. He is our Rock and Salvation.

Lets Make 2010 the best year ever! Evangelize and spread the gospel!

  13. Victoria says:

16″In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

“a little while” when the Lord used that phrase it seems like he would be coming back in really just a little while…but time to us and time to Him are completely different. A thousand years to us seems so long, but to the Lord it is just a blink of an eye or a second of His time. So to the Lord, His return IS in just a little while…to us on this earth, it seems like forever! But He is coming back soon:) Maranatha! HAPPY NEW YEAR! praying that 2010 will be the best year ever and a time for revival!!

  14. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 22,”So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”

I like this verse because it tells that now is when we are grieving and the best is yet to come. JESUS is basically saying that this life is ganna be hard and when we get to HEAVEN it will be the best day ever. This makes me want to share with others so that instead of doing everything they can in this life they could go to HEAVEN instead of HELL.

  15. Elise says:

13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
14He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

How amazing is the gift that Jesus gives us- the Holy Spirit! Its awesome to think that we have God living in us- constantly working for us! He guides us to truth, something that our fallen bodies and minds could never do. Not only that, but He also gives glory to Jesus! I want to take time everyday to be thankful for my salvation and the precious gift of the Holy Spirit!

  16. John Karlsson says:

22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy

This verse is Jesus talking with his disciples who are disappointed because Jesus was not setting up the kingdom of God like they thought he was. The disciples are disappointed and grieved because of this and the fact that Jesus was leaving them. (death on a cross). But its also a verse of hope because Jesus is promising to see the disciples again and it will be a time of rejoicing. (the resurrection). As Christians we can look at those verse and realize that there will be times of grief in this world, but we need to look ahead to the time when Jesus will return because our joy will be made complete and everlasting. Maranatha!!

See u at the News Year Party!!

  17. Mike says:

1 “All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.

This warning that Jesus gave to His disciples is just as applicable to us as Christians today. We do not have the benefit of Jesus walking with us and teaching us, but we have HIs Word that has been written down for us. If we choose not to study it and meditate on it, we will not be prepared for life. When trials come, or we face persecution, we will fall away. And even in the “good” times, if we are not completely dependent on Christ, then our desire to follow Him will wane until we are no longer following the faith at all. That is why reading the Bible on a daily basis is so vital for our lives. Only if we are constantly immersing ourselves in the commands and teachings found in Scripture will be be ready to apply them to our lives and to grow spiritually. This makes me want more than ever to be in the Word daily in 2010 and every year thereafter, taking time every day to study and meditate on Scripture, so that I will stand firm and not fall away.

  18. katie baxter says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

We are guaranteed trouble and persecution as Christians living for Jesus Christ. Like we learned at Revival, anyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. I think this is something that all Christians should have in their lives, and i know for me especially, if I’m not being persecuted then i need to be sharing the gospel even more. The last part of this verse is so encouraging. When Jesus came to earth, he was rejected, and people hated him for the message he was saying. But he overcame the world, and as followers of him, we will too.

  19. angela voris says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

No one ever said that being a Christian was gonna be easy. We may complain that its hard bot, Jesus has gone through it all already. So no matter what we are going through he has conquered it already. This is just encouraging to see that we can do all through Christ. It also so comforting to know that we can find all comfort in Christ, that he is our salvation.

  20. Melissa Cox says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I love this verse. Sometimes when I get discouraged I remember this verse. I am thankful to be serving Jesus who has already overcome this world. This verse helps me to get perspective…I can have peace because of Him and my secure salvation through Him.

  21. Jasmine Douglas says:

    Happy New Years Eve, friends!!

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Verse 33 is so encouraging. Jesus tells us that we WILL have troubles. It’s inevitable. So when those trials come, we need to remember that God has overcome the world and is in total control of every situation that comes our way. I am sooo thankful for our heavenly Father that is bigger than the air i breathe <3
He doesn’t promise us understanding, but he promises a peace that surpasses that understanding

  22. Shelby says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is so so so encouraging!! I love this verse. Living a Christian life will not be easy all the time, we will have trouble but this verse gives us hope! How amazing is the Lord! He is bigger than anything imaginable. WOW! My life is in the hands of my all powerful God!

  23. Allen McAnlis says:

20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.

This is one of my favorite promises God has made for us. Jesus said earlier that those who follow Him will be rejected by the world maybe even killed. Our time on earth is promised to be filled with suffering and trials from all who hate the LORD. In theend though the LORD will triumph and all His people will rejoice at the destruction of sin and the creation of a perfect world. I cannot wait for the days where every living thing will praise Hisname

  24. Spencer Camp says:

1 “All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.

Sounds like “don’t stop standing” to me.

I am excited for the New Year coming up! This next year I can have assurance that although I will have trials and bad things, I can take heart because Jesus has overcome the world! I have the Holy Spirit with me to convict me of sins and keep me on the narrow road. Alone I will fall, but with God my feet will be firmly planted. I will trust in the Lord!

  25. [DB] Derek Brower 2010 says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I think one of the coolest parts of this chapter come from the last 8 words of this verse. We have the assurance that our Lord has defeated death and has risen above the earth! He has everything under His control and all things happen through His will! Our God is an Awesome God!!!

  26. jacksondahl says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

As a Christian, I know I will be persecuted for my faith. There are going to be lots of hard situations to overcome, trials, tribulations, etc, but I can trust that the LORD will get me through them all. He has overcome all the wickedness in the world, and I don’t need to worry. As it says In James 1:2-3, I should be joyful when I suffer for the LORD’s sake! The more I suffer and face trials in His name the stronger my faith in God will develop. I can know that even though it is hard right now, it will be that much better when I get rejoice and worship the one I love in paradise one day. And I really hope that day is soon! MARANATHA!!

  27. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

16″In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

This verse make me so excited to know that I am going to see my savior soon. It also makes me want to tell more and more people about Christ and what he did so that they can see him in heaven some day.MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Murphy Danahy says:

31″You believe at last!” Jesus answered.
32″But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This verse is great. The disciples finally believed in JESUS because he explained things fully and their faith was complete. We have everything that JESUS said, so if we study it we can have a faith like theirs. I need to read my bible more often.

  29. glenn says:

let me say SOTD posters how much I have enjoyed reading your enthusiastic comments and faithfulness to your daily reading. You are the light of the world at your schools and elswhere.

I pray that if the Lord tarries in 2010 that it will be a year of spiritual growth for each of you as you continue to deepen your understanding of God’s word. I pray that you all will bear much eternal fruit.

Be blessed tonight and onward each day.

    I

  30. Joy Talcott says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is an awesome verse! This verse should give us, as Christians, a confidence with which the wold could not explain as we enter into 2010! No matter what this new year holds, God has overcome the world!! I’m heading off to CBC to bring in the New Year!!

  31. Bill Morris says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is a good passage because it gives hope for what is to come in heaven. We need to be going around trying to bring in more and more people.

  32. steffen eriksen...arghh internet is so annoying says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus here explains why he has been saying the things that he has been saying. He tells the people that he speaks these words so that they can have peace. After this, he tells the people that they will have trouble. It seems somewhat ironic that Jesus would predict peace and then say that trouble will be approaching. But things become more clear as Jesus declares that he has overcome the world. Although there will be troubles in this world; although sin is prevalent in a dark and forsaken are, Jesus has overcome the world. He conquered death, bearing all the sins of the world and putting them to death on the cross. I need to look forward to trials and hard times in my life. Although they may not look like fun, I am trusting God that He has the power to work out His will in my life. And ultimately, I can always live with the assurance that I will live in peace for all of eternity in my true home, in heaven with Jesus my Savior!

  33. Ryan Cox says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I had this verse stencilled on my letterman’s jacket in high school when I thought I was a Christian. I always focused on the “I have overcome the world” part as being so positive & upbeat–which it is…BUT, like the Gospel itself, there’s bad news before the good news: as Christians, we are PROMISED trouble! It is through our struggles that we grow, &, more importantly, it is through these troubles that OTHERS watch us live out our faith in the crucible of such trials.

  34. Wesley Wong says:

John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

James 1:2 says we should consider trials pure joy, because of the results that trials produce. However, through those trials we are going through, we need comfort and encouragement to motivate us. There is no better way of doing that than looking at Jesus’ life. If I think I am having a hard time, Jesus suffered beyond what I can bear. :)

  35. payton =] says:

Wow. Another awesome chapter! Jesus is giving us a so much wisdom in this chapter! Praise the Lord! :)

  36. Pastor Ben says:

13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

The Spirit inspired these apostles to write the New Testament, and now we have this truth preserved for us! How precious is the treasure we have in our Bibles!

I’m so excited to read through the Bible in 2010! Who’s with me!?

  37. Katie Slusher says:

    Last day of 2009!

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus has overcome! We can have true peace knowing that Jesus Christ has conquered death and paid the penalty for my sin. Whatever happens in this world, whatever the circumstances, I can rest knowing that my debt has been paid fully by Jesus Christ.

  38. Christa Blakey says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is an awesome verse because it brings that clear realty that we WILL have troubles in life. Sometimes I find myself acting surprised by how difficult something is or wondering why things have to be hard. But I need to remember this and that will really help me look right away to the fact that Jesus has overcome this world and in him I have peace that overrides my circumstances. Wow, what a great reminder! Happy New Year, everyone!

  39. zach v says:

1″All this I have told you so that you will not go astray

Lord, let me not go astray. Thank you for not letting me do it this year and let me live for you next year, the year after that, and all the years I have on Earth. Thank you so much for my growth this year and let me grow even more next year. Amen.

  40. Allie Mooorefield(: says:

21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Great verses. This chapter talks a lot about life in general. In this life I will suffer and have grief but once i am with the one i love, i will forget about all the anguish and i will have an everlasting joy! Now is the time of my grief but when i see my Father and get to be with him forever, i will rejoice and no one can take away my joy(: Im so excited that i will have an everlasting joy because it reminds me of those days you have so much joy and someone can just say something simple that can immidiately take it away! But in heaven, NO ONE can take that away (: Jesus warns us in verse 33 that we will have trouble and experience trials in this life. But we must take heart and love one another because he has overcome the world (: That is so comforting! Praise the Lord
Happy New Year! Praise the Lord for a great 2009!
My goal for 2010 is to be a light shining Gods glory and to evangelize without fear!!

  41. Karsten Klein says:

27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

God loves me because I love Jesus and believe he is my savior. If I follow Jesus and do whatever he says than I can be sure that I will go to heaven because God loves me!

  42. Pastor Bobby says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is one of my favorite verses and it is great to read it right now at the beginning of 2010! Even if this year brings trouble, I can know that Jesus has overcome and that can give me confidence to face the future!

  43. Dan Blankenship says:

    John 16

8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
    9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
    10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

I love this section of verses which foreshadow the work of the Holy Spirit. I am so thankful for the Holy Spirit in my life who has convicted me and led me to faith in Christ Jesus for the forgiveness of my sin. I love how Christ lays down the conviction of the Holy Spirit in three words.

Sin: Conviction of our problem with a sinful nature.
Righteousness: Conviction of the righteousness of Christ who lived the perfect life we couldn’t live.
Judgment: Conviction of our culpability to God regarding sin and our eternal judgment.

I wonder what was going thru the minds of the apostles when Jesus was enlightening them to the third person of the Trinity.

Thank you Lord for choosing me to be your child.

  44. Emily Knudsen says:

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This verse stood out to me alot because i feel that God is saying to just take on the world and to trust in him no matter what! Because the world can throw many hardships, and bad things in your life and its up to you to trust that God will help you through all your troubles! :)

  45. Rebekah Foreman 2010 says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

We will have hardships in our life but we can overcome then like God overcame this world. We will be tested day in and day out with our faith but we must stand strong.
