29:1 He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck,
will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
2 When the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
3 He who loves wisdom makes his father glad,
but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4 By justice a king builds up the land,
but he who exacts gifts tears it down.
5 A man who flatters his neighbor
spreads a net for his feet.
6 An evil man is ensnared in his transgression,
but a righteous man sings and rejoices.
7 A righteous man knows the rights of the poor;
a wicked man does not understand such knowledge.
8 Scoffers set a city aflame,
but the wise turn away wrath.
9 If a wise man has an argument with a fool,
the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.
10 Bloodthirsty men hate one who is blameless
and seek the life of the upright.
11 A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
but a wise man quietly holds it back.
12 If a ruler listens to falsehood,
all his officials will be wicked.
13 The poor man and the oppressor meet together;
the Lord gives light to the eyes of both.
14 If a king faithfully judges the poor,
his throne will be established forever.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
but the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
he will give delight to your heart.
18 Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint,
but blessed is he who keeps the law.
19 By mere words a servant is not disciplined,
for though he understands, he will not respond.
20 Do you see a man who is hasty in his words?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
21 Whoever pampers his servant from childhood
will in the end find him his heir.
22 A man of wrath stirs up strife,
and one given to anger causes much transgression.
23 One’s pride will bring him low,
but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
24 The partner of a thief hates his own life;
he hears the curse, but discloses nothing.
25 The fear of man lays a snare,
but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
26 Many seek the face of a ruler,
but it is from the Lord that a man gets justice.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous,
but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked. (ESV)

Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.
This is very clear: if one hears the gospel and refuses to repent and trust fully in Christ there will be a time when God’s patience runs out. And in a blink of an eye destruction happens – no more chances, no more do overs. Because God doesn’t strike us down immediately we put off the decision. But everything in the bible points to the return, with a sword, of Jesus. And then it’s too late. Thank You God for your patience! People, who have heard the Word accurately presented at True North, don’t delay!
6 An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad.
This is so true, as christians, when we are doing good, we are full of joy becasue we know that are sins are forgiven becasue of GOds grace. HIs grace makes us abhor sin and do good which brings joy that is awesome.
Mmmmmmm proverbs always delivers!
16. When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.
This is something we should be doing but we generally tend to overlook…at least I do a lot…but not only keeping yourself pure but also we need to want to keep others out of sin and crush that sin! be spiritual warriors and fight for rightousness
25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
Matthew 10:28 “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” We should not fear man, but fear God because God can kill both the body and the soul. While man can only kill the body. God has the choice to send us to heaven or hell, while man can choose wheather we live or die in this life. It reminds me of evangelism where people might not go because they are afraid and they have fear of what people might say to them or what they think about them or if they get persecuted, but we should be not ashamed of the gospel we should have rejoice in our hearts about what the Lord has done for us on the cross! 2 Timothy 1:8″So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God”or we should not fear persecution because we will be reward in Heaven!Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Our faith should make us overcome this fear, because we know that we are doing the Lord’s will and we know that bringing glory to God is the what life’s all about!
25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
It’s not an issue of fearing God MORE than we fear man; it’s an issue of not fearing man at all. If we are being held back because of our worries about what others will think of us, we will not be effective at all in spreading the Gospel. If we are scared of persecution, we will shy away from confrontation and not tell anyone about the Gospel. But if we follow the command of Matthew 10:28 and fear the God who can both kill our bodies and cast our souls into Hell, then we will be able to accomplish great things for Christ. When we stop worrying about ourselves and start to fear God’s judgement for disobedience, it becomes easier to recognize and do the right thing, even in the midst of persecution.
What an awesome chapter! to get more we should read it twice.. but i like verse 25
25fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.
I love this verse and rejoice in the second part of it…. what a blessing to know that if we rely on God he will keep us safe!!! i rely on thhis fact everday and rejoice and pray throu this promice! so shoukd you!!!
11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
Sometimes it might be really easy to get angry in situations. But it is important to remember that keeping it under control is what a wise man would do, and what the Lord wants for us to do.
I loved this chapter! And it feels so great to be back here on SOTD!
11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
Wow, what a great reminder for me! Like Derek said, it’s really easy sometimes to just “vent” out anger. Maybe someone just got me really upset, and it’s easy to turn to a friend and say, “Can you believe what so-and-so just did to me?!” Not only is that being a fool, but it’s also gossiping. We need to learn to pray at the moment we feel like “venting”, and rely on Christ to help us control our mouths and keep ourselves under control!
25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
Great comment on this, Mike! I’ve really never stopped to see this verse that way. It’s not that we need to have a greater fear of the Lord than fear of man. But that we need to have no fear of man at all! The last part of this verse is so comforting. When we place our fear and trust in the only area that we should be fearing (the LORD!), He promises to keep us safe. That’s really awesome!
8 Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.
This verse reminds me of Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God” and Romans 12:18, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” I need to work to diffuse arguments, calm tensions, and live at peace with people. Of course this does not mean that I avoid tension and strain in relationships because of my witness of Christ. Rather it means that I should be quick to overlook wrongs, hold back on a “comeback” remark and offer forgiveness when I have been wronged.
6 An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad.
As Zach has already said, as Christians, we can rejoice and be glad because we know that forever our sins have been forgiven. Non-christians may be really happy now but they will all in thte end be snared for theeir sins in the fires of hell.
20 Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
In Proverbs limiting speech and taking heed to advice seems a common emphasis found throughout the book. It is very wise and helpful to take the advice of a wise parent or elder rather than engage in an argument in which the prevalence of words will most likely lead to some sort of sin or anger. We have to realize that there is a time to speak and a time to listen, and notice the connection between speaking in haste and sinning. Colossians 4:6 “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” We should correct people if their beliefs are wrong, but with words that are full of grace.
20 Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
This verse emphasizes that we need to learn to think before we speak! We may not be foolish, but if we don’t take time to consider what we say, we’ll probably end up looking pretty stupid.
I agree with you Mike….I think I got a little sidetrack on that cross reference from Matthew 10:28 and commenting on that verse…verse 25 just talks about only not to fear man…
Verse 16: “When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.”
It pretty much says the same thing in Psalm 38:34,38 “…when the wicked are cut off you shall see it.” “…The future of the wicked shall be cut off.” Those wrapped up in sin become accustomed to it and are’nt aware of the path of destruction they are on. But those who are righteous can see what the wicked are headed towards and hopefully the righteous will lead them back to the right path or learn from their sins. And echoing what you said Dulos of righeousness…Lets grow in righteousness!!!
As for me I watch and hope for the Lord!!!!
11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control
I like this verse because it just shows us how to be wise we just need to keep ourselves control.
26 Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that man gets justice.
this verse reminds me of some of the verses we read this weekend during dan’s sermon. the ones talking about how the pharisees would pray and worship in the sinagouges and show pain on their face when fasting, so people would acknowledge them and think highly of them.
But we know that God will reward us for being humble and not boasting or being prideful about how “godly” we are. Good reminder verses:D
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.
I have heard alot of people (including Christians) say, “Im never gonna hit my kid (or disipline) them.” What are they thinking? If you look at any kid who has not been disiplined his whole life, they are unruley and have no manners or sense of politeness….they are a “problem child”. It is SO important to disipline your kids. Even though we are still only in High School we can still think about this. From the kid’s point of veiw also. When you get in trouble from your parents, you know in your heart that they had a good reason to disipline you. You may carry a grudge, but you need to realize that they are disiplining you because they love you. If my dad didnt give me the belt for all the times I disobeyed him, I would have problems. I never would of learned to respect my parents. Now that I look back on it, I’m glad my dad punished me for all the times I disobeyed him, because now there is peace in our household. My family trusts each other and there are not as many problems with each other. No family is perfect, but disipline can really bring a family in close. To go back to disiplining your kids from a parents point of veiw, its a good thing. Yes, it is bad if you are beating your kids for no reason out if terms, but that isnt disipline. Some people look at “abuse” and say that disipline is the same thing. It obvioulsy isnt. Nothing good comes out of Abuse, but disipline brings peace.
26 Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that man gets justice.
Men will try to seek to gain the approval of those they view as superior. In this example in Proverbs, they try to gain the favor of rulers and kings. People think getting into the right group, rather that be friends with the king, or the popular kids at school, will bring them happiness or acceptance by others. However, as Christians our happiness is not dictated by who we have gained favor from, but solely from our Father. We must make sure we have pleased our Father and rest in his unfailing grace.
7 The righteous care about justice for he poor, but the wicked have no such concern.
This is an awesome verse for the holidays!!! Christmas has just passed, and there are many people that didn’t get a Christmas at all. If we are righteous people we need to be kind and courteous to those people less fourtunate than us. God gives us the air that we breath, and he gives us the gift of life every morning. We don’t rightfully deserve anything, God himself blesses us with all things that we come upon in life. Thank you God!!!
11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
This verse is convicting! So often I let anger rise up inside of me when someone wrongs me and then I use my tongue to lash out against them. This verse tells me that I am a fool when I do that. The wise thing to do is immediately pray when I feel angry and ask God for self-conrtol in the situation. If I choose to trust God to handle the wrong against me instead of trusting in myself to right the wrong it is a wise thing to do.
Kyle and Luke great comments! Kyle, I loved your references, and Luke, that made a lot of sense :)
13 The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
I really like this verse because it brings our society/world into perspective. I remember back when we (USA) were invading Iraq and taking over the city of Baghdad, and on the news they would show pictures of the beggers in the streets and then show pictures of Saddam in his palace with his body guards and nice cloths. The difference of the quality of life between the two was so different that it was shocking. The oppressor (Saddam) was living the “good life”, while the poor people were left in the streets to fend for themselves. How could these to very different people have anything in common? The answer is God’s grace. God’s grace is impartial, it does not judge and it is not bought at a price, it is completely up to God on who is favor rests (even if it does no make sense to us). Everthing that happend to both of them was under the approval of Yaweh. God is in complete control of everything, and to not find joy and peace in this would be foolishness.
15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. 16 When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall. 17 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul
K sorry my computer was wierd and didnt let me finish. I was going to talk about how God(and any loving parent) punishes us so that we can learn from our mistakes and be better prepared for our lives. If no one teaches us right from wrong then anything we do will be ok in our eyes. Without punishment we would surely bring destrucion and disgrace to our family and a bad example of God.
18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law.
Hmm? Do we really believe that we will be blessed if we do what God says in his Word? Do we think the Scriptures will make us happy? I think that this is a key ingredient to faith that we often leave out. If people really believed this it seems like there would be more of us here on SOTD!
25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
Sometimes its easy to be caught up in pleasing other people because we don’t want to make them feel bad. But even though it might be temporarily good, fear of man is a snare. It might lead to us conforming in certain things or being quite when we have a chance to evangelize. Kinda like in verse 5 how we shouldn’t just be flattering, we need to be careful that we aren’t always looking to just please people but instead be looking to please God. God does command that we show love to people, but love isnt always just making someone feel good. Love might involve confrontation of someone in sin or awkward situations, but in the end it leads to true edification and spiritual benefit. We need to seek God first and He will provide what is truly beneficial to our lives.
25Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.
I liked this verse because it tells how to fear God above all things. and that if we truly trust in Him we will never have to worry about things because God will always be on our side and help us get throgh things.
25Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.
I liked this verse because it tells how to fear God above all things. and that if we truly trust in Him we will never have to worry about things because God will always be on our side and help us get throgh things.
23 A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.
Pride comes before the fall. When we are proud it’s only going to bring us down. We can’t take any of our accomplishments for granted because we didn’t deserve any of them. A man of lowly spirit is granted honor. This means when we do something good, we don’t take all the credit for it. We give the glory to those who deserve it, which means giving God the glory for all the good things we may do. That’s how we can be honored, by honoring others instead of being pridefull.
15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
This is a good verse, it tells us that we need a person to watch over us and makes sure to correct our mistakes.
6 An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad.
This chows how true joy comes from the Lord. This is also why we have such a great time at Revival! It’s because we are so close to God and we are filled in His Word every day!
16 When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.
Great comment Vanessa! I totally agree with what you said.
25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
We should always be trusting in the Lord in ever part of our lives. Every second of every day we should never fear man because as Christians we have God on our side and he is all-powerful and we as mere humans are nothing compared to him!
15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
supriszingly i gelt i could really relate to this verse.
when a shild is young and does not do what is right their mom is constantly saying don’t do that or no. the mother gets tired of saying those words very quickly thinking she is continually scolding her child….she is.. but anyways
i had the priviledge of watching caleb today while my aunt was not feeling to well but i found myself constantly nagging and correcting caleb’s odd behaviors.
we as children of God should not continually make the same mistakes as a young child does, but when we say sorry and repent we shall stay far from those sins being sure to not repeat them. we need to have a consistent discipline for ourselves. accepting rebuke and repenting when we know to do so.
13 The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
God created each and every single person on this planet. Rich or poor we all have that in common. Unfortunately we don’t all have the same sight which God graciously gave us…some of us see what we are doing wrong and repent while others don’t care and keep on doing what they shouldn’t.
