Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
One of You Will Betray Me
21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table close to Jesus, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
A New Commandment
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. (ESV)

This is going to be an awesome week on SOTD! The next few days will be Jesus talking to his disciples on the night before he died! This chapter emphasizes the love Jesus showed to his disciples and that he tells them to pass on to one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
I hope that this could be true of us at True North that we would genuinely care for one another in a way that stands out as different from this world. This means that we need to pursue those who do not naturally fit in and that we need to greet others who we would not normally talk to. I am praying that we can grow in our love like this in 2010!
Boy, that was a harsh verse to end the reading on. SHEESH! I was touched by verse 1b and verse 3…
1b Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
The potency of Jesus bearing public humiliation and shame, and enduring an excruciating public pummeling and execution for ME is piercing. THIS spurs me on. This love He had for ME, before time was created and before even my GRANDparents were thought of, He knew those of us who would receive His love, and His plan was to come for us, and ultimately, to take us back Home with Him…
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God…
God is sovereign and in total control. His plan is perfect. Even the evil that intertwines itself into our world. He has dominion over it, and USES it, for His glory and the good of His believers. UN. BE. LIEV-ABLE. Thank You, Father…may my life be a living thank You note to You all the days You’ve entrusted to me here on this earth, to authentically share this love You’ve shown me with others.
14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Wow, great chapter! Sometimes when people talk about this verse they think that Jesus example of washing the disciples feet is such dramatic, sacrificial love, maybe because in our culture we don’t do this. They had the dusty roads and wore sandals so a servant washing their feet was the most practical basic thing. Jesus has set an example for us to love one another in a way that is practical and meeting basic needs! My prayer this morning is that God would just help me be more aware of those needs in people around me and to quickly obey that prompting by serving them! Maybe I could cook a meal for someone or babysit someone’s kids or even just call to encourage someone today. I want to be more obedient to Christ’s command to love other believers as he loved the disciples in this chapter–practically serving them in a tangible need-meeting way!
Thanks for your posts Pastor Bobby, Stacy and Christa!
God gives us the perfect plan, the perfect example of how to fulfill the commands of God and the warning (v.38) of how we will always fail without Him. Let’s be like Christ and let His Spirit drive us to do what we can’t – love one another His way! Please Lord, come soon! And until then let us preach the gospel in word and deed.
16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him
this is a good reminder that no one is close to how good God is and no one will ever be!
i don’t know how anyone could betray Jesus! Especially if you are with him all the time and see his goodness everyday! I pray i will never be like Judas!
2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
31When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.
32If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
What a rich and powerful chapter this is! First I want to point out how awesome it is that God used a sin prompted by the devil to work out for His glory! If Judas was not prompted by the devil, Jesus would not have died on the cross, and would not be glorified as a savior once He rose from the dead. Even though this world isn’t perfect, God is still able to ordain the sin in it to work out for good (Rom. 8:28). Everything going on in this world will eventually work out for His glory because it was created for Jesus (Col. 1:16). Its amazing to think how completely sovereign God is when you look at it that way! Its pitiful to think that I spend even a moment of my day worrying about the future when I am a child of this same God! I want to be able to trust that God is in complete control at all times and be thankful in every circumstance because He is good and his love is neverending!
14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
I need to be a servant to others. I can serve God through serving others and humbling myself before them. Jesus set an example for us to follow so whenever I am in doubt of what I should do, I should remember His example. I need to obey God’s command. Following His example is obedience, and some day when I reach heaven, I want Him to say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Every time I face temptation I need to remember all Jesus suffered for me and remember that when I sin it pains Him. God is so good and made the ultimate sacrifice for me, so I need to give my all in serving Him:)
33″My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
36Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
This is my favorite part of this passage. If you love someone and they have to leave, of course you would want to go with them and follow. In this case Peter loved the Lord so much he said he wanted to lay down his life for Him and he wanted to follow the Lord and go with Him. If i was in Peters position i do realize that that would be so hard to have to hear that the Lord, whom he loved, would have to leave and he couldnt follow. It would be extremely difficult. I am sure Peter got a sick feeling in his stomach when he heard the Lord say he would disown Him three times.
I think it would also be so comforting to hear from the Lord that, even though no one could follow Him now, they would be with Him another day. “you will follow later”

4″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
The disciples knew they were supposed to love God and love their neighbors as themselves. However, Jesus tells them love is a new commandment because He raises the standard…not just to love others as we love ourselves, but to love others they way He has loved us. That means we must be willing to lay our lives down for our brothers and sisters…that is intense! While it is probable that I will never have to literally give my life for another person, I am called to lay it down figuratively every day. That means I must choose to put other’s needs before my own, give up my free time to serve God and love others, and basically live a life of service to God and others that puts “me-time” out of the equation. Lord, it is difficult to die to myself and love others the way You love me. Please help me to love with the strength you provide through the Holy Spirit, a love that will set me apart from the world and make me stand out as different because I love like You do!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Out of all the fruits of the spirit the most important is love. Jesus makes it clear that we should love others, even our enemies, to show them the love of Christ. It is important for me to remember that when I disagree with someone, they are watching my reaction and I need to represent Christ. I am so thankful that God loves me and I pray that I would be able to turn someone to Christ by living my life in love.
I love verse 13. It really shows that Jesus wants his disciples to understand his importance as well as who he really is. He became real in their life and I hope he can be as real in mine.
What awesome stuff in this chapter. John is such an awesome book to read!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
As it was said in verse 15, Jesus has set the example for us and I need to be a Christ follower and obey what He has commanded. I need to love and obey and go and make disciples. He is God and died for our sins. A price that could never be paid. And sometimes I feel like I forget that. That GOD!!! the ONE and ONLY died for you and me and offered us the GIFT of ETERNAL LIFE through repentence and faith. Jesus was the greatest example on Earth and I want to live a life pleasing to Him! :D
***GIVE GOD THE GLORY!!!***
Nice Payton, nice! :D
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
mmmmmmmmmm this is soooooo true. At school I always hear people tell me why they “lost the faith”…it’s because they see how hypicritical we are! Many have told me that Christians have gotten in fights with them, or just completely ignore them because they aren’t followers of Christ…es malo! They’ve also told me that we get in fights with each other!!!! :O how horrific is that?! Nownownow that is not the way a Christian should be acting that’s fo sho! As a follower of Christ, I will strive to live the way Jesus wants me to live in order to glorify His name and one way I can do that is through loving others. :) MARANATHA!
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
Many people talk about how they would die for Jesus, and yet they don’t live for HIm. They tell how bold they would be to preach the Gospel if it was illegal, but since it isn’t the thought never crosses their mind. They say they want to be with Him, and yet they live lives that are completely caught up in this world. As Christ demonstrated, this is NOT true love at all. Following Christ is more than just an idea or concept; it takes sacrifice and obedience even in hard times. Christ knew that He would son be dead, and so the thing he emphasizes most to His disciples is how their love needs to be active. I need to follow Jesus’ example and show my love for others through serving them, going out of my way to do things for them that I would not normally do. Like Bethany said, many people “fall away” or are driven away from the faith because of hypocrisy; But if I live to serve as Christ did, when they look at my life they will see what a Christian truly is, and that difference may be what I need to open a door to tell them the Gospel.
20I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
Verse twenty was a great verse. And it was one of my favorites!!!! Great Chapter today in the book of John!!!
A servant is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him. -John 13:16
Thinking of how Jesus came into this world to serve is mind blowing. Though he was God, he also came to earth to the the will of the father and serve; making himself not equal to God in a way. Because a servant is not greater than his master.
I’m not trying to say that God is better than Jesus, but just the way that Jesus humbled himself down, and took the form of a servant (Philippians 2:5-8), just for us is amazing!
In Philippians 2:5 it says: Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus
Jesus became a servant when he entered this world, serving the Father without complaint. That is how it should be in my life as well. I will change my attitude so it will be like Jesus’. I will be a servant in this world, serving Jesus Christ!
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
yesterday in John 12 we learned about how the women humbles herself and washes Jesus’ feet with very expensive perfume. here we learn about how Jesus humbles Himself to wash His disciples’ feet. this is really amazing to think about! at Christmas, we celebrate the time where God came to live with sinful man! that is a great example of humility! but we also learn that Christ humbled Himself in so many areas, like in this chapter where He washes His disciples feet. He says in verse 15 that He has set a pattern and an example for us as believers. He has shown us how to act towards our brothers and sisters in Christ: to humbly serve them. Jesus came not to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28). so Christians need to serve each other, and not expect to be served.
i pray that in my life i would have a true servants heart, that is not looking for myself to be built up, but to build up others. i need to humbly recognize my duty in the body of Christ to serve others. this season it is especially important that i follow the example of our Lord Jesus Christ! just as He humbled Himself to man, so i need to humbly sacrifice for my brothers and sisters in Christ!
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
I really like this verse! It is a really important thing to do if you are a follower of Christ. God is love, therefore, love others as Christ has loved you. This is what I think about if I struggle with showing someone love! I just think about the sacrifice God made and all the love that he showed on the cross, and that definitely changes my perspective. I know that I need to be showing non-Christians love as well, which can also be difficult. Sharing the gospel is definitely a way of showing love and care since I would not want to be selfish by keeping the truth to myself. My prayer is that I will be bold and fearless when sharing the good news with others! Matthew 10:28!!!!!
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
You know this command may seem pretty easy, but it can be pretty difficult in fact. I have a tendency to see the negative in people, so already undesirable people look even worse to me, so, I just don’t like them. Loving others is so difficult for me for some reason. But then I think, God loves us so much, we must be good people then, right? Well let’s see….. no. If God can Love US, then I should be able to get over myself and Love others as He Loves me. This verse is now on my wall…
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
Oh I really like this verse. It’s such a simple but hard command. The world twists the meaning of love into a whole bunch of different things but 1 Corinthians 13 is what God calls love. Also in 1 John 3:10 . I cannot say I love God but hate someone else. Since God gave His one and only son for me, why is it hard to love my enemies. As a sister in Christ I want to share His love with other people and always encourage and love them like Jesus did and from that people will know that I am a disciple of Christ!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
If you notice, most people really don’t care about others. They may say to them that they’re sorry about this or that or that they hope that something changes for the person….but mostly these are just words and they don’t *honestly* care. As a Christian, I need to be different…..and not just different by doing nice things for people in need but ultimately I need to share the Gospel with them. If I do other “nice” things for them but not this then I have failed…..the status of the person’s soul is really the only things that matters. But even if they refuse to listen, I still must show them love other ways, so that they might listen later. I’m not going to give up on sharing the Truth with others!
8″No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
This verse just reminds me of the reliance we have on Christ!! Without Jesus, we are unclean. Jesus’ act of washing the disciples feet showed how he will eventually cleanse us from our sin by dying on the cross and rising again. The disciples did not understand the importance at the time, but we can now see how this should give us humble attitudes like Jesus’. PRAISE JESUS for the sacrifice and grace!! :D
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
This command that Christ gave to us should not be taken lightly. This is a very important command because as followers of Christ we should be showing our love to others and setting an example for others to see what Christianity is all about. This way we can help non believers find their path to Christ!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
Jesus loves us so much that he layed down his life and died for us!! Jesus is telling us to love one another in the way that we put other people above ourselves, just as he did for us.
38Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
this is such a condemning verse. would i really lay down my life for the Lord?? will i really give up everything for Him?? i should!! this is something i really need to be remembering and thinging about evryday!!
ELLO… I read
I like verse 5,”After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”
I like this verse because JESUS sets an example for me to follow. JESUS who is GOD humbled HIMSELF to do the job that was only done by servants. JESUS made HIMSELF nothing HE loved us so much that HE died a death HE never deserved. HE could have just started over and killed us all but instead HE humbled HIMSELF to nothing and gave HIS life for us. I need to follow HIS example and make every sacrifice I can for the kingdom of GOD and be as humble as I possibly can.
CYA
14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
Jesus was the perfect example of how a leader is supposed to serve others! Jesus, the creator of the entire world was washing his creations feet! That is quite amazing! I need to follow Christ’s example and make sure that I am always serving!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
Jesus wants us to love each other as he has loved us. How many of us can claim that we love our neighbors in the way Christ does, I can’t! It’s so easy to harbor self pity, jealousy, and anger against other people, but Jesus commands us to love one another! I always talk about how amazing God’s love for me is, I’m going to pray that the Lord helps me show that love in my life!
37Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
Like maddie said, how many of us would really throw down our lives for Jesus? Easier said than done right? I know I could say that i would but when faced with the decision i dont know if i could follow through. I need to focus on giving up ALL my sin for HIM!! :D
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
It’s pretty easy to forget about how much Jesus humbled Himself for us in His life on earth. During Christmas I was just remembering how He humbled Himself in becoming an insignificant human and died for us. And then here again today He washes the disciples feet as a servant. Jesus’ love is amazing- He gave so much for me even through I haven’t done one thing to deserve it. This just contrasts my selfishness when I don’t do things for others because it’s inconvenient. LORD, please help me to show true humility and sacrificial love for others, because you gave so much to love me.
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
These verses stood out to so many of us today! Like so many of you, I want to love people more in the way that Christ loves us and showed love to His disciples. My prayer is that I’d be more aware of ways I can practically show love to others…especially other believers.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
As Christians, we need to be loving to one another. This can be hard sometimes with certain people, but its a must do. With the way we love one another, just as much as we love God, people will realize how much different we are. As Christians, we stand out differently than the rest of the world because of the way we live and love. So if we really call ourselves Christ’s disciples, then lets love one another unconditionally.
1 Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
Jesus showed his love for the people on earth for the entire time he was here, but then before he was going to be killed his full extent of love was being shown, wow i woiuld love to have been there when his full love was being shown because he already loved us enough tgo come down and die on a cross for us i wonder how much more he showed his love
c u all soon
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Jesus washed His disciples feet because He wanted to show them that He is a servant. And now in verse 15, He says that He has set an example that we should follow. Jesus was a servant, we should follow His lead and do the same. Now it’s our job to follow His example and be a servant.
3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
I love this verse. JESUS knew that he was from the father (GOD) and going back to him, and that everything was under his control. He, however humbled himself and washed the feet of the disciples. He who could have destroyed heaven and earth humbled himself to be the least of worthless men. We are worthless. GOD is great. It is so amazing that he would die for us.
14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
The Lord is our teacher and leads by examples He wants us to be kind to our neighbors and not to judge people or trea people differently. I pray that I will be like our Lord and lead by example. and Follow Gods examples.
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
I love this verse because it is something we as christians sometimes struggle at, and if we can overcome the that guard us from accomplishing this than we will be great!!
35 “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
This is a very hard command that I need to work on. I’m not always wanting to be loving to my friends, much less, my enemies and the kids who don’t have a lot of friends. But its a command in the Bible, not only that, but I also need to live out my faith. How could someone know I’m a Christian if I don’t love those around me? I need to work on loving EVERYONE all the time, not occasionally.
!!!MARANATHA!!!
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
We all need Jesus to wash us clean of our sins, no matter what. Even though I think I’m unworthy (which I am), I still need to do this instead of rejecting it because I don’t deserve it if I want to be with Jesus.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
I need to love everyone, even my enemies and even those who annoy or make fun of me. This is because if I do this, people will see how kind I am and will see the light of Christ in my life. Hopefully, this would lead to them coming to Christ and giving up their life of sin.
NO REGRETS!!!
Wanting to live a life with no regrets.
I know I have to change my attitude at home towards my parnet before I can start talking to my fellow nieghbors. I been doing been doing pretty well on it for the past couple of days and hoping to finally reach the time of spreading the Good News around. Loving the ones that you really dont likke is a challenge, but remembering that Jesus loved even the ones that killed him. My parnets always say to kill them with kindness.
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
This is a key verse because it is true how we should try to follow the example Jesus provided. He was perfect, therefore if we try to copy the way he lived, we would be doing nothing wrong. Unfortunately we aren’t perfect but we still should try our best.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
This verse encourages me, or rather tells me, to be loving to those around me. Ever since Bobby preached the message about true love and how being “nice” isn’t true love I have been striving to be more loving to my immediate family. This verse tells me to keep it up and try harder. Lord, let me be loving to my family and friends and look out for their needs and not just myself.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
LOVE is a big deal, and this chapter reminds us of that. Our God is a God of love and he commands us to do just that. If he IS love, then that should shine through us as well. If you hate a brother or sister, how are you showing them that you are God’s child? I feel like sometimes it’s hard to love certain people, but then I remember that if God could love ME, an unworthy sinner, then I should love others too! I want to have a heart full of love that represents Christ. This week I want to try to put others before myself, and do something for someone out of love, that I wouldn’t normally do!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
This is one of Chirst’s greatest commandments. All of us know that it is easy to love someone that is good to you. How hard is it for us to love someone that does nothing for us or treats us negativly? God commands that we love even those who are unkind to us. Through this we will be able to show God’s great love and be good examples to the world. I need to step it up and love everyone just as Christ commands me.
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
If theres one way we as Christians are supposed to stand out its by our love. If non-Christians are being more loving than we are we won’t be representing Christ well AT ALL. I’m praying that God convicts me and shows me ways to be MORE loving and more like Him!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
The world’s view of love is very different from real love. God demonstrates real love to us, because he is love. Sometimes, I think, do I really love anyone? Do I actually care more for them than I do myself? That is the love that Jesus demonstrated. And as a follower of him I need to show other people that I am a Christian by demonstrating the love God has shown me to them! And that means having a servant heart in everything. I am praying that God will really help me to show true love to EVERYONE I come into contact with!
PRAISE THE LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!
19″I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.
How cool is it that John documents the fact that Jesus even tells the disciples what will happen $ why?! Predictive prophecy is God’s fingerprint on history, & it’s all over the Bible. No other religion even tries to make such predictions!
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Great Scripture!
Jesus loved his disciples, and lived a perfect life. I as a Christian strive to be like him. I know that I need to tell other people about him, so that more and more can try to be like Him. It’s basic Christian Multiplication! Lets go forth and strive to be like Christ as much as we can!
Jesus said his disciples would be known for their love. In fact, this is the attribute that would most clearly identify them as Christ’s disciples!
Am I known for my love? Or, do I love in such a radical way that causes people to look at me and say, “He follows Christ!”
May we excel still more in our love at True North!
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
I find this verse to be complicated for a lot of us as sinners. A lot of times we get caught up in hatred and jealousy and we forget that a perfect man who was spat upon still loved everyone with all his heart. And for someone to do the slightest thing to us, we immediately hate them and refuse to even look at them! Which is totally ridiculous because why are we hating when one of the biggest commandments in the Bible is to love one another as yourself! So love EVERYONE more than yourself because Jesus loved those who killed him! And since we do sin, pray that God would help you to love more and more everyday! :)
1 Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
Jesus showed his ultimate act of love when he died on the cross for us. We did nothing, absolutely nothing to deserve this love. We constatly sin against the one who created us, and yet God sent his son as an atoning sacrifice for sin. I marvel at the love and grace showed in this chapter and the few to come. Jesus loved us so much, so much he died so we could live with him forever. 1. I need to thank Jesus for what he did for me, and 2. i need to show love to others as Jesus has loved me.
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Wow, Jesus showed such humility here! He lowered himself to a servant’s position and washed his disciples dirty, gross feet. This really shows that Jesus’ main purpose was always to serve! He wanted to show his disciples that they should also be having the ‘here to serve’ mentality. I need have this mindset more and always be ready and willing to serve others in any way that I can. I want to emulate Jesus’ actions here and be a servant in this world!
Maranatha!!!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
This is such an important command that me must follow!!! It sometimes is hard to treat people nicely who may have done something mean to you!! But this command just doesnt imply to your friends!! It implies to everyone……event those who we may not like!!!! Jesus Christ loved us….so by trying to be like Christ, (as a Christian should be doing), we need to love others as well!!!!!!
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
How can people see christ through us if we aren’t treating eachother with love and respect? it is so important that we imitate God with our lives, because our actions, not our words, are what people will pay attention to. This is even a way of evangelizing, to an extent.
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
mmmmmmm i love this verse. I know everyone basically commented on it, but it still want to(: Its hard to actually LOVE someone, and by love i mean Jesus’ kind of love. He loved us so much that he was willing to DIE for us! do i really have that kind of love for my brothers and sisters in Christ? I need to strive to show people love and being a good example of Christ!
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
These verses really hit me because ever since I became a Christian, I have had a profound love for everyone around me. I didn’t realize for a while that it was one of the characteristics of Christians is to have such a deep love for everyone. It really has made a difference on how I see people. I have a great amount of respect for people that I used to not like and its a very helpful feeling. If it werent for my salvation I would be a cold-hearted teen who dislikes life. Thank the LORD for what hes done in my life!!!

Goodevening . . .
I read . . .
John 13 . . .
“20. I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
If there were non – believers that listened and BELIEVED what Jesus’ desciples were preaching, then they believed in God. And same vice versa. Whoever believes and trusts in Jesus and what His commands say, believe in the desciples that were sent by God.
“34. ‘A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
“35. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Yes, it may seem hard in some situations to NOT judge a girl. (especially for us girls) By the way shes dressed, what shes doing, who shes talking with, what shes talking about, and so much more. It seems next to impossible, I know for me it is, to care less of what shes doing but at the same time love her. These two verses are saying just that. God’s command for His sons and daughters is for us to love EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, JUST AS HE LOVES US! Yes, that may seem hard. (as I said earlier) But it’s NOT IMPOSSIBLE. I know with my Father in me, He’ll help me love others and show them the kindness and care that my Father shows me. When people (non – believers) see this, they may ponder and why we’re doing this. The true answer: WE’RE SHOWING THE LOVE THAT OUR FATHER SHOWS US.
I know this verse doesn’t really say anything about this, but this topic sorta’ came to mind. There WAS this huge situation on saying “Yes” to Pro 8 (allowing gay marriage) and ect. They main thing that they stood by to catch ALL SORTS OF PEOPLES attention was saying that “God loves EVERYONE.” Yes, that is true. (to some extent however) Jesus shows His love for everyone because He died on the cross for all and shed His blood for all. Other than that, God’s word says it perfectly clear that He finds men who lust after eachother is an “abomination” to God. Which makes complete sense. God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. How dare someone go against His will and mary the SAME sex. That’s just plain out, NASTY & WRONG.
Which brings me to this: Those same people I just talked about, yes you guessed it, we are to still show them LOVE. But not just love like, omg, I love you. Great job, keep doing what your doing. NO! We are to show them the love of Jesus and the blood that He shed for all. THEN, in a loving manner of course, share the gospel to them, and show them that He is the Way the Truth and the Life.
“36. Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
Simon Peter couldn’t go into Heaven with his Father yet, because he was going into Heaven later. Get it? Jesus was saying, as much as you love me and are willing to die for me, you cannot follow me Home now. Jesus was basically saying, I have a different plan for you. That plan, is to follow me Home with EVERYBODY else, or at least later.
KEWLNESS! I wanna’ go HOME! =)

Father,
I ask that you help me to keep my sisters in You accountable. It’s not a good habit to not call them, and not keep them in Your word. Jesus your word should never be neglected, and I ask that you assist me so I can call my Sisters. Your word clearly states to keep others accountable, fellowship with one another, and praise You together.
~ Amen
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
This is really something I struggle with. It’s not that I don’t love my brothers and sisters in Christ, and my friends and anyone I come in contact with, it’s just I’m not brightly and openly showing it. I definitely need to sacrifice my “I’m too cool to show love” attitude and be joyful and loving to those around me and through that I can be an evangelistic tool for Christ by showing His love. Thank God that he has made his Word crystal clear to those who have the Holy Spirit in them and that we can learn from it and go on living lives with “spiritual fervor”!
Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
The example set by Christ in the preceding verses shows his humility and love for his disciples. He served the men in the Upper Room by lowering himself and washing their feet. This was not a prestigious task and was usually reserved for a lowly servant. I wonder how much I am willing to do those task for others that offer little or no recognition. The tasks that are in no ways glamorous. I pray that my motivation for serving comes from a heart of love for the Lord and I am ready to serve with complete humility.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
This is so important! I want to be known by loving others. I want to follow Christ’s example in serving his disciples and showing he loves them and also by putting brothers and sisters in Christ first!
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Great chapter! I love verse 15! It is so simple and straight forward, yet it is so hard for most christians to do. CHrist set an example for us so we may do as he has done! God never sinned and was perfect and he humbled himself and died for us. Obviously, we are sinners and we cannot change that but we can try and strive to be more like Christ and try to be like Him by resisting sin and temptations. Just as Christ sacrificed his life for us, we should be sacrificing ourselves for others and God. If we show love to one another, it will prove to others that we are true disciples of the Lord. At school, there is so much gossip and both hating and liking certain people. If i showed love to everyone, i would stand out! I am praying that in 2010 i will stand out to others and show my love for others and the Lord my God!(:
37Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
Sometimes in our Christian life, we start out so on fire for Christ. We are willing to do anything for his sake. But so many times, that isnt always reality. As we see with peter, he disowned Jesus 3 times in one night. There have been times when my words or actions dont always reflect Christ. I need to make sure that I am constantly examining my actions to make sure that they are pleasing to God. But I am also thankful for God’s amazing forgiveness and that He is always there to help us thru our trials!
14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
I really like these verses. Jesus humbled himself and washed the disciples feet. That is a great example of being a servant. We need to follow Jesus’s example by serving others.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
As Christians, it is essential that we show in our actions–that we, like Christ, care for those around us. LOVE like Jesus did! WALK like Jesus did! BE a ‘little Christ’!
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you
Jesus Christ set the ultimate example for me to follow. He is God, yet he humbled himself two thousand and nine years ago (ballpark) and become fully human so that I could experience forgiveness of sins and have eternal life. Christ completely humbled himself and considered equality with God something not to be grasped. I need to reflect on this and realize that my pride and lack of humility will prevent me from serving Christ effectively. Lord help me to humble myself for your glory in 2010!!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
One of the last commands Jesus gives his disciples before he goes to be arrested and then hung on the cross is that which is stated above. The command is to love others. More than just loving them, Jesus commands them to love others by the same way which Jesus had demonstrated his love to them. Throughout his entire time with his disciples, he had shown many great examples of love. And obviously, the greatest act of love was yet to happen as Jesus said this right before being arrested to ultimately be crucified. And after this, Jesus tells his disciples that by their love they will be recognized as his disciples. So he first makes a command to love others. Then bolsters it by telling them to love others as he has loved them. And lastly he tells them to do this so much that this points as evidence to the fact that they are disciples of Jesus. I need to be all about loving others. I need to not be all caught up in myself. The world and its people are always pushing self, that you can build yourself up to be the best so you can be glorified in front of all men. I need to be more focused on loving others over myself. My level of love for others needs to follow the example set by Jesus. And lastly, I need to live a life characterized by love. The love of Jesus needs to be reflecting in my life so much that people will look at me and recognize me as a Christian because of my love. It needs to be weird how I can love others, regardless of what they have done to me or what the conditions are. I need to always strive for the same perfect and unconditional love that Jesus has shown for me!
John 13
14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
I am also praying that True North will be a place where everyone who visits or attends will be greeted made to feel welcomed and included. Like Bobby alluded to so often people fall thru the cracks of True North just because we are not focused on those who are not our immediate friends. We all need to make an effort to seek first those who are new or sitting by themselves. Our compassion for others should automatically draw us to these people who might not know anybody at True North. It’s ironic how we go out to evangelize but when it comes to True North we are not focused on who might need to be evangelized or friended within our midst. I hope that we will take care of the needs of these people before we go off and socialize with our friends. This is a Love that Christ displayed all the time to those who he had compassion for. Christ poured out compassion for the world and so too do we need to live our lives serving all men not just those who are close friends! They will know that we have the Love of God if we show one another brotherly love.
1st John 3:23 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
Great Chapter!!
True service is humbling yourself before others and doing things for others. Jesus, Lord of the universe, takes on the image of a slave. So should we. I want to live by a ‘here to serve’ mentality in which I lay down my life for others. I want to live to serve!
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
this is a great verse. loving one another is so important but is so hard sometimes. it is hard to love someone who has just done something to you, especially when you thought there were your friend or were close to you. i am going to work on loving my christian brothers and sisters like Jesus tells the disciples to love eachother. i want to be known just like them in loving others in the church
11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
I find this verse so interesting. I wonder what it would have been like to be there with Jesus and to know that I could have been the one who would betray Him. It is very convicting to think about that concept. I have betrayed Jesus too many times and i could have easily been in that position. I dont like the thought of that at all, and i know that i need to live my life more like Christ. There is no middle ground in my relationship with God. I am either for Him or against Him and i need to show that i am for God through my actions!!
Maranatha!
