27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.
2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
a stranger, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty,
but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.
4 Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming,
but who can stand before jealousy?
5 Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend;
profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
7 One who is full loathes honey,
but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.
8 Like a bird that strays from its nest
is a man who strays from his home.
9 Oil and perfume make the heart glad,
and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.
10 Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend,
and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity.
Better is a neighbor who is near
than a brother who is far away.
11 Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad,
that I may answer him who reproaches me.
12 The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
but the simple go on and suffer for it.
13 Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger,
and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress.
14 Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice,
rising early in the morning,
will be counted as cursing.
15 A continual dripping on a rainy day
and a quarrelsome wife are alike;
16 to restrain her is to restrain the wind
or to grasp oil in one’s right hand.
17 Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another.
18 Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and he who guards his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
so the heart of man reflects the man.
20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied,
and never satisfied are the eyes of man.
21 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
and a man is tested by his praise.
22 Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle
along with crushed grain,
yet his folly will not depart from him.
23 Know well the condition of your flocks,
and give attention to your herds,
24 for riches do not last forever;
and does a crown endure to all generations?
25 When the grass is gone and the new growth appears
and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered,
26 the lambs will provide your clothing,
and the goats the price of a field.
27 There will be enough goats’ milk for your food,
for the food of your household
and maintenance for your girls.

1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
No one knows what the future holds and we should never think or say that we know what is to come because the future rests with God, because He alone knows what is to come( Isaiah 46:9-10). In James 4:13-16 it also warns us to not boast about tomorrow. Then it reminds us that our lives are only for a short time and that when we boast we sin. Instead we should look forward to the future in anticipation to see God’s will for our lives and also to reflect on His goodness in the past. Who knows if God will allow us to live another day so while He still graciously keeps us here we must spread the gospel to others and stand firm in Christ against this sinnful world!
As for me I watch and hope for the Lord!!!
6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
Here we see that even when a friend says something that we don’t like, they still have our best interest at heart. If our enemy acts like they adore us, however, their praise should not be accepted with open arms.
19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.
Although the heart is not seen, what is in the heart will be shown by a mans character. It is so easy to say one thing and yet do another. I want my reflection outside to reflect the heart on the inside.
Amen Vsunshine! That is a great comment!
7 He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
Me and my family went out to dinner the other night to a restaurant. As we were walking down the street from the restaurant we came across a homeless guy who was begging. We had just had a big meal from a nice place and I was so full I did not want to get anything else, but I did not really appreciate what I had all that much. When we came across the homeless person, my parents decided to go get him a hot dog from the stand down the street. To me, the hot dog looked kinda gross, but to the homeless guy we gave it to, it might as well been a 100$ check. He grabbed it right from me and tucked it in his coat to keep it warm and safe. This made me appreciate what I do have, and reminded me that we are so blessed by God to live where we do and live the lives that we have. Everything is a gift of His grace, and we have no reason to boast.
19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.
The same verse stood out to me, Alicia. So often we pay more attention to the external things we do than the internal. When we do good things they need to be done out of a pure heart that is obeying God’s commands because of gratitude for all He has done for us and reverant fear for His powerful position as our Lord. If we are focussed on doing good things to look good or to please man then we have missed the point. We are just like the “whitewashed tombs” that Jesus used to describe the Pharisees. On the outside we look ok, but on the inside we are full of rotting bones! May we all strive to do good for God out of hearts that have been transformed by His Spirit within us.
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
Sometimes we must confront a friend about sin in their life, wounding for the purpose of healing (like v. 6 says). But often people, out of fear, will not do this and they say it is the loving thing to do, hiding behind “love” but not being willing to follow through with what is best for them. But really withholding rebuke from a friend in sin is a lack of love for them.
19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.
mmm what a great verse!!The condition of a mans heart indicates his true character.and good point Beth!so many times we have the chance to do good, yet most of the time it isnt from our heart.it is for seeking award and attention.
17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
another great verse!!Keep good company around us!Iron (company) is strong..it helps develop and mold our character.
17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
This verse is really cool. We as christians need to builod eachother up. And we need to be around other Christians so this happens. It says that as iron sharpens iron so a man sharpens another. I really like that. We will shapren eachtother adn become stronger together!!!!!!!!!!!
6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
Getting told you’re wrong is never a pleasant experience, but it is sometimes a necessary one. If you see a brother or sister in Christ who is in sin, it is your responsibility to restore him gently. Similarly, if you are confronted by another Christian about some sin, you need to ‘trust the wounds’ that he has inflicted and see the need to change. The enemy who says nothing, on the other hand, is not necessarily a nonChristian at all; it is the Christian ‘friend’ who sees that there is a problem but chooses to ignore it so he doesn’t have to rist confrontation. We need to be willing to tell other believers when they are in sin, and be open to correction when we are approached.
17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
I agree with you, Zach! We need to be encouragements to one another and build eachother up in Christ daily! Also, we should be wise in who we are friends with. Non-Christians will most likely bring you down, but Christians, your other brother and sisters in Christ will always be looking for ways to encourage you. I love how our ministry is good at encouraging others! Sure we can always be stepping it up though!
15 A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day;
16 restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.
Nagging, or quarrelsome; a steady stream of unwanted advice, is a form of torture. People nag because they think that they are not getting through, but nagging blocks communication. When tempted to engage in this deceitful habit, examine yourself, and your motives. Are you concerned about yourself- getting your way- being right, than about the person that you are pretending to help. If you are really concerned about other people, think of a more effective way to get through to them. Use words of patience and love.
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
I totally agree with Christa! The greatest way to show we love a friend is by confronting them about sin. Although it may be awkward, we need to care more about them being right with God then caring about whether or not they will be mad.
20 Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are the eyes of man.
this proverb states that eternal punishment (Death and Destruction) will never be filled up. this is a very sad thing if we think about it. people we know will have to suffer from this if they are not saved. they will never get used to hell, so we need to be telling them how to get out of it. likewise, the second part of this proverb states that the eyes of man are never satisfied. no matter how many “good” things we get on this fallen earth, nothing compares to the grace of God. it reminds of “All That Matters” Jesus is the only thing that satisfies and gives us life. Maranatha!!!
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
Sometimes we might not rebuke someone in sin because we think it will hurt them. But that’s not real love if it leads to them staying in sin. Even if it hurts at first, we need to be confronting each other on what we need to work on, so we can be strong in the Lord. And we need to do the same with nonchristians, because by being quite we may avoid hurting people’s feelings or getting yelled at, but it will lead to them going to Hell.
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. 2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.
Nobody likes some one who is concieted. I don’t remember the reference so if anyone does help me out but in the Bible it says that God will humble those who need it. If you are the type of person who thinks your so great because of what you do, just remeber that its God who gives you the power and gifts in the first place.
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
As has already been said, we should not boast about tomorrow for we know nothing about tomorrow. We could die before tomorrow or Christ could come back before tomorrow. The Lord is the only one who knows anything about tomorrow. As vsunshine already said, the God graciously gives us the next day of our lives. This is why we should live our life too the fullest for Christ because , who know’s, we could be taken from this earth before tomorrow.
Sorry I didn’t post yesterday, there was no excuse and God knows it!
I love your comment Mrs. Karlsson!
7 He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
I’m gunna add to what Hunter said. In this verse, we are the rich people. Food to us is almost tastleless because we’re never worried about food and whether or not we’ll get our next meal. But to those that are homeless, or to those that live in third world countries, food is something prized. We need to remember to give thanks to God everyday for everything that He provides us with, even the very breath that we take is something that should be prized.
17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
i have always liked this verse, i havent known it for that long but its a good one. It reminds me of one reason that i go to church. I am constantly surrounded by non christians and when i go tot smal groups or church i am able to bebetter prepared for anything i face. They also help me to realize what i have been doing wrong and get me running back on track. It is very important to have christian influences in your life and i am so very thankful for the numerous role models in mine:D
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
This verse really shows how we really need to arrange our outlook on life. We really don’t even know what will happen in the next minute. We should end all our plans with the words “If the Lord wills” …Without the will of God allowing us, we cant do anything. We really need to humble and examine ourselves and make sure that we are relying on God for every decision we make!
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
Every one who commented on this all had a great point. Just because you don’t want to hurt a freind’s feelings doesn’t give you an excuse to not tell them to stop doing something bad. Just because it may hurt them, in the long run it will be better off that we rebuked them rather than keeping it to ourselves. Keeping each other accountable is important becuase it’ll keep us on track. We shouldn’t let how it will affect the person’s feelings stop us from correcting them.
did anybody else realize that its the 27th were reading proverbs 27 and there is 27 verses? Well i found that interesting (=
Anywaysssssss……..
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
God has each of our days specifically planned out for us. We need to start living one day at a time and not worrying about the future because we have no idea what it is going to bring.
6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
When one of your friends lets you know that you are not doing so hot in one place in your life or another, accept it because if he or she is a christian, you can trust their judgement.
7 He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
A teens and adults living in Orange County, we tend to get a lot. We dont realize it either, and what we think to be nasty or worth nothing would be the most amazing things to a poor person. We need to be thankful for all we have and not get caught up in it.
19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.
I just love this verse, its soooo true! Who we are at heart will reflect who we are on the outside. We can be the most beautiful or handsome girl or guy around but with an ugly heart, the outside doesnt matter too much.
17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
This is sooo true and sooo important! Christians can help eachother so much by testing eachother and learning about the Lord together. I feel so complete after discussing with my friends the latest things I’ve learned about God through the Bible or a sermon, and then listening to what they’ve learned lately as well. I find it SO helpful to learn about God WITH other Christians. Its just so vital to our walk with the Lord to have good friends who will support us and rebuke us and help us learn more, and we have to do the same in return!
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Since i am in Carmel at the Apple store I have to remember it it is by God’s grace that I made it here safely. Each day when making our plans we have to keep in mind that it is by God’s grace that we are still sucking air and not dead. We shouldn’t be prideful, but instead always have faith that God will work out everything for his good and perfect will.
24for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.
I liked this verse because sometimes we can get so caught up in this world. but Christ can come back at any moment. this verse was a good reminder to not worry what other people might think about us, but to only fulfill why God still has us here on earth.
5.) Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
Just agreeing with everyone else in this one…we need to help our feloow believers out by pointing them in the right direction and confronting them on their sin.
ACCOUNTABILITY!!!
11 Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart; then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt.
This verse shows how much it hurts a parent when their child doesn’t listen to them. The father speaking here is ready to face contempt. He can handle the challenges of life brought on by enemies. But if his own son acts like an enemy he will not be able to handle it. The hurt will go too deep.
This is something to think about. How do you make your parents feel? Do you bring them joy because you are wise? Or do you bring them pain because you are foolish?
I also find that interesting Jenae since you pointed it out to me…it’s also interesting because there are 31 Proverbs and there is 31 days in this month also!
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love
Great verse! I too was thinking the samething as everyone else that is so loving is an open rebuke, it doesn’t feel nice to get rebuked but it really show that the person cares about you…they are being tough on you because they love you and they want you to be upright in the sight of God.
6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
Real friends will stab you in the front, it can be trusted they might hurt you or wound you because you need it, like being rebuked. But enemies they will give you “kisses” that multiplies and act like everything is okay.
20 Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are the eyes of man.
So true that the eyes of man are never satisfied because if they do bad they are not satisified and if they are doing well then greed will overtake them and they will just want more.
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
This is a great verse. It shows how it truley is more loving to tell someone off, even if it doesn’t feel good. It’s easy to just go with the flow, but harder to rebuke someone.
1 Do not boast about tomorrow for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Each day brings about a new challenge we need to face. How on earth are we supposed to know what these are going to be? I mean for me I never would have expected some things to happen to me, but in the end they brought me closer to Him which is His goal.
