John 11

The Death of Lazarus

11:1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.     25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    What an awesome statement from Jesus!!! We just celebrated his birth, but really this is what it gets down to… life after death! Jesus says he is this life and that we can have it through our faith in him! What an adventure that will be to pass through death and find life in Jesus on the other side! Praise the Lord that we can have this 100% confidence that we will live forever with Jesus! I want to live today ready to see him at any moment! Maranatha!

    Reminder: There is no True North this weekend, but please take some time to pray for 2010. Pray the Lord will continue his work in reviving high school students here in Orange County! I am spending time every day studying what God is going to teach us in the New Year!

  2. Meisha Preston [from COLD Chicago] says:

    Verses 25 and 26 really stood out to me. If I repent of my sins and put my faith in Christ I will never die. My body will die but my soul will live forever in heaven. What glorious hope. I have nothing to fear in life. If I believe in Chris I will never die.

  3. Dave Hosford, praying for Revival says:

    Great posts PBobby and COLD Meisha!

    John 11:35 Jesus wept.

    While Jesus has given us forgiveness He still feels for the conseqences of our sin. And He hurts… I pray that we would do what He says to please Him and that we would share with everyone whom God puts us in front of today. Let’s celebrate Christmas everyday and Easter too byt sharing the gospel and rejoicing in the benefits of those completed events! Lord, Please come soon!

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
    27″Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

    This is such an amazing promise. This statement should be more than enough reason for us to be joyful always and thankful in all circumstances. We really have no reason to worry or be upset because God is with us always and he gives us eternal life.

  5. angela voris says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    This is such a great promise, that even though in the end we will all die, we really do not have to worry. In the end our body will die but our soul will live on for ever with the Lord. this is such an encouraging verse because it just really shows that we do not have much to worry about death, even though death might not be what we like to think about, it is a great thing because we get to be with the Lord because he gave us eternal life <3

  6. Beth Lauder says:

    9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. 10It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.”
    Jesus is the “Light of the world.” If we walk by day that means that we are walking in fellowship with Him, believing and obeying His words. To walk by the night means to walk apart form Jesus, not in belief and obedience to Him, but in fellowship with the world. I am able to tell if I am walking in the light by reflecting on what my life looks like in regard to reading the Bible and obeying Jesus’ commands. It must be my aim daily to spend time in God’s Word and then go and DO what it says! I am thankful that Jesus tells me I will not stumble if I live a life of obedience to Him. It doesn’t mean that I won’t have trials, persecution or difficult circumstances, but it does mean that God will sustain me and guide me all the way through them.

  7. Chelseaaaaaaaaa says:

    23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

    Its amazing the power of God. Not only can he raise himself from the dead but also the average person. Its incredible and he chose us to be his hands and feet here on this planet.

  8. John 11:25: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;”

    The confidence I can have in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is amazing. Death will no longer have power over me. Jesus conquered the grave (death)! Through His power he rose again, and just as he did with Lazarus, he will do with me. For it is written: “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting”(1 Corinthians 15:55)?

    The resurrection of Jesus is the very foundation of my hope! If it did not happen, I am still dead in my sins, my hope is worthless, my faith is futile. If I can’t be confident that Jesus truthfully did rise after being dead for three days then I have no hope.

    I recently read a short book titled The Case for Easter. Through it I have been given greater confidence that assuredly Jesus did die, was buried, and rose on the third day. In fact their were over 500 witnesses!

    Hallelujah (praise the Lord)—I can trust with confidence that Jesus did rise from the dead and is now alive. And now, although I die, I shall live.

  9. Michelle says:

    9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light.
    10It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.”

    I echo beth on this one! There is absolutely no point to walk on our own and try to do things on our own without God…it leads to darkness- sin. I know that there have been times where i dont feel as close to God as i should and the feeling is not pleasant at all. I dont like the feeling far from God- it isnt worth the temporary satisfaction! And i need to remember that when i walk with the Lord, and when i glorify Him, I feel so great and i feel glad that i am obeying Him.

    which leads me to this verse…
    25.Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    when i walk in the light, i soo look forward to the Kingdom of Heaven!!its such a reassuring feeling!
    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!1

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    One of the most epic statements by Jesus. I’m gonna live forever if I stand firm. Jesus is very direct when he talks to people he asks them what if they believe what he says. It’s interesting

  11. Stacy Perkins says:

    Man, I don’t know about YOU guys, but I was sobbin’ like a baby reading about Jesus and all of these people’s weeping over the loss (though short-lived) of their beloved Lazarus. What a vivid account. And what a compassionate and loving man Jesus was…

    29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.

    Oh, that this would be OUR response to Jesus every minute of our lives. I was affected, too, by how her immediacy in getting up to go to Jesus prompted others’ curiosity. It isn’t JUST a test of our obedience in our response to Christ, but a way of evangelizing, TOO. EVERYthing we do is unto Him. EVERYTHING. May we be mindful that even getting up QUICKLY to get our parents a plate of food, or to do our chores, or ANYthing is a witness to our love and obedience to Jesus Christ. And our response may lead to others coming to know our Jesus, TOO. Praise God–He truly works ALL things together for the good of His people and for His glory.

  12. Max says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    Sound like the gospel in a nutshell, huh? So Jesus IS the resurrection (because He defeated death and rose from the grave), and He is the ONLY way to live your life. Whoever believes in Him will live, even though we will physically ddie here on earth, we’ll still be alive forever in Heaven with Him. And whoever belives and lives in Him will never spiritually die, we’ll never have to face eternal death and damnation in hell. That’s pretty much the gospel in a few sentances. Now, that shoudn’t be to hard to tell people! Let’s go tell people why Christmas is so important! (a.k.a this verses)

  13. Pastor Ben says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    This is such a huge moment in the gospel of John as Jesus performs his last and most amazing public miracle – raising Lazarus from the dead.

    Spence, I love the way you put it when you said, “The confidence I can have in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is amazing.” The joy and fearlessness we should have because of who Jesus is and what he has done is amazing!

    REMEMBER, NO TRUE NORTH THIS WEEKEND!

  14. Mike says:

    15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

    It is one thing to know in your head that God uses all situations for His good, and another to really believe it. When faced with difficult circumstances, it can be very easy to lose hope, or to feel overwhelmed. It isn’t always easy to see how God works through a situation; in fact, we may never really know exactly why something happens. But if I truly believe that God is in control and that everything works out for His glory, then no matter what happens I can have joy and peace at heart, trusting Him to take care of me.

  15. Cameron says:

    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    this is a crazy thing to think about! whoever believes in Christ may die physically, but we will never die spiritually. at the end of our physical life we are promised eternal fellowship with God in heaven! that is a very encouraging thought! Jesus asks “Do you believe this?” as Christians, we have embraced the truth of the gospel. the promises of Christ are what we put out hope in! but not only should we believe that whoever believes in Jesus Christ will never die, but we should be telling others about it! here Jesus tells us the cure for death! it is faith in Him! if we found the cure for cancer or AIDS, we would gladly tell it to everyone, because it can save lives (though only physical lives). as Christians, we have the TRUTH that can save from death, sin, and eternal punishment! so lets be bold in telling everyone the cure for our sin problem, Jesus Christ the LORD! i pray that i would boldly be proclaiming this gospel to everyone that i talk to! i need to be passionately sharing it with everyone! that is my call as a Christian! go tell it on the mountain! Jesus Christ is the Savior!

  16. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

    8″But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?”

    This automatically reminded me of what Paul actually did do just as Jesus did. after Paul was stoned he just walked right back into the town and started preaching again!!!! Jesus wasn’t afraid of the Jews and what could happen to Him because He knew that His time had not yet come for Him. God made clear the path that Jesus was to live and like Mr. Hosford said, He felt pain just as a human would..well because He was human…but also GOD! Jesus was the real deal and like it says in the passage, many believed and others didn’t, just as it is today. Bobby I will pray for 2010 that it’ll be a great year of revival buuut not just that, I’ll be praying for those that aren’t saved that they may see the light and no longer be blind, better yet, I’ll be prayin for Jesus to come back before 2010!!! :D MARANATHA!!!

  17. ♫ S†eƒƒen ♫ says:

    21″Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

    22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

    The people there were waiting eagerly for the arrival of Jesus. They knew Lazarus was severely sick and that he would pass away soon without help from Jesus. However they trusted in His power that if He was to arrive, He could save him from death. However, many people were probably angry with Jesus for not coming sooner. Martha says here to Jesus that if He would have been there earlier before Lazarus died, he would still be living. However, Martha declares her trust that God will give to Jesus what He asks for. While from the outside, the timing of Jesus seems terrible. He had stayed with his disciples where there were an additional two days after hearing of Lazarus being sick. And by the time He got to Bethany, Lazarus was dead. However, the timing was perfect, for in the end everything was used to glorify God. Jesus arrived after Lazarus had passed away so that He could show His power in raising him back to life. I need to never doubt God or His timing. I know that He has already perfectly planned out everything that will happen. I need to trust in His will and His timing. It’s like I’m a mouse in a maze only seeing the walls beside me, where God is above it all watching the overall picture. He can see what is truly the best way for things, and I need to always have full confidence in His faithfulness to do what He says He will do. His timing isn’t for me to be satisfied, but for Him to be glorified!

  18. trevorhosford says:

    God can truely do anything, he raises lazarous from the grave. many people claim to be able to heal sickness and make cripples better but God can raise people from the dead

    c u all soon

  19. 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    Oh I am so glad. Before I was dead in my sins but now I am made alive through Jesus Christ!!! The one who believes is alive spiritually even though they will die physically, we will live forever in fellowship with God. MARANATHA!!!

  20. Nachoooooo says:

    4When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

    I think that its amazing that God can use things that seem like tragidies and turn them into objects of bringing Him glory.

    51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,

    This verse is really interesting to me. How was this Pharasiee able to prophesy
    this?…

  21. Joy Talcott says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    John uses all of these “I am” statements to describe God throughout these chapters. “I am” the bread of life (6:35), “I am” the light of the world (8:12), “I am” the door of the sheep (10:7), “I am” the good shepherd (10:14), and now in this chapter “I am” the resurrection and the life (11:25). All of these metaphors display aspects of God and how He is the only way to salvation. Reading about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead gets me excited because the God we serve is the same God at work here. God does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17b). May I live my life in such a way that reflects my confidence in an all-powerful God.

  22. christopheriksen says:

    42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

    I was just thinking how cool it is that Jesus would do so much not only to die for us, but also to show us that He truly is the Son of God so that we would trust in Him and be saved. For instance, there is so much prophecy that Jesus fulfilled and then He did all these amazing miracles. I was also noticing how many times in the book of John people are giving personal confessions that Jesus is the Son of God like in verse 27. This just reminds me of John 20:30-31 which flat out says that John wrote the book so we would trust in Jesus as the Son of God. LORD, thank you so much for all that you have done so that we could have confidence that Jesus is God and that through Him we can have eternal life.

  23. It's Daniel Yo! says:

    53So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

    At my school, when we evangelize to the jewish kids there, they are completely stubborn in there minds. They say that the Romans were the ones who killed Jesus, not the Jews. I’ve never ben able o remember a specific verse off the top of my head, but basically i can now just show them all the verses we’ve been reading these past few days.

  24. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like verse 25,”Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;”

    I like this verse because JESUS is telling Martha who HE is. HE is saying that HE is the resurrection and that whoever believes in HIM will never die (HELL). When we believe in GOD it simply doesn’t mean that you know HE exists because even the demons know that because they saw HIM and that doesn’t mean they are going to HEAVEN. When you believe in GOD it means you repent and put you faith in HIM you don’t just go on living in sin even though you still will sin it won’t be as common and you will be ashamed of it. JESUS has given us the gift of eternal life all you have to do is repent and put you faith in HIM its totally worth sacrificing sin.

    CYA

  25. LG says:

    25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    This is a great verse. this verse is saying that I will never die and I will be able to live in heaven with my Lord and savior!!!

  26. Sarah G.! says:

    I loved reading about the Jewish culture back then!! They all showed such compassion towards one another after someone lost a loved one, and it’s amazing reading about Christ’s compassion for them as well. Even though many of the Jews were upset that He had not come sooner, Jesus still loved them!! I pray that God may show me how to show a compassion like Jesus’ to others today!! :D

  27. Jenna Perry says:

    4When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

    I think it is really cool to see how God works through people’s lives to touch other lives. In this verse, Jesus says he will perform this miracle of raising someone from the dead to show God’ great glory. God is so amazing and one of my favorite things to read in the Bible is Jesus performing miracles!

  28. jacksondahl says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
    27″Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

    Even though Martha is grieving for her brother and very sad that Jesus didn’t come sooner and heal him, she still keeps her trust in him completely. She knows that everything he does will turn for the best! I need to be like Martha is here whenever something seems to go wrong in my life. Even if it doesn’t go with MY plan for my life, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good thing. God knows what he is doing and I need to just keep my trust in him and let him control everything that happens to me without trying to fight it! It is useless to worry or stress, because God is in control, and no matter what I do, I know his master plan will end up happening anyway!

    PRAISE THE LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!!

  29. 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    Wow. Even though I die here on Earth, by believing in Jesus and living in accordance to His word I will live eternally with Him in Heaven. That’s wonderful news! I am truly thankful for this wonderful gift and sacrifice from God. It’s also amazing that Jesus was able to overcome death in the body! He was killed, but raised himself up from the dead. That is truly something to keep in mind as evidence that He is my Savior and that He is the Son of God.

  30. maddie nadeau :) says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

    He’s talking about repentance! this is so amazing and incredible. By Jesus’s sacrifice we live through death. By repenting in God and living only for Him we live eternally with Him, even though we don’t deserve anything. I pray to God that i will pray with Himm more and that i will stay in his word

  31. P.J. says:

    Jesus’ power is shown in this chapter when he resurrects Lazarus after days of being in the tomb. God’s power is infinite, and I need to fear that! I should be living in fear each day of any “spiritual spankings” that God may put on me and this fear of the Lord should drive me to be holy and to be in his Word every day and to keep God as the number one priority in my life by ridding myself of any idols! I love how there is no closing in the book of 1 John, John simply ends it with “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. jeff modugno 2010 says:

    40Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

    This is such a cool chapter because of what Jesus did to show that he is God. Also this verse shows me that I need to believe in God and trust him in all things. He is powerful and knows all things.

  33. Rebekah Foreman says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    I am dead in my sins but how awesome is it that when we die our body will be here but our soul and spirit will be with Christ in Heaven. !!!!

  34. Murphy Danahy says:

    33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

    34″Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

    35Jesus wept.

    36Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

    37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

    I love this verse because sometimes we come to see JESUS as almost inhuman and kind of unearthly, and he was just that, but here we see that he truly does care and he came to earth and was like us, and cares for us.

  35. Dan Lauder says:

    16Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

    I was struck by this response by Thomas. This demonstrates an “all in” mentality. It sounds like the disciples really felt like their life was in jeporady. Thomas was willing to follow Jesus wherever he lead. This is the kind of attitude I want to have.

  36. T moore says:

    8″But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?”

    This verse stuck out to me because it really shows how loving Jesus is because, as it says in the verses before this, Lazarus is sick, Jesus goes back to him in the same town that stoned Jesus. Jesus is so loving for this, I pray that I could have the same mentality of Jesus where I am forgiving and loving of others.

  37. Alison says:

    4When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

    Bad things happen so that God will get glory. No matter what the circumstance or trial, the point is that God will BE GLORIFIED! That’s a total encouragement to me because it means that I don’t have to worry about even the bad things in my life…because I know that it will end up EXACTLY how God wants it!

  38. Ryan Cox says:

    37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

    of course Christ COULD prevent Lazarus from dying, just as he could prevent ANYone from it…BUT what would God gain by simply preventing man from receiving the death that he deserves?! No, Christ’s miracles are always purposeful: they point to him & his Father’s glory. By allowing Lazarus to die (sadly enough), Jesus ups the ante by showing how difficult a true miracle is. Preventing illness–sure, a good show; raising someone from the dead, the floor is Christ’s, so to speak. God’s plan is always greater than man’s expectations!

  39. josh senger says:

    4When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

    I love how God gets the glory through everything. This reminds me to be strong in my trials because I know that God has a plan. No matter what happens He is in control and that is very comforting

  40. Wesley Wong says:

    A lot of concepts learned in this chapter!!
    One of them is staying around good company, and keep out of bad ones.

    John 11:9-10 “A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.”

    Even though Jesus wasn’t probably meaning this, I like to see at as this. If we walk by day, or walk in good company, it is going to be harder to fall in temptations. If we walk by night, or in bad company, it will be easier for me to fall into temptation. Just as Psalms 1 says, ” Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked.”

    God Bless!!

  41. Nicholas Bonetto says:

    10 “It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.”

    When darkness surrounds you, that is when you will fall. Sin comes all around you and you will stumble. It is impossile to not stumble in sin, its just common-sense. I cannot be a Christian yet walk in darkness. I can’t be a hypocrite, acting as if I am in light yet still walk in darkness. If I am pretending, I am still going to Hell. Putting on “shows” for church doesn’t impress God. I need to live it out every second of my life making a pattern of it.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  42. Katie Slusher says:

    9-10 man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.

    When walking in the light, you do not need to worry about stumbling because you can see where you are walking. If we follow with the Light of the World, we also need not worry about where we are walking because Christ is completely trustworthy. The awesome part is that Jesus Christ is more trustworthy than my own eyesight. Even if I don’t understand exactly where he is leading, I know that the way of the Lord is perfect.

  43. JWade says:

    25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    this is the amazing paradox of Christianity even though we die to ourselves we will live. it is hard for me to die to myself especialy right now for some reason. but i need to give up all i want and follow Him. i am in a weird situation because what i do i hate and what i love i dont do. i keep on fighting but i feel like its in vain, i feel like im beating myself up and making myself worthless. i need prayer. i need to pray.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Sara L. says:

    48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

    The Pharisees were much more concerned with preventing the Romans from coming and taking things away from them than they were about God’s will. On Christmas, in church, it sometimes seems that everyone was rejoicing when Christ was born and when He lived but upon reading Scripture, it wasn’t so! I sing because I rejoice but He was not welcomed into this world. Keeping this in mind helps me in difficult times because I’m trying to live more like Christ, and Christ was alienated here….so I really should be as well.

  45. zach v says:

    42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

    Just as the Father always hears the son (they are both God) the Son always hears us Christians. I was watching the movie Facing the Giants today and in the movie the main character is losing everything, but then He relies on God and God provides victory for him in everything He does. The main character would praise him in victory and in defeat. This is true for us as well. If we have the faith, anything is possible with God and God always hears us. Even if we are losing everything God hears us and will do His will. Even if we are trusting in God and we are “loosing” in life, God is still with us and it is in His plan for it to happen that way. This verse just encourages me by reminding me of God’s presence and that I should have faith that He always hears me and will lead me toward the best path.

  46. Emily Knudsen says:

    25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

    This verse stood out to me alot because as humans it may be hard for us to understand that if we truly believe in God and die then it is just the beginning of a new life that will last FOREVER! Its hard for me to even comprehened that i will be in eternal greatness with Jesus and it will never end! And that is another thing we can praise God for- For letting us live forever in greatness with him even though our bodies are dead. :)

  47. Katie Melrose says:

    yayyy computer finally works :)
    I love this chapter because its one of Jesus’s most miraculous works. It jsut blows my mind to think that He actually rose someone from the dead. I also found it interesting that He loved Lazarus very much but he let him doe so He could do a miraculous deed for them and to teach others a lesson. It just proves that God has everything in control. THis chapter also makes me joyful becasue i know that i will never die only me body will, but my soul will be with Jesus forever and who knows what he has in store for me :) MARANATHA!!!!!!

  48. Evan McKee on his iPod touch says:

    45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him.

    It’s amazing how many things God does to try to turn people to him. If Jesus was constantly evangelizing to people then it’s fairly obvious that we need to also. This is one of the ways I think God shows his love: by telling others about him, and we should evangelize like Him to show our love to the world.

  49. Allie Mooorefield(: says:

    25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
    What an amazing verse! Before i live, i must die. After we die in this life, it is only the beginning of a new life that includes spending eternity with the Lord our God. I used to be scared to die but now i look forward to it because i know that shortly after, i will be with the one i love! I am praising God every single day for giving me this opportunity to live with him forever (:
    praise the Lord
