The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
5:1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus Is Equal with God
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Witnesses to Jesus
30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true. 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” (ESV)

24″I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
wow! GREAT PASSAGE! i loved this verse because it showed me that by how God says if you listen to the great news and truly except it and except God then you will get the reward of eternal life! Which to me is mind blowing because it is FOREVER THERE WILL NEVER BE AN END TO JOY!
i REALLY like this passage.
6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
42but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
I liked verse 6 because it reminded me how I used to be like the crippled man and i was in the darkness and one day the Lord worked through me to make me well again and i became a daughter of my Father. I love verse 42 because it shows that i must have love for God. Not only should i have love for my God but love him directly and entirely from my heart<3
20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.
THis is a great verse! After all the miracles described in the bible and all the amazing, loving things he did for us……he will show me even greater things that will blow my away in Heaven! That is incredible and i cannot wait till that day! I will perfect like my Lord and with HIm for eternity!!! Sounds AMAZING right now <3
44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
This verse makes me think about whether my priorities are straight or not. I need to be striving to please the LORD in everything, and not man. Matters of this world are insignificant, but what God thinks of me is beyond important! I want to make sure that EVERYTHING I do is pleasing to the LORD, not pleasing to other people!
PRAISE THe LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!
Some pretty awesome stuff in this chapter of John! :D
8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
BOOYA! The power of the Lord is in Christ Jesus! And people still didn’t and don’t believe after what the LORD has done! Lets evangelize and spread His WORD so all may hear and know that Jesus is the ONE and ONLY way to HEAVEN!!! :D
John 5:16-23 stood out to me A LOT!
Jesus shows the Jews that Christ is going to obey and follow His Father, even on the Sabbath. God never sleeps on me or you. I feel guilty because I LOVE sleep and sometimes I feel as if I put sleep before God. Or I come up with excuses not to dive into His Word before I go to bed. Such as I am too busy. If I stayed up 15 minutes longer I could spend that time praying or driking in His Word. That’s nothing!
Jesus said in Mark 1:15 that the kingdom of God is near!(that was 2000 years ago) so the time is even nearer then ever before(I believe that sentence is gramatically incorrect, but thats not the point I am making :]) We(I) need to be ready for when the Lord returns and I want to be serving in His name when He returns! MARANATHA!!! May HIS name be praised to the ends of the earth!!! :D
***GLORY BE TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST!!!***
14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
This verse has always intrigued me.
44How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
This is a straight up priority check. Some of the Jews were angered at Jesus for healing a crippled man on the day of the Sabbath. They were mad at Jesus for “working” on the day of rest. They cared about the literal rules and were trying to trap Him so they could have a strong accusation against Him. They cared not about the result of a man for long crippled now able to walk. And while Jesus is talking to them, He says the above verse. He is telling them that they can’t possibly believe because the praise that they are in search of is from one another. He is telling them that they seek the praise of men, yet careless about the praise from God. I need to not care about what other men think about me. My only focus needs to be on God, that I am seeking His praise because I am living a life pleasing and glorifying to Him! And ultimately, it is not for the praise of me, but instead, it is all to praise God!
23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
This verse paints a very clear picture of the importance of Jesus being worshipped and honored on the same par as the Father. So many people think that Jesus was a good man, a wise prophet, but not God. If anyone does not give Jesus the same value as God Himself then he does not honor Him and he will not have eternal life. Verses like John 5:23 are crucial for us to know when we evangelize to others. Those of you who evangelize often know how common it is for people to give Jesus less status in their life than God. Those people are deceived about Jesus and must be taught that Jesus IS God! Without understanding and trusting that truth their is no faith in Jesus. If people believe in an inaccurate Jesus they do not believe in Jesus at all. I am going to get off SOTD now and write John 5:23 on an index card and memorize it. Having Scripture in my mind to refute false thinking about Jesus will help me in my evangelism and help point people toward truth!
17Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
18For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God
I know Jesus is the Son of God but i think we should all follow Jesus’ example and stand up for God.
I know many Jews at my school and I think it’s really sad knowing they aren’t going to Heaven because they just think of Jesus as a prophet. It’s interesting how the Jews follow some of the Bible but ignore the rest like this passage which clearly says he is the Son of God. I hope i will be bold and share the real message of who God is!
John 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
This is THE question for everyone to answer. Jesus asks it and it must be answered. But what about those people we know that NEVER get to hear it? Do we really care about them? Let’s all pray for God to move us to share the cure for the cancer that KILLS with those around us today and every day. It’s life or death – do we really believe and do we really care about others? If so, we are compelled to organize our lives around loving others and sharing the gospel. Do it and look out for the great blessings to come for others and ourselves!
ELLO… I read
I like verse 44,”How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?”
I like this verse because it tells us to seek GOD’s favor not mans. The praise of men is worthless because it will be forgotten and it only lasts for a short time. When GOD praises you it lasts forever and you are rewarded for it. Is it worth it to do something to be praised by men for a short time or to do something for GOD and be rewarded for eternity?
CYA
I love this chapter! Jesus totally owns the skeptics and tells them that if they claim to put their faith in the Scripture, then they would accept Jesus, because He is written about in the OT. Then he says this verse:
24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
This is awesome, and it basically sums up our religion. If I only accept and believe Jesus as my savior, then I won’t be condemned for my sins and I can enjoy eternal life. I just went from DEAD in my sin to ALIVE in Christ! That is so amazing! Thank you Lord for sending your Son so that I might spend eternity with you Lord, even though I don’t deserve it.
14 “Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or someting worse may happen to you.”
Jesus came and “healed” all of our wounds. The way we respond to this is giving our lives to Him and to stop our pattern of sin. If we don’t stop, our sin will lead to death. Jesus paid the price already, all we need to do is respond to it. I need to work on sharing the Gospel and being unashamed of my faith, I owe Jesus my life.
!!!MARANATHA!!!
8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
I love this because it totally shows the power of the Lord. This is so amazing to read about the may miracles that the Lord performs. What an amazing Lord!
44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
Nice post Steffen!!! This verse really is a heart check and evaluation. There are two teams, and you are either on God’s team, or the Devil’s. There is no middle-ground! God is the whole package and is my Savior! I need to be seeking of any way I can serve him, whether its by getting into the word, encouraging others, or praying continually and giving thanks! As a Christian, I know that I need to make the effort to grow closer to God by getting into the bible and gathering as much knowledge as I can! Nothing on earth matters except if you have repented of your sins and put your faith in Christ! In the end, that is the big question. I want to grow closer to the Lord through his word, clearly seeing my sin for what it is! God is so perfect that he deserves my best, and I need to be praising him forever!
39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
wow….the Jewish leaders missed the whole point of the Law and the Prophets. They figured if they knew scripture well enough and followed the law well enough they could be saved on their own account… the truth is that is not true….it is through Jesus we are saved alone…. I wonder if some of us at true north are so focused on biblical knowledge that we foreget what it really means to be a follower of Christ. I have been guilty of that myself. I have tried to focus on my knowledge of theological principles that in the long run carry little significance to our main mission here on earth. I pray that my focus in life is on Christ alone and serving him….I want to make deciples for his glory! I want to see God praised and worshiped! I long to see who he truly is….
John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
The defining action is belief here. I think belief has more to do with life than most people think. For example we are presented with an offer, an opportunity, a sense of knowledge, a promise, and based upon the trustworthiness of whatever is offered or whoever is offering it, we either say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
Based upon my own experiences, whatever I believe I do. Even though it is so simple…the reason I eat is because I Believe that food will satisfy my hunger (duhh). But of course I Believe that food will satisfy my hunger because I have tried food and know that it is fuel for my body.
In the same way we Believe or have faith in God. I believe God because 100% of the time He keeps his promises. I believe God because his fingerprint is evident in the creation. I believe God because I am guilty of sin and understand justice. The reason I believe God is because, in love he sent his Son to take my punishment. Never would I refuse to trust in God because the gift of mercy and eternal life are so great! I say ‘yes’ (I believe) to God’s promise because I know He will keep it.
44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
I like this verse becuase it reminds me that our sight should be focused on God. Our priorities should lie in the Lord. We should be working to impress the Lord, and to work for the praise of the Lord, not earthly people. We should not carewhat people here on earth think of us, as we are strangers in this world. We are greeted as such in 1 Peter 1:1. Heaven is our permanent home, with the Lord as our father, I should only be concerned with what he thinks of me. This becomes easier as a read the Bible. And by fellowshipping with Christians, and surrounding myself with the Lord’s people, this will become easier, as I will hav a support group.
46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
Oh my goodness…this still stands today with the jews!! They STILL are blinded to the prophecies written in the bible about the Christ, even though Jesus fulfilled them all, and Moses himself prophesied about him!! This just makes me sooo joyful knowing that God revealed the truth to me that I may be saved!! I’m going to pray for my jewish friend Victoria from school…that God may open her eyes to the truth. :D
24″I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
I like this verse because it makes me sooo thankful that I will have eternal life. It also makes me want to be a light and tell all about the gospel and that they do not need to be condemned they can be saved.
Goodmorning . . .
I read . . .
John 5 . . .woooooooooooooow, conviction big time.
“24. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.”
Without God in one’s life, one walks around like a zombie. Dead, without life. Not knowing where it’s going, could care less about life, and have a completely lifeless soul. However, if one HAS God in their life, they’re no longer zombies. But instead full of life, love God, and want to live for Him more than anything in the world. That’s what this verse is saying. Without God, we’re usless sinful human beings. But WITH Him, we’re useful humans that strive our best for perfection.
“19. Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”
This also is a verse that’s similar to the comment I said above. Without God we’re nothing. But this IS hard to convey to non-Christians. They think they’re good on their own and they don’t need ANYONES assistance. When in reality, their struggling in a violent sea, and God is their life guard. Reaching His hand out to save them.
“20. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.”
Example: HEAVENNNNNNNNNN! Boo Ya baby!
“43. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.”
That’s a “NO – NO!” Because God’s here, non-Christians should accept Him, turn their lives around, and become followers of Him. Not of some other people, or even idols, but of the God that made and created them.

~ When my friends ask me what I want for Christmas, I don’t NEED anything! I have the gift that my Father has given me, so what greater “gift” is there? Nothing. Absolutely NOTHING. All the material things of the world will perish and burn, so why be attachted to them? I shouldn’t be at all attachted. That’s why I don’t REALLY WANT SOMETHING FOR CHRISTMAS. I have my “GIFT” already.
Praise Jesus! Thank you Father. =) ~
i really liked this passage!
46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”
Real belief in something is accompanied by action. I heard an analogy about this a couple times and I think its really great: There’s this amazing daredevil, and he can walk back and forth across a tightrope over the Grand Canyon. EVERYONE is crowded around, totally amazed. You’re standing in the crowd watching when he takes out a wheelbarrow, and says “Who thinks I can push somebody in this across the Grand Canyon?” You and everyone else shout YES! Then he points to you and says “Get in.” Do you do it? Exactly. If you truly believed he could do it, you would get in. But just saying it isn’t enough. Real belief is proven by action. Faith is accompanied by deeds.
“Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
THis verse just shows the amazing glory that Jesus Christ has and how incredible he is. Also this shows the rewards of what happens when you listen and follow what he tells you.
10and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
11But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
I love this guy’s response to the Pharisees. To him Jesus is Lord. That means Jesus is the boss of his life and he does what he says over what anyone else says. He doesn’t care if he is looked down upon for not following the traditions (these were regulations the Pharisees added to the law not the actual law). Jesus told him to do something, so he did it. That is the kind of attitude I want to have. When Jesus tells me to do something, no need to think about it or analyze how others might respond to it, I just need to do it.
23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
Jesus is saying if you do not honor me, then you are not honoring the Father! Big statement from Jesus. Jesus also makes other big statements saying that he is going to be the one who judges, not the Father.
29and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
Can some explain this verse, it sounds like Jesus is talking about the ressurrection of the dead. They will hear God’s voice and they will rise. The problem or something that I see is that it sounds like Jesus is saying those who do good will rise and those who don’t will be judged. Is that really what Jesus is saying or what does he mean?
39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
Jesus I think is calling out the Pharisees. The Pharisees were rabbi’s and they diligently study Scripture. They think that by obeying Scripture they are saved. Jesus is saying that the Scriptures don’t testify to you being good, but it tells of my goodness to you.
I have not been on SOTD for eeevvvverrrr :( but I am So excited for True North this weekend!!!! :D
8For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
I’m in BSF(bible study fellowship) and this year we are studying John…this verse reminded me of what hypocrites the unbelieving Jews and Pharisees were. Throughout the book of John, they’re always telling Jesus how they’re descendants of Abraham, and they diligently study and pursue the Scriptures and yet, they do not believe in Jesus…???? If they truly understood the Scriptures, and studied them(which meant they studied life of moses who often spoke of savior), then they should not be rejecting Jesus! They called themselves people of God, then why are they rejecting the Son of God?? This made me kinda mad when i read this. But then it led me to thinking, I don’t always stand up for Jesus…I don’t always remember to pray daily, or worship Him, or live my life fully for Him….and yet I’m caught in His grace, mercy and love :) This is really off topic from where i started, but think about it. No matter how hard I fall, God’s always there to catch me because I have accepted Him, and the fact He sent His son Jesus, who died for ALL my sins yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He died for me being impatient with my brother, letting a curse slip out of my mouth in school, and trying to run my own life.
so…..the Pharisees were hypocrites, liars, and sadly misled people, I know people like them and I pray for strength and wisdom everyday so that I might help them come to know the true Bread of Life, Jesus Christ
THANK YOU LORD SOOO MUCH FOR YOUR AMAZING SAVING POWER, GRACE, MERCY AND LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. what happened to the 100+ comments?!?!?!
43I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
44How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
This verse is great for keeping my priorities straight. JESUS here is telling us that we should not focus on earthly praise, but on that of GOD. GOD’S praize is what we should desire, not man’s because GOD’S praise lasts forever.
Jesus performs yet another miracle shown to us in the beginning of this chapter; he heals a crippled man. Ironically, after he heals this crippled man, he later approaches him to say, “‘See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you’(14).”
We see a cycle going on in this crippled man’s life. Jesus heals him, a useless man with no hope or future giving him hope and a future. Then, Jesus warns the crippled man to not sin, or there will be punishment.
I can imagine me as the crippled man. I am dead in my sin. And because I fall short of the glory of God, I have no hope. Thankfully, Jesus Christ came to earth to die for my sins, giving me hope and an everlasting future.
Then, he warns me not to sin, or else “something worse” may happen to me. Sin can cause someone to stumble rapidly. One sin can lead to another, and that sin leads to another. Soon, people get so caught up with their sin, they lose focus of the hope that Christ has given us. And because they didn’t stop sinning, sin took over their life, they lose the hope and future Christ has given us.
I am thankful for the future and the hope Christ has given me, and I will express my thanks to God by keeping his commands.
God Bless!!
44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
I need to have eveyrthing be about God I believe but I need to make sure every part of my life is for God.
11But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” this is so amazing that jesus can just say pick up your mat and walk and the person will get up and walk. jesus just says the words and what ever he says will happen. we need to work on worshiping a God who can send his son as a child into the world he created to save them. that is like a person giving up his life to save the ant. that is what jesus did. so we need to thank him for what he did on the cross. i need to work on praising jesus in everything that i do.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
Sometimes after someone persecutes me I think about this and I am sad. One day these people who mock us will bow down to Christ and confess in His Lordship and they will know the truth, but it’ll be too late. I’m sad because they will go to hell and they don’t know it. Lord, let those who persecute me learn about you and become Christians. Let your words spoken through me, the Bible, and True North as a whole convict them and let them be saved; and also give us the courage to speak to them boldly. Amen.
44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
i love this verse! like Galatians 1:10, this verse says plainly that Christians dont live to please others, or to gain their praise. We spend so much more time worrying about what other people think, and trying to fit, when really we should be focused on God’s opinion. I need to make sure i am always doing things for God’s glory, and not just to please man.
17Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
Man, I have NO excuses. ALWAYS at His work. And His Holy Spirit does indeed give us strength to always be about His business…
24″I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
that is a great reminder of Gods salvation that He has offered us. i like how it says crossed over from life to death. it gives me this picture of being on one side of a line that has death fire and destruction, and being given the opportunity to cross over that line to eternal life and God all because of Gods grace for me
41″I do not accept praise from men,
Oh this is such a great verse! Praise from God is what counts :)!
44How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
We should not try obtain the praise of men because we are not living for them!!! The only one we should be striving to please and be praised from is God!! God is our #1 priority and we should be striving to please him 24/7.
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
18For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Later on in this passage Jesus tells the Pharisees that if they really believed Moses they would have believed Jesus. If they really knew their Old Testament they would have known that the Messiah would be God and that he would come as a suffering servant. But, instead, they believed what they wanted to believe and not what the Bible said was true. We so often do that today. We believe what we think to be true instead of what is actually true. I want to make sure that everything I believe comes straight from the Bible.
Oops…that was Meisha
8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
It’s awesome to serve a God and Savior that is worthy of our praise! Here’s in this passage Jesus displays his incredible power! By mere words, the lame man is healed. Jesus Christ deserves my love and devotion, I pray that I would daily remember to praise Him for who he is!
Kyle! Good question. The Bible teaches that everyone will be raised and have to stand before the Lord either to be sent to the final punishment – the Lake of Fire – or to the New Heavens and Earth. And our destiny will depend on whether we have done “good” or “evil.” Obviously this does not depend on our works, but whether the “good” of Christ has been applied to our account!
I hope this helps!
9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked…
Our God is an AWESOME God! Like many of you have said, all Christ had to do was say the word and it was so. There was no hesitation in the healing process, but instead just an awesome display of God’s power! Wow! God is truly all powerful and deserving of all praise.
17Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
What a great thing to know. God is ALWAYS at work. Sometimes it may seem like we’re all alone without a clue of what’s going on, but we need to remember, like this verse says, that God’s hand is constantly working. He has his reasons for why things happen the way that they do and I want to trust him and have faith that it’s all for his glory, and my own good. Thank you, Lord for your sovereignty !
24″I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
This verse stuck out to me because it is through God’s word that we are saved. God saves and by hearing the gospel and what Jesus has done. Just like hearing God’s word saves which is the most important thing, shouldn’t God’s word keep playing a huge part in my life? Not only hearing it and the gospel to save, but shouldn’t I also be diving into the word each day to hear more and more of God’s word because thats what I believed to be saved? It should be such a big part in my life that I am always thinking on God’s word and constantly craving it!
44How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?
there are so many people pleasers in the world. even many christians are people pleasers and do things they are supposed to do to please God to please other people. It is very important to keep the correct motive while performing God’s commands.
