John 2

The Wedding at Cana

2:1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

a mother’s intuition or the remembrance of the prophecies spoken to her about Jesus when the Angel addressed her in her youth?

  2. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 10,”And said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”"

I like this verse because it talks about JESUS’s wine being the best. When GOD does miracles they beg for a history. When GOD made Adam he wasn’t a kid but a full grown man along with Eve. When JESUS made the water into wine the wine tasted as if it had aged and the master of the banquet said it was the best better than the ones they had drunk earlier. When GOD works it is perfect.

17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

The disciples clearly realized that Jesus was not of this world. In Psalm 29:9, quoted above by the disciples, a psalm of David’s of sorrow, David is mocked and and humiliated merely because of his zeal for the Lord. The psalm says that even David’s friends left him and the people of the city considered his name a by-word. They hated David because he loved the Lord.

The same is with Jesus…they crucified him on the cross because they hated his name even though he had no fault. He endured great suffering for his zeal.

Keeping up our spiritual fire, and never lacking in zeal, could mean that we will suffer just a Jesus and David did. Lord, may may my zeal and love for you be greater than my fear of people. Will I still go out to wholeheartedly to serve you even if no one is by my side. As for me, I will watch and wait for the Lord…My God will hear me.

What great chapters! (I just read ch. 1 and 2). First, John clearly shows that he is of God, but not God Himself. He shows the people that Jesus is the Christ and immediately, John’s disciples follow Him. IMMEDIATELY. I wonder how long they had been following John around?? Honestly, they just leave their old life and go with Jesus. :) That’s how it is for me when I became a Christian, I left my old life and followed up with my new. How incredible it is to be saved! Then in chapter two, Jesus starts to gather up His disciples and He shows them the first miracle that brings them faith. Water into wine…how awesome! Although some believe and know, like the disciples, John, and us, others do not(like the pharisees, chief priests, and people today). I pray that many will come to the Aliso campus lunch so that others may here what Christmas is all about annnd repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ just as the disciples and John did! :)

14 “In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

I read this and my first thought was, “What would possess their mind to make such a holy place and turn it into, basicslly, a thieves house.” But I’m guilty of the same thing. Everytime I go to church with a hypocritical heart, I’m doing the same thing as they are. Everytime I fake worship, I do what they did. Everytime I go to church just to hang around with friends and couldn’t care less about the message, I’m at the same level as they are. I need to work on checking my heart and making sure that I’m at church for the right reason. God deserves the best of me.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  6. Stacy Perkins says:

I marvel over how Jesus reveals Himself to people in different nuances. Matthew’s Gospel has such a different tone than John’s, and I love it. Both reveal Jesus and the power, majesty, and purpose that He is, but are from different perspectives. It is so incredible to consider how, with all the people ever created, and as uniquely and personally as the Lord reveals Himself to each of us in accordance with Scripture, we STILL don’t have a full grasp on Jesus and all that He is. What a testimony to how HUGE He really IS. This is MY God! This is YOUR God. This is the One, Who went ahead each of us and outlined our personal path, and Who has gone ahead of His believers to heaven, to prepare our place for us, if we do so believe in Him. The One Who will wipe away our tears of sadness. The One Who STILL, in His glorified state, bears the scars of the wounds He endured for the sake of those He LOVES.

May my response to such a powerful, intricate, but personal God NEVER be, “But I’m too TIRED,” or, “Lemme just finish this show on TV,” or, “But I have so much WORK to do.” May my response instead be one where I will drop EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY for Him and the work HE has called me to do for HIS sake. May I always be mindful of the fact that my life is HIS, and NOT my own.

  7. Josh Hackett says:

11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

The God we worship is so powerful this is but a mere glimpse of what He is capable we need to worship I need to worship Him how he deserves with every bit of energy I have!

  8. Beth Lauder says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

Have you ever wondered why miracles like this do not happen still today? I wondered that when I was a new Christian. The first miracle Jesus performed, turning water into wine, attested to Jesus’ identity as Messiah and Son of God and lead unbelievers to faith. Notice how the end of verse 11 says, “and His disciples believed in Him.” My ESV study Bible says this miracle “showed the glory of Jesus as the sovereign Creator and ruler of the material universe and also as the merciful God who provides abundantly for His people’s needs.” We do not have miracles like this still today because Jesus has already proven Himself as the Messiah and Lord of lords. I like how John explains why Jesus does miracles and how the miracles helped to prove who He was and develop the disciples’ faith in Him.

  9. payton :D says:

25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

Jesus knew and that is why His Father sent Him. Jesus came to die for man’s sins. I am sinful and need to STOP sinning. CHrist lived a perfect life and I need to be a Christ follower. Praise the LORD in heaven for sending His Son down to die for you and me! :D
Where did everyone go??? Matthew started out with over 100 comments and then went down for awhile and then finished with a little over 90. Then John started and we only had 70. True North lets see if we can reach over 150!!! for the whole book of John! :]

    ***KEEP STANDING FOR CHRIST!!!***

  10. Melissa Cox says:

18Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

The Jews demanded a “sign” from Jesus to prove His authority. He did so many miracles during His ministry. Jesus also DID end up raising His body after three days. None of this made any difference to the vast majority of Jews back then and most people still don’t care about all of those miracles today. Jesus did prove his authority…in so many ways. People today say, “Why can’t God just let everyone into Heaven if He’s so loving?” The truth is God provided Christ because of His love. If we pay attention and read His word, we can find out how to be saved through Christ!

  11. Sarah Schaller says:

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

This verse stood out to me because it was a previous forshadowing and the disciples knew it. It makes me wonder how many verses in the Bible are really forshadowings of events yet to come.

  12. Ryan Cox says:

    They did so,

9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

I love the miracles of Jesus! I have trouble when people question things like how God can create a universe that looks like it’s been around for thousands (millions? don’t think so!) of years. Adam & Eve were created as whole, MATURE beings; Jesus heals people who have had withered arms & sunken-in eye-sockets; Jesus turns water into GOOD (wine that has been aged for many years) wine in a matter of minutes! Why can’t the same God of the universe create a world (rocks, etc..) with the appearance of age (& what does a “new” rock look like?). Sorry for the creationism diatribe; it’s just that this miracle says so much more than the magician-status that many skeptics concede to our Lord & Savior.

  13. Haley Kool says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

This first miracle is so important! Not only does Jesus save the wedding, he displayed his awesome power! This also allows the disciples to put thier faith in him because they know that he truly is the Lord.

  14. Jeff Modugno 2010 says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

I am thanking God that he did this for me. It is so cool to think that Jesus could come and die and raise again for me a sinner. I need to rember this christmas the good news and tell others so more can be saved. Thank you Jesus for what you did for me.

  15. Angela says:

25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

    Payton, you said,
“Jesus knew and that is why His Father sent Him. Jesus came to die for man’s sins. I am sinful and need to STOP sinning. CHrist lived a perfect life and I need to be a Christ follower. Praise the LORD in heaven for sending His Son down to die for you and me!”

I totally agree with you about Jesus dying for us. It is truly awesome and shows His deep LOVE for us. But I also want to encourage you that NO MATTER how hard you or I may try, we will always be sinners and that Jesus loves us anyway. We can’t stop sinning because it is our nature. But we can ALWAYS try to be better and sin less egregiously and often.

  16. Angela says:

4″Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied, “My time has not yet come.”

    Question:
If His time had yet to come, why did He perform the miracle anyway? I don’t get it…

  17. Pastor Ben says:

    Angela, great question!

When Jesus says “My time has not yet come,” he is referring to the end of his earthly life (crucifixion, resurrection, glorification.) While Jesus did the miracle anyway, it was a “quiet” one. The only people who really knew about it were his disciples and the servants who had drawn the water (vs. 9). At this early point in his ministry, Jesus did not want too much attention because his time had not yet come.

  18. Elise says:

18Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”
19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
20The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”
21But the temple he had spoken of was his body.

Jesus has the authority to raise dead people (including himself) to life! This PROVES he is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! He even has the ability to raise a dead spirit to life in Him! I am so thankful that we have a powerful God like this who can and has raised my dead spirit and credited it with righteousness!

  19. Dan Lauder says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

God has the power to do the impossible. To create something out of nothing in an instant. It is possible to make water turn into wine but it takes a long time. You need grapes, bacteria, fermentation, time, etc. Wine is remarkably complex in structure. Especially good wine. However, in an instant Jesus turned water into wine that tasted like it had been aged for years. God can create things instantaneously with the appearance of age. This is a useful principle when talking about Creation and Evolution. One argument evolutionists have is that rocks can be radioactively dated to be billions of years old. Thus they laugh at anyone who believes in a literal reading of Genesis and who thinks the world is only thousands of years old. However, the rocks could have easily been made in the same way as the wine, instanteously but with the appearance of age.

  20. KJ, one blood says:

25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

It brings me up of this idea of santa claus, the myth of santa claus is that he knows if people are good or bad. Jesus actually knew what type of people they are. Jesus knows if they’ve been a good person or a bad person. Jesus knew if they were possessed by demons or not. He didn’t need to hear someone talk about that person or have that person explain themself because Jesus knew all about them.

  21. it's Daniel Yo! says:

4″Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied, “My time has not yet come.”

I don’t get this…why does Jesus say His time has not come when he right away goes and performs His first miracle?

  22. Jacob U. says:

8Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,
9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

I like these verses because it shows Christ’s power overe everything. I also like this because it was sending a message to the people of that time because, at that time, some peole worshiped a god that was said to “turn water into wine” and by doing as Jesus did, He showed that He is the true God and that He has power not the false god’s

  23. Allen McAnlis says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

The disciples put their faith in Him after seeing the miracles He performed. We do not have Jesus in the flesh today but His miracles are still all around us. The fact that we wake up everyday is a miracle in itself. We should always have faith in God and trust in Him that He has a path set for us. We need to be bold in preaching His word. If you have had your campus lunch you know that in recieving good news, you should spread it to those around you.

  24. LG says:

Everytime I think and read about the miracles Jesus preformed I am just amazed!!!! I wish I could have been there!!! Jesus did soooooooooooo many miracles and yet people did not believe who he was.

  25. Pastor Ben says:

Daniel yo! Check back to comment 17 for the answer to your question.

I just posted some thoughts about reading through the Book of Matthew on my blog. Click on my name to check it out.

The main thing I am still thinking about from Matthew is that looking at the life of Christ THEN should strengthen my faith NOW. We see that same principle in this chapter. In verse 11 and 22 it talks about the disciples putting their faith in Christ. As we read through John, may our faith be strengthened as well!

  26. Murphy Danahy says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
20The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”
21But the temple he had spoken of was his body.
22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

I love this verse. JESUS is, of course, referring to his body but no one understands him. It actually would take more power to raise his body from the dead than to rebuild the temple in three days. The Jews didn’t believe JESUS could raise the temple… and then he goes and one ups them.

  27. angela voris says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

Jesus’s glory is all around us every day. With that first miracle he revealed his glory and his glory still goes on and on We might not have seen Him in person but, we sure have read about his glory in the bible. i just thank him for what he has done and all of his glory.

  28. 11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

This just goes to show you how amazing god really is with all of his incredible miracles:) but also i would never want to be one of those people who were selling stuff in the Jesus wrath ohhh yeah wud not be fun

  29. jacksondahl says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

This turning water into wine is just the very first of all the miracles Jesus performs. Even his simple miracles (as opposed to his resurrection) are still mind boggling and incredible. This makes me realize that although the issues I face seem difficult to me and I worry about them, the are absolutely nothing to him. I need to continue to improve my trust in the LORD that he has got everything under control and that I shouldn’t be worrying or stressing about anything. I am getting better, and am seeing all the amazing things God does for me, as well as that he sometimes allows me to suffer, either to learn something or to be persecuted in his name; however I still need to keep working on keeping my trust fully in God and letting his course for my life be my course for my life!

    PRAISE THE LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!!

  30. Wesley Wong says:

Jesus gets pretty upset when people use the temple as a market place. He gets angry at the people who are causing the temple to be a marketplace. In the same way, when someone sins, I need to be angry at things that would make God angry, which is sin.

  31. Mike says:

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

Jesus knew how much suffering lay ahead of Him, but he was unwavering in His commitment. Because of His great and unmerited love for us, He was willing to put aside the glory that was His in Heaven and come to earth, to live as a man and suffer as a man, for the purpose of being put to death in the most brutal way imaginable. Jesus’ life provides us with a clear picture of what true submission is. He obeyed the will of the Father even to the point of becoming human and dying on a cross. As Christians, who by definition are desiring to be made more like Christ, we need to model this submission to God’s will. Living to serve and glorify God means that we will face hardships and persecutions, and that there will be sacrifice and a constant battle against everything within us that desires to live in sin. Sometimes it requires doing things that we would never under ordinary circumstances consider doing. But I need to be resolved to not let anything get in the way of my desire and commitment to be obedient to God, even in the times when it is hard. This means not compromising in any way in my faith, but striving daily to be made more sanctified and like Christ.

  32. Eric Walker reppin Romans 1:16!! says:

9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

This is sooo awesome. Jesus turns water into wine!! That is such a legit miracle that only the son of man could do, take that evolutionist! I pray that we all would realize how powerful and mighty our God is and we would praise his name for it!!!

  33. Zach V says:

11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

I would really love to see a miracle like this; but as much as I would love to see this miracle I would rather (a thousand times more) see Jesus in his full glory in heaven. Verses like these remind me of God’s power and that we should fear Him because He is coming back to the world to destroy it and only His followers will be taken back to heaven. lord, let me always fear you and because of your glory let me do works to please you. Amen.

  34. Max says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

Jesus isn’t talking about the building, He’s talking about Himself! It’s so cool how Jesus reffers to Himself as the Temple, because back then the Temple was where God resided. And now God is with us, (that’s what Emanuel means, right?) and like the temple, Jesus is God dwelling with us. It just blows my mind to think that God, who is the Creator of everything, would become a lowly little human. And then since He is God, He rose from the dead in 3 days. No one but Jesus can do that!

  35. Jenna Perry says:

9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

I think this is such an awesome miracle Jesus performed!! It so cool to see that Jesus works through God in Heaven. I don’t know how anyone could believe in such theories as evolution when we read a verse like this; we should believe God can do that! I pray that i would stand strong in my faith and remember how good and mighty God is when i am taught everyday there is no such thing as a Creator!

  36. Boyd Jorden says:

21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.
22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

Amen to Pastor Ben’s comment. I too pray that reading John will strengthen our faith. Though Jesus’ prophecy about His death and resurrection was not understood in that moment, God’s amazing plan later became clear to the disciples. Even though I might not always fully understand God’s commands, I pray that I will have child-like faith and trust in the Lord. God does have a plan and one day it will reach completion and all will be made clear to us. Let His kingdom come! Maranatha!

  37. kelly causky says:

24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men.
25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

God knows Truth. That is why it is an amazing thing to have our complete faith and trust in him. He is in control; he knows everything. Though we try to figure out so much stuff and think we are wise, we have and know nothing compared to Jesus Christ, the Creator of the Universe. Thank you God for having me on your team.

  38. Josh Larson says:

5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” this is truly amazing to do what ever some one said. that what christ wants us to do as Christians. to do what ever he wants. if he wants us to share the gospel with our school we need to do it if he wants us to move to india to spread the word we need to be willing to do it and to do it with a good heart and a right attitude. i need to work on reading the bible more as christ commanded and to work on spreading the word out into all the nations starting with san clemente high school.

  39. Austin Jones [reppin' TRUE NORTH] says:

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

Sometimes I forget about how significant death is. It seems like with all of the violent videogames and dramatic tv shows we grow numb to death. Its not until it directly affects us in the form of a lost loved one or a friend that we take it seriously. I need to have a profound respect and thankfulness towards God’s gift to us. Jesus death wasn’t just another death, it was THE death. The death that saved me and gave me an oppurtunity to have a relationship with God the Father. The resurrection just sweetens the deal by confirming our knowledge that Jesus is LORD. It was the one thing that had to happen in order to prove he was the Messiah, and sure enough it happened flawlessly. Let’s be thankful this Christmas and celebrate the good news of God’s gift. Sharing the gospel is one way I’m going to share God’s gift with the people around me.

  40. Sarah G.! says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

YES TO JESUS BE THE GLORY!! The first of many miraculous signs came from this simple one, but the most important miracle was in Christ’s resurrection!! Of course, there are still many who do not believe that Jesus is the Lord, even with that miracle, BUT God’s children know who Jesus is!! Praise be to the Lord Jesus Christ, and may we spread His name more and more over the last few days of school this year!! :D

  41. Alyssa K says:

25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

I am so thankful that Jesus knows everything and that I do not need to worry about him understanding, because he understands everything. He is all-knowing and all-powerful. And as I should give him the glory in all I do and tell people about the real good news this Christmas–Jesus Christ was born into this world to save us from our sins and that he lives! :)

  42. Summer Staeb says:

14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

Just as these men were guilty of making God’s temple a marketplace, I am guilty of going to God’s holy place with the wrong motives. Church can definitely be a fun social event, but that is definitely not the main reason for going. Going to church should be because I want to worship my God through song and learn about his Word so I can grow in my relationship with him. I do not want to have an impure heart before God when I go to worship him! I’m praying that I would make sure my motives for going to church are in the right place and gloryfying to God and that he would conivict my heart if they are not.

  43. Meisha Preston says:

16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

This is the kind of zeal I need to have for God and his Word. God is holy. I should be offended and angry when people trample on the holiness of God. I should also apply this zeal to my life and eradicate the sin in my own life.

  44. Rachel McKee says:

3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4″Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied, “My time has not yet come.”

5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

These verses are sort of funny to me. Mary knows that Jesus can do all things, and this is why she tells him the wine is gone (she wants him to do something about it because she feels bad for the bride and bridegroom of the wedding). Jesus points out that he can tell she is asking him to perform a miracle, and he says God has not told him to act yet. But, Mary knows that Jesus will end up doing something because she knows his love is too much to let the new couple suffer an embarrassment. That is why she makes sure to notify the servants to do what Jesus tells them, and, sure enough, in the end Jesus performs a miracle and turns water to wine.

  45. P.J. says:

“So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, ‘Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!’”

This needs to be my attitude towards following Christ and killing sin in my life! Jesus displayed his righteous anger here in a way that was scandalous to the teachers of the law at that time. I need to be angry at sin in my own life, and hate the sin that is in others and help them to fight it as well. I want this to be my mindset: that at every inclination, I would seek to destroy it using God’s Word and instead turn to wisdom rather than folly!

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. Emily Knudsen says:

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Though this verse is short it stood out to me the most because it really cuts down to the point that no matter how crazy or scary something is if God wants you to do it; do it. Because God has already planned out our lives and even if something does`nt go your way; but Gods way, you will end up being rewarded! And just know that Gods way=the right way! :)

  47. Haley Litz says:

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

I like this verse because of what it says in the beginning of it: his disciples remembered that it is written… The disciples remembered the words out of the old testament and they didn’t even have their own personal old testaments to carry around.. They had to have heard that taught and then memorized it. That is how I need to be with God’s Word. I need to be so passionate about his word that I memorize it! It is God’s Word so why shouldn’t I memorize it??!!

  48. lauren taylor goudge :) says:

    CHRISTmas is coming!!
16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”—This verse really reminded me that I need to be making sure that I am going to church and all of these True North events with heart and a mind set to glorify the LORD and to learn more about Him that will benefit me and my faith! Even though the people at Compass are so amazing and great to be around, I need to be checking my heart and making sure that I keep going back for the teaching and that I can apply everything to my life. Thinking back on it, I have grown so so much from Compass Bible Church and I am so glad that the LORD has chosen me out of my family and the teaching there is great and has helped me so much! I do think that I am going back to learn more thanks to Pastor Bobby and everyone else because they teach the truth and it makes me think. It has also shown a major change in my life. So thankful for CBC!!
    MARANATHA!!!

encourage everyone to be thinking about what Christ has done for us during this Christmas!! :)

  49. Brooke Miller says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

I want to echo Beth Lauder on this! I also think its amazing how Jesus performed so many miracles, he is so awesome and perfect! If Jesus’ miracles do not prove anything, then I do not know what does. The Lord’s creation is absolutely beautiful and everything he does brings him glory and I need to be pleasing him and bringing him glory as well!

  50. Mark says:

This chapter is such an amazing example of how powerful our God is. In the verses when Jesus goes into the temple and sees what the people are doing to his father’s house, Jesus is crushed that that is happening!!! Many people look at these verses and convict Jesus of committing a sin because he got angry but Jesus can committ no such sin!!!! Just imagine how you would feel if someone came into your family’s house and started destroying it!!!! You would feel rage!!!!! Jesus did not feel rage!!!! He was acting in that way because of how schocked the temple of God was being mocked and wanted to get rid of everything as soon as he could!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. Katie Melrose says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
-I just wanted to make a comment and say that i really wish i could see his full glory, someday…someday :)
16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”
-Overall this chapter really made me question: Do i truley get upset and mad when people sin against God or put him down in fgront of me? What i sometimes fail to realize is that when people who sin agianst God this is a serious thing. Especially hearing cursing all the time i start ti stop correcting everyone because it becomes normal hearing but i need to start stopping people and letting them know that i am truley upset when they take my Lord’s name in vain. Haha, now that im talking about this im actually becoming upset and realizing all the people i see at school everday who always take the Lords name in vain…just wait until tomorrow, I have something coming for them.

  52. Katie Slusher says:

16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

Jesus Christ was shocked by the sinfulness that occured in the temple and quickly acted to remove it. I need to have the same attitude toward my sinful desires. If I am aware of sin in my life, I need to act quickly and fight the hold it has on me. I want to strive for holiness like Jesus!

  53. [DB] Derek Brower 2010 says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

So deep and mysterious! They have no idea that the Lord is talking about himself and its awesome! He will rise in 3 days!!! Praise the Lord!

  54. Ian H. says:

15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

Jesus really did have zeal for God’s Temple. Sadly, the people had basically turned it into a market. How weird would it be if we changed Compass Bible Church into a shopping center? That essentially (it seems) is what they had done to the Temple. And Jesus was not happy about it; not one bit! The “house” of God should be for praising Him, not exchanging money or selling things.
Just like Jesus had zeal for the Temple, I want to have zeal for justice/righteousness. Not ego-inflating self-righteousness or pride in my own goodness, but rather a humble and honest obedience to God. I want to take His Word and sin (whether it be mine, or that of those around me) seriously. God, please give me humility yet zeal for you, your Word the Bible, and sin, especially over this break when it is so easy to lose my focus on You and be distracted with lesser things.

  55. Luke Melrose- Serious Senior for Christ says:

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.

Jesus is not talking about the acctual temple (His fathers house). He is talking about his own body…when He was crucified on the cross and raised from the dead three day later. He said this would happen, and it did! Jesus knew why He was on earth. He came to be the savior of the world!!

  56. Never Take David Personal says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

mmm Biblical foreshadowing!!!!!! ha who said that the Bible can’t be read in a modern way. take that post modernism……

This is just more proof that Jesus knew what he was getting himself into. This gives me more confidence in his truth….

  57. Alicia Karlsson says:

24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men.
25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

When I read this verse I just had to pause. Jesus knew all men. That means he knew there heart he could see past all the glitz and glamour to the motive of a mans heart. He knew that the only reason many were following him was because of the great miracles he was doing. He did not trust the people because he knew there hearts were wrong. How heart breaking that must have been for Jesus. Because as the book of Jeremiah says “The heart is sick and deceitful above all else who can know it” Numerous times through out the gospels it talks about Jesus knowing what a person was thinking. He could see what his disciples were thinking, the pharisees, and many others he could see it all because he was God. He did not rely on men for anything but only on his Father in heaven. There was never a time that Jesus doubted or became worried about what men thought. He was all knowing and all seeing.
Today we have the holy spirit who doesn’t have to look into our heart but he dwells in us so he knows every thought before we even think it. Every impure motive every sinful desires he see and knows. We can not hide anything from God. Sometimes I think because I haven’t said it or acted on it that its not there. But that is such a lie our thoughts can be as sinful as our actions. If its not of God then it is sin. I pray that my thoughts would be filled with godliness and less sinfulness. And that when Jesus looks into me he will see a pure heart wanting to please him and honor him with my life.

  58. Zach senger says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

This is so legit!! Jesus is showing his amazingness right here!!!! He predictts His own resurection from the dead!!! That just blows my mind and what He said totally happens!! He truly does get raised on the third day!!!

  59. christopheriksen says:

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Jesus had such concern for God’s glory and honor that He drove everyone out of the temple because they were disgracing it. Of course He was God, but we as His followers should have the same zeal for God’s glory. Do I get mad when people use God’s name in vain and ignore His law by sinning, or do I just not really care about what other people are doing? I should be offended and take it personally when people sin against my God, but I know that a lot of times I just ignore what other people do because they are non-Christians. LORD, please give me a deeper zeal for your glory. Please help me to be offended when people sin around me because I know it offends you. Please help me also to then spread your gospel to them everywhere I go so that they would glorify you rather than dishonor you.

  60. Jasmine Douglas says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

I was just talking to Vanessa about how cool it would have been to live back then when Jesus walked on the earth! I couldn’t even imagine talking to him face to face! But then I thought about it, and I am so thankful for God sovereignly creating me when he did, because i am blessed with the bible! I’ve learned so much from it and now I long for the day to see our King and praise him for eternity!! Until then, I want to share his good news with everyone in my life!

  61. j. watkins says:

“In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.”

If God was this angry seeing these things happen, imagine how angry he must be when he comes across sin! I’m glad that I won’t have to face that fiery wrath!

“After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.”

This doesn’t make sense… they sure seemed to believe he was God! maybe this was more of a way of saying their faith was confirmed.

  62. josh senger says:

i like the part of this chapter talking about when Jesus turned the water into wine. it makes me think about a christian life. when we first become christians we are so simple and lowly, but as we mature in Christ we learn more about Him, and eventually we will be made into His glory and be shining in heaven to glorify Him in all we do. i cant wait til that day. maranatha

  63. ♫ S†eƒƒen ♫ says:

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Jesus has just gone into the temple of Jerusalem to find it being made into a mockery. People are inside the temple selling cattle and sheep and turtle doves and other barnyard animals. In addition to the livestock, there’s people exchanging money at tables. Furious, Jesus turns the tables over and makes a whip out of cords, driving out the animals and the people. This verse is in response to that, as His disciples remember the Old Testament verse. Jesus is consumed with zeal for the house of God as He drives the people and livestock out of the temple. He is infuriated because He knows the purpose for which the temple was made. The temple was a place to come and worship God. Yet these people had come in and defiled the place entirely. Jesus was not alright with this, making a stand for what is right and driving out the evil. With Christianity today, there are many people out in the world defiling it. They put it down, persecute its followers, or claim to be Christians but are really just hypocrites. People aren’t afraid to make a bold stand against it. Yet so sadly, many who may call themselves Christian will not have the courage to stand up for the truth. I need to be consumed with zeal for the house of God. When I see the name of my God being defiled, I need to stand up. I can’t just sit back and watch, doing nothing out of fear. I need to be bold and courageous in standing up for the truth! I need to be on fire for Christ, that He is the only thing that matters to me. The thoughts of other people need to be brushed aside as I strive to not stop standing for the truth through the power of Christ!

  64. Sara L. says:

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
20The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”
21But the temple he had spoken of was his body.

So…I feel really dumb right now because I didn’t get this until just now. In Matthew it mentions that a couple of times (rebuilding the temple in 3 days) and not once did I make the connection that this is what He was talking about. I’m so glad that I read SOTD today because I would have missed out on that!. Just as I didn’t understand at first, the Jews didn’t. Verse 20 clearly shows that they were thinking exactly what I was thinking. But I know better now :) ….this is the biggest, most powerful sign that *should* be convincing enough for *everyone*….yet hardly anyone believes that it is true. But I digress….

As a Christian, *my* body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Every day I need to be striving to live like Christ!

  65. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”
17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Jesus got really upset when he saw that men were desecrating the house of God. I need to get mad and energized like this when someone insults my God or does things that are displeasing to God. This is a sign that I am truly devoted to what God says and commands.

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

It’s so amazing the miracles that Jesus performed, but the most incredible one was his resurrection. A man that many people criticized and doubted could not be held down even by death! That is so incredible to me and it makes me happy that Jesus could die for my sins and at the same time regain his throne in Heaven after resurrecting.

  66. John Karlsson says:

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.

The only reason the disciples remembered Scripture is because they saw Jesus live it before there very eyes. As Christians when we share the gospel with out friends and family it is so important that our lives back up what we are preaching. Jesus had a passion for the things of God and that passion was recognized by all who came into contact with Jesus What about your life, do the people you see everyday even know you are Christian? if we all had the zeal that Jesus Christ displayed, then a revival would be breaking out for sure. Lord I pray that the fear of man in my life would be replaced with a zeal for you.

  67. Dan Blankenship says:

    John 2

22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

This verse is so telling as to the spiritual maturity of His disciples. Christ’s disciples even after all they had seen and heard still lacked spiritual maturity and knowledge. As it was with the disciples so it is for the new Christian. It takes time to gain knowledge and understanding from God thru sanctification to become a strong and mature believer in Christ. Our faith must be tested and proved genuine thru trials that will strengthen us so we can stand firm. Unlike the disciples we have God’s Word to guide us in knowledge and understanding. Jesus’ disciples received their knowledge and understanding from seeing and listening. With the Word of God at our fingertips we have a distinct advantage over the disciples that they would have been envious of. If we are to become tools worthy of Gods hand we need to be in His Word daily gaining the knowledge and understanding that only comes from God and his Word.

Luke 24:45-46 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

  68. Allie Mooorefield (sorry i commented so late..had a show and homework) says:

10and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

I dont know if this relates to what im thinking but i thought about how we must offer the best for the Lord. Like it says in this verse everyone brings out the best choice of wine and then later on the cheaper wine. I feel like i must be like this with the Lord and give him 200% all the time and offer HIm the best of the best. I want to praise him but when i am praising him i must do it with ALL of my heart and serve him the best praise. He is deserving of it and that is my goal. To offer everything up for the Lord and offer Him not only something, but the best kind! Whether it be praise, worship, love, etc. I must give the Lord everything and serve him with all my heart. I cannot be halfway..i must either be on Gods team or Satans team……..I DEFINITELY CHOOSE GODS TEAM! woohoo i cant wait till heaven! If only I could go to Heaven this very minute!!!!!!
    Praise the Lord <3

  69. Rebekah Foreman ON FIRE FOR CHRIST says:

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

If we all share what God has done hopefully people will turn to God like they did here in this verse. Jesus is so powerful that by the sight of Him and what He did made people turn to Him and accept Him into Christ
