John 1

The Word Became Flesh

1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” (ESV)

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

The first thing that comes to my mind when reading this verse is NOTW. As Christians we should hate this world and only be looking forward to Heaven. Heaven is far more greater than we could ever imagine!!! We are in this world, but we are not of it. The world decides to ignore that fact that God created us and the world. The thoughts in our mind should be of spiritual things and not worldy things!!! All Christians still fall into some temptations of the world and our mindset isn’t focused on Heavenly and Spiritual thoughts. Lets start to live like we are servants of Jesus Christ and all we want to do is obey his commandments! MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

2He was with God in the beginning.

4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

I think that these are my most favorite verses in the book of John. It shows that Jesus was not just here when he was a man, but also in the beginning with creation and his father. Through him all things were made, nothing can exist without him, we are all on the life support of Jesus. And the last verse is cool too. The darkness does not understand the light, craziness.

  3. payton :D says:

    Wow! Awesome stuff in John!

20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Christ.”

John the Baptist was a smart guy. He knew were he stood. He had people follow him and call him Christ but he denied it and still fullfilled the Lord’s will by proclaiming Jesus Christ. What an awesome way to live. To have nothing but the word and go out and evangelize and baptize just like what the LORD calls us to do.

18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,…

Question? So in Exodus 33 Moses wanted to see God’s glory, so God let Moses see His back. Does this count as seeing God? Or did John forget?
    Just wondering :D

***BE LOST IN HIS GLORY AND LOVE!!!***

  4. Pastor Ben says:

4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

True life is only found in Jesus Christ. That is one of the great things about salvation: we get to experience true life!

Another thing that sticks out in this chapter is how clear it is that even from the beginning, people understood Jesus to be the Messiah! There is no confusion there. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away our sin!

  5. 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.

This is the best gift I have ever received! Through God’s grace and mercy, I am able to receive the salvation and so many other blessings.

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

YAYYYY!!! :))))) This verse makes me feel so grateful and thankful that all my sin is taken away and that the huge burden of sin that was weighing me down is gone because of Him. And now that the Lamb of God came, we don’t have to follow all of those animal sacrifices in the OT since He was the ultimate sacrifice for our sin. Thank you Jesus!

  6. Melissa Cox says:

39″Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.

When I read this it really stood out to me for the first time that Andrew and the other disciple of John the Baptist got to spend that whole day with Jesus! What an amazing thing. They saw him, asked where He was staying, and Jesus invited them to spend the day with Him. They spent the whole day with God…this makes me really look forward to Heaven/The New Jerusalem, where I will get to spend days with Jesus in person too!

  7. Elise says:

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ)

Andrew is a someone we should all look up to! He was one of only two people who heard and believed what John said- that the Messiah was here- and followed Jesus. Then, the first thing he did was tell the people that were closest to him that the Messiah was here. What a great example for us! After we become followers of Christ, the first thing we should do is tell other people! The hardest people to share the gospel with are unbelieving family. But here, Andrew shares it with his brother FIRST! I want to be as excited as Andrew was- always telling others about the Christ and his finished work on the cross!

  8. Brooke Miller says:

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

All things are possible with Christ, and he is the creator of everything: the heavens and the earth! That is huge and God is so big that we can’t even fathom how huge our God really is! Without the Lord, there would be nothing. It is just astonishing to me how some people think creation just randomly appeared and happened without a creator! I am so blessed to be alive and that the Lord has made me according to his perfect plan. Everything that was created by God is absolutely beautiful and amazing to me! The stars in the sky for example is an awesome creation that he has blessed us with. In my life, I know I can think of tons of things to be thankful for! I do not deserve any of the blessings that God has given to me, but he is so perfect and holy!!!! Praise the Lord for everything he has made to show his glory!

  9. Hey everyone! I have had an awesome semester with you all at True North! Let’s praise the Lord for what he has done and pray 2010 will be the golden year of True North!

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

It was refreshing for me to consider this verse two weeks ago when I preached on it at Christmas in the City. We need to make a big deal about Jesus who is God becoming a man because it is a big deal! This is an awesome demonstration of his love for us and challenges me to consider how I am passing this sacrificial, humbling type of love on to others. Am I really considering my family, friends and you that much more than myself? I definitely want to do that this Christmas.

While I am on vacation I will be working on next years True North series and the teaching for Revival: Winter Edition…pray God will give me wisdom in what we will all study from his Word together!

Only a few more days of school til break…finish strong!

  10. Beth Lauder says:

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

These verses are an encouraging truth to those of us who have repented of our sins and placed our trust in Christ. As a Christian, I am one of God’s kids! Wow, that is amazing! Considering that I used to be His enemy and an object of wrath, it is even more special being His child. As His child I have all the rights and privileges of His Son ad for that I am SO grateful! This Christmas I am making sure that I praise God daily for my salvation, the best gift I have ever received. Unlike the gifts I get for CHristmas each year my salvation never loses its luster or fades away. Thank You, God, for sending Jesus to die for me and bringing me into Your family!

  11. Pastor Ben says:

    Payton! Great question about Moses.

Not only did Moses catch that glimpse on God in Exodus, we also read about Isaiah and Ezekiel having visions of the glory of God. But none of these men saw God is his full glory. Therefore, it is pretty clear that John means that no one has ever fully seen the God at any time.

Now think about how awesome this is. The holy God whom no one has ever fully seen has been revealed through Jesus! Awesome! That realization should elevate our view of Jesus and make us even more excited to read about him in the gospel of John!

I’m psyched! Who is with me!?

  12. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

46″Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.”

Wow! what an amazing chapter! It truly is awesome to know that an almighty God would go to great lengths to save us unworthy sinners! I loved Nathanel’s resonse in that his judging on Jesus was false. I’m sure to people back then, Nazereth was just a random town. To even think that the long awaited Messiah would come from there is just unheard of. And I think that it is also amazing that Jesus new who Nathanael was just by looking at him! I need to keep in mind that God does know what kind of person I am, and I need to continue to trust in Him!

  13. Summer Staeb says:

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

Wow, the very FIRST thing Andrew did after meeting Jesus was go and tell the good news to his brother, Simon! This news of the Messiah was so great that he could not keep it to himself. Am I showing this zeal for Jesus Christ everyday? It is plain selfish of me not to share about what Jesus Christ did for each one of us. My passion for Jesus Christ and my love for other people should be so great that I want everyone to hear the good news as well! I’m praying that the yearning I have for other people to not go to hell would overcome whatever fear I may have of sharing the gospel with them!

  14. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 12,”Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—”

I like this verse because it talks about JESUS giving us something we don’t deserve. Even though I believe in GOD I am still a sinner and still sin against GOD, yet HE is so loving and merciful HE has given me a right to become a child of GOD and be perfect. This makes me want to serve GOD as much as possible because HE has done so much for me it makes me want to do everything for HIM.

    CYA

  15. Cameron says:

18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

this is amazing to think about! Moses saw a glimpse of God’s glory in Exodus 33, and James, John, and Peter saw Jesus in glory at the Transfiguration in Matthew 17, but no one has seen the full, pure glory of God! Moses saw some of God’s glory and his face was shining and he had to wear a veil to cover his face! whenever people see God’s glory in the Bible they are always overwhelmed by it. we see God’s glory in Christ, who, as this verse says, has made the Father known. but we havent seen Christ face to face, but through a poor reflection (1 Corinthians 13:12). i cannot wait for the day when i see Jesus Christ is all of His glory, where all the saints will be singing praises to God, and we will worship God forever! i am praying MARANATHA! i cant wait to the Lamb sitting on the throne with all glory and honor and praise!

  16. T moore says:

10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

This verse stuck out to me because it is kinda still true today. Even though we and some other people believe this, that God created the universe, there are still people today that do not believe or acknowledge that or that Jesus was here to save us. And even as it says in verse 11, Jesus even came down to the earth as a baby, and that in itself is just so awesome that he would go from God to what we see as our lowest form of life, a helpless infant. It is just so awesome that He would do that just to save us even though we completely went against him and turned our backs to him but he still gave us that pathway to salvation to be with our creator and to worship him 24/7. This just gets me so excited and fervorized to be of him and to rep him and makes me even more excited for his return. MARANATHA !!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. angela says:

2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4In him was life, and that life was the light of men

Jesus was there in the beginning, and he will be there in the end. Through Jesus we are saved!! And because of him we get to experiance life with God. The only true life is with Jesus.

  18. Joe says:

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

It makes me so sad that he came down to be a man and gave up everything to save u and some reject him.

  19. Nicholas Bonetto says:

10 “He was in the world, and yet the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.”

Jesus created the earth and everything in it, when He came to earth, nobody recognized their own creator. This is so sad, Jesus’ very own creation rejects Him even though He came to save them. This didn’t only happen during the Bible Times, it still happens. People are still rejecting God and don’t care about it. I need to start spreading the Gospel more often. I need to show people how serious the consequence is when you reject God, its eternal death. I need to evangelize more.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  20. This chapter reminds me of the eternality of God, the Son and the Spirit and the fact that we are SOOO small! I watched a sermon recently that talked about the greatness of our God in just the realities of the solar system, the stars, and the size of us in relation to it all. I am blown away by the goodness and greatness of God and comforted by the power He holds…He is the one who always has been, is today, and always will be!

  21. jacksondahl says:

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

When I really stop to think about it, I can think about an endless amount of amazing things God has done. Most importantly, without the LORD, I would be completely dead in my sins. All things were made through God.. including me. I am nothing without him. Thinking about how much God truly has done for me just makes me want to worship and praise his name all of the time! Yet constantly, I find my mind on other unimportant things. I need to put my absolute focus on serving the LORD and praising him.

    PRAISE THE LORD!! MARANATHA!!!

  22. Allen McAnlis says:

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Christ came down to save us, not so that we couls choose to be saved ourselves. We do not choose God, He chooses us. Jesus died on the cross so that if we put our faith in Him and trust in Him, we could have eternal life. He took our pain, our suffering, our punishment, and gave us mercy that we did not deserve. I need to spend more time thanking Him this Christmas and remember what He went through for me.

  23. it's Daniel Yo! says:

26″I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.

I’m pretty sure that Jesus was being trained in Hebrew school right?

And i love this chapter, there’s so much great stuff…Verse1 has a lot of importance though, i want to memorize it for evangelism

  24. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

48″How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

This is so cool how Jesus shows nathanael that he is God. I like this chapter and how it shows me that Jesus is God and that he was there in the beginning. MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Maddie Nadeau says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

we talked about this in church! :D Pastor Bobby told us that Jesus is the word, and He is with God, and He is God too. it’s so uncomprehendibly great! Jesus is the word, but He is also with God….but He’s God too! I will never be able to fully grasp this consept and will praise the Lord for His mighty power

25questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26″I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.

i like this verse alot. When we are baptized, its just an outward expression of what has happened inside you and how you have turned from your sins to live fully for God. Only God can ‘spiritually baptize’ us and change us from the inside out

  26. Jessica K=) says:

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

This is awesome. God humbled himself and came down to earth and lived as a man so that we might know Him some day. This reminds me of how God is so full of grace and truth. He is the Light, the Truth, and the Way. Jesus is the path lit before me I need to make sure I’m always on. God is so merciful and so good to me. I give Him praise for the many blessings I have. I am so thankful that he graciously sacrificed His one and only Son so that I might be saved. Maranatha!:)

  27. Boyd Jorden says:

What an exciting first chapter! John’s language is so beautiful and really captures the glory of the Lord and the buzz surrounding the appearance of the messiah for whom so many had been waiting. I was really moved reading verse 42:

“And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when translated, is Peter).”

This is such an incredible moment for Peter–to be given a new name by Jesus, and such an incredible name at that! The rock! It makes me really think about how God sees all of us as we truly are; even more, it makes me ask myself a tough question: if Jesus gave me a new name, what would it be? What would be the qualities that would most shine through. I would obviously want Jesus to see rock-like qualities in me, but I have to examine my life and really ask myself if my words and actions are serving as a foundation to the gospel. Is my life really helping to build others up and serving as an example to unbelievers? I pray that God will really use the gospel of John to help me be a better rock for Him.

  28. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

This is so amazing, that me, a sinner, can now be with the HOLY and PERFECT God forever in Heaven because of what Jesus has done. I just need to accept Jesus and follow His commands! This is so amazing, and I’ll definitely keep that in mind this Christmas as I celebrate my saviour’s birth!

  29. Wesley Wong says:

John 1:8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

This ties in with Matthew 28, where Jesus commanded us Christians to make disciples of all nations. John himself was not perfect, but witnessed of one who was, Jesus Christ. I am not perfect, but one day I will be perfect. But until that day comes, it is up to me to witness about Jesus Christ, to be unashamed of his name, and what he done for me on the cross.

  30. Alyssa K says:

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’

I like verse 30 because although Jesus physically walked up after John, he came before him in the sense that he has existed before John has. (like how it says in the beginning the word was with God). Jesus has always been pure as a lamb and always will be pure and perfect. I am so thankful that he sacrificed himself to save me from my sins, despite me not deserving it.

  31. [DB] Derek Brower 2010 says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2He was with God in the beginning.

These verses are awesome in how they show that God is everlasting and is the Word!!! Lets dive into John!

  32. Murphy Danahy says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

These are some great verses. Jesus was with GOD in the beginning of the earth and before. He was not born, he was not created, because he is GOD. Because he is GOD and GOD is him, he created everything and without him nothing came into being. When he came and died for us he gave us life, the only light in our dark world. A chance to live in a redeemed world with him. The light is evident and obvious, but the darkness it came to has not understood it. Light does not make sense to those who have lived there whole life in the dark. So it is with CHRIST’s message, unless GOD allows us to understand it, it falls on deaf ears.

  33. Spencer Camp says:

I’m glad we are reading though John!

In this chapter some big news is being spread throughout John the Baptist and the first disciples: the Messiah, the Lamb of God is here! This is huge. The Jews had been awaiting a Savior, who they thought would be a great political ruler and would take Israel out of their bondage under the Roman Government. Instead God had an even better plan to send his Son to live a perfect life, die on a cross, and rise again, and will one day return to make everything new. Jesus will judge all those swiftly in the end, but those who are trusting in his name will be shown mercy. How great is the plan of God! Through His Son—the perfect lamb—we can made into children of God.

I want to trust in God more and more—Maranatha!!

  34. iMe llamo Kyle! says:

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John who wrote the book, who was a witness of the Word (Christ)! (v.7) John claims that Jesus is God. The Word became flesh. The Word, which is God (v.1) as John described became a man, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

  35. Jasmine Douglas says:

16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
I totally agree with you, Jasmine W! The biggest blessing the Lord has given me is eternity spent with him! This is the best gift anyone could ever receive. It reminds me of how gracious our Father is, giving us eternity with him, which we do not deserve. But because of his love, his son died for our sins so that we CAN be with him forever! Praise the Lord!!! I can totally see God’s hand at work in my life, blessing me with so much!!! I am so thankful <3

    Oh, and MARANATHA!!!!!!!

  36. trevorhosford says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

His is talking about how Jesus was with God and how he is God, this can help if anyone ever says that Jesus never said he was God

    C u all soon

  37. Katie Slusher says:

2Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

Again I’m humbled by the truth of grace. I have been given the right to be a child of God completely because of Christ’s perfect life and sacrifice on the cross. I have done nothing and will do nothing that merits me being a child of God. This right of salvation was a gracious gift from my Savior. I’m praising the Lord today for my salvation, may I never forget that I will never merit the grace I received.

  38. Dan Lauder says:

9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

While there are plenty of people decorating their houses with Christmas lights who don’t acknowledge it, the true light has already come into the world. Every time I see a bunch of Christmas lights it should remind me of Jesus, “the light of the world”.

  39. Shelby Sawyer says:

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I loved Bobby’s message a few weeks ago on this. God humbled himself and became a human. But not just a regular human a perfect sinless man. This is so amazing and I am so thankful for what the Lord did on the cross for my sins.

  40. Zach Senger says:

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

This just shows the amazingness of our God!!! THrough Him ALL things were made there was not one thing that was made aside form our God!! THat is so legit!!!! I pray that we see everything that is on this earth something that God made and see the awsomeness in that!!!

  41. Bill Morris says:

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made

This is good because we need to always remember that nothing on Earth was creatited by anything but God. We should be in awe of all the great things he has created.

  42. Joy Talcott says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I am excited about starting John and I can’t help recognizing that it jumps right into theology instead of something like a genealogy to open the book. God wanted the book of John to be predicted on the view of Christ who is fully God in verse one and fully man through the incarnation of verse fourteen. Jesus humbled himself through becoming flesh and being obedient to death on the cross (phil. 2:7-8). The Incarnation hit me afresh as I read this chapter and I am so thankful that the God of the universe was born. Let us celebrate the birth of Christ!

  43. Emily Knudsen says:

51 He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Wow this verse reminded me so much of the rapture! Its so exciting to know that someday heaven WILL open up and all christians will rise up and live with God FOREVER! Its such a blessing that God has chosen us to be his children out of everyone else, so we need to always remind ourselves to spread the word that God is coming because the world is coming to an end!

    Goodevening . . .

    I read . . .

John 1 . . . (so excited we started this book) *woot woot*

“16. From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.”

It is BECAUSE of God’s grace that I have all the things that I do. It’s not because I DESERVED them, or thought I was so “high” class that they were mandatory. NO! Infact, I don’t deserve ANYTHING. Let alone all the wonderous gifts that my Father has blessed me with. I don’t understand it. But I know that His word says He does that because of GRACE, MERCY, & LOVE that He has for me & the rest of His children.

I am recieving blessing after blessing. It’s insane that God gives me blessings. However, it’s even more MIND BLOWING that He CONTINUES to do so even though I’m not perfect. It’s like sometimes I feel like crying out, I DON’T DESERVE THIS! But You’ve still GIVEN IT & BLESSED ME WITH IT. WHY? It’s because of His grace that He has for me. His bountiful grace and continuous mercy and love for me.

I need to have the mindset that even after a test or final, I’ll feel I “deserve” a treat afterwards. Because I worked so very hard, my brain may hurt, and I think I got a good grade. But infact, I don’t deserve anything. I’m blessed enough to have an education, let alone take tests, let alone recieve decent grades on them. Whaaaat? (it’s pure craziness) It’s ALL & ONLY because of my Father.

  45. Katie Melrose says:

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This chapter is just so moving because its so interesting to hear about the baptism of Christ an again realize how he lowered and humbled himself in a human form for us ants. John is such an inspiring person because he lived such a godly life but was one of the most humbled men who ever walked the earth and he totally lived his life 100% for God. I pray that one day i can be just like Him and glorify the Lord with everything i do!

  46. Bryan Sonksen says:

    I read…

I liked verses 1-2… In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

How awesome is it that God has been there for us since the beginning. We can have assurance because of this, because we know that He was not just created but that He has always been looking out for us. And since He has been since the beginning of time, He knows all of the tricks that Satan uses to lead His people astray. Because of this, we know that we can always pray to Him when we are in temptation.

  47. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

4In him was life, and that life was the light of men

Life was Christ’s gift and He in fact is the life. Christ is the light from which all spiritual illumination comes from. He is the one that holds hope for us as humans. Without Christ, the light, I would have nothing. I would be hopeless. I am so thankful and grateful for Christ’s death on the cross for our sins.

  48. kelly causky says:

41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

We need to tell people about Jesus! If we really truly believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, the Savior from our sins, we will tell people. We would be cruel to not tell them that Jesus is the only way out of dying in your sins. Andrew told Simon, his brother, about Jesus and Simon (Peter) became the “rock” on whom God built his church. The Lord always has a plan! Let’s do our job in telling others about the Messiah and watch God do amazing things.

  49. Stacy Perkins says:

5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

In America, we have it all right in front of us, and we can STILL com-PLETE-ly MISS it. What a heavy reminder that I need to wrap ALL of my sharing and testifying in prayer. God is the One and Only, Who can remove the scales from our eyes.

  50. Haley Litz says:

41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

I like his response of Andrew here to finding and meeting Jesus. The first thing he did was he went and found his brother and told him about Jesus. Shouldn’t that be our first response once saved by Jesus??!! Jesus, the Son of God, God, became human and died for my sins and yet I can’t go and tell others about him? I want my response to be to tell everyone about him and what he has done for me! If I love him that is what I will and should do!

Praying for the pizza lunch tomorrow at Aliso, pray my voice will be back so I can speak!

  51. Brett Foreman says:

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

    - Woah imagine coming into a world you have made and no one believes you made all of this!! Jesus had a ton on his shoulders to bring people to christ!! And yes of course God could’ve just snapped his fingers and changed everyones hearts into loving, and believing in Him!! But instead God wants us to love him on our own and become a true christian without Him helping us, but instead because we want to be with God and choose to have Faith in Him!!

  52. Karsten Klein says:

11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Many times I’ll talk to people that don’t believe in God. I am glad though that I know Jesus and I want to spread the word to others so they can have the right to be children of God. I’m pumped for evangelism!

  53. Zach V says:

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is a very interesting verse. John clearly knew that Jesus was going to die on the cross and endure the wrath of God to take our punishment for the sins he commit and have committed. The disciples didn’t really know this when they were around Jesus and after Jesus’ resurrection I bet they really wanted to talk to him face to face again with their knew knowledge. Knowledge like this, knowledge that me and you have, is precious. Sometimes, well, most of the time, I forget this and fall into the rigmarole of life. Lord, let me always remember that the knowledge that you have given me is precious and that I should hold on it always. Amen.

    merry CHRISTmas :)
8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.—These verses remind me of evangelism! Jesus is the one true light that makes everyone turn from their sins and turn towards him! And since Jesus is going to be coming back one day, I need to be witnessing to others for Jesus. I should be telling people of what God has done for us and make the light known to them so that they may repent! I definitely need to be steppin it up on my evangelism! I am going to reaalllyy be praying for boldness because I know that could be a problem for me but I just need to think that it is all for the glor of God and HE IS WORTH IT!! Going to be trying to get the gospel out there this week!
    MARANATHA!!!

praying for pizza lunches this week! :D

  55. Meisha Preston says:

16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.

I have been thinking about this idea recently. That all good things come from God. I don’t deserve any of it. It is only out of the fullness of God’s grace that I get anything good. I have received blessing upon blessing upon blessing! How could I ever be discontent. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights who does not change like shifting shadows.

  56. Mark says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

These are very good verses to use in evangelizes if someone wants to go deeper than the gospel. These few verse explain so much of the first couple books of the old testament!!! I love these verses!!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Never Take David Personal says:

30This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’

I thought that this verse was worded in a really cool way….it got my mind thinking of who Jesus is….he was there in the beginning…..It is awesome to know my God, Lord, Savior, King….all were there in the beginning. I also loved how humble John is. I want to have that same humility…

  58. Jake says:

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

These two verses made me think of this last weekend’s sermon. God showed unthinkable love in sending his son to die for us in the mos painful way possible. We need to not take that for granted and be thankful for what He has done. We need to pass on the love that God has given us to other people in our lives.

  59. sam says:

51He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

I cant not wait to see this!! it will be so cool!!! Jesus is our Lord and Savior therefore we must respect and obey his laws. This world is only temporary. Heaven is forever!

  60. Sara L. says:

I really like how this chapter talks about the different kinds of baptism. It makes it *very* clear that what saves us is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and that it can only happen because of Jesus.

I also can get a lot out of the picture of the disciples following Jesus immediately once they realized who He was. I need to be just as willing!

  61. josh senger says:

27He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
this verse hit me with how amazing God really is. even the lowliest and simplest dirty thing possible in the day is far too honorable for him to do for Jesus. i am glad that He is my king and watches over me

  62. Mike says:

36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

John’s mission in life was to prepare the way for Jesus, and so when he finally came John told even his own followers to follow Jesus instead. His entire life was centered around turning people’s hearts toward repentance. He didn’t want to be known as someone who had a lot of followers, but as someone who directed the focus of everyone around him to Christ. As Christians today, we have the same choice to make on a daily basis. What are we going to be known for? When people think of us, is the first thing that comes to their mind our zeal to bring God glory and to make His name known? This can be a nice idea in concept, but in actuality it involves talking to people and bringing Christ into the conversations, a task that many simply refuse to do. This passage makes me want to be even more bold about making my life a profession of faith in Jesus and telling others the gospel, starting with inviting people to the LH campus lunch on Thursday!

  63. christopheriksen says:

11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

It’s sad how God created us and we naturally belong to Him, yet we as humans have rejected Him, the Eternal God, for fleeting pleasures of sin. This reminds me of the verse where Jesus says a prophet is not accepted in his home town. It’s sad that even though we belong to God and He is our LORD, we reject Him for things that do not even rival His awesome majesty. But thank you so much LORD that your love is faithful even when ours is unfaithful. Thank you for saving us and bringing us into this awesome relationship with you even though we at first rejected you and spat in your face. Your love is so amazing!

  64. Jacob U. says:

9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

I really need to work on being a light everywhere i go, and thusforth this verse stuck out for me. Here it is saying that a true Christian should be able to show Christ’s glory by the way he acts and treats others, which we all should strive for as Christians!

  65. Jacob Antoun 2010 says:

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Christ came to earth on a mission to seek and save! Lets be thinking about that this Christmas as we celebrate his birth as well as how he has changed our lives!

  66. Steffen Eriksen...internet problems... says:

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”

Here we find Jesus calling up some of His disciples (they obviously weren’t at the time) to come after Him. In this particular verse, Jesus is telling Philip to leave what he has behind to go and follow after Him. Many people in this world will claim to be following after Jesus. They will say they believe in Him and they will say that they love Him. Yet following Jesus is more than just saying the words. When one truly follows Jesus, they will follow after Him by the way that they live their life. A life following after Jesus is not easy. Nobody ever said it would be. In fact, it will actually be hard! To follow Him, one must fully give up everything else in his life. There is no half-way. You can’t have one foot in, yet still keep one foot hanging back on this world. This is just like water. Water is either hot or cold, for it can’t be lukewarm. With Christianity, you are either a Christian, or you are not. Like a servant can’t serve two masters, neither can a Christian cling to the things of this world. To the contrary, I need to count every material thing I have here on earth as loss. Jesus Christ needs to be that which matters more than anything else in my life, that He is the #1 priority, and there is no 2nd place. I need to get rid of anything that I may be tempted to cling to in this world. I need to always keep a mindset reminding myself that my true citizenship is in heaven, my true home. My sole focus needs to be on Christ and living a life to praise and glorify Him, no matter how appealing the world may seem, for the happiness and success it pretends to give is hollow and deceptive! I need to follow after Christ with all that I am and not let anything or anyone stand in my way or hinder my pursuit!

  67. Dan Blankenship says:

    John 1

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God becoming flesh born of a woman and lived among men. Jesus Christ took on all of mans human frailties and experienced the weakness and miseries that are common to all man. How comforting that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can personally relate to our human weaknesses. God who is truth and full of grace became flesh in Christ to live the perfect life in substitution for our sinful life. This Christmas I will not stop thanking God for the sacrifice that came to conquer sin and death so I may live eternally in His presence.

2 Corinthians 5:21 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

    PRAY FOR CAMPUS LUNCHES!

  68. Evan McKee says:

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

It is so awesome that they were able to predict this and that Jesus really did come and save us of our sins.

  69. jordan Anderson...up super late just got back from my show!!! (: says:

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I love reading about the attributes of God, and here it says he is full of grace and truth. This verse is talking the most amazing thing ever! The Lord Almighty, the creator of this universe, became flesh, a baby…nothing, for me! That to me is amazing! (: I am so thankful that the Lord did everything that he did for me to be saved. I want to see God’s glory!!!

  70. Allie Mooorefield (sorry i commented so late..had a show and homework) says:

  71. Allie Mooorefield (sorry i commented so late..had a show and homework) says:

16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
Verses 12 and 16 stood out to me. I am so glad that i have become a child of God. Like every child must obey their father, i want to obey my Heavenly Father! Verse 16 is so true! Like in the sermon last weekend, Bobby said that we are constantly recieving gifts and blessings from the Lord and it is all from His grace and never ending, unfailing love! THe Lord is so good and he blesses me every single day and most of the time, i take that for granted! I need to be more thankful of the Lord and what he does for me. Even though sometimes i dont get what i asked for…in the end it is always the better outcome because it was the Lords decision and his way is much bettter than mine! SO excited to start John(:

Please pray for my grandma, she fell at my show and broke her shoulder and arm and had to get stitches on her eyebrow. Thank you!

  72. Josh Crichton says:

John was so fortunate to have had the privalge of spending time with Jesus. He lived, talked and ate with Him. That would have been so cool. Having th privalege to do that came with knowing the absolut truth. The absolut truth that Jesus is Lord. All of us Christians know this absolute truth, and we need to be telling people about it.

  73. Angela says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

These are in my top ten of verses in the Bible. I love John’s eloquence and poetry. Verse 4 tells us how much we truly mean to Our Father. He LOVES us. He gave us the capacity to LOVE others. Verse 5 points out that we always fail at this because we don’t understand God’s perfect love.

9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

These verses also remind us that we won’t recognize Him for who He is, and that was foretold millenniums ago. We need to express compassion and LOVE for all mankind and ourselves because that is what Our Lord and Savior Jesus showed us and told us.

  74. ALFA DANA MALE says:

the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2He was with God in the beginning.

3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

I like this because it removes all doubt about whether Jesus was there in the beginning. And if God is the true maker of all or not.

  75. Rebekah Foreman ON FIRE FOR CHRIST says:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

He was He was He was. God is the Word the Word is about God and God gave us the Word. Jesus was here and God was with Him. God is the maker of everything.
