Matthew 27

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

27:1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. 28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

32 As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross. 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

The Death of Jesus

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

55 There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard. (ESV)

  1. Mark says:

3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.

Judas finally came to an understanding that he just helped crucify Jesus Christ!!! This is exactly how one would feel after dying and realizing they should have listened to that person trying to talk to them about God!! The feeling of regret, guilt, and moreover mourning!!!! Because after realizing you were wrong than youll be faced with the eternal seperation of God and the punishment of Hell!!!!! I am so glad I am on God’s team and saved from the fires of Hell!!!!

Thank You God for saving me!!!!!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

Amen Mark-Bill-Amy!!! I just read yesterdays and today’s chapter and it blows my mind every time. I visualize the whole scene in my head and how gruesome it is….I can’t imagine having to suffer the way Jesus did. Jesus faced God’s wrath in this way and to think about the mental cost it had on Him! woooow..in yesterday’s chapter, He even was suffering because He knew what was to come..what an awful thing to face and His disciples just fell asleep on Him!! epic fail. And yet He still loved them, until His death on a cross..Jesus is loving, holy, all knowing, and no one surpasses Him. I praise God today for His sacrifice and for His raising that I may be alive today through that deatha and resurrection. :,) yay for salvation!

  3. Pastor Ben says:

It’s hard to read this chapter and not be affected.

HE was pierced for MY transgression.
He was crushed for MY iniquity.
I have gone astray like a sheep, but God has laid my sin on HIM.

“13When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, NAILING IT TO THE CROSS.”
    -Colossians 2:13-14

  4. Dave Hosford, grateful sinner saved by Jesus sacrifice says:

Mat 27:11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.

Jesus is very clear about who He is! And as Pastor Ben lays out He willingly takes the incredibly large burden for my sin on Himself. What does He want me to do in response to that wonderful, costly (to Him) gift? He wants me to do what He says in the bible! Lord, help me to always keep You and Your promsies in focus today and to do what You say. Please, PLEASE, PLEASE come soon.

  5. Wesley Wong says:

Wow!! I totally agree with Ben. Jesus suffered one of the most agonizing deaths ever, and he did it for me. It’s just amazing to think of how great God’s love is! Throughout the chapter there is tragic events happening repeatedly, Jesus is being mocked and flogged, crucified and put to death, he did it all for me, for the world.

John 15:12-3- My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no other than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

God showed the greatest act of love anyone could possibly commit. Sending his one and only son down to die for us sinners. Now, he requires of me to do the same, to love as he has, to lay our lives for others.

    God Bless!!

  6. Beth Lauder says:

50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.

When Jesus died the curtain in the Jewish temple, the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place was torn in two. This curtain is what separated all of Israel from God. God’s presence dwelt above the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies. The only man allowed to go into the Holy of Holies was the High Priest, and he could only go in once a year on the Day of Atonement. The Israelites had little access to God. Their only means to a relationship with God was through the priests, they never had the privilege of being filled with the Holy Spirit and indwelt by God personally. With Jesus’ death all that changed. The curtain tearing in two represented the end to the barrier between man and God. Now, because Jesus had offered the one, perfect sacrifice for all sins, all men who repent of their sins and put their faith in Him have direct access to the throne room of God. In fact, in Ephesians 2:21-22 Paul even describes Christians as the Holy of Holies. Now God can dwell directly in men who have placed their trust in Christ. This is radical and should leave us all in shock. For thousands of years, generations of Israelites could never have even imagined having a personal relationship with God, but now, through Christ we can. Today I am grateful for the reminder that my relationship with God is an immense privilege that cost Jesus His life. My response to that must be to value my relationship with God so much that I do not let one day go by without spending time with Him in prayer and reading His Word. Since I have access to God that generations of humans could not even fathom I must not take it for granted and live a holy life of obedience to God’s Word.

  7. Dan Lauder says:

26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

That one word flogged or scourged will never just be one word if you have seen the Passion of the Christ or understand the context. According to my study Bible the Romans would tie the person to a post and then beat them with a leather whip that had pieces of bone and metal interwoven in it. It was horrifically cruel and often tore through the skin exposing bone and the underlying organs. Often the person would die during the flogging. After that they crucified him which of course was the most painful and shameful means of execution reserved for the worst of criminals. After having ones arms and legs nailed to the cross the weight of the body made it difficult to breathe. The person would try to alleviate that by pushing up with their legs which of course caused more pain throughout the body. Eventually the person would die from suffocation.

When I think of the brutal punishment that Christ endured I can’t help but be moved emotionally. It was my sin he was being punished for. That Jesus would go through that so that I would not have to is beyond amazing. While it is unpleasant to think about it motivates me to not sin and live my life for him and not myself.

  8. Stacy Perkins says:

PB–you took the words right out of my mouth. I am deeply affected having read this chapter this morning.

Jesus paid it ALL–all to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain–He washed it white as snow.

After ALL that He suffered and endured for my cheap, selfish, temporary triumphs, now that I have repented…of COURSE my life is His. ALL to Him I owe. Wherever You lead me, Lord, and whatever Your will…

  9. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

like verse 63,”"Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’”

I like this verse because it is talking about well I really actually hate what the pharisees are saying. They are calling JESUS a deceiver. The GOD who made them and loved them enough to make himself nothing and to die for them they are calling a deceiver. HE did everything for us HE lived the life we couldn’t HE died as a human and was mocked by HIS own creation who are lost and separated from HIM because of our sin. JESUS did everything for us and HE is worth it to do everything for HIM and to stay away from every sin.

  10. Shelby Sawyer says:

28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,

29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

This chapter is so heartbreaking. The Lord was killed because of my selfishness. The Lord was pierced for my sins. The perfect Lord had to endure all of my faults. How can anyone ignore his free gift of grace. The Lord who is perfect and who reins over all decided to become his own creation and be a perfect example of a human. The Lord went through everything we go through as a human but he remained perfect. I am so blessed to have the Bible to read and learn more about how amazing the Lord is.

  11. 25 All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

Its interesting how this is true but not exactly how they meant by his blood. The people meant the fact that they were responsible for His spilt blood. However, Jesus’ blood has transcended to all generations to save us from our sin. I get to enjoy eternal life, even though I’m a sinner, because of what HE did 2000 years ago. I am so grateful that God would give me this gift.

50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
53They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

Wow, the passage today is so powerful, it’s hard to pick just a few verses. Jesus suffered the ultimate worst death all for me. His love is immeasurable and exceeds anything I can imagine. What pains me most is how the Jews rejected Him. Pilate, of all people, even knew and recognized that He was innocent. Jesus’ sacrifice is the greatest gift this Christmas and I need to share it with others because it is worth more than any other gift.
These verses stood out to me because they prove that Jesus was and is the Son of God. The temple curtain tore it half. The barrier between God and man was broken. We are saved because of his death and resurrection. Jesus surrendered His spirit to God, just as we should. It would be such a sight to see the bodies of holy people (who were dead) rise to life. That would freak me out and I would certainly believe that Jesus was no ordinary man or prophet, but the prophesied Son of God. Praise be to God for loving us so much! I am so thankful for the best Christmas gift ever:)

  13. emily mayers says:

This chapter is so powerful!! It breaks my heart that Jesus (innocent and perfect) had to endure the horrible punishment I DESERVE! He had no obligation to do this….. No reason to save ME… But His perfect love washed me as white as snow! I am SO beyond thankful!

50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.

I love this part because it symbolizes the actual change that took place our relationship with Jesus… There is now NO seperation if we are saved!

  14. Jackson Dahl says:

40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”

Jesus could have so easily just gotten off the cross and walked away. But he loves us so much that he was willing to die such a painful death for us. As Christmas time approaches, I need to be really thinking about how truly amazing his love for us is! I know that I definitely wouldn’t be willing to become an ant just to save the ant population, but that is essentially what Jesus did. I need to be serving him to show him how grateful I am for what he has done and for forgiving my sins. I also need to show other people in my life the same kind of amazing radical love that he has shown me!

    PRAISE THE LORD!!! MARANATHA!!!!

  15. trevorhosford says:

25All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

wow this would really suck to be one of their children, they killed Jesus and put the blame on their children.

c u all at small groups

  16. glenn says:

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?

The question that every human must face —now or at eternity

Lets give our friends and even strangers the opportunity to respond to this question this week at school, at work, at starbucks or wherever.

  17. 52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.

    This is so cool!

This is so sad to see everything Jesus went through for my sin and that He loved me this much to endure it. Sometimes we have heard that Jesus died on the cross for our sins so often that we tune out to it or take it for granted. Jesus was a perfect person and had to go through so much when I am an imperfect sinner. I pray that I can follow His example. Sometimes I think it’s hard with the little things like loving my enemies and praying for those who persecute me. The commands that God has given are nothing compared to want Jesus had to do so I want to follow them and Him with everything I have.

  18. Bill Morris says:

30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

We need to realize what hardships Jesus went through for us, and we need to be forever thankful. He died on the cross and took our punishment so that we wouldnt have to suffer. That is awesome

  19. angela says:

This whole chapter is really good. Just to show us the pain ans suffering the Jesus went through for us even when we did not deserve it. Jesus died for our sins so that we may be able to enter heaven. I am just so thankful for what He did for us. He endured the beating, the mocks, and the crown of thorns on his head for us, I mean that is just amazing. I just really thank God for what he did and want to live my life for him <3

  20. Brooke Miller says:

31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Wow, this passage is so sad! I am just so blessed and thankful for what God has done for me on the cross. I am saved because of what he has already done, not because of what I have done. I am a sinner who deserves eternal hell and to be separated from Christ! It is so amazing and huge to know that the Lord humbled himself to birth as a baby and was absolutely perfect and died for my sins. He deserves my absolute best and all my praise! i want to obey and honor God as long as I live and have no temptation snatch me from God’s hands!!!!! Maranatha!

  21. Emily Knudsen says:

23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

I think this verse is so crazy and sad! Jesus had done NOTHING WRONG, and yet everyone wanted him crucified! I think that it just shows how much God loved us and because he loved us he send Jesus to earth who was made so “low” <referring to Jesus becoming a human, and was put to death because of every mistake that WE have made. Its like you committing a crime and having your best friend who has never hurt or done anything wrong, going to jail for you because that best friend loves you! Would`nt you thank and think of that person everyday!?!?! Well since Jesus died for us when we deserved to die- we should think and thank him everyday! :)

  22. Melissa Cox says:

65″Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”

66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

I love the fact that they made Jesus’ tomb extra secure with a seal on the stone and a guard. There was NO way anyone could have taken Jesus’ body. Jesus was raised from the dead! He conquered death. As many of you already wrote, this is a hard chapter of Matthew to read. Especially when I remember that He died on that cross for ME. He suffered for me and took my penalty. Thank you Jesus.

  23. Murphy Danahy says:

15Now it was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
16At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
18For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

Get this, Barrabas was a criminal, likely some sort of murderer or other dangerous person, but the people called out for him to be released instead of the man who healed their sick and brought them forgiveness and kindness. This shows how the natural instinct of man is against GOD. I am so grateful that CHRIST died for our sins so that we could live forever, and the story of what he went through is so terrible, and yet he endured all of it for us.

  24. Joe says:

65Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”
66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

That verse proves wrong all the people who said the body was stolen because it would have been impossible

  25. jasmine douglas says:

4″I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”

5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Sad sad story! But as Im reading it, I’m thinking to myself, Ok. God planned for this to happen all along. The betrayal was part of God’s sovereign plan that needed to happen in order for Christ to be crucified. Every time we sin, remember that Jesus died for every one of those sins. It makes you rethink about your actions and the things we do in our daily lives. Lets live a life set apart that pleases God and sin LESS

  26. Tristan Jorden says:

It’s so hard to believe that God would have this done for us; even more so that Jesus accepted to be the sacrifice! What amazing act of love of which we are so undeserving.

  27. it is so crazy and heart breaking all of the terrible things that Jesus Christ went thu and noot just the physical pain but the ridiculing and how everyone went against him and how they all denied him and wasnted him dead over Barabbas who was 100 times worse than Jesus cud ever be. But i meanif there was an ultimate price to pay for everyones sins that definitely is a winner

  28. Lizzie McCoy says:

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?

What shall we do? Praise Him! Give Him ALL the glory!

  29. Zach Senger says:

This chapter just makes me sit here in amazement and think of my sin and see what i have done to make Jesus go through all of this !!! It is so heartbreaking to see Jesus being beaten and flogged and stripped of His clothes!!! It makes me def think of my fiught with sin and want to fight it harder and harder every day!!!

  30. Katie Slusher says:

It’s so important to remember the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. I’m thankful that during this Christmas season we had the opportunity to read through this chapter in Matthew. We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ because of the cross. He came to earth to die and paid the penalty for our sins. Thank the Lord for the suffering he endured on the cross so that I could have a relationship with the Father!

“O Praise the One who paid my debt and raised this life up from the dead!”

  31. Jacob U. says:

Thank you so much Lord for dying on the cross for me!! I know that without this I, and all other humans, would be completely hopeless. It is so amazing, that in this one chapter, so many prophieses were fufiled, from thirty peices of silver, to the fact that no bones on Jesus would be broken. THANK YOU SO MUCH LORD!!!

  32. ELLA says:

REALLY!?!?!?! Did they really have to choose Barrabas. I mean seriously, ugh. But if they didn’t choose Jesus, then there would be no Savior. Jesus’s purpose in his life was to be the Savior of the earth and to save us all from death. HE IS JUST SO AMAZING!!!

  33. Ben says:

It’s amazing that the Lord of the Universe would stoop to become a man, with all of our feeling and temptations. THat he would lead a human life, perfectly, and that he be tortured, mocked, and crucified on a tree to save us from eternal punishment.
    THANK YOU LORD JESUS!!!

  34. Boyd Jorden says:

46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

This verse really struck me this time. Jesus, the son of God, had to not only endure a slow, horrible death, but He also had to endure a painful separation from God, His father, because He took on my sins and the rest of the sins of the world. That separation must have been even more painful than the actual crucifixion. What an incredible sacrifice! Thank you Jesus for redeeming me. I’ll never be able to repay your love and kindness, but one day I’ll be able to be with you and thank you in your presence.

  35. Spencer Camp says:

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.

The moment Jesus died, when he took on the punishment of us all, we were then allowed access to God. This is amazing!

I am just going to explain it because I don’t want to take for granted something so great:
God sent his Son to be the perfect template of righteousness for us so that through faith we could be considered righteous and perfect before God and be saved from the fires of hell. It can be said in such a simple sentence, but I want to truly ponder and praise God for the truly miraculous love he has shown me by becoming a man, suffering persecution and torment, being crucified on the cross, all for me. Praise to Jesus Christ in Heaven—for He has shown me love—and called me one of his sons.
    Maranatha!!

  36. Zach V says:

63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’

This is a happy story. Jesus took the punishment for our sins on the cross. Jesus, you have all the glory for it. But, some people forget to mention that he rose three days later. He defeated death! Praise be to God! When we are in heaven, we will be singing this to Jesus, for to Him, all praise will be given. Thank you LORD for dying on the cross and rising again.

  37. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

42″He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

This verse just shows me how much Jesus did for me and I am sooooo thankful. I should be like him and look for times that I can be a slave.

  38. Jenna Perry says:

This whole chapter is so intense and it really causes me to realize how great Jesus is and what torturous things he suffered through to forgive our sins!! Jesus went through the most extreme punishments that back then the worst of the worst went through, but Jesus endured it for doing absolutely nothing! Before i became a Christian i would hear this story and always think of how Pilate was the one that was trying to defend Jesus and i would think that his ‘pleading’ was good enough and i wouldn’t think of Pilate as a ‘bad’ person. Now i realize that he was he maybe felt sorry for Jesus but he was more worried about pleasing the crowd and fulfilling what they wanted to be done to Christ and he wasn’t thinking about Jesus’ innocence… that’s what stood out to me most!!

  39. It's Daniel Yo! says:

3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.

Question: does this mean Judas was saved and is in Heaven?

  40. Brick-E (reppin Jesus Christ 24/7) says:

23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

How amazing is Jesus!!! He committed no sin and yet he stayed quiet and took the punishment I rightfully deserve!!! He took the punishment for MY sins, not what he did, but for every sin everyone would ever do! That is amazing to me! Thank you Jess Christ!!!!!!!!!!!
    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. Brett Foreman says:

13Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”

14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
_ WOW!!! lets put ourselves in Jesus’ position… God tells him that he will be crucified for all of our sins!!!! thats crazy already and so much for Jesus to have to have on his shoulders! and then as he is getting mocked and cursed at he says nothing in reply to get back at people or anything. He knows His job and does what he has to do. It is amazing how Jesus can have so much courage to take in all thats happening and be calm and go through this!!!! I pray that we will try to have strength like this when we come to hardships, and that we ask God for strength to pull through in all aspects of life!!!!

  42. kelly causky says:

Wow. The price Jesus paid for all of us non-deserving people is amazing. Amazing grace.

9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel,
10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

This really amazes me to think that Biblical prophecy is fulfilled so precisely. It was not a lucky guess or a coincidence. And the prophecy was not a generality; it was specific and it came true -even hundreds of years after it was written. Only God can be that powerful.

  43. Karsten Klein says:

11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.

Its awesome how no matter what, Jesus doesn’t sin. Even when he is threatened with death and suffering he doesn’t lie to pilate. I want to be like him and learn not to sin no matter what. Sometimes its hard not to do something wrong when you’re having a bad day and nothing seems to be going right, but I want to be able to overcome that and put my faith in God that everything will, eventually, be ok.

  44. mady(: says:

This chapter makes me so sad :( It gives me a stomach ache to think about how I PUT JESUS TO DEATH :(

Matthew 27:22-23 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

Before I was a Christian, I would just kinda read over this in Bible class.. no big deal. Jesus died on the cross, Id heard it before. But now that I know how much of a filfthy sinner I am, and how amazing Jesus truly is, this chapter saddens me so much!!!! I totally agree with Ella! There is a part of me that wishes they would have chosen Barbarus and Jesus wouldnt have had to go through the pain and suffering for me. But then, I wouldnt be going to heaven when I die. I am so thankful for Jesus and his never ending love for us sinners. It doesnt make any sense to me, why he would die for me, but i know I am eternally thankful and grateful!!

Daniel: To answer your question… Im pretty sure Judas wasnt saved. First of all, Jesus said this in Matthew 26:24 “The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” And then also, In Luke it says that Satan actually entered him in Luke 22:3. He acknowleged that he had sinned, but he never repented, and also he never acknowledged that Jesus was God, and he never acknowledged Jesus as his King. soooo i dont think Judas is in heaven because no where in the Bible does it say that he repented and surrendered to Christ. Hope that helps.

ITS ALMOST CHRISTMAS BREAK GUYS!! ONE MORE WEEK! WE CAN MAKE ITTT :D

  45. Kelsey says:

54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

I can only imagine what was going through theses soldiers minds, knowing that they just denied and crusified Jesus Christ, the son of God. They must have been filled with so much remorse and sorrow and regret. When you think about it however, wedo the same thing. It was our sins that put him up on the cross. And each time I sin, i am just denying him and adding to it. I should be filled with the same amount of remorse and regret. This verse reminds t=me of the importance of obedience and motivates me to follow him.

  46. Josh Crichton says:

This Chapter had alot in it. I felt it had alot of power. It really reminded me of the real reason I am celebrating Christmas this year, to celebrate that Jesus came to this earth. He came, to die (as the chapter talks about), for us, FOR ME!!! I was really moved and I hope that this is the reason that we all celebrate Christmas.

  47. payton :D says:

I don’t EVER want my heart to glorify God and then immediately turn and be against Him. I want to be for Him and NEVER be destracted from earthly thngs. God is so great and powerful that He needs to be glorified! Praise the LORD for He is good! :D

    ***Sing PRAISE to the KING!!!***

  48. Alison says:

46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Wow…I can’t even IMAGINE what Jesus went through… and he did it all for ME. I am so unworthy, so undeserving, I insulted and personally hurt him and he DIED and suffered seperation from God for ME. I can’t believe it!!!
    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!

  49. Morgan Sherman says:

22″What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!”

Boy was this a chapter. I know that I do not thank Jesus enough for what he did for me on that cross. I used to be an enemy of God, and because of his perfect life and this brutal death, I can have his life credited to mine and become a child of God. Jesus showed the ultimate act of love here in this chapter. As Bobby said today, many of us know this story backwards and forwards. But how many people am I telling? I was reallly convicted from this sermon today, and I am going to be extra bold for Christ this CHRISTmas season as we celebrate his unconditional love.

  50. Sara L. says:

42″He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

Jesus *is* the Son of God. By submitting to death on the cross He was fulfilling God’s will. If God willed it, Jesus *would* have asked God to save Him and it would have been done. But it was not God’s will for that and I am *so* thankful for
what Jesus did for me! I don’t deserve it but I’m not going to be one of those people who is rejecting the gift!

  51. Josh Nance says:

25All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

This verse means to me that even though he suffered a terrible and bloody death on the cross for us sinners, he still loves us with an everlasting love and I am so grateful for that.

  52. Meisha Preston says:

50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

This is why Jesus came. It was for this moment that he was born. We are celebrating the birth of Jesus but at the same time we have to remember the Christ that died on the cross. There is an old song I learned when I was little that says:

Do you worship the babe in the manger
But reject the Christ of the cross?
Your redemption comes not by the manger
But the death of Christ on the cross!

So many people will celebrate Christmas, even put out nativity scenes and celebrate Christ’s birth. But they don’t realize that Christ was born so he could live the perfect life I could never live and then die to take the punishment that I deserve. This Christmas I want to focus on Christ’s birth and celebrate that but remember at the same time the reason he came. Christ came because I am separated from God. He came so that I could be made right with God through his death and resurrection. What an awesome God we serve!!!

  53. josh senger says:

12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.

13Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”

14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

when i read these verses i started to think about what i would be thinking about if i were in jesus’ position. all of these people in high ranking positions are acussing Him falsely and saying cruel things about Him and He doesnt reply to any o fit except to claim His divine authorit as God himself. He could have just walked out of their with no problem at al in a glorious marade of angels for all to see, but He knew that this was the only way for us lowlt humans to be saved from our sins that we commit daily. i am going to focus on fighting my flesh by thinking about how Jesus had to suffer for me and how anything i go thru here on earth is nothing compared to what He had to do for me

  54. Lexi says:

29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

-Thinking of the pain innocent Jesus had to endure for our sins makes me feel sick. We are so unworthy of our God’s great mercy and unfailing love. This just motivates me to live the best way I can and try my hardest not to sin. It is the least I can do for what Jesus did for me, for all of us. Amen and thank you Lord for everything!

  55. jordan Anderson says:

Our Lord went through the worst thing imaginable for me, and he did it in innocence. I am so thankful for my Lord, and all that he did for me here on this earth. I want my heart to be his 100%. I don’t want to shift and change my focus. I am in it 100% for Jesus Christ, and excited to live out the rest of my life for him and his glory!! (:

  56. Allie Mooorefield!!!!!!!!(: says:

40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”
42″He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

This chapter makes me so sad to think that people would actually do this to the One and Only God! They mocked him, spit on him, made him carry his own cross, beat him, and many more! Many of the people at the crusifiction made the Lord prove himself. Sometimes i feel that people must see things before they believe them and these verses are very obvious in proving that! While Jesus was on the cross, at any time he could have came down from the cross adn killed everyone that mocked him or betrayed Him. He could have stopped them from whipping him and beating him, but he didnt, he got mocked and spit on and beaten and died because he loves us and to give us a chance to spend life with Him! He has unfailing love and i love reading these chapters in all the gospels because it shows how much the Lord loves me! I love the Lord with all my heart and not only do i believe in the Lord from my head, but i believe in Him with my heart<3

  57. Mike says:

64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”

It is really sad how, after the death of Christ, His enemies are more concerned with His prophecy than his closest friends. While they didn’t believe He would rise from the dead, the religious leaders feared that the disciples would steal the body, so they had the tomb guarded. But the disciples, who should have remembered Jesus’ words and waited expectantly for that third day, instead ran and hid, where they remained until jesus revealed Himself to them. This reminds me of all the claims that Christianity is a religion of hypocrites… and in many ways, it has become so. Mormons, among others, adhere more firmly to their damning lies than many Christians hold to the truth. And those who care nothing about following Christ can still see that those who do claim to follow Him live lives no different from everyone else. We need to be different. It is impossible to read this chapter without reflecting on the greatness of God’s love for us – a love so incomprehensible, that He would come into our world and die for us even while we were still His ENEMIES – and this love needs to motivate me to living my entire life to serve Him and to be an example of someone who does not take the sacrifice for granted.

  58. j. watkins says:

This was intense. It really opens your eyes to the atrocities that He endured, and what the people of the time thought of him.

Over Barabbas, they took an innocent man’s life, simply “out of envy”.

  59. Never Take David Personal says:

9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel,

I love it when the Bible just straight up tells you that it just fulfilled prophecy….that is super cool….

anyways I was reading the story of Jesus and his crucifixion and wonder how all of these teachers of the law, and all these Jewish leaders that knew all about the law and the prophets, didn’t recognize all of the fulfilled prophecy that was going on….that just shows that God is sovereign and in control…and that is an awesome thing…

  60. Steffen Eriksen has been having extreme internet problems... says:

9and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

Even just every time that I read this, I am just overwhelmed to see how Jesus suffered, and I am even more thankful as I see how excruciating his death really was. These two verse record how Jesus had a crown of thorns twisted together to be shoved down upon his head. It records that the people put a staff in his right hand as they mocked him for the truth of him being “King of the Jews”. And then the next verse says that they spit on him, then took the staff that he was holding and beat him on the head over and over again. And all of this right here isn’t with the actual crucifixion, to see the nails driven through his hands and feet as he was put to hang from the beams of the cross. And even more than all of the physical pain He suffered, He felt the Father turn His back on Him. Jesus is God, being perfect and without sin, yet at that time all of the sins of the world were placed on Him. The whole story of the crucifixion is truly amazing. I can still continue to stand in awe to see God’s perfect Son sacrifice Himself for a population of people wholly undeserving of salvation. I need to overflow with thankfulness as I see Jesus’ blood poured out for me. Seeing here of how He has died for me, I need to respond to this with a commitment to die to myself and live fully for Him!

  61. christopheriksen says:

25All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

I was just thinking how sad a statement this was, people saying let the blood of Christ be on our hands and on the hands of our children. It’s sad because He is the Son of God and these people want to take responsibility for crucifying Him. How can that end up in anything but more judgment.

52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.

I also just thought that this part was really awesome. I remember that the curtain was torn in two and there was darkness and earthquake when Jesus died, but i didn’t remember people getting raised back to life. This just shows the amazing power of our God which is even more awesomely demonstrated in how He saved us from our sins. Thank you LORD for your goodness, may you be praised forever.

  62. [DB] Derek Brower 2010 says:

29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

Im so waiting for the day when everyone will bow down and worship the Lord!!!! But when He is glorified, not being crucified! MARANTAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  63. Ian H. says:

As pastor Ben said, it’s hard to read this chapter, to picture what happened in your mind, and to not be affected. It’s such a grim, even disturbing picture. But that’s how amazing the love of God is; He SO loved the world that He was willing to kill His only Son. And for who? For you and for me: wretched, hopeless, corrupt sinners; rebels against Him, rightly doomed to His eternal justice (hell). Lord God, thank you so much for your love; thank you so much that you did send your Son, that you even abandoned Him to your wrath, so that I could be right with you. Please give me a greater realization of my lowliness, my hopelessness, and my desperate need for your Son Jesus Christ. Please show me that without Him, I have absolutely no hope. Amen.

  64. Dan Blankenship says:

    Matthew 27

19While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”

This verse was fascinating to me because it was so unusual in context. Why did Pilates Wife have a bad dream which made her to suffer a great deal? There seems to be no real reason for Pilate’s wife to dream about Jesus Christ. I think that it’s awesome to see how God had given witness thru these two people who didn’t know Jesus Christ but knew He was an innocent man. As we read in Daniel God used dreams to touch the spirit of Nebuchadnezzar. In Genesis 41 we read about Pharaoh’s dream that was from God revealing what He was going to do.

Daniel 4:3 4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented and prosperous. 5 I had a dream that made me afraid. As I was lying in my bed, the images and visions that passed through my mind terrified me.

Genesis 41:8 8 In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.

Here are just two examples out of many in the Bible where God spoke to people using dreams. Since God’s Word has been revealed to us He speaks to us thru our conscience instead of thru dreams. God’s Word is complete!

I am so angered whenever I read about the crucifixion but I am so thankful to God that He loved me enough to send his Son so that I may live thru Christ’s death and resurrection.

Let’s be praying with daily fervor for True North Campus Lunches at the high schools this week!

  65. Pastor Bobby says:

What a contrast between celebrating Jesus’ birth this morning and then reading about his death tonight! Yet this is clearly why he came from the very beginning! Something that brings us so much joy and hope today, cost Jesus so much sacrifice and pain on that day. I praise Jesus who took my place and cannot wait to see his face!

  66. Rebekah Foreman ON FIRE FOR CHRIST says:

Mat 27:11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.
This is so amazing because Jesus was not afraid to proclaim who He was and was not afriad to say I am Lord and King.

50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
Jesus died on the cross for us to give us a second chance and salvation and I thank you Lord for that.
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
This is what Jesus can do and the power He has.
