Proverbs 1

The Beginning of Knowledge

1:1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Enticement of Sinners

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
for they are a graceful garland for your head
and pendants for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood;
let us ambush the innocent without reason;
12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we shall find all precious goods,
we shall fill our houses with plunder;
14 throw in your lot among us;
we will all have one purse”—
15 my son, do not walk in the way with them;
hold back your foot from their paths,
16 for their feet run to evil,
and they make haste to shed blood.
17 For in vain is a net spread
in the sight of any bird,
18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood;
they set an ambush for their own lives.
19 Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain;
it takes away the life of its possessors.

The Call of Wisdom

20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
23 If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 Because I have called and you refused to listen,
have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
25 because you have ignored all my counsel
and would have none of my reproof,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when terror strikes you,
27 when terror strikes you like a storm
and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.
28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;
they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 would have none of my counsel
and despised all my reproof,
31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,
and have their fill of their own devices.
32 For the simple are killed by their turning away,
and the complacency of fools destroys them;
33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure
and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.” (ESV)

    Hey i was just wondering who Old man New heart was…. i think alot of people would want to know…and good job being on here everyday…just curious…

  2. This is Derek Brower says:

    10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

    How often are we tempted by sin? How often are people wanting us to sin with them at school or anywhere else? Unfortunately, those happen a lot to a ton of people. We live in a very dark world, but we can not be a part of it. We need to resist the evil desires of flesh, and be constantly looking forward to eternity with the Lord. Those people are running into sin! They are looking to please the flesh, and look what happens to them:

    19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.

    Their lives will be taken away. Sure, they think that they are so cool and popular here on this earth, but when the Lord comes and judges everyone, the unsaved will all be cast away from the Lord forever. They will spend eternity separated from our God.

    If we are to truely love our enemies, like Jesus said in Matthew 5:43-44, then we need to present the Gospel to them and let it be known that eternal suffering isn’t the only choice! We can have eternal life with our Savior through His name!

  3. Mike says:

    23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    God has not made wisdom some sort of unattainable fantasy. The key to wisdom and knowledge is a proper fear of the Lord that leads to action. If we fear incurring God’s wrath because of our sin, then we will desire to live a life that is pleasing to Him, and this desire should lead us to read and study the Bible. God has given us His Word to show us how to live wisely in a world that is unwilling to accept the fact that it is unwise. Those who are in the world do not see their need for godly wisdom because they are following after their own worldly ‘wisdom,’ which will eventually lead to death. But if we call out to God for wisdom and study His Word to see how He would have us live, He will be faithful to reveal His wisdom to us and to guide us in the path that we should take.

  4. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    I love this verse! We need to fear the Lord because he is the one who decides whether you go to heaven or hell. Once you start to fear God, you develop knowledge as this verse says. People who fear men rather than the Lord are fools, and destruction will come upon them! Especially when evangelizing, we need to be in fear of God and in fear of what he thinks of us, not man! We are commanded do it!

  5. Old man new heart says:

    Hey True Northers – (and Curious too!) Old man new heart is a sinner saved by the grace of Jesus after wasting 36 years of life as God’s enemy. As a result he knows a couple things are true north:

    ~ God gave him a new heart with a deep desire to worship Jesus by serving others and denying his old, evil ways,

    ~ As the song goes: he ‘so hates consequences’ but knows only loved ones get them in order to grow, and

    ~ He pleads with God to search his new heart daily so he can confess and have God draw him back because as God says in Proverbs 1:33 …whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.

    BTW – does anyone want to share about the challenge Old man left regarding how to be tested and approved as Paul described Apelles?

  6. 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck

    God put our parents in our lives for a reason. Even if they are not christians, we should still honor them(and tell them the gospel). But if they are christians, we should listen to the wisdom that they give us from experience.

  7. Beth Lauder says:

    32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    The contrast of these two verses is intense! We have two choices…to ignore wisdom and live according to what we deem is right which leads to destruction or to listen to wisdom and live in safety without fear of harm. This is a no brainer! If we seek God DAILY through the reading of His Word and prayer and obey what He calls us to do that is a step in the right direction. As we make decisions throughout the day we must constantly seek the LORD to be sure that His will is in line with the direction we are taking. The more we fear God and lean on Him for all things in life the more He will make our paths staright and guide us to His will. As Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your pahts straight.”

  8. James Purr says:

    10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

    11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul

    I thought the part where he talks about lying in wait to kill someone was interesting. Although we would never kill someone, we sometimes do lie in wait to put somebody down or make a harsh comment about someone. We might as well be waiting to kill someone—it matters that much in the eyes of God. We need to be more diligent in checking our thoughts and deeds and when we fail we need to bring it to the Lord and repent and go a new direction.

  9. Brittany Stewart says:

    I’ve been told that verse 7 is the key to the book of proverbs. Its wonderful to realize that God blesses those to fear him with knowledge! Also, we learn that fools despise wisdom and discipline. How often do we get in trouble for something and yet we try to blame someone else. With a repentant heart we need to listen and then change the way we act. I’m excited to go through Proverbs with all of you!!

  10. matt says:

    verse 7 is…… so awesome and true! what a verse this should be a memory verse! the fear of the Lord is the beginning of everything including salvation! We need to fear the Lord in all we do, and if we dont truly fear the Lord we probably arent worshipping him either..

    lets fear the lord and wait for his returning!

    maranatha!!!!!!

  11. Alex Mishreki says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck

    I loved these verses! They seem to be speaking to an age group that today is only growing farther and farther from their parents: teens. I have heard countless times of teenagers saying bad things about their parents. They are in constant disobediance, and refuse to submit to their mom and dad. But if you take a step back to look at this rebellious teen’s life, you see exactly how percise God’s word is about it! Whatever relationship we have with our parents will be mirrored by our actions and our lives. These verses are not telling us not to obey our father and mother because “we know best”, but because we don’t! Therefore, we need to make sure that we are listening and obeying our parents because the result will be a “graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck.”

    Romans 12:11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spritual fervor serving the Lord.

  12. Meisha Preston says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

    Most people view the instruction and rules given by their parents as burdonsome and things to be ignored. But Proverbs teaches us that the wise man listens to this instruction and it is beneficial. This is so contrary to modern culture.

  13. LG says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    This is a verse I love and memorized because it is such a good verse to have in my mind. I memorized this verse because it helps me to obey God and not follow my feelings when I want to be disobediant to my parents.

  14. Brandy Crane says:

    hey sorry i couldn’t post for awhile because i was on vacation =( but i am back! =)

    YAY!!!! i love proverbs!!! and can’t wait to read through it again

    23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.

    24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,

    25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,

    26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-

    27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

    28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me

    God always is willing to make his thoughts known to us which is why he gave us his word to live and obide by. in return however we must be willing to listen to what he has to say not allowing pride to get in our way but to apply God’s word and put to use what he has commanded. not letting any worldly temptation get in the way.

    i am currently trying to dissern through all the situations i wind up in and look to the bible for what i should do. i have to admit at times i am tempted to do just what i want but am feeling the conviction when i read verses that let me know i am in sin.

    we all need to fight the sin in our lives and obey God’s commands

  15. Eric Walker says:

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    This verse is very straight forward. It is saying that those who follow God and do his will will be blessed and live in safety and be at ease. Those who do not follow God or fear him will not be blessed and will live a much harder life without the Lord. We all need to pray that God will keep us on track with him. :)

  16. Kyle Johnson says:

    Proverbs, the book about wisdom and discipline!
    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching

    I love how Solomon started Proverbs out, stating what Proverbs is about, then totally just had an explosive start to start proverbs in verse 7. We got to fear the Lord, because we know the Lord is going come back and judge the world for it’s sin.
    Verse 8 is what we need to memorize, we need to listen to what our dad’s say it’s important we need to listen to them! We need to do what our mom’s teach us or tells us stories about, like saying hi to strangers or do not do stuff or their will be consequences.

    15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
    16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.

    I had some bad friends in middle school in 7th grade, they actually went to my old church. I am so thankful that I did not have set my foot on their paths or did not go along with them in 8th grade or now. It’s sad verse 18 describes them and now they don’t go to church, they do drugs and they a lot of other bad things that I don’t need to talk about, but instead I’m walking with the Lord on His path looking forward to that day where the path meets Heaven and be with God in His presence for eternity!

  17. Cameron Baxter says:

    29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,

    this is a concept that is mentioned many of times in the Bible, especially Proverbs. people who do not fear the Lord are fools. in verse 7, it says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. if we truly fear the Lord, then he will bless us with wisdom and knowledge, which he gives generously to all who ask (James 1:5). fearing the Lord is a theme constant throughout Scripture, and it certainly has its benefits

  18. Murphy Danahy says:

    11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul;
    12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
    13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
    14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse”-
    15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;

    This is great words of wisdom. They pretty much speak for themselves, so I won’t write much, but still, take these words to heart do not be quick to anger and do not follow sinner’s paths.

  19. vsunshine says:

    Yessss!!! I can’t wait to read this book full of/about wisdom and knowledge!!!

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    Wheww this should give us such a great sense of security! If we are Christ’s followers, then we should be led by Him and since we have given ourselves completely to Him, we should obey everything that He commands. And when we listen/obey Him we are guarenteed (here in this verse) saftey and a fearless life! So many people suffer from stress, depression, anxiety ect, but the answer to their problems lies with God. He is the only one who can give them what they are searching for! Just like the song we sing in church….”for I will fear no evil. For my God is with me. And if my God is with me, whom then shall I fear?” Nothing here on earth should make us fear more than the coming wrath of God for all the nonbelievers! But to us who are saved, we have the security and assurance of knowing that here on earth nothing can destroy us because our souls will be with God forever…and no one here on earth can take that away!
    Praise God for that! Maranatha!

  20. Haley Litz says:

    I love Proverbs!!

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    Fearing the LORD is the key to gaining wisdom and knowledge. If you don’t fear the Lord, then you are a fool. The Lord can kill both body and soul in hell. A fear of Him should motivate us and make us desire to be in the word daily and wanting to grow in our relationship with him. It should spur us to continually fight sin and not give in to temptaions. We must fear the LORD!!!

  21. Sarah G.! says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    The fear of the Lord can bring many attributes.. but began with the obedience to His remarkable word!! Repentance and obedience should be our first response as we fear the Lord! As Mike was saying, that is why it is sooo very important to study His word, that we may please our merciful and powerful Lord! Do not be the fool who loses his life, but receive wisdom and discipline with gladness, obeying His commands! :D

  22. spence says:

    10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

    We must to the come to the reality that there are people out there who are enemies of God. And since we are sons of God they are against us also. We must realize the difference between sons of God and sons of the Devil. We can’t act as they do. Can we honestly say to ourselves that there is a noticeable stark difference between us and our non-christian friends? Are we b

  23. spence says:

    eing a influence on our friends or is it the other way around? If they are being the influence then we must obey the command of this proverb. ” If sinners entice you, do not give into them.”

  24. Brett says:

    I like the first few verses of this chapter outlining who this book is written for. Everyone who calls themselves a Christian should really take this book to heart, mainly because it is so practical and applicable to our daily lives. So let’s be reading this book every day because it will really help us grow in knowledge and wisdom (just like it says).

  25. Beth says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    I know everyone already commented on this verse, but I just want to say that Bobby gave the best simple explanation that I have ever heard of what it is to fear God in one of his sermons a while ago. He said that fear changes behavior. If we fear God, our behavior every day will reflect that. I think he gave the example of how if you are afraid of a spider you will change your course of action and leave the room. When we become Christ’s disciples, our new response to sin is to run in the opposite direction from temptation and sin because we have a fear of God.

  26. Jenaee (= says:

    23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.

    We need to be responsive to Gods word and by doing this we will learn more about him.

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    We basically learn at True North every week that we need to fear the Lord. We need to actually put it into ACTION. That is the first step and by doing that we will gain more knowledge and not be fools.

  27. jeff Modugno says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    I liked this chapter. This was the verse that stuck out to me because so many highschoolers don’t like or listen to their parents. We as Christians need to lead by example and listen to our parents better.

  28. Jonny Wright says:

    17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
    18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!

    These men whose feets are quick to shed blood are only setting a trap that they will get caught in. If we are enticed by them (Proverbs 1:10) are we not like them. We will be caught in the same net of God’s judgement. We need to live according to God not according to what some earthly men say is “cool.” I believe that there is nothing cooler than following God. Praise be to God.
    God is good.

  29. "Momma Burke" says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    This verse is so simple but so profound. I was sharing the gospel with a non-beleiver this weekend and he was intently listening to all the facts, not disagreeing with anything. However, he said that he wanted to wait until he was older and had kids to start thinking about eternity and the things of God. He is depising wisdom, he could not understand why it mattered to him right now. This verse is a good reminder to me to spend more time imparting the “fear of the Lord”. Fear of the Lord is what will begin a path of knowlege of God. I think ‘fear’ is FEAR but also a recognition of ALL of God’s immutable attributes with immense reverance and humility. Fear of the Lord, and understanding that God is not some jolly old Grandpa in the sky, will hopefully help people to glimpse that He is PERFECT and PERFECTLY JUST we are not which will ultimately lead to their need for repentance.

  30. christopher eriksen says:

    10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

    Great comment Spencer, we can definitely apply this verse by looking at our friendships and seeing if we are influencing and urging them to be godly or if they are distracting us. Even if we think we are not being corrupted, if we just stay silent, we will begin to drift, so we need to make sure that we are encouraging others to repent rather than let them influence us into sin.

  31. Luke Melrose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! says:

    VERSE 8
    Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    We need to obey our parents??? YES! When our dad tells us to do something, do it! And dont give any back talk! We also need to obey our mom! Even the small things she told you when you were a kid (eat vegitables, look both ways before crossing the street, wash your hands before dinner, etc…) these are thing that are important! We listened to their teaching as kids and they have helped us grow tremendously! We still need to listen to them….although we may not think it, they do know more than we do.

    VERSE 9
    They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

    This verse is kind of confusing so let me elaborate:

    If we do what our parents say and submit to them, it will be like a garland to grace our head. Its like a mark of honor or tribute of grace upon us! Our parent’s teaching, if obeyed, will also be like a chain to adorn our neck. Like a beautiful necklace to improve our appearance. It is obvious that God is telling us that if we obey our parents, IT REALLY IS A BEAUTIFUL THING!!!!

  32. Allen says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    This verse hit me especially hard for just last night I got in a fight with my mom and we pretty much didn’t talk at all until about 2 hours ago. Though this whole passage also helped me because at San Juan Hills we are short on legit Christians and being on X-Country everyday I am surrounded my non-Christians who are always talking about unwholesome things. I’ve been getting better at not following in their ways but a lot of times I find myself still participating in their games and sinful ways. I need to continue to pray that God will help me be strong and to be an example of Him through my words, thoughts, and actions.

  33. Matt Lawler says:

    32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    well this ones a no-brainer…pretty self explanatory

    by the way, who is saying this?
    26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-

    27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

  34. Kelsey says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
    9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

    These verses especially stand out to me because i do not get along parents and i need to keep reminding myself that God wants me to honor them. By honoring them, i am honoring him. I need to get that through my head. haha. i have noticed our relationship f=growing stronger, i just need to make sure i keep heading forward.

  35. it's Daniel Yo! says:

    yess! proverbs!

    22 “How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?

    This verse shows exactly how our society is today. It’s easy just to “get by” and not care, in fact it’s actually cool (and a lot more fun). But as Christians we are called to live lves worthy of the calling we haved recieved. Instead we live for Christ who gives more that just “fun” and “populrity” he givesus joy and eternal salvation.

  36. Stephanie says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    Fearing Yahweh is extremely vital to the christian life. God has the power to crush both body and soul. This fear isn’t respect or awe… its the same word phobia comes from. A deep fear, not respect. God is the only one holding this world together. Without Him, we can not accomplish anything.

    Fool is the word commonly used to describe the non-christian, those who don’t obey Gods word and do what they want to do. The fool doesn’t want to be disciplined because it would mean that there is something wrong with them, and they wouldn’t like that to be the truth.

    Us as Christians, need to love wisdom and discipline! Discipline is an amazingly vital part of Christianity, us being disciplined constantly and knowing what is right and wrong and doing what God says is a great way to train yourself for righteousness. Being wise is important because the wise are the ones who know Gods word in and out and can pull up verses in an instant and is ready to obey and apply Gods word immediately.

    We should strive to be wise and disciplined by fearing Yahweh, our Lord and creator!

  37. kelly says:

    I enjoy these verses:
    ” 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
    4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-”

    The word prudent means to have care or thought of the future. I like this word because
    it is clear that our minds need to be set on the future, instead of obsess over the present.
    Heaven will be more glorious than now, so we must live like we are looking forward to it.

  38. Ashlyn Vidal says:

    woot woot for proverbs!

    32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    These last two verse really stood out to me….there are some big words in these two verses, yet their meaning is straight forward and simple….When we allow ourselves to be tempted by the foolish or just wallow around in sin, of course we are going to get pulled in! Instead, when we spot something that could cause us to stumble we should run the opposite way! By doing that we are listening to Christ and obeying His commands! When we practice this God will provide us with safty, protection ect.

    1 Corinthians 2:9
    No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.

  39. Ella :) says:

    I can’t really choose a verse to reflect on, because everything in the book of proverbs is awesome, so much wisdom it holds you can’t just choose one thing. This is jsut saying that we are fools if we don’t commit to Christ we need to believe and if we don;t he may harden our hearts and we will never see him again. :0

  40. pAyToN :] says:

    22 “How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?

    I like this verse because it is so funny how we live in our sins and keep doing the little things, thinking we’ll get by. But we need to wake up and smell the roses and realize that God loved all of us and we too need to love everyone and not those we like and we need to stop doing evil and cling to what is good, like what it says in Romans 12:9 :]
    and like in verse:

    18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!

    we live in our sin thinking its all good when really its not :]

  41. Diana says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    This has got to be one of my favorite verses. It’s very true how fools hate wisdom and discipline. Fools make fun of and despise the successful people, the smart people, and the determined people. Being disciplined in any and all areas of your life is pleasing to God when it’s done in accordance with His word, but the others hate it that we have the self control and the determination to stay that way. We should fear the Lord always, and quiet our hearts to further our wisdom, as well as stay disciplined the way God wants us to. It doesn’t matter what the fools think of us!

  42. Rebekah Foreman says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

    9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

    10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

    I LOVE PROVERBS!!! We studied all of last year at my little private school Stoneybrooke.
    Fools hate following rules and do not like the wisdom and discipline of God. We need to take in wisdom and discipline our selves to please God and serve Him. We need to listen for our father’s and do as they say but, follow your moms teachings. We need to be obedient to our parents for the lord.We will get a prize in Heaven if we honor this. If we have a sinful friend we need to seperate ourselves and not fall into temptation.
    GOD BLESS <BEKA

    4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-

    The book of Proverbs is for us! It is directed towards young people that are still learning from their parents (v. 8) and are in desperate need of Godly wisdom. It would be so foolish of us to not fully comprehend and practice the ways of God written in this book because now is the time that it will be most effective! In the same way, if we reject wisdom; then in a way we are rejecting God, because He is the only one who is truely wise. So as we read through Proverbs; lets focus on the Word and let all destractions fade, so that we can enjoy the full blessings in living in Godly wisdom.

  44. Ahh, Proverbs!

    1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
    2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;

    It really hit me how Solomon just started out his book…. “for attaining wisdom and discipline…for understanding words of insight” I think is super important to look at proverbs with that same mindset! To be seeking God in our reading, which will lead us to acquire wisdom and discipline which can only come from Him. Lets be in this book everyday; gleaning wisdom and understanding from probably the wisest man to walk the face of the earth :)

  45. it's Daniel Yo's Dad. says:

    This discribes everyone (we are all sinful and should fear God’s wrath).
    27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

    28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.

    29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
    30
    since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,

    31They will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

    32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

  46. Bethany Gonzales says:

    16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
    Our closest friends in life should always be Christians. Bobby’s pretty much explained that many times, and yet, I’m always reminded when I feel I get too close. Thank you Jesus! They will lead you into sin, and God HATES sin. Sure, of course have non-Christian friends but don’t be their best friend. They will influence you….but the same goes for the other way around! You may be that person’s only Christian influence and God probably is using you! God uses us in many ways and that’s just one of them…and hey, it could just be your spiritual gift!, talking to others about Christ. I’m lov’n where this is going. And continue to pray for these friends that it is God’s will that they be saved. So, in conclusion, stay friends but not best friend. :D

  47. Nelson & Leah says:

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    This to me is a promise for the future and something we can have faith in. Bobby is this Solomon talking or is it God? I know it is through Solomon. Thanks

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    We all must fear the Lord our God. Our Lord is all-powerful and has the power to do anything, so we should be terrified.

  48. zach senger says:

    PROVERBS YAYAYAYY!!!!!!
    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    I really like this verse cause it is so powerful. It tells us that we can not get knowledge without fearing the Lord. This is so good to see to make sure that we truyl do fear the Lord for who he truly is the God that can do whatever he wants to us. We need to fear the Lord to even start to get knowledge!!!

  49. It's Daniel Yo's friend jordan anderson says:

    This is an amazing proverb full of so many things to talk about. First off…

    Verse 7. We should be soaking up every piece of wisdom we can, and this includes the Bible. Reading the Bible daily will fill you with knowledge, and also teach you to fear the Lord, which according to the Scriptures, is the beginning of knowledge!

    Verses 8 and 9 tell us to be respecting our parents, and to obey them. This is a command from the Lord! We need to be honoring them and doing what they ask, not only because it is the right thing to do, but because the Lord COMMANDS it.

    Verses 10 and 11. These verses talk about temptation. We are tempted daily with things around us. The Lord tells us not to give into them! Again, being in the word daily, and talking to him are two huge things that will help us with that.

    Verses 27-33 describe us as the sinners that we are. We all fall into sin, but you know what…God will forgive us! To the non Christians, they come to the Lord in the storms of life, when they are face down in the dirt. But the Lord will not answer them, he will not satisfy them or help them. They are left alone. VERSE 33 “but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” This is a promise you guys! A promise that God will be there for us in times of struggle, He will protect us from harm, and he will keep us safe! He have such an amazing God who deserves ALL PRAISEEEEE!!!

    (:

  50. DVworkum says:

    ok I was like now how did we get to proverbs from Luke 1 haha…

    So verse 33 kaboom! If we fear God and do what he says we will be spiritualy safe. If the folish man doesn’t listen to God and dies, then the oposite happends to the wise man. We are alive in Christ. Praise the Lord, and fear him for he is powerful and holy. Let’s pray that we do not fall astray and pray we are wise. It may not be wise in mans eyes to follow the Lord but it is truly wise in the eyes of the Lord and he is who we seek.

  51. laura j says:

    7″The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but for fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

    fearing God is something that leads people to repentance. that’s important. I liked this verse too because people who don’t seek God’s wisdom and don’t discipline themselves should mostly fear God.

  52. Bobby Blakey says:

    Hey Matt Lawler! Great to see you on here my friend!

    In verse 26 “wisdom” is laughing. But this is really a personification from God’s perspective. Sometimes in the book of Proverbs Solomon writes like wisdom is talking. But really this is what God will do to those who reject him. The same reaction is attributed to God in Psalm 2:4. Right now God is reaching out to all, but for those who reject him it will not be pretty. This is why we need to fear the Lord!

  53. Dan Lauder says:

    23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.

    We need to heed the Lord’s correction and be quick to admit it when we blow it. We need to confess it right away and ask forgiveness from God and others whom we’ve wronged. If God disiplines us we need to take it maturely, repent, learn from the mistake and move on. The question is not whether we will sin, but how we respond when we do sin.

  54. Brad says:

    Nelson & Leah: Just look at the beginning of the quote, it says who is talking in verse 20. In this book “Wisdom” is personified. So verse 33 is said by the character of Wisdom.

    Verse 7 reminds me of a cross-reference in Pastor Bobby’s sermon:

    Is. 66

    “This is the one I esteem:
    he who is humble and contrite in spirit,
    and trembles at my word.

    Fear and trembling before God only happen when we stop comparing ourselves to others and start comparing ourselves to a perfect God!

  55. 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    This is an awesome promise! If we heed wisdom, this chapter says we will have many benefits and when I got to the end and read these three I’m definitely wanting to enjoy all these blessings. It’s not easy. The challenge is clearly that we have to be teachable which requires fearing the Lord. If we are going to grow in wisdom and reap these benefits we have to have a low view of ourselves and our opinions and a big view of God and His wisdom. This made me think of how in Bobby’s sermon at True North this weekend when he said Mary’s song expressed the heart that makes less of me and more of Him.

  56. Curtis says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    i agree with what brad said… when we compare ourselves to other sinners who are do “worse” sins then us, we tend to ignore and minimize our fear of God… i liked the way pastor mike put it, that we are better than then, but we are no better off. we’re all sinners and should live in fear of God.

  57. Jo§h says:

    22 “How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?

  58. Hannah says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    I really love this verse, cause it shows how much we have to think and act to really invest in our relationship with Chirst. And how Brad was saying, we can’t compare ourselves to other sinners, cause we are all “equal” sinners and HAVE to fear the Lord.

  59. Ryan Damato says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    I love this book. I especially love verse 7. It starts this whole book off so well. If you don’t have this fear, the rest of these chapters won’t really make a whole lot of sense. Discipline hurts but if I truly fear the Lord, I am going to accept the due punishment that I get here on earth to set me straight and clean me up so that I can continue on in my sanctification. God desires holiness and a lot of times, the discipline we receive from the God who loves us is done for our own holiness.

  60. Brick-E says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    When we read the Bible God is talking to us in His own WORDS!! The Bible is an instruction manual on how to live your life. God gives us scripture to show us how we can become better Christians. Fools however, tend to think that their perfect in every way… which is WRONG!!! Only through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior could we ever have a chance of receiving eternal life.

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.

    What a promise!!!! God promises us that He will protect us and keep us safe. God is the creator of all things, what else should we fear? Gods breath alone can give a man life, and Gods hand alone can wipe out an entire nation. Thats powerful stuff!!!

  61. Alison R says:

    3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
    4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-
    5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-

    Proverbs is for EVERYBODY! I loveee this. The new Christian and the person who’s been a Christian their whole life- this book will help you grow stronger in your faith, if you let it.
    …and wow that kinda sounded like an advertisement hahaha.

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    This really stood out to me. Discipline is nessecary when we do something wrong, and us being mad about it is NOT the way to make changes in our lives. We need to understand that discipline and advice are for our own good, and its foolish to get angry about it.

  62. Its daniel yo's friend jordan anderson's friend emily mayers :) says:

    I’m so excited that we’re reading ‘the book of wisdom’ Proverbs!

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    This verse is so powerful in itself! Fearing the Lord IS how we gain wisdom. I think it adds a whole new level to feeling bad about sins and wanting to repent if when we fear the Lord and it makes us want to keep his commands. It also points out the fools! Like when people say that ‘ignorance is bliss’, the fools don’t even want to gain understanding and wisdom about their Maker or want to have discipline (obey His commands).

  63. Max says:

    32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

    Lazyness. That can be hard sometimes. You know, like when your done with your homework, and your bored. What would you do? Would you go watch TV or play videogames? Would we go on Facebook? It says here that the complacency of fools will destroy them. Instead of not doing anything productive, let’s read the Bible or do something good. So instead of wasting or time, which is plainly wrong according to this verse, let’s do somwthing good and productive.

  64. Crystal C says:

    8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching

    oooh proverbs is a great book. It has a lot of wise sayings that we should apply to our lives. I think its awesome how solomon asked for wisdom instead of anyting else. He made a good choice..hehe. A while ago at dinner my parents would always read some verses from proverbs and have us try to figure out what it meant. It was fun. Anyways…This verse is very important. We should be listening to what our parents say and obeying them no matter what they say. Even if what they tell us seems lame we still need to listen to them.

  65. Kt Melrose says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    Wow this is so true, fearing the Lord makes us strive to know the Lord better. Its fear that draws us to make the better choice and fear that makes us stay in line. Once we start fearing, we can start to understand the Lord. 10(-14) My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. It is sometimes so hard to resist sin and people will twist it around to make it sound good, but we need to never give in (1 Corinthians 10:13) and to also know the distinct line between good and evil. SO many times does God warn us not to fall in temptation (…Matthew 6:13, 26:41, Luke 22:40 nad many more…). We have been warned so don’t harmful temptation cross your mind twice!

  66. Evan McKee says:

    7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

    I love this verse. if we truly do fear God, we will want to be in his word because we will be afraid of what will happen to us if we aren’t reading it. We should fear wandering away from God because he has the power to judge us. This verse relates to verses 29-33

    29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,

    30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,

    31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

    32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

    33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

    So many people today go on living without thinking about where they are leading themselves, and we need to let them know what will happen to them if they continue in the same direction.

  67. michelle:) says:

    10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

    we need to be on the look out for those who claim to be christians….we need to read Gods word and gain wisdom so that we can bear spiritual fruits and acknowledge Gods commands!
    by reading and growing daily, we grow stronger.the stronger we get, the harder it is to break the faith.its like when you parents tell you to eat your veggies.day by day, if you eat your veggies, you grow stronger….some veggies give you better eye sight like carrots, and some veggies just make you an all around healthy person.the bible is like vegetables.some verses strongly convict us and the holy spirit works in us and we become stronger and fear the Lord more and more!some verses give us more wisdom…

    yeah that was kind of a wierd example…it sounded better in my head then what i wrote:)

    but we need to realize how important it is to be prayer warriors, to be bible readers, to be evangelizers, to be wise and seek Gods will.just the thought that 80% of highschoolers and college students lose their faith throught the years at school should encourage us to keep building our faith and should encourage us to watch out for those who seek to bring us down
