Psalm 51

Psalm 51

Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

51:1 Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
build up the walls of Jerusalem;
19 then will you delight in right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on your altar. (ESV)

  1. Derek Brower 2010 says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

This verse is so awesome in the way that we should always be seeking a pure heart in front of the Lord at all times. How can we expect to ascend His holy hill while worshiping if we have sin on our hands and in our hearts?? Just look at Psalm 24:3-5

Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.

  2. Matt Lawler says:

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise

Sacrifice of animals and such is no longer necesarry since Jesus was the final sacrifice, God can only accept us if we humble ourselves and repent of our sin. Only when living my life for God do i truly feel joy, being separated from Him because of sin is a very miserable place.

  3. Dave Hosford praying for revival before He comes says:

Ps 51:1-4 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

AMEN! Only when we have this humble attitude beofre the cross of Jesus will He answer our prayer for a pure heart!

  4. Ben Blakey says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

This verse stood out to me. David does not ask God to forgive him based upon his own repentance or righteousness; he asks for forgiveness based on the character of God. The same is true for me; the only reason I can ask for forgiveness is because God is a God of unfailing love and great compassion.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

I also love that David asks for more than forgiveness. He does not only ask God to not remember his sin, he asks for a pure heart. That’s more than a desire to be forgiven, it’s a desire for change. That needs to be my attitude in times of repentance.

    Goodmorning . . .

    I read . . .

    Psalm 51 . . .

“1. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.”

This verse is a cry of help for God to cut David slack and for God to have MERCY on him. David’s saying, cut me slack and forgive me because you have never ending love. Jesus your great compassion will blot out my transgressions. (sin, commiting wrong.) This whole chapter is David crying out to his Heavenly Father and asking that God still keep him on this earth. David says he still wants to do good, and bring other people to God. This is how I need to be. Whenever I sin, I need to be CRYING to my Father and plead that He still keep me on this earth. God has any and EVERY power. Meaning, He put me on this earth, and He can take me off at any moment. Yes, it might be something scary to think about for some, but in reality we are only going HOME. =)

  6. Beth Lauder says:

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

David penned this psalm after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and murder against Uriah. It is a humble psalm that is a prayer for forgiveness and cleansing. David has true repentance for his sin. He rightly responds to Nathan’s rebuke by acknowledging his sin, confessing it, grieving how he has missed the mark, and then he asks God to forgive and cleanse him and guide him toward righteous living. As I was reading Psalm 51 I was convicted about my response to my own sin. Oftentimes I can try to justify my sin or make excuses for it. As Pastor Mike recently said from the pulpit, “There may be an explanation for your sin, but there is never an excuse for it.” My prayer today is that I will immediately recognize my sin and be grieved by it. I pray that I will repent from my sin by confessing it to God and then staying as far away from any temptation to commit that sin again. Thank You, God, that when we approach You with a humble and contrite heart that You forgive us immediately and completely. You are amazing!

  7. What a humbling psalm of repentance this is! I am encouraged and convicted by it as I reflect on my personal response to my own sin and how sometimes I am casual or haughty about it but I want a broken heart like David exemplifies here.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

This verse stood out to me because David was experiencing total collapse under the guilt of his sin. I remember Pastor Mike saying that we need to “let guilt do it’s job.” I shouldn’t just wallow in guilt, feeling bad. When I am convicted I need to quickly acknowledge my sin as sin and repent of it before the Lord, ready to obey him. Thank you Lord for Your forgiving and restoring me with your love and joy.

  8. Mike says:

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

God takes sin very personally. Whatever we do, and whoever we hurt here on earth, He views our sin as direct rebellion against Him. If we do not have a proper view of our sin, we will not see our dire need for forgiveness. We may become comfortable with our sin, but God never is. He requires a repentant heart – a heart that sees sin for what it is and is broken by the offense it causes God. I need to view any sin in my life as a big deal to God, and come to Him with a true desire for repentance and a willingness to live according to His will.

  9. kelly causky says:

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

When we sin it is directly against God. This truth should bring us guilt and a broken heart about the wrong we do. Sin is not something we can do casually and then forget about it without feeling bad. Guilt brings repentance.

  10. Steffen Eriksen says:

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

If you are a Christian, look back to the point in your life when you got saved. Right when a person gets saved their is such an immense amount of joy in them. And David id asking God to restore to him the joy of salvation, the excitement he experienced upon first being saved. And he asks, too, for a willing spirit to sustain him. He wants to be willing and ready to do whatever God wants him to do. I need to cry out to God for the joy I had when I first got saved, and going along with what I had as first becoming a Christian, I also need to love Christ as my first love, and love Him not only as much as I did then but even more than I loved Him before. And I need to seek a willing spirit, that I would have the heretoserve mentality, and not only be ready for opportunities when they come my way but that I am looking for ways to serve.

  11. Nicholas Bonetto says:

4 “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.”

When I sin against a neighbor, I not only sin against him but also against God. Everything I do will ultimatley face God, good or bad. God does not take sin lightly, sin is worthy of eternal destruction. So when I sin against a neighbor and, ultimatley, God, I have definetly done wrong in God’s sight.

  12. Elise says:

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

What an amazing Psalm! It talks about the need for repentance, and how repentance and faith is what God demands from us before he will wash away our sin. In these verses, David first asks God to restore the joy of salvation. I remember what it was like when I first became a Christian- I was filled with inexplicable joy. Like David, I need to be constantly praying to have that joy all the time. Then, David says he will teach sinners the way of God so that they will turn back to him (repent!). I’m praying that I can do this more often especially now that I’m back in school and have so many opportunities!

  13. Ian H. says:

1 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.”

David was one of God’s people. He was even called “a man after God’s own heart.” But was he perfect? By no means! As we can clearly see, he did some very bad things in his life. Why, then, was he still called a man “after God’s own heart”? Here in this Psalm we have the answer: he owned it. Although David was a terrible sinner just like everyone else, when he sinned, he realized what he had done and did not deny it. He acknowledged his sin to the Lord. And, as we see here, he had a genuinely contrite heart as he cries out for mercy.
I hope and pray that God will give me a humble, repentant heart that acknowledges sin and cries for mercy as well.

  14. hunter 2010 says:

    Ben and Steffen, great comments!

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

These verses remind me a lot about campus lunches. If I do not find joy in my salvation and have a willing spirit to continually obey God than how am I ready to teach? These verses remind the importance of living above reproach so that I will be ready to teach others and lead them to repentance and faith! 1Tim. 4:15-16

  15. Max says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

When Ben was talking about God’s love and judgement at one of the last beach nights, he talked about how God’s love is 100% and unfailing. god will judge all of us, but because of His amazing love for us, He sent Christ to take the penalty for what everyone did. So as Christian, God loves us no matter what. His great compassion will cover all of my transgressions. Just to think about that concept is pretty crazy. God is truly amazing and i’m very very grateful for His unfailing love!

  16. Nachooooooooooo says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

This is my prayer. That God renews my spirit and gives me a pure heart that thirsts for Him. A heart that desires to serve Him and bring Him glory.

  17. Alyssa K says:

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you

Not only does David ask for forgiveness, but he asks for the strength to not make the same mistakes again. He prays for a willing spirit so that in times of temptation to sin, he can be willing to turn away from it and remain sustained in the Lord. I need to remember this when dealing with temptation. The second verse also grabbed my attention because it made me picture David being an example to others by avoiding the same sin and therefore leading other sinners to Christ. I should keep in mind that in escaping sin I can also help others escape it too.

  18. P.J. says:

David is pouring out his heart to the Lord in all of these verses. He is distraught over his sin and you can easily feel his repentance throughout the whole chapter. David needs God’s mercy and grace greatly; he has learned from his sin and wants to guide transgressors in the way of righteousness (v.13).

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

Jesus told his disciples in the latter half of Mark 14:38 that “the spirit is willing but the body is weak.” David desires to have his spirit have a tremendous willingness so that the next time he is faced with sin he will be able to conquer his fleshly desires. I want to have this same desire, that at every time the sin of laziness, lust, or idolatry (or any other sin I deal with) faces me I can stand firm and look for the way out that is promised (1 Cor. 10:13). And in the first part of the verse I posted, David cries out to the Lord for a renewal of his joy. I have been desiring the same thing lately, because just as David realized, when we aren’t joyful of the grace that God has freely given us, we tend to sin more and lose our repentant mindset. Lord give me a willing spirit to conquer sin when it looks me in the eye and restore in me the joy of your gracious salvation!

  19. Lizzie Holt :D says:

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

For alot of people, this is how they felt when they were praying to God for salvation for the first time. Then they never really thought about how much they still needed to pray that everyday!! I know I have forgotten way more than I should and that my sin has been cast up to me often in the past couple of days, so now this will be a part of my daily prayer with God. But something you have to be careful with in praying the same thing over and over, is that you don’t just RECITE it, you MEAN it.

9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

When living through our everyday lives, we need to remember how much our sin hurts and angers God. In verse 9 is says “Hide your face from my sins…” The psalmist is recognizing how disgusting his sin is and wants God to turn away from it. But then he goes on to say “create in me a pure heart…and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” He doesn’t want God to only forgive him, he wants God to help him not sin again and to renew his vigor for living for the one and only God.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

Here the psalmist is asking for a willing spirit and God’s support so he can go evangelize. He has confidence that if God helps him, the sinners will listen and turn back to God. I want to have that kind of faith and trust. God help me to trust in you through good and bad situations and to always remember to praise you continually!!

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

God doesnt need blood sacrifice! Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice!! We no longer need to depend on our “good deeds” to get to heaven! Jesus made sure of that when He died on the cross. Saying we need to do good deeds to appease ourselves in God’s eyes is basically saying that Jesus dying was not enough. Now who wants to say that? I don’t! All God wants as a “sacrifice” is a “…broken and contrite heart…” He just wants us to be truly repentant and to want to follow Him and to strive for that every day and every hour, minute, and second. God, help me to live for you everyday and to focus on you and not myself!

  20. it's Daniel Yo! says:

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

David is really sad over his sin right here. He feels guilty because he knows that he messed up something special between him and God. I like these verses because David is praying that the joy that he had in God will come back to him. Because he values and enjoys the Lord’s presence

  21. Talk about repenting and I am always reminded of this Psalm because it is such a picture perfect example of what our attitudes should look like in repentance. David is contrite, broken and sorrowful over his transgression because as he says,

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

I want my repentance to be like this, I want to always see my sin in light of God’s holiness and know that it is against Him that I have sinned! I want my repentance to turn into a pleaful prayer for restoration and joy that can be found in the heart of the forgiven!

  22. j. watkins says:

man… David is one cool dude…

the extreme that he goes to in his repentance is just awesome, and a perfect example of how we should treat sin in our lives.

  23. Ashlyn--:) says:

6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts ; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

God doesnt wan tto see us suffer! he is always there for us and will forgive us when we ask! i desire to have Godly wisdom, to see what is right and wrong and choose the right thing :D

  24. kyle, the adventure begins september 8th! says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

“create in me a pure heart” stood out. This kinda reminds me of pursuit of holiness because David wants a pure heart and will be willing to repent and give up the evil desires that might have been in his heart. The application would be that I need to keep my heart pure and not be seeking the pleasures of this world because I’m going to have more pleasurable things in heaven if I will be pacient.

  25. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

I love this chapter. It shows me how I should act when I sin against God. I must be on my knees crying to God to have mercy on me.

  26. Trembling with fear from the almighty Lord, B says:

I feel like I’ve read this before…all well! It’s always good to read it over and over again! :D

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

David was making a point, that you can’t just offer a sacrifice to God asking for forgiveness and not really mean it with your whole heart. Your spirit should be broken and laid before God and that’s when He’ll except your forgiveness. It’s almost like David was predicting the future when you won’t have to offer sacrifices to ask God for forgiveness, because God will provide one for you. :) And that sacrifice is living today and will take us away! MARANATHA! :D

  27. Jessica K says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

It amazes me how pure David’s confession is despite his sin. He is genuine in every word and his pasion for God shows. His love for God is an inspiration. Even great men like David struggled with sin and it is humbling to know sin is something that unifies all men. I need to ask for repentance with a sincere heart like David everytime I sin. It is so important to ask God to wash away my sins because without Him I am nothing. I want His Holy Spirit to live in me forever. The restoration of joy is also important. Joy is something I believe only comes from God. I think it also results from having a pure heart (verse 10). My strength in the Lord grows through my love and joy for Him. I am so thankful that God forgives butI need to try harder not to sin.

  28. Melissa Cox says:

This is one of my favorite Psalms. When David is confronted with his sin, he immediately repents. His heart is soft and he doesn’t try to make excuses to make himself look better.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

God would rather us have truly broken hearts and a sorrow for our sin INWARDLY than an outward show of sorrow or obedience. We need to make sure our hearts are truly repentant.

  29. Brennan says:

5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

We have always been sinful and this is a misunderstanding that many people I talk to dont believe. They dont believe this verse cause it proves that since we are sinful we are seperate from God and if we are seperate from God there has to be a middle man which is Jesus Christ. People dont want to believe that because then they cant live the life they want knowing they are going to Hell but have to live a life thriving after what is right so God may see us as perfect through Jesus. Also people dont want to believe this because they want God to accept them for who they are and let them live their own life. But as this verse says even from when we were concieved we were sinful.

  30. Dominic S says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

I love these verses because it reminds me of Pastor Bobby’s beach night sermon on God’s mercy, and it is really humbling to think about how we are so unworthy of God’s grace, but his love never leaves us. His unfailing love doesn’t mean he loves everyone for who they are, but instead he forgives all of our sins, which is the greatest love of all. God’s mercy is truly amazing.

  31. PaYtOn :D says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

WOW! David really knows how to write. He shows that he is a sinner and he wants to be pure before God. I too pray that God will create a steadfast spirit within me. :]

***THANK YOU JESUS FOR LOVING ME!!!***

  32. Dan Lauder says:

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

This is the kind of response God is looking for when people sin. Not a long line of excuses or explanations, but confession. David recognizes his offense against God and admits it. He says God is justified for judgement against him and does not try to plea his case. I need this same attitude before God when I sin. Confession and repentance, not excuses!

  33. Christopher Eriksen says:

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

This really shows how David delights in God’s presence. Up in verse 4, David says against you only have I sinned because ultimately sin is rebellion against God and David feels really bad about it, so bad in fact that his bones feel crushed. And then when David repents, he not only asks for forgiveness but he also asks for a pure heart and a steadfast spirit so that he can praise God and proclaim Him to others. And here in verse 12 David asks God to restore the joy of God’s salvation, because he delights in God and he knows that he is separated from God when he is in sin. I pray that God will produce a real delighting in Him like David had, where I will truly value the relationship I have with God above all else. This will result in me being truly broken over sin because I know it offends God and desire to be pure so that I will glorify Him.

  34. Eric Walker says:

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

This entire psalm is true and legit repentance. This is how to pray! David his pouring his heart out to God and asking for forgiveness. This should be how we pray when we ask for forgiveness. This entire psalm is LEGIT!!!

  35. Tanner says:

I like verse 2,”Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”

I like this verse because its tells what I ask every day. I am far from perfect and I sin daily I try not to but since I am imperfect I sin. I ask GOD to forgive me and HE does again and again because HE is love and HE will save anyone who repents and has faith in HIM. I am so thankful for this love that is shown to us.

  36. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge

This Psalm was pretty awesome! By reading this Psalm, and how David confesses sin it really made me think of how important confessing sin is and how sin looks to God. We all know that sin is bad, and everyone sins. But in the world when non Christians sin, it is not a bad thing, and they just accept even the most common sins. Of course sins like murdering and stealing look bad, but not common ones like gossip, lying, and dishonoring parents don’t look as bad to them. But regardless, as Christians, we know clear rights and wrongs, but sometimes we may sin in front of non Christians, and we know that God hates that, especially when we are trying to glorify Him, and later on, we feel the conviction. And even though this is a pretty simple concept, I still can struggle with this. So when I am around non Christians, especially during this upcomming school year, i will not do common sins, and not compromise with this world!

  37. ELLA says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

This verse just stood out, just saying that i need God to help me have a pure heart and the right spirit.
15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

I love this one too, “open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.” thats a reminder that everything I say have to glorify GOD.

  38. Matt Crichton ((2010)) says:

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

When I read this verse I wondered what hyssop was…it sounded familair so I looked it up in the Bible. It is also found in Exodus 12: 22. It was a plant that they dipped in blood and painted the doorposts. This kept the angel of death from entering the house. (the Passover) It is only by blood that we can become clean. Jesus’ blood shed on the cross for our sins. It washes our sins away and makes our hearts pure again. MARANATHA

  39. Austin 2010 says:

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

Only God can forgive our sin and He is our only way to salvation. I don’t live my life to serve man but only my Lord. Lord cleanse me and make me clean

  40. Sarah G.! says:

8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

David is feeling not only guilty for his sin but also shame. He fears God and sees him as holy and perfect who cannot be in the presence of sin. I love how the psalmists all show awe and reverence for God in each psalm that we read! David has really expressed true emotion over sins against God and relies on Him to restore his soul. It was a marvelous reminder for me of how my sin should cause me to fear the Lord more and to take it more seriously. :D

  41. Spencer Camp says:

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

This is exactly what David is doing. Coming before God, contrite, broken over his sins, acknowledging his transgressions, and asking God for redemption. This is a great example of what a Christian should do everyday: get sad over sin. Sin is horrible! Since no one is perfect a Christian should daily acknowledge guilt over sin. God, forgive me of the sins I daily commit. Blot out my transgressions, consider not my folly. And Lord would I daily acknowledge your holiness in comparison to I. Forgive me of my sins for I am unclean before you.

  42. Trevor hosford says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
I really like this verse because it shows the kind of mindset that I need to have at all times, a mindset of allways having a more pure heart and never being satisfied with how pure I am. I need to always strive to be better then I am the day before

Sorry I havnt been on sotd lately, I have been really lazy, well c u all soon at true north

  43. Kelsey says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

This is an awesome prayer and I need to remember this. The Lord will wash away all our sins, we just have to ask. How amazing is this?! We do not deserve this. We deserve to be cast into Hell for eternity, but he has saved us from that brutal consequence. Instead we are given a pure heart, if we ask, and with a pure heart we are allowed in his presence. Not only are we allowed, but Jesus will go and prepare a place for us to stay there for eternity! How awesome! He is so merciful and awesome. All we need to do is repent and have faith.

  44. Murphy Danahy says:

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

GOD is able to be the KING and JUDGE because he is the only one without sin. David says it so well when he says that his sin was evil in his sight and therefore he is completely justified when he is judge.

  45. Nathan Ortiz says:

Sorry I havent been on here for a week, my family and i went on a road trip up through Big Sur and up to San Francisco and then some other places and looked at colleges. Unfortunately i did not have any access to a computer but i did have access to my Bible =] I’m glad to be back home and i’m ready to serve!

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
This is so awesome! i need to be like David and not only ask for forgiveness but i need to ask for a pure heart so i can set an example for others who do not know christ.

  46. Michelle [Slave for Christ] 2010 says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

Wow! I need to make sure i am looking out for temptations that cause me to stumble in my faith! When i sin, i am lying and i am disobeying Gods commands! I know for a fact that i will never understand how i could have such a merciful God when i have sinned against him so much. He is so loving and i cannot even grasp it! When i think of all of the times ive sinned…well i cant, but i know i sin a lot, and i need to clear that and ask God to give me the strength to fight off temptation because i want to live my life pleasing to God and not to satan! When i am tempted, i want to fight it off, and do what is right! God has the power to do anything, and i know that with Him, i can overcome temptations that try to cause me to stumble! God is all powerful and i am starting right now…i am going to start praying every day for God to help me gain strenghth in the battle we call life! I want to live my life pleasing to God, and i cant do that without His help!

    MARANATHA!

  47. Riley Hancock (back from camping) says:

6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts ; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

God help me to desire your truth more and more everyday teach me what you now so I may pass it on to others.

  48. Chelseaaaaa says:

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Lord, I pray that You search my heart and make my sins known to me so that i may confess them and You may cleanse me. I want to be made as much like You as possible. Help me to have Your light radiate through my life and help me to witness to those around me. Help me to bring You glory in every aspect of my life, whether it be work or rest.

  49. Allie Moorefield(: says:

WOW! THis psalm is amazing! I wrote it in sharpie on my notes. PSALM 51! This psalm all these verses should be recited daily. Sometimes I take advantage of God’s unfailing love. I forget how horrible and horrific sin is and how it hurts God. I am disobeying, lying, and offending God every time i sin. Which is like every 10 minutes! WIth my thoughts, my actions, the words that come out of my mouth. I need God’s help and without it I would be burning in Hell. I need to truly repent my sins to the Lord and ask for His forgiveness, which i can do through this psalm. This psalm is amazing and I am going to highlight, write it down, and memorize this! I need to be truly sorry and repent and care about my sins and how it offends God!

  50. Kelsey Collins says:

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
I really liked this verse because it states somthing very clearly. I can teach somone about what Jesus has done for us, but when that somone realizes that, that is all in Gods power. I may of told them about Jesus but other than that God did it all! he did the work in their hearts to make them turn to repentance and faith! Its all in Gods hands and I have to give it up to him and pray constantly.

  51. Karsten Klein says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

God has such great compassion and love that no matter what, if you repent then he will forgive you of your sins. When i hear verses like this it makes me feel so lucky thati have a loving god that will always forgive me if i sin.

  52. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me

Only those who have pure hearts will be able to stand in the Lords holy place. I pray that I to have a pure and clean heart that is not blackened by my sins. I want be able to stand before God with a renewed and clean heart when I meet Him.

  53. lauren gouddgee says:

    heeellaaa!
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.—This is my prayer right now because I know my heart hasnt been where I know it needs to be! I am asking God to make me a new heart and that i can change my heart so that I may live the way that God wants me to live. Lord give me a pure heart where I may want to be a loyal slave to you and that your will can be done!

stoked for church! praying for a Revival to happen at Dana Hills Highschool and every other school!! :D

  54. Alison says:

I love this entire Psalm! I think its so interesting how this is coming from a man who just committed adultery and then murdered a man, and at the same time where he is with God is where I’ve been so many times before- realizing how sinful I am and just begging for forgiveness. It further emphasizes how sin is sin, big or small, evident or secret, and we need forgiveness from all of it. Praise God for His love, mercy, and forgiveness!!

  55. Mady is praying for a Revival!!!! says:

Psalm 51:4 “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.”

David has just committed adultery and then killed the husband of the woman he committed adultery with! Yet he knows the person who he truly sinned against, and the person who he really wronged was God! I need to remember the person I am really sinning against when I sin! Especially when I can be impatient with my little sister, or disrespectful to my parents. I know how badly it hurts them, but what I really need to understand is how I am hurting God, and how much he is disgusted by my sinning.

  56. Katie Slusher says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

I’m convicted by the humility of David as he comes before the Lord in confession. Our natural response to correction is to ignore and become defensive, however David fully recognizes his sin before the Lord. I pray that my response to correction is the same, that I have a teachable heart, begging God to make it pure.

  57. billy morris says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

I like this verse because I need to realize how much I need Gods mercy. Every time I sin, I displease God but becasue he is so merciful, he forgives me. Also, he does have unfailing love, and I need to remember that. Last, he has such great compassion. He died on the cross for our sins so hat we wouldn’t have to suffer in hell, and that is great.

  58. Encouraging to read all your comments as they come in throughout the day!

6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts ; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

God doesn’t just desire that we stop the actions of sin…but that we really have his truth in our hearts. Notice the contrast between being born in sin…and then when we are born again and have the Holy Spirit living within us. Even as Christians we are battling between a heart that is a cesspool of wickedness and then being transformed by God’s truth…For me, this is a great motivation to get into the Bible every day to guard against indwelling sin… It reminds me of another psalm:

Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

  59. Rebekah Foreman says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

This verse stuck out to me. As I am having a hard time right now in my life with my soccer coach. I need to have a pure heart and just always know God is always behind me in everything and there for me. I need to have a good spirit and trust God in all I do. I pray that I will have a good heart and have a good spirit.

  60. Jackson Dahl says:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

This entire Psalm is about David’s brokenness over his sin of adultery, which is such a great model of how I need to be over my sin.. David was extremely righteous, and even when he sinned once he is completely wrecked by it and begs God for mercy.. yet I sin much more frequently and I just say something like “God, please forgive me for X i’m really sorry.” I need to be absolutely BROKEN over my sin, and falling on my knees before God and asking for mercy.. he deserves nothing less.

  61. Shane McCuistion 2010 says:

15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

The 1st thing that I thought of after reading this verse was what if the only thing that I ever used my mouth for was for praising God. Even though I don’t cuss, I should still think about how i use my tongue, because there are plenty of times that I yell and use my tongue for worthless things. I should use my tongue way more often to preach God’s word to others.

  62. Mark says:

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

When we offer our sins and transgressions up to God, he will cleanse us from them. The problem is admitting them in the first place. I definately can work on this. I need to be realizing my sin and confronting myself about it before anyone else should have to. Then ask God to forgive me and He will cleanse me everytime!!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!

  63. Evan McKee says:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

This is what I should pray for all the time. This reminded me of how we can’t make our hearts pure and repent just by trying to, but we should pray for God to help us when we are trying to repent as David does in this verse and ask for help from others instead of trying to tackle obstacles on our own.

  64. josh senger says:

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

when i saw this verse i started thinking about how i dont take sin nearly as seriously as i should. i try to fight my sinful desires as much as i can but when i think about what he just said here”his sins are always before him”, he is always thinking about his sins. i need to be so afraid of how much God sins, and be striving harder and harder because of the love i have for my savior

  65. Laura Johnson says:

4 Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

I like how this verse said “against you, you only, have I sinned” because we may tell someone a lie or not respect our parents but we aren’t just lying or not showing respect but were sinning against God the one who is Holy, loving and just.

  66. Sara L. says:

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

This reminds me of the line “Break my heart for what breaks yours”….I am a sinner….every sin should break my heart. This whole psalm, and especially this verse, is like a model of how I should feel when I’m confessing my sins to God.

  67. Jenae (= says:

This guy, David, is someone who seems truly sorry for his sins. He is deeply hurt from it because it hurt God. I pray that i will have that kind of response when i sin!

  68. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 51

How awesome is the faithfulness of God? Even in David’s darkest hour the Lord sent Nathan to convict him of his sin. God rescued David from his sin and suffering bringing him to repentance. When we fall victim to sin in our lives we need to run to God in prayer like David’s example here. God’s Glory is revealed thru mercy and grace that He extends to His people. This Psalm reminds us all that no matter how unworthy we think we are God’s grace and mercy are greater still.

1st Tim 1:16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

2nd Samuel 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.
