1 John 2

Christ Our Advocate

2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

The New Commandment

Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

12 I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children,
because you know the Father.
14 I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

Do Not Love the World

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Warning Concerning Antichrists

18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.

26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

Children of God

28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. (ESV)

i love love love love love this verse!!

its just like when we all got baptized, we had to meet with bobby and explain what repentance is.and part of it was doing a 180 and turning away from them, and obeying his commands fully….
Jesus did such a loving thing on that cross for us, lets give love back by obeying his commands!

    maranatha:)

    HAHA FIRST COMMENT!yesssssss

  2. Bobby Blakey says:

Ahh…one of the main tests in 1 John if we are a Christian or not is obedience.

3We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.

Obedience is expected. Kind of like homework is expected at school or chores are expected around the house. You wouldn’t be a student if you didn’t study. In the same way, you can’t be a Christ follower if you don’t follow Christ.

28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

For those of us who do obey Christ this is a great encouragement to keep doing so. We want to be ready to meet him when he comes. Let us all have confidence in his presence because we have been following his instructions. Maranatha!

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

sorry, i saw another great verse! wow, this is convicting.idols are a big part of our lives, and that is wrong!idols can range anywhere from a sport…like surfing, or a feeling, like people pleasing.God NEEDS to come first, and if we find that there is an idol in our lives, pray.pray that God will somehow mellow down that feeling, etc. and make it so that God comes before all things!and when God is on the top of your list, you are 100% in it for God, and knowing that is amazing.so pray.its a window to the soul, as pastor dale described it to me, and it is oh so true:)

1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

We would be dead men walking if it wasn’t for Jesus. He made the holy sacrifice for our sins. We owe our lives to him the least we can do to repay that debt is to follow all him commands and walk in him.

  5. Matthew Richards (from Cleveland) says:

WOW! Talk about straight to the point and convicting!!! I absolutely love 1 John and this passage does an unbelievable job of laying out the gospel and the legitimate type of sacrifice it takes to live fully for Christ.

6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

It doesn’t get any more straight forward than this. I absolutely love this verse because of how convicting and powerful it is. Like the old saying says, “You can’t claim to be a follower of Christ if you don’t FOLLOW Christ.” This verse reminds me daily that we are constantly supposed to be emulating the Son and everything he did. This is also a great verse to point out to people if they think they are “Christians” but their lives don’t reflect it! Let’s make sure we are following in Christ’s footsteps as well!! MARANATHA!

  6. Laura Gonzalez ;) says:

16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

This verse stood out to me because sometimes when i go through my day and look at what every one else has i start to want it than it starts to control my heart. Which is sad because i don’t even recognize it until the end of the day.

  7. Max says:

5But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

What a good verse. If we don’t know if someone is a christian or not, all we have do do, according to 1 John, is look at there actions. If they aren’t following what God commands us to do, then we aren’t christians. But if we do follow God’s instructions, were good. Another part of this verse says if we obey His commands, His love is complete in us. This kinda stumped me at first, but as i thought about it i think i have an idea about what John meant by that. It brought the verse that says “If you love me, you will do as i command” to my head. So I think John means that if you truly love Him, we show it with obedience. So by being obedient to God, we know that we fully love Him. But along with obedience, John tells us we are to live as Jesus did. I know it’s impossible lived without sin, but were supposed to do the best of our ability to keep away from sin. This is what God wants us to do. And that’s what we have to do.

  8. Rebekah Foreman says:

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
I totally love these verses it stuck out to me.
We would have no 2nd chance or many chances if it wasn’t for our Father sending his Son to sacrafice His body. Since He died for all of us we should as james said repay Him with obeying His commands and following in the light on the path. We need to obey God and turn your life around so that your obeying him in everything u say or do sdo that its honoring and glorifying Him.

  9. Cameron says:

6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

verse always hits me hard whenever I read. we as followers of Christ must walk as he did. Jesus was perfect; he commited no sin. we sin everyday, we can never be perfect. if we claim to live in Christ we must live a life like him. even if we cant be perfect we must strife to be like Christ. he is the ultimate spiritual example, he is the one who we should try to live like.though we cant be perfect, we shouldnt just give up and say ‘I’m gonna stop trying to fight sin because im never gonna be perfect.’ as Christians we want to do wha is right for the glory of God. we never will be made perfect, and we will all be judged for our sins on earth, but like it says in verse 2 Christ is the atonement for our sins. only through him can we join the Father in heaven and be saved from hell

  10. hunter says:

    Great comment Matt!

16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

As Christians we need to be recognizing sin and temptation when we see it; usually, Satan does a pretty good job of diguising sin so that appears to be an innocent action or something that might benefit us or make us feel good…we can not fall into his traps! Instead we need to listen and obey the Spirit of Truth which guides us in everything we do (John 15:26). All that Satan has to offer is worthless trash! We need to die to the desires of our sinnful hearts, and discipline ourselves to obey Christ, so that on the day of His return we will presented to Him with joy(Jude 24-25) ! MARANATHA!!!

  11. Haley Litz says:

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

These verses really stood out to me. I have talked to so many people who say they believe in Jesus, but don’t want to be Christians yet because, they want to wait till after college or whatever so they can live their lives how they want during the “fun part” of their lives. People say they will get serious about being a Christian after high school or college. That is worldly thinking. They love the world and want to live in it and be apart of it. The thing is, they don’t know if they will still be on this earth after high school or college, so they can “get serious” about being a Christian. In verse 17, it says that this world will pass away, so what’s the point of waiting to “get serious” about being a Christian? It always makes me so sad whenever I talk to people who say that, because they don’t know how much longer they will live. They just want to live for themselves. It says though, for encouragement, that those who obey the Father will live forever!

  12. anna:) says:

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

These verses also really stood out to me. These verses say things that are radically different to what the world thinks. The world is all about having and getting more. It is soo material and it is so easy to get wrapped up in. They think these things will make them happy forever, but they can’t. Loving material things shows that you don’t love God.
We need to make sure God is our first and only true love.
    (:

  13. Kyle Johnson (from San Diego) says:

17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever

This shows how nothing else matters except for our relationship with the Lord, being justified. As Christians we are not of this world, we have overcome this, we got to strain towards the ultimate goal and prize of Jesus calling us heavenward, that is something we need to always think of. Everything that we have in this world will pass away, so why worry about the things that are meaningless. We need to worry about God and His Word because they last forever.

  14. Natalieeeeee says:

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

Basically Hunter, Haley and Anna kinda took the words out of my mouth. But I just wanna say that I love these verses! Don’t love the world because everything in the world, all sinfulness isn’t from the father. Materialism is a huggeee thing.. especially with high schoolers.. but I love verse 17 the world and it’s desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever! I don’t know about you all but I want to live forever (: so we need to focus more on doing the will of our Father and not on material things in this world.. which will eventually pass away!!

  15. Mike says:

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

This verse has been pretty well covered, but I definitely agree with what has been said. In a society in which the one with the most toys wins and life is about pleasure, we as Christians need to take a step back from the pursuit of these things and see where our hearts are at. If we are chasing after the things of the world more than we value making sacrifices for Christ, then we need to realize that we are in danger of Hell. God has promised to take care of those who trust in Him, and we need to be confident that His plan for us is better than anything the world has to offer.

  16. Gabriel Voris says:

6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

This verse always hits me hard just as Cameron said. If we live in Christ we must live like he did. This is impossible because Christ lived a perfect life yet we sin every single day. This is why i’m so glad God sent His only Son down to earth to die on the cross so our sins may be forgiven. Even if we cant be exactly the way Christ was, we have to strive to be like Christ as much as possible and fight against sin and follow God’s command’s.

  17. Beth Lauder says:

9They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
This verse is very helpful when tackling the topic of “backsliding” in the Christian faith. I hear all the time people calling in to Christian radio stations and saying, “I just recently rededicated my life to the Lord because I had been backsliding for several years…” Yikes! Verse 9 clearly tells us that if someone is a part of our fellowship and then leaves to go off and live in the world that they were never Christians. This is a great biblical truth that we need to point to in order to refute the incorrect concept of backsliding. Once we are Christians we are always Christians and the fruit and obedience in our lives will reflect that truth.

  18. Luke Melrose!!!!!! says:

28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

We will be accountable for EVERYTHING we do!! So, like it says in this verse, we need to continue in Him….which means OBEY Him!! If we obey Him a and He will reward us in Heaven!! If all you do is sin…..then you will be accountable for every single little sin!! Bad news there! So obey God!!!!!

  19. 15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

This verse commands us not love anything in the world or of the world. We need to be in the world not of the world. We are in the world to spread Jesus Christ and let His name be heard everywhere not to love what is of it. Some people blame God when they sin by saying like, ” God put that in the world and it made me sin,” but that is so not true. Every sin that we commit is 100% our fault, not God’s.

  20. christopher eriksen says:

27As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

It is so comforting to know that we once we are Christians, we can never be taken out of God’s hands. He keeps us and uses the Holy Spirit to continually grow us. But for sanctification to work, we also have to be willing to fight the sin in our lives and seek God instead. Let’s not love the world which is only temporary but rather love God with all our hearts and seek to know and live out the truth He has revealed to us through His Word.

  21. Jenaee (= says:

3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.

This is flat out, plain and clear of how we know if we and others are christians. We know what his commands are, so if we claim to be christians we should be doing them.

25And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.

This to me is just such an amazing promise……eternal life with my Lord and savior, it cant get any better!!

26I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.

God already could guarantee that we were going to be tempted to go away from him and sin, but that is why he gave us the Bible and the comands because if we follow them then we will not have a problem.

28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

I like this because it tells those that are second guessing there christianity then they need to go and figure that out ASAP because Jesus is coming soon and we need to be confident and ready for that day!!

  22. DVworkum says:

Verse 15 very good, super popular…anywho…Why love the world as Christians we have absolutly no reason to love the world, all that comes from in is sin and evil. If our goal is to worship God and follow his commandments we hate the world. I will admitt if you put it by itself, sin looks amazing, but if you compare it to the worship of the good and holy God it doesn’t even compare!

  23. Shane McCuistion from San Clemente says:

4The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Out of all the times that I have evangelized to people I would say a lot of people say they know the Lord. But most of the time they think they know HIm but they do not truly no Him because they do not obey His commands. After someone says they know the Lord, I ask them how to you get eternal life with the Lord. Every person I have talked says by doing good things. When you hear someone say that, then they do not have the truth in them. It’s not that you want to do bad things, but you want to obey the Lords commands!

  24. Brett says:

4.) The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

I absolutely love how plain and simple this verse is. Straight up, if we do not obey God’s commands, we do not love Him and He is not in us. Just like what Bobby talked about in the main service two weeks ago.

  25. vsunshine says:

28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

Pauls writes in many of his books about being unashamed of the gospel. It seems so crazy to think about why we wouldn’t be sharing it with everyone that we know because we want to share the great news and joy that we received from Jesus. I think that most christians want to share the gospel more and have more boldness and there is nothing wrong with sincerly wanting to obey Christ by sharing the great news of salvation, but the next and hardest step is to actually do it! I dont know how many times I have had an opportunity to share the gospel but didn’t take it because I did’t think it was the “right” time……every second of the day is the “right” time to tell others! I think that we tend to become afraid and fearful of the persons response, what we are going to say, and what the person is going to think about you after you have the conversation. Don’t think like that because IT DOES NOT MATTER! You are saving someones life and I regret the many friendships I had that I never once took the opportunity to talk to them about my Savior and what he has done for me! Believe me I am not saying I am just spreading the gospel to everyone because I am not but man once school starts I am going to be ready for some persecution because I want to be unashamed of the gospel and 100% confident in Christ so that everyone can know the saving grace of Christ! And I agree with you Jenae 100%, Christ is coming soon and we need to be ready for that day! MARANATHA!

  26. jeff Modugno says:

5But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
I like this verse because it shows us whoever obeys Gods word then Gods love shines through him.

  27. MJ says:

12I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

We cannot do any good deed that could make us pure as snow. Only Christ can do that. For it was by his death that we have been saved.

  28. 28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

I was really encouraged by this verse because we talked about this idea at the last Quiet Time 101. We were saying how easy it is to know about quiet times, understand why we need to do them and be into it for two days or maybe a week and then just not do it anymore. We act like we are excited to start something, but we aren’t excited to work at continuing to do it.

This verse is exhorting us to continue to follow the Lord so that we will be ready at His coming. A lot of times I hear people talk about a friend who is a new Christian but has already lost interest or enthusiasm for actually following the Lord, so much so it doesn’t even seem like they are a Christian. A real Christian continues following Christ to the end!

  29. Jessica Adams says:

5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
6 Whoever claims to live in him MUST walk as Jesus did

This chapter talks a lot about obeying God’s commands. If God is in us, we’ll obey Him because He commands us to, and we live to honor Him. If we’re claiming that we’re a Christian, we MUST walk as Jesus did (or at least strive to). It’s not optional, we can’t just pick and choose the things we want to do in Christ… We have to do it all! (And we should do it happily); Because that’s what we were made to do. I need to do EVERYTHING in God’s name and always be giving Him the glory… Not living for me or this world :)

  30. Austin Payne (sorry, I don't have a cool nickname) says:

12I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

MMMmmmm, a reminder why we serve Christ.

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

This verse rocks, it brings me back to not being a lukewarm. It reminds me that I need to be fully commited to Christ. “Sacrifice yourself for the mission or the mission for yourself.”

  31. Bre Moore says:

19They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

Here it is clearly stated that there is no such thing as a “falling away Christian” or “rededicating” your life to Christ. This is a very contraversal issue. I have talked to alot of Christians that say that it is fine to fall away for awhile and then come back, they said that this is completely normal. This would be a great verse to bring up in that kind of a situation, it clearly says that that they went out from us but they did not really belong to us. If we are truly Christians then we will remain with the Father.

  32. Brooke says:

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Oh, this verse definitely stood out to me! We as Christians should not set our minds on earthly and worldly desires! If we do love the world and what is in it, then we are not of Christ. Our main focuss should be God, and he should be our number one priority!
