Psalm 49

Psalm 49

Why Should I Fear in Times of Trouble?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.

49:1 Hear this, all peoples!
Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
both low and high,
rich and poor together!
My mouth shall speak wisdom;
the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.
I will incline my ear to a proverb;
I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.

Why should I fear in times of trouble,
when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,
those who trust in their wealth
and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Truly no man can ransom another,
or give to God the price of his life,
for the ransom of their life is costly
and can never suffice,
that he should live on forever
and never see the pit.

10 For he sees that even the wise die;
the fool and the stupid alike must perish
and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their graves are their homes forever,
their dwelling places to all generations,
though they called lands by their own names.
12 Man in his pomp will not remain;
he is like the beasts that perish.

13 This is the path of those who have foolish confidence;
yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah
14 Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
death shall be their shepherd,
and the upright shall rule over them in the morning.
Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell.
15 But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol,
for he will receive me. Selah

16 Be not afraid when a man becomes rich,
when the glory of his house increases.
17 For when he dies he will carry nothing away;
his glory will not go down after him.
18 For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed
—and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—
19 his soul will go to the generation of his fathers,
who will never again see light.
20 Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish. (ESV)

  1. Brooke Miller says:

    3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the utterance from my heart will give understanding.

    This verse stood out to me in this passage. When it comes to the mouth, it is a very powerful thing that can either destroy a person, or build them up! I know that I want the things that I say to be words of wisdom, and things that are encouraging and glorifying to the Lord! I want a complete obedient heart and lifestyle where I do and apply the things that God wants me to do!

  2. Dave Hosford, praying for Pastor Bobby's family rest on vacation says:

    Ps 49:15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself.

    This man knows it’s all about God: the wealth and position of this world soon fade away. No one can earn eternal life. Only God saves. And He does!

  3. Dan Lauder says:

    10 For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

    The stats are in, 100% of people die. As Pastor Bobby said in his sermon, we need to be prepared for our most important meeting ever, the day when we meet Jesus. It would be foolish to spend so much time preparing for meetings at school, work, with friends, etc, and not be prepared for the inevitable. Why spend so much time investing in worldly things when you can’t take them with you when you die? I’m going to live today in preparation for meeting Jesus!

    “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

  4. Beth Lauder says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    The psalmist is instructing on the futility of worldly wealth. While being rich may cause certain men to be esteemed and enjoy pleasurable lives on earth, worldly wealth does not help in securing eternal life. On the contrary, those who are rich often put their trust in their riches and let them be their god, thus preventing them from ever making God the true Lord of their lives. Jesus pointed out this truth in Matthew 19:23-24, “I tell you the truth. It is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” As 21st century, Orange County Christians we must take heed of this warning. We are rich. We have everything we need and most of the things we want. Psalm 49 correctly points out that devoting our lives to acquiring worldly wealth will end badly…we will be swallowed up by death and not get to take any of our riches with us. Let’s be devoted to do what Matthew 6:19-21 says and store up for ourselves eternal treasures. Repenting of our sins, placing our trust in Christ and living loies of sold-out obedience to His Word is the way to gain everything when we leave this life and head to heaven.

  5. Josh Larson says:

    But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. God is coming soon to take back his people. we need to be ready for his coming. i need to be thinking MARANATHA all the time and being ready for his comeing

  6. 15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    Like the psalmist this is my hope, that God will redeem my life through the work of Christ on the cross when I meet Him one day. I have been purchased and bought at a very costly price and with that comes assurance and confidence in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ! Oh for that day…MARANATHA!!!

  7. Mike says:

    20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

    Great comment Dan! We are al going to die one day, and nothing that we have with us here will be coming with us. If we are not spending our brief time here on earth preparing for our true life to come, then we are wasting our time. In Ecclesiastes 12:13, after everything has been declared meaningless, it is revealed that the only true meaning in life is to “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” I need to make sure that I am living my life in obedience to God out of a maranatha mindset, not getting caught up in things of this world but setting my heart and mind on things above! (Colossians 3:1-2)

  8. Ian H. says:

    10 “For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.”

    This verse sums up the overarching theme in this Psalm. Everyone is going to die, and thus it does not matter whether you were rich or poor in this life:

    16 “Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;
    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.”

    The Sons of Korah make it clear to us that those who trust in themselves/their riches are destined for the grave just like every single other person on the planet. This is a reminder to me that it’s totally possible that Jesus may not return until after I’m dead, and, as a matter of fact, I don’t know when I’ll die. For all I know, I could die today! Thus, I should be living each day like it was my last.
    But, as we read in verse 15, we who are God’s people–the righteous–have no reason to fear death, because we will not stay dead. We will go to be w/ Him! Praise the Lord!

  9. Ben Blakey says:

    The reality of death should change the way we think about this life.

    So should the reality of the resurrection.

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    This Psalmist was confident in life after death. I need to be, too. In fact, I should be so confident in the resurrection that I should be living a radical life. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:19, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.” I should be putting so much hope in the resurrection and living my life so radically for the kingdom that I should be the most pitied person on earth if it’s not true!

    Thank God it is true!
    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Nicholas Bonetto says:

    15 “But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himslef. Selah”

    Jesus defeated death by resurrecting from the grave, that means that if I repent of my sins and put my faith in Jesus, I can also defeat death. What an amazing promise, so many people don’t have this hope and are lost and scared. The resurrection should change the way I look at life, focusing on eternal things instead of focusing on this temporary life. While I was evangelizing last Saturday, I remember talking to this guy who thought he was a Christian and he said, “If you are a Christian and it did turn out to be false, we have nothing to loose.” That is completely wrong, if it turned out to be false (which it is absolutely not!) we are to be the most pitied people on earth.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  11. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like verse 7,”No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-”

    I like this verse because it shows how powerful we are… we aren’t in any way powerful we can’t save ourselves from HELL and we can’t earn HEAVEN we deserve to go to HELL and are destined for it unless we repent and have faith in GOD who is willing to save us and has graciously provided a way out for us.

  12. kelly causky says:

    i love this psalm!

    5 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me-
    6 those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?
    7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-
    8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough-
    9 that he should live on forever and not see decay.
    10 For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.
    11 Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.
    12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.
    13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Selah

    It clearly explains to us that even though “successful” and “prosperous” people in this world enjoy life now, they will never be able to have any more than their possessions. They will die and what they have will just be passed on to their posterity. But Christians know God. And we know that what we have in THIS life doesn’t matter. We live for the next life -the rewards that people who don’t know God do not even understand or cannot even fathom. Woo!

  13. Jenae Naeeee (= says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    In the world today, this is super easy to do!! I mean people all around us have mansions and like 8 cars and all the newest technology and sometimes its easy to get jealous!! But i shouldnt and i should be glad with what i have and know that i have God, and he will last forever unlike earthy posessions. (=

  14. Steffen Eriksen says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;

    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    Many people here on this earth seem to have it all. They think they are living the good life if they have a huge house, a nice car, a great job, lots of money, and so on. Yet if they don’t have salvation through Jesus Christ then they are just wasting away. The psalmist writes a warning to not be blown away when a man grows wealthy, for that man will not take his increasing wealth with him after he dies; it will not follow after him as he descends to hell to spend an eternity of suffering. This is preached so much, to store up treasures in heaven and not in this world for they will not last, yet so many people can’t pull their eyes of what is here right now. They are so focused on material things and can only consider the “good” they can get within this time here on earth. But how foolish and stupid they are! Material possessions will not last but instead they will fade away after this life is done. So I need to not be amazed or even jealous when someone else gets rich. I need to not desire after his wealth, but instead I need to think of the true good life that awaits me in heaven, and with this mindset of Kingdom Eyes live my life focused on the future. MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. ~ Ariana Mishreki ~ says:

    Goodmorning everybody . . .

    I read . . .

    Psalm 49 . . .

    I loved every single one of these verses. They were all talking about how rich people here on earth, increase in their value due to luxurious things. However, them compared to God and Heaven, are like a mear “beast who will perish in the end.” People here on earth who think they have it all, the nicest cars, coolest electronics, and elaborat homes, really have nothing. The reason this is, is because in the end, when the millionaire dies, he will carry nothing “home” with him. Everything that he once owned and adored will perish, and become appsolutely worthless. They are like “Sheep they are destined for the grave, and death will feed on them.”

    However what right do I have to call these people down. Yes, it is wrong of those people to idolize everything in their life, but who I am to judge that? I’m only a mear sinful human also. But the big difference between them and me, is that I have God living in my heart and have repented and put my faith in Him.

    The Populars. They seem to rule the school and look down on all underneath them which happens to be everyone but themselves. It is so easy to get caught up in that and strive to be like them. But that is just storing up worldly treasures and focusing on ourselves. That is wrong!! According to these two verses, those kind of people are on their way to hell. But those who store up their heavenly treasures, their glory will continue with them when they die. I want to be this kind of person, looking forward to persecution for Christ and His coming!!

    Also forgot to add in my post . . . why hold on to the luxurious things that the rich people have? They shouldn’t be spending their time in the now, and focusing on what they want or when they want it. Instead, they should be focusing on the future and ask themselves . . . what am I living for and what reward do I have to look forward to?

  18. Jackson Dahl says:

    Wow. This Psalm is seriously LegiT.

    8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough-

    This verse just really makes you realize how amazing God’s love for us is. NO PAYMENT- that means there is absolutely nothing I can do to make up for all I’ve done wrong- will allow me to save myself… Only God’s amazing love of sending Jesus to die and rise again will.. that’s true love.

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;
    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    This is so helpful to see.. even when I feel like other people are always better off and getting things better than me because they aren’t living for the Lord, I can know that their treasures they are storing up will be lost when they die.. but I am storing up treasures in heaven, that I will have for eternity.. I can know that living for God will end up SO much better than living for myself.

  19. jeff Modugno 2010 praying 4 Revival says:

    10 For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.
    This is a great verse. It shows me that that we are all going to die and we can’t take our toys,money, and worldly things. So I need to spend time on things above like reading the Bible and telling people the gospel…..

  20. it's Daniel Yo! says:

    10 For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

    It is too easy to forget why God has put us here on this earth. A lot of times, people (and me alike) will worry about the future and what we want to make of our life. But, the Bible says that God will take care of everything else and that we need to focus on spreading His word.

  21. Zach V says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;

    Sometimes I’m tempted to see those who are “great” on Earth better than others. Truth be told, they aren’t. Their riches last for a short time but mine and my fellow brothers in christ’s last forever. For example our campus lunches are of far more value than the Superbowl or other big events.

  22. billy morris says:

    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    This verse is great because it really puts things in their correct perspective. Honestly, everything that we have on this earth that we might consider putting as an idol before God, we need to realize that they will all vanish when we die. The only thing that will be important when we die is whether or not we are right with God.

  23. Matt Lawler says:

    12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.

    13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Selah

    Wealth is strictly a thing of the Earth meant to help us get by day to day, buy food, clothing etc. It should not be the idol of our lives, what really matters is how many we bring with us into eternity in heaven.

  24. Eric Walker says:

    5 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me-

    This is a very true and encouraging verse. Who shall we fear with the Lord behind us for comfort and strength. Just like Isaiah 41:10, who shall we fear with God on our side. We should not fear of what man thinks of us or can do to us, because in the end, the Lord’s opinion will be the only one that matters. All that man can do is kill us, so that we may be with our father sooner, but God can cast our souls into a lake of fire for all of eternity, isn’t that a lot more to fear than man? I pray that as a Christian, I will rep. Romans 1:16 and be unashamed to the gospel. I pray that I will no longer fear man but fear God and what he thinks.

  25. Michelle [slave for Christ] 2010 says:

    18 Though while he lived he counted himself blessed— and men praise you when you prosper-

    19 he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of life .

    It is so important to do a heart check when reading this passage. I need to make sure that my blessings that i count here are those that are from the Lord…not wordly desires! I need to make sure i am focusing on what is ahead, in my home with Christ in heaven!Marnatha!!

  26. Spencer Camp says:

    Psalm 49:5 “Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me-”

    The rich, according to this psalmist, those who”trust in their wealth”, die just as the wise do. Everyone knows that, but still they go on in their arrogance until one day quickly their mortality catches up with them, and the result—death. Well what’s the point?

    I believe this Psalm outlines the sorry truth of life for both the rich and the poor—it’s short. No one lives long…even if we strive for success and money, by the time we get it our tickers almost up. The point is that we must not store up riches on this earth, but store up treasures in heaven.

  27. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;
    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    This verse can be applied to many people out there today. So many people worry about earthly things and riches of this earth. This is sad because once they die the riches that they had on this earth will not go with them. What needs to be focused on is our riches in Heaven. I even catch myself worrying about treasures of this earth at times and it is something that I could work on.

  28. Christopher Eriksen says:

    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    Like Daniel said, it is really easy to forget why we are here. Especially last year I know that I spent a ton of time worrying about school grades and stuff like what’s going to happen in the future, when my grades and where I go to college is going to have no significance once I die. And similarly, all the time I invested in things like entertainment I also know won’t matter once I die but still I spend time pursuing it. God promises that if we seek Him first, He will take care of everything else as well, so I need to make sure that I am trusting Him in that way and preparing for His return which actually matters rather than wasting my time.

  29. kyle 2010, good morning says:

    7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-

    This is an awesome verse, especially for evangelism! “No man can redeem the life of another” makes me just think, of people maybe at our own church saying that I was born in a Christian home and thinking they’re saved because their parents were Christians. Our parents can’t justify for us to be saved, it all depends on our relationship with the Lord, not our parents.

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    This verse is amazing! The psalmist knows that He is going to live, although He dies! He knows that God will redeem his life from the grave! He knows God will not let him decay! He knows God is going to take him to himself. This psalmist has confidence, my life should be full of joy knowing that is going to happen to me, the overflow of my heart, what I say should be like that.

  30. P.J. says:

    “But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah”

    The Sons of Korah had such great confidence in life after death, in fact this whole Psalm told us of how worthless the things of the world are. The writer is telling us in verses 5-6 of how stupid it is to be fearful of those with increasing wealth, because no one alone can redeem themselves (v.7) at judgment, but rather only through the sacrificial blood of Christ. I need to be praying that I would be focusing on life after death, and not the things and stuff of this world. I want my life to reflect the same confidence that the Sons of Korah had in God and in his promises.

  31. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;
    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. 18 Though while he lived he counted himself blessed— and men praise you when you prosper-
    19 he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of life.
    20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

    Living in Orange County, there are many people who are rich, and have beautiful, large Houses. Sometimes, I am in awe of them, and wish that I had a house like theirs. But reading this Psalm really helped me because it doesn’t matter what things we have here, or how rich we are, it all matters on how spiritually rich we are, it doesn’t matter what things we have in this world, because this world will all be gone, and so will our lives on earth, so in the end, it really doesn’t matter how rich you are on earth, and that is what I’ll always remind myself of every time I want to have wealth.

  32. Elise says:

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;
    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    These verses really encouraged me today. I’ve been dealing with so many financial problems and today I had to face the ones I will have to deal with for the rest of the year. Meanwhile, I was listening to my fellow students complain that they were offered too much money for this semester. These verses reminded me that my focus should not be on money, because then money will become my god. I also need to stop feeling any jealousy towards those who are wealthy but do not have God. In the end, they will have nothing they received here on Earth. In the end, I will get to spend eternity with the perfect God of the universe and the last thing that will enter my mind is how much money I made while on Earth. I don’t want to waste any time worrying that could be spent worshipping God. I’m going to trust in God because He can do all things, and I am going to be praying Maranatha!

  33. Allie Moorefield(: says:

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah
    Nobody can redeem our lives except God. God will surely take us to Him. I CANNOT WAIT until the day i get to meet God.
    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.
    Rich men with their goods takes nothing with him when he dies. His splendor and wealth with not go with Him after death. He is left with nothing. The poor man with nothing, but a heart for the Lord will take everything with Him and be with the Lord! Even though the economy is horrible right now, we dont need to continuously think about it because all of our possessions will not go with us after death. Only our soul and heart! So i need to work to making a pure heart that is after the Lord!

  34. Murphy Danahy says:

    7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-
    8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough-
    9 that he should live on forever and not see decay.

    No man in David’s time could have redeemed themselves or each other. No man until Jesus. Jesus is the only one who could possibly have paid the ransom, he lived the perfect life. He redeemed himself, but died, so we could live.

  35. Rebekah Foreman says:

    20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish

    What is the point of being rich and not having God in your life. Some people believe riches is what makes your life complete and happy when nothing can compare to God. Nothing that is with us here is going to Heaven with us.

  36. PaYtOn fRoM nEbRaSkA :D says:

    1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world,

    Sometimes we have a tuff time listening(I know I do). So I have been practicing thinking before speaking and it really does work. God listens to His people, so we need to listen to HIM and obey HIM and all He commands us to do. GOD is GREAT and knows what I need to live according to His will. :]

    ***LIVE FOR CHIRST AND LISTEN!!!***

  37. Brennan says:

    2 both low and high, rich and poor alike:

    This is a great verse for it shows that we all are equal in God’s eyes, as it says rich and poor alike. Everything God’s word says is meant for all of us and should be treated as we need to do whatever it says with our best effort if we are rich or if we are poor. When we are in heaven it will not matter who was rich or poor on earth but who was rich or poor in their relationship with God.

  38. Bri B says:

    15 But God will redeem my life [f] from the grave;
    he will surely take me to himself.
    Selah

    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies,
    his splendor will not descend with him.

    That God has redeemed my life from the dead even though I die he took my spot on the cross so that I don’t have to. My body dies but my soul goes to The Creator.

    That when we did we won’t take anything we own with us, instead that it will stay on the earth decaying and wearing away.

  39. Dominic S says:

    Wow! I love this whole chapter! The first 12 verses talk about men that have earthly desires and riches and put their faith in the world and themselves.

    10 For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

    I love how this verse emphasizes that wisemen and foolish men can both perish if they put their faith in the world. This is a major misunderstanding with many people who believe that you can get into heaven if you’re a “good person,” when in fact only trusting in God can get someone saved.

  40. Mark 2011 says:

    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him

    We should not become ruled by our world possesions!!! I need to be focusing on ways to store up treasures in heaven rather than here on earth, for great is the reward in heaven!!!!

  41. Pastor Bobby Blakey says:

    7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-

    Praise God that Jesus gave his life as a ransom for us – Matthew 20:28

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    I am very much looking forward to this: whether I die or get raptures…I cannot wait for Christ to take me home where I will be with him forever…

    Wait for it…

    MARANATHA!!!!

  42. Fëanor says:

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    This verse makes me think about the cross. What God has saved me from is infinitely worse than what God’s saving grace gives me. I’m so excited to be spiritually alive. Maranatha!

  43. Alison says:

    7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-
    8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough-
    9 that he should live on forever and not see decay.

    This the price that Christ paid, the price that it is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone else to pay. He redeemed the lives of every single Christian, not just one life. He paid the ransom, and if the Bible says the ransom for ONE life is costly, that no payment is ever enough, imagine the ransom for ALL of us. Wow, its incredible. I’m so thankful to Jesus for paying MY ransom!!

  44. Jasmine Douglas says:

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    What a great thing to be confident of. That we will spend eternity in heaven, with God! Soon and very soon, we are going to see the King, Hallelujah!!

    Isaiah 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says—
    he who created you, O Jacob,
    he who formed you, O Israel:
    “Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

  45. Karsten Klein says:

    12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.

    13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Selah

    No matter how rich or powerful you are in your life you will die. If you only trust in your money and yourself then you will never see eternal life. You have to trust god to help you with your problems.

  46. hunter 2010 says:

    Good point Pastor Bobby!

    16 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases;

    This verse totaly happened at my work today. There was a bougatti veyron (very nice car) parked in the parking lot near my work and one of my coworkers freaked out and ran out of the store to look at it. Truth be told that car is just going to burn when God destroys the world, it has no eternal/spiritual value and is really a waste of money (think of all the poor people you could feed with that money…). It is nothing to get truely joyfull or excited about. God’s Truth though is something to get excited about! The Gospel alone has the power to really change lives and save us from Hell, a bougatti can’t!

  47. Evan McKee says:

    17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him.

    It’s strange how much people, even christians, are focused on the pleasures of this world instead of the next. This verse reminds me of how important it is to live my life for christ.

  48. Snowmann 2010 says:

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

    Hallelujah!!! Praise to God that He did in my Life! Maranatha! Lord, I pray you come quickly and judge this world! I pray the Lord will separate light from day and make himself evident to the world, so all might be saved.

  49. Adam Duarte [2010] says:

    20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

    So true. A verse to keep in mind when considering the works that are done in this world – what is it all good for, if Christ is not there? Success in the world today is usually measured by how much you own. How many cars you have, how big your house is, how many children you have. All of your possessions – we are growing up in a very materialistic society. But no one can take their wealth with them. As Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 1:14, “I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.”

    What is it all good for without Christ? A great verse I ought to keep in mind when I start measuring myself against others based on worldly things.

  50. Mady says:

    Psalm 49:13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. Selah

    This verse is really intense.. People who trust in themselves are not going to have it very good. I need to always keep my hope and trust in God, no matter what the situation is! I can get distracted really easily with the worries of this world, or other stupid things. Without keeping my trust in God, things always seem to get worse. But when I remember that God has a plan for my life and it is all in his hands, things get easier. I NEED to trust Him!!!

  51. Sara L. says:

    12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.

    I think young people then to feel invincible at times. That was kind of off topic….but I am so thankful that I have hope in the Lord for eternal life. When this psalm was written….Jesus had not died for us yet…..he had not risen. Yet now, because of Him I have SALVATION. I’m not getting what I deserve…..I will praise Him for eternity!

    15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah

  52. Riley Hancock says:

    1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world,

    2 both low and high, rich and poor alike:

    3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the utterance from my heart will give understanding.

    People should listen to what we have to say because we might save them from there minds to understand what and who God is.

  53. Chelseaaaaa says:

    1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world,

    2 both low and high, rich and poor alike:

    God doesn’t discriminate anyone, no matter their standing in society or the physical meaningless things that seem to matter to those who live in and of this world.
