John 19

Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

“They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things, 25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

The Death of Jesus

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. 1. 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above…

This totally reminded me of Romans 13 where it says…
“for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God”

Its cool to think that the authorities on our lives are totally place there by God and with only his will. Even with the upcoming election which some people are totally freaking out about, we can be at peace because we know that God will place the right person who He wants to govern the usa. No matter who gets elected, God is ultimately in control and whoever it is, he will be the right president that we need. :)

  2. Curtis says:

the part i always like about the crucifixion story is all the prophesy that was fulfilled as mentioned about in the chapter… its awesome reading passages like isaiah 53 and psalm 22 and connecting it with this event that happens hundreds of years later…

  3. Mike says:

I agree with you Curtis … and the thing thats really sad about it is that for all of their knowledge of the Scriptures, the Pharisees and teachers of the law could not see how Jesus was fulfilling those prophesies.

8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,

Pilate was not a follower of Jesus, but he knew in his heart that Jesus was not guilty of anything. Yet because he wanted to keep his job and his favor with the people, he gave in to their requests and handed Jesus over to them. He was not willing to sacrifice anything to do what he knew was right, so he took the easy way out. I thought the short conversation Pilate had with Jesus in verses 10-11 was really interesting, and I agree with what Jacob said about it.

  4. Beth Lauder says:

38Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39He was accompanied by Nicodemus

I was struck by the fact that it was Joseph and Nicodemus, and not Jesus’ closest disciples who claimed Jesus’ body and prepared Him for burial. It is clear from Mark 14:50 that all of the disciples, minus John, ran away when Jesus was crucified. This is so sad to me! The men who had known Jesus best, the ones who Jesus had walked with for years and discipled, they were the ones who abandoned Him in His greatest hour of need. Jesus’ very disciples were struggling with the fear of men over the fear of God. One of the greatest pieces of evidence for Jesus’ resurrection was the complete turn around in the behavior of the disciples. These men went form cowering in fear and running away from the authoiries to be willing to die the most gruesome of deaths. They would not have done that if they had stolen Jesus’ body and faked His resurrection. No, the only reason that the disciples regained their fervor for the Lord is that they saw Jesus after He was resurrected and knew He could only do that if He was God.

  5. Kyle Johnson says:

15But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?”

After all that the Lord has done for them, all the miracles of healing the people, and after everyone was praising Him at the Feast, and all the sudden they reject Him, prophesy has to be fullfilled, but that was horrible, they are rejecting God like that.

  6. Ashlyn:] says:

The whole story of Jesus’ death is so sad yet it gives me peace and joy. That day scripture was fufilled and all of us sinners were now able to be saved. Jesus went through so much pain for you and me, there are no words to express my gratitude!!!

Like Jacob this verse stood out to me also…
11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above…

How true is this verse, God knew all of this was going to happen,He let it happen. It was all part of His perfect plan. The power all of us have on earth is given from God. Knowing that God controls everything gives me peace, because i know whatever happens in my life is all for the best and part of a plan.

  7. Jenaee (= says:

Totally agreeing with Jacob and Ashlyn….

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above…

This is soooo true, God already had a plan for Jesus and he has plans for us and nobody can try to mess that up becuase they dont have the kind of power God does. God is all powerfull and controls everything on this earth.

  8. Max says:

30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

This is a very scary moment. While Jesus is on the cross there were earthquakes, and smoke filled the air and it was dark. But as Jesus breathes His last, He says “It is finished.” He finished His job. And then the curtain separating the Holy of Holies is torn from the top down. Whoa. If I were a soldier there that would freak me out sooo much. Pilate wrote “King of the Jews” on His cross, and if the events happening now weren’t proof enough, we know He rises again. But what Christ did here was rip the curtain. That is important because He made access to God not JUST for the high priests, but for everyone. All we have to do is believe in our hearts that Christ is Lord, and turn and repent. It’s that simple. To non-Christians, It may not seem worth it, but we have to convince them otherwise. Like we talked about at the beach on Wednesday, we should be stepping up our evangelism. Christ gave His own life for us. If that isn’t a good enough reason to evangelize and tell others what He did for them, I don’t know what is. It’s heartbreaking to see people turn down Christ, even when He endured so much suffering for us. We have to keep persisting with our friends and family that aren’t Christians, because we definetely don’t want to see them go to hell.

  9. Jessica Adams says:

I know everyone’s using this verse, but it’s a really good one, so:

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above”…

This verse lets us know that all power and authority comes from God, and nobody else. He is in control of everything at all times. Because we know that our power or authority comes from God, we need to be using it to glorify Him. I need to remember that God is the most powerful and He’s is all that matters!!

  10. Hunter says:

Curtis, I always like reading the prophesies too, they are so God glorifying!

17Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).

The same way Jesus carried his own cross we need to carry our own too. Not a literal cross, but a figurative one in the form of a self-denying faith. How devoted are we to Christ? Are we willing to pay the ultimate price for Him? Jesus demands our full lives and commitment to Him, obeying His commands and being fully devoted ot Him is the only way to live if we call ourselves Christians. So in light of Jesus’ example here in verse 17 and becasue of His command in Luke 9:23; we need to pick up our cross today (if you haven’t yet) and be willing to follow him to the point of death, if we believe and do this then Jesus says we will recieve eternal life Luke 9:24; that is the coolest reward ever!

  11. jeff Modugno says:

11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

This verse just reminds us that God is all powerful. He gives us power. So with school starting lets go tell others about what Christ did for us. God will give us help.

  12. Bethany Gonzales says:

wow great comments everyone! I want to follow up on Beth. The two disciples, who weren’t even as close to Jesus as Peter and the others, claimed His body and buried Him! You would think that the closer ones would claim it and mourn for Him. These disciples still loved Jesus throughout the entire trial and I see that as staying strong! They still had that connection with Him that no one else had. And yet they abandoned Jesus in that time when He needed support! We need to be His faithful followers and stand up for Him in every situation, even if it means death! Whenever I read the about the crucification, I always have tears in my eyes. It brings so much pain and to hold all the sin of the world is incredible! But when I think of the result, it always brings me joy that is neverending! He’ll never leave us, even in the hardest times, AND we get a relationship with the God that created us! What a blessing! :D

  13. Shane McCuistion from San Clemente says:

10″Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

Here in this verse, Pilate thinks that since Jesus is in too much pain, that he has more power over Jesus. That is not true, because Jesus still has all His power left in Him and he can free Himself whenever he wanted to, but he’s not going to because he wants to die for everyone and for their sins and that’s what His Father sent Him down to do. But then Jesus replied with this verse.

11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

So Pilate would have no power if it weren’t for the Father. So whoever turned Jesus in is guilty of a who lot of a greater sin. Which is Judas by the way. Once Judas realized what he had done, he hung himself and died and he is in Hell today.

  14. Sarah G.! says:

15But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

It still amazes me that the the priests still do not mention any type of relationship with the God they claim to know and how, in this verse, it is all about Caesar!! The priests are the people who really knew all about the scripture/torah, yet they still are blinded by their selfish motives! We need to examine ourselves and check our motives everyday to make sure we aren’t following the priests, pharisees, and saducees!

  15. John K says:

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Although it is tragic to think that the Jews crucified their Lord and Savior. It is amazing to me how in control of the situation God was during all of this. Even at the end hanging on the cross, Jesus gave up his spirit willingly for us. God is Sovereign and has His hands in the details of all of our lives. So take courage and realize that God already knows what is going to happen to you today. Good or bad.

  16. 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above…

Jesus had the right response. He knew that this was all part of the Father’s plan and that NOTHING was happening that was not sovereignly under control. His explanation of this to Pilate must have caught Pilate off guard. I can only imagine. Jesus willingly submitted himself to this death for the sin…what a love, what a Savior!

NEW BLOG ON TY AND BOBBY’S NEW SONG :)

  17. it's Daniel Yo! (from England) says:

15But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

Wow. It’s really kinda sad actually that they knew so much about the Bible but they wouldn’t accept Jesus. And even right here they are saying that they have NO OTHER king besides Cesear!

  18. emily!! says:

10″Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.

i know everyone has used this!! haha, but i love how it shows the sovereinty of God and how all powerful he is. And, it’s cool because Pilate is kinda talking down to Jesus asking Him if He realizes the power he’s got over Him…and Jesus comes back saying that His father is giving Pilate the power to kill His son!!

  19. DVworkum says:

This chapter is very exiting because of how much it mentions the fulfilling of scripture. It is amazing to think about how many things that Jesus fulfilled…even more proof that he is God!

  20. Haley Litz says:

10″Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

Jesus knew that God had ultimate authority and sovereignty in the situation. He knew what the Father’s will was and knew that no one could change what would happen. Jesus knew that He was to die and didn’t try to defend Himself from death. Wow what an example to us of submitting to the will of our Father and knowing His power.

  21. Matthew Richards (from Cleveland) says:

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

This may seem at first like a simple statement by Pilate, but I was just struck by what a deeper meaning it has that Pilate never realized. Not only could “what i have DONE, i have DONE” in killing Christ, but he has also completely written history in an unbelievable way. His choice to kill Christ ultimately wrote the death and resurrection of Christ. While not right, I can’t help but praise Christ for willing taking himself to the cross by following Pilate’s orders.

35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.

I love this verse!!! I always tell people that when I preach Christ, I am telling them the truth in order that they may also believe in Christ. How fitting that John recognized the same thing and pointed it out!!! John is making sure that everyone knows he’s not lying but that he in fact was witness and is telling this for the hopeful redemption of others. Let’s remember that we tell others the good news for THEIR sake to see them turn to Christ!

  22. Michelle:) says:

hey, before i comment on this chapter, can i ask for prayer
i am going through some intense spiritual battles right now, and i ask that when you pray, you will pray that through them, my faith will grow intensly and that i will just turn to God for everything praise Him through these tough times. thanks:)
    ANYWAYS:

This chapter just makes me realize the pain and suffering Jesus went through for our sake.it convicts me and really makes me realize that i take how good God is for granted.i mean, we continuously hear that jesus christ died on a cross for our sins and all we think about is “blah blah blah, ive heard this a million times”
that is taking the love of christ for granted.i love reading this chapter because it reminds me that we have such a soverign and good lord who is willing to send his ONE AND ONLY son down here on a sinful earth, to die for our sinds.and its sad that only so many of us realize this.He did this, knowing that sooo many people would reject it.jesus would still die on a cross if it would have only been for one person.NOW THAT IS TRUE LOVE.i am looking forward to being in heaven with him, praising Him and lifting up His holy name
    MARANATHA:)

  23. vsunshine says:

Definetly Michelle! A verse that helped me was James 1:2-6…..so that you can perservere and be made complete through whatever trial you are going through right now!

This whole chapter really saddened me to think about how much pain and suffering Christ went through for my sins. He was humiliated, beaten, and killed for me but i also have great joy in the fact that now i am not a slave to sin but a slave for Christ and all my sins are forgiven! How wonderful and gracious our heavenly father is! MARANATHA!

  24. Julien Griffe says:

10″Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.

Pilate taugh that he had the power to free Jesus, but this power was given from God.
I love how Jesus responded to Pilate. Jesus always have great response. No one has the power over God, the power that people can have is given from the all powerfull God.

  25. MJ says:

11Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

This verse is confirming the fact that Jesus must die. The fact that Pilate would not be able to save him even if he wanted to. It was what had to happen so that we may be saved.

  26. christopher eriksen says:

Like Curtis said, it’s really amazing how many prophesies Jesus fulfilled. God is so much greater than we can understand, and its amazing how much He perfectly planned so that we would know that Christ is God and repent. It’s cool even when we stop and see how we is working around us in everyday things and know that He has everything under control and has a perfect plan for all of it.

  27. Pastor Bobby Blakey says:

1 John 4:10 – This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and send his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Even though it doesn’t mention it specifically in this chapter, what we really see here is love. Jesus shows us what loves is by dying for our sins on the cross. He gives his life for us. Now may we do the same for him and for others.

God Calls It Love #1 tomorrow night!
