Psalm 46

God Is Our Fortress

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song.

46:1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah (ESV)

Sorry that this is up a little late!

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

I love the picture this verse creates. Although we can think of the world as big and scary, all God has to do is lift his voice and it melts!

If this God is my refuge, how foolish is it when I worry or am afraid?

I’m stoked to see you guys at True North tonight! We’re talking about how to share the gospel at school as we kick off our Back to School with the Bible Series!

Let’s pray for Maranatha and Revival today!

  2. Mike says:

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

It is one thing to pray Maranatha and eagerly await the day that the Lord will be glorified by all people, both His children and those who have rejected Him. But if we keep this joy to ourselves, we are being disobedient and selfish. We should see every unsaved person around us as a lost soul who is headed to hell unless God does a work in their hearts – and he will not, unless we are bold enough to tell them the gospel. Pastor Bobby reminded me of this one night while we were out evangelizing, and I have found that this mindset is necessary in order to be a useful servant of the Lord. I need to make sure I have that sense of urgency wherever I am, looking for opportunities to talk to people – people who might never get another change to hear the message of Christ’s death for their sins and resurrection from the grave. If I truly have a maranatha mindset and truly want the Lord to return, then I will do everything possible to speed His coming by being obedient to make disciples.

  3. Riley Hancock says:

Verse one is talking about that God gives us streght even if we are having troble with what ever it is. God bless us all.

  4. Chelseaaaa says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

This verse paints a beautiful picture of three of the many traits of God. We can rest in the knowing that God is protecting us, even in our hardest times.

  5. j. watkins says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah

It’s saying that no matter what happens, we’ve got god on our side.
    No need to fear.

    luv it. B- )

  6. Brooke Miller says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

This verse definitely stood out to me because usually when I am going through a trial, I rely on myself, and don’t trust in the Lord as much as I should! This verse is so encouraging knowing that God is always with me, and that he is my strength and refuge! I just need to know that the Lord works everything out for the good of those who love him, and that everything he does, there is a purpose and reason for it! From reading this, I am going to stop taking matters into my own hands whenever I am going through a tough time, and instead rely and trust in the Lord 100% with EVERYTHING.

  7. it's Daniel Yo! says:

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

In the NASV it it translated as: “cease striving”…basically, what this verse means, is that who shouldn’t worry about persuing our own goals. Or we shouldn’t worry about preventing bad things from happening to us. God is in control and whatever He wills/has planned will be done.

  8. Kyle J wit da bigg game says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

As we face hard times and troubles I need to trust in God. I’m going through some tough times this last month and I need to trust in the Lord more. I need to pray more and ask God for help in whatever mess I am in. Why should I trust God? well this verse tells us that God is always present to help us in our trouble and that God is our safe place, our refuge and God is also our stregth.

  9. Elise says:

11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

I think this verse sums up everything this encouraging Psalm is trying to say- That the creator of the universe who is all powerful is in control of everything he created, and we should therefore not be worrying about anything! Its such a simple concept- the creator of the universe is fully capable of controlling it. Though it is simple, it is for some reason so difficult to fully trust in! I know that when I’m worried about something, I know that I should trust in God but I for some reason hesitate to pour out my soul! Psalm 42:5 says “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God…”! I need to be commanding my soul to trust in God whenever I am tempted to worry, because He is always with me and is my fortress!

  10. Billy Morris says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

This verse really brings out some great points to think about. All the time, I find myself in trouble. Maybe not actual trouble, but a situation I would not want to be in. A great thing to do in a time like this is to trust in God to be our strength and our refuge. Also, I need to realize he will always be there to help me in my time of trouble. He really is a great God.

  11. Ian H. says:

1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,”

7 “The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

This Psalm is pretty much summed up in verse 7. The Sons of Korah clearly had great confidence in the power and love of God. They trusted that He would be with them always, despite what crazy and terrible things might be happening. They knew that God would take care of them in times of trouble, regardless of how bad it seemed. And thus, they weren’t going to be afraid.
I know that I cannot really say the same as them. In the few times of trouble I come across, I don’t usually go straight to God. Trusting completly, having total confidence in Him is something I need to be doing 24/7. Lord, please help me to have complete confidence in you ALL the time.

  12. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 11 ,”The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah”

I like this verse because it talks about GOD being our fortress. GOD is the LORD and the only real GOD if you don’t have a stronghold in the real GOD then you have no stronghold whatsoever and you have no protection from the DEVIL. If you aren’t 100% with GOD then you are against HIM and have no fortress to go to for protection.

  13. Eric Walker says:

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.

How awesome will it be the day we get to see the holy place where the Most High dwells! I’m sooo excited!!! The day that I get to meet with Jesus and talk with him face to face will for sure be the best day of my life. I can’t wait to fall face down before God and have to look away from him because he is so holy. I pray that God would give us all the Maranatha Mindset and that we are constantly awaiting his return. MARANATHA!!!

  14. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

This is such a comforting verse. It is so great that God will be there to help me when I am in trouble. I have learned that I need to be praising God in the good days and the bad days because He is there for me all the time.

  15. Jasmine Wonton :) says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble

I absolutely love this verse! One of my favorites. I have it written and posted in my room. It’s so encouraging and uplifiting to me. The funny thing is that I read it one time and I thought it was a nice verse absentmindledy highlighted it. Then one day when I was really having a hard time, I flipped to a random page in my Bible and this verse stuck out. I really really needed it at that time. It definately reminds me that no matter how many times people fail/disappoint me that God is always there for me and I can trust Him with His perfect will and not mine. I can turn to Him for strength and guidance and help and He’s always there for me during my troubled and good times. Like Ben said I don’t need to worry or panic over little things because I have God.

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Sometimes I’m so busy with everything and I need to remind myself that I need to take time and just be still and just worship and praise the Lord and His presence. Just sitting and standing in awe of creation is amazing and then I wonder why I’ve been trading it for wordly things and missing out on it.

  16. Nachooooooooooo says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

These verses are so comforting to me because whatever I am going through, I know that God is with me, He is my strength, and He will always be there to run to. Praise God!

  17. Nicholas Bonetto says:

Psalms 46:6 “Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.”

This gives an amazing picture. Everything is going crazy and the world is melting because of God. God is truly amazing, just by His presence we fall to our knees and tremble. His voice can melt the earth, imagine what His hands can do!!! I need to put God in such a high view, He is perfect and all-powerful!

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  18. kelly causky says:

7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

There were these four men in the military speaking at this one church this weekend. They were talking about the Middle East and Israel and the wars that are going on down there. One man was a former terrorist and got saved when he saw and learned about all the history in Israel and what Jesus did there. These speakers really reminded me that God is always in control. Even when things seem irreparable and terrifying, we do not ever have anything to fear because God is with us and he will soon be “exalted among the nations” and “in the earth.” God is coming soon!

  19. hunter 2010 says:

    So true Ben!

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Like Ben, this realy puts all my “problems” into perspective. The things I worry and get nervous about are so small compared to my God! This encourages me to stop worrying about my problems and instead put all trust in God and His faithfulness everyday. Worrying is foolish (Mt.6:27)!

  20. Derek Brower 2010 says:

Mmm I loved how this chapter talks about things like the earth melting and going away, mountains falling to the sea, etc.. Then shows the Lord and how He is our fortress and shield, but also as thrOne who causes everything to happen according to His will!!

  21. Sarah G., Eliz, and Bethany Leigh says:

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah

Elizabeth and Bethany are reminded of Moses and the parting of the Red Sea and how God is always on the righteous man’s side! It also reminded us to never worry because God is in control of the whole universe! This verse reminded me personally not to worry about my homework not getting finished on time. God is in control and i just need to get more work done!! Bethany can know that God will protect our father while he is going to Camp Roberts. Elizabeth will not panic or get stressed during registration next week!! ;D

  22. austin Wilemon says:

Hey sorry guys , long time no see

This passage along with last wednesday sermon was just great for me. As this passage talks about putting your strength in God, is great for me because I am in the middle of hell weeks for football. And as I get tired and as I am just thinking I should just quit, that is when I put my strength in God and do not pay any attention to what the earth is trying to bring me down with.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.

  23. Jasmine Douglas says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

What a beautiful promise. God is always with us and we can rely on him for everything and anything. That’s the God that we serve! Like Brooke said, He is always with us and we just need to trust that he’s in total control of every part of our lives. We can’t do things on our own and every time we try, we’ll fail. We need to lift up all of our problems to him and he’ll take care of us.

  24. Ashlyn--:) says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

What i got from this is…EVER- PRESENT, today tomorrow, at 3;00 am, next year, ect! God will always be there, our fortress in times of need. Yesterday i was talking to a friend who has been and is going through a lot of trouble…she is having a hard time but i kept telling her to rely on Christ’s strentgh, she can get through it with him :) He is ever faithfull!

  25. ♫ І€ƒƒ€ñ ♫ back from vacation says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

It is always nice when someone going through tough times has loyal friends there to encourage and comfort him. Yet as those loyal friends are still but human, they will sometimes fail in their loyalty. Yet this verse tells us that the LORD is an ever-present help in trouble. This is even more encouraging, for God is always there for His people and there is absolutely nothing that can happen to them that He doesn’t allow. He is a refuge and strength that never fails. I can strive to be faithful and loyal to my friends and to my God, yet I will still mess up. Yet I can have confidence that my God will always be there for me to find refuge in and when I am weak I can find strength in Him. And seeing this I need to strive to be a faithful and loyal friend and slave. A loyal friend who stands by his friends and comforts them in tough times, and a faithful slave, for God is my only Master and I need to be solely living for Him at all times.

  26. P.J. says:

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

I love reading over and over the reassuring promises that God is going to one day be exalted above all the nations! I want to be praying each day that I would have a maranatha mindset and that my King would find me doing his will.

  27. Callie says:

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

This verse reminds me that in our lives, most of the time everything is just go go go and we never pause to think about God. I need to take the time to do that, since it is a lot more important than everything else I am doing.

  28. Aubree Calderwood says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah

The Earth giving away and the mountains falling into the sea seems like it would be pretty scary! It is amazing that even in the most dangerous and terrible of times God is with us. His power can protect us from any danger. I need to remember when im feeling in trouble, my first step should always be to go to God! Though God is not tangibal or physically present in my life, he is the most powerful, awesome, and important thing in my life, so he should be the first I go to in times of need. :)

  29. Dominic S says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

I love these verses because David is saying that God will always be there for us when we are in need and he will be our refuge. We shouldn’t even be afraid when the earth is destroyed because we have God tp protect those who put their trust in Him. I think this point is most important because many people put their trust in worldly things (money, property) and not God, and the Bible says that those will all die away and be destroyed, but if we put our trust in God, then He will deliver us from evil.

  30. Rebekah Foreman says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

God is amazing the picture that I imagined when I thought of this. WOW!!! God is our strength and is there for us in trouble. When we fall He picks us back up.

  31. Jackson Dahl says:

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

WOW. God is so awesome! It’s verses like this that make me realize I can’t even imagine how incredible and powerful God is.. When I see him I know that I will tremble in fear.. which is exactly what I should do. The Lord is so mighty and perfect that he will make all of us seem like dirt. Which is true, because I am dirt compared to God.. But his love his so great that he doesn’t care how unworthy we are, and that is the most awesome thing about him!

  32. Praying for Pastor Ben and all of you at True North this weekend while I am on vacation…

I am praying that we will get ready to bring the gospel back to school and represent Christ on campus!

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah

The MacArthur Study Bible says that these two verses are referring to earthquakes. And I can definitely see that at the end of the verse three…ever been in a parking garage and thrown up a quick prayer? It is encouraging me to know that I can trust in God even in a physical calamity.

  33. Karsten Klein says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea

I think this verse says that no matter what trouble you’re in, you can always rely on god to protect you. although crazy things might happen we will never have to fear anything when you rely on god.

  34. brad says:

    “we will not fear”

It can sometimes be hard to hope in God’s promises when the future can seem to uncertain, but God is always faithful so there’s no reason to fear. We should live courageous Christian lives!

  35. Evan McKee says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

It is so great that we have someone to go to no matter where we are or who is with us. I’m so glad that whenever something is wrong, I will always be able to turn to him for help, and he will always answer.

  36. Mady says:

Psalm 46:2 “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,”

This verse really stood out to me, because I can have a problem with “fear” or “worrying”. I need to know that God is always there, and because he is my King, I dont need to fear man, or what this earth can do. I should fear God!!

  37. Sara L. says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Sometimes when I’m having a difficult time I tend to worry a lot. I may begin to feel alone as well. Whenever I start to feel like that I should remember this verse because it reminds me God is always there for me. I should always say no to worry and turn to God instead.

  38. josh senger says:

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

when i think about the things that we may fear here on earth it is nothing compared to if the mountains fell into the sea. the things that i may fear is nothing compared to that and i want to use this verse to remind myslef that God is always with me and to spure me on in times of trouble

  39. Fëanor says:

9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire.

As Pastor Bobby so aptly put it, God is in the business of taking people down. A healthy fear of the Lord can help me withstand temptation. On judgement day, I’m glad I’ll have Jesus’ blood to cover my sin.

  40. Katie Slusher says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Wow, what a simple truth that we often take for granted! Our God is an EVER-PRESENT help in trouble, meaning that He is ALWAYS there. He is always with us and will never be out of reach. Like many of you have already pointed out, if God is my ever-present help, I do not need to worry about the little (or big) things in life. I need to stop worrying and start thinking rightly about God; remembering He is my refuge and strength!

  41. Natalie cannavo says:

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

This really shows how God’s power is much bigger and stronger than tat of the world. When everything is in chaos and the kingdoms of the world are falling to ruins, still He will be in control! He is bigger! Thats really a good thought! God is ALWAYS bigger! He is ALWAYS in control! Our world is in His hands!

7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Since this is repeated in verse 11 also, obviously it has great meaning! The Sons of Korah must have felt comforted by this. When I read it I feel like the LORD, who is exceedingly strong in every aspect and situation, is there with me and is protecting me.

  42. Spencer Camp says:

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

I remember Pastor Mike’s sermon a little more then a month ago when he was talking about not being shaken by the talk of the world blowing up or the economy going down because it is just like this verse. Even if the San Andreas fault collapses, and California is sent back to the stone age, we will not fear because our citizenship is not on this earth but in Heaven, in the New Jerusalem. We trust that God is our refuge and will provide for our needs always. Not only on this earth but for eternity.

  43. Laura Johnson says:

    I love this psalm!!!!
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

I like in this verse how it says, “an ever-present help in trouble” because God is already dwelling in our hearts strengthening, guiding and changing us. One day we will see Him face to face but He is with us by the Holy Spirit while where here on earth.

  44. Jenae Naeeee (= says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

THis verese is seriously so comforting and such a great promise. I really like the word ever-present!! God will always be with us no matter what!

  45. Adam Duarte [2010] says:

Wow, such imagery in this psalm!

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

This verse definitely jumped out at me. I’ve been going through a lot of trials lately, both of faith and of character, and it’s so encouraging to know that always God is my refuge and strength! Though it can get tiring, I know that I can always depend on the Lord. Maranatha!

  46. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 46

How encouraging is it to know that our God is a fortress to those who put their trust in Him. He is our source of strength and courage which guides us through all our troubles. Our lord is sovereign over all creation and every nation. What an awesome God we serve!

Psalm 59:16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

  47. cristina brower says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

this is probably one of the most comforting verses i have read in a while! i cant even explain the feeling when i read it. its so awesome to know that God is always here and that He will never ever leave us, and that whenever we need help, He is always there to help us. GOD IS GOOD.

    MARANATHA!!!

  48. Haley Litz says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

What an awesome and encouraging verse!!! I like how the verse says “an ever-present help in trouble”. God is there for me in trials and temptations. This reminds me of 1 Cor. 10:13. God will not let me be tempted beyond what I can bear and provides a way out. That is so encouraging and convicting to know there always is a way out! God is all-powerful and I can find refuge in Him. Although people, like friends and family, may not always be there for me in hard times, it is good to know that God is and I can trust in Him fully.

  49. Christopher Eriksen says:

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

I like how this verse starts off with be still, because I know for me its easy for my mind to flare up and worry about all sorts of things. I need to be calm and confident in the LORD, because He is all-powerful and promises to take care of us according to His good purpose. I like how Bobby once said to me that worrying is a lack of faith – either I am not trusting God’s power to be sufficient or I am not trusting that He will use it to take care of me. Either way, that’s horrible and insulting of me to think that way of a God who is so utterly powerful and so perfectly good. I need to make sure that I am trusting God and be at peace and joy in every situation, because He promises to work for the good of those who love Him and He definitely has the power and means to do so.

  50. Snowmann 2010 says:

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

I pray God comes swiftly and MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. Michelle [slave for Christ] 2010 says:

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

When i read this verse i think to myself, “Why in the world, michelle, do you try to take things into your own hands?!??!?!”
God is always there, and i need to think about that and meditate on that and actually apply it more to my life. When i talk to non-christians they usually say, “Where was God when this happened in my life?!”
God is always there. It is us who have to call on the Lord and trust that He will help us, even if it doesnt go as we planned. We need to trust in Gods will for us!

    Maranatha!!!
